Following their tradition of bringing the best of classic ballet for the families, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents: “Fairy Doll” by composer Josef Bayer and choreographed by Maestro Vladimir Issaev.
“Fairy Doll”, originally “Die Puppenfee” was first performed in 1888, and was one of the most successful productions in the late 19th century. Issaev recreated this ballet in two acts in 2009. “Bayer’s music is so inspiring and beautiful, I could not let his opportunity pass by”, says Issaev. “I fell in love with every variation of this music and the more I researched, the more I felt South Florida’s audiences deserved a ballet production of this kind.”
It tells the story of a young boy who works in a doll store that has distinctive dolls from different countries and a beautiful Fairy Doll. Customers just fall in love with the stunning doll. At the end of the day, the owner of the store closes the shop, and the young and distracted assistant is left alone, locked inside. As the night falls, the tired young boy cannot believe his eyes! The Fairy Doll comes to life, and with her magic, she brings all the toys of the store to life.
The production counts on creative and imaginative costume designer Jorge Gallardo to make all the ballet dancers look like real dolls and the sets. On the main roles dancers Lillian Hill, Yuki Beppu, Takayuki Asai, Hirofumi Kitazume and Ramil Bagmanov will share the stage during these four fantastic performances along the rest of the professional corps of ballet.
There will be more than 60 dolls that will come to life from March, 7th to 15th at Aventura Arts & Cultural Centre and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

This event is free to the public.

– Feel free to bring your own blankets and chairs.

– Dinner will be available for sale from Vibe 305!

This month’s featured film: THE WIZ

Featuring spectacular musical numbers with Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Richard Pryor, experience the magic of The Wiz when Dorothy is whisked away to the enchanting wonderland of Oz.

A re imagining of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz featuring an entirely African-American cast, The Wiz was adapted from the 1975 Broadway musical of the same name. The film follows the adventures of Dorothy, a shy Harlem, New York, schoolteacher who finds herself magically transported to the Land of Oz, which resembles a fantasy version of New York City. Befriended by a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion, she travels through the land to seek an audience with the mysterious Wiz, who they say has the power to take her home.

Supported by Art Place.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The 11th of EVERY MONTH
Please Join us Wednesday, February 11th, 2015; Higher Frequency #SpreadLove Event

Capture the frequency with us as we transmute, transform, and transmit higher vibrations through South Florida’s Most inspired musicians and poetically inclined artists who will take to the mic to communicate, share & and In-lighten. This event is for guests to explore a psyche enhancement experience through artistic expressions fitting for the OPEN MINDs. The message of Higher Frequency is one of positive promotion and uniting others to do the same through 4MK #SpreadLove global campaign. An outlet created to vibrate with the artistic community with some of Miami’s most creative underground network of local artists from emcees, singers, poets, artists, designers and more. Unique in its own right, this event is dedicated to giving back to the community and participating in charitable causes and activities globally.

Through 4MK’s #SpreadLove campaign, THIS MONTH, Hosted by Miss Universe Jamaica 2012, Higher Frequency will fund raise for TRENCH TOWN FOR LIFE, a program that is now raising funds to build a new library in Boys Town School in Jamaica to help inspire the youth to read. With the contribution of Sunshine Youth Foundation founded by Miss Universe Jamaica 2012, Chantal Zaky; these young leaders in Trench Town will be In-lightened through the wisdom, knowledge and hearts shared through local supporters, ultimately reaching Global recognition. Higher Frequency will do its part by spreading awareness on Trench Town For Life, rising the love frequency for the youth in Jamaica, and raising funds for the much needed library in Boys Town School. During this coming 11th of the month, we ask for local South Floridians to come and join us as we celebrate love for the youth by donating to Trench Town For Life to help reach their goal of $9,000 for the library project which includes the costs to treat the space for termites, clean out, renovate, decorate, and equip the library space, as well as ship book donations from the UK and USA to Jamaica.

During the event, guests will have the privilege of participating in our raffle to win gifts from our local sponsors. 100% of the proceeds will go to aiding Trench Town For Life.

