Pinecrest Gardens proudly presents the second annual Tropical Nights Live from the Banyan Bowl, combining contemporary music with a Latin American touch in the heart of one of South Florida’s cherished botanical gardens. This engaging three-show mini-series presents a vibrant blend of music and dance, punctuated by the infectious rhythms of Tango, Samba, and Salsa, amid the lush tropical scenery of Pinecrest Gardens.

Tango Dreams is a company that was formed by bringing together some of the best artists of the genre. Four top-level musicians led by the pianist, arranger and producer Anibal Berraute, Grammy nominee singer Mariana Quinteros, and worldwide acclaimed dancers Adrian Veredice-Alejandra Hobert and Armando Orzuza-Nuria Martinez. This amazing cast will take us to the tango born in the suburbs of Buenos Aires at the beginning of the 20th century, as well us showing how tango evolved, until reaching Astor Piazzolla, the true innovator of the style, who added elements of jazz and classical music to raise it internationally. Orchestra Miami presents “Beethoven on the Beach” its annual popular free outdoor concert series. The 2023 version is entitled “Unfinished”, and the program centers around two works by famous composers which were left unfinished.
The first piece is the little-known 10th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven, which was left unfinished at his death in 1827. At the time of his death, Beethoven left several sketches of two of the movements. Orchestra Miami will perform what exists of this symphony for the first time in South Florida, in a realization by musicologist Barry Cooper. This little-known piece by one of the world’s most famous composers will be paired with a very well-known unfinished work, Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony N. 8 in D Minor, D. 759. Also on the program is the Overture and Entr’Actes to Bizet’s famous opera Carmen, and the overture to an unfinished comic opera by Camille Saint-Säens. The 42 musicians of Orchestra will be led by Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi.
There are three opportunities to hear this fabulous concert! Beethoven on the Beach, Orchestra Miami’s annual FREE outdoor concert series returns this year with Beethoven on the Beach: Reboot! Now that the orchestra has performed all nine symphonies outdoors for free, it’s time to explore some of Beethoven’s lesser-known works. This year’s concert will feature Beethoven’s complete incidental music to Egmont, Goethe’s famous play about a tragic hero. This dramatic and enduring work will be performed in its entirety with English narration by Gordon Kalton Williams, and will feature soprano Robyn Marie Lamp. Also on the program is Schubert’s Symphony N. 4 in C Minor, D 417. Written when Schubert was only 19 years old, it is only one of two symphonies which Schubert wrote in the minor key. Called the “tragic” symphony by the composer, it takes much inspiration from Schubert’s idol, Beethoven, including modeling the opening theme from Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 18 N. 4.

Two performances only! Friday, February 25th at 8 PM at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW 57 Avenue, 33156 and Sunday, March 6th, 7 PM at the North Beach Bandshell, 7275 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, 33141. The Max Weinberg Quintet epitomizes the synergy of jazz instrumentalists bringing their best instincts and improvisations to the stage.

Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer Max Weinberg, most widely known for his nearly 47 year association with Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band and as the band leader of the shining Max Weinberg Seven on NBC’s Late Night and Tonight Show broadcasts, brings his power, dynamism, versatility, and chops to all of his various musical aggregations—his Quintet is no exception as Weinberg has traveled the U.S. and Europe with these fine musicians drawing rave reviews.

They delve deeply into the classic mid-60’s world of hard bop, as exemplified by such iconic musicians as Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker, Horace Silver, and others of the genre.

The quintet is composed of David Kikoski, himself the leader of the Grammy Award winning Charles Mingus Big Band and a revered pianist who established his reputation early in his career for his work with drumming legend Roy Haynes. Dave has also worked with Chick Corea, Michael and Randy Brecker, Al Foster, and film composer Christian McBride.
Saxophonist Brandon Wright maintains an incredibly active session career on the east and west coasts, has been a mainstay of the Doc Severinsen Orchestra, and has worked with Max Weinberg in varying capacities including his Quintet, his 23 piece society dance band, and the occasional appearance with Max and Bruce Springsteen.

Chuck Bergeron has been playing bass professionally for almost four decades and has performed, toured, or recorded in multiple musical styles on six continents.

Brian Lynch is a multi-Grammy winning jazz trumpeter. He has been a member of EddiePalmieri’s Afro-Caribbean Jazz group and has led the Latin Side of Miles project with trombonist Conrad Herwig.

But, synergy is what it’s all about—the musical conversation these players establish from the very first downbeat. Commanding soloists all, they’ll have audiences on their feet with their renditions of energetic hard bop classics.

