Miami’s premier Design and Architecture Senior High marks the 10th anniversary of its annual Taste of Design in a new location with the return of an all-star line-up of local chefs.

This year’s festivities will be held in Paradise Plaza, the Design District’s new cutting edge take on art, food and fashion on Friday, January 26, 2018 from 7PM to 10PM. An extension of the popular pedestrian Paseo Ponti, the sculpture-filled plaza includes architecture by Daly Genik, Freehand Buck and MOS. In keeping with past events, the 2018 Taste menu will feature some of Miami’s hottest chefs, including James Beard finalist Brad Kilgore. A special item will also be offered during the annual silent auction: a rare, signed guitar by rock legend Tom Petty.

To celebrate ten years, the event will highlight the achievements of DASH’s remarkable alums as well as future grads.

Ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top high schools in Florida and the U.S. for the last decade, DASH offers a design-driven curriculum taught by industry professionals. Its location in the heart of the Design District provides students with a unique opportunity to see design in action. The annual Taste of Design serves as an important fundraiser to support critical programs, including Portfolio Day. Donations have also helped send dozens of students to important college prep programs around the country, including Parsons and the School for Visual Arts in New York.

Moving to Paradise Plaza puts this year’s Taste at the center of the district’s new cultural hub, providing an opportunity for an art-filled evening. Along the paseo connected to the plaza are sculptures and installations by John Baldessari, The Buckminster Fuller Institute, Konstantin Grcic, Zaha Hadid and Marc Newson. The Institute for Contemporary Art and de la Cruz art collection sit just around the corner.

The 2018 Taste menu features food from two of Kilgore’s new restaurants, Ember and Kaido. Kilgore has twice been nominated as James Beard Rising Star Chef and earned a best new

restaurant nod. Acclaimed chef Dewey LoSasso, who helped turn Miami into a food destination, will also provide dishes. LoSasso, who served as Donatella Versace’s personal chef, has helmed the kitchens at some of Miami’s leading restaurants including The Forge Restaurant/Wine Bar, Schnebly Winery and Miami Brewing Company, LaTour, and The Private Foundlings Club.

Along with the signed guitar, this year’s silent auction will include original artwork, jewelry, dining, spa treatments, home and garden items, skin care goodies, and tickets to major entertainment events.

The menu includes a variety of savory dishes and chef’s selection for dessert. The Chef updates our menu often, to provide a range in your dining experience.

PLEASE NOTE:

There are two shows Friday and Saturday. Guests in first dinner seating have the table for only the first show. After the first show, the table will be turned over to new guests arriving for the last show. We welcome first show dinner guests to continue the night at the Bar and in standing room. Guests in the second dinner seating may keep their table for the duration of the evening.

LATE NIGHT

Our second half of programming for the evening begins at 1:30am. Enjoy pulsating tropical rhythms fused with a variety of electronic music by local to international DJs, coupled with live percussion.

Guests can fire up their appetites at Slow Food Miami’s “Snail Social” at CHARCOAL Garden Bar + Grill on Tuesday, December 12 from 6PM-8PM. All of the proceeds from the event will go towards the Farmers’ Aid Fund, to help support farmers in rebuilding post-Hurricane Irma. Tickets are available at http://bit.ly/SlowFoodCHARCOAL.

CHARCOAL Garden Bar + Grill is the first full-service restaurant at The Wynwood Yard and the only one in Miami to be completely built from modified shipping containers. CHARCOAL builds its menu around a pair of Josper grills, state-of-the-art Spanish enclosed grills that reach upwards of 800° Fahrenheit, and only the best, locally sourced, ‘off-the-industrial-grid’ ingredients from farms around Florida including Little River Cooperative, Harpke Family Farm and Fort McCoy Ranch, in addition to responsible artisans from around the country. CHARCOAL’s carefully curated wine list is culled from all-estate grown producers, where they grow the grapes and vinify the wines at the same location.

From 6PM-8PM, attendees can enjoy a welcome cocktail punch with garden herbs, beer or wine, and passed Prosecco. We have two live music and entertainment shows Friday – Saturday. First dinner seating is at 8:00 pm and our second seating is at 11:00 pm. Doors open at 7:30 pm for cocktails and general admission. Dinner reservation guests should arrive promptly and with all guests in attendance prior to being seated. We have a 15 minute maximum hold time for all table reservations. A Credit Card is held for all reservations. 24hr cancellation policy. $50 per person charge for no-shows.

Our sharable prix-fixe menu is $85. Dinner reservations include all items listed in the menu paired with our spectacular Tucán show followed by a live band. Beverages are separate.

The menu includes a variety of savory dishes and chef’s selection for dessert. The Chef updates our menu often, to provide a range in your dining experience.

PLEASE NOTE:

There are two shows Friday and Saturday. Guests in first dinner seating have the table for only the first show. After the first show, the table will be turned over to new guests arriving for the last show. We welcome first show dinner guests to continue the night at the Bar and in standing room. Guests in the second dinner seating may keep their table for the duration of the evening.

LATE NIGHT

Our second half of programming for the evening begins at 1:30am. Enjoy pulsating tropical rhythms fused with a variety of electronic music by local to international DJs, coupled with live percussion.

The RC Cola Plant and surrounding Wynwood neighborhood will become the “epicenter of the graffiti world” during Basel House Mural Festival. Over the course of four days, there will be 40+ mural projects and 60+ top street artists from across the globe painting large murals across six city blocks in Wynwood Art District, including a digital arts and VR playground that will bring art to life. The FREE block party will offer live painting, unique art installations, live music, late-night DJs, artists, a vendor market, and food trucks. In addition, you can watch the creation process of the first mural in Wynwood to be painted by a robot designed by engineers from the University of Florida, and/or take part in Street Skool, where you can join panel discussions, workshops & networking sessions with industry peers.

