In the chaotic decade following the Civil War, a group of young ex-slaves in Nashville, Tennessee, set out on a mission to save their financially troubled school by giving concerts. Traveling first through cities in the North, then on to venues across Europe, the Jubilee Singers introduced audiences to the power of spirituals—religious anthems of slavery. Driven to physical collapse and even death, the singers proved more successful —and more inspirational—than anyone could have imagined. Today, performing nationally at venues like the Apollo Theater, this a cappella group stands on the shoulders of the original Jubilee Singers, continuing their legacy of performing Negro spirituals.

International Mango Festival at Fairchild

Every July we eagerly anticipate the arrival of the International Mango Festival  at Fairchild Tropical Gardens.  Such a treat the King Mango is, that  despite the rain droves of  people showed up at this venue this past Sunday, July 14th, 2013 .  Mango Tree owners, mango connoisseurs and aficionados like my friend and I, were in for a very refreshing afternoon.

Mango-Festival-2013-064
Great photobomb, guy.

Mangoes from  several countries such as Thailand, Mexico,  India and Florida  to name a few  in representation, were available for tastings, cooking demonstrations,  and to take home and sinfully enjoy.  I had a lot of fun reading the many names of the Mangoes in display. Check out the attached pictures to see what I mean.  There were so many varieties, they need to give them people’s names.  Now you will understand when you hear someone saying , “Pass me a Tommy, will ya?” they’re actually referring to a mango.

I learned the Mango” is native to India, where apart from being a highly consumed  product, it represents a symbol of love and  given as a token of friendship. Another fun fact I found endearing is the legend that  Buddha sat under a mango tree  to  meditate, giving this fruit an air of enlightenment. For this same reason, it was an  inspiration in clothes and ornamentals. Did you know the famous paisley design was based on the mango? There is so much meaning behind this  deliciousness!

Mango-Festival-2013-072

“The Mango Doctors “ were there in situ,  to offer helpful tips and knowledge to the lines of people that took their home-grown mangoes, leaves, and if not, a couple of questions in mind to better understand this fruit’s care and growing process.  In a nutshell, I felt very zen – mind, body and heart aligned to the rhythm of the “mango.”

Mango-Festival-2013-025

What better way to show love to your community than attending, enjoying , and learning in an environment  such as Fairchild Tropical Gardens?  They have an amazing roster of events going on, so there is a niche for every taste.  If you go to  any upcoming shenanigans in the near future, remember there are tons of different things to see, so plan accordingly That’s how I met the Rambutan in a Mango Festival……

Here are the delicious Rambutans!

Come and learn about the new Public Space Challenge and how it is a part of the Our Miami initiative, which is shaping Miami’s future by working to retain young talent in Miami.

RSVP by July 30 at miamifoundation.org/ourmiamirsvp and receive a complimentary cocktail and entry.

The Miami Foundation will host up-and-coming young talent, local change-agents and engaged Miamians at their kickoff event for two new projects: the Public Space Challenge and a talent retention project. The reception will take place on Wednesday, July 31, 6 – 8 p.m. at The Stage Miami, located in the heart of the Design District at 170 NE 38th Street Miami, FL 33137. Entry is complimentary with RSVP and open to the public. Attendees may RSVP at miamifoundation.org/ourmiamirsvp and connect with other attendees on Facebook.

Both programs are part of the Foundation’s Our Miami initiative, which fosters community by building attachment to the city, developing public spaces and retaining young talent in Miami.

“Our Miami uses research from our Soul of the Community Study that clearly shows attracting and retaining young, talented and creative people in Greater Miami will grow the economy faster than other more traditional measures of economic development,” said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. “The initiative’s programs are excellent opportunities for anyone who is passionate about building a greater Miami and want to get involved in making it happen.”

The Miami Foundation developed a county-wide challenge to uncover the best ideas for creating and improving local public spaces: parks, libraries, public buildings, markets, plazas, playgrounds or any place where people can convene and connect. Ideas can be submitted from anyone, including individuals, groups, for-profit companies and nonprofit organizations. Community experts and professional placemakers will identify the top ideas; The Miami Foundation will invest $100,000 to make the ideas become reality.

