Bayside Marketplace Celebrates 25 Years in Downtown
Saturday, April 14, Beginning at 11 a.m.
Bayside
downtown Miami
401 Biscayne Blvd., R106
Miami, Florida 33132.

While it may be a bit premature to finalize championship celebration plans for this year’s Miami Heat season, another block party is soon to happen in Downtown. On Saturday, April 14, Bayside Marketplace will kick off its 25th anniversary with family activities, food, and wine tastings, music and dance performances, prizes and even a fireworks show.

Beginning at 11 a.m. with a special presentation led by City of Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado, the landmark retail center will award an official proclamation and a key to the City to 13 of its original tenants when the retail center opened in 1987. Shortly after, the Honorable Commissioner Marc Sarnoff will assist Bayside Marketplace in presenting a check of $330,000 to the Miami Bayside Foundation – an organization established in 1988 to advance economic development in the City of Miami through the support of minority businesses.

Continuing with its “Fete de Soleil” (Celebration under the Sun) theme, Bayside Marketplace will feature “Windows of the World” – a series of dance, theatre, and musical performances at different stage locations. Highlighting international cultures, artistic groups such as the youth dance troop from Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, Balet de danzas Bolivia Magica and Folklore San Sebastian de Nicaragua will be featured among many others. There will also be a special musical tribute to all the Parrot Heads.

Children visiting Bayside can enjoy the carousel, train and pony rides free from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will also be clown, face painting, and balloons in Banyan Park. Making special appearances throughout the day are Bayside neighbors Bernie and the Miami Heat Dancers, as well as The Extreme Team. Appearances by more local icons are soon to be announced.

Visitors are invited to tour the various businesses throughout the center to taste local fare, redeem discounts, and enter contests for prizes. Many will be eligible for several great drawings including Miami Heat game tickets for two, dinner reservations, free parking and more.

Bringing the night to a close, guests can catch a glimpse of a boat parade featuring many of the original 1987 boat captains from some of center’s top floors, while a thrilling fireworks show lights up the marina skyline at 9 p.m.

The Bayside Marketplace 25th Anniversary Celebration is free and open to the public. Giving visitors a luxury shopping and entertainment experience while dazzling guests with breathtaking views, Bayside hosts more than 140 shops and restaurants, including familiar chains and local Latin cuisine. Volvo Ocean Race North American Stopover 5/6/12

Volvo Ocean Race: Downtown Miami Race Village
Sunday May 6th- Sunday May 20th, 2012
Bicentennial Park
1075 Biscayne Blvd
Miami, FL, 33132
www.volvooceanracemiami.org
Facebook Fan Page

The globally recognized extreme sailing race around the world, Volvo Ocean Race is narrowing in on Miami. The worldwide sporting event will arrive in Miami, May 6th, for the only North American stopover. After traveling from Itajai, Brazil and a journey that has consisted since November of monsoon like conditions and eating only freeze dried foods, sailors will be able to take in the beauty and culture of South Florida. The race features 6 –70 foot sailing yachts which are all expected to parade through the waterways of the Port of Miami to their destination at the Downtown Miami Race Village in Bicentennial Park. The teams in the 2011-2012 Volvo Ocean Race are PUMA Ocean Racing powered by Berg, Groupama, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, Team Sanya, Team Telefónica, and Camper with Emirates Team New Zealand.

Miami will host the first ever 14-day festival filled with cultural arts, music, food and interactivity. Over 200,000 attendees are expected from May 6th-20th for this global “Super Bowl” sailing event.

The events at Bicentennial Park include: Paddle boarding with PUMA, The Academy and Try Sailing Experience, Youth Opti-National Championships; a cardboard canoe race; Antique & Classic Auto and Boat Show; the largest Miami Beach cleanup with Volvo North America, Puma and the local community; VIP opportunities; Live music performances; Special Mother’s Day festivities on May 13th; In Port Race, Pro-Am Race; meet and greet with the teams; food; drinks; and arts- to name a few.

The only 501 (c) 3 stopover, Volvo Ocean Race Miami has developed a legacy showcase whose mission is to foster collaboration amongst non-profit organizations with similar missions of surrounding water and marine life conservation initiatives. To promote this legacy Volvo Ocean Race in Miami has partnered with the Big Blue & You to provide an educational experience for children in South Florida who visit the race village on pre-determined dates. The Miami-Dade Public Schools and select private schools have decided to help facilitate the organization of local students to visit the site as planned field trips. The legacy’s main goal will be to inspire participating youth to understand the importance of water (both fresh and salt) in our daily lives and how they can be involved in protecting this precious resource. Other contributing foundations include, Shake-A-Leg, Biscayne Nature Center, The Reclamation Project, ECOMB, UM/RSMAS and Fertile Earth Foundation to name a few.
Volvo Ocean Race Downtown Miami Race Village will take place May 6-20 in Bicentennial Park.

The Volvo Ocean Race Downtown Miami Race Village is a large scale production and 14-day event taking place in Bicentennial Park. Spanning over 27 acres overlooking the bay, the village will provide tourists and the local South Florida community a place to “Sea and be Seen” with an international and interactive race village that will showcase cultural arts, music entertainment, food, and more. Over 200,000 attendees are expected from May 6-20, as Miami is the only North American stopover of this global sailing event.

