Mexican-American composer Nathan Felix will present his immersive opera titled Mirrors at the The Bass Museum of Art (2100 Collins Ave) in Miami on Thursday May 15th at 7:00pm for Third Thursday. Mirrors is inspired by their exhibition, Performing Perspectives: A Collection in Dialogue.

The narrative for the immersive opera follows two immigrant nurses who struggle with new identity and cultural challenges in the USA. The women worry if their future children and grandchildren will face the discrimination they endured. Audience members are encouraged to follow the opera singers as they sing and weave through the museum galleries to tell this story. The cast features local singers and musicians from Miami and the surrounding region including Yingxi Li (soprano), Mark Cotton (baritone), Madison Marie McIntosh (mezzo-soprano), and Pedro Carreras (tenor). The conductor for the opera is Felix Jarrar and the string ensemble consists of Naeun Ju on violin, Angie Bolivar on viola and Natalie Van Winkle on cello.

Felix is known for his guerilla-style approach in presenting classical music in unconventional spaces and his immersive opera is no exception, with a performance utilizing space, movement, and acoustics to activate the Bass Museum of Art in a way that has yet to be explored. The idea behind Felix’s immersive opera is similar to a flash mob as it revolves around blurring the line between performer and audience by having musical performers move amongst the audience as they perform a cohesive musical composition. The audience is encouraged to follow the narrative of the piece which entails following the soloists but they are ultimately given agency to explore based on feeling, sight and soundscape.

Revel in the mystery and magnificence of Mozart’s Requiem as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) presents its premiere of the composer’s final moving masterpiece and his Symphony No. 40 in G minor! Led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso and featuring Katherine Henly, soprano; Maggie Reneé, mezzo-soprano; Norman Shankle tenor; Neil Nelson, bass-baritone and the South Florida Symphony Chorus, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, at New World Center in Miami Beach. A pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason will take place 30 minutes before the show at New World Center featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the work and composer.

Mozart’s Requiem is one of the most iconic classical compositions ever, with the “Lacrimosa” movement standing out as one of classical music’s most popular movements. Together, Requiem and “Lacrimosa” have approximately one billion views on YouTube and on Spotify, “Lacrimosa” alone has garnered over 91 million streams. The work’s profound emotional depth has led to its inclusion in various films and adaptations by contemporary artists, including Come and See (1985), The Big Lebowski (1998), Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021).

Enveloped in intrigue, the 1791 piece was left unfinished at Mozart’s untimely death, sparking rumors and legends about its creation and completion. Characterized by its sorrowful yet transcendent melodies, powerful choral passages, and orchestral depth, the haunting beauty and emotional intensity of Mozart’s Requiem Mass, coupled with the enigma of its origins, have captivated listeners for centuries, solidifying its place as a masterwork that transcends time and continues to inspire both reverence and curiosity.

His ever-popular Symphony No. 40 in G minor cements Mozart’s place as one of music’s greatest innovators. Daring, evocative, and dripping with emotion, it beautifully exemplifies his prodigious status.

SFSO will end its powerful 27th season honoring Icons & Rebels with a dazzling finale on April 10 featuring two celebrated works from Prokofiev and Bruckner.

From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. This season’s popular collaborations included performances of ARRIVAL From Sweden: The Music of ABBA and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, featuring the iconic film screened live with audio and musical accompaniment.

Miami Beach, Florida, 33139

Cost: Tickets start at $25

Celebrate love in all its dramatic, poetic, erotic, scandalous and insatiable forms as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) presents an adventurous Valentine’s Day program featuring three orchestra premieres, headlined by the return of R. Strauss’ Don Juan. Led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso and featuring soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra, the concert will take place on Saturday, February 15, at New World Center in Miami Beach.

Don Juan is a swashbuckling escapade that both scandalized and delighted audiences with its eroticism and ultra-modern style when it premiered in 1889, cementing Richard Strauss’ (1864-1949) fame as the genius of his generation, making him a favorite among musical modernists. Meanwhile, his Four Last Songs, a SFSO premiere featuring soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra, is a touchingly beautiful and serene masterpiece, bidding farewell to an illustrious career.