In addition to the Public Space Challenge, the foundation will also launch a talent retention project and Web survey. The online tool measures an individual’s “attachment” to Greater Miami and provides the participant suggestions about how to become more engaged where they live. Results will be made available to community stakeholders to help guide talent retention efforts. The tool is based on research from a Georgetown University study and has been instrumental in reducing year-over-year employee turnover at Fortune 50 companies.

“Miami has the eighth-highest percentage of college students per capita in the U.S. and one of the highest flight rates of those students once they graduate,” continued Soto. “It is incumbent on us to develop, attract and retain the best and brightest here in Miami – our future depends on it.”

ourmiamibannerAbout The Miami Foundation: Established in 1967, The Miami Foundation has helped hundreds of people create powerful legacies by establishing custom, charitable Funds. More than $150 million in grants and scholarships has been awarded in the Foundation’s history. Today, the Foundation stewards more than $160 million in charitable assets. Through its Our Miami initiative, the Foundation positions Miami as a premier place for young talent to live, work, connect and engage. As much a part of summer as baseball and watermelon is MANO’s new exhibit “Summer Crush”, poking at the inner child in all of us reminding us that it’s not just that extra hour of daylight that makes summer so great.

The exhibit integrates many of the elements and mediums that the artist has engaged with over the last several years. In Summer Crush, MANO’s beach-goers evoke a sense of nostalgia and memories of more innocent times when White Castle burgers, hot mustangs, and cruising the board walk were the essentials for a perfect summer or was it a summer crush that made everything seem perfect. it’s also the memory of White Castle burgers, hot mustangs, cruising the board walk or maybe it was a summer crush that made everything seem perfect.

Mark Iacono / Lucali

Located in the hip new South Beach neighborhood, Sunset Harbor, the Brooklyn import Lucali is serving up delicious, classic, paper-thin-crust pizzas that have quickly gained a cult following throughout the city.

Sitting down with owner Marc Iacono, Chat Chow TV learned the some of the secrets to his famous pies, why he started in the pizza making business, and some of the challenges he faced bringing the popular restaurant to South Florida.

“Everybody was talking the water, the water, the water, and you know, I’ve had some good pizzas down here,” says Iacono, addressing some of the hesitations he faced. “I was like it’s not the water, it’s the humidity, so we just had to make a few adjustments to the dough.”

Unlike many traditional pizzerias, the pizza at Lucali is made by candlelight, with the dough rolled out by empty wine bottles, and cooked one at a time in a wood-burning oven. The extra-large pies are hailed for their simplicity, using only the best ingredients such as imported Italian cheeses and a tomato sauce worthy of writing home about.

While Iacono wouldn’t divulge his famous pizza sauce recipe, he did share one tip – cooking the sauce, which gives it a different flavor profile than its raw counterparts seen at most establishments.

Pizzas aren’t the only thing that you can find on the Lucali menu. One hidden gem guests can enjoy is the calzone, filled with five different cheeses and served with mounds of fresh basil and a large bowl of his pizza sauce for dipping.

Curious what inspired Iacono to get into the pizza making business? Hint: it has to do with English muffins. Or wonder what his favorite pizza toppings are? Find out all that in more in the video above.

This year’s Crush Games will gather over 1,020 of the nation’s top athletes in a three-day-long battle, testing their physical and mental toughness. A growing phenomenon, CrossFit has seen an enormous increase throughout the world, but specifically in South Florida, with athletes who are anxious and ready to take their strength and endurance to the next level. CrossFit enthusiasts travel across the nation stemming from the West Coast of California to Texas & Georgia, to compete against elite athletes.

“This year’s Crush Games is primed to be the biggest event to hit South Florida’s fitness community. Now in its third year, the Crush Games have tripled in size, bringing our athletes a diverse competition, with challenging events meant to test their mental and physical capabilities,” said Mike Osuna, Crush Games founder, and owner of the I am Crossfit Family, which includes five CrossFit locations throughout South Florida including I Am Crossit in Doral, CrossFit South Miami, Coconut Grove CrossFit, CrossFit Vida Brickell and CrossFit Gables.

