Teatro Prometeo’s is the product of the artistic vision of Teresa María Rojas and the pedagogical vision of Miami-Dade College President Eduardo Padrón. Throughout the years, Prometeo has featured many Miami and U.S. premieres of local and international playwrights. It has also carried out programs specifically for all audiences and ventured into performances in non-traditional theater spaces such as community centers, the street, and public transportation. Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This month we covered  Understanding Grants for Artist.

About Joshua Kingston:
Joshua Kingston was raised in a military family, moving often and quickly learned to adapt and connect with people. He studied Theater, Music and Literature in college and has worked as a Vet Tech and a Software Developer before settling in to his true calling, writing. Always feeling the need to have more knowledge, he went back to school to obtain a Masters in Theology.

Today, he writes helps artists verbalize their art into statements and galleries develop catalog material while his passion is the challenge of grant writing for both individual artists, projects, and small/mid-sized Arts organizations.

About Eleazar Delgado Studio:
Originally conceived at our home, Eleazar Delgado Studio has always been the artist’s creative space. The idea grew into a gathering place for our friends, mostly artists in their own rights, to showcase their current work and preview concepts. We made it official in 2010 when we opened a public space in Wynwood. Today in addition to being Eleazar’s personal art studio, we host local talents and leaders who need a professional environment to showcase, educate, and enrich the community at large.

About the Art/Work Connections Program
The Art/Work Connections program is a monthly series of business seminars held at galleries and art spaces around South Florida targeted at artists and those working in the arts. Everyone is welcome and can benefit from them. Business professionals are brought in to cover a wide variety of topics including health care, financial planning, contract negotiation, copyright law, portfolio development, social media, marketing and much more.

How might we design more participatory creative moments in Miami? Join us for a community conversation and brainstorm.

Miami’s art community is growing and changing every day, helping to build a more vibrant and expressive city. Yet for many of us, our experience with that community is mostly one-way interactions, as audience or viewer or supporter. Participatory art invites people to join in the process of creating a work—whether it’s painting, performance or experiment—and can transform people’s ideas of art and their relationship with the local artistic community.

Join the Arts and Business Council of Miami and WhereBy.Us for an evening of inspiration and community creativity as we brainstorm ideas for building participatory artistic experiences in our city. We’ll hear lightning talks from local artists, innovators and creators, and then break into small groups to create new ideas we might build together. The most promising ideas will be eligible for small funding that can help make them happen.

Food, drink and live music will be on hand. Food and drink begin at 6pm; speakers start at 6:30; our brainstorm starts at 7:15. Anyone and everyone is welcome.

We look forward to seeing you!

GO GO MOAD! Pop Up Kids Programs at MDC Museum of Art + Design, Creative Kids Project: Andy Warhol

Kids ages 6-12 are invited to tour The Influencers II exhibition and learn about the elements of art by painting, drawing and sculpting in the style of renowned artists in the exhibition. Parents and visitors are encouraged to stay and create a special project with their children based on the legendary artist Andy Warhol.

Renowned artist Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in the working-class neighborhood of Oakland in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At an early age, he was afflicted with a rare neurological disorder which pushed him to take comfort in a world of his own within celebrity magazines and DC comic books. As a young adult, he experimented with several invented adaptations of his own identity. In this exploration, he decided to drop the “a” from his last name upon moving to New York.

Warhol graduated with a degree in Pictorial Design from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949. New York proved to be a successful move for Warhol as he found abundant work as a commercial artist. He worked with posh companies such as Columbia Records, Glamour Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, NBC, Tiffany & Co., and Vogue. Warhol established his career as a praised graphic artist then shifted his focus to painting and drawing. Warhol’s paintings and prints grew to incorporate the techniques he developed as a commercial illustrator. In 1956, The Museum of Modern Art included him in his first group show.

It was the work he produced in the 1960’s and early 1970’s that solidified Warhol as a national icon. Becoming the symbol for the movement Pop Art, Warhol is best known for his iconic paintings of Campbell’s soup cans, Coca Cola bottles, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe.

“The Last Builder” creates a connection between a body builder and the Panama Canal. The video shows “the last builder” brought from Jamaica to Panama, who worked on the Canal since he was 15 years old.

“Sugar Cane Alley” focuses on the teenage life and adventures of young José who lives in a shanty-town on Martinique in the mid-’30s. José lives with his grandmother and is well aware of the French colonial presence but they are far away from his world. He gets into mischief, learns valuable lessons on living from an old former slave, gets drunk, and sets fire to one of the run-down shanties. Regardless of his pranks, José never gives up on his studies. At the end, his diligence pays off.

“Archivo” is a hilarious compilation of short videos that reinterprets notorious incidents in Puerto Rican popular history. Beatriz Santiago Muñoz employs friends and non-actors in reenactments of some memorable incidents that happened on the island, such as the shooting of the legendary outlaw Toño Bicicleta. Drawing from subjective memories and the acts of ordinary people, this early work captures the ironies and contradictions of a collective and popular history in Puerto Rico.

“Memories of Underdevelopment” tells the story of Sergio, a wealthy bourgeois aspiring writer who decides to stay in Cuba, even though his wife and friends flee to Miami. Sergio considers the political changes on the island as he juggles two girlfriends. This is a complex character study of alienation during the turmoil of intense social and political changes experienced in Cuba in the 1960s. Memories of Underdevelopment is narrated from a highly subjective point of view in which the main character tells the story in fragments, resembling the way memory functions.

“Stories from Surinam” reflects on the story of 34,000 Indian laborers who, between the years of 1873 and 1916, left India to work on Dutch plantations in Surinam.

“BIM” is a movie that portrays the complex relationship between blacks, Indians and whites in Trinidad and Tobago prior to the independence movement of 1962. It focuses on the life of Bheem “Bim” Singh, an Indian boy living in Trinidad, who is sent to live with his aunt after his father, a trade union leader for sugar-cane workers, is shot to death during a wedding. At his new school, Bim is isolated and picked on by the black students because of his “coolie” (Indian) heritage. As tension builds during his very first day he stabs one of the students as a means of defense. This incident gets Bim kicked out of school and his aunt’s home and he is forced to live a life of violence and crime to survive, but then rises to prominence as a trade union representative for the Indian sugar-cane workers.

