Poplife announces 10 Year Anniversary Event 6/6/09

MIAMI’S INDIE CULTURE STAPLE LIVES ON AFTER TEN SPIRITED AND FRUITFUL YEARS

POPLIFE Celebrates a Decade of Indie Music and Nightlife

On Saturday, June 6, POPLIFE will commemorate 10 years of showcasing indie music and providing a compelling, alternative cultural hub for nightlife revelers. The 10-year anniversary celebration will feature a live performance by Atlanta indie rockers Snowden, along with very special surprise guests yet to be announced, DJ sets by Aramis, Induce and Mike Deuce, lots of giveaways (music, T-shirts, etc), and the unveiling of a new logo, all at White Room, 1306 North Miami Ave., Downtown Miami.

Every major city has its share of alternative platforms and weekly indie parties on the nightlife circuit. Yet Miami has seen very few live venues and nightlife-driven events that hone in on a colorful diversity of indie music. Back in 1999, POPLIFE emerged as an antidote to the homogenized sheen of South Beach nightlife. Founding partners Aramis Lorie and Barbara Basti (later joined by Jake Jefferson) envisioned a weekly event focused on music and the arts – a social gathering for individuals seeking an alternative to Miami nightlife, and a place to dance and mingle with like-minded individuals.

Throughout the years, POPLIFE has become instrumental in developing Miami as a viable market for non-mainstream acts and talent. In addition to offering a platform to local acts, the organization has produced and promoted numerous events and concerts, including Le Tigre, Peaches, MIA, Of Montreal, Interpol, The Magnetic Fields, Jose Gonzalez, Chicks on Speed, The Faint, Yelle, Ladytron, Ratatat, Prefuse 73, Lansing-Dreiden, Jamie Lidell, Spank Rock, The Walkmen, Mum, Santogold, Green Velvet, Junior Boys, Mylo, Calvin Harris, Chairlift, Cat Power, Modest Mouse, Animal Collective, and many, many more.

Good music is king in the realm of POPLIFE, and its longstanding mission has prevailed as an alternative music outlet, encompassing non-mainstream artists and genres. The POPLIFE nightcrawlers dig into everything from indie rock and electronica to grime, traversing all aural, subterranean spaces in between. The key is to listen and dance all the way through, caroused and blithe.

But POPLIFE has always been more than just a party. It is a culture, and its devotees are passionate and diehard. The founders actually pioneered areas of Miami that are now considered hip, such as the Design District in 2000 when the event was hosted at The Piccadilly Garden. Same with the 14th Street/Downtown Miami club row, when the event was moved to the newly-opened I/O in 2003. Lorie and Basti are downtown trailblazers who have owned and operated venues such as I/O Lounge, The District Restaurant and Lounge, PS14 (28 NE 14th St., 305-358-3600), and – most recently – the new Ecco Pizzateca and Lounge (168 SE 1st St., 305-960-1900), in Downtown Miami.

By now, POPLIFE has garnered international attention and various globetrotting characters have stopped by to join the party – from Moby to Michael Stipe to Irvine Welsh. POPLIFE patrons are innovators, artists, tastemakers, hip kids, and dancing queens. Expanding its horizons, the organization continues to pursue collaborations, such as with The Rhythm Foundation, Le Baron (Paris), MAP Magazine (themapmag.com), Design Miami, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Locust Projects, O.H.W.O.W., and several more. Their official photographer, Nefariousgirl (nefariousgirl.com), has been documenting all the events since 2004.

The POPLIFE collective has also brought its distinct brand to the Beach, producing and promoting weekly parties, such as LoveLife Sundays at The Standard (since 2007, with its infamous, rollicking Bingo game), Good Clean Fun every Thursday at Rok Bar, and Dirty Hairy every Wednesday at LIV at the Fontainebleau.

Currently, the signature event is still hosted at White Room, 1306 North Miami Ave., Downtown Miami, every Saturday night starting at 10pm.