A neighborhood is defined by the community within it, so, for one afternoon we will be inviting our neighbors to live it, love it, and eat in it. Neighborfood is a celebration of food, family, and the community we live in. We all share and love this community, so, it is only right we will be giving a portion of the proceeds to various local non-profit organizations.

Each restaurant in a neighborhood equally adds to the uniqueness and diversity of a community, which is why we are celebrating them all. On Saturday, July 27, neighbors will explore their neighborhood by sampling signature specialties at 8 different restaurants, all within walking distance.

“We started Neighborfood to rejoice and share in the things we love most: food, family, and our neighborhood,” says Dishcrawl Founder, Tracy Lee.

From 2pm-6pm, neighbors will join for an afternoon of exploration. Tickets include admission and one food ticket to dine at a participating restaurant and may be purchased on the Dishcrawl website. Additional food tickets are available so attendees can try as many restaurants as they would like. Drink specials will also be offered at various locations. The much loved all-girl pop pioneers The Go-Go’s will bring beauty, the beat and beyond to the Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, September 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale on Sunday, July 28.

From their halcyon days as America’s sweethearts to their current status as superstars who pioneered a genre, The Go-Go’s have enjoyed an amazing three-decade reign as high pop priestesses. The internationally-loved hitmakers helped cement the foundation of the early ‘80s pop-rock sound without the aid of outside composers, session players or, most importantly, creative compromise. From their very first show, the group sang and played their own songs, offering five feisty role models for a generation of ready-to-rock girls and good, hooky fun for pop-loving guys.

For The Go-Go’s, their story truly is a punk version of the American Dream. The Go-Go’s debuted in May of 1978, a time when there were other all-female bands, but ones orchestrated by men such as Phil Spector, Kim Fowley or Sonny Bono. The band was conceived in the very same gritty glitter of the rough Los Angeles scene that also birthed X, The Germs, and The Weirdos. By ’79, the Go-Go’s were beating their path to stardom on their own terms. They played every cool club and party in Los Angeles and released an early version of “We Got the Beat” through the quirky Stiff Records in the UK.

By 1981, the band was signed to upstart new wave haven IRS records with Beauty and The Beat, and the infectious debut U.S. single, “Our Lips Are Sealed,” was released. The double-platinum Beauty and The Beat reached #1 and was followed-up by Vacation in ‘82 and Talk Show in ’84. During those years, hits like “Vacation,” “Head Over Heels” and “Turn to You” dominated the airwaves and, today, continue to live on in countless compilations, movie soundtracks, remakes and television commercials.

Guest Chef Brings Regional Colombian Cuisine to Miami

Colombian chef, Rafael Suarez, arrived to Miami from Bogota, Colombia to present some of his favorite dishes during his one week official and exclusive visit as guest chef at the InterContinental’s Armillary Grill Restaurant, where he will prepare delectable specialties from various regions of Colombia.

The event will take place during the week of July 15th and finalize with a decadent Sunday brunch on July 21st in honor of Colombia’s Independence Day celebration.

Chef Suarez has over 13 years of experience in the hospitality industry and is currently the Executive Chef at JW Marriott in Bogota, Colombia.

Soul of Miami scooped up an interview with the gastronomical expert to learn more about his scrumptious creations.

The interview is in its original language below.

2013 – (Doral, Florida) – Interview:

Chef Rafael Suarez, it’s a pleasure meeting you. Tell us a little bit about the menu and some of the dishes we can expect to find during the event, which will be offered as a buffet during the week, a dinner on Saturday and a brunch on Sunday.

The menu is typical, encompassing the vast majority of dishes throughout Colombia. It will be served as a buffet every night, Saturday will be a set menu served with the same concept of touring much of the cuisine throughout Colombia, and for brunch, a typical breakfast serving bread soup, beans, broth and Colombian-style stew.

What inspired you to create this menu specifically?