Top Prize Winner of the 2018 Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition Wagner Division, soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra has garnered major attention for her work on the operatic and concert stage. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2005 as a soloist in Brahms’ Requiem with The Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of the late James DePreist, her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2014 as “First Lady” in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, singing all nine performances of the opera, three of which were Sirius XM Satellite Broadcasts and David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center debut as a soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the National Chorale. In 2018, she made her debut with the Orquesta Filarmónica del Estado de Chihuahua in Mexico in a solo concert of arias from Il Trovatore, Nabucco, Tannhäuser, and Turandot. Ms. Shoremount-Obra made her European Operatic debut in 2004 as “Ifigenia” in Handel’s Oreste at the Spoleto Festival, Italy. She has performed numerous operatic roles with a variety of operas and performance groups including Opera Grand Rapids, The American Symphony Orchestra, the LA Philharmonic, Grand Harmonie in Princeton, NJ, Odyssey Opera of Boston, Maryland Opera in Baltimore, New York Philharmonic and more. A champion of new music, Shoremount-Obra has premiered/collaborated with some of today’s most popular and notable composers including Tarik O’Regan, Dan Visconti, John Zorn, and Paola Prestini. She is a 2004 New York Regional Winner and National Semi-Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She has also won numerous awards from other organizations, including the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation and has since been supported with supplemental grants from the same foundation. She is the 2016 winner of the Ursula Springer Award from the Wagner Society of New York and together with pianist Christopher Cooley, the 2019 Second Prize Winner in the Joy In Singing International Art Song Competition.

The program also features SFSO’s premiere of Austrian composer Johann Strauss II’s (1825-1899) The Blue Danube, the world’s most famous waltz. Originally written as a choral piece for the Vienna Men’s Choral Association, Strauss adapted it for orchestra soon after it debuted. Epitomizing the symphonic richness and variety of Strauss’s dance music, it ultimately earned him acclaim as the “waltz king,” and has become the best-known of his many dance pieces.

SFSO’s premiere of Hector Berlioz’s (1803-1869) tumultuous “King Lear Overture” (Le roi Lear), perhaps his grandest, most dramatic and atmospheric overture, recounts the dark Shakespearean tragedy of man and a kingdom divided by love and politics.

Now in its 27th season celebrating Icons & Rebels, SFSO invites audiences to tantalizing upcoming works by Mozart, Berlioz, Prokofiev and Bruckner.

Tickets for this Masterworks III program are on sale now beginning at $25. South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Its Premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide

New World Center

Miami Beach, Florida, 33139

Cost: $25 – $95

Continuing with its thrilling Icons & Rebels Masterworks season, South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) is proud to present its premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s satirical masterpiece Candide on Tuesday, January 14, at New World Center in Miami Beach. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. A pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason will take place 30 minutes before the show at the New World Center featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the work and composer.

Led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso, this semi-staged concert version of Candide follows in the manner of Lonny Price’s 2004 production for the New York Philharmonic, made popular through the PBS series “Great Performances.” Bernstein’s acclaimed masterpiece is played out with the orchestra, minimal sets and costumes, a dynamic cast of actor-vocalists featuring David Walton (Candide); Chelsea Lehnea (Cunegonde); Jason Zacher (Dr. Pangloss/Voltaire); Alissa Anderson (The Old Lady), Lovell Rose (Maximilian), and the South Florida Symphony Chorus performing all together on stage. Dan Wallace Miller provides stage direction.

Experience Candide’s riotous journey as he embarks on a whirlwind adventure teeming with humor, unexpected twists, and profound philosophical reflections. Bernstein’s iconic music, adapted from Voltaire’s famed Enlightenment-era novella, sets the backdrop for an unforgettable evening filled with laughter and existential musings. An equal opportunity offender, Candide spares no one. Everything and everyone is fair game in this irreverent satire.

From the over-the-top heights of Cunegonde’s “Glitter and Be Gay” and the rarely heard comedic duet “We Are Women” to the stirring depths of Candide’s introspective ponderings, audiences will enjoy a provocative perspective on life’s absurdities and the enduring pursuit of optimism.

Now in its 27th season, SFSO invites audiences to a tantalizing season featuring upcoming works by Mozart, Strauss, Berlioz, Prokofiev and Bruckner. The concerts will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Key West.