Free with museum admission.

“Making History” focuses on a conversation between cultural critic Edouard Glissant and Linton Kwesi Johnson, the first black poet to have his work published in Penguin’s Modern Classic Series. The exchange takes place in New York during the summer of 2008.

“Haitian Corner” is an early film by Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck tells the story of a Haitian immigrant and poet in New York who becomes obsessed with finding the man who tortured him during the Duvalier Regime. Convinced that his torturer is also living in New York, this tormented individual delves into situations that complicate his personal and professional life.

With introduction by University of Miami Associate Professor, Patricia J. Saunders, Ph.D

“A Natural History 5 Sequence 2” is a series of short video animations that presents a contemporary perspective on Jamaican culture and its diaspora. Oneika Russell, a young Jamaican artist, draws from art history and literature to create digital animations rooted in Jamaica’s colonial past and pop culture.

With a significant amount of its actors being real life popular reggae artists, “Rockers” is a Jamaican film, that along with “The Harder They Come” (1972), introduced reggae music to the world. The movie tells the story of Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, a drummer living in a ghetto of Kingston, who decides to make extra money by selling and distributing records to help his fellow musicians, but is confronted by local gangsters.

Free and open to the public

‘Dad, what is a financial crisis?’ Without trying to be funny, I said, ‘it’s something that happens every five to seven years.’
â–ª Jamie Dimon, CEO, JPMorgan Chase

It’s time to smash our concept of debt…and dance!!! The Financial Meltdown begins with Cannonball Artist-in-Resident Cassie Thornton leading an open public forum about the effects of debt on the unconscious, its ability to cross class divides, and its terrifying social impacts.

Audience members will join Thornton in conversation with selected professionals working within the realm of finance and who, over the course of Thornton’s one-month residency, participated in “Debt Visualizations”—a hypnotherapeutic process facilitated by Thornton to imagine a physical form of debt. The discussion will reveal a collective experience of debt as a psychological, emotional, and intellectual force that affects all of us, regardless of class or income.

Following the public discussion, guests will release their debt-related frustrations by pummeling large-scale piñatas—a tree, a thorny rose, a cloud, a menacing monolith, etc.—that embody ideas and feelings of personal debt. The ensueing relief will result in a Financial Meltdown (a.k.a. dance party).

About Miami Spice
The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau organizes Miami Spice, a mouthwatering restaurant promotion that showcases the best of Miami cuisine. During August and September, restaurants offer three-course meals featuring signature dishes created by world-renowned chefs. It’s a tropical fusion of ingredients that makes Miami an epicurean paradise.

About Share Our Strength
Share Our Strength began in the basement of a row house on Capitol Hill in 1984, in response to the ‘84-‘85 famine in Ethiopia. Brother and sister Bill and Debbie Shore started the organization with the belief that everyone has a strength to share in the global fight against hunger and poverty, and that in these shared strengths lie sustainable solutions. Today we focus these strengths on making No Kid Hungry a reality in America. We’re ending childhood hunger by connecting kids to effective nutrition programs like school breakfast and summer meals. This work is accomplished through the No Kid Hungry network, made up of private citizens, government officials, business leaders, and others providing innovative hunger solutions in their communities. These partners work together, implementing solutions that break down the barriers that keep kids from healthy food. Through its Cooking Matters program, the No Kid Hungry campaign educates and empowers low-income families to stretch their food budgets so their kids get healthy meals at home. Cooking Matters participants learn to shop strategically, use nutrition information to make healthier food choices, and cook delicious, affordable meals. The No Kid Hungry campaign works to shine a national spotlight on the crisis of childhood hunger in America, creating a powerful movement of individuals committed to bold action. We build partnerships that enlist influential individuals in the cause and advocate policy changes needed to achieve our goals.

While enjoying Miami’s skyline, and public transit system, the goal of TrepTransit is to promote a free-wheeling exchange of ideas, discussion, and knowledge. This first goal is to allow companies to ask questions about current issues they are facing, and get meaningful answers from experienced operators. It’s like having your own Board of Directors, but instead of the board room, in the MetroMover.

The second goal is to share knowledge from a variety of subjects that are relevant to business regardless of stage. With the goal of skills sharing, an expert on a relevant subject or vertical market will share his/her knowledge. The ultimate goal of this exchange is to allow participants to consider new ideas, encourage discussion, and adoption of best practices, especially as it applies to entrepreneurs (Treps).

Join us for TrepTransit II as we ’embark’ on a mobile journey in support of all things entrepreneurs, business practices and startups.

Orchestra Miami performs “Masonic Mozart” at Miami’s Historic Scottish Rite Temple
The first in Orchestra Miami’s Discover Miami Through Music Series

Miami’s Scottish Rite Temple: You’ve driven by it a million times passing through downtown, marveled at its lovely & exotic Art Deco exterior, but have you actually been inside? Finally, here’s your opportunity with Orchestra Miami’s inaugural concert of the Discover Miami Through Music series, a series of concerts in Miami’s most interesting and historic landmarks.

The inaugural concert, entitled “Masonic Mozart” is an all-Mozart concert inside Miami’s iconic Scottish Rite Temple. One of history’s most celebrated Masons, Mozart wrote numerous pieces for Masonic Ritual, for his Masonic brothers or based on Masonic symbols. “Masonic Mozart” is your opportunity to hear some of this great music performed in the setting for which it was intended.

The program features Orchestra Miami’s principal clarinetist Richard Hancock in Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet, K. 622 and special guest Dr. Tony Boutté as the tenor soloist in Die Mauerfreude, a cantata for tenor and orchestra. The concert opens with the gorgeous Overture to Die Zauberflöte (the “Masonic”opera) and closes with Mozart’s greatest symphonic achievement, the “Jupiter” Symphony N. 41, K. 551 in C Major. The 39 musicians from Orchestra Miami will be led by Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi. Following the concert, Miami’s acclaimed historian Dr. Paul George will talk about the Scottish Rite building and the historic Lummus Park neighborhood.

