For those who prefer to hear the ivories tickled, The Flat is launching an intimate, live music experience every Wednesday featuring local guest musicians curated by renowned South Florida jazz vocalist Randy Singer.

Nestled in the South of Fifth Street neighborhood, the recently launched Parisian piano lounge has carved a nightlife niche for itself as the quintessential, intimate venue for apéritifs and digestifs compliments of an extensive artisanal cocktail menu served in a sophisticated yet cozy jewel box setting.

The event will also serve as the semi-annual Neiman Marcus Trend Event, featuring a fashion showcase of the latest styles for fall 2013. Shoppers will enjoy bubbly and bites with music by DJ Mike Cruz. Those who donate to the fashionable cause and make a Neiman Marcus purchase that night will receive a shopping incentive.

The main Fashionably Conscious three-day sale event from September 20-22 will allow hundreds of shoppers to score timeless designer pieces and vintage finds at unbeatable prices. All proceeds will be donated to Coconut Grove Cares’ The Barnyard Community Center and offer essential unrestricted funds to support the summer camp and after-school programs, providing a safe haven for hundreds of children in the West Grove community.

Celebrity Art Series (CAS), produced by sister company Square Circle Miami, is a week-long exhibition during Art Basel Miami Beach and Miami Art Week that displays and auctions original canvas art works created and donated by celebrities and renowned artists. Proceeds from the auction benefit Women’s International Film & Arts Festival Inc. and the Buster Mathis Foundation. The exhibition takes place at LMNT Gallery, located at 59 NW 36th St. in Miami’s Wynwood District, from Tuesday, December 3 – Sunday, December 8. The culmination of CAS features an Artist Reception and Silent Auction on Saturday, December 7, time and event details to follow.

In its second annual year, CAS expects participation from more than 50 “celebrity” and renowned artists who will present and showcase their creative talent by donating an original piece of art to CAS’s exhibition. The artists’ works will be displayed at the Artist Reception and Silent Auction.

The primary goal of SCM and CAS is to become a premiere multicultural showcase of modern and contemporary art works, including paintings, photography, mixed media and other artistic expressions, created by established and emerging ethnic artists.

The Pubbelly team’s popular Italian eatery, Macchialina Taverna Rustica, has joined forces with local craft brewer Gravity Brewlab to host their first-ever Craft Beer Happy Hour.

Offered in the bar area only, guests can walk up to a special carving station and order Chef/Owner Michael Pirolo’s sandwich of house-made, hand-carved porchetta with topping choices such as crispy potatoes, pepperonta, or broccolini, served on a fresh baguette, while sipping on Gravity Brewlab’s Saizonetta beer. Created just for Macchialina to pair the porchetta, the traditional Belgian farmhouse ale, offered along with the sandwich for $5, is brewed with the uncooked semolina grain from Macchialina.

The monumental first keg tapping will occur during the event by the brewmaster himself, Diego Ganoza, who will also be on-site to mingle, taste and answers questions with guests.

Local artist Daniel Fila, or Krave, known best for his mural “Erin,” a 13-foot posterior-view nude painted along Biscayne Boulevard in the Design District, will be on-site in front of Macchialina during the Happy Hour for a live art exhibition.

Macchialina’s regular Happy Hour specials – $5 house wines and cocktails, $1.50 oysters and a combo of Pirolo’s delightful margherita pizza with a pint of Peroni beer for $10 – as well as the a la carte and Miami Spice dinner menus, will also be offered during the Craft Beer Happy Hour. Macchialina’s rustic Italian fare has received a 3½-Star Excellent rating from The Miami Herald and an equally stellar review from The Miami New Times, as well as a great deal of other local and national attention.

Having noticed a void of innovative, top-quality, locally-crafted beer in Miami, Gravity Brewlab Owner Diego Ganoza, with the help of fellow brewers Robert Tejon and Seth Hammond, sought to fill this vacancy by designing a brewery that operated under the philosophy of creating beer that is 100% unique to Miami. Drawing inspiration for each custom-made draft from the individuality of the city, its diverse cuisines, and of course, the prolific local ingredients, Gravity Brewlab has infiltrated the Florida beer market through participation in festivals, pairings, happy hour events, and tap-takeovers at some of Miami’s most popular restaurants and bars, gaining growing notoriety and respect. Their most recent collaboration includes “Gin and Juice,” a gin barrel-aged double IPA with prestigious Tampa-based Cigar City Brewing. Gravity Brewlab has received many nods from the community including features in Miami New Times, Thrillist Miami, SouthFlorida.com, and nationally, Serious Eats: Serious Drinks. Head brewer Robert Tejon has also been listed in Miami New Times’ Top 15 Tastemakers.

