Out of Naples, we have The Wholetones sharing some “Folkmetalbluegrass” just in time for the holidays. DJ Haitian Hillbilly will be spinning as well. No Cover.

Biography
Formed in 2007 when Alex Dorris and Taylor Freydberg met at a local bluegrass jam, the Wholetones were later completed with the addition of Russ Depa on upright bass, and Mayo Coates on drums.
They play a unique mix of bluegrass, folk, jazz, and metal, all translated through acoustic instruments.
Combining impressive technical skill with the spontaneity of jazz and drive of bluegrass, they put on a captivating live show, jumping from folk to metal as easily as they do from banjo to cello.
The Wholetones’ blend of genres is a result of the four members’ enormously varied musical appetite. They play and listen to reggae, metal, hip-hop, bluegrass, and everything in between, and the end product is a truly original sound.

Salient works presented will highlight the diversity evident in contemporary visual art practices including painting, sculpture and mixed media installations. The goal of Prizm Art Fair during Art Basel week is to showcase a diverse group of artists who reflect the depth of talent in emerging markets adding to the caliber of artists represented in South Florida. Ms. Solomon and Ms. Vickles are two women committed to creating a platform to ensure that Prizm Art Fair provides opportunities for artists of the African Diaspora, emerging markets and those inspired by the Diaspora within one of the biggest art destination events in the country.

Curator and Creative Director of the Fair, Marie Vickles, states that “Prizm Art Fair is presenting a new aesthetic inspired by varied forms of traditional art-making paired with contemporary techniques and technology, which is the essence of creativity meeting spirituality in the purest sense of holistic creation. Artists will present work that will inspire and challenge the notions of what the African Diaspora and emerging art markets are creating in a ‘stream-of-consciousness’ beyond the mainstream. “We’re really excited about the submissions we’ve received from local, national and international artists. We’re looking forward showcasing an exceptional group of exhibiting artists and galleries from the African Diaspora. We are deeply thankful for the support of Marquis Miami, Frank Frazier, Ms. Deborah Shelton Tynes, Minna Dunn and all of our sponsors for their unwavering support and belief in our project”, states Mikhaile Solomon, Founder and Director of Prizm.

Parodi Lecture in Philosophy of Art The Distracted Exhibition by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev 12/8/13

Parodi Lecture in Philosophy of Art: “The Distracted Exhibition. On Enchantment and Composting Archival Shreds.” by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev
Sunday, 12/08/2013, 11:30am
Pérez Art Museum Miami, Auditorium
1103 Biscayne Blvd.
Miami, FL 33132

This lecture by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev explores the question of the art exhibition as an embodied and “dis-tracted” archive(dis / trahere = to pull or to draw in another direction), and it focuses on how objects function in relation to the experience of witnessing – the artist’s witnessing of the world, the viewer’s witnessing of the artwork, and even the art object’s witnessing of the spectacle within which it is caught and entrapped. dOCUMENTA (13) was both an art exhibition, a process and a state of mind. In it, the notion of archive was viewed with suspicion and pulled towards forms of symbiotic decomposition and recomposition – a cultural quasi-compost. With examples of artworks and projects created for dOUCUMENTA (13), including Mario Garcia Torres, Rossella Biscotti, Claire Pentecost, Michael Rakowitz, And And And, Adrian Villar-Rojas and Dihn Q Lee.

Christov-Bakargiev is artistic director for dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel (2009-2012); visiting professor at: The Cooper Union, New York (2013); Northwestern University, Evanston-Chicago (2013-2015); Goethe -Universität Frankfurt am Main / Institut für Philosophie University, Frankfurt (2013-2015); Leverhulme Professor, University of Leeds (2014).

Lecture is free with museum admission.

The Parodi Lecture in Philosophy of Art is supported by Gonzalo Parodi.

Maserati North America will host the VIP Toast at PAMM just before the Museum welcomes members and Art Basel VIPS for the special opening celebration and Maserati VIP Lounge experience. The event will also present The Ghibli, Maserati’s latest car to revolutionize the luxury automobile industry by defining “accessible luxury.” Serving as the museum’s opening party, PAMM Presents LOS JAICHACKERS, the evening will debut a new project, Night Shade/Solanaceae, featuring sculpture, video, and music.

Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) celebrates its first Miami Art Week in its new, state-of-the-art facility with a special opening celebration featuring a major performance by multimedia art collaborative LOS JAICHACKERS. For this one-night-only performance titled Night Shade/Solanaceae, LOS JAICHACKERS will transform the museum into a site of cultural collisions through musical performances, video and sculpture.

Created in response to Miami’s unique cultural and visual landscape, LOS JAICHACKERS’ Night Shade/Solanaceae will include two new videos and enlist the musical talents of TOTAL FREEDOM (Los Angeles), DJ LENGUA (Los Angeles) and Los Master Plus (Guadalajara, Mexico). TOTAL FREEDOM combines solid club beats with his own global and freeform sensibilities, and Los Master Plus is a duo that covers contemporary songs by über pop bands such as Daft Punk, Radiohead, No Doubt and Dr. Dre in Spanish, reworking them through the unique musical styles of techno-cumbia. LOS JAICHACKERS will debut a new video, which was shot in Miami, with live musical accompaniment on a stage set that combines ideas of contraband and piracy within contemporary culture, music and art. This set is comprised of massive ice sculptures that derive their form from the sound systems of Jamaica, South America and Mexico. These sculptures will slowly melt away over the course of the evening, revealing mysterious packages and strange, exotic night fruits. In addition, a series of sculptures, which refer to the anti-pirating messages for Louis Vuitton goods found at local swap meets, will be displayed inside the museum.

LOS JAICHACKERS is a collaboration between Eamon Ore-Giron and Julio Cesar Morales, artists based in Los Angeles and Phoenix. As part of their multifaceted practice, they collaborate with other artists and musicians to produce programs that ‘trace the global DNA of emerging musical subcultures in Latin America, the border, the United States and abroad.’ Their piece, Night Shade/Solanaceae, has been specially commissioned by PAMM for its inaugural opening and is the first program of the Museum’s new time-based arts initiative.