LEAVE A LEGACY© will honor Miami Dade College President Eduardo Padrón with the Community Champion Award at the 16th Annual Donor Next Door Luncheon.

LEAVE A LEGACY© established the Community Champion Award to honor individuals who contribute to the non-profit community and have shown a great commitment to Miami-Dade County through their activism to help the community’s most vulnerable.

Padrón, who was named one of the top 10 college presidents in the United States by Time Magazine, is known for revolutionizing the role of a community college by raising academic standards, offering four-year degrees and a competitive honors program. Today Miami Dade College has more than 170,000 students and graduates more minorities than any other college in the country.

At the Donor Next Door luncheon, City Year Miami Executive Director Said Ishoof will receive the Ruth Shack Leadership Award, which is given to an emerging leader who represents the qualities of ethics, dedication and service embodied by The Miami Foundation’s former president. City Year Miami currently works with students in 17 public schools – elementary, middle and senior high – in Miami-Dade County.

“At City Year, we want to challenge the culture of philanthropy in Miami,” said Isoof, who has been leading the organization since spring 2009. “We need their support to double our impact and play a bigger role in the lives of more students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.”

The Donor Next Door Luncheon will also honor leading patrons for their philanthropy to 31 charities.

The Center for Literature and Theatre at Miami Dade College (MDC), in collaboration with Books & Books, will host New York Times bestselling author Michael Pollan.

For the past 25 years, Pollan has been writing about the places where nature and culture intersect. In Cooked, Pollan explores the previously uncharted territory of his own kitchen. He discovers the enduring power of the four classical elements – fire, water, air, and earth – to transform the stuff of nature into delicious things to eat and drink. Apprenticing himself to a succession of culinary masters, Pollan learns how to grill with fire, cook with liquid, bake bread, and ferment everything from cheese to beer. In the course of his journey, he discovers that the cook occupies a special place in the world, standing squarely between nature and culture. Both realms are transformed by cooking, and so, in the process, is the cook.

To receive a voucher (admission for one) to attend the event, purchase a copy of Cooked ($17 + tax) at Books & Books in Coral Gables, Miami Beach or Bal Harbour Shops. Attendees must show voucher and receipt to enter the event. For more information, contact Books & Books Coral Gables at 305-442-4408, or visit www.booksandbooks.com.

Artist Naomi Fisher whose photograph in the permanent collection is on view in “AMERICANA: Desiring Landscape” speaks briefly about the role of the natural world in her imagery and introduces “Black Narcissus” (1947), a film of her choice which reflects similar ideas in the exhibition.

“Black Narcissus” (1947)
United Kingdom. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. 101 minutes
This academy award winning Powell and Pressburger classic is set in a community of nuns struggling to establish a convent high in the Himalayas. Their spiritual aims are hampered by the arrival of a beautiful native girl and a young general, while isolation, extreme weather, altitude, and culture clashes all conspire to drive the well-intentioned missionaries mad. Winner of two Oscars for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.

The “Desiring Landscape” gallery considers how representations of the landscape have been a means to explore human desires-from the sensual and sexual to the materialistic-to alternate interpretations of history. In correlation to the film, a brief, free public tour of “Desiring Landscape” and “Edouard Duval-Carrié: Imagined Landscapes” will also be offered at 6:30pm.

Free with museum admission. Seating begins at 6:30pm. Introduction and film screening begins at 7pm.

Tensions between Hispanics and blacks and the way it could affect international commerce will be addressed during a joint meeting between the Miami-Dade County Black Affairs Advisory Board and Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board.

Residents are invited to participate in a village dialogue called “A Civil Discourse on Cultural Diversity, Race and Inclusion,” on Wednesday, May 7, from 1-4 p.m. in the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW First St., Second Floor Commission Chambers. A panel of Miami-Dade-based professionals and prominent community advocates will engage on controversial topics, a statement announcing the meeting said.

“The ethnic and racial differences in Miami-Dade County have periodically created intergroup tensions. In a community like ours, being a global center and international hub with a direct impact on regional and international commerce, it is important that these issues be addressed. We believe that this discussion will allow residents the opportunity to address longstanding and divisive issues, discuss their feelings and clear up misunderstandings. We believe that every group brings something to the table and that it is necessary to acknowledge our differences and work toward capitalizing on our diversity while encouraging inclusiveness,” said Stephen Hunter Johnson, Black Affairs Advisory Board Chair.

The Black Affairs Advisory Board and the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board are housed in the Office of Community Advocacy and are charged with the responsibility of identifying issues of concern and making recommendations to the Miami-Dade Board of Commissioners as they relate to understanding and resolving issues affecting their County-wide constituency.

This year, Aqua Girl will host its first ever “aquaSOUNDS” fundraising concert to benefit Aqua Foundation’s LGBTQ Youth Homelessness Initiative. The concert will take place at Grand Central on Saturday, May 17th, just before the infamous Temptation dance party.

All bands featured in the concert are from South Florida and are connected to the local LGBTQ community. The local bands will warm up the crowd for headliner Beverly McClellan of NBC’s “The Voice” who will perform as the closing act. A soulful rock singer with honest lyrics and a raw sound, McClellan plays more than 10 instruments and has already released five independent albums since her appearance on the hit show.

The Aqua LGBTQ Youth Homelessness Initiative funds crucial services for the homeless LGBTQ youth population in Miami-Dade County. As much as 40% of the homeless youth population in Miami-Dade is LGBTQ. This means that compared to the general population, the LGBTQ community is vastly over-represented among the homeless youth population.

“AquaSOUNDS” is made possible through the generous support of Perennial Strategy Group and BB&T.