Fragments and Passions
My Fragments are stimulated from the passion of one artist to another showing a wide range of influences, including sources from the Renaissance to contemporary artists. Many of these works were the pornography of my childhood, and still today I look at them with the same curiosity of that child abandoned in the library.
My process starts with a collage made with the use of a computer. Observing works of art on the computer gives me the possibility of walking into a piece and stop where it provokes and excites me. The ideal model has already been created and has eternal form. I use it and destroy it purely for aesthetic reasons, recovering and bringing it out from the darkness, releasing it from its Baroque frame and putting it into contemporary context.

South Florida firefighter hotties will be “Burning Up” for your love and community support at the 2014 edition unveiling of the South Florida Firefighters Calendar sponsored by One Beat CPR on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 8 p.m. at Center Fountain at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The public is invited to help celebrate their success raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities by purchasing the $20 calendars at Center Fountain, posing for photos with the men and receiving autographs. Each calendar purchase will support Here’s Help, A Safe Haven for Newborns and Friends Forever Rescue charities. Presale opens at 6 p.m.

The 2014 calendar will showcase 15 new red-hot men and three returning MVPs featured within a 13″ x 9″ glossy format. Additionally, a fresh approach to family support will be incorporated this year as two of the fiery philanthropists are proudly displayed alongside their children; one in June for Father’s Day and the other in December for the holiday season.

“The South Florida Firefighters Calendar organization is proud to celebrate 21 years of community commitment as we unveil the 2014 edition at Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood,” said Lt. Luis Espinosa, calendar creator and South Florida Firefighters Calendar president. “It is an honor to be one of the longest running firefighter calendars in the world!”

This edition’s “caliente” centerfolds who range from 18 to 45-years-old are Russell and Jonathan of the Hollywood Fire Rescue, Michael of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Kenny of the East Lake Fire Rescue, Jose R., Henry, Manuel, Hector, Robert, Peter, Erick and Andres of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Adam of the Miami Beach Fire Rescue and Jamal and Joseph of the City of Lauderhill Fire Rescue.

Additionally, this year’s calendar will feature previous editions MVPs David of the Hialeah Fire Rescue, and Paul and Jose M, also of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Founded in 1992 by firefighter and actor/model Luis Espinosa, the South Florida Firefighters Calendar is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization and has helped raise awareness about important community issues. REBECCA BARBA

Born and raised in South Florida, Rebecca Barba is a first generation Cuban-American.

Since the tender age of 3, Rebecca showed signs of creativity. Throughout her early education, she excelled in her art courses, receiving accolades in both school and community-sponsored art competitions. Rebecca earned a Minor in Visual Arts from Florida International University in 1995.

In 2007, she was fortunate to meet and be inspired by visual artist, Pablo Contrisciani, he helped un-lock her expressionistic style. As an artist, her style has evolved through the years, mastering mediums such as: pencil, charcoals, watercolors, pastels and acrylics. Her most recent creations are interpretations of moments in the artist’s life expressed in passionate energized brush strokes of captivating hues. These are appropriately called, “Art of Life By Rebecca B.” A collection of paintings derived from the experiences in the artist’s life; life is what inspires her!

FRED LOVE

A self-taught photographer, Fred Love works with some of Miami’s most successful modeling agencies, such as WILHELMINA, NEXT, FORD, MC2 and others, as well as some of fashion’s most established super models. Love is notorious for capturing iconic fashion images, and his photography has become an essential tool in helping fashion agents to develop and launch the careers of these models while building a portfolio that will market them in obtaining work from major clients from within the fashion industry.
Fred Love has been featured multiple times on Fashionone.com and his work can be seen in numerous magazines, and for luxury brands such as Legitimutt, ishine365 and in GLASSbook. He has been a resident artist at Artwalk in Wynwood, Miami for many years. A major focus in Fred’s career today is to continue to establish himself as a top fashion editorial photographer. When asked to describe what it is about photography that inspires him, Fred explained, “I love telling a story or conveying a feeling through my photographs. For me, it’s all about capturing the emotion and personality of the subject.”

JESSICA LOREN

Jessica is a music fan who portrays her love of music and sound through her art. Her painting are a mixed media process of acrylic on canvas, incorporating metal , glass and other textural components.

Jessica was born and raised in New York and currently resides in South Florida. Her work has been shown in galleries throughout South Florida as well as at art shows and fairs in Florida and New York.

