Spring has sprung on Fort Lauderdale Beach! The LOOP (Las Olas Oceanside Park) will swing into the spring season with the 3rd Annual Spring Fling EGGstravaganza. The event will provide a “hole” lot of fun for the whole family to enjoy.

Sponsored in major part by the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Improvement District, attendees are encouraged to bring their baskets, choose between two egg hunts for children of all ages, and recycle their egg hunt eggs into make-and-take pieces of art. Following the hunt, guests can enjoy a special round of Golf with the Bunny, photo ops, the farmers market and entertainment, which include:

• Farmer’s Market, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.: Shop and stroll local vendors displaying an eclectic selection of art, clothing, jewelry, home goods, pet supplies, body care and more. Following the egg hunt, local food vendors will have all the makings to purchase all the makings for a picnic to enjoy on the main lawn.
• Egg Hunt ‘Scramble,’ 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.: Children 13 and under are encouraged to bring an Easter basket and gather on the water feature at 10 a.m. for The LOOP’s egg hunt countdown. The egg hunt will be divided into three approximate starting times. Children under 5 will begin at 10 a.m., children ages 6-9 will begin at 10:30 a.m. and children ages 10-13 will begin at 11 a.m. Free pre-registration online is encouraged.
• Golden Egg Hunt: 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.: Start searching! Meet at the Pixar Putt Hut for the Golden Egg Hunt Countdown. There will be six golden eggs hidden around Las Olas Oceanside Park. The lucky few to find the golden eggs will enjoy a round of Pixar Putt with the Easter Bunny. Day of only – tickets valid for a family of 4 with a start time of 11:30 a.m.
• Golf with the Bunny, 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Don’t miss the last chance to play a round of Pixar Putt at Las Olas Oceanside Park on this final day of the Fort Lauderdale tour. A limited number of discounted tickets, sponsored by the LOOP, are available for tee times between 11:30 – 2 p.m.
• Children’s Arts & Crafts: In recognition of Earth Month, The LOOP’s children’s craft corner will feature make-and-take crafts that are good for the planet by recycling the egg hunt eggs into a flower, dinosaur or egg in a cup. Day of crafts available while supplies last.

Save the date of Saturday, July 22, to help The Salvation Army of Broward County “krush” poverty and homelessness in South Florida! Advance registration is open to walk, run and roll in The Salvation Army of Broward County’s sixth annual holiday-themed Kettle Krush 5K at Markham Park (16001 West State Road 84) in Sunrise) featuring returning special guest host WPLG Local 10’s Roy Ramos. The all-ages and team-encouraged event is designed to raise awareness and funds for families in need. Register at https://bit.ly/KettleKrush5K2023.

For the past five years, over 500 participants have raised awareness and funds to “krush” homelessness and hunger in South Florida. The funds raised provide essential resources for impoverished families to get out of poverty and become financially stable. The Salvation Army serves over 50,000 Broward County residents, every year, and more than 70% of its funding comes directly from the community – individuals, groups and businesses.

The race is named after The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles which are staffed during the holidays to collect funds for families in need. Each holiday season, The Salvation Army raises hundreds of thousands of dollars and distributes more than 7,000 gifts to families below the poverty line in Broward County.

The racecourse at Markham Park is sanctioned by the USATF, and the race will be timed by AccuChipUSA, Inc. Participants are encouraged to dress in holiday and Christmas attire and bring their festively adorned pets. Awards will be given to runners in “Top 3” categories, age groups and for the wackiest holiday attire for both themselves and their pets. The all-ages event will also include a kids’ zone with art, crafts and a bounce house.

Early registration fees are $10 for kids (ages up to 9), $25 for students (ages 10 – 17) and for seniors (60+) and $30 for registrants (18 and over). Team registration is $25 per person for teams of five or more. A free commemorative race t-shirt will be given to all registrants. Markham Park entry fee also will be waived for all Kettle Krush 5K participants. Parking will be complimentary and available directly across from the Runner’s Pavilion area.

In preparation for the onset of warmer weather, participating YMCA of South Florida locations are hosting “Swim for Jenny Week,” five days of free swim lessons and water safety instruction to children and adults of all ages from Monday, March 20 to Friday, March 24. During the year, 11,000 children and adults are taught drowning prevention and water safety techniques at the YMCA of South Florida.