POPLIFE has come a long way from its first incarnation on June 4, 1999. Here’s to ten years, and many more fruitful ones to come.

Photographs – Exxxotica Miami 2009 (NSFW) 5/10/09

So, it has been a while since I posted any photographs, but here are some good ones. Exxxotica Miami!
Note these are probably NOT SAFE FOR WORK. So, if the boss is around, you might want to come back later.
Unfortunately, we did not have much time to go, but we made it by Exxxotica Miami on Sunday afternoon. It was not packed, but there was definitely a decent crowd. I think the whole event was better than last year. More energetic, more starlets and semi-naked girls, more videos on display.

Photographs from Exxxotica Miami on Sunday, May 10, 2009
Yes, I took a lot of photos at Exxxotica this year. Everyone was very cooperative and friendly, and we had a great time!  On with the show!

Last warning – NOT SAFE FOR WORK

The Miami Rescue Mission Health Clinic–Fact Sheet
A partnership between Miami Dade College and the Miami Rescue Mission
DESCRIPTION: The Miami Dade College Medical Center Campus (MDC) and the Miami Rescue Mission (MRM) have a long history of collaboration. Located less than one mile apart, hundreds of MDC nursing and health sciences students and faculty have provided services to the men, women, and children served by the Mission over the years; and many Mission graduates have enrolled and earned degrees from MDC. As part of this partnership, the MDC School of Nursing and the leaders of the MRM created “The Mission Project” in 2000 with the goals of improving student achievement and clinical skills, cultivating civic responsibility, expanding awareness of health needs, and most especially, improving the health of the community’s homeless. A long-term goal of the Mission Project has been to establish an on-site clinic at the Miami Rescue Mission, staffed partly by MDC Nursing and Health Sciences students and faculty, to serve the primary needs of those at the Mission and in the surrounding Overtown neighborhoods. This clinic is scheduled to open on May 14, 2009.
MAIN PARTNERS: Miami Rescue Mission, Miami Dade College Medical Center Campus, Miami-Dade Area Health Education Center (AHEC), MDC Center for Community Involvement.
RATIONALE: The MRM serves approximately 1,000 men, women and children a month. Many of these people have little or no access to health care. The new clinic will serve the clients of the MRM and eventually residents of the Overtown community. The area of the MRM is designated as a “Medically Underserved Area/Population” and as a “Health Professional Shortage Area” by the Department of Health and Human Services.
STAFFING: MRM is the host agency and site of the clinic. Dr. Peter Gutierrez, MD, MMS, PA-C, is Director of MDC’s Physician Assistant program and will coordinate clinical education for Physician Assistant students, while providing medical direction for the clinic. Annette Gibson MSN, MEd, RN, Professor, School of Nursing, will coordinate education and outreach service-learning programs involving MDC Nursing and Health Sciences students and faculty. The clinic will serve as a main clinical site for Physician Assistant students. MDC students and faculty from Nursing and Health Sciences will help staff the clinic, as will students from additional health profession programs from other colleges in South Florida.
CURRENT STATUS: Initial funding was provided by the Boston Scientific Foundation and the Michael Capponi Group for the development and construction of the on-site clinic. The clinic consists of a waiting room, two offices and two patient examination rooms with room for expansion. In February 2009, MRM and MDC personnel received the “Certificate of Need to Practice in an Area of Critical Need” from the Florida State Department of Health in order to open the clinic. Future grant proposals will focus on meeting long-term needs of the Mission Project health clinic including materials and additional staff necessary for operation, as well as outreach screening and education projects.
CLINIC KICK-OFF EVENT: The MRM and MDC are organizing a grand-opening ceremony of the on-site MRM Clinic. This event will include a health fair with education and screening, and treatment of the clinic’s first patients.

The Free Concert will be the Premier of the World Class Orchestra under World Renowned National Conductor Donald Covert. Impact Artists that will be creating Art Masterpieces during the performance will thrill the audience in this rare form of combining two different Art forms.