CIS of Miami’s largest fundraiser is their annual gala, and this year’s event slated for Saturday, April 26th will be a black-tie affair to remember, commemorating CIS of Miami’s silver anniversary and 25 years of service in Miami-Dade. The theme of the gala is “an evening among the stars”, which pays tribute to the CIS of Miami students (stars) who have successfully graduated high school since the organization’s inception. Features live music, student performances, dinner, and silent auction.

Full: Every nine seconds of each school day, a young person drops out of high school in the U.S., and nearly one-third fail to graduate on time. For the past 25 years, Communities In Schools of Miami (CIS of Miami) has been a driving force in collaborating with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to improve educational outcomes by providing free programs and tools to keep students in class and on track toward graduation.

About the Art/Work Connections Program: The Art/Work Connections program is a monthly series of business seminars held at galleries and art spaces around South Florida targeted at artists and those working in the arts. Everyone is welcome and can benefit from them. Business professionals are brought in to cover a wide variety of topics including health care, financial planning, contract negotiation, copyright law, portfolio development, social media, marketing and much more. awc.lifeisartfest.org

“Caribbean: Crossroads of the World,” opening April 18, 2014 at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), explores the diverse cultural history of the Caribbean and its diaspora, highlighting over two centuries of rarely seen works dating from after the Haitian Revolution to the present. The exhibition is the culmination of nearly a decade of collaborative research and scholarship organized by El Museo del Barrio in conjunction with the Queens Museum and The Studio Museum in Harlem. The Miami presentation, curated for PAMM by guest curator Elvis Fuentes, is a honed reiteration of this critically-acclaimed survey and offers a vital reflection of Miami’s Caribbean community. The exhibition is the centerpiece of a season at PAMM dedicated to Caribbean art, which includes related exhibitions, a two-day symposium, a Caribbean film and video series, major new performances and other related programs and events (pamm.org/calendar).

The event is open to all ages.

Records stores may continue to dwindle in number and vinyl may be going the way of polar ice caps, but that cannot stop the growing international phenomenon that is Record Store Day. This year, the wax aficionado holiday lands on April 19th and one of Miami’s top live music venues Grand Central will host an event to honor Miami’s great music mom and pop shops and chains past, as well as some of the more prominent acts to emerge from the area, including Nuclear Valdez, Charlie Pickett, Jim Camacho of The Goods and Forget the Name – all for a great cause.

“It’s ironic that as the number of records stores continues to fall, Record Store Day continues to gain more momentum,” says event co-organizer and music business mainstay Alex Jimenez. “I’m excited not only about continuing the legacy established by notable record stores like Peaches Music, Specs Music, Q Records, Yesterday & Today Records, Open Books & Records, Blue Note Records and others, but to help raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s disease and research.”

Jimenez was in part inspired by former Peaches executive and colleague Alan Jackowitz’s diagnosis and subsequent struggle with Parkinson’s.

Nuclear Valdez rose to regional and national acclaim in the late 80’s with the release of I Am I on Epic and the radio and MTV hit “Summer.” Axe man Charlie Pickett’s band The Eggs were hailed by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke as a “brawling-roots mix of Johnny Thunders, Sun Records and trailer park Lou Reed” and by R.E.M.’s Peter Buckas “one of the undiscovered giants of the late eighties.”

Singer / songwriter / playwright Jim Camacho first came to regional and national prominence with The Goods, who were signed to Polygram Records and were featured in the music doc Tom Dowd and the Language of Music. Forget the Name enjoyed a nine-year run during the late 80s and early 90s, developed a strong following in Miami, toured the east coast and released three full-length albums of material.

There will be a special music photography digital expo curated by yet another music insider, photographer and Dig Under Rock blog head Tony Landa. The works of Jill Khan, Mindy Hertzon, Karen Widen, Laura Kokus andTeajay Smith will be shown throughout the event.

A record collector’s “swap meet” will kick off the event with top dealers offering highly prized collectibles. “This sort of blows up the concept of the Saturday morning swap meet at an area hotel conference room bringing it into an environment that really suits it well,” states Jimenez. Interested record dealers please email alejim@aent.com to reserve your table now.

veritagemiamiVeritageMiami brings together more than 4,000 wine and food lovers for four days of culinary indulgence. Since its inception, VeritageMiami has raised more than $12 million for the community. All proceeds support United Way of Miami Dade’s work in education, financial stability and health.

VeritageMiami is proud to announce its presenting sponsor City National Bank and that five of Miami’s most talented chefs will headline its signature Interactive Dinner on April 11, at the InterContinental Miami. Considered one of the year’s most unique culinary experiences, guests will team up and cook a five-course meal under the tutelage of the distinguished chefs, recently deemed Miami’s culinary “New Guard” by INDULGE Magazine: Alberto Cabrera of Bread + Butter, Todd Erickson of HaVen South Beach, José Mendín of The Pubbelly Restaurant Group, Giorgio Rapicavoli of Eating House and César Zapata of The Federal Food, Drink & Provisions. The chefs will bring their unique flavors and backgrounds as they guide guests in preparing the different courses, with Johnson & Wales culinary students serving as sous chefs and sommeliers. All proceeds benefit United Way of Miami-Dade.

“City National Bank is committed to giving back to the communities we serve, and United Way – because of its sustainable impact in the areas of education, healthy and financial stability – is the centerpiece of our efforts,” City National Bank President and CEO Jorge Gonzalez said. “As a community bank it is also great to support a festival that celebrates South Florida’s burgeoning food scene and these talented young chefs who have been hailed as the city’s new culinary guard.”

Alberto Cabrera is the executive chef of Bread + Butter in Coral Gables, where the Miami native embraces his Cuban-American roots – taking traditional dishes and revamping them by adding a modern spin, such as his Chicharron De Puerco with a truffle-black bean puree. Cabrera learned the art of cooking as he moved up the ranks at notable kitchens including Robbin Haas’ Chispa and the Miami extension of Madrid’s La Broche. At Bread + Butter, Cabrera infuses the carefree charm of Cuba’s mambo era with the modish slant of the modern American gastropub.
Todd Erickson is the executive chef of HaVen South Beach on Lincoln Road, a futuristic electric lounge offering innovative cocktails and some of the most refined food in the city. At HaVen, Erickson takes local, organic ingredients and transforms them into a variety of global small plates from crudos to duck sliders. Erickson got his culinary start at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and from there went on to open a catering company and three four-star restaurants in Dallas, Texas. After having such a successful start with HaVen, Erickson and the Haven Hospitality Group opened Huahua’s Taqueria just down the street. Erickson has also announced HaVen will be expanding this spring to include a full dinner menu.

