Drunk driving deaths have increased by 31% over the past decade with someone being killed or injured in a drunk driving crash every 78 seconds. Two out of three people will be impacted by drunk driving in their lifetime. Drunk driving is a 100 percent preventable crime, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)’s goal is to end impaired driving.

In the ongoing fight against drunk driving and drugged driving, MADD Southeast Florida will host the 14th Annual UKG & Salah Foundation Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K presented by the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County on Sunday, April 27. Thousands of walkers, runners, strollers, wheelchair athletes, and supporters of all ages will come together in downtown Fort Lauderdale to raise awareness and funds to end impaired driving for good. The in-person race will start near Huizenga Plaza at 7:30 a.m., or supporters can also participate in a virtual option.

Festivities will include children’s activities, an awards ceremony, live musical performances, and vendor/educational booths. The event will be attended by dignitaries including Walk Like MADD Fort Lauderdale Founder and Honorary Chairperson Heather Geronemus; Honorary Chairperson Colonel Nichole Anderson, Undersheriff of Broward Sheriff’s Office; Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony; Sgt. Ryan Clifton from Broward Sheriff’s Office; Sgt. Trevor Thomas from Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s DUI Unit; and Lt. Indiana Miranda from Florida Highway Patrol.

Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K is a community-driven 5K that raises awareness about drunk and drugged driving and underage drinking while uniting community members around MADD’s mission. Since it was established in 2011, Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K has raised nearly $4 million that stays in the South Florida community to save lives and support victims of drunk driving, making it the most successful grassroots fundraiser in the history of MADD. Every dollar donated remains in South Florida to provide victim services and prevention education at no cost.

MADD is committed to leading prevention efforts with young adults, collaborating with law enforcement to keep roads safe from impaired drivers, as well as advocating for stricter sentencing and stronger laws, including the HALT Act that mandates anti-drunk driving technology in every new car. MADD continues to provide support services to victims and survivors of impaired driving at no charge through victim services specialists and the 24-Hour Victim Help Line.

Continuing with its thrilling Icons & Rebels Masterworks season, South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) is proud to present its premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s satirical masterpiece Candide at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

School is out, but the Museum of Discovery and Science’s (MODS) Camp STEAMology: Enchanted Forest: Myths & Legends is in!

Come join MODS for a week of magical refuge while you build an enchanted tree house. Get transported to the land of fairies, gnomes, trolls, dragons, unicorns, and other magical creatures! Create miniature worlds, fairy tales, art, costumes, and stories.

Give your child a SCIENTASTIC STEM experience at MODS’ camp program presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. At Camp STEAMology, we’ve crafted the ultimate age-appropriate camp adventure, providing campers with interactive exploration and hands-on learning opportunities in the coolest camp environment you can imagine. It’s not just camp; it’s a journey into the exciting world of STEAM that they’ll never forget!

South Florida’s award-winning attraction features 150,000 square feet of dynamic science exhibits, an outdoor science park, a live animal collection, a rotating schedule of science shows, learning labs, café, store and a grand atrium featuring the Great Gravity Clock, a 52-foot-tall kinetic energy sculpture; the largest clock in Florida. The showpiece of the museum since 1993, this unique timepiece is one of only three in the world.

The YMCA of South Florida, Children’s Services Council of Broward County, School Board of Broward County, HandsOn South Florida, Soles4Souls, City of Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, and volunteers from other companies and nonprofit organizations are committed to supporting K-12 education in South Florida and will provide free backpacks, school supplies, underwear and shoes to students in K through 12 students in Broward County.

Each child must be present and will receive one backpack filled with school supplies and other goodies. Families also can take advantage of free immunizations and apply for Florida Kidcare and free and reduced school meals.

Immunizations are for families without medical insurance. To make an appointment, call 954-771-5245. A copy of the child’s immunization record, COVID-19 vaccination card, parent’s photo ID (valid driver’s license or passport), and proof of address (lease, utility bill, etc.) is required.

The LOOP invites the community and their furry companions to the Movies by Moonlight “Dog Days of Summer” series. Locals and visitors of all ages are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a favorite movie date to the main lawn at Las Olas Oceanside Park. Come early to dine at one of Fort Lauderdale Beach’s restaurants, shop The MKT starting at 5 p.m., or bring a picnic for a dinner and a movie experience under the stars. After a series of back-and-forth, the dog and the kid finally connect with permission from the dog’s owner. “Can I Pet That Dog?” and “So, You Want to be an Athlete” from Bryant’s children’s book series will be available for purchase.

Bryant is a multi-talented individual who plays as a Defensive End in the NFL and is in the captivating world of literature. With Florida leading the nation in childhood drownings, the YMCA of South Florida reaffirms its commitment to water safety and drowning prevention through its signature event, “Swim for Jenny.” This week-long program offers free swim lessons to children and adults of all ages across South Florida, aiming to mitigate the risk of drowning and foster a culture of aquatic safety.

This year, “Swim for Jenny” will be held March 25-29 at YMCA of South Florida locations in Fort Lauderdale (L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center), Hallandale, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines and Weston.

Last year alone, 97 fatal drownings were reported in Florida. For every fatal drowning, five more nonfatal drownings require hospitalization and medical support, often leaving long-term impacts on victims.

The event started in 2013 and honors the memory of a young girl named Jenny, who drowned in 2011 because she didn’t know how to swim. Since the inception of “Swim for Jenny,” more than 18,000 people have participated with more than 150,000 swim lessons provided.

Drowning is the leading cause of death among children 1-4 years old, underscoring the urgent need for accessible swim instruction. South Florida is surrounded by water, and swim lessons are the difference between life and death. Formal swim lessons reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%.
