Friends of St. Jude (FOSJ) Miami, the young professionals dedicated to raising awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s mission, and chaired by Jeb Bush Jr., invites the South Florida community to the sixth annual International Dermatology “It’s All About the Kids” event, presented by the Andrés Asion Foundation.

“We are excited to host another successful event, to ensure children battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases have the opportunity to receive the treatment and care they need,” said Jeb Bush Jr., chair of FOSJ. “Thanks to our partners and South Florida’s ongoing support, Friends of St. Jude has been able to raise more than $600,000.00 to benefit thousands of patients; ensuring that none of their families ever receives a bill from St. Jude for their treatment, medicines, travel and lodging costs.”

During the event, guests will have the opportunity to savor an exquisite tasting menu and sip delicious cocktails, donated by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, while enjoying special music performances by The Culture Band and DJ Irie. “It’s All About the Kids” will be hosted by award-winning journalist and anchor of Univision Network’s news-magazine show Primer Impacto Pamela Silva Conde, and co-anchor of “The Morning Show” on Fusion, a new cable network for multi-cultural millennials, Pedro Andrade. This year’s “It’s All About the Kids” presenting sponsor is the Andrés Asion Foundation. “What St. Jude does for the advancement of cancer research is priceless. Giving life changing opportunities to children all over the world!” commented its founder, Andrés Asion.

Silvia Trinidad, from International Dermatology Research, Inc., will be recognized for her unwavering, life-long commitment to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Throughout the years, Silvia has been a relentless advocate in the fight against pediatric cancers worldwide.

“I’m honored to have been selected as this year’s honoree, and applaud St. Jude for their tireless mission to offer all children with cancer and other diseases the care they need to live,” declared Trinidad, who serves as president and research director of said organization. “It’s important for all of us to know, however, that our work doesn’t end here. We must continue to help advance treatment and research that will get us closer to a cancer-free future for our children.”

International Dermatology will serve as the event’s title sponsor for the sixth consecutive year, while the Andres Asion Foundation will serve as the event’s presenting sponsor for the fourth consecutive year. Other event sponsors include: Pollo Campero/The Gutierrez Family, LAAD, Peter Kellner, Erik Fresen, Academica, The Valls Family, Resorts World Miami, Henry Parra, GreenbergTraurig, Car2Go, Cesar and Pamela Conde, Carlton Fields, Garrido Foundation, Sarria Enterprises, INC., Braman Honda, VELU, Promotional Party Sticks, Midtown Residences, Gymboree, Land South Group, Vestcor Foundation, FPL, AmeriKooler, República, MillerCoors, Cutty Sark, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Univision Radio, SocialMiami.com and Miami Magazine.

An exhibition space interested in advancing artistic discourse in Miami. The gallery provides a forum for contemporary art since 2009. Their focus is to invite national and international artists to exhibit and discuss their work along side Miami based artists. Dimensions Variable are a Knight Arts Challenge Grant recipient from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The gallery is a pioneer of the exodus from the Design District and increasingly unaffordable Wynwood to downtown Miami. Since relocating to the downtown Arthouse building last year, Dimensions Variable has continued expanding its brand of conceptually provocative and experimental offerings, drawing not only art lovers but also other local talent to join them in the neighborhood.
Dimensions Variable is run by Adler Guerrier, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova and Frances Trombly.

Miami, the city known for it’s sunny climate, attractive beaches, entertainment, beautiful people and international art fairs, is now getting ready for an inspiring cultural and art filled weekend during Downtown Art Days 2013 (www.dwntwnartdays.com). Celebrated pop artist and city local, Leonardo Hidalgo (www.leonardohidalgo.com) will present his new collection of paintings, Go With a Smile, a series of forty-eight visually striking large format paintings of superheroes, gangsters and icons, with the spotlight on Batman and the Joker. Lou La Vie, the only exotic car rental agency in the world to marry the concept of fine art and supercars, will unveil a unique art car designed by Hidalgo, with the collaboration of Warren Henry Auto Group, on the night of the opening, Friday, September 20, 2013 from 6pm-10pm.

Free and Open to All

In celebration of Miami’s Downtown Art Days, friends and family of Cannonball and The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) gather for a non-athletic, not-so-neighborly game of kickball. To beat the heat, this year we’re throwing in water balloons!

While the teams hustle for the esteemed “best baller on the block” award, the public is invited to give their favorite team an edge by pelting opposing players with water balloons.

Join The Game! This event is free and open to the public. Water balloons will be available for a suggested donation. Rules and regulations will be posted on site.

Perrier will provide complimentary refreshments, while food trucks by Purple People Eatery and Fireman Derek will be on site. In addition, Deferred Archive, the grants and commissions program exhibition at CIFO, will be open for public viewing.

Launched in 2012, Downtown Art Days offers over 125 events and special projects related to art and culture. Art Days has something for everyone from family activities, panel discussions, international exhibitions, bike and walking tours, and more. For event details CLICK HERE.

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 2002 by Ella Fontanals Cisneros and her family to foster cultural exchange among the visual arts. CIFO is dedicated to the support of emerging and mid-career contemporary multidisciplinary artists from Latin America, who are challenging the established boundaries that define much of contemporary art today.