With a rich history of sailing in the South Florida community and home to the U.S. Sailing Center, the Volvo Ocean Race committee was confident that the City of Miami would be the ideal North American stopover. Downtown Miami Village will consist of sailing and extreme water sports activities, educational programs for children of all ages, interactive pavilions, a 3-D Marine Cinema featuring the global race, music entertainment and wrap-around events. During the 14-day stopover the 6 professional race teams will gather points during the In-Port Race that counts toward the overall leader board and a Pro-Am race putting sponsors with the professionals. In addition, the festival will feature wakeboarding, water sports exhibitions, community cardboard canoe race, a classic steamboat race, Optimist Class Nationals, food, drinks, a Gala and more.

The pinnacle of New World School of the Arts 25th anniversary celebration will be the acclaimed Rising Stars Showcase, a professional exhibition and performance, showcases the remarkable talent of high school and college students from New World School of the Arts, Florida’s premier arts institution. This Broadway-style extravaganza is an energy-packed, one-of-a-kind performance that will undoubtedly captivate the audience with exhilarating works of art, and enthralling dance, music, and theater.
Rising Stars Visual Arts Exhibition Showcase

Sponsored by Bank of America, The Rising Stars performing arts showcase will highlight the talents of its high school and college students in both the performing and visual arts. The three-part celebration launches with an art exhibition focused on the theme black and white. The artwork, specifically curated for Rising Stars, includes creations by both high school and college students. The New World Gallery show is followed by a performance of dance, music and theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts.

The performing arts lineup includes excerpts from the musicals Spring Awakening by Steven Sater, and Jeffrey Lane’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels presented by the Theater division. The NWSA dancers will delight the audience with Jazzapaloosa, performed by a troupe of 11 dancers as well as a special presentation of Martha Graham’s Prelude to Action. An excerpt of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Symphonic Dance No. 3 Fiesta by Clifton Williams will round off the Rising Stars performance.

The evening celebration will continue with a 25th Anniversary Party at the New World Dance Theater immediately following the performance. Guests will have an opportunity to mingle and continue the merriment during the 25th Anniversary Party to recognize the artistic and academic achievements of NWSA students, alumni, administration and staff during the more than two decades the school has existed.

The NWSA Rising Stars Alumnus Award is presented each year to a high school or college graduate from New World School of the Arts, who is successfully contributing to his or her art form. In selecting candidates for this prestigious recognition, the NWSA administration and deans of the four arts strands convene and evaluate each nominee’s artistic achievements, as well as their growth and development as artists. One alumnus is then selected to represent one of the divisions. Tarell Alvin McCraney, distinguished international playwright and NWSA 1999 alum, will take center stage as he comes back to his alma mater to receive this honor from the hands of his former dean, Patrice Bailey.

McCraney attended New World School of the Arts High School receiving the exemplary artist award and the Dean’s Award in Theater. He holds a BFA in acting from DePaul University and is a May 2007 graduate of the Yale School of Drama’s playwriting program, headed by Richard Nelson, where he received the Cole Porter Playwriting Award upon graduation. He is the Royal Shakespeare Company’s international writer in residence, the 2009 Hodder Fellow at Princeton University, and the recipient of the 2007 Paula Vogel Playwriting Award and the 2007 Whiting Award. He is currently under commission at Manhattan Theatre Club and Berkeley Repertory Theatre and is a member of New Dramatists and Teo Castellanos/D-Projects in Miami. In April 2010, McCraney became the 43rd member of the Steppenwolf Theatre.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, New World School of the Arts was conceived in 1984 when the Florida State Legislature established the institution to provide artistically talented high school and college students the means to achieve both an academic education and artistic training. In September 1986, NWSA opened its doors to students in grades ten through twelve and in 1987 admitted the first class of college BFA students. NWSA’s audition-based programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance, Music, Theater and Art & Design. NWSA offers the high school diploma the AA college degree as well as a four-year BFA or BM degrees.

New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts. It is an educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida.

Martirio in Concert 4/7/12

Martirio in Concert
Saturday, April 7th at 8.30 PM
Miami-Dade County Auditorium

Miami.

Martirio, the Spanish singer who reinvented popular Spanish music, comes back to Miami after four years to celebrates 25 years on stage. Presented by FUNDarte and MEGA TV, Martirio invites us to join her celebration with RE-CORDAR, a unique concert to remember her best songs, which will take place on Saturday, April 7th at 8.30 PM at the Miami- Dade County Auditorium (2901 West Flagler St., Miami).

Martirio has occupied a unique place in the world of Spanish music, and world music overall; she has taken ownership over the expression of heartbreak and female sensuality so common to the copla, and has reinvigorated it with a new, emancipated energy and soulfulness. “With her dark sunglasses and spired peineta (the ornamental comb worn by flamenco singers), she’s created a semi-satiric princess-of-darkness persona that isn’t hard for outsiders to understand.” observed The New York Times, and reviewed her performances as completely unique in their ability to bewitch audiences with her depth of expression, but refreshing in their accessibility—even to non-Spanish speakers.

