In honor of Native American Heritage Month, History Fort Lauderdale will present “Seminole Modern: Photographs and Artifacts from a Changing Florida,” a visual narrative spanning two decades of Tribal contributions to our region, from November 1 – 30, 2026, at the New River Inn History Museum.

The free-to-view exhibit will feature black and white, color and colorized photos plus artwork and artifacts from History Fort Lauderdale’s collection spanning the 1950s – 1960s. The exhibit depicts Seminole lifestyle and industry – including both goods made for Tribe members and tourists. Also on display will be samples of traditional, vibrant patchwork fabrics and native dresses.

Committed to preserving our collective heritage, promoting historical literacy, and fostering a sense of pride and stewardship for the vibrant tapestry of our region’s history, History Fort Lauderdale hosts a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. It seeks to bring awareness to the community through both traveling exhibits and multiple permanent exhibits including “Women Trailblazers: Champions of Change Broward County,” “Fort Lauderdale – the Early Years,” “Roots of Resilience: The Journey of Black Broward,” “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts: the story of boatbuilding along the New River,” “The Growth and History of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office,” “New River Archaeology,” “Viva Fort Lauderdale: Celebrating Hispanic Art & Culture,” and “Take PRIDE, a retrospective on LGBTQ life in South Florida.”

History Fort Lauderdale is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. What do we keep, what do we share, and what do we carry with us? This November, Artist in Residence Marine Fonteyne brings Reclaiming Memories to Gallery 100: photographs printed on archival paper, silk, and fabric, then brought to life with hand embroidery, fiber, collage, and installation. Each piece turns a single image into a layered, textured story.

Four Mondays, four ways in:
Monday, November 2: Opening Reception. Celebrate the opening of Reclaiming Memories. Meet Marine, see the work up close, and end your Monday with art.

Monday, November 9: Embroidering Memories Workshop. Bring a memory and leave with a stitch. Marine leads a hands-on session sharing the techniques she has refined over more than 20 years of turning photographs into thread-woven stories. No experience needed, just curiosity.

Monday, November 16: Embroidering Memories Workshop. A second evening of hands-on embroidery, inspired by Marine’s Sisterhood and Rescue series. Beginners are welcome, and returning stitchers can keep building on last week’s work.

Monday, November 23: Artist Interview with Iggy Font. collaboARTive co-founder Iggy Font sits down with Marine for a live conversation about memory, photography, and thread, and the 20-year practice behind the work. Bring your questions and stay for the art.

About the artist:
Born in Brazil with Belgian roots, Marine Fonteyne is a photo-based multimedia artist who prints evocative images on archival paper, silk, and fabric, then layers in hand embroidery, fiber, collage, and installation. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle. She works from Red Thread Art Studio in Coral Gables.

Join us for a virtual discussion with Reynaldo Lastre and Nils Longueira Borrego as we celebrate the publication of their new book, “Memory in Contemporary Cuban Film and Digital Media: Entangled Temporalities.”

The volume examines how Cuban filmmakers, journalists, artists, and activists have used film, digital technologies, and online platforms to revisit the past, recover suppressed or marginalized memories, and challenge established narratives of Cuban history and identity. Bringing together essays on contemporary and independent cinema, digital archives, online activism, and new forms of media production, the book explores how Cuba’s changing mediascape has become an important arena for debates over memory, citizenship, and the legacies of the Revolution.

The co-editors will introduce the book and discuss its central themes, followed by commentary from Paloma Duong and a Q&A with the online audience.

Presentations will be delivered in English and Spanish.

Between the acceptance of germ theory in the 1880s and the antibiotic revolution of the twentieth century, works of art enjoyed a unique moment in which they functioned in medicinal terms for both artists and viewers. This talk considers, for example, how the painter Abbott Thayer addressed his fear of disease by turning his children into the subject of art following the death of his wife from tuberculosis. Color, culture and celebration! The community is invited to CityPlace Doral’s Fifth Annual Day of the Dead “Día de los Muertos” Celebration. Dia de los Muertos is believed to be the one day of the year that the souls of past ancestors reunite with the living.