José Mendín is the director of culinary operations for The Pubbelly Restaurant Group, the team who many Miami foodies credit for the local chef movement. Mendín, a graduate of Johnson & Wales University, worked for many well-known restaurants including Nobu and Sushi Samba, before opening Pubbelly Gastropub in Miami Beach with his Pubbelly Group partners Andreas Schreiner and Sergio Navarro. Since then, the Pubbelly Group has experienced incredible success and has expanded to include four more restaurants – PB Steak, Pubbelly Sushi, Barceloneta and the newest, L’Echon Brasserie. In 2012 and again this year, Mendín was distinguished as a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef South, and most recently won Miami Cochon 555, a regional all-out pork cooking frenzy, and will compete in the Grand Cochon competition this summer.

Giorgio Rapicavoli is the executive chef of Eating House, the innovative pop-up restaurant turned Coral Gables mainstay. Rapicavoli burst onto the Miami food scene when he became the first Miami chef to win Food Network’s “Chopped” television competition. After winning the competition and $10,000 prize, Rapicavoli and business partner Alex Cassanova opened the Eating House pop-up. The venture was so successful that Eating House eventually opened as a full-time establishment at its original location in Coral Gables. In 2013, Rapicavoli was distinguished as a James Beard Award Rising Star chef semifinalist. Rapicavoli is also nominated for Culinary Innovator in this year’s ZESTtm Awards at Johnson & Wales University.

César Zapata is known as the “Stove Master and Pig Whisperer” of The Federal Food, Drink & Provisions. Before opening The Federal, Zapata changed the way South Floridians thought about food by opening Miami’s first pop-up restaurant, Phuc Yea!, in 2011. After its widespread success, Zapata and his business partner/wife Aniece Meinhold opened The Federal on Biscayne Boulevard. Since opening, The Federal has received praise from major publications such as Food & Wine Magazine and USA Today. As their next venture, Zapata and Meinhold are in the process of relaunching “Phuc Yea!” in a permanent location.

Now on display, FACADE

Facade: Historic Downtown Miami in Line Drawings, by author Damir Sinovcic, is a portrait of the architecture and development of Miami’s city center and its vicinity during the early twentieth century. Though many buildings erected during that period have been demolished or significantly altered over time, some of the most prominent structures still remain. Based on the book, the Miami Center for Architecture and Design, along with the Downtown Development Authority and author Damir Sinovcic, have created an exhibition that depicts many of Miami’s historical buildings. Free viewing Monday thru Friday, 10am – 5pm.

“Facade: Historic Downtown Miami in Line Drawings features downtown Miami buildings erected around the time of the Miami Land Boom. The book’s geographical focus encompasses the city center and neighborhoods north and east of the Miami River, as well as certain buildings north of the central business district, including Overtown and the neighborhoods near Biscayne Boulevard….

Over time, and often in the name of progress, many of Miami’s early twentieth century buildings have been demolished. Although this book could easily have been dedicated to all the great buildings that no longer exist, it celebrates those important structures that have endured.” – Damir Sinovcic, Author

Street art in Miami has exploded in popularity in recent years, with the Wynwood neighborhood becoming one of the area’s major attractions for both tourists and locals. Local artist Brandon Opalka, who curated the exhibition, says artists he recruited to participate are honored to have a museum legitimize their work.

Some of the artists that contributed exclusive works for the exhibition include 2alas, Lo Castro, George Sanchez-Calderon and the MSG Crew.

Get ready to dance your pants off!!! the Hongs live at Will Call – Friday, March 28th.

Formed in 2008 by Jamaican-born musician Gordon Myers this multinational rock electronic group has become one of the most popular bands of the Miami music scene.

Quite accidentally, The Hongs band members are a multinational fusion: Jamaican, French, Mexican, Jewish, Costa Rican, Scottish, Cuban & Argentinean.

The Hongs blend elements of electro-pop with a dash of nuwave to create a sweet sugary pop-rock-disco. Spreading the dance / rock / house / electro hybrid one toe at a time…
“There is something very delicate and ephemeral about the Hongs. Their music sounds like something that reverberates in hallways in those moments before sleep hits.”

Third Annual PhilanthroFest to Take Place April 12, Connecting Thousands of South Floridians to Over a Hundred Local Nonprofit Organizations and Community Agencies in a Family Friendly Festival

Free outdoor event promises day of family-friendly fun while raising nonprofit awareness, promoting civic engagement and connecting the community to nonprofit resources at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus

PhilanthroFest, the nation’s largest festival of its kind, is back and promises to be bigger and better than ever. Fulfilling the mission of its namesake organization, this year’s PhilanthroFest helps bridge the gap between local nonprofit organizations and members of the community – making it easier to get the help you need or give the help you can provide.

For Miami residents who are interested in donating time or money to help those in need, PhilanthroFest provides the opportunity to learn more about local nonprofits and meet the people behind them face to face. PhilanthroFest also serves as a nonprofit marketplace, raising awareness of the services and benefits that nonprofits and community agencies are able to provide.

Now in its third year, PhilanthroFest proves that community engagement can be fun. The outdoor festival is free and open to the public, and intended to be enjoyed by people of all ages. Festival attendees can enjoy a full day of art exhibits, musical performances, demonstrations, health screenings, a green market, food trucks, and an assortment of other activities that everyone in the family can appreciate, courtesy of PhilanthroFest’s community partners.