On View: December 2, 2013 – January 24, 2014

Primary Projects (“PRIMARY”), an ambitious platform for contemporary artists and curators, presents Contender, new works from Kenton Parker during Art Basel Miami. In a solo show dedicated to self-portraiture through sculpture, painting, installation and photography, the artist challenges the viewer with a swell of raw emotions. On location at Milk Studios (Los Angeles), Parker calls on long-time friend and photographer, Patrick Hoelck, to capture the madness that makes-up the artist’s multiple personalities. Parker tacked on the roles of producer, director, editor and subject for this exhibition, exposing his various states of being behind and in front of the lens. Contender is the most extensive, self-referential and personal body of work of Parker’s career, revealing a narrative that ultimately speaks to the human condition.

“Kenton Parker is a contender in every sense of the word,” said Books Bischof, PRIMARY founder and curator. “The purity of Parker is what makes him such a precious commodity. This exhibition contains an opportune moment to encounter the extensive character make-up of this uniquely creative eccentric.”

Parker’s self-portraits challenge the boundaries between artist and subject in a process where he meticulously sketches and storyboards each photo shoot of himself. Scenarios, among others, include fighting, purging, nudity and apathy – plots so universal and powerfully executed that in pieces such as “From Bad to Worse” or “We Both Knew This Was Coming,” the line between how the artist is feeling and what he is staging is easily blurred.

In “Always Sorry,” a lush installation that takes on the form and function of a flower boutique, Parker creates a unique opportunity to engage audiences with a poetic, intimate, living object. The life cycle of the flower traces the growth, beauty, decomposition and death as a ritual of existence. On a journey that asks viewers to become acutely aware of their own humanity, Parker invites them to relive their memories in his safe space at PRIMARY.

PRIMARY Opens New Gallery Space in Downtown Miami
Curated by Cristina Gonzalez, Typoe and Books Bischof, Contender will inaugurate PRIMARY’s new Downtown Miami 5,000-sq. ft. space. Officially opening its doors to the public on Monday, December 2, the reception is slated for Friday, December 6 to coincide with the area’s monthly ArtWalk. PRIMARY’s relocation to Downtown is one of several organizations finding inspiration in the city center, including the Perez Art Museum of Miami, a satellite space by the Wolfsonian Museum, DWNTWN Arthouse, Dimensions Variable and more. A trolley operated by the Downtown Development Authority will shuttle visitors to and from Miami Beach during December art fair week. This unique exhibit also features pieces designed by the most influential fashion houses around the globe including Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Christian Dior and Pucci. “The Iconic Archives” Costume Exhibition is sponsored by Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour and is supported by Art Miami, Fashion Group International and Miami International University of Art & Design. The Art of Fashion Show™ 2013 presents “The Iconic Archive,” a unique costume exhibition that explores fashion as art and celebrates the interconnected roles of fashion visionaries as artists. Since 2002, Miami’s Art Week has highlighted the most prestigious art shows throughout the first week of December and draws more than 200,000 art enthusiasts, collectors, dealers, curators, artists, designers and art lovers. “The Iconic Archives” Costume Exhibition will be one of the highlighted shows this year.

The exhibition’s layout is creatively comprised of thematic installments that highlight the timelessness of creations worn by iconic figures throughout history as well as pieces designed by the most influential fashion houses around the globe. The viewer will transcend time with pieces inspired by significant historical fashion icons such as 18th-century French Queen Marie Antoinette and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

Another installment will then take the viewer on a private tour into the personal wardrobe collections of icons such as Celia Cruz, Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo, Maria Felix, Sara Montiel and Libertad Lamarque among others. The viewer will then move on to experience contemporary pieces designed by acclaimed fashion-houses including Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Christian Dior and Pucci. On display in this installment will be current pieces from Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour and fashion collectors like Bernice Steinbaum, Lili Estefan, Madeleine Kirsh of C. Madeleine’s, Tata Fernandez and the endangered animal-inspired eco-fashion collection by the Gabby Wild Foundation and Project Runway alumni. Curator Luis Valenzuela masterfully creates a visual experience with gowns, accessories and costumes that bring to life the distinctive style of some of the greatest legends of all-time.

In an effort to support Miami’s emerging design talent, Miami International University of Art & Design students Parker Trumble, Samantha de la Fuente and Mario Valladares have been selected to showcase their original pieces in “The Iconic Archive.” The Art of Fashion Show™ 2013 program will also feature a pop-up gallery highlighting one-of-a-kind fashion accessories including the Emerald Project by Lizette Chalela.

A portion of the proceeds from the Opening V.I.P. Reception and Press Preview hosted on Sunday, December 1 from 4pm – 6pm will benefit the Celia Cruz Foundation as a tribute to the 10th Anniversary of her passing and her incredible legacy. Tickets to the Opening V.I.P. Reception and Press Preview are now on sale at www.arshtcenter.org/tickets.

“The Iconic Archive” is sponsored by Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour and is supported by Art Miami, Fashion Group International and Miami International University of Art & Design.

Curator Luis Valenzuela has successfully organized art exhibitions in distinguished institutions such as The Chelsea Art Museum New York City and The Kennedy Center Washington D.C. as well as at art fairs such as Art Miami and Art Wynwood. His work has also been featured at Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus and New York Fashion Week. Most notable of Valenzuela’s work as a curator is his collaboration with art champion and pioneer Bernice Steinbaum.

From December 5th to 8th, Miami will host the 12th annual edition of Art Basel, one of the biggest art gatherings worldwide. It is time for art enthusiasts to be glamoured once again, by something we like to call Paradoxes.

On December 6th, after their very successful first encounter during Art Basel 2012; PL0T will team up with it’s acclaimed partner label LIFE AND DEATH to present the second edition of a series of events during Art Basel weekend.
Staring Tale of Us, Dj Tennis, Thugfucker and Mind Against (US debut).