It’s a pleasure to invite you to join Trench Town For Life for their 2015 Library Drive benefiting Boys Town School in Kingston, Jamaica. The children who attend the school range from age 4, right up to 14 years old, however they do not have adequate reading materials, nor do they have a library on site. As a result, less than 50% of the school’s students meet the national literacy standard. Therefore, the establishment of an on site library is imperative and will certainly impact the faculty, students and community in a significant way. This effort is born from the philosophy that all leaders are avid readers, and the world community must invest in and continue to develop tomorrow’s leaders, today.

About Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP):
SMP was developed as both a cosmetic procedure for men suffering with all types of hair loss, and as a medical procedure to help conceal scars, burns and birthmarks, as well as the full spectrum of alopecia strains. During a SMP procedure, a blend of specialized pigments is deposited into the dermal layer of the skin on the scalp. Using a highly sophisticated combination of angles, penetration depths, deposit sizes and pigment shades, these deposits create an extremely realistic illusion of real shaven hair on the scalp.

About HIS Hair:
HIS Hair Clinic is an internationally recognized, specialist hair loss treatment clinic, with prominent locations in major urban centers around the world. Each clinic complies with (and exceeds) all core professional standards of effective treatments, cleanliness and health and safety. We are always opening new clinics further afield, to enable even greater access to our unique SMP® treatment for hair loss.

Tickets and Info

Eats N Beats, the hugely successful food and spirits event is back again during Miami Food & Wine Week! The first annual Eats N Beats welcomed over 3,500 foodies who were looking to experience an event that was equal parts food, spirits, and music with just the right amount of Miami flare!

Eats N Beats was created as a way to bring Miami Food & Wine week back to the South Floridian. Dubbed the “by locals for locals” event by numerous publications, Eats N Beats welcomed scores of event guests who sampled over 40 of Miami’s best eateries and dozens of wine and spirits. Food coupled with amazing music by some of Miami’s best bands and DJ talents along with nightlife inspired production made this event, uniquely Miami.

Last year Eats N Beats proudly showcased a stellar line up that included: Red Steakhouse, Meat Market, Petit Pois, Steve Haas’s City Hall Restaurant, Nikki Beach, Bongos Cuban Café, Larios on the Beach, Pride & Joy BBQ, Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, Alma Mexicana, The Passion Group-(Dolores, but you can call me Lolita, Crazy About You, and Love is Blind), Celebrity Chef Ralph Pagano’s Unnamed Mexican Restaurant, Sake Room Express, The Rusty Pelican, RA Sushi, Certified Steaks & Seafood, Lemoni Pizzeria, Imperia Restaurant & Lounge, Juana M Brickell, and Epicure Gourmet Market & Café. Eats N Beats also featured a dessert lounge and a stable of top shelf liquors, beer, and wine.

Eats N Beats is a perfect showcase of local culinary artistry paired with premium wines and spirits, minus the velvet rope. Comprised of some of the most renowned restaurants in South Florida, to some of the most mouthwatering dessert artists, Eats N Beats will satisfy the local food enthusiast as well as the sophisticated “foodie” expecting to delight in some of the best dishes and libations our city has to offer. Not to worry, keeping true to our City known for beauty and some flash, the event will touch on all of the senses. Complete with dynamic production, local VIPS and Celebs Eats N Beats will also be outfitted with the comforts one has come to expect from an event in Miami. The showcase will attract those looking for an alternative type of food event, one that brings the best of three worlds: food, music and wines/spirits together seamlessly.

In observance of National Mentoring Month in January, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami is teaming up with the Miami HEAT to help elevate awareness and give Miamians opportunities to become mentors for local youths at risk. BBBS is a nonprofit organization supporting at-risk children through adult mentor relationships.

National Mentoring Month was created in 2002 by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, to focus national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits can work together to increase the number of mentors to help ensure positive outcomes for youths.

During the 7:30 pm games at the AmericanAirlines Arena on January 20, 23, and 27, tables will be set up at the following locations to inform potential volunteers of the various programming alternatives available:
• January 20 (Oklahoma City Thunder): Section 115 (Inner Wall)
• January 23 (Indiana Pacers): Section 102 (Inner Wall)
• January 27 (Milwaukee Bucks): Section 102 (Inner Wall)
The arena is located at 601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33132.