Miguel Paredes was born in New York in 1966. He is an artist and urban realist who combines the exhilarating sense of New York graffiti art with the skill and perceptiveness of a truly exceptional artist.

Growing up on 72nd Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Paredes exuded early signs of artistic ability and accepted an invitation to New York City’s prestigious Fiorello La Guardia High School of Music and Art – immortalized in the musical and movie Fame – in the early 1980s. His studies at Fiorello coincided with the explosion of street culture in the city. Paredes drew inspiration from notorious pop artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring and plunged headlong into the world of graffiti and pop art taking the name “Mist” as his moniker.

Another influential figure in Paredes’ artistic career is his mentor, Ronnie Cutrone. Cutrone was Andy Warhol’s immediate assistant at the Factory during the notorious pop artist’s most productive and prestigious years. To Paredes, his mentor’s paintings are the essence of pop: colorful, lively and highly accessible. Cutrone’s constant use of bright and fluorescent colors not only influenced Warhol’s return to such hues, but shaped Paredes’ color palette choices as well. Paredes’ piece “Ronnie is that you?

Announcing Dressed for Success as the official charity of the 2013 Great Grove Bed Race. The board of directors and subcommittee created for just this event promises to outdo itself in bed decor and dress and takes their racing as seriously as fundraising for their cause. Fortunately, Dressed for Success can now “suit-up” for the bed race. Five years of heated racing during peak hurricane season has blown the race – permanently – to the first Sunday of November; a cooler and more appropriately ‘suited’ time of the year. The Event producers and the Grove Merchant Group are simultaneously announcing the date move to cool down the overheated racers for the years to come.

Homemade beds race down the streets of Coconut Grove. The origins of bed racing date back three decades with this being the fifth anniversary of the Great Grove Bed Race with its Fast-Signs-fast-track and professional speed-way style play-by-play and on-site live radio with Celebrity Grand Marshall each year.

Proceeds go to Dress for Success Worldwide is an international non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women located in more than 125 cities across 15 countries. They provide professional clothing, employment retention programs and ongoing support to their clients showing faith in every woman’s ability to be self-sufficient and successful in her career.

Announced today recording Artist and Rapper, Flo Rida, will get in bed with racers from across MIami Dade County as Grand Marshal for the “Great Grove Bed Race”. He joins celebrity judges, Mayor Thomas Regalado, local Miami Grammy winner Karina Iglesias of The Voice, and Commissioner Sarnoff for this year’s mattress madness. MC’s of the bed-to-bed race offs is KVJ morning show of 97.3 FM the Coast. The 2013 competition of racing homemade beds through the streets of Coconut Grove will benefit Dress for Success Miami.

Born and raised in Miami, Flo Rida released his first album in 2008 that featured hit songs such as “Low” featuring T-Pain and “Right Round” featuring Kesha. Both songs reached the top of the charts and held their position at number one for several weeks. His latest album “Perfect 10” will be released before the years end. Get ready to get down “Low” with our Grand Marshal!

“I love my fans, so when I get the chance to interact with them, it’s beautiful.” said Flo Rida, “growing up in South Florida, I’ve always known, before I had a record deal, that the thing is to go out and put on the show. I’ve been doing that from day one and so have these race producers. I can’t wait to be a part of the totally different kind of show.

The event will take place on Bayshore Drive by Peacock Park. Ingenuity has always been the key component of the races. Entries in recent years have depicted everything from a bed-ridden President Obama to last years top prizewinner a Victorian Themed bed by The Olfactory Company complete with white powder and wigs. Like any other 5k or tri-athalon for charity; the Bed Racers will fundraise beginning in August and throughout the fall season, with a 5-man race team and an additional 5-man pit crew, sending emails and encouraging attendees to sponsor and donate to their teams.

The Miami Downtown Development Authority (MiamiDDA) has extended the popular winter event, The Heineken DWNTWN Miami Concert Series presented by Car2Go year-round, with four FREE summer shows at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. Read To Learn Books For Free – Encouraging Reading In South Florida

Even though children are reading more than ever and two of the most successful genres in modern publishing are Young Adult and Children’s books, Miami-Dade image002County officials are considering the closing of some libraries. If the Mayor and Commissioners do not want to raise property taxes, then they are looking at closing some libraries as way so save money and raise revenue. In a “worst-case scenario,” the government is looking to close 22 libraries that include: California Club, Opa-locka, Golden Glades, Civic Center Kiosk, Lemon City, Little River, Model City, Culmer, North Shore, Shenandoah, South Shore, Fairlawn, Virrick Park, Country Walk, Concord, Sunset, Lakes of the Meadows, Tamiami, West Kendall Regional, Doral, Hialeah Gardens and Palm Springs North.
This is a problem. Nearly half of Miami-Dade County 3rd graders fail to read at the basic grade level. A new communitywide campaign aims to change that daunting reality. Children not reading well by 3rd grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school.