RE-CORDAR is an intimate concert, almost a Cabaret, in which Martirios´s voice will be accompained by the guitarist Pepe Rodríguez and the pianist Jesús Lavilla. In Martirio´s own words, RE-CORDAR is “to share again those songs that remain in her memories and heart. These songs have walked by my side for 25 years of research and love of popular music, which I have put all together inside a copla, bolero, tango, jazz, flamenco, and tumbao…”.

Her enigmatic and sophisticated image, wearing combs or peinetas and sunglasses, is the calling card of this living vocal artist, always curious, undoubtedly modern and an avant-garde.

For 25 years, Martirio has reinvented the copla, a Spanish traditional music genre, bestowing upon it with the universality that it deserves and freeing it from any bondage of the past. She has dared all styles: jazz, bossa nova, tango, flamenco, bolero, pop, rock and even with the tradicional Sevillanas; an audacity that she has shared with other contemporaries such as Chano Domínguez, Kiko Veneno, Vicente Amigo, Lila Downs, Franco Battiato, Compay Segundo and Chucho Valdes.

Martirio has been nominated for a Latin Grammy (Best 2002 Flamenco Album for “Mucho corazón”) and has received two awards from the Academy of Spanish Music: Best Spanish album of 2005 for “Acoplados” and Best Fusion Album 2007 for “Primavera en NY “.
FUNDarte (www.fundarte.us) is a multidisciplinary non-profit organization dedicated to producing, presenting, and promoting music, theater, dance, film and visual arts that speak to Miami’s diverse cultures.

Annette Recommends Odysseo

Due to an overwhelming reception by the South Florida community and strong ticket sales, Cavalia’s new production, “Odysseo,” announced that a third additional week will be added to the limited engagement of the production at Bicentennial Park, which will extend its stay in Miami until March 18, 2012.

After an extended standing ovation on opening night, Miami Herald’s Howard Cohen commented about the show “If Walt Disney were still alive, he might create a show as magical as Cavalia’s new ‘Odysseo.’ But it wouldn’t be better than the wonderful world mastermind Normand Latourelle has created under his White Big Top.” Nathalie Rodriguez of WMIA-FM, 98.3, describes the show as “One word split in two: awe-some! It’s artistic & majestical, but most importantly not to be missed!” Soul of Miami raved “The show is truly amazing. Between the astounding horsemanship and acrobatics combined with the awesome scenery and visual effects, this show will leave you wanting to see more. This is one show you will not want to miss.”

“We are delighted to finally be back in Miami,” expressed Normand Latourelle, founder and artistic director of Cavalia. “Our first show was received wonderfully by the South Florida community two years ago, but the reception of our new production, ‘Odysseo,’ has been overwhelmingly wonderful. In an effort to please the public, we will extend the run to please the high demand.”

TICKETS
For its exclusive run in Miami, Odysseo will be presented under the White Big Top at Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami. Tickets are on sale now at the introductory price of $59.50 to $109.50 + applicable fees for regular tickets. Special pricing is also available for children (2-12), juniors (13-17), and senior citizens (65+). For ticket information, please visit www.cavalia.net or call 1-866-999-8111.

SHOWTIMES

Headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Cavalia Inc. operates two separate touring shows, Cavalia and Odysseo, both of which marry the equestrian arts, stage arts and high-tech theatrical effects at never-before-seen levels. Cavalia, seen by some 3.5 million people across North America and Europe since its 2003 debut, celebrates the relationship between humans and horses by loosely recounting the evolution of this bond. Odysseo, which premiered in autumn 2011, takes the next step, leading viewers on a journey through some of the breathtaking landscapes horses have helped humans discover around the globe. Annette Recommends Odysseo by Cavalia under the White Big Top at Bicentennial Park

We went to opening night of Odysseo presented by Cavalia and The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts  under the White Big Top at Bicentennial Park in downtown on Wednesday, February 29, 2012. All I have to say is the show is truly amazing, between the astounding horsemanship and acrobatics combined with the awesome scenery and visual effects, this show will leave you wanting to see more.  This is one show you will not want to miss.

The  show is very serene and breathtaking, from the beautiful horses to the spectacular acrobats.  The staging area is so big, at some points they have over 30 horses and 40 performers on stage and still room for more. They have a carousel they lower and the performance on it will blow your mind…I think they use magic :-). The ending routine will REALLY surprise you. I have never seen anything like that.

Words cannot really describe how amazing this whole show was, you just need to go see it for yourself.

(Unfortunately, we did not get any photos of our own, but below are some stock photos that Cavalia supplied. We purposely omitted photos from the end to keep the surprise.)

Italy’s #1 star has moved beyond his hip-hop start into a big band world/ funk project – an Italian James Brown with a live show that is out-of-control good.Until now, American audiences have had mere glimpses of the brilliant career of Italy’s most famous contemporary artist, the Tuscan singer and songwriter and rapper Lorenzo Cherubini, professionally known as Jovanotti.

Over the past twenty years his recorded and live collaborations with Michael Franti, Ben Harper, The Beastie Boys, Juanes, Carlinhos Brown, Sergio Mendes, and Bono, among other well-known names, have occasionally caught the ear of the adventurous listener. Delivering lyrics in a half-sung, half-spoken style that has something esthetically in common with a downtown reading by a Beat poet, Jovanotti uses the rhythm and the ricochet of consonants and catchy melodic hooks to create songs that are instantly accessible to an international audience.