The Concert and evening activities will help raise funds for ACIOI, SFLPHL and The Organ Donor Awareness Foundation and bring awareness to other Organizations and the many Musicians, Artists and Sponsors that are involved in this worthy project.

There are two Rehearsals at Artserve (Home Base for the Orchestra and ACIOI)
1350 East Sunrise Blvd.
Rehearsals at 6-8 PM
May 12 and May 14
In the Auditorium.

The Press and Public are invited and the purpose of this event is to premier the South Florida Philharmonic Orchestra under the leadership of National Conductor and International Conductor Donald Covert. The Event will be videotaped for distribution to potential Sponsors, Agents, Venue’s and Investors. Contents of this event will be telecast.

GAPAL will be performing his unique Method Chromosymphony and painting 2 pieces each for the 3 concerts.

The Ensemble will be performing to a huge crowd, expected to be at the door and down US1 from the Performing Arts Center in Hollywood. All three Organizations have done a massive ad campaign since early February and we have scheduled several radio interviews and have the news media supporting these causes.

On April 12, ACIOI represented itself and the Orchestra during the Marlins Game at Dolphin Stadium to a large crowd, ACIOI displayed the rare tiger maple Violin donated to the Orchestra at the Community Clubhouse Booth, we are privileged to have the honor of being recognized by the Marlins for our community leadership.

The Art Division of ACIOI has a campaign for utilizing broken and severely damaged musical equipment and instruments and turning them into art. Sales from these treasures from trash will enable the Orchestra to continue in its development.

The funding for major scheduled productions needs Underwriters, Investors and Sponsors on every level. Sponsors that ACIOI does have are; Toshiba, Marlins, Panthers, Heat, Dolphins, Bills, Steelers, Prizewheel.com, The Florida Aquarium, Horse Power Sales of Boynton Beach, New Times, ARTSERVE, Hollywood Performing Arts Center, Association of Fundraising Professionals, S.C.O.R.E., Hard Rock, Chicago Bulls, Cuillo Center for Arts and WLRN.

The South Florida Philharmonic Orchestra is comprised of 40 of the World’s Best Musicians under the Leadership of International and US National Conductor Donald Covert. All of these Musician’s have an active background in touring, are competition winner’s and many of them are teachers. They have sacrificed long and hard to be at the pinnacle of their chosen Instrument and many have the training in several to many Instruments.

This is a team effort made up of outstanding soloists and throughout this endeavor, the Staff of SFLPHL will bring the individual to the forefront to allow that talent to be shared by all of us. The goal of US National Conductor Donald Covert is to bring a full Orchestra of which he is known for in Europe back to Europe with the World Class Musicians that he is presently training with.

Maestro Donald Covert is one of the very few Conductors worldwide that memorize the work and will lead the Orchestra without sheet music. His scholastic Degrees, Worldwide tours and training under Leonard Bernstein, give him the right to proclaim himself as US National Conductor and we agree with the Maestro.

Sóniko is the creative sonic experience conformed by Alex Izaguirre, Javier Güell, Jorge García and Toto González, rooted in Miami’s underground spectrum of various musical tendencies. The 90’s Grunge, Brit Pop, a decisive base of Rock en Español, and fine arrangements of electronic variations mainly influence their sound and style.
In Sóniko’s first album “Kombustión”, their four members took on the enormous task of producing and working with renowned Grammy award winner Marcelo Añez (Shakira-Unplugged & Thalía), who put the final touches and reaffirmed the band’s desired sound.
A CD that got them 3 MTV Español top ten videos and concerts around the USA including SXSW, Latin Alternative Music Conference and Billboard Latin Music Conference among others.