That is why many institutions in Miami-Dade County have launched initiatives to encourage reading in young children and their parents. The Children’s Trust and The Center for image003Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College are partnering to launch Read To Learn Books For Free to inspire a love for reading in communities where children have little access to books. This is part of a larger Read to Learn campaign with the goal of having all children in Miami-Dade County reading at or above grade level by third grade.

Read to Learn Books for Free will make books more accessible to children through strategically placed bookshelves filled with new and gently used age-appropriate books in highly visited locations – such as government agencies, low-income housing sites, and health clinics, just to name a few. Parents and children will be encouraged to take one book home from the shelves to read together. So far shelves have been placed at the Borinquen Medical Center Pediatric Unit, Cutler manor Apartments, Goulds Community Service Center, Joseph Caleb Community Service Center, KidsTown Pediatrics Legion Park Perrine Community Service Center, Wynwood Community Service Center, Miami Children’s Initiative Community Center, Jessie Trice Center for Community Center, North Miami Gardens Community Service Center, image004Catalyst Miami Open Door Health Center, Lotus House, Little Haiti Cultural Center, Glen Meadows Campbell Arms Apartment, Family Court Service.

Book drives will be held all year-round to keep shelves fully stocked at all times with the cooperation of corporate sponsors. The first 5,000 books were donated by Disney through First Book. Donations bins are located at the South Florida Business Journal, Sapient Corp, ZGS Digital, Bello Martinez & Ramirez PA, Toyota of Homestead and the ArtCenter South Florida.

Love, Hope, Strength invites you to a night of culinary oddities, exotic beasts, and enigmatic strangers. Grand Central was transformed into a market inspired soiree guaranteed to test your wits and tempt your senses. Sip on complimentary Dos Equis as live music and unexpected encounters transport you to the Bazaar Noir.

We received these cute little passport cards that we took with us to every station to have punched.  It wasn’t that easy though. You had to try one of the “culinary oddities” or perform some task in order to get your card punched. Once all four corners of the card were punched out, then you were invited to the special secret room to view a performance.  Slits in a wall revealed a mirrored room with a dancing phoenix that seemed to perform JUST for you, like a pervy peep show. It was difficult to describe, so you’ll have to see for yourself… or ask me sometime.

The event was such a blast. We really enjoyed the musical stylings of The Candy Shop Boys. They played an eclectic and provoctive mix of muic and genres. I especially love how they cover tunes in new and interesting ways.

We were are all about partying for a purpose.  That’s why we are happy to find out that Love Hope Strength was behind all the the peculiar partying. Love Hope Strength (LHS) an international, music-centric cancer charity dedicated to saving lives, one concert at a time. Their mission is to save lives, right now, with the advances that have already been made in cancer care.

So, how does one become a marrow or blood stem cell donor?

It is a painless and simple procedure to get registered.  You fill out a quick form, have your cheek swabbed. The cells are taken and sent to a lab to be tested to determine your tissue type.  Your data is then entered into the National Marrow Donor Program registry. No worries. It’s anonymous.

Viophilia announces the two night only group show “Can We Please Change Gears? – An Artist Cry for Transition.”

The group show features works by 40 striving local artists, who aim to make an impact on the local and international art conversation. Each artist differs in practice, however, all are up and coming Miami-based artists and present a glimpse into the future of the Miami art scene.

Artists like Atomik, Kazilla, Jeff Dekal, Kat King, Ivette Cabrera, Natalia Molina, Chris Valdes, Deming King Harriman and Buddha Funk will present a variety of work focusing on future, a new discourse on Miami and artistic transition. The exhibit features painting, installation, illustration, video, collage, graffiti and performances by Xela Zaid, Kendall Morgan and newSense from ArtOfficial, which will take place on the opening night only.

The works collectively explore the trajectory of Miami’s art scene while each piece individually represents a very personal examination of future perspectives and career visions by each artist.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, nurtured and grown under the direction of Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev since October of 1997, leaps into its 16th Season starting October 12th, 2013 with Pentimento, and Firebird and ends with their Spring Gala on May 3rd and 4th, 2014. South Florida ballet fans will be treated to a season of mixed styles that will include new works, old works, giant mice, steamy romance, a few weighty collaborations, and a veterinarian in Africa, all presented by Arts Ballet Theatre’s professional corps of 14 dancers!