Based in downtown Miami, Cannonball (formerly LegalArt) is a non-profit arts organization known for its advocacy and innovative programs supporting today’s artists. Core initiatives include: SeminArt, providing free educational and professional development services to artists; LegalLink, an in-house legal advice and referral service for artists and arts organizations; and the Residency Program, which offers long-term live/work space for local artists and short-term residencies for visiting cultural producers.

Help our foundations (Krane, Inc and New Light Foundation), go forward with their theatre/arts program -Tree of Life. Join us on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Blackbird Ordinary – 729 SW 1st Avenue, Miami, Florida 33130 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

The mission of Tree of Life is to teach underprivileged and homeless teens and pre-teens (ages 10-17), how to take an idea for a play from its seedling phase to the stage. Using the power of story, autobiography, and the art of collaboration, students will learn what it means to workshop a play. Some will take on the role of set designer, others of costume; some will be actors, others directors. Some will even help with the production and the public relations aspect of production. All the while, students will be working with professionals in the field — working actors, writers, directors, producers. Often, these workshops take place as summer seminars and/or year-long conservatories that can be out of reach for low earning or poverty level families. We believe that everyone should have access to art and everyone should have the right to make art, if the passion lies within. Even if that passion has been, thus far, unrecognized. It is our goal to make that desire to create bloom; to illustrate, through hard work, the power of art — whether that art be visual, performative, or musical . Because art does, indeed have power — the power to change people and change the world through empathy, thought, and catharsis.

The location for “Art Will Save You” is a private residence, on the 28th floor of the Park Place By The Bay tower. It is the home of Lucas Monsalve, a close friend of artist Renda Writer.

When you arrive at the main entrance, just tell the doorman that you are here to see Lucas Monsalve. You don’t need to (and shouldn’t) say anything about a “party” or “art show.” You’re just “here to see Lucas.” ;)

You can also bypass the whole doorman scenario by entering through the side entrance. If you would like to do this, just send a text message to Renda Writer (310-404-4184) or Lucas (786-693-0743) saying that you are downstairs, and someone will come down to get you.

– Metered parking located in the streets surrounding the building. Also, a small parking lot with metered parking and about 30 spaces at the building. Don’t forget to pay your meter.
– Located within walking distance of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs, such as Will Call, Club Space, Mekka, America Airlines Arena, Adrienne Arsht Center.
– Located within a short driving distance of Wynwood Arts District, Midtown, etc.

Over 250 pieces of art will be on display and available for sale at a series of Saturday night private art shows that will take place in September, on the 14th, 21st, and 28th of the month.

The three private art shows, located at a private residence in downtown Miami, are scheduled to run from 7pm until 12am each night and are open to art buyers and art appreciators of all ages who RSVP with an email to privateartshow@gmail.com.

All RSVP emails must state (1) the number of people in the party (2) full names for everyone in the party (3) the date of the show they’d like to attend, and (4) time of arrival (between 7pm and 12am). Within 24 hours you will receive an email response to confirm your RSVP and reservation that will contain the address for the event and information for parking, directions, etc. Please include a phone number to receive a text message reminder the day of the event.

All attendees for all three private art shows will receive one free art print (while supplies last). Limited free refreshments will be available. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. Most of the art on display will be priced between $10 and $50, with a few pieces priced between $300 and $500, and one piece that is $2,000, so there is something for everyone and everyone’s individual budgets.

All of the art on display is the work of Renda Writer, a known figure on the South Florida arts scene for almost a decade. Renda has played many roles in the local art scene, including spoken word poet, art magazine vice president and chief editor, as well as producer, host, and promoter of art and music events and open mic nights. He added “visual artist” to the list of roles he plays when he first started making art in late 2010, or, as Renda puts it, “I started making art when everything else stopped making sense. Art became my catharsis when everything I knew started to shift.” After nearly three years of creating, Renda is now ready to exhibit his entire body of work.

Most of the art on display will be what Renda Writer calls his “Handwritten Found Object Art.” This is his own personal take on the found object art genre. He writes on what he finds… a BMW hubcap, an air conditioning vent, a few metal reel-to-reel plate, some random street signs, a calendar from the salon industry, tons of furniture wood, chunks of drywall, some old records, a ceiling tile, a kitchen cabinet door. These are just some of the things that Renda has repurposed with the written word. He uses various colors of paint markers, and writes poems, phrases, aphorisms, and stream of consciousness musings that convey ideas and themes of wit, hope, humor, and curiosity.

In addition to the “Handwritten Found Object Art,” Renda will also be exhibiting three other styles of art, which include (1) his line of “Renda Writer Jewelry,” words and ideas written on necklace charms, (2) pieces from his original “Handwritten Art” series from 2010-2011, framed sheets from a small yellow legal pad, covered with poetry and stream of consciousness thoughts, all written in blue ink, in his signature small handwritten print and (3) pieces from the “Renda Hitz Hearts” collection, an ongoing collaboration project with his friend, Billy Hitz, where the two men create eye-catching heart-shaped pieces of art and interior design accents out of carpet.