“At 43, he still rocks the stage like a lanky, garrulous rap star, but Jovanotti now sees his own music as a blend and a refraction of all of his favorite artists, from Run-DMC to Stevie Wonder to Chico Buarque..” – The Village Voice

Kork Wine & Cheese Tuesday Tasting Series continues with a tasting of Castillo de Tabernas, a Spanish olive oil collected in the Tabernas Desert. Its climate is characterized by the highest amount of sunlight per year in Europe, and temperatures remain very stable during the whole olive growing and ripening period.

Castillo de Tabernas’ Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been obtained through a rigorous monitoring and application of Quality Decalogue. The making of this exquisite product with a .01º natural acidity has only been possible by applying exhaustive controls.

The oil originates from totally healthy green olives, which initially made the oil excessively fruity. After allowing for aripening period in our cellars, the Country Estate Olivar del Desierto was able to obtain an oil which still preserves its fruity content but with a mildness necessary to maintain and empower the original flavor of any traditional or modern food.

Announcing Launch of Read to Learn Book Club for 3-Year-Olds
Speakers include David Lawrence, Jr., Modesto Abety-Gutierrez, Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and Mayor Carlos Gimenez

The Children’s Trust will host a Literacy Action Plan Summit to advance the Read to Learn initiative and finalize a community action plan to dramatically increase the number of third graders reading at or above grade level. Currently, one-third of third graders fail to do so at a critical moment in their development when children must shift from learning to read to reading to learn. More than 150 participants are expected to attend.

The Summit will be followed by a news conference announcing the official launch of the FREE Read to Learn Book Club. This is a monthly book club for all 3-year-olds in Miami-Dade County, to be funded and administered by The Children’s Trust, Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership and Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe. Children of this age were selected to expose them to books in the year leading up to pre-kindergarten. Developmentally appropriate books are being specifically selected to grow early literacy skills and encourage families to build home libraries. The book club will begin its first mailing in March, with one free book and a parent guide sent monthly to the child’s home. Parents can register their children for a free book club membership at www.thechildrenstrust.org. Books can be requested in either English or Spanish.

Miami Kidney Walk 2012
February 19, 2012, Registration 8:30 AM, Walk 10:00 AM
Bayfront Park
301 North Biscayne Blvd
Miami FL
www.miamikidneywalk.com

The National Kidney Foundation of Florida invites South Floridians, their friends and families to join in the 2012 Miami Kidney Walk, presented by All-Med Services of Florida, Inc. A fun, non-competitive 5K event that raises funds and helps create awareness to fight kidney disease. With more than 80 walk teams already signed up, excitement is building as the Miami Kidney Walk gets closer to its goal of raising $175,000 to help more than 2 million Floridians suffering from chronic kidney disease.

This year, Dr. Victor Valdes, Medical Director at All-Med Services of Florida and avid advocate in the renal care community in South Florida, serves as Corporate Chairman of the Miami Kidney Walk.

The 2012 Miami Kidney Walk will take place this coming Sunday, February 19th, at Bayfront Park, Downtown Miami. Registration begins at 8:30am; walk begins at 10:00am. The Miami Kidney Walk is sure to create an even greater awareness of kidney disease this year. It is sure to be bigger and better than ever with the appearance of multifaceted entertainer and Hip-Hop artist “David Rush”, as this year’s Miami Kidney Walk Celebrity Chair!

Four years ago David Rush, born David Petterson, was told he was suffering from Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Once diagnosed RUSH was able to take his dialysis “on the road” and tour with renowned hip hop artist Pitbull. “It’s the hardest tat (tattoo) I ever got in my life. The entertainer and Hip-hop artist feels reborn. I wear the scar with so much pride,” “My life has changed. I’m born again.” Says Rush. He praises his half-brother and best friend, Dwaine Haskins, 38, for donating his right kidney to him. He considers November 9, 2010 his second birthday — the day the he underwent his kidney transplant. Fortunately for RUSH, his brother Dwaine a.k.a. “Monsta” was a perfect kidney match.

Rush is currently signed to international Hip Hop star Pitbull’s Mr. 305 imprint, and is the mastermind behind his own 2009 hit remix “Shooting Star” featuring Pitbull, Kevin Rudolf and LMFAO, as well as Pitbull’s popular hit “Go Girl.” Despite suffering from kidney failure and doing dialysis for several hours each week, RUSH joined Pitbull’s 2009 nationwide Rebelution tour, and gained his own fan base along the way. Rush is a strong contemporary example of the investment of dialysis then the success of a kidney transplant each and every time he performs. His diagnosis is prevalent in minority communities and should make a great difference in perceptions of what the miracle of transplant allows one to be able to do.

“We are honored and excited that Rush will spend the day with us and share his heart warming story. We welcome Rush and look forward to sharing in his talent!” said Dr. Victor Valdes, Medical Director of All-Med Services and Corporate Chair for this year’s Walk. Local supporting sponsors, include Fresenius Medical Care, Baptist Health South Florida, Care Vantage and DaVita to name a few. There will also be more entertainers bringing guests a carnival style party, brought to you by Top 1 Entertainment, Japanese Drummers and much, much more. The 2012 Miami Kidney Walk is sure to be a one of a kind and memorable Walk like no other!