These activities are part of the organization’s “Man Drive” to recruit more male volunteers. While all volunteers are welcomed, BBBS is particularly interested in male volunteers at this time in order to help reduce the waiting list of boys in need of mentors.

Get Ready as Dragons Invade Virginia Key

Miami Dragon Boat Festival

Dragons will once again invade the City of Miami’s waters as the Miami International Dragon Boat Festival returns to the Miami Rowing Club on Virginia Key. This event is a great opportunity for groups to come together and participate in a fun-filled day of competitive racing.

Often dubbed as a “canoe on steroids”, dragon boats are 42’ in length and don a traditional dragon head and tail. Dating back more than 2,000 years, this ancient Chinese pastime has captured the attention of the competitive sporting world, making it the second fastest growing water sport.

The festival is currently seeking participants! No experience or gear necessary- just grab twenty (20) friends or coworkers, a paddle and go!

Teams for the Miami International Dragon Boat Festival can be formed by companies, bringing employees together for a day of fun competition and team building. Other teams can come from educational institutions, civic and community organizations, gyms, families and friends etc. This event is open to participants of all sizes and abilities, ages 13 and up. Prior experience is not necessary, practice sessions and equipment will be provided to registered teams. Dragon boat racing supports camaraderie, fitness, competition and a lesson on the ultimate goal of reaching the finish line together!

Attendance to the event is free and open to the public. Registration fees vary based on team category.

Don’t miss out on this cultural experience and a day of fun!

Crazy for Meninas… By popular request we’ve extended the exhibit “Meninas Unwrapped”. Join MANO Fine Art on Saturday, January 17th during the Bird Road Art Walk for a last look at the popular exhibition “Meninas Unwrapped” featuring work by Daniel Garcia and MANO.

About the exhibit
“Meninas Unwrapped”, is a nod to the popularity of Diego Velazquez’s ICONIC motif interpreted by Daniel Garcia and MANO. Velazquez would be pleased.

The interpretation of the world’s masterpieces is hardly a new phenomenon. Artists often look to the past to learn from the old masters. In “Meninas Unwrapped” contemporary artists: Daniel Garcia and MANO take on Diego Velazquez, interpreting his famed 1656 painting, “Las Meninas”, considered one of the greatest masterpieces ever painted.

The exhibit is not only a matter of looking back at the past but also at the popularity of the La Menina, it seems that every generation has made Velazquez’s “meninas” a reflection of their own, hundreds of artists from Picasso to Vik Muniz have been inspired by the works’ enigmatic qualities. Velazquez would be pleased

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

Miguel Rodez Art Projects presents Beyond Innocence featuring the work of Sergio Chavez. Not your typical sales pitch: Sergio Chavez does not try to impress one with astute use of materials. He is not adept at creating subtle gradient color shifts. No. He is not a master draftsman either. Instead, Sergio Chavez is a master of enchantment. Those who focus only on academic refinement may be repulsed by his work. Some may say that their little daughter can do this. The fact is no one’s little daughter can do or actually does this. He does! There is a lot more going on than meets the eye. Although his style may render him vulnerable to harsh criticism from the academic crowd, he consistently and incessantly puts out work that, either makes us think or that delights us with his unique provocative charm. He uses humor, satire and humility to hook us in and then make us think before we even realize what just happened. This devotion to visually communicate what comes from his soul, in a poetic, child-like and disarming style, regardless of what critics may think, is what being an artist is all about. Sixty-one of his pieces will be on view and available at extremely reasonable prices at Miguel Rodez Art Projects.

In the husband and wife duo, West meets East in music for piano and computers.
Composer/pianist Chen-Hui Jen and composer/computer musician Jacob David Sudol met in grad school at UC San Diego where they began collaborating on projects that combine Eastern and Western musical idioms quickly.
“Since we are both composers, we select and interpret works based on our ears, tastes, as well as our deeper understanding on other composers’  works.  Our thoughts also incorporate  western and asian philosophies and aesthetics.  This is reflected in our programming choices.  Following our multi-cultural backgrounds and diverse experiences, we’re also very open-minded to try different things and other works that many other performers wouldn’t dare to combine in a program or perform,“ say Sudol and Chen about forming their Jen/Sudol Duo in 2010.