Pentimento, created by choreographer Vicente Nebrada, includes excerpts from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Four Suites for Orchestra. The ballet is a bold, abstract work that is based on the art form of painting called pentimento. The artist changes his or her mind about the composition of his painting during the process of painting, and then changes it. This ballet applies the same approach to dance: the concept for the dances and costumes change throughout the performance. Using masks, flowing fabric and creative lighting to create a mystical effect, the piece develops through layers of movement, color and light. Adding to mystical effects is original costuming by Cristina Gianinni.

Back by popular demand, the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents Firebird, with Stravinsky’s brilliant score that tells the tale of a magical firebird who helps a heroic prince rescue a beautiful princess. With exuberant dancing, magical special effects, fantastic costumes designed by Jorge Gallardo, new sets by Jim Hammond, and gorgeous backdrops by designer Elena Bondarenko, this magnificent production will enthrall and enchant audiences.

In December, Beginning with a Gala Event on Sunday December 8th at 7:00 pm, the company of the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will once again journey to the Land of the Sweets, as they perform the traditional annual audience favorite, The Nutcracker. This holiday ‘chestnut’ depicts the tale of a young girl, Clara, on Christmas Eve and the adventure she undertakes when her most cherished Christmas present, a nutcracker, comes to life. Together they battle the Mouse King, travel to the Land of Sweets, enjoy festivities with delicious international treats, and finally travel home.

In March, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will bring back the family favorite Doctor Ouch! Those two words may instill fear in your kids, but actually, they should induce great big smiles – Dr. Ouch is a wonderfully hilarious ballet designed with kids in mind (and what a fun way to sneak a little extra culture into their lives)!

Doctor Ouch! is based on the books by Russian poet, Kornei Chukovsky, and tells the story of a doctor that cures animals. When he’s called to the wilds of Africa to help ill monkeys, he encounters tropical birds, amazing animals and some very mischievous pirates. And the entire story is told in two acts of breathtaking ballet. It’s magical!

With beautiful costumes and fantastical sets, this wonderful production will delight everyone ages 2 to 92.

To raise money and awareness for Miami Children’s Initiative, a nonprofit improving Liberty City by investing in every child, hundreds of South Floridians will go “Over the Edge” and rappel 19 stories down the JW Marriott Marquis Miami. Participants will include community, civic and business leaders, elected officials, celebrities, philanthropists, and members of the general public. Plus, a lucky couple from the accompanying “Wed Over the Edge” contest will exchange vows before rappelling.

This acclaimed film traces the arc of the famed photographer’s life, her aspirations to artistry and the trajectory of her career. Directed by her sister, Barbara Leibovitz, this probing and personal film depicts the key phases that shaped Annie’s life and work. Her story includes her childhood, the tumultuous 1960’s, her transition from Rolling Stone to Vanity Fair, as well as her most significant personal relationships, especially motherhood. At its center are bountiful, insightful and even playful interviews with her most famous subjects, mentors, and colleagues who reveal the evolution of one of the world’s most influential visual artists.