The walk will also include a walk processional to spotlight those who are impacted by kidney disease. Last year over 200 Donor Families, Living Donors, transplant Recipients, and those who wait for a transplant walked together to raise awareness about how valuable and precious the Gift of Life is. For more information, call 305-854-5690 or visit www.miamikidneywalk.org.

“After last year’s successful Miami Kidney Walk, we are thrilled at the positive response and growing momentum for this year’s event,” said Dayane Nuñez, South Florida Regional Manager for the National Kidney Foundation of Florida. “Kidney disease is on the rise in the U.S., especially among minority populations. The Walk is a great way to support our many programs to fight kidney disease, promote medical research and encourage organ donation. Plus, it’s great to celebrate life and take part in an inspiring and fun event that will help save lives.”

Join us along with all those who come out in support of our kidney community. Help us reach out to all those who suffer from High Blood Pressure & Diabetes and help make the 2012 Miami Kidney Walk a TRUE SUCCESS!

Many Miami-area businesses are generously supporting the 2012 Miami Kidney Walk, from sponsoring the event to having employees organize and recruit Walk team members. Full list of sponsors is available at www.miamikidneywalk.org.

Robert Cray and Shemekia Copeland

Celebrate Black History Month with music! Jazz Roots brings together two magnificent artists who pay tribute to the roots of blues and soul, but take the music to an inspired new level.

Called “the torchbearer for gritty, Southern-style blues” by The New York Times, Robert Cray—Grammy winner, vocalist and guitar hero—has continually topped the Billboard Charts with his high energy recordings.

Shemekia Copeland, the daughter of the late great Texas blues guitar hero Johnny Copeland, began her career on the blues circuit at the age of 16… She is now recognized as the new lady of the blues. “She was born to belt” says The New York Times, “with a big, bright voice” that rocks the house wherever she performs!

With Alan Reyna on percussion, Alberto Miranda on bass and special guest pianist Dr. Alan Mason, associate professor of music at Barry University, she will perform songs that capture her South American and Jewish roots in a singular, acoustic style. Refreshments include Next@19th’s signature Guava Rugelach Cocktail with L’Chaim Vodka and delectable Guava Rugalach pastries.

“As an arts organization, we think of ‘Moving Jewish Culture Forward’ as a culturally layered experience,” said Jenni Person, Director of Next@19th. “Music is an amazingly universal platform that allows us to combine many genres, and gives the listener the opportunity to create his or her own personal relationship with the sounds that touch them the most.”

On stage for more than 20 years, Czarny has recorded two CDs with Yiddish songs (“Under the White Stars” and “Songs about Songs”), which include both traditional and original compositions. Performing several of her own pieces inspired by Latin American rhythms in Spanish, her rich background as a musician, radio host and music therapist in Buenos Aires and as Music Director at Temple Sinai in Hollywood, FL spotlights the many cultural intersections of South Florida.

Mat Zo The Bipolar EP Tour Miami 3/22/12

Mat Zo Embarks On His Biggest Tour of North America 10-Dates To Coincide with ‘The Bipolar EP’ (Anjunabeats / February 13)

With his diverse four-track ‘The Bipolar EP’ priming itself for release, Anjunabeats rising star Mat Zo is embarking on his biggest tour of North America yet – including dates at San Francisco’s Ruby Skye, Toronto’s Guvernment, Denver’s Beta and Chicago’s Sound Bar. The 10-date tour will come to an end at Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy Miami party on Bayfront Park, site of the Ultra Music Festival, on Thursday, March 22 alongside Above & Beyond, Arty, Boom Jinx and Jaytech [#GroupTherapyMiami].

With Skrillex, Axwell, Radio 1 and MTV Dance all supporting his recent anthem “Mozart” (with Arty), the fast rising Mat Zo returns with an eclectic four-track blast of his innovative talents – each track a distinct dancefloor juggernaut in its own right.

With recent eclectic sets at events like the Bugged Out! Weekender and his drum & bass material as MRZO and MRSA for Hospital Records supported by the likes of Camo & Crooked, Zo is fast asserting himself as unique electronic talent; something ‘The Bipolar EP’ reinforces further by blending influences as varied as Daft Punk, Diplo, Deadmau5 and even classic US house and twisting them into bold big room sounds.

Surging the raw funk of Daft Punk at their punkiest against the deeply musical strains that Zo is renowned for, the lead track “Bipolar” lives up to its name by flitting between clicky grooves, electro synth stabs and subtle melodic waves in devastating dancefloor fashion.

A homage to Mat’s love of classic dance across the 90s and early noughties, “It’s Yours” is as inventive take on Jon Cutler & E-Man’s funky house classic “It’s Yours”. Already a big room anthem from Mat’s recent sets at Bugged Out! Weekender and TATW400 in Beirut, “It’s Yours” builds waves of infectious melodic funk into a climatic drop.

A bridge between the carnival sounds of acts like Diplo and Major Lazer and the stadium filling trance world, “Ring On It” is an experimental bleep and bass-heavy explosion of carnival vibes – built around a subtle but undeniably epic riff.

Named after the world famous cellist, closing track “Yoyo Ma” is a driving melodic tech odyssey that draws influences from Eric Prydz’s most epic Pryda work, big room techno and the classier end of trance.