To date, they have performed 16 concerts, presenting both newly composed repertoire and ‘classic’ music for piano and electronics in cities such as San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, and Taipei.

“….when I’m working I forget that Jacob’s my husband.  I guess being intimate makes our collaboration easier, because we both want to make good music,” says Jen. Sudol adds: “we don’t really need to worry about manners when rehearsing because we both know that we can’t offend or upset each other while rehearsing.” Today’s concert is indeed about quality and variety. The program is designed to highlight the diversity and compelling imaginary and poetic worlds that result from combining rich possibilities of electronic music with the acoustic piano.  You will hear synthetics sounds merging with the acoustic piano, the piano sonorities combined with digitally retuned pianos for the purpose of creating magical resonances and echoes slowly catching up with their original acoustic sound. Colorful instrumental resonances will present a seamless marriage between the acoustic and electronic sonorities in a way that could never happen with just acoustic instruments or just electronic technologies.

The program will feature music from the Americas, Europe and Asia, namely, the works by M. Davidovsky, B. Jacobs, J.D. Sudol, K. Y. Chong and G. F. Haas.

Watch Jen performing Sudol’s wash yourself of yourself here.

“SAVAGE: Art made by Animals for Animals” is an art show featuring a collection of works created by the animals at Zoo Miami and their stewards. The show explores several themes, the first being the immediate relationship between each animal and its’ human trainer/keeper. It also offers viewers a new way to experience the majesty of animals through motion and texture, as they express themselves through various media. This event is a collaborative fundraiser between Zoo Miami and the South Florida Chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers. All proceeds from the art show will go towards supporting species conservation and research both locally and internationally.

Habitats and species are under tremendous pressures from our rapidly changing world. Corsair / Scott Conant

Chopped judge, TV personality and the man behind plenty of the country’s top restaurants, Scott Conant, is back in South Florida with his newest concept, Corsair, inside Aventura’s Turnberry Isle Hotel. Chat Chow TV sat down with the charming chef to learn more about Corsair, its inspiration and what rituals he has for his restaurants.

The welcoming restaurant located close to the property’s massive golf course plays off its maritime-inspired name with a warm palate and interior tones designed by popular designer Meyer Davis.

“It’s a celebration of sorts of this area,” Conant adds about the design.

The restaurant serves a blend of Mediterranean and local flavors to create its unique spins on dishes like a deconstructed lasagna, polenta waffles and porcini braised veal. For the beverage program he enlisted California’s Rob Floyd who has set up bar programs for the SLS in Hollywood, CA and several of Conant’s restaurants.

As for his other popular restaurant on Miami Beach, Scarpetta, that has produced some of Miami’s top chefs including Macchialina’s Mike Pirolo and Top Chef’s Nina Compton, he says they are all good friends still and enjoy getting in the kitchen together.

“It’s nice to know we can bring the band back together and play some cover songs,” Conant says with a slight laugh.

Want to know what Conant’s favorite indulgence is? Or what ritual he has at every restaurant of his? Watch the video above to find out.

Voyage to the Orient and to another parallel universe of Dragons, Wizards and Thrones, Oh My…

February 7th 2015 marks the latest fairy tale chapter in the Florida Renaissance Festival storybook revealing six themed weekends until March 15 at Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park. Where patrons fill storylines as immersive characters experiencing surreal experiences by festival performers and characters.

“Living, breathing theater is what you experience at the Florida Renaissance Festival,” said Bobby Rodriguez, Founder. “Everyday is a new experience, everyday is a passport to a journey complete with fairytale and fantasy.”

New acts in the 2015 festival season- Cast in Bronze will bring the haunting beauty of the carillon to more patrons by demonstrating its versatility with other instruments. The carillons of Cast in Bronze consist of 35 bells each with a total of four tons each.

Cirque du Sewer is the world’s only girl and rat circus performing feats of balance with her impressively trained vermin. The rats jump through flaming hoops, complete obstacle courses, and join Melissa on her slack rope for a death-defying finale.

