London based bo.lee brings the eerie Scottish Highlands to sunny Miami Beach in a beautiful pairing which reflects McIntosh’s new body of work ‘Where We Belong’.
Born in Scotland in 1979, for his latest body of works, Where We Belong (2016), Andrew McIntosh has returned to the landscape that surrounds his family home which he got to know intimately while growing up. In his trademark painterly realist style and with a subdued, earthy palette, the artist depicts beautifully atmospheric locations from marshy moorlands to misty woodlands and ice-capped hills.

But these are not simply haunting Highland landscapes, however, as clearly present within each scene is an old caravan, some of which might have been manufactured half a century ago or more. Situated in picturesque spots but seemingly abandoned and without a human in sight, these somewhat dishevelled caravans appear both strangely incongruous yet somehow completely at home. Glowing with the warmth of the setting sun, the caravans become transformed into mysterious portals to other places and other times, suggesting that metaphysics, science-fiction or the paranormal might not be far away.

Fans of Westerns might spot that several of the landscapes depicted inside the caravans are scenes from classic movies of this genre. It is as if McIntosh is drawing both a comparison and a contrast between the picturesque beauty of the landscape in which he grew up and that of the American Midwest. Both are places that inspire the romantic imaginary: dreams of travel and escape, of leading different kinds of lives.

Indeed, this new body of work might be read as a metaphor for faded or failed dreams of adventure, of journeying to places far from home, or back in time to places we once knew. While they are wistful, eerie and melancholic paintings, with their golden sunset scenes they are not devoid of hope, and maybe, just maybe, these caravans have not yet reached their final destinations.

We selected ITALIAN MASTERS DO IT BETTER as the title of the exhibition on the great contemporary Italian artists that founded and influenced important internationally celebrated art movements in the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s, until the year 2000 and onwards, because we wish to point out the excellent unique creativity of these masters, officially introducing their artworks in the United States during this millennium. The American public is familiar to the excellence of Italian creativity in contemporary design, fashion, food, automotive industry, music, literature, as well as in Italian Classic Art masters like Leonardo, Michelangelo or Rafael, but only the in deep contemporary art connoisseurs know that Alberto Biasi was widely celebrated at the Venice Biennial and at New York MoMA around the middle of the last century as one of the founders of the international kinetic movement. ITALIAN MASTERS DO IT BETTER will present these masters to the general public at art galleries, art fairs, museums, private and public institutions, as well as through media campaigns and publications. This unique exhibition will open at VALLI ART Gallery simultaneously with our Booth at the prestigious CONTEXT Art Fair, both in Wynwood, FL.

The Post-War era marks a period in Italian Arts and Design, when “the Italian reinvented the way of doing things.” The exhibition at Valli Art Gallery presents master artists that, from the end of the 40’s and the first half of the 60’s, worked on the “upgrade” of the concept of the canvas, not any more conceived as a space to underline a representation in favor of a more physical approach, direct and conceptual, which will transform the overall canvas and its support in an artistic object self-expressive that will open a subjective dialogue with the public. Consequently, artworks would reconnect to the world and to true life. From the first Manifesto of Spatialism in 1946, Lucio Fontana and Bruno Munari envisioned a new art that should be characterized by a physical study of matter, color and sound in movement, the rhythm resulting from a new work with the pictorial palimpsest, aimed to overcome the two-dimensional limitation of the canvas by creating a space, physical and conceptual at the same time. Bruno Munari, a most important Italian Leonardesque figure of the 20th century, dominated the 50’s-60’s Milanese scene in the years of the economic boom, in which was born the figure of the artist visual-operator that becomes business consultant while contributing to the Italian post-war industrial revival. Very young, Munari participated with the Futurism, from which separates with a sense of lightness and humor, inventing the Aerial Machine, 1930, the first ‘mobile’ in art history, and the Useless Machines, 1933. In 1948, he founded MAC, the Concrete Art

Movement, with Gillo Dorfles, Gianni Monnet and Atanasio Soldati. The movement was a worldwide catalyst of Italian abstract instances proposing a synthesis of the arts, able to combine traditional painting with new communication tools, to show to industrialists and artists-artists the possible convergence between art and technique. In 1947, Munari created Concave-convex, one of the first installations in art history. Lucio Fontana presented Black environment, 1949, at Galleria Naviglio in Milan.