While taking part in the many activities, South Florida residents can learn about all kinds of nonprofit organizations representing all sorts of causes, including business and economic development; education; animal welfare; arts and cultural development; environmental issues; food, agriculture, and nutrition; civic engagement; health and disease prevention; youth activities, sports and recreation; and community improvement. For South Florida residents who have been looking for a chance to pay it forward, there is no opportunity like PhilanthroFest to find the nonprofit that’s right for you. Members of the community have the opportunity to sign up to volunteer or make a donation right on the spot.

And for those who may be in need of such services, nonprofits and community agencies are on hand to explain who they serve, what they do and how one can qualify for such services. It has never been easier to find out the wide array of services that South Florida community agencies and local nonprofits have to offer. PhilanthroFest is the largest nonprofit festival in the nation and the largest gathering of its kind.

HistoryMiami’s newest exhibition, featuring Miami-inspired murals by Miami-based artists, is now open to the public.

Called Some Like It Hot, the exhibition is the first major museum/gallery showcase of Miami’s burgeoning street art scene, and was curated in collaboration with some of the art forms’ local pioneers and trailblazers: 2alas, Lo Castro, Tati Suarez, Erin Odea and the MSG Crew to name a few. Each contributed original works for the exhibit, inspired by Miami’s history.

Street art in has recently exploded in popularity and is now a definitive part of the cultural fabric in today’s Miami. The murals and outdoor pieces that dot the Wynwood/Midtown area have become major attractions for both tourists and locals alike, and have helped revitalize a once forgotten neighborhood. However, the impact the art form, and the nameless artists creating it (largely for free) have yet to be recognized by major galleries and museums in the area…until now.

General museum admission is free for HistoryMiami members and children under 6. Admission for adults is $8, seniors and students are $7 and $5 for children 6 – 12 years old.

Miami International Film Festival premiere of Deep City: Birth of the Miami Sound at The Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center on 3/14/14

Miami International Film Festival premiere of Deep City: Birth of the Miami Sound at The Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center on Friday, March 14, 2014.

Movie  synopsis: “A celebration of Deep City Records, an independent label behind some of the richest music of South Florida’s soul music scene in the 1960s, this homegrown Florida story resurrects a piece of our nearly forgotten history in a rock-and-funk documentary from local filmmakers Marlon Johnson, Dennis Scholl, and Chad Tingle. Immensely talented producers and musicians such as Willie Clarke, Clarence Reid, Johnny Pearsall, Helene Smith, Betty Wright and others created and fought for a unique Florida sound in the 1960s.”

Deep City: “Birth of the Miami Sound has a compelling and galvanizing story to tell, but the zinger of this experience is the force of its soundtrack. To this day, the “Miami sound” remains wholly infectious and contagious, and to celebrate the accomplishments of the amazing musicians from a half-century ago, we will lift the screen following the end of the film for an on-stage party with DJ Spam putting a modern spin on the old Deep City sound. Complimentary beverages courtesy of Stella Artois and overflowing food stations will keep the party going, and several Deep City originals will be on hand in person. – Jaie Laplante.”

As you may have heard, SAVE and the ACLU of Florida have announced the filing of a groundbreaking lawsuit on behalf of eight married couples to secure recognition from the state of Florida for same-sex marriages performed out-of-state.

A pro-equality ruling would grant gay couples married in states that perform same-sex marriages access to many rights and benefits that Florida grants to opposite-sex married couples, such as Social Security survivor benefits and the right to include your spouse on your health insurance policy.

It’s our pleasure to invite you to SAVE’s annual Champions of Equality awards reception and gala, where we will honor the eight brave couples taking a stand for equality in court.

SAVE is also proud to honor State Representative David Richardson, County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson, and filmmaker Joe Cardona.

We hope you will join us in honoring these trailblazers on May 9th. Buy your tickets today!

This month, Anthony Jordon, professional photographer and social media expert, will teach you all about Instagram, one of the fastest growing social media platforms.

As a primarily visual and aural medium, Instagram is an excellent promotional platform for artists, moviemakers, musicians and performers. It is also rapidly expanding in use among the younger demographic. Do you use Instagram to promote your work? Do you know how to gain new fans and make new connections? What are the best filters or add ons? How do you make great videos on Instagram? Can you make collages or other special effects? Now is your chance to learn to use this amazing and versitile platform.

Anthony Jordon is a Miami-based photographer specializing in engagement, destination wedding, event/social, and portrait photography. In 2013, Anthony organized two major international photography events in Miami; The Scott Kelby Worldwide photowalk, the first of its in Downtown Miami, and Help Portrait Miami, partnering with the Miami Rescue Mission. Anthony has been an online moderator for Cloak Inc.’s One 12 Haiti Solidarity Virtual March, as well as a guest speaker for Photovoice. Credits include Instagram Ambassador for Scope Miami 2012, Heineken Murals/Heineken Light Project Social Media Ambassador Miami and Washington, DC (2012-2013), photographer for Eleazar Delgado, JLPR, Red Bull, GLAAD, Absolut, and Muscle Milk just to name a few. Anthony’s work has also been published in the Miami and Broward-Palm Beach New Times, Miami Magazine, miamiartzine.com and he is a current contributor to Soul Of Miami.

6-Show SXSW Alt Country / Bluegrass act, The Defibulators hit Miami for a performance Tuesday Night show at Will Call Miami.

Miami’s own gem, Los Bastardos, kick off the night!.

“The Defibulators (not defibrillators) hail from Brooklyn, New York’s thriving indie scene and they’ve developed a funky, rootsy, out-of-control sound that’s all their own. The six-man, one-woman band blends bluegrass, country, honky tonk, rockabilly, Dixieland jazz, punk, and maybe a touch of anti-folk into an intoxicating, good-time mélange that’s guaranteed to slap a smile on your face. Roots-heavy, post-punk music that reinvents the conventions of country music with a CBGB-meets-Grand Ole Opry feel.”