Renda is naming the private art show series “Art Will Save You” because, as he says, “Art has saved me in many ways… ways I can’t even really explain. To me, that’s what art does. It saves you. It saves the artist who makes it, the people who view it, and the people who buy it and incorporate it into their homes, and their lives. It changes you, influences you, inspires you, and… saves you.”

Atrio welcomes Miami Spice and other delectable cuisine By Betty Alvarez

Ario Restaurant and Wine Room is located in Conrad Miami Hotel’s Lobby Level 25 showcasing panoramic views of the Miami cityscape and bay. It’s a beautiful restaurant served as an appetizing allure to try the latest culinary delights in the Miami Spice and the a al carte menu.

For starters, a variety of warm bread was served along with an adequate portion plate of orange butter, mango butter, and a splash of Olive oil. We needed a second serving of the oil because the flavor had the perfect touch of what an olive oil needs to have. It was great complimenting the bread. I ordered a crisp Chardonnay. An excellent choice considering the cuisine we were about to eat. The mango butter was a first for me as I never tasted such richness and was a bit sweet. Yes, it did have a mango flavor but not too intense. Created by Chef Virgile Brandel, it was delish start that I had seconds! The orange butter was good but to my palate, it had more of the plain butter taste. Since I am more of an Olive Oil fan, I loved the type they served. It was from the Hacienda G Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil Blend which made you want to taste some more.

A variety of appetizers was served. From the A la Carte Menu, I ordered the Red Snapper Ceviche infused with Aji Amarillo, Cilantro, Ginger, and Yuzu. From the Miami Spice menu, one of my friends had the the Salmoon & Grouper Carpaccio served with shaved Bottarga & fine herb sorbet and the other had the Goat Cheese Salad with roasted beets and pecans. They both looked tasty and the presentation was excellent. My ceviche was the right portion and a great refreshing starter to wet my appetite for what was about to come.

As we entertained ourselves in the normal buzz of our lives, our entrees came. I ordered the Grilled Grouper dish that came with crispy yucca fries, pickled green papaya salad, and piri piri sauce under it. When I saw the pickled green papaya salad, I was scared. Anything with the word pickled meant to me lots of salt and processed. Although I was surprised when I tasted it. It just did not taste like a pickled green papaya but the onions that accompanied it really made the difference in the taste. The Piri Piri was a red sauce that I tasted with the grilled grouper. My friends ordered the Seared Scallops with Cauliflower mouseline, Cardamom cloud from the Miami Spice Menu. Also the Mushroom Cannelloni with a creamy gorgonzolla sauce also part of the popular annual menu. OK I tasted a bit of each. The seared scallops had a nice cooked flavor while the mushroom cannelloni was a warm pasta with the right portion.

Now lastly, dessert. An array of selections was served from the Miami Spice menu. Peach Trifle with Amaretto whipped cream layers; Farm Goat Cheesecake with raspberry coulis; Exotic Virgin Daquiri which had a mixture of Passion fruit, mango and kiwi with champagne granite which is more like a sorbet. This last one was rather refreshing and it was like tasting a champagne ice cream. However, the real kicker was the Warm Doughnut Bread Pudding. OMG! I wanted to order one for my own!! Each time I bite into one of these, I was in heaven as I tasted the warm and moist delicacy topped with a honey syrup that is to die for. If you get a chance to get it please do even if it is not in the Miami Spice menu.

After a successful inaugural year, the Miami Downtown Development Authority (Miami DDA) is working once again in tandem with a variety of arts and cultural institutions to highlight the area’s cultural renaissance through its second annual DWNTWN Art Days Event. The Miami DDA, through Creative Curator Claire Breukel and the Cultural Advisory Group, is partnering with virtually every major art and culture institution in Downtown Miami for a three-day celebration that will incorporate numerous free events and exhibitions for the community to enjoy.

The events will take place around all of Downtown with one central informational hub at Grand Central Park at Miami Worldcenter where attendees can pick up a full list of activities and begin their tour of Art Days events.

This year, Car2Go and BeachedMiami are partnering with DWNTWN Art Days to host tours around Downtown Miami venues and the exhibitions. Car2Go will host a tour by vehicle for quick and easy access to Art Days events. BeachedMiami along with Deco Bike will be providing bicycles and arranging bike tours of temporary Art Days art projects as well as permanent Downtown artworks.

Artist Thom Wheeler is also conducting a series of walking tours around some of Downtown Miami’s most exciting artist studios and exhibition spaces. Wheeler will give visitors an insider look in to the work of artists at the DWNTWN Art House at Miami Worldcenter, the Artisan Lounge, and to individual studio spaces.

In addition to the tours, the Miami Trolley will make stops at several key Art Days venues in Downtown. The Trolley route will be published on the Art Days website www.dwntwnarts.com closer to the event.

The following events are taking place during DWNTWN Art Days:
· Miami Children’s Museum: “Now Read This” Stories through Drama and Design, September 20-22 from 10am-6pm.