Sóniko’s second album “Antídoto Parcial” shows their growth as composers and it’s evident in a collection of 12 excellent tracks. On this occasion, the band decided to bring back the locally acclaimed “Laberinto” which wasn’t released in “Kombustión”, with the special appearance of Gabriel from Minimal joining Alex on vocals.
The band will celebrate on May 21st at Transit Lounge the release or their new album in Miami with a free event supported by Myspace Latino, Jack Daniels, Gibson and Fábrika. This event will be special because SONIKO will do a live Internet broadcast for all their fans and friends outside Miami. This live broadcast will start at 10PM Eastern time at www.soniko.com
Since their origins in 2002, Sóniko is one of those bands that have triggered Miami’s interest in indie rock in both the Anglo and Latin community. Their local success has reached out to other places such as California, New York, Georgia, Texas and Puerto Rico. Through Fabrika, Myspace, Facebook and several other music related Internet sites, the band has built up a strong international fan base, which is awaiting the moment of Soniko’s powerful live performance to be back and also to be seen for the first time.

In a world caught in a perpetual state of flux, all the more felt by the dominance of communication technologies, Future Shock explores the work of twelve diverse artists who examine the effects of rapid technological, political, and social change in society. The title is a reference to a book written by the futurist Alvin Toffler in 1970. Essential Arthouse in HD Knife In The Water (Nóz w wodzie) by Roman Polanski 5/7/09

ESSENTIAL ARTHOUSE in HD!
An MBC Premiere HD DIGITAL Presentation!
In collaboration with Emerging Pictures
Miami Theatrical HD Premiere!
Knife In The Water (Nóz w wodzie)
(Directed by Roman Polanski/Poland/1962)
With Leon Niemczyk, Jolanta Umecka, Zygmunt Malonowicz
knifeinthewater
Roman Polanski’s first feature is a brilliant psychological thriller that many critics still consider among his greatest work. The story is simple, yet the implications of its characters’ emotions and actions are profound. When a young hitchhiker joins a couple on a weekend yacht trip, psychological warfare breaks out as the two men compete for the woman’s attention. A storm forces the small crew below deck, and tension builds to a violent climax. With stinging dialogue and a mercilessly probing camera, Polanski creates a disturbing study of fear, humiliation, sexuality, and aggression. This remarkable directorial debut won Polanski worldwide acclaim, a place on the cover of Time, and his first Oscar nomination. In Polish with English subtitles.
WINNER: FIPRESCI Prize Venice Film Festival
“It was the maverick Roman Polanski who emerged onto the international film scene in the early 1960s obsessed not so much with the big issues of the day as with the quirks and backwaters of human nature.”-Peter Cowie

Guitarists Jennifer Batten and Vicki Genfan to Perform in Florida Keys 5/18/09

guitars
Batten/Genfan
Monday, May 18
8 p.m.
TIB Amphitheater

On Monday, May 18, at the TIB Bank of the Keys Amphitheater, fans can experience two of the most critically acclaimed guitarists playing today — Jennifer Batten and Vicki Genfan.

At one point Batten was in 6 different bands, playing everything from straight ahead rock, to metal, fusion, and funk. A major turning point came when she was selected from more than 100 guitarists to play in Michael Jackson’s band, resulting in 3 world tours over 10 years and playing in front of almost 5 million people.

Spring of 98’ saw Batten joining legendary guitarist Jeff Beck, resulting in two CDs (“Who Else,” “You Had It Coming”) and corresponding world tours. Says

the Cleveland Plain Dealer of Jennifer’s Rock N Roll Hall of Fame performance honoring Les Paul: “The evening’s showstopper was Jennifer Batten…amazing and technically dazzling.”

Vicki Genfan has captivated both US and international audiences with a unique style that defies description. Winner of the prestigious 2008 Guitar Player’s “Guitar Superstar”Award, Vicki has developed a sound all her own.

As Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle writes, “Genfan doesn’t just play guitar. She also slaps it, tickles it, fondles it, scratches it, tosses it around in her hands and coaxes all kinds of unlikely, rhythmic sounds out of the otherwise simple instrument.”

Vicki is that rare artist whose live performances are becoming legendary among fans.

Genfan’s newest release is “UnCovered.”