Fan favorites also return to the festival – While cracking bullwhips, juggling bowling balls or eating fire “Broon” keeps the laughs alive with a dry wit and an extemporaneous style that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. Craic is a 4-piece earth moving, themed drama using heavy percussions and medieval bagpipes to create a boisterous musical performance. Splatter Time Players are a group of young men who have dedicated their lives to two things: Mud & Entertainment. Flight of the Raptor features the beauty of flight and is designed to educate, enlighten, and sometimes even amaze audiences with a large cast of predator birds including falcons and hawks.

2015 Theme Weekends:

* Swashbucklers & Sirens Weekend- February 7 and 8 – The village is overrun with rogues and scallywags on this Pirate-themed weekend. Can beauty tame the savage scoundrel? Hopefully we will see enough pirate queens and mermaids to find out!

* Time Travelers Weekend- February 14, 15 and 16 – Calling all adventurers from across the millennia! This weekend is for you! Bring our your brassiest Victorian “gears” and join us on “Steampunk Saturday.” On Sunday, no one will keep the Doctors away…be they one of the 12 or Doc Brown himself, the village opens itself up to time travelling pioneers, aliens, Browncoats, Federations and Empires. And don’t miss Cosplay Monday, where anything goes! Anime? Superheroes?

* Wenches Weekend – “Bodacious Bodices” – February 21 and 22 – Pamper your inner bad-girl this weekend, where the ladies are the lords and rule the land. Bold and bawdy, this weekend belongs to the lasses and their ample assets.

* Voyage to the Orient- February 28 and March 1 – This weekend brings us to the Far East! While Europe was experiencing the advent of the Renaissance, rich cultural traditions had been prominent for centuries on the other side of the world. Journey with us to discover the Orient of Marco Polo’s time and experience the sights and sounds of Shogun, Samurai, and the unbroken Ming dynasty that ruled China for almost 300 years.

* Dragons & Wizards and Thrones, Oh My! – March 7 and 8 – One does not simply walk into Mordor, but you can walk directly out of the pages of your favorite books! From the Red Wedding to the Shire, join us as we fill our village with Hobbits, Wizards, Dragons, White Walkers, Fairies and Elves.

* Kilts & Colleens – St Patrick’s Weekend – March 14 and 15 – Celebrate the luck and culture of the Irish, the Scottish and the Celtic traditions of the North Seas! Grab your kilt and get your Celt on! Show your Celtic pride!

The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by the nationally acclaimed Bobby Rodriguez Productions and strives to create an entertaining and cultural experience for adults and children alike. The sponsors of the Florida Renaissance Festival include Walgreens, Comcast, Warsteiner Beer, Coca-Cola, Broward County Transit and Community Bank.

The Florida Renaissance Festival at Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park will be open weekends beginning February 7th from 10 a.m. to sunset (including, Monday February 16th, President’s Day) until March 15th. Prices range from $21.00 for adults and $9 for children ages 6 to 11 years of age. Children 5 and younger are free. By understanding and taking healthy measures to eradicate Cultural Stress, each person can dramatically increase his or her odds of unlocking their personal potential to look younger, feel younger and live healthier, happier and more rewarding lives.”

Photographs taken by Anthony Jordon of Average Joe Art Sale and Annette’s 50th Birthday Party at Yo Space on Sunday, January 4, 2015.  What a wonderful way to celebrate my 50th birthday, surrounded by amazing friends and beautiful art. The Average Joe Art Sales had visiting artists along with their resident artists selling limited edition prints, original art and wonderful merchandise ranging from $5.00 to $500.00, so you can find something no matter your budget.  While you are there, you can visit with the resident artists and see what they are currently working on in their studio. To make it even better they donated 10% of all sales to a non-profit organization , this month it was Life Is Art, Inc.

About YO: “Founded in April 2011, what began as a passion for art, music and Miami has evolved into a force to be reckoned with in the local scene. Bringing together creatives from all walks of life, we strive to shine a light on the elements of Miami culture that should be recognized and celebrated. The company was born on a Facebook page and to this day that’s where content is most frequently updated/uploaded to. The website is a great resource for it’s Event Calendar to keep you up to date on what’s going on in advance, and also for the Blog section where you can read everything from artist interviews to philosophical ramblings.”