Between December 1959 and July 1960, Enrico Castellani, Extended and bent inwards surfaces, and Piero Manzoni, Achrome, founded Galleria Azimut in Milan, followed by the journal Azimuth in collaboration with Agostino Bonalumi, Cushioned-canvases. Azimut and Azimuth had an echo and domino effect almost unimaginable, with a disruptive experimentation and a desecration of the tools of making art, offering to the spectator the new role of completing the work by an artist that conceptually, symbolically and physically, violated the canvas. In those same years, Paolo Scheggi reached similar artistic outcomes exhibiting his Intersurfaces in Florence. In 1965, Fontana involved Turi Simeti in the exhibit Zero Avantgarde at his Milanese studio, proving that the Sicilian artist wasn’t indifferent to the demands of the Spatialism. The exhibit makes a synthesis of two historical Italian movements with Alberto Biasi telling about Optical Art and with Castellani, Bonalumi and Scheggi about Spatialism. The show, following Azimut’s assumptions, investigates these artists, including their natural heirs, Giuseppe Amadio and Cesare Berlingeri, who dared to violate the canvas to rewrite history, building on it something unexpected and revolutionary based on the real use of space, the research on time and the analysis of the structures’ rhythm. A section of the show will present Mimmo Rotella and Giosetta Fioroni that in the same years explored at Rome POP expression and realistic Nouveaux. Including Michelangelo Pistoletto, the exhibition showcases masters and their followers that made Italian painting a center of autonomous visual perceptions, where viewers also became the protagonists of the canvas interpretation.

Featuring work by: Donald McKnight, Robert McKnight, MANO. Ali Miranda, Adriano Nicot, and Purvis Young.

Soulful and provoking the exhibit “Deep As A River” presents a collection of strong and at times uneven, but always intriguing works that collectively are an exultation of the human spirit. Of a life properly lived knowing as poet Jim Harrison said “You touch things lightly or deeply; but you move along because life herself moves, and you can’t stop it; so you go with the “being-ness” of life…”.

“Deep As A River” revolves around the work of Purvis Young, perhaps one of the most important outsider artist of recent times. Young is best known for chronicling life in Miami’s inner city; his work remains as relevant today as it was when he started documenting the hustle and bustle of Overtown. The exhibit than extends to include a poignant collection of photography by Ali Miranda, “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie”; Adriano Nicot’s blue series which while dark is not without humor; masterful figurative drawings by Donald Mcknight; powerful examples of assemblage as sculpture by Robert McKnight. Fittingly the exhibit ends with stunning mix media works by MANO that speak to our time, “Hanging On” a nod to the United States history of immigration, and “Fools on the Hill” that may be viewed as veiled political commentary.

Special thanks to Gallery Moderne for collaborating with us to exhibit works by Purvis Young.

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

Saturday, December 3, 2016, we once again turn our hearts to Haiti and continue to uplift the people and give help to those who desperately need it.
“Help HEEL Haiti” was created in 2012 post earthquake, which aims to put shoes on the poor and homeless in Haiti.

“Help HEEL Haiti” is to inform and inspire our guests to become more involved. Donations of new and lightly used shoes of ALL AGES will be taken to Haiti and will be passed out among the poor in various areas of the island. This will be documented and filmed so those donated can see for themselves the smiles on the faces of the Haitian people.

As part of this powerful movement, shoe designer’s and artists all across South Florida, will showcase their artistically fashioned pieces in benefit to this endeavor.

“Help HEEL Haiti” will be a night of homage to the Haitian culture. Guest will be entertained with the musical beats of Zouk and Compa, fascinated with the decoration of Haitian art, and intrigued by fashion designers of Haitian descent who implement the culture in their collections. A taste of Haiti’s delicious cuisines will be served inside.

Architecture in Photography focuses on four generations of Dutch architectural photographers. Together, these photographers represent sixty years of Dutch architectural photography, which gives a unique image of time and the special observation of four different photographers.