Named after Jenny, a one-of-a-kind child who was energetic, beautiful and blessed with a loving family but lost her life because she did not know how to swim, “Swim for Jenny Week” seeks to strengthen local communities, impacting the lives of thousands by teaching drowning prevention and water safety techniques.

Spring Break Theater Camp 2023 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts returns for five days of singing, dancing, acting and performances at the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center this spring break, March 20-24.

The camp culminates in a live performance of Hooray for Hollywood! on a professional stage at the Broward Center under the direction of The Performance Project School of the Arts’ Executive Director Nina Felice, who shares hands-on experience in musical theater, acting, dance, voice and technical production with students from different ages and experience.

Camps are divided into age-appropriate groups for grades 2 – 5 (Group A), grades 6 – 8 (Group B) and grades 9 -12 (Teen Program, Group C). Campers in the Teen Program earn volunteer hours by helping the younger campers in the morning. Afterwards, they receive coaching on a song and/or monologue in the afternoon which they perform on the final day. This program is especially helpful for teens who are preparing for competitions and auditions.

All three camps are held from Monday, March 20 through Friday, March 24 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuition is $295 for Groups A and B and $150 for Group C. Early camp hours are available from 8 – 9 a.m. for $35; after camp hours are available from 4 – 6 p.m. for $65.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with H.J. Zeger, author of “The Help of Angels,” on Monday, April 17, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. His appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed.

The Help of Angels invites readers to view life in Europe before and during the Holocaust from a personal and highly unique perspective. The Help of Angels is a moving historical novel that takes readers on a journey through the time period of 1933 to 1945, showcasing the experiences of Benjamin Weiss, a young man who witnesses the atrocities of the Holocaust firsthand. The novel follows Ben’s life in a small Hungarian town, his family’s survival and loss during the Second World War, and his imprisonment in the Mauthausen concentration camp. The novel tells the fate of one family while highlighting the experience of millions who suffered at the hands of Hungarian and Nazi war criminals. The book is available on Amazon.com and at History Fort Lauderdale’s Museum Shop.

H.J. Zeger is a self-taught writer who established his independent publishing company, Sunbridge Books. He grew up in Newburgh, New York, and attended the Culinary Institute of America before pursuing a career in the catering, restaurant, and hotel business. The author’s first book, If Frogs Could Fly, is a satirical tale about a search for a lost tribe of Israel in the Amazon Jungle of Peru. Although it is currently unavailable in print, the novel is being made into an audiobook.

History Fort Lauderdale hosts a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. Permanent exhibits include “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts,” a visual narrative weaving the story of the ever-changing use of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways by following the strokes of the first people to today’s sightseers, “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of stories and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.

This month, The Casino @ Dania Beach hosts the Broward Sheriff’s Office and One Blood at the festivities. Community representatives from both organizations will hand out free goodie bags, fire safety-related giveaways and even Miami Heat tickets while supplies last to those who donate blood.

“We look forward to hosting another entertaining community event bringing together South Florida’s best Caribbean food trucks, great dance music, and a party atmosphere for people of all ages,” said Joe Eshkenazi, Director of Entertainment & Events at The Casino @ Dania Beach.

“Rock the Block” is a free, monthly food truck event held the third Saturday of every month outside in the casino’s spacious parking lot. The family-friendly event also includes live entertainment with a rotating D.J. and games for both adults and kids.

To support the ongoing fight against drunk driving and drugged driving, thousands of people will walk and run during the 12th Annual UKG & The Salah Foundation Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K presented by the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County and UBS. The event includes an in-person race on Sunday, May 7 starting near Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale, plus a virtual participation option.

Festivities will include children’s activities, an awards ceremony, live musical performances, and vendor/educational booths. The event will be attended by dignitaries including Walk Like MADD Fort Lauderdale Founder and Honorary Chairperson Heather Geronemus, MADD National President and Walk Like MADD Fort Lauderdale Honorary Co-Chair Tess Rowland, and Major Robert Chandler of Florida Highway Patrol. MADD announced Rowland as the national president on Feb. 6, 2023. Rowland is an American Heritage School alumna.

Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K is a community-driven 5K that raises awareness about drunk driving and underage drinking while uniting community members around MADD’s mission. Since it was established in 2011, this event has raised more than $3.5 million that stays in the South Florida community to save lives and support victims of drunk driving, making it the most successful grassroots fundraiser in the history of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Every dollar donated remains in South Florida to provide victim services and prevention education at no cost.

“We are pleased to continue to hold this important event, which raises both awareness and funds to eliminate drunk and drugged driving and provide free victim services and prevention education in South Florida,” said Geronemus, who is also the immediate past chairwoman of the MADD National Board of Directors. “Every 48 minutes, someone in this country is killed by a drunk driver but we all have the power to stop that from happening.” Geronemus’ late father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009.

Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach will once again host Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s 12th Annual “Claws for Kids” presented by the Carmen Rebozo Foundation in memory of Judy Kramer. The fundraising lunch will take place on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, kicking off with a cocktail reception at 11 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. Guests will enjoy delicious stone crabs and other signature menu items without the wait. Mother and daughter duo, Lisa Mendelson and Lindsey Mendelson Pearson are graciously co-chairing this year’s event once again. Olga Guilarte is the Special Event Chair. “Claws for Kids” is one of the last chances to enjoy stone crabs before stone crab season ends.

“Claws for Kids” is held in memory of Judy Kramer, a longtime Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Board member, who helped create the event and chaired it since its inception until her passing in February 2021.

Proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s many positive programs and services at its six Clubs and sites combined, including after school programs, homework assistance, computer training, social skills, dance, arts & crafts, professional mentoring, and summer and athletic programs.

American Academy, a program within American Heritage Schools, is pleased to host “Communicate with Confidence – Techniques for Students with Learning Differences,” a virtual event via Zoom on Tuesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. EST. This event is part of American Academy’s monthly speaker series, “Experts in Learning Differences.” Hosted by Alexandra Rollins, admissions director of the American Academy Program, the expert speaker for the March event is Eric J. Nach, Ph.D., M.Ed., A.S.D.C., founder and president of the Support for Students Growth.

Before, during and after college, what are the skills young adults with learning differences need in the twenty-first century? The answer is soft skills, also known as communication, time management, organizational and social skills, all of which are vital to student success in college and beyond. Join Dr. Nach, a top developmental and behavioral specialist in the enhancement of student growth and college life skills, who will explain how parents and professionals can identify underdeveloped soft skills and take proactive measures to help students gain greater levels of social and perceptual skills and boost self-confidence to thrive in college and in life.

Dr. Nach is the founder and president of the Support for Students Growth Center located in Boca Raton, Florida. He began his career as a “milieu therapist,” before spending 18 years as a special education department chairperson and teacher with the Palm Beach County school district. Dr. Nach earned a Ph.D., focusing on his dissertation titled “Instructional Use of Research-Based Interventions for Students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.” He is also a nationwide speaker who has presented full-day professional (CEU) workshops in nearly a hundred cities to professionals in the field. Dr. Nach addresses topics such as the perceptional, social, behavioral and transitioning needs of students with learning, developmental and perceptual differences and has over three decades of experience counseling, teaching and coaching children, teens, young adults and their families.

The flavors are sizzling with cultural diversity for the annual Creole Food Festival. This national festival makes a stop in Miami and will showcase an all star lineup of black and brown female chefs, cuisines and beverages from the Caribbean, Africa, Latin America, American South and South America on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at the Ancient Spanish Monastery, 16711 West Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach, FL from 3pm to 8pm.