RAGTIME is a sweeping musical portrait of early 20th century America tells the powerful tale of a white, upper-middle class family, an African American couple, and an Eastern European immigrant escaping to America with his daughter, as they all confront the timeless contradictions of wealth, poverty, freedom, prejudice, hope, and despair in pursuit of the American Dream. Unfolding through the fiery rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley, and the vibrant klezmer of the Lower East Side, this vivid and unforgettable Tony-winning score bursts onto the stage “on the wheels of a dream” in what will be the largest and most epic production ever staged at Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre.

Former Miami Heat player, Shane Battier and his wife Heidi, continue to give back to the community they call home by hosting the fourth annual “South Beach Battioke” on March 3rd, 8 p.m. at the Fillmore Theatre in Miami Beach – a star-studded, karaoke charity event where attendees include Miami’s elite, philanthropists and socialites while watching their favorite Miami Heat stars live out their pop star fantasies, all for a great cause.
“We are proud that we have been able to engage our community and send brilliant young minds to colleges and universities through the fundraising efforts of South Beach Battioke,” said Shane Battier, Founder of The Battier Take Charge Foundation. “This will be our fourth year putting together the most authentic and entertaining event in South Florida. I am extremely thankful to the Heat organization and everyone that supports us including my former teammates that come out and sing karaoke for charity.”
“Our partnership with the Battier Take Charge Foundation means the world to us here at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Together, we are making sure our kids are “Taking Charge” of their lives through positive mentoring relationships, high school graduation, and post-secondary education,” said Deborah Perez, Continuing Education Manager at Big Brothers Big Sisters. “The commitment the Foundation has to our youth is invaluable and in partnership, we are helping to develop the next generation of “Champions.”
“The Battier Take Charge Foundation has given me the torch of success that I will carry enthusiastically across the finish line. Thank you for the personal investment, I love the organization and its positive impact on shaping America’s future leaders,” said David Green, current student at University of Florida and 2012 scholar recipient of The Battier Take Charge Foundation.
Notable past karaoke participants include Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Pat Riley, James Jones, Norris Cole, Udonis Haslem, Greg Oden, Jimmy Buffet, Gabrielle Union and Ken Jeong. Last year’s event was attended by over 600 people and raised more than $300,000 dollars. This year’s event aims to shatter that record, yet again, with funds raised through ticket sales, auction items and sponsorships.
“South Beach Battioke” 2015 is an annual event that raises funds and awareness for The Battier Take Charge Foundation, a non-profit organization established by Shane and his wife, Heidi. The foundation awards college scholarships to underprivileged high school students in Miami, Houston and Detroit. The foundation partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, KIPP Academy in Houston and Horizon Upward Bound in Detroit by empowering our future young leaders to “Do Well, Do Good,” the phrase that serves as the motto of the foundation and the Battier family.
Tickets to the “South Beach Battioke” 2015 are currently on-sale and are available for purchase at www.takechargefoundation.org. Advanced purchase tickets are significantly discounted at $175 per person. Admission at the door is $250. First 100 general admission tickets sold will receive a personalized Shane Battier autograph. In addition, table sponsorship packages are available by emailing info@takechargefoundation.org. Admission price includes delicious delectables from some of South Florida’s top restaurants, an open bar and of course, a chance to watch your favorite celebrities take the stage and belt out your favorite tunes. Attendees must be 21 or older.
Those who can’t make it to the event can still make an impact in the lives of at-risk
students by clicking here to make a donation to the Take Charge Foundation.

About the Battier Take Charge Foundation

The story of a South Beach legend

Walk to the Fifth Street lifeguard stand on South Beach at 5:15 pm any day. You will see a bearded, long-haired shirtless man wearing black shorts, one black glove, and a headband that’s black, too. People call him the “Raven,” and he’s been standing in front of that lifeguard stand at that time for the last forty years, getting ready for his eight-mile jog up and down the beach. That’s right—Raven has run eight miles on the sands of South Beach every day since 1975, through concussions, hurricanes, food poisoning, animal attacks, hail and high water. And he’s still going.