Starting Friday, Oct. 2, CityPlace Doral will be vibrantly decorated with colorful Dia de Los Muertos-themed décor through Nov. 3, recognizing this culturally rich Latin American tradition. The installation will culminate with a free community event on Sunday, Nov. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The décor will celebrate the beauty and traditions of Día de los Muertos, bringing CityPlace Doral to life with vibrant colors, beautiful floral installations and unique photo opportunities. Guests will experience intricate papel picado-inspired high-gloss acrylic in vivid orange, purple, turquoise and pink, complemented by decorative sugar skulls and floral accents suspended throughout the boulevard. The installation will feature three oversized skeletons emerging from the plaza fountain, a custom swing with floral and decorative accents, and a custom butterfly bench in the Fountain Plaza. Inspired by traditional Día de los Muertos elements, including papel picado, calaveras (sugar skulls) and floral accents, the décor’s colors and designs hold rich cultural significance and pay homage to the tradition’s ancient heritage.

The main Day of the Dead event will take place on Sunday, November 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. The community is invited to celebrate life through cultural performances, an “El Mercado” vendor market, food sampling, a face gem station and festive photo opportunities throughout the Fountain Plaza. Guests and pets are encouraged to dress in the Day of the Dead theme.

Throughout the month-long installation, visitors are encouraged to take festive photos or snap a selfie and tag @CityPlaceDoral for a chance to be featured on the Center’s social media.

From October 23 through November 1, 2026, Coconut Grove Harvest will bring pumpkins, costumes and neighborhood discoveries to the Grove, with a pumpkin patch on Fuller Street and a Halloween evening of storytelling, live entertainment and trick-or-treating.

Presented by the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District (BID), the celebration pairs seasonal traditions with the village’s tree-lined streets, independent shops and local gathering places. Families can make an afternoon of exploring the pumpkin patch, return in costume for Halloween, and discover participating businesses through a new stamp scavenger hunt that carries the celebration into the holiday season.

A Pumpkin Patch Beneath the Grove’s Canopy
From October 23 through November 1, Fuller Street will host a pumpkin patch in the heart of the neighborhood. The seasonal setting offers a place for fall photos surrounded by the Grove’s tropical landscape, with shops and restaurants nearby for a longer visit.

At CocoWalk, a fall-themed photo opportunity will add another stop for families and friends from October 30 through November 1.

Halloween, Village Style
On Saturday, October 31, from 6 to 8 p.m., Fuller Street and Downtown Coconut Grove will host a family-friendly Halloween celebration. The evening’s lineup includes:

This workshop introduces students to gelli printing, a fun and experimental printmaking process that creates one-of-a-kind monotype prints without a press. Open to beginners and experienced artists alike, participants will explore foundational techniques on paper and textiles using gelli plates, while developing their own visual language through color, texture, layering, and mark-making.

Through demonstrations, guided prompts, hands-on experimentation, and group discussion, students will learn techniques including charcoal transfer, collagraphy, and Posca marker transfer. Johnny is a Miami native grew up in church, studied theater at Miami Dade College (AA), and The University of the Arts (BFA), Philadelphia PA. In Philly, he rediscovered his roots in music and returned to the Miami music scene with his cousin Roosevelt Collier. Eventually, he started WalkerTown with his brother Big E of the Leeboys. Throughout the year, he works as a featured artist on Virgin Voyages with The Leeboys and plays in Miami with various bands, including WalkerTown and MaddJazz. He lives his life by the WalkerTown moto “anywhere you find a beat.” Music is love and he works to share his music with you.

The show will feature an internationally acclaimed Flamenco guitarist as a guest artist.

Anthony Tran studied flamenco guitar all across Andalucía with various teachers in Granada, Jerez, Córdoba and more. For the past decade, he has managed Boston-based group Flamenco Boston and has worked with local dancers and and dance companies to bring the excitement of flamenco through performances and workshops all over New England, including the Isabella Stewart Gardner and the museum of Fine Arts and to universities including MIT, Harvard, Northeastern, where he composed music for and performed in their production of Federico García Lorca´s Yerma. He has performed and continues to perform regularly at venues in Boston and NYC.