“The term Creole is a person of mixed European and Black descent, especially in the Caribbean. The Creole Food Festival was created as a platform to highlight the talents of black and brown chefs. The new ventanita store in Little Haiti is a project that Pilar Guzman and her team hold dear to their hearts, as they aim to bring life to a growing neighborhood with a history that welcomes family businesses and cultural diversity. 
In August 2008, Pilar Guzman Zavala and Juan Zavala created Half Moon Empanadas. When they opened their first location in Miami Beach, they aimed to become a competitive takeout-centered restaurant like many pizza and burger chains in the United States. However, it was less profitable than they had imagined. So, when they participated in a street food festival and sold out of all their empanadas, they realized they needed to change their selling strategy. Soon after, they started to sell Half Moon Empanadas via a cart stand at a college campus, the Miami airport, and quickly perfected their new on-the-go sell strategy.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra will present a bold and daring evening of Dvořák Masterworks, featuring his love letter to America, Symphony No. 9 in E minor: “From the New World” as well as Cello Concerto in B minor, the greatest of all cello concertos, performed by Grammy Award-winning artist Zuill Bailey – who also appeared during the Symphony’s inaugural concert 25 years ago. Funding Arts Broward (FAB), celebrating its 20th anniversary of preserving and cultivating the arts, will host its Annual Meeting and Reception on Tuesday, March 14, from 6 – 8 p.m., at Dune by Laurent Tourondel (2200 N. Ocean Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale). Attendees will enjoy a curated menu of specialty tapas, hand-selected wine pairings and panoramic ocean views from the North Terrace while being serenaded by FAB grantee Brazilian Voices’ Beatriz Malnic, Loren Oliveira, and Viviane Neves performing American standards plus Bossa Nova and Samba favorites.
Brazilian Voices is a nonprofit women’s vocal ensemble that performs at cultural community and philanthropic events. Aspiring to incorporate the best of global Brazilian culture, the group evolved out of a vocal technique workshop organized by Beatriz Malnic and Loren Oliveira in 2001. Since then, these two musical directors have brought together a cast of devoted women, who volunteer their voices and time promoting and preserving the rich multicultural Brazilian heritage fostering multicultural exchange, music appreciation, and education.

Last October, FAB announced its “Be The Spark,” fundraising campaign. The initiative was launched with a lead gift of $750,000 from FAB Founder Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz and had a total of more than $1.1 million pledged in advance of the campaign’s public announcement. The campaign aims to raise $3 million over the next five years that will significantly increase FAB’s grantmaking pool including expanding grants for arts education, encourage collaboration and new works and establish an endowment at the Community Foundation of Broward.

Through this campaign, FAB will be able to expand its support to groups beginning with the grant applications to be announced for the upcoming 2024 program year.

Since its inception in 2003, FAB has endowed grants of over $4 million to 65 small, mid-sized, and large professional performing and visual arts organizations. FAB is supported by membership whose dues go toward these grants that preserve and cultivate the arts in Broward County. FAB is also supported by its corporate partners BBX Capital, New River Fine Arts, Northern Trust, PNC Bank, Weston Jewelers, Pallant Insurance Agency, Casa D’Angelo, Tim Singer Realty and Twig, Trade & Tribunal.

Let’s celebrate the incredible women artists in honor of Women’s History Month. Inspired by British artist Bridget Riley, this workshop is all about color and patterns. Riley is a painter who often uses optical illusions in her work. Participants will use taping techniques and paint to create their own masterpieces. The prestigious American Heritage Schools, the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory schools, are pleased to announce that its summer programs, including Day Camp and Summer Institute, will be offered in-person or online during Summer 2023. The summer programs will run for nine weeks starting June 12 through August 11, 2023.

Summer Camp Programs:
American Heritage Schools’ summer camp programs are designed for children ages 3-14. In addition to Day Camp, specialty camps vary by campus, and include Robotics, Art, Science, Musical Theatre, Video Production and Sports camps. Each camper enjoys age-appropriate activities supervised by American Heritage Schools’ highly qualified staff.

Cabins for ages 3-5 are co-ed, while ages 6-13 have separate cabins for boys and girls. All cabins, which are classrooms during the school year, are air conditioned and campers take pride in decorating them to reflect the cabin’s theme.

To expand the number of recreational activities available to campers ages 8-13, age-appropriate field trips are scheduled. Bus transportation is provided by C & L Bus Company, which is owned and operated by American Heritage Schools, and all drivers are properly licensed and screened. All field trips are supervised by Off-Campus Directors as well as an appropriate number of counselors. Prior to starting camp, campers will receive a schedule of activities.

The summer camps are directed by state-certified teachers and college or high school students who have been carefully screened by American Heritage Schools. Many of the counselors are students or alumni of the school or have been campers or Counselors In Training (CITs) for a number of years. They are well-trained in safety and camp policies.

Summer Institute:
The American Heritage Summer Institute is a summer educational program that offers over 120 enrichment and reinforcement courses (three-week sessions or weekly seminars), specifically designed with student interest and engagement in mind, to students from PK3 through 12th grade. Most of the classes are offered live online and/or in person at one of American Heritage Schools’ two 40-acre campuses. The Broward Campus is located in Plantation, Florida, and the Palm Beach Campus is located in Delray Beach, Florida.