After a very booming year and improbable events in the universe, the founders of Life and Death return to their beloved Miami to challenge themselves upon the creation of a materialized encounter, and take us exploring between Life and Death. Based on the vision of bringing the strange and undisguised sounds of the label to full sensory dimension, this 10 hour affair shall not resemble a conventional club night nor yet another label showcase; taking this opportunity to debut one of the labels most prominent up and comer, Mind Against; along with the already unshakable legends. Expect mind-boggling music and a physical transformation of The Vagabond’s three main performance areas, all of which will be equipped with cutting edge sound systems, including the club’s own custom Funktion 1, to ensure that patrons and art aficionados alike will enjoy the full spectrum of this exquisite multi-sensory experience.

And of course, a PL0T party is not a party without showcasing Miami’s most prominent local talent. This time we are inviting to the decks Dsan Powell and Baez, to join our notorious resident trouble maker Alejandro Sab.

Come and be part of a night of paradoxes between Life and Death.

The Interactive Art Fair (IAF), a week-long exhibition series aimed at showcasing established and emerging artists working in technology and education, will embark on its inaugural run with a December 3-8, coinciding with Art Basel Miami Beach.
From its unique vantage point in Miami’s Park West neighborhood, recognized for its budding tech scene, the IAF will feature art, lectures, interactive workshops and music created in and for the digital realm, introducing local and global art patrons alike to the multifaceted relationship between technology and art.

“The Interactive Art Fair is a prototype for what we feel is the future of the ‘art fair’ experience,” says founder Allyson Parker of Parker Projekts. “As the cleave between art and technology narrows, the more opportunity there is for us to create that experience for a new type of art buyer.”

The IAF will prominently feature the work of accomplished artists and technologists like Gabriella Levine, who explores the relationship between art, technology and ecology, Melissa F. Clarke, known for creating multimedia installations using sound, video and interactive art, and ChiKA, who choreographs “minimalist geometric visual narratives” to live music.

“I’m very happy to be a part of a project that aims to support artists working with digital media and that addresses the intersection between art, technology and education,” says IAF curator Andrea Wolf, Director of Brooklyn’s Reverse gallery.
“New technologies confront us with an interesting challenge: to question images and to search for their true nature without being engrossed by all the tools simply capable of high precision.”

In just its first year, the IAF has secured partnerships with a wide array of renowned names, including multinational augmented reality mobile application developer Layar, the Californiabased TakeOver Agency and Miami’s own Product 81, who will illustrate the longstanding impact of the IAF within the local community.
While the IAF is high-minded, it appeals to a broad demographic, including Millennials who understand and work with various technological mediums daily. “[The IAF] is not just for the collector who can invest in a physical art piece,” says Parker. “It’s for any member of the creative class that sees the wealth of investing in ideas, and the future.” The Interactive Art Fair will host a VIP and press preview on December 3 rd, and will open to the public from December 4-8. For additional information, visit InteractiveArtFair.com or follow the IAF on Twitter: @IAF_Miami, #interactiveartfair.

The gallery emphasizes the integration of art and life. In addition to bringing contemporary European photography to Miami this gallery encourages a holistic experience of the works it exhibits.

In keeping with that tradition, CU-1 Gallery welcomes artist Todd Brittingham who will be exhibiting his newest work titled “Angels” which he describes as an exploration of forms in space. It is the combination of his love for the female form together with his appreciation of nature that is the genesis of this series which fuses those two concepts together.

The sculptures are cast in bronze through an ancient lost wax process and finished in a unique patina which brings life to his forms. Brittingham’s combination of human and animalistic sculptures gives off a simultaneously spiritual and sensual feeling for the viewer.

Todd Brittingham’s exhibition is partnered with Blink Group, (A marketing firm for visual artists) and hosted and curated by Elizabeth Reyes and Alexandra Novaro, co-founders of BlinkGroup.

Zoetic Stage and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County are proud to present the world premiere of Fear Up Harsh, a searing new drama by Zoetic Stage co-founder and Carbonell Award-winning playwright Christopher Demos-Brown. Playing November 7 – 24, 2013 in the intimate Carnival Studio Theater (Ziff Ballet Opera House), FEAR UP HARSH marks Zoetic Stage’s much-anticipated return to the Arsht Center for its fourth consecutive season. This production will also launch the company’s 2013-2014 season as part of the Arsht Center’s highly acclaimed Theater Up Close Series which features artistic collaborations from stellar local theater ensembles and nationally acclaimed theater companies.

Fear Up Harsh is sponsored by Robin Ellen Meyers and presented with the support of the GLBT Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation.

Tickets to Fear Up Harsh are $45*, and may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org.

Fear Up Harsh, directed by Zoetic Stage Artistic Director and Silver Palm Award-winner Stuart Meltzer, makes its world premiere after receiving critical praise during its recent work-in-progress presentation at the Arsht Center’s 2013 Miami Made Festival.

“I am thrilled to be opening Zoetic Stage’s fourth season at the Arsht Center with a brand new play from Christopher Demos-Brown. I had the opportunity to direct the play in an early reading and the audience was completely wrapped up in the story and its characters. FEAR UP HARSH is a sharp, intelligent play about our time in history and the people that serve this great country of ours,” said Meltzer.

“Fear Up Harsh continues to carry out the central theme of our 2013-14 Theater Up Close Series with its gripping tale of myth versus tragic history, and how that dynamic changes dramatically depending on who gets to tell the story,” said Scott Shiller, executive vice president of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “In addition, we’re thrilled to continue our longtime creative partnership with Zoetic Stage. We’re certain Christopher Demos-Brown’s celebrated storytelling style, coupled with his extensive research and personal interviews with veterans, will leave South Florida audiences thinking about the nature of how we view our modern heroes.”