The wide range of products from Colombia, and the fact that many Colombians live in Miami, which is the reason why the cuisine is known but not varied.

What Colombian traditions are incorporated in the menu?

Pork from Tolima, Stew from Huila, Stew from the coast, fish from Tumaco and other homemade-style dishes.

What impression do you wish to leave on those who will be trying your creations? And what do you expect your guests to learn about your customs and Colombian regional cuisine?

I want them to be gastronomically satisfied, leaving the restaurant happy and filled with memories and new flavors. They can learn to combine the products that are available in the local Miami markets in their everyday cooking, as everything that I am using is from here, I have not brought anything from Colombia.

I know you use a healthy approach and typical fresh ingredients from various regions of Colombia, and I know, too, that you specialize in kosher food. Is there any reason why kosher food has caught your attention?

The freshness of fruits and vegetables led me to investigate the subject of kosher cooking mainly for the great deal of demand there is for kosher meals. Additionally, the market is growing in Colombia and very few options are offered to patrons, even though oftentimes they look for typical dishes from their regions, at JW Marriott in Bogota we have been able to achieve a great deal of satisfaction from our guests with our Colombian cuisine where we combine flavors that have allowed us to be leaders in the market already for two years.

Have you been able to incorporate, in some way, the concept kosher food into some of the dishes of your recent culinary creation?

Yes, the secret is in the care and love that is placed into preparing the dishes, one speaks of kosher and some may see it as something terrible, Rabbi Kitchen Cleaning Supervisor!! But knowing and applying all this in real life is simple. It has a lot to do with care, food hygiene and health.

Having worked for large international hotel chains, do you think that this may have influenced you to create new and exciting culinary combinations with flavors and ingredients from other countries?

One always worries about having a special international menu, but when I travel I do not want to eat what I eat every day. I want to try new flavors so I ventured to create dishes where the flavor is branded COLOMBIA, but where the presentation and components are of the highest standard, with rich flavor, color and, above all, healthy. In Colombia we really like fatty meals but that we are changing that.

Would you say that this has made you deviate, in a good way, from your Colombian traditions to create a more extensive menu?

It’s not so much that I deviate, is more about changing service concepts without changing the history of a dish, i.e. I cannot make an egg arepa with corn flour and cooked quail egg, I do it with corn flour, whole egg but I incorporate shrimp, fish, turkey, chicken to make it lighter but just as rich.

Thank you very much again for your time. It’s a pleasure to meet you.

Labor Days DVD Release Showcase

By Ari Kane

The stars of the award-winning web series “Labor Days” performed in a special comedy showcase celebrating the “Labor Days – Season One” DVD release.  “Labor Days” features some of South Florida’s funniest comedians and we saw them live at the Miami Improv for a special ONE NIGHT ONLY comedy showcase! We will highlight some of our favorite performers.

Lisa Corrao joked about how she recently moved back in to her parents house and now envies the homeless for their dignity. She also compared her vagina to a boat because some people are only friends with her because she has one and it requires thousands of dollars of maintenance and is only used like once a month.

Kirk Meadows who sounds like Mike Tyson’s adorable gay cousin, killed it too. He joked about how he calls his daughter “Misty” because she was a mistake and his daughter calls him “Pop” because that is what happened to the condom. He also joked about how McDonald’s gives their employees one premium parking spot to share but, on a McDonald’s salary, nobody can afford a car.

Lando Leyba was also superb telling a hilarious story about being pulled over by a bicycle cop and was afraid that if he got arrested he would have to ride the handle bars into the station. He also discussed how he got a BJ coupon from his wife for his birthday and how some fools wait, but he cashed that shit in right away.

Our friend, Forrest Shaw was poignantly funny (as usual) discussing how it would be great if the TV shows “Intervention” and “Hoarders” were combined so a crack head would move into a hoarder’s place and clean that travesty of a mess out in a couple weeks. Lets put our resourceful Crackheads to good use.

The show was a riotous laugh and we can’t wait to see all of these guys (and Lisa) again. Good Luck in La-La-Land Forrest.  Just remember, no matter what the casting guy tells you, you do not have to toss salad to land a gig.