This year, Art Days debuts the Fringe, a series of temporary public artworks around Downtown curated by guest curator Amanda Sanfilippo. Six projects have been selected from a call to artists that received 55 national proposals. Since their inception in 1999, the traditional Cuban Son ensemble Conjunto Progreso, has taken audiences back in time to the nostalgic era of early Cuban popular music. Led by Johnny Aguiló, son of Cuban trumpet legend and band leader Rolando “El Ruso” Aguiló, Conjunto Progreso has grown from a quartet, to its recent incarnation of eight members. In 2004, Conjunto Progreso released its long awaited debut album titled Masters of Cuban Son, featuring an array of songs by legendary Cuban composers Nico Saquito, Miguel Matamoros, and Compay Segundo. The album was honored by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences with a 2006 Grammy Award Nomination under the category of Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album. www.facebook.com/conjuntoprogreso

PALO! is a favorite among South Florida’s live music devotees and in 2012 was named Miami New Times’ BEST BAND in the Readers’ Choice Awards. The group plays a style of extremely danceable music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk”. Their appeal lies in their unmatched musical energy, catchy original songs, and amazing display of impromptu virtuosity. A mix of Latin and Urban sounds gives PALO! their unique, infectious style. Formed in 2003, when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment, PALO! combines Cuban music with funk beats. PALO has performed for packed houses at New York’s legendary SOB’s, Ryles Jazz Club and Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston, and the Chicago Folk and Roots Festival. The band often appears at venues throughout South Florida. Their first CD, “This Is Afro-Cuban Funk” is available on gopalo.com as well as in music stores, on iTunes and other digital stores. www.GoPalo.com

Photographs of Bazaar Noir sponsored by Dos Equis at Grand Central

Love, Hope, Strength invites you to a night of culinary oddities, exotic beasts, and enigmatic strangers. Grand Central was transformed into a market inspired soiree guaranteed to test your wits and tempt your senses. Sip on complimentary Dos Equis as live music and unexpected encounters transport you to the Bazaar Noir.

We received these cute little passport cards that we took with us to every station to have punched.  It wasn’t that easy though. You had to try one of the “culinary oddities” or perform some task in order to get your card punched. Once all four corners of the card were punched out, then you were invited to the special secret room to view a performance.  Slits in a wall revealed a mirrored room with a dancing phoenix that seemed to perform JUST for you, like a pervy peep show. It was difficult to describe, so you’ll have to see for yourself… or ask me sometime.

The event was such a blast. We really enjoyed the musical stylings of The Candy Shop Boys. They played an eclectic and provoctive mix of muic and genres. I especially love how they cover tunes in new and interesting ways.

We were are all about partying for a purpose.  That’s why we are happy to find out that Love Hope Strength was behind all the the peculiar partying. Love Hope Strength (LHS) an international, music-centric cancer charity dedicated to saving lives, one concert at a time. Their mission is to save lives, right now, with the advances that have already been made in cancer care.

So, how does one become a marrow or blood stem cell donor?

It is a painless and simple procedure to get registered.  You fill out a quick form, have your cheek swabbed. The cells are taken and sent to a lab to be tested to determine your tissue type.  Your data is then entered into the National Marrow Donor Program registry. No worries. It’s anonymous.

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Deferred Archive Awards Grants and Commissions Exhibition Opening 8/28/13

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Deferred Archive Awards Grants & Commissions Exhibition Opening
August 28th
Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation
1018 North Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33136

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) is proud to announce Deferred Archive as this year’s Grants & Commissions Program exhibition. As it is customary, the winners are part of the annual exhibition dedicated to the program at the CIFO Art Space. This year’s exhibition will open to the public from August 28th to October 27th.

The tenth edition of CIFO’s Grants & Commissions Program features newly commissioned works by Jorge Mendez Blake (Mexico), Milena Bonilla (Colombia), Miguel Calderon (Mexico), Antonio Caro (Colombia), Benvenuto Chavajay (Guatemala), José Gabriel Fernandez (Venezuela), Sofia Olascoaga (Mexico), Manuela Ribadeneira (Ecuador), Laureana Toledo (Mexico) and Santiago Villanueva (Argentina).

Deferred Archive refers to the idea that memory is constructed retrospectively – not from past to future, but from future to past, so that the events that we experience are not fixed in time, but fleeting from one subject to the other.

In Hal Foster’s Return of the Real, he looks to Freudian theory of deferred action to recover psychoanalysis as a model to understand how we construct the history of avant-garde art. According to Foster, Freud’s theory of deferred action is seen as an event that is recorded as traumatic when a subsequent event retroactively recodes it. Foster, in turn, proposes that the significance of the events of the avant-garde occurs in a similar way by a complex alternation of anticipation and reconstruction. Thus we see what happens when artists work with the idea of the archive. The archive becomes a distinct model in understanding how memory is constructed.

The idea of the deferred archive represents the artist looking back, activating past events and classifying them in order to understand a particular moment, as if revisiting the event with the perspective of today gives it the opportunity to really exist; a type of documentation that allows for memory to be created within the now – or, memory according to a later experience. The artist uses this model as a way of recognizing that memory is always something in the making. By looking to the past, the artists participating in CIFO’s 2013 Grants & Commissions Program are not searching for a memory, but rather creating a memory through documentation/archiving. The act of post-event documentation (or belated documentation) therefore becomes the deferred archive.

“CIFO remains committed to maintaining investment and supporting contemporary artists from Latin America,” said CIFO Founder Ella Fontanals-Cisneros. “In the tenth edition of the Grants & Commissions Program, we are very proud to honor this year’s award recipients who are creating some of the most challenging and innovative work today. These awards serve as a testament to the artists’ skill, creativity and vision.”