Mucha gente quiere escribir una novela. Tiene una historia, tiene personajes, tiene un argumento. Pero, ¿sabemos cuáles son los recursos a los que apela un escritor a la hora de empezar a escribir y darle forma a historia, personaje y argumento y sobre todo, cómo se elabora una estrategia narrativa? En esta charla-taller, destinada a quienes quieren conocer cómo se prepara, diseña y escribe una novela, abordaremos las principales líneas de tensión que cruzan el desarrollo de la misma, independientemente de su género o extensión. Writing with or for someone else requires what novelist Colum McCann calls “radical empathy,” not just editorial and/or writing skill. In this three-day workshop participants will pair off and exchange stories. So bring a tape recorder and a computer or tablet — anything with a keyboard that will enable you to interview your cohort and then present your version of the story that best defines him or her. We’ll look at some examples of successful commercial collaborations and also try exercises in perception and differing viewpoints – how do you “read” someone else, and then verbalize the results – to kick off the workshop. FIAT is launching a series of Urban Surf Parties starting with Beats After Sunset in Miami Beach. The Urban Surf Party will feature a silent disco with beats by DJ Seamstar. Why do the words “Miami” and “crime” and “noir” sound so natural together? How would you define “noir,” and how is the Miami kind different from that found anywhere else? What’s so special about Miami, its history, setting, weather, and its salad of inhabitants and their conflicting traditions that has attracted so many crime writers? In this workshop, we’ll investigate these aspects of life in Miami and look at how you can use them to create your own noir crime fiction. We’ll read and discuss short examples by such writers as Charles Willeford, James W. Hall, Les Standiford, John Dufresne, Elmore Leonard, and others. GWAR (popularly thought to be an acronym for God What an Awful Racket, despite the band’s protests to the contrary) are thrash metal’s answer to the more mainstream satire of Spinal Tap. Gory, sexually perverse, and scatological in the extreme, GWAR claimed to consist of all-powerful interplanetary warriors, descended from aliens stranded in Antarctica and initially created from the lowest filth in the universe, who came to Earth to sexually enslave and/or slaughter the human race. The group quickly established a unique identity as the members performed in bizarre costumes made of latex and papier-mâché, while the stage show itself featured fake pagan rituals, corpses spewing washable bodily fluids on the audience, and sometimes a mechanical giant maggot. In this workshop, we will examine poems both from workshop participants and other poets that exemplify the use of place. We will also ask where is that place? Where is that physical place, that geographical place, and also where is that mental place? Is that place real, nostalgic, dreamt, etc.? Participants will bring to the workshop poems with these themes. Feedback will be given based on the Liz Lerhman method, which focuses feedback beginning from the artist place of inspiration and creative space, then from the reader’s/listener’s perspective—i.e. what the reader thought, felt, assimilated while reading the poem. Lastly, poets will be encouraged to appropriately render their poems out aloud—from their voice, their perspective, their place. Registration is now open. Join us for another look at “Summer Crush”, fresh and nostalgic and as much a part of summer as baseball and watermelon. MANO’s new exhibit “Summer Crush”, pokes at the inner child in all of us reminding us that it’s not just that extra hour of daylight that makes summer so great.

The exhibit integrates many of the elements and mediums that the artist has engaged with over the last several years. In “Summer Crush” , MANO’s beach-goers evoke a sense of nostalgia and memories of more innocent times when White Castle burgers, hot mustangs, and cruising the board walk were the essentials for a perfect summer or was it a summer crush that made everything seem perfect.

This past weekend we had the privilege of attending an awesome competition that involved, twerking, swimsuits, beer pong, liquor and laughter otherwise referred to as just another day at The Clevelander at Marlins Park. We were asked to judge the Pool Boy and Pool Girl Competition and had an absolute blast. The Clevelander opened up a location at the Marlins Stadium, where fans can eat awesome food, drink, swim in the pool and get up close and personal with the sexy Marlin Energy Team. On any given day, you will experience in professional body painting, a kickass DJ and… oh ya,  a baseball game too. ;-)  The hopeful Pool Boys and Girls had to compete in aquatic baseball fetch, beer pong, interviews and a dance contest to win the crowns.  Allison and Corey pictured below in their victor robes earned the coveted titles. We loved this spot and will definitely be back to participate in more fun shenanigans.

The legendary Cannonball Adderley was a Broward County band director at Dillard High School. During Cannonball’s tenure he taught at both the historic Old Dillard site at 1009 NW 4th Street (now a museum on the National Register of Historic Sites), and the current home of Dillard High School at 2501 NW 11th Street. The Old Dillard Museum now hosts an annual concert series–the Cannonball Jazz Series–in honor of a hometown saxophonist who became the most commercially successful jazz musician of his day.

Lisa Boccard (alumna ’80) speaks and presents her exhibit to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. When 29, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer and has been in ongoing treatment again since 2003 for metastatic breast. A tireless cancer advocate, Ms. Boccard is also the author of “The Cure Package”, a photo exhibit depicting her travels with breast cancer.

She appeared on the Rosie O’Donnell Show and represented the state of Florida in 1993 by presenting President Clinton with 2.6 million signatures requesting the resources needed to end the breast cancer epidemic.

She is a co-founder and a member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition and serves on several committees for the American Cancer Society. In 2003, her brother Vincent and his wife Terry founded the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund that helps provide funding for screening mammograms for women who cannot afford them. The exhibit is free. Over here at Grovetoberfest HQ summer is quite a special time. It’s the time of the year when we get to visit other festivals, try new beers, and most importantly, get ready for Grovetoberfest. Yes, we realize Grovetoberfest is in October and summer starts in May, but we have lots to do around here to get ready. For example, we just polished up the Free Tasting Series schedule. It’s not easy picking 7 deserving locations to host our free beer tastings. We also have to come up with interesting themes and write-ups – well, like this one. In addition, our crack graphics team has to pick just the right photo or take the right photo for each tasting. It’s a thankless job and our boss is no picnic. For example, the photo for our first tasting “Summer Beer is Here” had to be taken on-location. We just couldn’t find any stock images that said “summer” and “craft beer.” So our team loaded up the boat and headed to Bimini to take a few rounds of photos just to come up with one good one. As we’ve said before, it’s a thankless job. We chugged along and did our duty in order to deliver the perfect shot for the tasting. Above is the result.