Local Artist Profiles: Paul Urdahl

Abstract Show

Artist Paul Urdahl

Get to know local artist Paul Urdahl: An artist with endless possibilities!

By: Tatiana Enriquez

“The Great Perhaps” were the last words of the poet Francois Rabelais, and author John Green brought these words back into our vocabulary in his novel Looking for Alaska. It’s a great phrase because it reminds us that there is adventure yet to be had, and that there is beauty and excitement in not knowing exactly what’s going to happen all of the time. In discovering the work of local artist Paul Urdahl, I was reminded of these words and learned that it’s a philosophy he shares as well. When creating his abstract, vivid and  colorful pieces, he prefers the unpredictability of pouring vs. the more controlled brush method because he feels it’s important to “embrace the unexpected things in life and go with the flow”. The result is the  limitless possibilities and freedom expressed in his pieces.

More about Paul Urdahl:

Paul Stephen Urdahl resides in Surfside, Fl.  He studied Interior Design and has worked for over two decades as a Lighting Designer.  Painting has always been a passion of his and is another outlet for him to release his creative energy. His style has evolved from structured to geometric to more free-flowing and organic. His paintings are based on the four classic elements; Fire, Air, Water, and Earth. He uses bold and  dynamic colors such as reds and oranges,  muted smoky tones, soothing and calming colors, and warm comforting tones.

Paul says that his inspiration comes from “…many different things. I love the amazing colors, shapes, and textures found in nature and that is my main inspiration.” He observes that “…the Miami art scene seems to be growing at a very rapid pace.” He believes this is in “…part due to the international recognition we receive from Art Basel. [We also have] the Second Saturday Art Walk in Wynwood. It brings out an eclectic mix of people enjoying art, music, and food from the popular food trucks…First Friday Art Walk in Downtown Miami is also very exciting. The new art museum downtown is also going to draw a lot of international art lovers to Miami.” Paul feels that we can help the Miami art scene continue to grow by “promoting Miami’s art scene via media and social media”. When asked what words of advice he would give new artists, Paul says “Be patient and get your art out there to be seen. A very easy way to show your art is via social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter. It’s a great no-cost way to be seen by thousands of people. Also, contact restaurants, salons, offices and offer to hang your work on consignment. They get art with no investment and you get to show your art to the world. [Last, but not least] participate in local art shows.”

So what’s next for Paul Urdahl, what can we expect to see?  Paul enthuses, “I’m planning on creating some functional art which combines LED lighting and sculpture.  Like my Elements Etc. page on Facebook to see all my latest creations and find out about my upcoming shows!”

Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum Launch

Mount Gay Rum had a party at the Ritz Carlton in Key Biscayne two nights ago. I was in attendance with one of my friends and bumped into a few notable names. Let’s start with my bosses from Soul of Miami, James and Annette. James only wanted to know if I could be backup with the pics since his camera is on the fritz. I’ve got you covered, James!

No rum event is complete without an appearance by Rob Burr, and this was no exception. Rob let us know that this new Black Barrel Rum was a return to fine Barbados rum from a distiller that has a long history doing just that.  Oh, and the rum was really good too.

Hope you like my photos! I love you guys!

Wynwood Art Group (#WWAG) is the result of the recent merger of Brazilian artists, headed by Hamilton Aguiar, with Gallery 212 Miami and Miami (art) Publicist. Gallery 212 Miami’s NY-native Pop Artist Michael Perez is partnered with Miami Publicist Caitlin E. Slayback and they have spearheaded an innovative program to provide a platform for emerging, mid-career and professional artists by managing monthly exhibitions that feature fine art, photography, design, sculpture and even live performance.  With a unique gallery business plan, Wynwood Art Group is essentially the result of this merger; a group of fine artists with great achievement in their careers forming a group to share ideas and to work with strategic marketing to create supportive platforms for artists.  Wynwood Art Group embodies the dedicated interest of its members in contributing to the formation and the history that will eventually be remembered by the here-and-now crowd as the significant art and cultural movement of Wynwood.