The Gallery Club is a platform for photography, organized around exhibitions, dinners and events. Every edition of The Gallery Club explores the work of a wide range of Dutch and international photographers through a different theme.

In conjunction with the exhibition, AIA Miami will publicly announce and display the winners of the AIA Miami 20th Annual International Amateur Architecture Photography Competition.

Photographers from around the world were invited to submit photographs in the categories of Color, Black & White and Square (Instagram). The winners were selected by noted architecture photographers Sandy DeWitt, Robin Hill, Dan Forer, and graphic designer Alfred Lamoureux.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to announce Melton Mustafa as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. Trumpet player extraordinaire Mustafa is also known for being an arranger, composer, producer and educator. He has performed with some of the top names in jazz including the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Woody Herman Orchestra, Bobby Watson, Jaco Pastorius and George Cables, among many others.

Though an active traveling artist, Mustafa manages to continue to educate and inspire others. He is currently the Director of Jazz Studies at Florida Memorial University, where he teaches Music Theory, Jazz Composition and other jazz-related courses. He also produces his Annual Melton Mustafa Jazz Festival at Florida Memorial University yearly, some past guest appearances being Jon Faddis, Abraham Laboriel, Benny Golson, Dr. Nathan Davis, Dr. Grover Washington Jr., and others. On Saturday, Nov. 19, Miami City Ballet kicks of its Share
the Dance Community Outreach series of Ballet For Young People (BFYP) programming with an outdoor performance by the MCB School Ensemble in the City of Doral’s Downtown Park at 6:00pm. Thanks to the City of Doral, this family-friendly performance is free and open to the public.
On the program is the delightful “Carnival of the Animals: The Swansong” featuring the humorous music of Camille Saint-Saëns and a colorful cast of dancing animals, choreographed by MCB School faculty members Rafael Maldonado-Lopez and Geta Constantinescu. Throughout the performance, the audience will get an interactive look at the storyline of the ballet and learn about the movements of
dance.
This is the first of many performances of MCB’s signature community outreach program during its 2016-17 season. The goal of BFYP is to broaden MCB’s audience base and expose kids to the world of ballet. Most BFYP performances are specifically held for school children in the tri-county area, although a few are open to the public. Last year, over 6,000 schoolkids were able to attend BFYP performances.

Legendary ballerina Patricia McBride will be the guest artist featured in Miami City Ballet’s first Open Barre of the season on Nov. 16-17. McBride was one of the great ballerinas at New York City Ballet, joining the company in 1959 and becoming its youngest principal dancer in 1961. At MCB’s intimate studio theater, McBride will discuss her prolific 30-year career working with George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. After having a near death experience at age 5. Karen awoke with a new ability to sing. The influences of Classic Soul and Jazz singers helped open her voice. After graduating from University of NY at Stony Brook she and began singing in orchestras around New York. She moved to Miami and studied music theater at New World School of the Arts Miami. Becoming a yoga teacher exposed her to mantra music and its power to heal. She created Mantra Grooves after an inspiring dream of how music would be a force to change peoples hearts and consequently the world. Today she leads others in opening their voices and hearts as the singer for Mantra Grooves.

Kamran was Influenced by all the sounds of the 70s in England where he was raised by East Asian parents mixed with the Ethnic music of his culture. The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, recognized as one of South Florida’s premier shopping destinations for its sophisticated level of merchandising and ambiance, will launch a 6-week fitness series to celebrate the opening of Broward County’s first lululemon athletica. The Saturday series will kick-off on November 12 from 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. with special guests Hector Picard and the South Florida Firefighters Calendar 2017 firefighters.

Kick-off attendees will enjoy a free full hour yoga session led by Kate Yoga, as well as meet and greets with the South Florida Firefighters Calendar 2017 firefighters. The first 200 attendees to arrive at the event will receive complimentary yoga mats.

The series launch will also offer a meet and greet with local Broward resident and national role model for the disabled Hector Picard, who is on a mission to raise $50,000 for Broward Children’s Center, a caring home in Pompano for the most medically fragile and technologically dependent infants, children and young adults in the nation.