Celebrating the ‘The Bipolar EP,’ Mat has also released an hour long mix of progressive grooves, quirky mash-ups and the innovative tracks from EP itself.

Mega-Production Odysseo by Cavalia in Miami Opens 2/28/12

Mega-Production Odysseo by Cavalia in Miami Opens

After a successful run in Atlanta, site of its US premiere, Odysseo, the new touring show by renowned production company Cavalia Inc., is already preparing for its Miami run, premiering under the White Big Top February 29 at 8:00 p.m. in Bicentennial Park, two weeks earlier than originally scheduled.

“We have streamlined the massive moving process for our touring show between cities, allowing Miami to experience our all-new show, Odysseo, two weeks earlier than planned,” explained Normand Latourelle, Cavalia Inc.’s founder and artistic director.

In Odysseo, spectators join human and equine artists on a journey through some of the world’s most wondrous landscapes. Cavalia’s new production marries the equestrian arts, stage arts and high-tech theatrical effects at never-before-seen levels. The 80-ton technical grid, as big as that found in the best-equipped permanent theaters in the world, supports lighting, a full-size merry-go-round, and 18 cinema projectors that create high-definition landscape backdrops on screens twice the size of a standard IMAX. These scenes surround the world’s largest touring stage, 27,000 square feet, rendering Odysseo a 5-D mega-production, a feast for the eyes that still succeeds in delivering the spectacular with soul.

“For now,” added Latourelle, “the task is to move Odysseo’s touring village from Atlanta to Miami, no small undertaking. For the horses and artists, it’s time to relax, but for the technical crews it’s full-steam ahead!”

After their final show in Atlanta, Odysseo’s 71 beautiful, highly trained horses will travel in six trailers the 365 miles to their “horse spa” between runs, Peninsula Farm in Ocala, Florida, a world-class equestrian center. Odysseo’s publicist, JD Pelletier, will Tweet and post on Facebook daily about the horses’ journey there and their activities while on vacation.

Depending on their discipline, the horses spend between six months and ten years training to be in the show. But accompanied by their grooms, artist-riders, vet techs, blacksmiths and stable managers, Ocala is really a vacation for these horses – no daily rehearsals, just playtime as they freely roam through fields and get plenty of pampering every day. After their three-week respite they will head to the Odysseo village in Miami’s Bicentennial Park on Thursday, February 23.

Covering an area greater than a football field, Odysseo’s is the world’s biggest touring Big Top, yet in terms of everything from seat size to audience proximity to the action, it feels like a permanent theater. To recreate this engineering marvel in Miami, a crew of 230 workers in Atlanta will load everything onto 110 18-wheel trucks bound for Miami. After five days setting up in Miami, Cavalia will invite media for a first tour inside the White Big Top on Wednesday, February 15. In total, three weeks are required to recreate the entire village, a process that will take 130 Cavalia Inc. employees plus 150 local Miamians working around the clock to be ready for the premiere.

While technical crews are hard at work, many of Odysseo’s onstage artists, hand-picked from eight different countries for their particular expertise, will return to their native lands between cities for a little R&R with their families. The troupe of 11 incredibly powerful Guinean acrobats, who grew up tumbling and flipping on the beach in their spare time, will head back to their African village. The show’s dressage champions will relax in rural France. Quebecois aerialists will snowshoe and ski, then warm themselves around the fire, and other artists will return to Spain, Italy and Ukraine, among other countries. All will be back for rehearsals in Miami before the big premiere at the Odysseo site in Miami’s Bicentennial Park on February 29 – leap day!

Miami, FL 33131

Information Form PDF

Leave A Legacy© hosts some of the nation’s top thought leaders at a Leadership Forum on Social Entrepreneurship, geared to helping local charities explore entrepreneurial strategies to improve their effectiveness and bottom line, from noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 at Akerman Senterfitt, One SE Third Ave., 25th Floor.

The half-day leadership seminar will examine how non-profits can adopt the philosophies of successful social entrepreneurs to transform their organizations and how they serve the community.

Non-profit leaders in South Florida contend the different approach will ensure the success and growth of more community organizations. In the past year, the number of non-profit groups in Florida doubled. Their success is critical to the community’s ability to overcome recent economic challenges.

“About 76% of all revenues generated by non-profits come from program services. This means non-profit leaders should, and in many cases, need to change their approach and adopt entrepreneurial and innovative business strategies to thrive, and even to survive,” said Glenn Kaufhold, chair of Philanthropy Miami, and president of GKollaborative, consultants to non-profits.

The Leadership Forum is part of Leave A Legacy’s Philanthropy Miami, a two-part conference on successful trends and practices in non-profit management. The second part of the conference is planned for Tuesday, March 20 at Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail in Miami. It features two separate tracks: Fundraising Basics, an intensive overview for those new to development and Toolkits, geared to those who have more experience in the field. Toolkits will showcase strategies non-profits can use to increase their donations and the number of ongoing supporters.

Philanthropy Miami is sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; SunTrust Foundations and Endowments Specialty Practice; Baptist Health South Florida Foundation; United Way of Miami-Dade; and Wells Fargo.