CIFO’s Grants & Commissions Program offers opportunities to up to six emerging and three mid- career contemporary artists from Latin America as well as an annual Achievement award, recognizing the contributions of established artists who would benefit from significant international exposure and recognition. The funds awarded in the Grants and Commissions program are given directly to the selected artists in order to develop their pieces, providing more flexibility for the artist. The artists are nominated each year by CIFO’s Honorary Advisory Committee of leading art professionals, curators and artists from Latin America, the United States, and Europe. After a rigorous review process, the recipients are chosen by the Selection Committee and ratified by CIFO’s Board of Directors. Having already benefitted over a hundred artists during its ten years, the Program has been known to springboard recipients into the next level of their careers.

This year, CIFO has partnered with Cannonball, an Artist Residency based in Downtown Miami, to award one of the artists in the Grants & Commissions Program with a two month residency. CIFO’s Board of Directors selected Benvenuto Chavajay from Guatemala for the residency where he will spend the months leading up to the exhibition focusing on creating his project.

Guru Rugu’s Massage Workshop for Artists 7/13/13

Guru Rugu’s Massage Workshop for Artists
massage catsSaturday, July 13, 2013, 3:00-7:00 PM
Cannonball
1035 N Miami Ave, Suite 301
Miami, FL 33136
$FREE

Please plan to be prompt and to attend the entire workshop – no latecomers.
Space is limited to 16 attendants. RSVP is required by 5:00 PM on July 12 to splash@cannonballmiami.org. Please indicate if you will be attending solo or with a partner.

This basic training will develop your rudimentary massage skills by exploring simple strategies for the use of hands, fingers, forearms, and elbows, and for listening through touch. Massages will occur while seated in chairs, and will not involve any additional equipment, creams, or oils. Participants will remain clothed throughout the training. Arriving solo is totally fine, but if rubbing strangers or semi-strangers seems odd, feel free to bring a partner you trust.

Tea and water will be provided, but please BYO snacks.

Adam Overton is an experimental artist, and certified massage therapist (since 2007) living in Los Angeles, California, and a visiting resident at Cannonball through mid-August. His work involves performance, writing, experimental music, massage, and workshops, in formats that involve audience participation in order to facilitate odd and intimate artist‐led experiences. Overton works closely with Guru Rugu as co‐director of the experimental meditation center of los angeles and as a ghostwriter for Guru Rugu’s Experimental Meditation Hour on KCHUNG Radio.

The experimental meditation center of los angeles has no permanent location, and will be based in Miami throughout this summer. Adam Overton and Guru Rugu takes the role of artist-as-facilitator, offering small group meditation sessions, each of them of different nature. These sessions are not the traditional “therapeutic” meditations, but rather repurposed spiritual, religious, and physical forms of playful yet profound meditation, offering a safe environment for “something else” to happen. Experimental meditation sessions will be held at non-traditional locations throughout the City, and will be free and open to the public.
For more information about the artist, please visit plus1plus1plus.org.

Opa-locka: Mirage City Exhibition Opening at HistoryMiami on Thursday, June 27, 2013.  This is an amazing exhibition I had no idea that Opa-Locka had such an interesting and wonderful history.  The exhibition runs from June 28, 2013 – September 08, 2013, this a must see.

“Opa-locka: Mirage City explores one of South Florida’s most unique architectural communities. Based on stories and names of characters from the Arabian Tales, Opa-locka presents itself as both eccentric dream; an exotic Middle-eastern urban oasis in a subtropical paradise, and tourist’s kitsch; an architectural conceit more akin to a Hollywood film set. Founded in the 1920s in an undeveloped area of northwest Miami-Dade, the city is a highly romanticized interpretation of an exotic cultural milieu popularized by Hollywood films and archeological discoveries of its time. The exhibition presents original drawings and architectural models that reintroduce the original fabled vision, aiming to rouse interest in the city’s iconic structural design and encourage efforts to preserve its endangered architectural heritage.”

Karina Iglesias, seen on NBC’s The Voice and the Nu-Thang perform at Unity on the Bay

Unity on the Bay
411 NE 21st Street, Miami, FL 33137,
Miami, Florida 33137

Cost: $25

Miami native Karina Iglesias takes center stage at Unity on the Bay to perform her usual boleros, jazzy-pop style of hip-hop and American classics on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 8:00 pm. Iglesias, as seen on NBC’s #1 hit TV show ‘The Voice’, performs with Nu-Thang and special guest artist Monique Abbadie. Tickets on sale at www.unityonthebay.org. Ticketed pre-party reception starts at 7pm.

“This concert is my own spin on top popular music. It’s my personal vocal touch on a mix of jazz, pop, and blues songs along with some new, original material,” said Iglesias, songwriter and singer. This is Iglesias’s first concert since leaving ‘The Voice’.

In 2013, Iglesias was a top 16 contestant on NBC’s #1 hit TV show ‘The Voice’. She was originally a member of Team Adam, after a two-chair audition that included Blake Shelton, and was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World”, which became a YouTube sensation.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, the saucy, soultress songwriter is a long-time South Florida vocal favorite. The Miami Dolphins hired her through Emilio Estefan to sing the anthem at all home games, as part of the ensemble Dolphin Voices, in 2009. She was featured on Univision’s Mira Quien Baila and has taken the stage with numerous Latin artists.