The fitness series will continue for five more weeks. The cost to attend these sessions will be $10 with all proceeds benefiting the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale. The fitness lineup includes:

• November 19 at 8 a.m. – One hour yoga session with The Yoga Joint and Ina Lee, ‎owner/president at Travelhost Magazine. The first 100 paid registrants will receive a complimentary lululemon athletica headband.
• November 26 at 8 a.m. – One hour barre ballet class with Pure Barre.
• December 3 at 8 a.m. – One hour pilates class with Zoeli Pilates.
• December 10 at 8 a.m. – One hour yoga class with Red Pearl Yoga.
• December 17 at 8 a.m. – One hour yoga class with Bombay Room Yoga.

lululemon athletica opens at The Galleria on Tuesday, November 8. WYN 317 Gallery is pleased to present “Symbiotic Behaviour”, a series of new works by Miami based artist, Ernesto Maranje. This highly anticipated solo exhibition is Maranje’s second at WYN 317.

For this exhibition, Ernesto adds human portraits to some of his paintings stressing the oneness between humans, animals and plant life. Animal portraits also show a depth of shared connections with all living things. Behaviour is mutually dependent with other organisms, coexisting in harmony. Ernesto Maranje’s art is not only beautiful and unique, it also brings to life environmental issues by portraying symbiotic behaviour in all forms of life.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Ernesto Maranje created a mural on one of the main gallery walls that best summons the purpose of “Symbiotic Behaviour”.

The SaludArte Foundation announced today the opening of their new exhibit The Global South: Visions and Revisions from the Brillembourg Capriles Collection, during Art Basel Miami Beach. The exhibition will take place at Mana Wynwood from November 30th to December 4th, 2016. Curated by Adriana Herrera and Adolfo Wilson, it creates a nonlinear, non- chronological narrative about the history of geometric abstraction in Latin America and Ibero America. The exhibit brings together works of diverse times and generating new approaches to the way history has been told from the global north. Some of the pieces will be activated daily with music and dance performances by the Lisarco Collective. These performances invite the audience to interact with the collective providing them with a unique insight on the philosophy and mission of SaludArte, which is to bring art to everyone without boundaries or limitations of any kind.

The City of Miami Beach presents blues mistress Rachelle Coba in a FREE performance November 4 from 6 to 9 PM, at Normandy Fountain, Normandy Drive and Rue Vendôme.

With riffs that can bring down the house and a voice to shake hearts, Rachelle Coba is a torrential force that sweeps away every audience. With her expertise in string instruments, Rachelle works magic to create amazing cover arrangements—acoustic or electric. In this role she played countless festivals including the Chicago Bluesfest and the Kerrville Texas Folk Festival, and opened for numerous acts like Johnny Winter, Coco Montoya and Koko Taylor. Miami is where she would make a life changing encounter with blues legend Buddy Guy. Since then, she has toured and performed with Super Chikan, Albert Castigila, Grady Champion, and Ray Drew.

Accompanying Rachelle are Jake Luger (keys), AJ Kelly (bass), and Raul Valdes (drums.)

Saks Fifth Avenue is joining forces with the Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) to benefit the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, in celebration of the new Saks location at Brickell City Centre in Miami!

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, Saks Fifth Avenue and the DCC will host a cocktail and store preview event at the new Saks Brickell City Centre. Attendees will enjoy the opportunity to support the DCC while touring and shopping the new store before it officially opens to the public. Nader Art Museum Latin America and Gary Nader NY are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Wifredo Lam: Blurring Boundaries, which will be on view at Gary Nader Art Centre in Wynwood from November 29 through December 15. Presenting masterworks from throughout the career of one of Cuba’s most celebrated artists, the exhibition will include significant loans from the Nader Art Museum Latin America, one of the largest and most important Latin American art collections in the world, as well as several renowned private collections. Following successful showings at London’s Phillips and Gary Nader NY, the exhibition focusing on Lam’s exploration of his lauded Afro-Cuban iconography and his legacy as a pioneering figure of twentieth century modernism makes its way to Miami for Miami Art Week.