The gallery has been in business for 4 years in this location and this year was awarded 4th place by the Local Top 10 at [Channel] 10 voter’s poll of top local businesses.  The building has been newly renovated and expanded into a multi-use space now encompassing the entire corner of NW 24th and NW 2nd Avenue in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood art gallery district.  The neighborhood is famous for its art walls, attracting visitors from around the world who come to view and photograph them.  The Wynwood Art Group building boasts a new and fantastic mural on NW 24th Street by Brazilian WWAG artist Rogério Fernandes.  In the last ten years the almost completely abandoned warehouse district of downtown Miami has developed and blossomed into an art hub and the authentic gallery district that attracts masses of enthusiastic art lovers to its monthly Second Saturday art walks and annual Art Basel Miami; satellite fair to Art Basel, Switzerland and the largest, most successful and longest-running international art fair in the United States.

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Deferred Archive Awards Grants and Commissions Exhibition Opening 8/28/13

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Deferred Archive Awards Grants & Commissions Exhibition Opening
August 28th
Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation
1018 North Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33136

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) is proud to announce Deferred Archive as this year’s Grants & Commissions Program exhibition. As it is customary, the winners are part of the annual exhibition dedicated to the program at the CIFO Art Space. This year’s exhibition will open to the public from August 28th to October 27th.

The tenth edition of CIFO’s Grants & Commissions Program features newly commissioned works by Jorge Mendez Blake (Mexico), Milena Bonilla (Colombia), Miguel Calderon (Mexico), Antonio Caro (Colombia), Benvenuto Chavajay (Guatemala), José Gabriel Fernandez (Venezuela), Sofia Olascoaga (Mexico), Manuela Ribadeneira (Ecuador), Laureana Toledo (Mexico) and Santiago Villanueva (Argentina).

Deferred Archive refers to the idea that memory is constructed retrospectively – not from past to future, but from future to past, so that the events that we experience are not fixed in time, but fleeting from one subject to the other.

In Hal Foster’s Return of the Real, he looks to Freudian theory of deferred action to recover psychoanalysis as a model to understand how we construct the history of avant-garde art. According to Foster, Freud’s theory of deferred action is seen as an event that is recorded as traumatic when a subsequent event retroactively recodes it. Foster, in turn, proposes that the significance of the events of the avant-garde occurs in a similar way by a complex alternation of anticipation and reconstruction. Thus we see what happens when artists work with the idea of the archive. The archive becomes a distinct model in understanding how memory is constructed.

The idea of the deferred archive represents the artist looking back, activating past events and classifying them in order to understand a particular moment, as if revisiting the event with the perspective of today gives it the opportunity to really exist; a type of documentation that allows for memory to be created within the now – or, memory according to a later experience. The artist uses this model as a way of recognizing that memory is always something in the making. By looking to the past, the artists participating in CIFO’s 2013 Grants & Commissions Program are not searching for a memory, but rather creating a memory through documentation/archiving. The act of post-event documentation (or belated documentation) therefore becomes the deferred archive.

“CIFO remains committed to maintaining investment and supporting contemporary artists from Latin America,” said CIFO Founder Ella Fontanals-Cisneros. “In the tenth edition of the Grants & Commissions Program, we are very proud to honor this year’s award recipients who are creating some of the most challenging and innovative work today. These awards serve as a testament to the artists’ skill, creativity and vision.”

CIFO’s Grants & Commissions Program offers opportunities to up to six emerging and three mid- career contemporary artists from Latin America as well as an annual Achievement award, recognizing the contributions of established artists who would benefit from significant international exposure and recognition. The funds awarded in the Grants and Commissions program are given directly to the selected artists in order to develop their pieces, providing more flexibility for the artist. The artists are nominated each year by CIFO’s Honorary Advisory Committee of leading art professionals, curators and artists from Latin America, the United States, and Europe. After a rigorous review process, the recipients are chosen by the Selection Committee and ratified by CIFO’s Board of Directors. Having already benefitted over a hundred artists during its ten years, the Program has been known to springboard recipients into the next level of their careers.