The Artisan Lounge presents “Meditations,” a solo exhibit featuring a dozen timeless and classically inspired paintings by artist Vesna Vera. Works of art such as Rising Star and The Hour Glass, which visually transports viewers into a state of internal reflection, comprise the theme of this open-to-the-public exhibition. Through the medium of oil on canvas, Vera’s aptly named “Meditations” series uses bold colors to convey mysterious yet ethereal notions of spiritual transcendence.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Vera studied art extensively both in her native country, as well as in Miami, New York and Italy. Based in Miami, the mid-career artist has displayed at countless galleries and fairs throughout Florida, New York and overseas over the course of the past two decades. She has been featured in such notable publications as The Miami Herald and El Universal, and was also interviewed by Univision several times. She also holds the honor of being named “Distinguished Artist” by the city of Miami in 1988.

For the opening of his solo exhibition, Imagined Landscapes, Miami-based, Haitian-born artist Edouard Duval-Carrié discusses his new work with PAMM Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander.

The dialog will address Duval Carrié’s shift in aesthetic, using an uncharacteristically dark palate, as well as how he translates his references, 19th century paintings depicting Florida and the Caribbean, into his own contemporary visual language. The artist’s response to the role of images of tropical paradise, both historically and today, in obscuring economic and social disparities will emerge from the conversation.

Free with museum admission. No registration required.
Seating begins at 6pm.

Every third Thursday evening, PAMM brings together an eclectic range of internationally-acclaimed DJs and musicians for an outdoor music series on the terrace by the bay. This month, PAMM Presents Brooklyn-based duo Gatekeeper.

Inspired by the sounds and visions of forgotten b-movie film scores, classic fantasy games and lurid arcade imagery, the duo of Aaron David Ross and Matthew Arkell have created their own morbidly compelling discotheque, a vividly detailed flight of fancy in which the conventions of techno, Chicago house, italo-disco and industrial are transfigured into a singular phantasmagoric adventure populated by hushed screams, Gregorian dungeon chants and cinematic washes of mammoth sound.

Drawing from an expanding palette of innovative sounds, these musicians instrumentalize breath, mouth, and vocal chords to engage the physicality, variation, and sensuousness of the non-lyrical voice. C. Spencer Yeh (Brooklyn) and Stine Janvin Motland (Oslo/Berlin) improvise and compose, using the voice as a sound-making device that lies outside of speech acts and traditional modes of singing.

Established artists among a younger generation of experimental musicians, Motland and Yeh’s practices have historical precedence in movements of musique concrete, and perhaps sound poetry. Their use of non-linguistic vocal sounds in composition and improvisation may be compared to the approaches of concrete poets, who sought to elevate text above that of an impartial actor within the communication process.

Equality Florida Miami Gala Voice For Equality Award to Actress Sharon Gless 3/16/14

Equality Florida Miami Gala Voice For Equality Award to Actress Sharon Gless
Sunday, March 16, 6 PM
Pérez Art Museum Miami
1103 Biscayne Blvd
Miami, FL
Tickets are $150, with sponsorships beginning at $500.  For tickets or further information, go to www.eqfl.org/miamigala, or call (813) 870-3735.

On Sunday, March 16, Equality Florida Institute will present the Voice for Equality Award to multi- award-winning actress Sharon Gless and the six couples who have joined Equality Florida Institute as plaintiffs in a lawsuit to overturn Florida’s ban on marriage equality.  The awards recognize the recipients’ steadfast commitment to LGBT equality and will be presented at the Equality Florida Miami Gala at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, 1103 Biscayne Boulevard.
In a year that has seen many landmark milestones and victories, the Gala will provide the LGBT community and their allies a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the momentum that is building throughout the state and throughout the nation.

“My role in Queer as Folk was a life-changer for me,” said Gless.  “I thought I was totally aware of what it must be like to be gay.  I knew nothing.  Being ostracized; not being given the same rights that I enjoy.  It’s insane.  I knew then that I wanted to become active and do what I could to help. Everyone should be treated equally and be given the same privileges – including the right to marry.”

A part-time resident of South Florida for more than 20 years, multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winner Sharon Gless has been a vocal advocate for the LGBT community for many years.  In 2013 she took a leading role in Equality Florida’s Get Engaged campaign, a statewide public education campaign to build support for marriage equality in Florida.  She served as Grand Marshal in the Miami Beach Pride Parade, received the Gay Icon Award at Philadelphia QFest, the PFLAG Ally award in Toronto and was honored by L.A.’s Gay & Elder Housing.  Norman Lear’s People for the American Way also recognized her for her unwavering support of human rights and she is an active participant in the ongoing struggle to prevent the overturn of Roe vs. Wade.

"There are many celebrities who call Florida home, and we call on them to join Sharon Gless in publicly expressing their support for equality," said Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida. "We are at a tipping point in the movement for LGBT equality, and the voice of allies like Sharon Gless can make a huge difference in educating the public."

Following last summer’s historic Supreme Court decision on DOMA, Equality Florida issued a call for potential plaintiffs to join with Equality Florida in a lawsuit seeking marriage equality in Florida.  More than 1,000 people responded by signing on to GetEngaged.org.  Following months of vetting and personal interviews, the six plaintiff couples were chosen.  They are:  Catherina Pareto & Karla Arguello, Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez & David Price, Vanessa & Melanie Alenier, Todd & Jeff Delmay, Summer Greene & Pamela Faerber, and Don Price Johnston & Jorge Isaias Diaz.

“These six couples have committed to a life in the spotlight, putting themselves and their families under intense scrutiny as the court case progresses,” said Nadine Smith.  “They are brave, and they are courageous, taking this important step so that they, and thousands of other couples in Florida, will have the right to marry the person he or she loves.”

As the community celebrates the milestones already achieved throughout the state, Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida, will present perhaps one of the most significant State-of-the-State addresses ever, honoring those who have worked so hard to make these achievements a reality, as well as outlining the work that is yet to be done.

Guests will also enjoy sumptuous hors d’oeuvres and an open bar, along with music from Grammy award-winning saxophonist Felipe Lamoglia, all taking place on the expansive terrace with panoramic views of Biscayne Bay.