Fear Up Harsh examines how awards and commendations corrupt those who get them, those who give them, and those of us who worship them. In his latest drama, Demos-Brown tells the story of U.S. Marine Captain Robert Wellman, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who has everything he’s ever wanted. His daughter is matriculating into the Air Force Academy and he owns a lucrative chain of do-it-yourself home improvement stores. However, his idyllic world is threatened when a former comrade shows up on his doorstep and challenges everything he’s built his life around by revealing the truth about his past.

Zoetic Stage was founded in 2010 to produce contemporary plays and musicals that reflect the South Florida community and resonate universally, with a strong commitment to developing new work. The company will co-present four exciting productions in the 2013-2014 season. Following its season opener, Zoetic Stage’s series will continue with Stephen Sondheim’s killer Tony Award-winning musical ASSASSINS, January 30 – February 23, 2014; Clark Gable Slept Here, March 20-April 6, 2013, a world premiere satire from five-time Carbonell Award-winning playwright Michael McKeever; and The Great God Pan, May 22-June 8, 2014, Amy Herzog’s critically-acclaimed drama.

The most romantic place to bike in South Florida

Brian and Naomi at the Sea Ranch Center
A little romance at the Sea Ranch Shopping Strip in Sea Ranch Lakes along our bicycle adventure on A1A.

This past Sunday night, my fiancé, Naomi and I embarked on a 65 mile bicycle journey along A1A from Parkland to Coral Gables. The propose of the trip: to see if we could do it.

I will preface this by saying that I’ve made October my personal “No Car, No Facebook Month”, also to see if I could do it (more on this in a future post). Naomi was gracious enough to go along with my scheme to bike the entire east coast of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. We live in the middle of suburban Coral Gables, and regularly bicycle commute as far as Little Haiti, Wynwood, Downtown and Miami Beach, but by no means, had we been training for a long distance ride like this one.

2. Are artists and individuals required to have insurance? Find out the facts to avoid penalties and fines.
3. What is the deadline that everyone must be insured?
4. What are the options for health insurance and coverage? Learn the details about the types of coverage available and how artists and arts employees can find affordable care.
5. What resources are available to help navigate the new health plans and to find the ones that are right for you.
6. Do you qualify for a subsidy or tax credit? Many people are eligible for a subsidy in the cost of coverage depending on your income level and other factors.

For Arts Groups and Employers
1. What does health care reform mean for nonprofit groups?
2. Is your group eligible to get money back? If your organization pays the health premiums for your employees you might be eligible for a credit or subsidy based on the size of your staff, salary levels and insurance costs. Learn how to qualify for money back.
3. What facts should groups provide employees? As a nonprofit your arts group is responsible for letting your employees know what your business offers them in terms of health insurance and what their options are. We will provide sample notices and provide you with the tools to explore your options.
4. Is my group required to provide health insurance coverage?

This forum will cover all the aspects of the new insurance options and help you understand what your options are. This is crucial information for artists and art organizations. Participants will also receive a checklist and a tool box of resources to help them navigate the brave new world of affordable options. The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is proud to present the return of the triple platinum-selling The Idan Raichel Project, an ever-changing ensemble of multicultural performers from Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and more, led by internationally-acclaimed singer-songwriter, producer and musician Idan Raichel. Launching the Center’s 2013-2014 Live at Knight Series, The Idan Raichel Project will perform hits such as “Mi’Ma’amakim” and “Boee,” as well as new songs from his album Quarter to Six on October 17 at 8:30 p.m. in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall.

“We look forward to welcoming The Idan Raichel Project back to our world-class stage. Raichel’s cross-cultural music is beautifully inspiring and is a perfect fit for South Florida’s robust multiethnic community,” said John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “At a time when headlines are dominated with news of war, it’s artists like Idan Raichel that remind us to celebrate cultural diversity.”

Since the release of its debut self-titled album in 2002, The Idan Raichel Project has been known for its fusion of Israeli pop music with Middle Eastern, African, Indian and global sounds. More than a decade later, Idan Raichel’s unique musical style and ability to collaborate with a variety of artists continues to make an impact – earning him one of the biggest-selling records in Israeli history and also catapulting him into a major figure in the international global music scene.

“If I had called the album just ‘Idan Raichel,’ people would have thought that Raichel is the main voice on all the songs. I wrote the songs and I arranged and produced them, but I perform them together with other vocalists and musicians. On the other hand, we are not a group. It’s something in between,” explains Idan Raichel. To date, more than 95 singers – ranging 16 to 91 years old – from dozens of different countries and cultural backgrounds have participated in the Project’s recordings or performances.

The Idan Raichel Project’s most recent album, Quarter to Six (2013), reflects on how to find peace at the end of life. The artist describes the album’s title as a metaphor for a crossroads within his own life – a time where he felt his Project had reached a period of change, reflection and transition. Musically, the record is more acoustic than his previous ventures and blends his mellow voice with electronics and a diverse lineup of world musicians such as Portuguese fado star Ana Moura, Palestinian-Israeli singer Mira Awad, German counter-tenor Andreas Scholl, Colombia’s Marta Gómez, Vieux Farka Touré and a selection of some of Israel’s top up-and-coming singers and musicians.

Prior to the release of Quarter to Six, Idan Raichel released four studio albums and a 3-CD collection of live recordings, launched a North American tour with longtime collaborator and Grammy Award winner India.Arie, and celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Idan Raichel Project with a series of sold-out concerts held at the Caesarea Amphitheater, an ancient Roman amphitheater near Tel Aviv. Idan Raichel has also had the privilege to perform at a Nobel Peace Prize awards ceremony and for President Obama at the Kennedy Center on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In addition, the Project has headlined some of the world’s most prestigious venues including New York’s Central Park Summer Stage, Apollo Theater, Town Hall and Radio City Music Hall; Los Angeles’ Kodak Theater; the Sydney Opera House; Zenith and Bataclan in Paris; London’s Royal Albert Hall and many international festivals.