This year, CIFO has partnered with Cannonball, an Artist Residency based in Downtown Miami, to award one of the artists in the Grants & Commissions Program with a two month residency. CIFO’s Board of Directors selected Benvenuto Chavajay from Guatemala for the residency where he will spend the months leading up to the exhibition focusing on creating his project.

Less than a year after breaking into the Miami and South Florida marketplace, Duvel’s lighter, draft-only golden ale – Duvel Single, will be the feature beer at this month’s Wynwood Art Walk Beer Garden! The event is part of a new art walk series featuring complimentary Duvel Single and Sparky’s Roadside Barbeque at Gramps Bar. Please RSVP to rsvp@workshopcollective.com.

Duvel Single is the lighter golden ale from Duvel. The secret behind the crisp and complex flavors of Duvel Single is Duvel’s commitment to using only the best quality ingredients, and in the complicated and specific brewing and refermentation process that takes more than three months to complete. Once brewed, the brew master and his staff taste each batch after approximately 30 days. At this stage the beer is called “single-fermented.” The beer has Duvel taste but the alcohol and carbonation are lower and the taste is lighter and crisper.

Duvel Strong Golden Ale is the signature beer of Duvel Moortgat – fourth-generation Belgian brewers. Duvel Moortgat USA, Ltd. imports Duvel Golden Ale, Maredsous Abbey Ales, Chouffe Ales, Liefmans, and DeKoninck Ales and also sells the beers of Brewery Ommegang, Cooperstown NY. Coming to a stage near you! ARTfusion, Delray Inc. is proud to announce the launching of its innovative and interactive program, Theatrical Fusion. Youa re invited to this special kickoff event and reception. Join us for complimentary Wine & Hors d’oeuvres and get to know ARTFusion!

Theatrical Fusion implements improvisational theater techniques to engage audiences and maintain interaction. The program uses the arts as a vehicle for community building, education and social change. Its goal is to provide “edutainment” and help members of the community make choices that will positively impact their lives. Funding for this nonprofit program was made possible through the Love One Another Foundation represented by Cousin’s Law of West Palm Beach.

Twelve performances are now being scheduled ranging from Summer 2013 to Spring 2014, in which participating organizations will have the opportunity to promote their causes. “We bring our actors and plays for free or for a small donation to host sites” Kamysha Martin, Executive Director of ARTfusion Delray, said. “The stage serves a platform for interaction. Each play allows the audience members to be a part of the host’s organization message and/or chime in on the topic”. Organizations are being urged to call and reserve a date as soon as possible for Theatrical Fusion booking. “We are very pleased with the reception of this program, but yes, there are still a handful of more opportunities left on the schedule”, says Ms. Martin.

In partnership with the Global Business Development Center, the program is purposely designed to create jobs by hiring local actors, create social change by discussing serious topics, and assist community partners through community outreach. “We are doing a second round actors call, requesting submission and in person auditions are being scheduled,” Martin said. The program also brings in subject matter experts to facilitate discussion on topics including bullying, cyber stalking, domestic violence, teen dating violence, financial education, substance abuse, teen pregnancy prevention, healthy choices, HIV/AIDS, parenting and topics specific to the aging community and their families.

ARTfusion Delray’s mission is to utilize the ARTS for social change.

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) is proud to announce Deferred Archive as this year’s Grants & Commissions Program exhibit. As it is customary, the winners are part the annual exhibition dedicated to the Program at the CIFO Art Space. This year’s exhibit will open on August 28th.

Deferred Archive refers to the idea that memory is constructed retrospectively – not from past to future, but from future to past, so that events that we experience are not fixed in time, but fleeting from one subject to the other.

The archive is a distinct model in understanding how memory is constructed.

By looking to the past, the artists participating in CIFO’s 2013 Grants & Commissions Program are not looking for a memory, but rather creating a memory through documentation/archiving. The act of post-event documentation (or belated documentation) therefore becomes the deferred archive.