This event will feature:

A reading of poetry written by the Raven himself
Screening of the feature documentary
Invitation to join the Raven on his famous 8 mile run on the beach following the film at 4:15 PM

There are a ton of amazing immersive media projects being created these days, but rarely do people discuss the process for how these types of projects actually get made.

The form is still so new that it can feel like a bit of a mystery. This workshop will answer questions like:

What are the key steps in conceiving and creating immersive media projects?
What are the phases and what activities happen in each of them?
What tools do you use in each phase?
What are the types of team members you need and how do you find them?
The workshop will commence with a hands-on paper prototyping exercise where we put what we’ve discussed to use.

This workshop is limited to 20 attendees. Creators should come with a project that they are working on (as well as a laptop/tablet if they wish).

ABOUT THE HOST

A digital veteran of 20 years, Mike Knowlton has always pushed the boundaries of storytelling and technology. What will America look like in 10, 15, even 20 years? Futurestates, the revolutionary series produced by ITVS, has been proposing answers to these questions since 2010. For its fifth and final season, Futurestates is presented as an immersive online video experience featuring short films that imagine robots with feelings, what education looks like in a wired world, and the future of prisons and our penal system. The central question at the heart of Futurestates is how technologies we may take for granted have a profound effect on our capacity to feel, create, live… and be human.

MELANCHOLALALAND

It’s the 21st century, and time to re-invent opera, but in a way that’s more fun, less pretentious, and a little messed up.

MelanchoLalaland™—with music by composer and Florida Atlantic University professor Joey Bargsten and libretto by writer Thea Zimmer—accomplishes this by fusing traditional elements of opera, theater, and dance with new and experimental visual media forms, all set to an electronic music score. MelanchoLalaland™ tells the dark tragi-comic story of three artist/engineers who design mind-altering experiences, enhanced by self-pleasuring technologies and a variety of brain chemicals. They deal with disgruntled employees, corporate takeovers, dissatisfied girlfriends, and cheesy space-aliens.

A PROPER MARRIAGE

Concept / Choreography: Pioneer Winter

A Proper Marriage is a speculative piece that comments on the perceived co-dependence of music and movement, especially live music with dance–underlying properties of a dancer’s dependence on composition, and the musician’s own foresight to create action from sound. Sheet music is attached to the backs of dancers, and the musicians follow the dancer in order to read the music and maintain the melody. Irony rests in the notion that if the dancer moves too quickly and the musician cannot keep up, the music will falter and the dancer’s own rhythm will stop.

Pioneer Winter is a Miami-native choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker of Pioneer Winter / Collective. He is co-director of RIFT Blackbox and the curator of transmedia performances for FilmGate Interactive Media Conference. Winter also directs Project LEAP (Living Equality through Arts and Performance), a free dance and creative communication program for LGBTQ teens that focuses on teaching how to use the arts for activism and social change. He was recently awarded the 2014-2015 Miami Choreographer’s Fellowship, and is on faculty of the FIU Honors College. His project Grass Stains was also recently awarded a Knight Arts Challenge Grant.

The Center for Writing and Literature @ Miami Dade College (The Center @ MDC) is kicking off The Big Read.

I am writing to introduce you to The Great Office Escape (TheGOE) “a grownup field day” for South Floridians to play, explore and discover ways to live healthier, feel better; and win prizes while they do it. The Great Office Escape is a wellness day that encourages teams, individuals and kids alike ranging from co-workers, colleagues, friends and family members to put down their phones and enjoy a pressure-free day – all with one shared goal – to discover the fun of feeling good. TheGOE aims to provide participants with a way to unplug from the workplace and provides tools to foster healthy habits – both at work and home. Unlike traditional corporate events, The Great Office Escape focuses on positivity as opposed to competition. The objective is to take small, achievable steps, and celebrate ones’ accomplishments; whether big or small.

Taking place on March 7th at Haulover Beach, in Bay Harbor, The Great Office Escape is open to office teams, neighborhood teams and club teams as well as individuals and kids, the combinations are endless! To become a “citizen” (as a team ) of The Great Office Escape, (www.goe.com), all that is required is an enthusiastic group of 10 people over the age of 18 with at least two females prepared for fun with a healthy dose of side effects! There is even a KID’S ZONE; after all, living healthier is a family affair.

