Broward College’s Visual and Performing Arts department is hosting an opening reception for an art exhibit called “LEFTOVER” on Thursday, August 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery, located on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus (3501 Davie Rd. in Davie). Artist Chao Ding will give a lecture at 5 p.m.

The gallery is located in Fine Arts Building 6 on the southwest corner of the campus. The event is free to attend and no prior registration is necessary.

In “LEFTOVER,” Chao Ding reveals the unusual beauty and poetic significance of deserted spaces through his expressive painting. In mundane scenes of quiet places and exploration of negative space, Ding finds narrative possibilities in a silent dialogue of human absence. Through this imagery that expresses feelings of isolation and displacement, he seeks to create quiet moments of reflection in our fast-paced world, so that new connections may be made.

Chao Ding is a Beijing-native perceptual painter now living and working in Sacramento, California. He received his MFA from Louisiana State University after completing his BA at Beijing University of Technology and postgraduate coursework at SUNY Buffalo State College. Ding’s work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions nationally, including a commission for documentary art from the Burden Rural Life Museum. His residencies include New York’s Golden Foundation and the Vermont Studio Center, and his work is represented by Elliott Fouts Gallery.

The free exhibit will be on display at the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery from August 19 to September 21. The gallery is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and on Monday, September 2 in observance of Labor Day.

Following the global announcement of the discovery of a rare juvenile T. rex specimen by three young boys, the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) is pleased to announce the premiere of T. REX, the giant screen documentary that captured this incredible expedition on camera. This captivating science adventure and a love letter to T. rex, the Greatest of All Tyrants – the GOAT – is now playing at the AutoNation® IMAX® 3D Theater.

Anchored by the true story of the young fossil hunters who made the discovery of a lifetime when they spotted a large, fossilized leg bone on a walk on public lands in North Dakota, T. REX intercuts the remarkable fossil dig, with cutting edge computer graphics that bring the iconic T. rex – from hatchling to hulking adult – to life. Narrated by Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill, T. REX explores the newest science that has helped reinvent our understanding of the iconic predator.

With hat tips to famous specimens, landmark discoveries, and wild cinematic T. rex depictions over the last century, the film also brings to life a cast of prehistoric characters including rex’s archrival, Triceratops; Quetzalcoatlus, one the largest animals ever to take flight; and the 25-foot long Sinraptor, a species that likely fed on early tyrannosaurs.

T. REX is an immersive cinema experience produced by Giant Screen Films and D3D Cinema, in partnership with the Field Museum, Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Houston Museum of Natural Science and Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, in association with the Cincinnati Museum Center, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Museums Victoria, and New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. The T. rex fossil featured in the film was collected on land under the jurisdiction of the US Bureau of Land Management, permit ND2023-00084.

The AutoNation® IMAX® Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science is located at 401 SW 2nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. T. REX is included in the MODS Discovery Pass, an all-in-one ticket that includes Museum exhibitions, live science demonstrations and one IMAX documentary film. Suspicious of their mother, her children slip her some LSD, provoking a wild acid trip in which many secrets are revealed.

Die, Mommie, Die! was first produced in 1999 by Kenneth Elliott and Don Fairbanks at the Coast Playhouse in Los Angeles. In October 2007, the play opened Off-Broadway at New World Stages in New York City. His play The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife ran for 777 performances on Broadway, won the Outer Circle Critics’ John L. Gassner Award for playwrighting, received a Tony nomination for Best Play and is the longest running Broadway comedy of the past 25 years. He wrote and starred in the film versions of his plays, Psycho Beach Party and Die Mommie Die, the latter of which won him the Best Performance Award at the Sundance Film Festival. For two seasons, he appeared as Nat Ginzburg on the HBO series OZ and is the author of the auto-biographical novel Whores of Lost Atlantis. He has directed two films and has appeared as a guest programmer and in numerous documentaries for Turner Classic Movies. He has lectured and conducted master classes at many colleges and universities including NYU, Harvard, UCLA and Amherst College. In 2003, Mr. Busch received a special Drama Desk Award for career achievement as both performer and playwright and was given a star on the Playwrights Walk outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre. He is also the subject of the acclaimed documentary film The Lady in Question is Charles Busch. He is a two-time MAC award winner and has performed his cabaret across the globe.

Sometimes being slow, small or weak can have its advantages in Survival of the Slowest, the newest summer traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, running June 7 through September 5, at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Guests will get an in-depth look at the often-overlooked species that evolved to slow down as part of their survival strategy in a world where large, strong and fast animals are often at the top of the food chain.

The exhibit will feature 14 habitats with live animals (17 species) and plants. Guests will get an up-close look at wildlife with daily presentations featuring a sloth, a tarantula, tortoises, a hedgehog, a blue-tongued skink and more* via wildlife educators and MODS’ Life Sciences staff. Meet animals that have survived for millions of years despite being very slow and learn about the puzzling sides of evolution and adaptation. Discover the difference between warm- and cold-blooded species, explore why some animals need less food than others and see the unique ways they hide from predators.

This educational exhibit looks at the different survival strategies of various species. How can slow and steady win the race? Does bigger always mean better? What animals benefit from being weak rather than strong? This exhibit looks at the advantages and disadvantages of these different traits.

This world class exhibit is produced by Little Ray’s Nature Exhibitions in collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Nature. It is locally sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Little Ray’s Nature Centres is the largest exotic animal rescue organization in Canada with educational programs reaching more than one million Canadians each year. Most of the animals in this exhibition are rescues.

Included with Museum admission.