Spinello Projects Presents a Solo Project by Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares Grand Opening 7/13/13

Spinello Projects Presents a Solo Project  by Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares Grand Opening
spinelloSaturday, July 13th, 7 – 10 PM
Spinello Projects
2930 NW 7th Avenue
Miami, FL 33127.

Spinello Projects is pleased to present the grand opening of State of the Book, an interactive installation from multidisciplinary artists Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares. Wright and Millares transform the gallery entrance into the façade of a bookstore storefront. Behind the glass doors is an interactive reading room where visitors may sit, read and physically engage with books borrowed from the Miami-Dade Public Library System, private collections and the artists’ own bookshelves. The Florida heat in the summer becomes a New England winter – an invitation to retreat indoors to think.

The work considers the devaluation of the printed book in a society plagued by rising budget cuts to the arts and education, successive shutdowns of mom-and-pop bookstores and public libraries, and the rise of the e-book. It is the artists’ hope that the room will generate a dialogue around the changing role of books in contemporary culture, but also furthering a love of reading centered around and within the act of community-building. In addition to regular gallery hours, ongoing programming will activate the space for the duration of the exhibition. Wright and Millares will conclude the exhibition run with a live performance.

The sad, strange, beautiful vulnerability and (sometimes) painful faces of the human condition are all considerations in the oeuvre of Miami-based artists Antonia Wright and longtime collaborator Ruben Millares. Investigating the various politics and comic facets of natural behaviors both unique and routine, Wright and Millares examine these elements through a multifarious, process-oriented practice combining video, performance, photography, poetry, sound and sculpture. Wright and Millares acknowledge the layers of societal taboos and barriers between their artistic choices, and pointedly pushes them into the visual arts realm for the viewer to regard, question and/or enjoy.

Photographs of Florida Supercon on 7/5/13

Florida Supercon on Friday, July 5, 2013.  Wow this show just keeps growing and growing and getting better each year.  There were so many people in great costume, it just adds to the over all experience.  I just love watching the Florida Super Championship Wrestling, so much fun seeing different characters in the wrestling ring from Power Rangers to the Joker, so fun.  The Cupcake Burlesque show was awesome as always, these girls always do a fabulous show and this one was comic themed.

Hello, this is Francisco Perez aka Pac23 and I’m a local artist/illustrator.

I’m reaching out to you guys to see if you would like to make a post of my solo art show at the moment going on at Kidrobot at the beach. It’s called “On The Grind” and it runs until the end of August. I’m not sure if you guys make posts for this kind of stuff, but it doesn’t hurt trying.

The flyer for the show is attached.

Here are links to pics of the opening reception and gallery space – http://www.behance.net/gallery/On-The-Grind-A-Pac23-Art-Show/9735413 & https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.530248207022669.1073741826.240014309379395&type=3

I am also releasing a collectible resin sculpture in the same realm of designer vinyl toys in collaboration with Deep Blue Realm.

Here’s a link with pics of the figure – http://www.behance.net/gallery/Bob-Omb-Resin-Figures/9734913 and here’s a bit more info on it –

This is Pac23, artist from Kidrobot Dunny series 2012. Deep Blue Realm and I are collaborating on our first limited run of this 7 inch resin Bob-Omb. Sculpted and tooled by Deep Blue Realm, and hand painted by me. We’ll be doing runs of 6 per color way and each piece will be one of kind as each will be hand painted and hand tooled by us. We plan on releasing a few color ways following this release of the black Bob-Omb. Each will come individually numbered and in a hand crafted box along with a 6″x6″ print of the matching color way.

Release date will be September 2013.

Bob-Ombs will be $220 (national shipping included, international shipping please inquire).

The pink Bob-Omb (01 of 01) will be on sale at my “On The Grind” solo show (running from July through August) at the Kidrobot store in Miami.

For inquiries please contact us at buy.bobomb@gmail.com

Since it’s a limited release per color way it will be handled as a first come first served basis.

You can find me on www.pac23.com and DeepBluerealm on Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/Deepbluerealm

Thanks,

Thank you so much for your time!