American Heritage Schools’ course offerings are often viewed as the gold standard in college-preparatory education and the Summer Institute continues that standard. High school course offerings include advanced test prep, honors and AP level research work, as well as unique pre-professional programs for those interested in future careers in medicine, law, or business entrepreneurship.

The Summer Institute also offers a wide variety of enrichment and reinforcement programs for Junior High School (grades 6-8) and Lower School (Pre-K 3 to 5th grade) students as well as one-on-one tutoring options for those looking to enhance their skills and build confidence as we head into the new school year.

Museum of Graffiti announces the opening of a novel exhibition presenting art works created with air pollution. Also incorporated into the camp experience are classes in dance improvisation, dance history, musical theatre, yoga, music terminology, nutrition, stage makeup, arts and crafts, and more.

Each session is designed with a different theme that concludes with a performance showcasing the many talents of all participating campers (excluding half day campers.) Showtime is every Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Parents are welcome to watch via Zoom.

The summer dance camp will entail eight, one-week sessions starting the week of June 13 through August 4. Dates and themes include:

• Week 1 (June 13-16): Dancing Through the Decades – Dance, Dance, Dance! Join Meg Segreto’s Dance Centre for a fun and energetic hip-hop week with music from several decades. The music will be turned up and the lights will be turned down for its annual glow party!
• Week 2 (June 19-23): Welcome to New York – Campers will experience the “Big Apple” as they celebrate Musical Theatre. Participants will be dancing, singing and acting to their favorite show tunes and learning special choreography straight from New York City.
• Week 3 (June 26-30): Adventures of Universal – Calling all Universal Studios fans. Campers will dance their way through the adventures of Harry Potter, The Minions and Dr. Seuss. Participants can show their team support for Spirit Week and Color War.
• Week 4 (July 3-7): Welcome to the Jungle – Take a walk on the wild side! Dancers will jam to songs from The Jungle Book, Tarzan, and The Lion King. Campers will enjoy a safari experience and animal face painting, too.
• Week 5 (July 10-14): Hey Mickey! – Participants’ dancing dreams will come true during this week of Disney magic, where they will celebrate all things Walt Disney World!
• Week 6 (July 17-21): Life in the Dreamhouse – This one’s for the girls – a week of fitness, friendship, and fabulousness! Join Meg Segreto’s Dance Centre for student choreography, a fashion show, and a pampering spa day.
• Week 7 (July 24-28): Under the Sea – Get ready for an underwater experience as dancers perform The Little Mermaid using new music from the hit live-action film.
• Week 8 (July 31-Aug. 4): Soak Up the Sun – Campers will say goodbye to summer as they dance to favorite tropical beats and celebrate with the annual End of Summer water fight on Friday.

Campers are encouraged to bring a healthy lunch as well as snacks that do not require refrigeration. Dance campers will have pizza every Friday, as it’s Pizza Day (included in tuition).

What to Wear:
• Leotards and tights (shorts/skirts over leotards and tights are optional.)
• Ballet, Tap, and Jazz shoes and sneakers.
• Hair must be worn in a bun or a secure ponytail.

When:
Camp hours for ages 5 to 13 are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A half-day option for ages 3-5 is available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Campers must bring lunch and must be fully potty trained, out of diapers/pull ups and able to use the restroom independently.

Pre-care drop-off is available at 8 a.m. for an additional $5. After-care is available from 3-6 p.m.

To support the ongoing fight against drunk driving and drugged driving, thousands of people will walk and run during the 12th Annual UKG Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K presented by the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County. The event includes an in-person race on Sunday, April 30 starting near Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale, plus a virtual participation option.

Festivities will include children’s activities, an awards ceremony, live musical performances, and vendor/educational booths. The event will be attended by dignitaries including Walk Like MADD Fort Lauderdale Founder and Honorary Chairperson Heather Geronemus, MADD National President and Walk Like MADD Fort Lauderdale Honorary Co-Chair Tess Rowland, and Major Robert Chandler of Florida Highway Patrol. MADD announced Rowland as the national president on Feb. 6, 2023. Rowland is an American Heritage School alumna.

Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K is a community-driven 5K that raises awareness about drunk driving and underage drinking while uniting community members around MADD’s mission. Since it was established in 2011, this event has raised more than $3.5 million that stays in the South Florida community to save lives and support victims of drunk driving, making it the most successful grassroots fundraiser in the history of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Every dollar donated remains in South Florida to provide victim services and prevention education at no cost.

“We are pleased to continue to hold this important event, which raises both awareness and funds to eliminate drunk and drugged driving and provide free victim services and prevention education in South Florida,” said Geronemus, who is also the immediate past chairwoman of the MADD National Board of Directors. “Every 48 minutes, someone in this country is killed by a drunk driver but we all have the power to stop that from happening.” Geronemus’ late father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009.

Island City Stage, in co-production with Out Front Theatre Company in Atlanta, will present the South Florida debut of “I Wanna F#%*ing Tear You Apart” by Morgan Gould, from March 2 – April 2. Bring your bestie to see this new limited show that tackles love, friendship and jealousy with a touch of snark. It’s “Will & Grace” on steroids!

Samantha and Leo are a team – best friends, roommates, allies against the world – until a new friend enters and upends their co-dependent world of mutual self-loathing and “Grey’s Anatomy” marathons. A play about the nature of friendships in all of its f#%*ked up forms, with a special shout-out to the kind of love that sometimes looks like a lot of rage.

“I Wanna F#%*ing Tear You Apart” was developed by and with the Brooklyn College MFA Writer’s Workshop, SPACE on Ryder Farm, and through the 2016 Beatrice Terry Award/ Drama League. In February 2017, the play ran at Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C. The production was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding New Play.

Directed by Melissa Foulger and co-produced by DC Allen and Ken Flick, I Wanna F#%*ing Tear You Apart stars Matthew Busch as Leo, Sofia Palmero as Samantha. Both actors are starring in the Atlanta production and will continue their run at Island City Stage. Joining the cast is Casey Sacco as Chloe who has appeared at Island City Stage in Summer Shorts and Zanna Don’t and designed the costumes for the current production of Rotterdam.

Matthew Busch will reprise his role of Leo from Atlanta’s Out Front Theatre production “I Wanna F#%*ing Tear You Apart”. The actor and director also appeared in the company’s productions of The Flower Room, The Thrush & The Woodpecker, and Equus. He has also appeared in Atlanta productions of Kiss of the Spiderwoman (Actor’s Express), Exit Strategy (Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre), Entertaining Lesbians, Tokens of Affection, The Credeaux Canvas, Other Desert Cities, The House of Yes (Out of Box Theatre), among others.

Also hailing from Atlanta to appear in the Island City Stage production is Sofía Palmero. Palmero’s credits include The Santa Closet (Out Front), Bull in a China Shop (Out Front Theatre), Fuddy Meers (Essence to Crux), Spirits to Enforce (Vernal & Sere), and Henry IV & V (Shakespeare on Draft). You may also catch a glimpse of them in Blumhouse’s queer horror film, “They/Them” on Peacock.

Melissa Foulger is the artistic director of DramaTech, Georgia Tech’s student run theatre. Foulger has directed throughout the Atlanta area at theatres such as 7 Stages, Actor’s Express, Theatre in the Square, Aurora Theatre, Theatrical Outfit, and Dad’s Garage. Her productions of Wolves, Suddenly Last Summer and Far Away have garnered top director nods from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Creative Loafing and The Sunday Paper. Wolves, Pluto, See What I Wanna See and Clybourne Park have won multiple Suzi Bass Awards. She was nominated for a Suzi Award for Best Director for Wolves at Actor’s Express. She has guest lectured on topics such as “Improvisation and Technology,” “Theatre as a Form of Game,” and “Ritual and Play” and is a member of the Digital Performance Initiative, which researches the intersection of performance with the latest technology.

Creating quality professional theatrical experiences focused on the LGBT+ community for a universal audience, Island City Stage’s 11th South Florida season tackles thought-provoking productions that explore poignant longing, gender questions, loneliness, the ins and outs of friendship and the magic of random human connection. Upcoming shows include Tracy Jones by Stephen Kaplan from May 18 – June 18 and a season closer (to be announced) from August 3 – September 3.