Adam Levine, ‘The Voice’ coach said after Iglesias audition: “I felt like for the first time on the show, that possibly, that towards the end, that the light fixtures were just gonna’ explode, because [she is] a great singer and [she] really deserves to be here, so congratulations.”

Special guest artist Monique Abbadie takes the stage with Iglesias and the Nu-Thang at the concert. Abbadie is a pop artist who has performed at the legendary House of Blues Los Angeles, Planet Hollywood Las Vegas and Miami’s Gusman Center, among many others places. She has also been on NBCs hit show ‘The Voice’ where she recently participated on Team Shakira.

Concert tickets are $25. Meet Iglesias in a private pre-party reception that starts at 7pm. Tickets for the reception and concert are $50. Tickets can be purchased at www.unityonthebay.org or at Unity on the Bay’s The Source Bookstore, 411 NE 21st Street, Miami, FL 33137.

Unity on the Bay is a dynamic trans-denominational spiritual community dedicated to the transformation of ourselves and the world. Its values include acceptance, love, service, and gratitude.

Artoconecto’s KIDSART, in partnership with the Cisneros Fontanals Arts Foundation (CIFO) returns this summer with an exciting new series of affordable art camps for children led by five contemporary artists in Miami. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, and for five consecutive weeks, each artist will lead two themed workshops per week, open to a group of 25 children, from 2PM to 5PM. It is an incredible opportunity for kids, ages 6 to 12 to closely learn and interact with working artists who live and work in Miami. The list of prominent artists who will conduct the weekly art sessions includes: Victor Muniz, Reed Von Brunschot and Olivia Ramos.

KIDSART’s workshops are designed so parents do not need to commit to all five weeks. There is a small contribution of $25.00 dollars per child, per week, which will benefit the program. That means, two art sessions per week that includes materials and snacks. The artwork created during the workshops will be exhibited at CIFO during the first weekend of August. In addition, as part of the summer programming, CIFO is gearing up for a fun calendar of cultural events for the entire family in the evenings so make sure to check the website for updates.

Registration for KIDSART is open to all children in Miami. We have also created an on-line market place, where parents can proceed to register early.

KIDSART

Tuesday and Thursday from 2PM to 5PM. Please note, week of July 4th workshops will be held on Monday, July 1st and Tuesday July 2nd.

Cost: $25 US dollars per child that covers materials and snacks.

Cyrano Mio begins one year after the death of Cyrano. Roxana, still in the convent where she waited for Cyrano every Saturday for 15 years, recounts their conversations and remembers the man she loved thru the face of Cristian. During this voyage thru memory lane, Roxana realizes that she is indebted with with Cyrano, Cristina and God. She realizes that she loved Cristian with a divided soul, look for comfort in God, but it was Cyrano who kept her alive and almost happy with his wit and protection. Every minute of her memories is filled with the guilt of never understanding how sublime his love really was.

For a third year in a row the Miami community can be part of the global celebration of social media as part of Mashable’s Social Media Day.

As Peter Cashmore, founder of Mashable and Social Media Day states: “Social Media Day is a day to celebrate the ways in which social media has changed our lives for the better. It’s also a celebration of people — you, the people who make social media so fun, useful, informative, and enlightening.”
Social Media Day Miami will celebrate the art and craft of social media through multiple tracks that feature talks benefiting the beginner as well as advanced user.

The Miami conference will assemble more than thirty speakers who will give insightful presentations on topics related to the ever changing digital and tech worlds. The conference is FREE, but RSVP is required.

For 2013, the Arsht Center has partnered with Social Media Day Miami to bring the event to the Knight Concert Hall building – a perfect venue for the conference. The Arsht Center’s support of Social Media Day is yet another example of this institution’s commitment to the advancement of digital usage as a tool of communications among the South Florida community.

Ford Latino has also partnered with SMDAYMIA through Latinos in Social Media (LATISM) South Florida chapter to present an exciting panel about Millennials. Representatives from Ford Latino, Yelp, and the new channel Fusion (an ABC / Univision venture) will explore the GenY generation, specifically the growing Latino group, and their influences within the community.

Social Media Day Miami would like to thank its partners and media sponsors that have made possible this event: Arsht Center, Ford, Compuquip, Car2Go, OTB, GetMyFiles, Boalt, Lalchandani Simon, Social Media Club South Florida, The LAB, MPA, YELP, RefreshMiami, LATISM SFL, Philanthrofest, Livelihood, and La Nota Latina.