Aylin Bayaz is a contemporary Flamenco dancer, relocated to NYC in September 2024. She trained at the Amor de Dios studios in Madrid and the Institute of the Arts Barcelona (MA Dance 2018) among other academies. Her duo show “Flamencodanza”, winner of award “Best show of Dance and physical theatre” Hollywood Fringe 2022, has toured internationally since 2021 performing over 350 shows in Europe, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the US.

A bicycle can be a big-ticket item that lands on holiday gift lists every year, but not every family can afford to fulfill that wish. For 45 years, Rick Case Bikes for Kids has been collecting gently used bicycles from the community that will be passed along to local children and teens who are yearning for a set of wheels. From October 1 until December 20, the community is encouraged to bring bikes they’re no longer riding to any Rick Case Automotive Group dealership.

The dealerships will ensure the bolts are tightened and the tires are inflated before distributing the bikes to children and teens at the Boys & Girls Clubs, Habitat for Humanity, Women in Distress and other local charitable organizations, churches, synagogues and schools. The OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fall Edition presents the Florida premiere of the heartwarming romantic comedy Before I Do (United States, 2026), its Closing Night Film, on Oct. 25., at 6 p.m., at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex (212 NE 59th Terrace, Miami). An afterparty will follow the screening.

John Michael is just days away from marrying the man he believes is the love of his life when he reunites with his best man, Alex—who also happens to be his former flame. What begins as a carefree bachelor weekend at a secluded lakeside cabin quickly spirals into romantic chaos as old feelings resurface and long-buried questions refuse to stay hidden. Egged on by a group of mischievous friends determined to play matchmaker, the wedding party finds itself navigating unexpected attractions, second chances, and hilarious complications. With heart, humor, and plenty of awkward moments, Before I Do is a charming romantic comedy about love, timing, and discovering where you truly belong.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not!® Christmas Park is offering Miami-Dade and Broward County high school seniors the opportunity to win a full scholarship to Miami Dade College. The winner of the Legacy of Valor Social Studies Challenge will be recognized at an awards ceremony held during the opening night of Ripley’s Believe It or Not!® Christmas Park on Thursday, November 12, 2026, starting at 5 p.m. This year’s family-friendly Christmas park will take over Amelia Earhart Park (401 E. 65th St., Hialeah, FL 33013) and run through Sunday, January 3, 2027.

The scholarship challenge aims to help students explore significant achievements and milestones in American history. Participants must write a 1,500-word essay and build a 3D model that brings their research to life. The essays will be judged by an esteemed panel from Miami Dade College, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and Broward County Public Schools. The winner of the scholarship challenge will be treated to a special evening at Ripley’s Believe It or Not!® Christmas Park, enjoying the experience with their classmates and friends.

The Legacy of Valor Social Studies Challenge offers students an opportunity to gain valuable research and critical-thinking skills. Participants will be invited to attend the awards ceremony on opening night of Ripley’s Believe It or Not!® Christmas Park, a massive holiday amusement park filled with carnival rides for all ages, dazzling live shows, and jaw-dropping attractions from the world of Ripley’s Believe It or Not!®. Ripley’s Christmas Park will feature photo ops with Santa and iconic oddities from Ripley’s Believe It or Not!®, the brand renowned for celebrating the odd and extraordinary. “25 Cats of Qatar” Synopsis: Qatar is one of the world’s wealthiest nations, and its rapid growth is powered by migrant workers who make 89% of the population. But underneath the luxurious surface lies an overwhelming street cat population where disease is rampant, the heat is extreme, and expats are burdened to help the struggling felines.

When an American flight attendant and cat cafe owner becomes aware of the crisis, she hatches a plan to fly 25 cats to Milwaukee, where her cat cafe provides a pipeline for adoption. Presenting a microcosm of a global crisis, the film asks searching questions about animal welfare, all within a ticking-clock narrative about the nuts and bolts of a rescue mission. It is both an urgent wake-up call and a heartwarming story of overcoming international barriers for a common goal.