Summer beers are always a favorite, especially in Miami where it feels like summer for 10 months of the year. A former friend of ours used to call these dog days “butt tickle hot.” He meant that it was so hot, that sweat would drip down his back, down his plumber’s crack, and make him tickle. Vivid, but nasty visual. That’s why he’s our “former friend.”

We promise no butt tickling and plenty of great summer beers as we kick off the Grovetoberfest Free Tasting Series at Barracuda Bar & Grill in the Grove. Join us Monday July 29 from 6pm to 8pm. Be sure to get there at 6pm because we only have slots for the first 50 people who come through the door.

Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam Comes to Miami

Cirque du Soleil is a company that has been around for many years entertaining and enamoring an array of diverse crowds and cultures around the world. I have had the privilege to dig seriously into the mesmerizing world of these romantic, comedic, dramatic and poetically-mastered acrobatic stories that have touched the hearts and lives of many. In the search for some answers, I have come across the most fascinating facts, and have compiled a few pieces of information about the shows and the history of Cirque du Soleil.

An interview with Cirque du Soleil’s spokesperson:

Tell us a little bit about how a show is born…what are the first pieces of inspired thoughts, and the actions taken thereafter to put those pieces together to make those ideas come to life?  
First comes the creative spark in the genius mind of the Director of Creation. It could be an image, a song, a feeling… anything! A team, including the World’s top Creators in each field, is then put together to bring these ideas to life.  

How is then a program arranged or coordinated along with all the logistics? 
The Creation process of a Cirque du Soleil show averages 13 months! During that time a lot happens simultaneously; creation, casting, production, rehearsals. So much happens that it is hard to describe. I would say the best way to experience it is to watch the Emmy Award winning series “Fire Within” following the creation of Cirque du Soleil VAREKAI.

Besides the performers, how many other people are involved in the production/behind-the-scenes to put on a Cirque du Soleil show? 
On Quidam we have 45 performers coming from 20 different countries and 45 crew members. Show technicians, cooks, sport medicine therapists, truck drivers, accountants…altogether the Quidam family requires 90 people from 25 countries to make the magic happen.  

What inspired this upcoming show, Quidam, in particular?  
Franco Dragone had spearheaded several Cirque du Soleil productions and wanted to explore a new dimension; real life, real characters, real emotions. This time around Cirque du Soleil brings you into the imaginary world of a little girl, Zoé.

What is the intention, not just with Quidam, but with all the previous, current and future stories performed by Cirque du Soleil…is it more entertaining, or is intention more towards connecting with the audience at an emotional level?
Cirque du Soleil is dedicated to the creation, production and performance of artistic works whose mission is to invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke the emotions of people around the world.

What can we expect from this show that could, perhaps, be different from all the other shows we have seen to date?
Quidam is a beautiful, emotional haunting production. Instead of putting on stage fantastical creatures, Quidam visits a world where eccentric characters take the shape of humans with real life concerns and emotions.

Would you like to share something in particular about the main character of this story, or about the storyline of Quidam?
The great thing with Quidam is, it is very theatrical but the storyline is not force-fed to the audience, therefore you might be sitting next to a person that sees a completely different meaning behind the imagery of Quidam depending on their own life story. I always love to eardrop on conversation as the crown leaves the show – you hear the best show reviews and interpretations!

Whitespace, The Mordes Collection is located on a lake waterfront with a sand beach, and features a landscape with a long stretch of grass, elements of bushes and trees and a building with concrete walls and a wrap around tarmac.

Osun Osogbo is the site of the Main Shrine to Osun, the River Goddess, whom traditionalists from many cultures in The Diaspora pay homage to.
Oshun, or Ochun (pronounced [ɔʃún]) in the Yoruba religion, is an Orisha who reigns over love, intimacy, beauty, wealth and diplomacy. She is worshiped also in Brazilian Candomblé Ketu, with the name spelled Oxum. She should not be confused, however, with a different Orisha of a similar name spelled “Osun,” who is the protector of the Ori, or our heads and inner souls. ochun relates mostly to woman but also man.

Patronage: love, marriage, maternity, beauty, rivers

Ọṣhun is beneficent, generous and very kind. She does, however, have a horrific temper, one which she seldom ever loses. When she does, it causes untold destruction. Oshun is said to have gone to a drum festival one day and to have fallen in love with the king-dancer Shango, god of lightning & thunder. Since that day, Shango has been married to Oba, Oya, and Oshun, though Oshun is said to be considered his principal wife.

