Premiere of this year’s Borscht funded short films at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts

The Borscht Corporation, is proud to announce The Borscht Film Festival 9, a 4-day event. Premiering at this year’s festival will be over 20 short films funded in part by the Borscht Corporation via The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The films will premiere at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, December 20th at 8pm.

The film festival’s slate includes works by both regional artists (local filmmakers Bernardo Britto, Julian Yuri Rodriguez, Monica Peña, Kayla Delacerda, Brian Deutzman, The Meza Brothers, and Bleeding Palm; street artist AholSniffsGlue; puppet and comedian Pepe Bilette) as well as national filmmakers (Ray Tintori, Terrance Nance, Jacolby Satterwhite, and more). The films will include feature appearances from Miami rapper Trina.

In addition to Borscht’s short film screenings, the Borscht Film Festival will also include a host of events including regional filmmaking screenings from the Miami Filmmakers Collective and Indie Film Club (and more), workshops, panels, a Downtown Miami film bike crawl, the launch of site specific film screening events Borscht Nites, Borscht multiverse theme parks at Young Arts, parties, and the premiere of Scarface Redux, a crowdsourced remake of the iconic Brian de Palma film, at Mansion Nightclub.

Some highlights include:
12/19: Papa Machete- the indigenous martial art created by Haitian slaves to defeat Napoleon’s army. Screening & master class in the ancient, dying art of tire machét, better known as Haitian machete fencing taught by Michael Dylan Rogers, one of the subjects of the film. Traditional Haitian lunch served after film screening. (A 2015 Sundance selection)

12/19: Hotel Intercontinental Take Over by Borscht Film Festival- no more Dancing Lady!

Little Strong: Jose El Rey Retrospective

Jose El Rey was a fictional recording artist active from roughly 2006 to 2009. Created and performed by Jose Flores in a series of live shows, albums, and web videos, Jose El Rey was a parody of Latin American machismo who became legendary for his drug-and-croquetta fueled concerts at the now-defunct PS14 and Vagabond spaces as well as befuddling Miami at large with impromptu performances on Calle Ocho and unsuspecting Cuban restaurants. He was also among the most notable early articulations of a uniquely Miami “spicster” culture: first generation Americans exploring their relation to their heritage through an ironically comic lens. While El Rey was murdered in 2009, his legacy lives on through his influence on the next generation of Miami creators. This program will be a screening of his works, footage from his live shows, and a conversation with Jose Flores himself as well as several surprise guests. Miami Museum of Science Planetarium, 3280 S Miami Ave Miami, 33129
A literary, cinematic, and musical celebration of Miami culture culminating in the launch of the El Viajero satellite, the first extra-planetary mission from Borscht’s Miami Aeronautics and Space Administration (MASA) division. This satellite will carry 305GB of Miami culture out of the solar system on a special hard drive and is expected to last approximately 2 billion years. Also: premieres of new short films by Adan Jodorowsky and others, interactive projections by Phenomenal Radness, a star show narrated live by Victor Vazquez (Kool AD, formerly of Das Racist), rare planetarium light shows, and a laser light show scored live by John Hancock III (formerly of ANR). Free beer courtesy of Pabst Blue Ribbon for those wearing space apparel.

The Miami premiere and official Criterion Collection 3-disk Blu-Ray release of Hector.LA by famous Hollywood director and local con-artist Nick Corirossi. Watch the film Roger Ebert called “flat-out the greatest movie ever made,” with the director present. He says he will berate you if you try to leave early or shift in your seat too much. Andrew Gerber used to be a fancy intellectual property attorney working for The Man. Now armed with their illuminati secrets, he has his own firm where he helps artists like Jillian Mayer and Bleeding Palm explore the ever-shifting landscape of fair use as well as representing artists like Ahol Sniffs Glue and Celia Rowlson-Hall on intellectual property litigation matters. In this panel he will be joined by fellow attorneys Jordan Fletcher (his colleague at his firm Kurshinsky Gerber PLLC) and Divya Jayachandran (IP counsel at NBCUniversal) to give a brief overview of IP law, fair use, copyright infringement, DMCA, trademark dilution, and how artists and filmmakers can avoid infringement and protect themselves from being infringed upon. Enjoy food, games, and rides as you explore five different areas of THE MULTIVERSE theme park: a psychedelic town square inspired by Adventures of Christopher Bosh in the Multiverse!, a virtual reality world, and a weird carnival, each designed by local filmmakers, as well as an emotional arcade and an outdoor cinema playing three programs of films:7:30 PM YoungArts Alumni Showcase: short films by National YoungArts Foundation alumni.
The National YoungArts Foundation identifies and supports the next generation of artists in the visual, literary, design and performing arts; assists them at critical junctures in their educational and professional development; and raises appreciation for the arts in American society.

Often working completely by himself since the mid-90’s, Michael has steadily built a body of work that defies categorization, exploring small punk subcultures in suburbs such as Cutler Ridge and Westchester and inspiring many prominent local artists along the way. The Borscht Corporation is a Miami-based non-profit that awards grants to local filmmakers and artists, throws events such as the quasi-annual Borscht Film Festival, and facilitates the creation of films, music videos, web experiments, and transmedia projects. Borscht has has facilitated the creation of several dozen films that have gone on to win Jury and Audience awards at national and international film festivals as well as Emmy and Telly Awards. The films have screened at hundreds of festivals around the world, including Sundance, Rotterdam, South by Southwest, Milan, AFI, Slamdance, New York, Los Angeles, New Zealand, Winterthur, Chicago festivals, as well as museums such as MoMA, New Orleans Contemporary, MAM, MoCA NoMi, and Guggenheim Museums in Venice, Bilbao, Berlin, and New York. Online, their work has received millions of views and been featured on the Vimeo homepage as Short of the Week, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Vice, Stereogum and has been named to multiple year-end top ten lists, including IFC.

The Borscht Film Festival is Miami’s quasi-annual local independent film fest. Borscht commissions and showcase films created by emerging artists that tell Miami stories, forging the cinematic identity of the city. Using a combination of awards, grants, and tax-deductible donations, Borscht green-lights and produces made-in-Miami films, then throws Miami’s cinematic event of the year to showcase them. The Borscht Film Festival has been called the “Miami’s alt-culture summit” as well as the “hippest, most eclectic and electric movie festival in South Florida” by the Miami Herald, and named “Miami’s Best Film Festival” by the New Times.