Miami High rollers and starlets will join gala chair ladies; Patricia Mederos, Kimberly Criser, Leatrice Damus, Connie Danluck, and Gretchen Kirtley, for a fun-filled evening of dining, dancing and wagering at a silent auction with such exciting prizes as a luxurious Chinchilla fur stole, valued at $1800.00, to benefit YPO’s mission of furthering opera education in South Florida. Also in the cards is a special tribute to Past President and Life member, Louise Todaro, who devoted 53 years of service to the organization, helping many of YPO’s education programs, especially the very successful In-School Opera Program.

“Every year, the YPO Gala is a must-attend social event which benefits an exceptional arts organization, and our 2013 Gala will truly be a night to remember,” said Patricia Mederos, President of YPO. “We are so grateful to this year’s gala sponsors without whom YPO would not be able to further its mission of opera education.”

Founded in l955, YPO is supported by a group of women who work without staff to advocate educational music programs and the Florida Grand Opera, the gala’s proceeds will fund music and opera educational programs, including a Girl Scout Workshop for more than 500 Girl Scouts and an annual teachers’ workshop which offers continuing education credits for 150 Miami-Dade and Broward County teachers on opera education in the classroom. Each year YPO’s dedicated group of volunteers brings professional children’s opera performances to more than 25,000 elementary school students. They also fund a national Voice Competition, which awards scholarships to gifted young opera singers.

Friends of St. Jude (FOSJ) Miami, the young professionals dedicated to raising awareness for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s mission, and chaired by Jeb Bush Jr., invites the South Florida community to the sixth annual International Dermatology “It’s All About the Kids” event, presented by the Andrés Asion Foundation.

“We are excited to host another successful event, to ensure children battling cancer and other life-threatening diseases have the opportunity to receive the treatment and care they need,” said Jeb Bush Jr., chair of FOSJ. “Thanks to our partners and South Florida’s ongoing support, Friends of St. Jude has been able to raise more than $600,000.00 to benefit thousands of patients; ensuring that none of their families ever receives a bill from St. Jude for their treatment, medicines, travel and lodging costs.”

During the event, guests will have the opportunity to savor an exquisite tasting menu and sip delicious cocktails, donated by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, while enjoying special music performances by The Culture Band and DJ Irie. “It’s All About the Kids” will be hosted by award-winning journalist and anchor of Univision Network’s news-magazine show Primer Impacto Pamela Silva Conde, and co-anchor of “The Morning Show” on Fusion, a new cable network for multi-cultural millennials, Pedro Andrade. This year’s “It’s All About the Kids” presenting sponsor is the Andrés Asion Foundation. “What St. Jude does for the advancement of cancer research is priceless. Giving life changing opportunities to children all over the world!” commented its founder, Andrés Asion.

Silvia Trinidad, from International Dermatology Research, Inc., will be recognized for her unwavering, life-long commitment to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Throughout the years, Silvia has been a relentless advocate in the fight against pediatric cancers worldwide.

“I’m honored to have been selected as this year’s honoree, and applaud St. Jude for their tireless mission to offer all children with cancer and other diseases the care they need to live,” declared Trinidad, who serves as president and research director of said organization. “It’s important for all of us to know, however, that our work doesn’t end here. We must continue to help advance treatment and research that will get us closer to a cancer-free future for our children.”

Miami, the city known for it’s sunny climate, attractive beaches, entertainment, beautiful people and international art fairs, is now getting ready for an inspiring cultural and art filled weekend during Downtown Art Days 2013 (www.dwntwnartdays.com). Celebrated pop artist and city local, Leonardo Hidalgo (www.leonardohidalgo.com) will present his new collection of paintings, Go With a Smile, a series of forty-eight visually striking large format paintings of superheroes, gangsters and icons, with the spotlight on Batman and the Joker. Kickball with Cannonball 9/21/13

Kickball with Cannonball
Saturday, September 21, 2013 — 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
water balloon kickball 5CIFO Parking Area
1018 N Miami Ave.
Miami, FL 33136

Free and Open to All

In celebration of Miami’s Downtown Art Days, friends and family of Cannonball and The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) gather for a non-athletic, not-so-neighborly game of kickball. To beat the heat, this year we’re throwing in water balloons!

While the teams hustle for the esteemed “best baller on the block” award, the public is invited to give their favorite team an edge by pelting opposing players with water balloons.

Join The Game! This event is free and open to the public. Water balloons will be available for a suggested donation. Rules and regulations will be posted on site.

Perrier will provide complimentary refreshments, while food trucks by Purple People Eatery and Fireman Derek will be on site. In addition, Deferred Archive, the grants and commissions program exhibition at CIFO, will be open for public viewing.

Launched in 2012, Downtown Art Days offers over 125 events and special projects related to art and culture. Art Days has something for everyone from family activities, panel discussions, international exhibitions, bike and walking tours, and more. For event details CLICK HERE.

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 2002 by Ella Fontanals Cisneros and her family to foster cultural exchange among the visual arts. CIFO is dedicated to the support of emerging and mid-career contemporary multidisciplinary artists from Latin America, who are challenging the established boundaries that define much of contemporary art today.

Based in downtown Miami, Cannonball (formerly LegalArt) is a non-profit arts organization known for its advocacy and innovative programs supporting today’s artists. Core initiatives include: SeminArt, providing free educational and professional development services to artists; LegalLink, an in-house legal advice and referral service for artists and arts organizations; and the Residency Program, which offers long-term live/work space for local artists and short-term residencies for visiting cultural producers.

Come out , drink, have fun and support Tree of Life — Donate whatever you want at the door and get a free “Blackbird” cocktail. 2 for 1 drinks through happy hour. Music to follow. Come out, have fun, have some drinks and do good!