Philip Green is a highly respected writer who is recruited by a national magazine to write a series of articles on anti-Semitism in America. He’s not too keen on the series, mostly because he’s not sure how to tackle the subject. Then it dawns on him: if he was to pretend to all and sundry that he was Jewish, he could then experience the degree of racism and prejudice that exists and write his story from that perspective. It takes little time for him to experience bigotry. He soon learns the liberal-minded firm he works for doesn’t hire Jews and that his own secretary changed her name and kept the fact that she is Jewish a secret from everyone. Green soon finds that he won’t be invited to certain parties, that he cannot stay in so-called ‘restricted’ hotels and that his own son is called names in the street. His anger at the way he is treated also affects his relationship with Kathy Lacy… (Drama/Romance)

Photographs of Miami International Art Fair aboard SeaFair on 1/12/12

Miami International Art Fair aboard SeaFair on Thursday, January 12, 2011.   We had a awesome time, the artwork is spectacular and we saw so many people we had not seen in awhile.  Looking forward to going back and seeing it all again.

“The 3rd edition of Miami International Art Fair (MIA), one of America’s most exciting mid-winter contemporary art fairs, will return January 12-16, 2012 with a dynamic ensemble of 28 international galleries representing artist from Europe, Latin America, United States and Asia. The Fair will feature paintings, sculpture, photography, design, fine art glass, video and installations from a bevy of established museum collected artists as well as some of today’s most promising emerging artists.”

MIA is aboard the SeaFair – the 228-foot megayacht venue – docked at 100 Chopin Plaza with a waterside installation and sculpture exhibition in Bayfront Park.

PRESS RELEASE
Miami’s International Art Fair 2012 at Bayfront Park proves a spectacular venue and success
“I’m on top of the world,” remarked exhibiting artist Phil Stapleton after the highly successful Preview of the third Miami International Art Fair – MIA 2012. A sentiment shared by many of the exhibiting galleries that saw significant and early sales.

The third edition of the Fair was relocated aboard SeaFair, America’s Megayacht Venue. The relocation to the 228 foot purpose built exhibition venue, docked at 100 Chopin Plaza at the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami’s Downtown Arts & Entertainment District, was a strategic move by the Fair’s organizing firm International Fine Art Expositions (IFAE).

“MIA has moved to downtown Miami because it is now the cultural and entertainment center of the city. SeaFair’s spectacular $40M exhibition yacht in Bayfront’s Chopin Plaza offers a unique addition to the downtown cultural scene and is an extraordinary fair venue,” remarked Lee Ann Lester, Principal of IFAE. “Offering a convenient and visible waterfront location at Bayfront Park’s Chopin Plaza and convenient self and valet parking, SeaFair will host a number of international cultural events and trade exhibitions throughout the winter season each year,” she continued.

MIA welcomed a total exceeding 10,200 attendees in the four day run, opening to lines every day. Not only were the sheer numbers of the crowds impressive but the quality of attendees as well. Collectors from northern locations such as Singer Island, Jupiter Island, Palm Beach, and Boca Raton as well as the most affluent areas of greater Miami such as Fisher Island, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and Key Biscayne were in attendance. Dealers agreed that SeaFair’s elegance and luxury proved a magnet and new experience for collectors.

“I love it. I think it breaks all the boundaries, breaks all of the traditional formats of an art fair. It gives you a completely different feeling. It’s very informal and at the same time people are very serious about the art,” commented Ramon Cernuda of Cernuda Fine Art.

“It’s a very interesting venue. I like it because it’s very intimate. In a more traditional art fair setting the ceilings are so high, the walkways are so wide, people tend to walk through and miss a lot of things because there’s almost too much. This is a nice venue because it’s intimate and you really can see everything. I like also that they’ve been selective about the galleries. All the galleries that you see here are galleries that are well established with artists that are all very recognizable, so you know what you’re coming to see. You’re coming to see a very high level of work, a very interesting crowd that are all collectors, you don’t have a lot of the “looky-loos”, people that are coming here are all qualified collectors,” said Evan Lurie, Evan Lurie Gallery.

“SeaFair is a beautiful location, the service is great, and it allows galleries to present their work in a very refined environment, so for me that’s very important. It shows off the art the way it should be,” remarked Paco, Butter Gallery.
IFAE has plans to return SeaFair to the popular port and bayside location for an art and design fair in March.

Friday, January 13 @ 6:00pm

Bayfront Park

Downtown Miami

The DWNTWN Miami Concert Series is every second Friday of the month October through April (expect March). The series features a free concert open to the public at Bayfront Park’s Tina Hills Pavilion.

The Miami Downtown Development Authority’s popular DWNTWN Miami Concert Series will now be held year-round, the expanded concert series will continue to host monthly events during the winter months at Bayfront Park’s Tina Hills Pavillion and at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts during the summer.

Join the Miami Downtown Development Authority Friday, January 13 for the best happy hour in town, for the fourth concert in the DWNTWN Concert Series with three local Miami bands Afro Kumbe, Jahfé and ArtOfficial. Food Trucks will be on-site and food and drinks will be available. Concert-goers are also welcome to bring their own blankets, food and drinks.

Afro Kumbe blends traditional Colombian sounds with electronica. It’s an orgy of sound anytime Afro Kumbe throws down a set.