Tickets for Candide are on sale now beginning at $25. Buy tickets online at southfloridasymphony.org; by phone at (305) 673-3331; or in-person at the New World Center Box Office.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents “100 Years of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue,” Prokofiev & Elgar 11/16/24

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents “100 Years of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue,” Prokofiev & Elgar
Saturday, 11/16/2024-, 07:30 pm-09:30 pm
New World Center
500 17th Street,
Miami Beach, Florida, 33139
Website
Cost: $25 – $95

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by the award-winning Sebrina María Alfonso, will launch its riveting 2024-25 Icons & Rebels Masterworks season with “100 Years of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue,” an anniversary tribute to one of popular culture’s most beloved masterpieces, featuring acclaimed pianist Benjamin Hochman, the orchestra premiere of Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges Suite and Elgar’s Symphony No. 1. The program will take place on Saturday, November 16, at 7:30 p.m., at New World Center (500 17th St., Miami Beach).

Celebrating 100 years of Rhapsody in Blue, George Gershwin shocked critics who did not know how to process the unconventional work when it debuted in 1924. Gershwin’s melding of American jazz and classical music broke boundaries and shattered norms. Today, he is revered as one of the greatest American composers of all time. Acclaimed pianist Benjamin Hochman lends his talents to the masterpiece.

In all roles, from orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber musician to conductor, Benjamin Hochman regards music as vital and essential. At 24, he debuted as a soloist with the Israel Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall conducted by Pinchas Zukerman. Orchestral appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Chicago and Pittsburgh Symphonies, and Prague Philharmonia soon followed. A winner of Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Career Grant, Hochman has performed at venues and festivals across the globe, including the Philharmonie in Berlin, Vienna Konzerthaus, the Kennedy Center in Washington, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Germany’s Klavierfestival Ruhr, and Lucerne and Verbier festivals in Switzerland. Despite a medical setback in 2015 affecting his left hand, he pursued a conductor’s role, studying with Alan Gilbert at Juilliard where he received the Bruno Walter Scholarship and the Charles Schiff Award. He created the Roosevelt Island Orchestra, consisting of some of New York’s finest orchestral and chamber musicians alongside promising young talent from top conservatories. In 2018, fully recovered, he returned to the piano. Hochman’s recent highlights include conducting the Szeged Philharmonic in Hungary and the Orlando Philharmonic in Florida. He also appeared as a piano soloist in Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Rheinische Staatsphilharmonie conducted by Benjamin Shwartz in Germany. His chamber music collaborations have taken him to Berlin, Budapest, Vancouver, Boston, Seattle, Dallas, Charlottesville, The Clark in Massachusetts, and Brown University. He curates the Kurtág Festival at Bard College New York. His new classical album, Resonance, will be released by Avie Records on Nov. 1.

Sergei Prokofiev, unorthodox and inventive, is known for his neo-classical, modernist approach. His The Love for Three Oranges Suite, taken from his comedic opera, is a whimsical musical jaunt about a cursed prince who is forced to journey to distant lands in search of three rather large oranges, each containing a princess. Will the affable prince break the curse and find his ‘main squeeze’ or run out of juice along the way?

A symphony in A-flat major? Quite rare indeed. Sir Edward Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 stands out as a remarkable exception in this regard. As a violinist, Elgar understood the challenges of playing in A-flat, yet that’s what he boldly composed in his first symphony, which beautifully explores the universal human experiences of love and hope.

Now in its 27th season, SFSO invites audiences to a tantalizing season featuring upcoming works by Mozart, Strauss and Berlioz, plus a glorious Handel’s Messiah performance and an eagerly anticipated orchestra premiere of Bernstein’s satirical masterpiece Candide. The concerts will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Key West.

From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. This season’s popular collaborations include performances of ARRIVAL From Sweden: The Music of ABBA and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, featuring the iconic film screened live with audio and musical accompaniment on October 26 at Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets are on sale now beginning at $25 for the November 16 concert. Buy tickets online at southfloridasymphony.org; by phone at (305) 673-3331; and in person at the New World Center Box Office. Discounted season subscriptions, saving 20% off single ticket prices, may be purchased by visiting southfloridasymphony.org/2024-25-season or by phone at (954) 522-8445 (for Miami Season Subscriptions). Entrepreneur Giulia Carniato first opened P.Pole in Coral Gables in 2018. The 25-year-old has put a vibrant, Gen-Z spin on the classic pizzeria: at her street-art-filled P.Pole locations in Miami, including a flagship in South Beach, where she ditches the traditional pizza oven for a fun take on the world’s favorite dish. Here, each skateboard-shaped pizza is completely bespoke. Customers choose their own dough—which can be made with chia seeds—and unique toppings such as gorgonzola, ricotta, jalapeños, and artichokes. And pizzas are each baked within a few minutes.

P.Pole has locations in Miami River, Hallandale Beach, South Beach, and Coral Gables.