Help our foundations (Krane, Inc and New Light Foundation), go forward with their theatre/arts program -Tree of Life. Join us on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Blackbird Ordinary – 729 SW 1st Avenue, Miami, Florida 33130 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

The mission of Tree of Life is to teach underprivileged and homeless teens and pre-teens (ages 10-17), how to take an idea for a play from its seedling phase to the stage. Using the power of story, autobiography, and the art of collaboration, students will learn what it means to workshop a play. Some will take on the role of set designer, others of costume; some will be actors, others directors. Some will even help with the production and the public relations aspect of production. All the while, students will be working with professionals in the field — working actors, writers, directors, producers. Often, these workshops take place as summer seminars and/or year-long conservatories that can be out of reach for low earning or poverty level families. We believe that everyone should have access to art and everyone should have the right to make art, if the passion lies within. Even if that passion has been, thus far, unrecognized. It is our goal to make that desire to create bloom; to illustrate, through hard work, the power of art — whether that art be visual, performative, or musical . Because art does, indeed have power — the power to change people and change the world through empathy, thought, and catharsis.

EVENT ADDRESS:
Park Place By The Bay
915 NW 1st Ave.
Miami, FL 33136
Apt #H2814

The location for “Art Will Save You” is a private residence, on the 28th floor of the Park Place By The Bay tower. It is the home of Lucas Monsalve, a close friend of artist Renda Writer.

When you arrive at the main entrance, just tell the doorman that you are here to see Lucas Monsalve. You don’t need to (and shouldn’t) say anything about a “party” or “art show.” You’re just “here to see Lucas.” ;)

You can also bypass the whole doorman scenario by entering through the side entrance. If you would like to do this, just send a text message to Renda Writer (310-404-4184) or Lucas (786-693-0743) saying that you are downstairs, and someone will come down to get you.

– Metered parking located in the streets surrounding the building. Also, a small parking lot with metered parking and about 30 spaces at the building. Don’t forget to pay your meter.
– Located within walking distance of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs, such as Will Call, Club Space, Mekka, America Airlines Arena, Adrienne Arsht Center.
– Located within a short driving distance of Wynwood Arts District, Midtown, etc.

Over 250 pieces of art will be on display and available for sale at a series of Saturday night private art shows that will take place in September, on the 14th, 21st, and 28th of the month.

The three private art shows, located at a private residence in downtown Miami, are scheduled to run from 7pm until 12am each night and are open to art buyers and art appreciators of all ages who RSVP with an email to privateartshow@gmail.com.

All RSVP emails must state (1) the number of people in the party (2) full names for everyone in the party (3) the date of the show they’d like to attend, and (4) time of arrival (between 7pm and 12am). Within 24 hours you will receive an email response to confirm your RSVP and reservation that will contain the address for the event and information for parking, directions, etc. Please include a phone number to receive a text message reminder the day of the event.

All attendees for all three private art shows will receive one free art print (while supplies last). Limited free refreshments will be available. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. Most of the art on display will be priced between $10 and $50, with a few pieces priced between $300 and $500, and one piece that is $2,000, so there is something for everyone and everyone’s individual budgets.

All of the art on display is the work of Renda Writer, a known figure on the South Florida arts scene for almost a decade. Renda has played many roles in the local art scene, including spoken word poet, art magazine vice president and chief editor, as well as producer, host, and promoter of art and music events and open mic nights. He added “visual artist” to the list of roles he plays when he first started making art in late 2010, or, as Renda puts it, “I started making art when everything else stopped making sense. Art became my catharsis when everything I knew started to shift.” After nearly three years of creating, Renda is now ready to exhibit his entire body of work.

Most of the art on display will be what Renda Writer calls his “Handwritten Found Object Art.” This is his own personal take on the found object art genre. He writes on what he finds… a BMW hubcap, an air conditioning vent, a few metal reel-to-reel plate, some random street signs, a calendar from the salon industry, tons of furniture wood, chunks of drywall, some old records, a ceiling tile, a kitchen cabinet door. These are just some of the things that Renda has repurposed with the written word. He uses various colors of paint markers, and writes poems, phrases, aphorisms, and stream of consciousness musings that convey ideas and themes of wit, hope, humor, and curiosity.

In addition to the “Handwritten Found Object Art,” Renda will also be exhibiting three other styles of art, which include (1) his line of “Renda Writer Jewelry,” words and ideas written on necklace charms, (2) pieces from his original “Handwritten Art” series from 2010-2011, framed sheets from a small yellow legal pad, covered with poetry and stream of consciousness thoughts, all written in blue ink, in his signature small handwritten print and (3) pieces from the “Renda Hitz Hearts” collection, an ongoing collaboration project with his friend, Billy Hitz, where the two men create eye-catching heart-shaped pieces of art and interior design accents out of carpet.

Renda is naming the private art show series “Art Will Save You” because, as he says, “Art has saved me in many ways… ways I can’t even really explain. To me, that’s what art does. It saves you. It saves the artist who makes it, the people who view it, and the people who buy it and incorporate it into their homes, and their lives. It changes you, influences you, inspires you, and… saves you.”

Atrio welcomes Miami Spice and other delectable cuisine By Betty Alvarez

Ario Restaurant and Wine Room is located in Conrad Miami Hotel’s Lobby Level 25 showcasing panoramic views of the Miami cityscape and bay. It’s a beautiful restaurant served as an appetizing allure to try the latest culinary delights in the Miami Spice and the a al carte menu.

For starters, a variety of warm bread was served along with an adequate portion plate of orange butter, mango butter, and a splash of Olive oil. We needed a second serving of the oil because the flavor had the perfect touch of what an olive oil needs to have. It was great complimenting the bread. I ordered a crisp Chardonnay. An excellent choice considering the cuisine we were about to eat. The mango butter was a first for me as I never tasted such richness and was a bit sweet. Yes, it did have a mango flavor but not too intense. Created by Chef Virgile Brandel, it was delish start that I had seconds! The orange butter was good but to my palate, it had more of the plain butter taste. Since I am more of an Olive Oil fan, I loved the type they served. It was from the Hacienda G Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil Blend which made you want to taste some more.