Basel House is designed to be inclusive of all artists and people. It will unite top Miami Street Artists with those from across the globe and present them before an international audience of 80,000 people.

Danny Serfer, the chef/restaurateur behind some of Miami’s most beloved restaurants has been eager to bring the queen of sweets, renowned Pastry Chef Hedy Goldsmith, back to Miami. The coolest chef in town hosts Slow Food Miami’s “Snail Social” at Glass and Vine on Tuesday, October 10 from 6-8 p.m. All of the proceeds from the event go toward farm aid organizations for post Hurricane Irma recovery.

Glass and Vine is Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli’s latest culinary adventure. Focused on locally-sourced fresh ingredients, the menu is inspired by the lush, wild beauty of nature of Coconut Grove the restaurant is nestled in. Giorgio, known for his wildly popular popup, Eating House, and for being the Magic City’s first winner of Food Network’s Chopped, prepares classic dishes with European and Latin influences.

A special menu of passed hors d’oeuvres for Slow Food Miami’s Snail Social to be enjoyed at this oasis by the bay will include

-Crispy Yuca, a classic Latin dish made with Peruvian huancaina sauce, queso blanco, lime and cilantro
-Watermelon salad beautifully dressed with lime crema, cotija toasted corn and cilantro

Diana Fuentes, the second Cuban singer songwriter signed on by Sony Music after Celia Cruz, is a leader within the flourishing generation of performers and musicians from Cuba. Her second album, Planeta Planetario, was a joint artistic collaboration with renowned Puerto Rican musician and producer, Eduardo Cabra (Visitante), member of the band Calle 13.

Her latest single release, “La Vida Me Cambio” from her new Album, “Todo Esta Pasando” was a special collaboration with Gente De Zona; where both artists joined forces to create a summer hit single produced by Grammy award winner Motiff and filmed in Cuba by the famous director Alejandro Perez of “Bailando” and “La Gozadera”. Grovetoberfest is back in the Grove, and it’s bigger than ever. For the past six years, the festival has served up one of the top craft beer events in the country, attracting close to 7,000 beer enthusiasts eager to drink unlimited samples of 400 beers from hundreds of breweries, all while listening to Live music. This year, festival organizers worked closely with Coconut Grove Commissioner Ken Russell to move back to where it all began in Peacock Park, and the news has been met with great excitement.

To celebrate, Grovetoberfest has put together a great lineup including “first time” pours from 81 Bay Brew Company, Aslin Beer Company, Hidden Springs Ale Works, Lord Hobo Brewing, Ocleot Brewing, and Proof Brewing Company. Some returning heavyweights include 3 Sons Brewing Co., Octave Brewing, and Odd Breed Wild Ales. Also returning will be Angry Chair Brewing, Civil Society Brewing, and J. Wakefield Brewing. This year, the festival’s Kitchen Lab will be presented by Macy’s. Miami New Times’ Iron Fork celebrates its tenth anniversary Thursday, October 5, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Miami. Dining enthusiasts can enjoy dishes from some of the finest restaurants in South Florida. The event’s footprint will extend into the James L. Knight Center’s world-class theater and entertainment venue next door.

This year’s Iron Fork will grow exponentially, bringing culinary creations from more than 75 of South Florida’s luxury and fine-dining restaurants, including Amore de Miami, the Brick, Toro Toro, Texas de Brazil, Cibo Wine Bar, Morton’s Steak House, Dr. Limon Ceviche, Caja Caliente, Wine Date, Sensory Delight, Soyka, and Kaori, to name a few.

In addition, New Times is proud to announce a partnership with the Miami Rescue Mission. For almost a century, its outreach centers have been housing the homeless across South Florida. Today the mission’s Miami-Dade and Broward centers serve more than 1,300 men, women, and children each day. Last year, the organization served more than a million meals, many of them to hungry children. It also houses approximately 800 people in residential, life-changing programs. Guests can participate in a special raffle during the event, with 100 percent of all proceeds going to support the cause.

As in past years, celebrated chef Allen Susser will host the Chef Competition, a fierce fight to the culinary finish between two of Miami’s hottest toques. The competitors will be announced soon!

The epicurean event will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. for general admission ticket holders and will bring together thousands of young professionals, local businesses, and foodies for an evening of gourmet food selections, tasty libations, and live entertainment. Journey to the Mediterranean at the final First Fridays beach picnic of the season. Luckily, locals only have to drive a short distance to the beautiful Town of Surfside in order to experience live Middle Eastern music, belly dancers, interactive drum circle, Dead Sea exfoliating mud scrubs and Mediterranean bites. True to Mediterranean cultures, this event is a family-affair where guests are encouraged to bring their children and enjoy Surfside’s pristine beach, in addition to loads of kid-friendly activities. At First Fridays, art aficionados also can get their dose of culture by participating in a walking tour of the InsideOut pop-up art exhibit presented by Perez Art Museum and stroll along Surfside’s beach to discover reproductions of masterpieces from PAMM’s permanent art collection by 15 renowned artists. Visitors may bring their own beach picnic supplies and beach gear. The First Fridays beach picnic is scheduled from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on September 1, 2017 at the Oceanfront Community Center, located at 9301 Collins Avenue.