Mike Diana: Miami or Bust
100 Ne 11th St.
Miami, FL 33132
www.basfisherinvitational.com
In 1994, underground cartoonist, filmmaker, amateur publisher and First Amendment champion Mike Diana became the first artist ever to receive a criminal conviction for obscenity for artwork in the United States. When Mike Diana was 9 years-old, his family moved from Geneva, New York to Largo, Florida. He began to draw constantly, becoming a fan of underground comics as a teen. Soon after graduating high school, he began printing his own comics, including the series, Boiled Angel, which grew to 300 subscribers mostly in cities outside of of Florida. This is a true feat, considering that this was a time before online social media. In 1991, a copy ended up in the hands of a California law enforcement officer who falsely linked Diana with the then unsolved Gainesville student murders. The FBI was alerted, Diana was investigated but Diana was ultimately cleared of all involvement. However, the hysterics continued.
The trial judge found the work “patently offensive” and stated,
“The evident goal of the appellant’s publication is to portray shocking and graphic pictures of sexual conduct so it will be noticed. If the message is about victimization and that horrible things are happening in our society, as the appellant alleges, the appellant SHOULD HAVE created a vehicle to send his message that was not obscene.”

Ricardo Lopez, Principal, Florez Lopez Architects
Lorry Woods, Owner, Elwoods Gastro Pub

A lot’s changed in Miami over the past few years, especially in downtown, and there’s tremendous opportunity to build an awesome, uniquely Miami place.

Following the discussion, we’ll break out into small groups to brainstorm and plan small projects that could help create a more vibrant downtown. 100 NE 11th Street
Miami, FL 33132.

Join us for a one night EP release showcase for Miami’s indielectro pop duo One Drop Theory.

Dimensions Variable is pleased to host the CD release event for Miami’s indielectro pop duo One Drop Theory. The event will be on Friday, June 28th, 2013 at 8pm. The duo will perform live and cocktails will be served.

One Drop Theory’s self titled release is a collaborative EP endeavor between Susie Green & Isaac Bichachi. After several years of working in the music industry as writers and producers, these two classically trained Miami musicians decided to combine past and future to create an alternate present. The album crafts One Drop Theory’s delicate composition sensibilities and mastery of synthesized sounds with powerful vocals.

Green’s melodic voice and sampler interventions weave life into Bichachi’s synthetic electronic and production. Tracks like Rails, an electronic instrumental roller coaster ride show off the duo’s passion for electronic compositions. The groups most hypnotic track called Fool’s Circle is best described by a quote from Albert Einstein: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result." This quote highlights the track and sheds light on how individuals and society don’t learn from their mistakes and continue to cycle around the same vicious loop. And finally, an anthem for all those who feel marginalized, Freak Flag establishes a banner in which to stand united.

Photographs from Transit Talk at Avenue D on 5/29/13

Transit Talk at Avenue D on Wednesday, May 29, 2012.

Transit Talk featured a panel of local transit advocates and professionals that talked about the transit issues in Miami. The upcoming Transportation Summit (a separate event happening on June 6th) was a key topic — this pre-summit summit will provide information on what to expect and how to most effectively address transit issues. Other topics of interest include pedestrian and bike safety, walkable streets, and the current state of Miami-Dade’s transit ecosystem. Ideas sessions to directly follow discussion.

Transit Talk was presented by the Miami Foundation, in collaboration with the Miami DDA, Madera Events, WhereBy.Us, Move Miami Dade and the Citizen’s Independent Transportation Trust.

{Please feel free to download and share.}

Information below via Transit Talk Transit Talk // Urban Mobility

1. Transit Talk: Preliminary Recap
While there is still more information and knowledge to go through and better understand, we hope you walked away with initial knowledge and insight into Miami-Dade’s Transportation eco-system. Wednesday’s turnout and participation showed us that this was the first step in the right direction. Thank you for showing up and being part of the conversation.

As we heard several times during the Talk, the process starts and ends with us so long as we are willing to partake in the overall process. Talking directly to commissioners is one of the most influential things we can do. Also key is setting our own transportation-taking precedent to our circle of friends and family and even passersby.

As mentioned Wednesday, one of our goals for the night was to share the panelists’ knowledge and perspective in anticipation of next week’s Transportation Summit. One notable point was that the Summit is intended to bring together decision makers to listen to what citizens have to say. Information on what to expect at the Summit is listed below (#3).

2. Transit Talk Survey: Initial Results
While all the survey information is currently being compiled, we would like to share preliminary results based on what you believe to be the biggest issue surrounding Miami-Dade County transit. According to Transit Talk attendees:
A. Infrastructure, specifically transit options and maintenance is the leading problem.
B. Lack of Leadership and Vision is perceived to be a very close second as a critical need.
C. Lack of Citizen Input in planning & decisions was cited as the third area of biggest concern.

The Transit Talk team will share these findings with officials and transportation decision makers at the Transportation Summit on June 6th. We invite anyone interested in presenting these topics to please let us know if you can join us. We would be grateful for assistance in compiling additional supporting stats and/or in communicating this message in-person on June 6th (please respond to this email).

3. Details & What To Expect at the 2013 Transportation Summit:
Kelly Cooper, Strategic Planner for the Citizen’s Independent Transportation Trust (CITT), provided a useful synopsis of what to expect at the Summit. The Summit will occur on June 6th, at Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus. 300 NE 2nd Ave, Chapman Conference Center, Room 3210.

The Summit’s location is conveniently accessible from the Metromover’s College/Bayside station
The entire event is open to any member of the public
Mayor Carlos Gimenez will deliver a Keynote Address at 9:30am
Breakout Sessions will occur between 10:15am and 3:30pm
Public Visioning Session begins at 4:30pm and will continue until necessary. All are welcomed to attend and discuss related issues. The session is open, so anyone will be welcomed even if they cannot arrive by 4:30pm. This is where/when the Transit Talk team will communicate the survey findings.