A variety of appetizers was served. From the A la Carte Menu, I ordered the Red Snapper Ceviche infused with Aji Amarillo, Cilantro, Ginger, and Yuzu. From the Miami Spice menu, one of my friends had the the Salmoon & Grouper Carpaccio served with shaved Bottarga & fine herb sorbet and the other had the Goat Cheese Salad with roasted beets and pecans. They both looked tasty and the presentation was excellent. My ceviche was the right portion and a great refreshing starter to wet my appetite for what was about to come.

As we entertained ourselves in the normal buzz of our lives, our entrees came. I ordered the Grilled Grouper dish that came with crispy yucca fries, pickled green papaya salad, and piri piri sauce under it. When I saw the pickled green papaya salad, I was scared. Anything with the word pickled meant to me lots of salt and processed. Although I was surprised when I tasted it. It just did not taste like a pickled green papaya but the onions that accompanied it really made the difference in the taste. The Piri Piri was a red sauce that I tasted with the grilled grouper. My friends ordered the Seared Scallops with Cauliflower mouseline, Cardamom cloud from the Miami Spice Menu. Also the Mushroom Cannelloni with a creamy gorgonzolla sauce also part of the popular annual menu. OK I tasted a bit of each. The seared scallops had a nice cooked flavor while the mushroom cannelloni was a warm pasta with the right portion.

Now lastly, dessert. An array of selections was served from the Miami Spice menu. Peach Trifle with Amaretto whipped cream layers; Farm Goat Cheesecake with raspberry coulis; Exotic Virgin Daquiri which had a mixture of Passion fruit, mango and kiwi with champagne granite which is more like a sorbet. This last one was rather refreshing and it was like tasting a champagne ice cream. However, the real kicker was the Warm Doughnut Bread Pudding. OMG! I wanted to order one for my own!! Each time I bite into one of these, I was in heaven as I tasted the warm and moist delicacy topped with a honey syrup that is to die for. If you get a chance to get it please do even if it is not in the Miami Spice menu.

After a successful inaugural year, the Miami Downtown Development Authority (Miami DDA) is working once again in tandem with a variety of arts and cultural institutions to highlight the area’s cultural renaissance through its second annual DWNTWN Art Days Event. The Miami DDA, through Creative Curator Claire Breukel and the Cultural Advisory Group, is partnering with virtually every major art and culture institution in Downtown Miami for a three-day celebration that will incorporate numerous free events and exhibitions for the community to enjoy.

The events will take place around all of Downtown with one central informational hub at Grand Central Park at Miami Worldcenter where attendees can pick up a full list of activities and begin their tour of Art Days events.

This year, Car2Go and BeachedMiami are partnering with DWNTWN Art Days to host tours around Downtown Miami venues and the exhibitions. Car2Go will host a tour by vehicle for quick and easy access to Art Days events. BeachedMiami along with Deco Bike will be providing bicycles and arranging bike tours of temporary Art Days art projects as well as permanent Downtown artworks.

Artist Thom Wheeler is also conducting a series of walking tours around some of Downtown Miami’s most exciting artist studios and exhibition spaces. Wheeler will give visitors an insider look in to the work of artists at the DWNTWN Art House at Miami Worldcenter, the Artisan Lounge, and to individual studio spaces.

In addition to the tours, the Miami Trolley will make stops at several key Art Days venues in Downtown. The Trolley route will be published on the Art Days website www.dwntwnarts.com closer to the event.

Since their inception in 1999, the traditional Cuban Son ensemble Conjunto Progreso, has taken audiences back in time to the nostalgic era of early Cuban popular music. Led by Johnny Aguiló, son of Cuban trumpet legend and band leader Rolando “El Ruso” Aguiló, Conjunto Progreso has grown from a quartet, to its recent incarnation of eight members. In 2004, Conjunto Progreso released its long awaited debut album titled Masters of Cuban Son, featuring an array of songs by legendary Cuban composers Nico Saquito, Miguel Matamoros, and Compay Segundo. The album was honored by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences with a 2006 Grammy Award Nomination under the category of Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album. www.facebook.com/conjuntoprogreso

PALO! is a favorite among South Florida’s live music devotees and in 2012 was named Miami New Times’ BEST BAND in the Readers’ Choice Awards. The group plays a style of extremely danceable music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk”. Their appeal lies in their unmatched musical energy, catchy original songs, and amazing display of impromptu virtuosity. A mix of Latin and Urban sounds gives PALO! their unique, infectious style. Formed in 2003, when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment, PALO! combines Cuban music with funk beats. PALO has performed for packed houses at New York’s legendary SOB’s, Ryles Jazz Club and Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston, and the Chicago Folk and Roots Festival. The band often appears at venues throughout South Florida. Their first CD, “This Is Afro-Cuban Funk” is available on gopalo.com as well as in music stores, on iTunes and other digital stores. www.GoPalo.com

Photographs of Bazaar Noir sponsored by Dos Equis at Grand Central

Love, Hope, Strength invites you to a night of culinary oddities, exotic beasts, and enigmatic strangers. Grand Central was transformed into a market inspired soiree guaranteed to test your wits and tempt your senses. Sip on complimentary Dos Equis as live music and unexpected encounters transport you to the Bazaar Noir.

We received these cute little passport cards that we took with us to every station to have punched.  It wasn’t that easy though. You had to try one of the “culinary oddities” or perform some task in order to get your card punched. Once all four corners of the card were punched out, then you were invited to the special secret room to view a performance.  Slits in a wall revealed a mirrored room with a dancing phoenix that seemed to perform JUST for you, like a pervy peep show. It was difficult to describe, so you’ll have to see for yourself… or ask me sometime.

The event was such a blast. We really enjoyed the musical stylings of The Candy Shop Boys. They played an eclectic and provoctive mix of muic and genres. I especially love how they cover tunes in new and interesting ways.

We were are all about partying for a purpose.  That’s why we are happy to find out that Love Hope Strength was behind all the the peculiar partying. Love Hope Strength (LHS) an international, music-centric cancer charity dedicated to saving lives, one concert at a time. Their mission is to save lives, right now, with the advances that have already been made in cancer care.