Recognized as an “architectural tour de force,” the Pérez Art Museum is the ideal venue for the Miami Gala, which has blossomed into a “must attend” event that brings together nearly 500 of South Florida’s community and political influencers.

Acclaimed electronic musician and composer Daniel Lopatin – Oneohtrix Point Never – performs for the first time in Miami. For his highly-praised, most recent release, R Plus Seven, Lopatin assembles the sounds of corporate design – the sort found in commercial transitions, background music, and instructional videos- into songs that are as moving as they are conceptual. Awe, doom, and wonder arise from a range of referents – pipe organs and horns to the abstract, synthesized cues for soundtracked emotions.

This performance will feature a live improvised mix of visuals created by video artist Nate Boyce. His CGI forms, some appearing as modernist sculpture or consumer products, mutate and morph in disorienting virtual space. As with Oneohtrix Point Never, Boyce uses found text, the names of towns made enigmatic and website banners cut up and layered throughout like visual poetry. The duo have toured together extensively performing together at venues, including MoMA/PS1, Walker Art Center, and Wexner Center for the Arts.

Geoff Dyer will outline ideas behind and inspiration for “The Ongoing Moment,” particularly his idiosyncratic categories for organizing photographic images. Tracing some examples of particular tropes, hats for example, Dyer will ask what larger lessons can be learned from indexing photographs in a way that veers from traditional art historical chronologies and taxonomies. What is the further potential of this method? Does it reveal something about the way photographers work, about a collective optical unconscious?

“The Ongoing Moment is a masterful meditation on photographs, but what makes it particularly valuable is the way it shows how Dyer has mastered the art of the essay, understood as a piece of discursive, personal writing, in which great, often melancholy themes are raised with lightness and very dry humour.” Alain de Botton, Books of the Year, Observer

“The Ongoing Moment” is available for purchase at the PAMM store. In advance of the talk, join a discussion group on “The Ongoing Moment.”

Free and open to the public. Space is limited. First come, first seated.

PAMM Free First Thursdays is sponsored in part by Knight Foundation.

Nick Curly’s Trust has gotten off to a great start with a much talked about party at BPM Festival in Mexico. The label come party brand can now unveil full details of the next event… Trust Miami will take place during WMC on March 24th at Electric Pickle, the famed American club that hosts the best events of the conference.

Running from 10pm – 5am, playing will be boss man, recent Defected In The House mix star and 8Bit label head Nick Curly himself, plus Visionquest’s Shaun Reeves, One Record boss Subb-An, Detroit legend Kevin Saunderson, Leftroom head honcho Matt Tolfrey, Culprit star jozif, Dame chief Bloody Mary and No 19’s Nitin.

Shaun Reeves is a key part of Visionquest. This collective of like-minded music lovers from Detroit have built their own musical empire since launching early 2011. With a label releasing the likes of Benoit & Sergio and Footprintz, plus their own melodic underground pop releases and all encompassing live musical extravaganzas at clubs and festivals all over the world, Shaun is a true scene pin-up.

Someone instrumental to the development of techno over the decades is Kevin Saunderson. A member of the Belleville Three, Saunderson’s legacy is ever secured thanks to his membership of Inner City whose seminal hit ‘Good Life’ will never grow old. As well as on his own legendary techno label KMS, Saunderson releases on Planet E among many others and is as relevant now as ever, playing the world’s leading clubs on a regular basis.

Leftroom is the London label run by Matt Tolfrey. Trading in a fine brand of modern house and tech, the label hosts parties all over theworld and is often amongst the most charted on sites like RA. Tons more talent including Subb An, jozif, Bloody Mary and Nitin are on hadn to ensure this Trust event is not a leap of faith but instead a sure fire winner at this year’s WMC.

Ai Weiwei’s documentary, Fairytale, will be featured in PAMM’s auditorium with special guided exhibition tours of Ai Weiwei: According to What? at 6pm and 8pm.

Fairytale, a documentary film by Ai Weiwei, chronicles the making of a work by the same name. In 2007, Ai Weiwei invited 1,001 Chinese citizens of varying ages and backgrounds to travel to Kassel, Germany, for one week each, all expenses paid. The extraordinary event of such a large group of citizens traveling outside of China, many for the first time, enabled Ai Weiwei and the participants to discuss questions concerning identity, memory, love, dreams and the possibility of cultural dialogue. This 152-minute film describes the many challenges facing the artist and his volunteers in coordinating the work.

The Center for Literature and Theatre @MDC welcomes Colombian Ex-President Andrés Pastrana as he presents Memorias Olvidadas (Forgotten Memories). Pastrana’s kidnapping by Pablo Escobar, and their long conversations; the origins of the “narcocassettes”, tape-recordings which probe how drug cartels bought the Presidential Election on 1994; the persistence of Ingrid Betancourt, which led to her kidnapping by FARC guerilla, and forgotten chapters with President Clinton and Fujimori, among others, are some of the themes discussed in this fascinating book. Memorias Olvidadas is a revealing, honest and controversial book that unveils some of Colombian History’s hidden truths.

Considering the way images are indexed in the current exhibition, Image Search: Photography from the Collection, PAMM and The Miami Rail select The Ongoing Moment by Geoff Dyer as the Winter Reading Art book. Focusing on the ways in which canonical figures like Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, Andre Kertesz, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus and William Eggleston have photographed the same things – barbershops, benches, hands, roads, signs – Geoff Dyer seeks to identify their signature styles. In doing so, he constructs a narrative in which these photographers – many of whom never met – constantly encounter one another.

This workshop will help writers develop specific skills to tell their personal stories with a crafted sensibility. Participants will learn to focus their narrative voice, find a story’s arc, and use scene, characterization, and dialogue to organize the raw material of their lives. Work written during the workshop will be discussed in a non-judgmental environment designed to support each other’s individual skills. We’ll explore the differences between autobiography and memoir and address the idea of self-disclosure. We’ll also discuss the “gray areas” of nonfiction, including the tension between emotional and factual truth, and ideas about truth telling for memoirists. All levels welcome.