Anything but ordinary, contests at TheGOE include CEO Dunk Tank, Tricycle Races, Nerf Dodgeball, Hula Hoop, Wacky Obstacle Course, Social Media Challenges and Sandcastle Building. Teams receive official “Passports to Feelgoodsville” and can earn stamps by participating in games, contests and our Interactive Expo Booths. Teams that turn in a completed passport qualify to win prizes including restaurant gift certificates, massages and more.

The Great Office Escape concept was born to promote Health and Wellness in the workplace and to welcome, encourage and motivate those who are often times intimated by traditional fitness. Although it’s hard to admit, wellness competitions, like 5k’s and fitness challenges are intimidating to most people. Even so, The Great Office Escape offers alternative ways to wellness to those already involved in a healthy lifestyle. Knowing that cost of healthcare and insurance is on the rise and employees and employers are all feeling the impact; one of the most effective ways to help keep a lid on those costs is through wellness initiatives. Healthy employees get sick less often, lessening the cost burden on themselves and on their employers. Healthy individuals are proven to be more productive, have decreased absenteeism and improved morale.

The Great Office Escape 2015 is taking place on March 7th at Haulover Beach Miami, FL and early registration costs are just $50 per person. The rate goes to $57 per person on January 31, 2015. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Past sponsors include Humana, Bacardi, KIND Healthy Snacks, Viva Coco and Tropical Credit Union.

Arts Mean Business Forum Highlights from Miami Arts Week and next steps in new economy discussions

beaconimage-300x151

ON DECEMBER 18th,  LAURA BRUNEY wrote the article found below, which was originally published December 12, 2014 on their blog, www.artsbizmiami.org/ArtsBizBlog. It was edited and republished for the ARTSBlog with permission from the author.

We are excited to hear, where the city is headed in these discussions of new economies and to see who is going to be asked to be a part of these discussions from our community.

The 2014 edition of Art Basel week this December in Miami featured the perfect marriage of arts and business. Beyond the dozens of satellite fairs and thousands of gallery booths catering to collectors, Miami Art Weekoffered a far more compelling benefit for businesses eager to court potential clients. Pacesetters from all industries and brand power houses swooned at the reach of art week. Developers, financial investment companies, tech start-ups, luxury car brands, and more cleverly leveraged the arts as a strategic imperative for business. These companies know the arts mean business.

During Art Week, the Arts & Business Council of Miami hosted an Access Breakfast Forum with theBeacon Council to discuss how the arts are transforming Miami and why the creative industry matters to business. Donna Abood, Chair of the Beacon Council, and I opened the program with some astonishing facts. The arts industry in Miami-Dade has a 1.1 billion dollar impact and employs 30,000 full time workers. More than 13 million people participated in the arts this year, and thousands of business professionals shared their skills as volunteers and board members. Cultural tourism, a major component of brand Miami, brings 5 million visitors each year. Robert Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts, kicked off the program talking about how the arts bring a competitive advantage to companies that are involved.
The flash of transformation in any city is culture and art. Collaborations between arts and business enhance quality of life, especially in cities like Miami.

Lynch praised our vibrant cultural community. “I was immersed in art from the moment I stepped off the plane and walked through Miami International Airport, which was filled art installations and marvelous art. Every time I come there is something new and I am always energized. Miami is a 24 hour city. As I was returning to my hotel at midnight last evening a lot people were just leaving to start their night.”

“Business support for the arts isn’t a charity; it’s an investment that creates shared value through mutually beneficial partnerships,” said Lynch. He outlined the value the arts bring to business including brand empowerment, leveraging connections with clients and consumers, professional development that encourages innovation and creativity, and enhancing the workspace. Involvement with the arts is good for executives, clients, shareholders, and employees.

Beacon Council President & CEO, Larry Williams, closed out the morning by sharing the impressive economic impact figures for Miami-Dade’s creative industries. Lynch perfectly summed up the breakfast forum by saying that extending partnerships to span all industries and fostering collaboration is building the new economy of ideas in Miami.