So, how does one become a marrow or blood stem cell donor?

It is a painless and simple procedure to get registered.  You fill out a quick form, have your cheek swabbed. The cells are taken and sent to a lab to be tested to determine your tissue type.  Your data is then entered into the National Marrow Donor Program registry. No worries. It’s anonymous.

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Deferred Archive Awards Grants and Commissions Exhibition Opening 8/28/13

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation Deferred Archive Awards Grants & Commissions Exhibition Opening
August 28th
Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation
1018 North Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33136

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) is proud to announce Deferred Archive as this year’s Grants & Commissions Program exhibition. As it is customary, the winners are part of the annual exhibition dedicated to the program at the CIFO Art Space. This year’s exhibition will open to the public from August 28th to October 27th.

The tenth edition of CIFO’s Grants & Commissions Program features newly commissioned works by Jorge Mendez Blake (Mexico), Milena Bonilla (Colombia), Miguel Calderon (Mexico), Antonio Caro (Colombia), Benvenuto Chavajay (Guatemala), José Gabriel Fernandez (Venezuela), Sofia Olascoaga (Mexico), Manuela Ribadeneira (Ecuador), Laureana Toledo (Mexico) and Santiago Villanueva (Argentina).

Deferred Archive refers to the idea that memory is constructed retrospectively – not from past to future, but from future to past, so that the events that we experience are not fixed in time, but fleeting from one subject to the other.

In Hal Foster’s Return of the Real, he looks to Freudian theory of deferred action to recover psychoanalysis as a model to understand how we construct the history of avant-garde art. According to Foster, Freud’s theory of deferred action is seen as an event that is recorded as traumatic when a subsequent event retroactively recodes it. Foster, in turn, proposes that the significance of the events of the avant-garde occurs in a similar way by a complex alternation of anticipation and reconstruction. Thus we see what happens when artists work with the idea of the archive. The archive becomes a distinct model in understanding how memory is constructed.

The idea of the deferred archive represents the artist looking back, activating past events and classifying them in order to understand a particular moment, as if revisiting the event with the perspective of today gives it the opportunity to really exist; a type of documentation that allows for memory to be created within the now – or, memory according to a later experience. The artist uses this model as a way of recognizing that memory is always something in the making. By looking to the past, the artists participating in CIFO’s 2013 Grants & Commissions Program are not searching for a memory, but rather creating a memory through documentation/archiving. The act of post-event documentation (or belated documentation) therefore becomes the deferred archive.

“CIFO remains committed to maintaining investment and supporting contemporary artists from Latin America,” said CIFO Founder Ella Fontanals-Cisneros. “In the tenth edition of the Grants & Commissions Program, we are very proud to honor this year’s award recipients who are creating some of the most challenging and innovative work today. These awards serve as a testament to the artists’ skill, creativity and vision.”

CIFO’s Grants & Commissions Program offers opportunities to up to six emerging and three mid- career contemporary artists from Latin America as well as an annual Achievement award, recognizing the contributions of established artists who would benefit from significant international exposure and recognition. The funds awarded in the Grants and Commissions program are given directly to the selected artists in order to develop their pieces, providing more flexibility for the artist. The artists are nominated each year by CIFO’s Honorary Advisory Committee of leading art professionals, curators and artists from Latin America, the United States, and Europe. After a rigorous review process, the recipients are chosen by the Selection Committee and ratified by CIFO’s Board of Directors. Having already benefitted over a hundred artists during its ten years, the Program has been known to springboard recipients into the next level of their careers.

This year, CIFO has partnered with Cannonball, an Artist Residency based in Downtown Miami, to award one of the artists in the Grants & Commissions Program with a two month residency. CIFO’s Board of Directors selected Benvenuto Chavajay from Guatemala for the residency where he will spend the months leading up to the exhibition focusing on creating his project.

By looking to the past, the artists participating in CIFO’s 2013 Grants & Commissions Program are not looking for a memory, but rather creating a memory through documentation/archiving. The act of post-event documentation (or belated documentation) therefore becomes the deferred archive.

Guru Rugu’s Massage Workshop for Artists
massage catsSaturday, July 13, 2013, 3:00-7:00 PM
Cannonball
1035 N Miami Ave, Suite 301
Miami, FL 33136
$FREE

Please plan to be prompt and to attend the entire workshop – no latecomers.
Space is limited to 16 attendants. RSVP is required by 5:00 PM on July 12 to splash@cannonballmiami.org. Please indicate if you will be attending solo or with a partner.

This basic training will develop your rudimentary massage skills by exploring simple strategies for the use of hands, fingers, forearms, and elbows, and for listening through touch. Massages will occur while seated in chairs, and will not involve any additional equipment, creams, or oils. Participants will remain clothed throughout the training. Arriving solo is totally fine, but if rubbing strangers or semi-strangers seems odd, feel free to bring a partner you trust.

Tea and water will be provided, but please BYO snacks.

Adam Overton is an experimental artist, and certified massage therapist (since 2007) living in Los Angeles, California, and a visiting resident at Cannonball through mid-August. His work involves performance, writing, experimental music, massage, and workshops, in formats that involve audience participation in order to facilitate odd and intimate artist‐led experiences. Overton works closely with Guru Rugu as co‐director of the experimental meditation center of los angeles and as a ghostwriter for Guru Rugu’s Experimental Meditation Hour on KCHUNG Radio.

The experimental meditation center of los angeles has no permanent location, and will be based in Miami throughout this summer. Adam Overton and Guru Rugu takes the role of artist-as-facilitator, offering small group meditation sessions, each of them of different nature. These sessions are not the traditional “therapeutic” meditations, but rather repurposed spiritual, religious, and physical forms of playful yet profound meditation, offering a safe environment for “something else” to happen. Experimental meditation sessions will be held at non-traditional locations throughout the City, and will be free and open to the public.
For more information about the artist, please visit plus1plus1plus.org.