A number of prominent transportation decision makers, stakeholders and influencers are expected to be in attendance and have indicated that they are there, first and foremost, to listen to what citizens have to say.

4. Forthcoming Information from Transit Talk:
As stated above, the Transit Talk team will compile the full survey results shortly. This information, plus notes from the event and “6 Citizen Actions” as outline by Cesar Garcia-Pons, will be shared with all who registered. In addition, we will send any supporting documents as attachments.

Miami Art Museum presents a NWM2013/the end program: “Convicted for Comics: A Talk with Underground Cartoonist Mike Diana” on Thursday, May 16, at 6:30pm. In 1994 Mike Diana (b.1969) became the first artist to receive a criminal conviction for obscenity for artwork in the United States. This is the first time in 15 years Diana will return to Florida. Diana will deliver an illustrated talk reflecting on his experiences both prior, during and after the conviction. The Miami Art Museum and the end have organized this talk as a platform for hearing and remembering Diana’s story and the challenges to artists’ freedom of expression.

Following the talk, Miami-based quartet Baby B Strings will debut their original arrangement of one of Modest Mussorgsky’s most famous works, “Pictures at an Exhibition.” Baby B Strings is Belinda Ho, violin, Tony Seepersad, violin, Vivian Torres, viola, Pilar Suter, cello with Oscar Bustillo, conducting.

This talk and performance is organized in conjunction with the exhibition New Work Miami 2013 on view at MAM through Sunday, June 2, 2013. The exhibition presents recent and newly commissioned work by approximately a dozen Miami-based artists, highlighting the diverse and innovative practices of the city’s artists, featuring site-specific installations, sculpture, painting, and photography. The exhibition is among the last presentations in MAM’s current facility, which will reopen in December as Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) in a new, Herzog & de Meuron-designed building in downtown’s Museum Park.

As part of New Work Miami 2013, NWM2013 programs are organized by SPRING BREAK/the end, a nomadic project that presents artist-driven educational and performance events at different venues throughout Miami.

**This talk is intended for mature audiences only. Viewer discretion advised.**

National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill 25th Annual Exhibition Opening Reception
May 10, 2013, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Borders Picture Framing Gallery
1601 SW 1st Street
Miami, FL 33135

Admission:   Free

The National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill (NAEMI), an organization dedicated to collecting, displaying and selling of art by persons in recovery from mental illness, will open its 25th annual exhibition on May 10th at Borders Picture Framing Gallery in Miami.
Lucia Balleste.

"Mental illness has been in the news a lot recently. We want to blame it for many things it is not. Crimes are committed by many people with no mental illness all the time and more people than you think are receiving therapy or taking medication for mental illnesses and live normal lives.

Art therapy is one way of bringing happiness to all people and NAEMI (National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill) has been promoting that for over 25 years. By holding the exhibition during May, we hope to bring additional attention to the struggle of those who have been diagnosed with mental illness," said NAEMI’s Founder Juan Martin. "Our ultimate goal is to help these artists be recognized and fight the stigma that so often accompanies mental illness."

The exhibition features works of artists from Paraguay, Chile, Cuba, Spain and the United States. All 43 artworks featured in the exhibition will be available for sale, with the proceeds benefiting the artists and NAEMI’s goals of helping artists from around the world.
Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Dave Tompkins presents The Beat and Cheated Death 5/15/13

Dave Tompkins presents "The Beat and Cheated Death"
shell2Wednesday, May 15, 7:00 – 10:00 pm
Cannonball
1035 N Miami Ave
Miami, FL 33136

Free and Open to the Public

Writer and cultural critic, Dave Tompkins, presents a free, public lecture on the cultural, geological, and political histories of Miami, propagating from Miami Bass: a hip-hop waveform that evolved into a way of life and made the air catch feelings–like low endless love. Based on research for a forthcoming book project Sustained Decay, Tompkins speaks to properties of 808 Bass through a sub-history of ossified invertebrates, man-made beaches, riots, skate rinks, cocaine, coral reefs, sea cucumbers, and a U-boat attack in 1942. This is beat who cheated death—the Bass that torpedoed its regenerative guts into the face of the world.

Tompkins’s illustrated talk will be followed by "sustenance decadence", a music and dance set featuring 12-inch vinyl records and 45s. Groove to bass, disco, electro-soul, and classy grown 80s synth Boogie in Cannonball’s lobby, which houses a site-specific installation by artist Bhakti Baxter.

Dave Tompkins’s first book, How To Wreck A Nice Beach: The Vocoder From World War II To Hip-Hop, which Amazon named entertainment book of the year in 2010, is now available in paperback. He has lectured in Poland, Norway, Germany, and at the NSA’s National Cryptology Symposium.

He has contributed to Slate, Grantland, Paris Review, Oxford American, Grand Royal, and The Wire, where he wrote a hip-hop column for eight years. Born in North Carolina, he currently lives in Brooklyn. For more crosstalk and mixes, go to howtowreckanicebeach.com.