Art, Straight from the Ahol BY RAINA MCLEOD Art, Straight from the Ahol With a beard like tar-soaked cotton candy and a mouthful of 24-karat dental work, Alouishous San Gomma is hard to miss. And lucky for our cultural landscape, the Hialeah-born artist and winner of Colt 45’s Ink the Can Contest produces pieces that are just as loud — his weapon of choice being the pen and his canvas all of Miami. Also known as Aholsniffsglue, this dude creates droopy-eyed characters that pepper lightpoles and brick walls city-wide, but this Saturday, catch his work at “P(ART)Y,” a full retrospective of his career and the first exhibit that showcases Ahol’s works exclusively. “I’ve been doing my thing for quite awhile, and I’ve been involved in many different aspects of Miami, from the punk scene to the party scene to art stuff,” Ahol explains. “And this is a collective of what I’ve been doing for the past 10 years.” At Stash Gallery from 7 p.m. to midnight, fellow party boys José El Rey and Slim Biscayne (the other two-thirds of the ¿Que Pasa M.I.A.? crew) will join him, which means there’ll be no better party than this one. Did we mention there’ll be grilled cheese sandwiches?

Perhaps most notorious around Miami for the cryptic stickers and tags bearing his name that pop up on every light pole, mailbox, bar wall, and bus stop, Aholsniffsglue is one of this city’s most mysterious, prolific, and off-the-wall creative spirits. If you’ve been around the gallery circuit a bit (or have even attended one of the raucous parties hosted by his crew, ¿Que Pasa Mia?), then you’ve no doubt seen at least one of his drawings, paintings, or printworks, which often showcase his meticulous line-work in blue ballpoint pen. If you haven’t, tonight is your chance to catch up, as Stash Gallery hosts a retrospective exhibition. Ahol’s ¿Que Pasa Mia? compadre Jose el Rey mans the decks.

Nancy Friedemann
On View May 20, 2009- September 20, 2009
Nancy Friedemann lives and works in Bogota, Colombia and New York. In her paintings, she manipulates symbols that deal with ideas about femininity and the role of women in art history. Friedemann is inspired by Spanish colonial painting styles and Minimalism. In painting these delicate objects in a careful and detailed way, Friedemann monumentalizes them, giving them a heroic place and scale. By re-enacting the process of making lace through drawing and painting, each done with tiny strokes and an economy of materials, Friedemann explores the experience of identity and memory from a feminist perspective.

The Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale and Nova Southeastern University Present: “The Muscular Body as Living Art” A live art exhibition and discussion

On Thursday, July 9, at 6:00 p.m., the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University and the 2009 NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships will unite to present “The Muscular Body as Living Art.” The special event will be held at the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale’s Horvitz Auditorium and outdoor Sculpture Terrace in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This summer’s event is inspired by the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 1976 live exhibition, “The Body as Art,” which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, and Ed Corney.

Ellie Rodriguez, the entertainment reporter for Deco Drive, will host “The Muscular Body as Living Art” – a fun, live exhibition featuring NPC Bodybuilding Champions with commentary by noted faculty from Nova Southeastern University. The faculty will discuss male and female muscular body images throughout art history from sculpture to pop art. During the discussion, NPC Bodybuilding Champions will bring iconic sculptures such as The Thinker, Diana (goddess of the hunt), Hercules (of the Theatre of Pompey), and Michelangelo’s David to life-posed on pedestals. The audience is invited to participate in what promises to be a lively discussion on male and female muscular body images in society.

“Artists for centuries have studied the human body, its contours, beauty, and power,’’ said Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale. “Now, front and center for the first time, and guaranteed to be a one-day blockbuster, we offer you what promises to be an exceptional exhibition of muscular energy.”

The event will be followed by an outdoor party with refreshments featuring bodybuilders posing, live musical performances and an extravagant wall-to-wall screening of the Arnold Schwarzenegger documentary “Pumping Iron.”