Orchestra Miami presents Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery, a theatrical concert about the life and music of Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi. Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery is a compelling mystery about an orphan girl in the early 1700s who is in search of her roots. A central clue to the mystery is a missing Stradivarius violin that the Duke of Cremona has brought to Vivaldi’s school of the Pietá in the hopes of finding his long- lost grandchild.

Orchestra Miami, led by Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi perform this intriguing tale which features more than 25 excerpts from Vivaldi’s most popular works, including the Four Seasons, the Violin Concerto in A minor, and the Guitar Concerto. The music is magically woven into the drama as two actors solve a mystery built around the historic context of the composer’s real life and his school of the Pietá. Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery is “an imaginative way to introduce young audiences and their families to the life and music of Antonio Vivaldi in a live performance venue.”

Saturday December 8 at 8 PM: The South Motors Jazz Series at Pinecrest Gardens presents Christian McBride’s New Jawn. McBride can be likened to a force of nature, fusing the fire and fury of a virtuoso with the depth and grounding of a seasoned journeyman. With a career now blazing into its third decade, the Philadelphia native has become one of the most requested, most recorded, and most respected figures in the music world today. Raised in a city steeped in soul, McBride moved to New York in 1989 to pursue classical studies at the Juilliard School. There he was promptly recruited to the road by saxophonist Bobby Watson. Call it a change in curriculum: a decade’s worth of study through hundreds of recording sessions and countless gigs with an ever-expanding circle of musicians. Currently he hosts and produces “The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian” on SiriusXM satellite radio and National Public Radio’s “Jazz Night in America,” a weekly radio show and multimedia collaboration between WBGO, NPR and Jazz at Lincoln Center, showcasing outstanding live jazz from across the country. He brings that same breadth of experience to bear as Artistic Advisor for Jazz Programming at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). In March 2016, Mr. McBride became artistic director of the now 63-year-old Newport Jazz festival — taking the reins directly from its 91-year-old co-founder, George Wein.

From his first professional performance with “The Groovy Boys” over fifty years ago, Ellis Marsalis has been a major influence in jazz. At that time, Marsalis was one of the few New Orleans musicians who did not specialize in Dixieland or rhythm and blues. He played with fellow modernists including Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, and Al Hirt, becoming one of the most respected pianists in jazz. Though he has recorded almost twenty of his own albums, and was featured on many discs with such musicians as David “Fathead” Newman, Eddie Harris, Marcus Roberts, and Courtney Pine, he shunned the spotlight to focus on teaching.

As a leading educator at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of Louisiana, Ellis has influenced the careers of countless musicians, including Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., and Nicholas Payton; as well as his four musician sons: Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason. In May, 2007, Marsalis received an honorary doctorate from Tulane University for his contributions to jazz and musical education.

On December 7, 2008, Ellis Marsalis was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

Through the generosity of South Motors and the National Endowment for the Arts we are proud to announce that four of the artists will participate in a special educational initiative we call South Motors Gen-Next Jam. Nestor Torres, Brian Lynch, Ellis Marsalis and Spyro Gyra will mentor gifted students from the New World School of the Arts High School under the direction of Jim Gasior. A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics, residencies and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. His talents have been recognized by top placing in the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls (#3 Trumpet 2011 Critics Poll); highly rated reviews for his work in Downbeat, Jazziz and Jazz Times; 2005 and 2007 Grammy award nominations, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet The Composer.

Special Guest vocalist Nicole Yarling’s musical excursions have brought about stints with Dizzy Gillespie and three years on tour as a featured soloist with Jimmy Buffet. She also participated on Buffet’s platinum-selling CD, Fruit Cakes, and then went on to do eight worldwide tours with her own project, Little Nicky and the Slicks.

Alan began his career on Broadway at the age of 12 in the original Broadway cast of Oliver and worked extensively in stage, film and TV; some of the productions include The King and I, The Pawnbroker, The Pursuit of Happiness and The Patty Duke Show. After graduating from college, Alan was cast in the original Broadway production of Grease where he created the roles of Teen Angel and Johnny Casino. While still performing in Grease, Alan met Janis Siegel, Tim Hauser and Laurel Masse’ and together formed “The Manhattan Transfer”. The Manhattan Transfer has recorded over thirty albums, were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and have received ten Grammy Awards. Known for their eclectic range of singing, they were the first group to ever receive two Grammys in both jazz and pop categories. Their album, Vocalese, received twelve Grammy nominations of including Best Male jazz vocalist for his rendition of “I Remember Clifford.” Vocalese won three Grammy Awards that year.