Jahfé’s musical style fuses roots reggae with other genres including rock, dub, soul and R & B, creating a unique blend of organic sounds. The members of Jahfé hail from nations all around the world including Haiti, Spain, Israel, Cuba, Czech Republic and the United States.

ArtOfficial’s one-of-a-kind sound is as inherently ingrained in the group’s core. Since their inception, they’ve been compared to groups like Soulive and The Roots, but theirs is a different brew–an unyielding, unapologetic urban poetry with an unflinching array of jazz melodies that results in some of the most uniquely crafted and sincere hip-hop you’re likely to find–not just in Miami–anywhere.

‘Before They Were Famous: Behind the Lens of William John Kennedy’ – Nearly lost archives of Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana negatives find their fame. Miami resident William John Kennedy reveals 1960s photographs of iconic American pop artists at MIA Fair 2012.

At the age of 81, fine art photographer William John Kennedy began an unprecedented journey and meteoric rise to fame. His recently published archive of negatives from 1963 and 1964, when he befriended and photographed rising stars Andy Warhol and Robert Indiana, was quietly introduced to the public by publisher KIWI Arts Group as a collection of silver gelatin prints at a pop-up gallery in Miami Beach last December. After six stops in major international cities and at SCOPE Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach, the collection finds a new temporary home aboard SeaFair during Miami International Art Fair (January 12 – 16, Booth #312), a five day extravaganza of art and culture situated along the waterfront near Bayfront Park.

The curated, museum-style exhibition dubbed “Before They Were Famous: Behind the Lens of William John Kennedy” introduces the pivotal moments and players who shaped the course of American art in the second half of the 20th century. From Kennedy’s images of the groundbreaking exhibit Americans 1963 at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, curated by the esteemed Dorothy Miller, to the artists with their iconic works—plus never-before-heard 1960s audio conversations between Warhol and artist Ultra Violet—the overall multimedia experience will transport visitors through an important piece of art history.

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of the Red Bull Soundclash at Bayfront Park on 12/31/11

Photographs taken by Anthony Jordon of Red Bull Soundclash at Bayfront Park on Saturday, December 31, 2011.  Ludacris vs. Mike Posner - Red Bull Soundclash was a totally unique clash of sounds, styles and creativity, where two bands did not battle each other, but instead collaborate to create an innovative live music performance.

More than 80,000 people welcomed 2012 with a clash in Miami’s Bayfront Park as Ludacris and Mike Posner took the stage in an unparalleled performance all topped off by a remarkable fireworks display and the rise of the Big Orange. Ludacris opened the show with crowd favorites “Stand Up” and “Move” followed by Mike Posner’s hit “Please Don’t Go,” both performing with an energy that busted through the crowds leaving them cheering for more. Finishing up with a collaboration of the song “Get Back,” Ludacris and Mike Posner both took the stage and began the countdown to 2012.

Red Bull Soundclash is a unique clash of sounds, style and creativity, where two artists with different musical backgrounds collaborate to create an innovative live music performance. In four challenging rounds, the artists were challenged in proving their creativity and live performance skills. DJ Mick Boogie pumped up the crowd with spins and real-time commentary as he led the musical artists and crowd through the following set of rounds:
The Cover: each artist took on their own version of LMFAO’s “I’m In Miami.”
The Takeover: a collaborative round where one artist started playing one of their own tunes then the other took over mid-song to finish it out with their own flair.
The Clash: challenged the versatility of the artists as they adapted their songs to the music genres of DJ Mick Boogie’s choice – reggae, acoustic and dance.
The Wild Card: the final round was all about surprises as each artist brought a special secret guest to the stage to perform with them. This show is all about surprising, exciting and entertaining the crowd, and these two artists did not fail to deliver. Mike Posner nabbed the drum line from the University of Miami to perform “Cooler Than Me,” but the crowd went into a frenzy when Ludacris brought Luther ‘Uncle Luke’ Campbell to the stage to perform “How Low Can You Go.” The rousing performance left fans screaming for more.

Touring the globe since 2007, Red Bull Soundclash has entertained music lovers with incredible match ups including Cee Lo Green/The Ting Tings; Snoop Dogg and the Snoopadelics/Ghostland Observatory; The Roots/Miniature Tigers; Erykah Badu and the Cannabinoids/Shiny Toy Guns; Talib Kweli/Ozomatli; Wale/Tokyo Police Club and many others.

On Wednesday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m., the collaborative will present a screening of Ladino: 500 Years Young at Regal Theaters in South Beach (1120 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach). Following the film at 8:00 p.m., Next@19th (137 NE 19th Street, Miami) turns up the volume at their downtown venue with an exclusively Ladino performance by chanteuse Susana Behar, paying tribute to the music of the film.

Behar will perform energetic sets of Spanish-Judeo tunes, taking viewers on a musical journey under the palms in the center’s outdoor café setting, celebrating the geographical diversity of culture from Spain to the Ottoman Empire.
Born in La Habana to a Cuban/Turkish Sephardic family, Behar grew up listening to her mother’s ‘kantikas’ in Judeo-Spanish and her father’s vibrant Cuban rhythms. After showing interest in music as early as 7 years old, Behar indulged in the Cuban and Jewish cultures of Miami and has participated in many cultural events in addition to private engagements.