Through its “Find Your One” process, PURRR’s team helps future cat moms and dads find their soul cat and guides them every step of the way. With over 150 adoptable cats, the PURRR team knows every cat – their personality, history, quirks and what kind of home they need to become themselves fully. Whether future cat parents are seeking a playful and energetic kitten, a calm and cuddly adult cat, or a wise and gentle senior, PURRR’s diverse selection of feline friends ensures there’s a perfect match for every home. Soul cat profiles built around personality are available on each feline friend in PURRR’s care.

The “Find Your One” experience starts with filling out an application to help PURRR’s team understand the adoptee’s preferences, lifestyle, and what they’re looking for in a cat companion. Within 48 hours, a PURRR team member will schedule a meet and greet for the chance to see firsthand the personalities and quirks of feline residents. After connecting with a potential furry family member, PURRR schedules a 15-minute in-home, educational consultation to ensure a smooth integration into the home. PURRR prioritizes the new feline family member’s well-being and conducts a comprehensive final medical examination and bloodwork before taking the lifelong feline companion home. The PURRR team will check in after a week to ensure a smooth transition and address any questions. Beyond adoption day, PURRR provides support, resources, and guidance throughout the journey as a pet owner.

The OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fall Edition presents the international premiere of the romantic drama Love on a Tightrope (Spain, 2026), its Noche Cinemundo Ladies’ Spotlight Film, on Oct. 23., at 7 p.m., at Silverspot Cinema – Downtown Miami. An afterparty will follow the screening.

Set in 1968, Love on a Tightrope is inspired by the real encounter between legendary trapeze artist Pinito del Oro and poet Natalia Sosa Ayala. When Pinito hires Natalia to help write her memoirs during her final tour with the Circo Price, what begins as a professional collaboration slowly evolves into an emotionally charged and deeply intimate connection. Through letters exchanged over decades and memories reimagined across time, the film reconstructs a relationship shaped as much by longing and imagination as by reality. Blending lyrical storytelling with restrained emotional intensity, Arima León’s debut explores love, silence, and the constraints imposed by a society unable to name what exists between them.

The film is in Spanish with English subtitles and runs 116 minutes.

The OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fall Edition runs through Oct. 25 with select films available for OUTshine At-Home viewing from Oct. 26 – Nov. 1.

The OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fall Edition presents the historical mystery-drama Narciso (Paraguay, Brazil, Portugal, Germany, Spain, France, Uruguay, 2026), its Noche Cinemundo Men’s Spotlight Film, on Oct. 23., at 7:25 p.m., at Silverspot Cinema – Downtown Miami. An afterparty will follow the screening.

Paraguay, 1959. Returning from Buenos Aires with rock ‘n’ roll in his veins, the charismatic Narciso quickly becomes a radio sensation and a symbol of freedom in a nation suffocated by the military dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner. Admired by both men and women, his magnetic presence challenges the country’s rigid social order. But after his final performance, Narciso is found dead under mysterious circumstances. As rumors spread and fear silences the truth, his death exposes a society shaped by repression, prejudice, and political control. Inspired by real events, Marcelo Martinessi crafts a haunting portrait of a nation where identity, desire, and dissent carry deadly consequences.

The film is in Spanish and Guaraní with English subtitles and runs 101 minutes.

The OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fall Edition runs through Oct. 25 with select films available for OUTshine At-Home viewing from Oct. 26 – Nov. 1.

Dunye stars as Cheryl, a young Black lesbian working at a video store who becomes fascinated by a Black actress from the 1930s known only as “The Watermelon Woman.” Her search to uncover the actress’s identity becomes a deeply personal exploration of race, sexuality, representation, history, and the stories of Black women that have too often been overlooked.
Written, directed, and edited by Cheryl Dunye, The Watermelon Woman was the first feature film directed by a Black lesbian and remains an influential work of queer cinema.