All forms of socio-cultural developments have some attributes of celebration and thanksgiving to the Almighty Spiritual Force. Festivals are therefore regarded as important socio-cultural means of supplications to the Supreme Being, at most times through intermediaries according to different individual’s belief. Consequently, the month of August of every year has become a unique month among the people of Osogboland. It is the month of celebration, traditional cleansing of the city and cultural reunion of the people with their ancestors and founders of the Osogbo Kingdom. The celebration of Osun Osogbo Festival is a period of stocktaking and assemblage of all sons and daughters of Osogboland and most especially Yoruba speaking people both in Nigeria and Diaspora.

The origin of the Festival according to historical records can be described as an account of the legendary encounter between the early settlers / founders of Osogbo with the Osun Osogbo deity. In about 1370AD the founder of Osogbo, Oba Gbadewolu Larooye and the great hunter Olutimehin settled in the sacred Osun forest to establish the kingdom and actualized a pact of association and togetherness with the River Osun deity. Since then Osogbo has remained peaceful, progressive and benevolent city without any ravage of war or pestilence. This pact of association, which is rekindled every year in the month of august, is the foundation of a cultural fiesta that has catapulted itself into world recognition as one of the largest tourist attraction in Nigeria.

The cultural celebration tagged Osun Osogbo Festival has a two-week programmed of events starting with the spiritual cleansing of the town. This is generally known as Ìwòpòpò, followed by Olójúmérìndínlógún which is the lightening of the centuries old 16-points lamp three days later. Ìboríadé – the assemblage of all the crowns of past rulers (Ataojas) for blessings follows some four days later. The Festival’s Grand Finale showcases the cultural procession of the people to the Osun Grove.

Essentially, these activities with other associated onea are to springboard cultural tourism development in Osun state and generally in Nigeria. Despite the influence of western civilization, education and religion, the Festival has to a very large extent manifested its originality, authenticity and acceptability among nations worldwide. The Osun Grove was enlisted officially as a World Heritage Site by United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Durban, South Africa to the joy of the people and the government of Federal Republic of Nigeria in July 2005.

Corporate sponsorship and individual’s identification with any of the festival events will therefore be a rare opportunity to advance corporate relations, products and services patronage with the fulfillment of discharging corporate social responsibilities and national obligations to the Osogbo community, the Government and people of Nigeria.

Summer Production of Coriolanus at the Seabreeze Amphitheater in Carlin Park, Jupiter on Saturday, July 20, 2013.  Coriolanus was presented by  The Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival and the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation.  I had never seen this play and I loved it and the production of it was amazing.  If you have not made it to Shakespeare by the Sea it is a must do.  Great way to spend an evening!!!!

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s 1st Street Deli will offer a “deli-licious” way to start the day when it unveils its breakfast menu on August 1 from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The authentic New York-style delicatessen that serves sandwiches bigger than your appetite is now offering a wide assortment of breakfast sandwiches, omelets, benedicts, cereals, waffles and more. Every July we eagerly anticipate the arrival of the International Mango Festival  at Fairchild Tropical Gardens.  Such a treat the King Mango is, that  despite the rain droves of  people showed up at this venue this past Sunday, July 14th, 2013 .  Mango Tree owners, mango connoisseurs and aficionados like my friend and I, were in for a very refreshing afternoon.

Mangoes from  several countries such as Thailand, Mexico,  India and Florida  to name a few  in representation, were available for tastings, cooking demonstrations,  and to take home and sinfully enjoy.  I had a lot of fun reading the many names of the Mangoes in display. Check out the attached pictures to see what I mean.  There were so many varieties, they need to give them people’s names.  Now you will understand when you hear someone saying , “Pass me a Tommy, will ya?” they’re actually referring to a mango.

I learned the Mango” is native to India, where apart from being a highly consumed  product, it represents a symbol of love and  given as a token of friendship. Another fun fact I found endearing is the legend that  Buddha sat under a mango tree  to  meditate, giving this fruit an air of enlightenment. For this same reason, it was an  inspiration in clothes and ornamentals. Did you know the famous paisley design was based on the mango? There is so much meaning behind this  deliciousness!

“The Mango Doctors “ were there in situ,  to offer helpful tips and knowledge to the lines of people that took their home-grown mangoes, leaves, and if not, a couple of questions in mind to better understand this fruit’s care and growing process.  In a nutshell, I felt very zen – mind, body and heart aligned to the rhythm of the “mango.”