“This event will be an exciting pre-event to our 2009 NPC Southern States Championships,” commented Peter W. Potter, NPC National Vice-President & Promoter. “From the classical times of the Greeks & Romans to the present, a muscular physique has been the subject of artists and sculptors world-wide. The participating bodybuilders will exhibit the finest physiques of the present, as they will be in contest shape ready for the July 10-11 2009 NPC Southern States Championships contest.”

“The Muscular Body as Living Art” will be an excellent preview to NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships on July 10th and July 11th at the War Memorial Auditorium in Fort Lauderdale. The NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships is the largest, regional national qualifier east of the Mississippi and includes teenage, adult and senior competitors (both men and women) from ten different states plus Puerto Rico. The NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships is open to any athlete registered by the NPC (National Physique Committee) which is a part of the International Federation of Body Builders, an international amateur sports organization. For more information about the 2009 NPC Southern States Competition please visit www.npcsouthernstates.com.

Opening Kristopher Benedict and Peter Labier – Citygarden and Microscope 5/9/09

citygarden
microscope
Gallery Diet is pleased to announce Citygarden and Microscope, a two-person exhibition by Kristopher Benedict and Peter LaBier.

“Given the sobering adjustments one might expect following the world financial collapse, several weeks ago, New York Times film critic A.O. Scott posed the question ‘What kind of movies do we need now?’ His answer? What the people really need is… neo-realism. … Neo realist films, like other forms of realist art and literature, gain a sense of expository justice in showing ordinary, often boring, deviant or sometimes abject images…”

For this exhibition, Benedict and LaBier have created a series of works that depict the mundane views, and objects of our everyday lives. In his extended exhibition text, Afterimages of the Everyday, Tom McGrath describes one of the title works, Microscope by saying, “It’s been a long time since science moved beyond what can be seen with the naked eye, and sometimes it feels like the artist got left behind in his studio with his brushes and a lousy microscope.”

In art, the desire to turn toward something like “realism” in painting might have less to do with reality, and more to do with resolving some very abstract problems in the everyday.

Citygarden and Microscope will be on view at Gallery Diet from May 9th – June 6th, 2009 and will be accompanied by an extensive text written by Tom McGrath from which the quotes for this press release were taken.

About Diet:
Located at 174 NW 23 Street in Miami, Florida Diet represents five emerging and mid-career artists. Diet’s artist roster includes Brian Burkhardt, Charley Friedman, Richard Höglund, Abby Manock, and Daniel Milewski, whose work is exhibited alongside that of an invitational series of exhibitions by artists from around the world.

David Castillo Gallery presents Gallery Projects 5/9/09

castillo
David Castillo Gallery: Gallery Projects
Alder Guerrier, Aramis Gutierrez, Quisqueya Henriquez, Susan Lee-Chun, Pepe Mar, Glexis Novoa, Javier Piñón, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, Frances Trombly, Wendy Wischer
David Castillo Gallery
2234 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami
May 9- July 31, 2009
Reception May 9, 7-10 pm

David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Gallery Projects, a group show of new work by gallery artists Adler Guerrier, Aramis Gutierrez, Quisqueya Henriquez, Susan Lee-Chun, Pepe Mar, Glexis Novoa, Javier Piñón, Leyden Rodriguez- Casanova, Frances Trombly, and Wendy Wischer.

Glexis Novoa continues to develop a meticulous architecture in the realm of socio-political inquiry with a site-specific drawing for Gallery Projects. Novoa establishes a conduit to Pepe Mar’s site- specific installation of twisted multicolor fantasy, as Orwellian in its penchant for escapism as the brutality of Novoa’s lilliputian detail.

Dwelling in Novoa’s cityscape and illuminated by Mar’s Technicolor is the loss of innocence apparent, too, in the slippery circumstance of Aramis Gutierrez’s new oil on canvas. In At the Water Park, a pregnant couple fumbles to recapture the woman’s missing swimsuit top. The moment is one of greater disconnect similar to the everyday instances of racial and ethnic discrepancy elevated by Adler Guerrier as a black flâneur in his new work on paper.

Startling juxtapositions also exist as the pedestal of 1950’s beauty is shifted in a sinister collaboration between beauty and monstrosity in Javier Piñón’s Medusa collages, while Quisqueya Henriquez’s collages play with the perceived heightened masculinity of Latin cultures by manipulating symbolic male images.

The simplicity of everyday objects is reassessed through subtle alterations in Leyden Rodriguez- Casanova’s mirrored frame. Frances Trombly examines quality and function through painstaking precision to create the optical illusion of a seemingly typical rope, while Wendy Wischer constructs nature through the delicate skill of utilizing manufactured materials to create a moment of organic serenity. Susan Lee-Chun’s Susersize continues the artist’s theme of redefinition in creating a sculpture referencing exercise equipment and warping standard attention to structure.

David Castillo Gallery is proud to announce its participation at VOLTA5 Art Fair in Basel, Switzerland, June 2009. It also recognizes Leyden Rodriguez- Casanova, a Cintas Fellowship Finalist; as well as Susan Lee-Chun’s acceptance to the artist residency Three Walls in Chicago. In the Fall 2009, work by Aramis Gutierrez, Pepe Mar, and Glexis Novoa will be included in TIME + TEMP: Surveying the shifting climate of current painting in South Florida at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, FL. Work by Quisqueya Henriquez, Pepe Mar, and Javier Piñón will appear in a book of 21st century collage published in London; and Adler Guerrier’s monograph will be released by Miami’s [NAME] publications. Gallery artists’ work in current exhibitions include Quisqueya Henriquez, Susan Lee-Chun, and Frances Trombly in With You I Want to Live: The Collection of Francie Bishop Good & David Horvitz at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, FL and Wendy Wischer in Bit, Byte, Dot, Spot: Post-digital Art at the Tampa Museum of Art, FL.

This film is one of the reasons that Shirley Temple is still emblazoned in the minds of Americans today, as Bright Eyes is the film that first brought the song On the Good Ship Lollipop to Depression-era audiences across the country. (Although the song has nothing to do with a ship!) The film features a stand-out performance by Temple, in addition to superb character actors and a broad range of emotions. Aurelio de la Vega was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1925 and studied at the University of Havana (Ph.D. in Law), at the Conservatorio Ada Iglesias (Ph.D., Music Composition) and, independently, with Fritz Kramer (Havana) and Ernst Toch (Los Angeles). De la Vega settled in California in 1959 and became distinguished professor of Music and the director of the Electronic Music Studio at California State University, Northridge. His vast catalogue of works encompasses compositions in all media except opera. He has been very influential in the U.S. musical scene, promoting the contemporary classical music of Latin America. Throughout his teaching years and in the years since his retirement, de la Vega has been an active composer as well as a lecturer in the field of music. His list of compositions includes symphonic pieces, chamber music works, solo instrumental pieces, vocal works, piano, guitar and ballet music and electronic compositions. Major orchestras and prominent soloists throughout the world have performed his works. The composer has been the recipient of many prizes and distinctions, including the Friedheim Award of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which he has received twice. In 2000, de la Vega was honored by the Library of Congress when his graphic score, “The Magic Labyrinth,” was included in the library’s 733-page volume, “Music History from Primary Sources.” Among the music greats included with him were Bartók, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Gershwin, Handel, Liszt, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Puccini, Stravinsky and Verdi.

“As one of the best known Cuban composers of his generation, Aurelio de la Vega offers a dramatic, intense and expressive musical style,” said Hortensia E. Sampedro, president of the Cintas Foundation in announcing the award. “We are pleased to recognize the Maestro for a career that spans more than 50 years and includes recognition from around the world and most recently a nomination for a Latin Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition for his piece Variación del Recuerdo (Variations of a Memory)”.

The award will be presented at a ceremony at the Frost Art Museum of Florida International University on May 20, 2009 at 7:00 pm. The public is invited.
