It was the year 1972 when DANTE VARGAS was born in Trujillo, Peru. Since then and up to today, he has made a generous contribution to the global music scene as a trumpeter, in genres such as tropical, pop, jazz, but especially in the genre of salsa. His interest in music and trumpet playing began in his homeland and grew as he worked in various other places, such as Colombia, where he played an important role in the most successful tropical and salsa orchestras of that country. After traveling the world with his music, he decided to make the city of Miami the strategic point of his successful career as a producer, arranger, and musician. Thanks to his interpretive quality with this wonderful instrument, he has stood out and positioned himself among the top trumpeters in the highly demanding market, performing alongside world-famous artists such as Marc Anthony, Shakira, Cristian Castro, Carlos Vives, Daddy Yankee, Sergio George, Sin Banderas, Alejandro Sanz, in the musical “Selena Vive,” Kumbia All Stars, Oscar De Leon, Olga Tañón, Andy Montañez, Tito Nieves, Luis Fonsi, Obie Bermudez, India, Dyango, Paty Manterola, Mocedades, Palito Ortega, Charlie Cruz, Frankie Negrón, Kiuldret, Arthur Hanlon, Lefty Pérez, Rey Ruiz, Maelo Ruiz, and many more. His work has earned him several Grammy awards, both Anglo and Latin.

Currently, in addition to continuing to produce, record, and perform with various artists, DANTE has put all his experience and talent into a new project that is making an impact due to its quality and universality. He is accompanied by the beautiful voice and unmistakable style of his daughter VAL, who inherited the same talent as her father and is gradually making a name for herself as a rising star in the current music market. Suénalo is a 9-piece Afro-Latin electro funk band from Miami, celebrating their 20th anniversary. The comparison is inevitable. How could it be otherwise? Tito Puente Jr. carries his father with him – imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. It’s in his looks, his joy, and his music. Tito, Jr. is on a passionate mission. The younger Puente is determined to nurture the musical legacy left by his father. He refuses to let his father become a distant memory. “He was just too vibrant, too exciting. There was magic in the music my father made. It made people happy all over the world.” He has found captive audiences who echo his passion. Crowds lured to a venue by the father are returning to see the son — and to once again participate in the high voltage celebration that takes place on stage. Tito Puente, Jr. has become an audience favorite in casinos, performing arts centers, symphony halls and jazz festivals worldwide, performing more than 300 shows over the past 5 years.

His 2004 album, “In My Father’s Shoes” featured the classic Puente titles and was spun into a BET Jazz television special of the same name. He was seen in a tribute to his father’s music on NBC’s two hour special–“The Apollo at 70: A Hot Night in Harlem.” He has also appeared on the ABC soap opera hit “One Life to Live” in performance with his big band. Symphony appearances include Dallas, San Antonio, Colorado, South Bend, and upcoming performances with the Palm Desert Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marvin Hamlisch. Tito, Jr.’s CD “Got Mambo?” is a mixture of the old and the new as he takes a musical departure into some powerful new music he can truly call his own.

“People who don’t know anything about Latin music know my father and people always, always smile when they say my father’s name,” he confides. “That is a very special gift I have been given.”

The City of Miami Beach on Sept 29th presented Tito, Jr. with the key to the city. Tito, Jr. lives in South Florida and has two children, Miranda and Antonio.

BIO:
Seventeen recordings as a soloist, 5 Latin Grammy nominations, one Grammy nomination and one Latin Grammy Award, collaborations with a diverse range of artists such as Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mathews, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Paquito D’ Rivera and Arturo Sandoval, as well as performances with the Cleveland, Singapore, and New World Symphony Orchestras, are testament to Néstor Torres’ success and versatility.

Born in Puerto Rico, Mr. Torres moved to NYC in his teenage years where he studied at Mannes School of Music, and later at the New England Conservatory in Boston. While playing in Latin Orchestras there, he learned to improvise in a style of Cuban music called ‘Charanga’, which shaped and developed Torres’s melodic and danceable sound.

As a composer, his commissions include “Marta y Maria”, commissioned by St. Martha-Yamaha Concert Series; “Disarmament Suite”, by ICAP (International Committee of Artists for Peace), and “Successors”, commissioned by the Miami Children’s Chorus. The Center for the Study of Spirituality at Florida International University commissioned Torres to compose and perform the work “The Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Law” on the occasion of the Dalai Lama’s lecture titled ‘Compassion – The Source of Happiness’. On 2010 Torres again performed for the Dalai Lama, this time his own composition “Saint Peter’s Prayer”, at Temple Emanu-El.

Hailing from the remote location of Perth, West Australia, saxophonist Troy Roberts has received numerous accolades including three DownBeat SM Jazz Soloist Awards, two Grammy Nominations, and was a semi-finalist in the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition.

In 2012, he shared the stage in an international septet comprising jazz giants Wayne Shorter, Richard Bona, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Zakir Hussein for Herbie Hancock’s launch of International Jazz Day at The UN, NYC. He was also part of Hancock’s 2014 International Jazz Day held in Osaka, Japan performing with jazz luminaries such as Marcus Miller, Roy Hargrove, Esperanza Spalding, and John Scofield. As a long-time New York City resident and featured artist and sideman on over fifty recordings, Troy maintains a busy performance and recording schedule around the globe with some of the greatest jazz artists of today and is currently celebrating his thirteenth release as a leader, ‘Best Buddies’ (Toy Robot Music).

Friday October 18 at 8 PM: Get ready for a very special show at Arts Garage! Jose Fajardo, Jr.’s father, Jose Fajardo, would have been 100 on this day. This show will celebrate the Charanga Flute master who was well known during the Palladium days! Jose Fajardo, Jr. began at the age of 3 with his father playing percussion and since then has performed alongside and/or has recorded with some of the best and iconic Latin artists and musicians of all time, including Jose Fajardo, Sr, The Fania All-Stars, Johnny Pacheco, Larry Harlow, Orchestra Broadway, Azuquita, Alfredo De La Fe, Tipica 73, Oscar D’Leon, Jose Alberto (El Canario), La Sonora Matancera, Johnny Ray, Grupo Imagen, Luisito Carrion, Pedro Jesus, Cano Estremera, Edgar Joel, Johnny Almendra, Tito Puente, Sheila E., Nino Segarra, Cachao, and many others.

After the untimely death of his father in 2001, Jose Fajardo, Jr. has been the director of the orchestra created by his father in 1949 and has changed the traditional sound of charanga music to a larger salsa sound for all generations. In 2006 he was signed and is still endorsed by the leading manufacturer of percussion instruments, “Latin percussion,” a division of KMC Music. His single, “El Swing of New York” released in 2011, was No. 1 for “Salsa Magazine” play list for 4 consecutive weeks.

In 2014 he launched his new single, “Yo Estoy Desengañado” (Salsa Version) originally recorded as a ballad by the world-famous Cuban singer Orlando Contreras. This track was launched as one of the songs on his upcoming CD release “Mis Recuerdos”. In May of 2015 once again Fajardo released another single “No Tiene Rival” that has been a dancer’s delight. Recently he has been on a tour throughout cities in the United States to teach local students Latin American rhythms and culture.

Saturday, September 14 at 8 PM: Arts Garage presents Cortadito. The band’s focus is on performing the traditional Cuban music of the early 20th century. From Son Montuno, Guaracha, Boleros, Nengon, and Bolero Son, this dynamic ensemble brings the listener back to a time when Trio Matamoros, or Ignacio Piniero ruled the Cuban music world. This was the era when popular music was Cuban Music and Son Montuno was influencing music throughout the globe. From time to time, Cortadito is backed by a variety of guest musicians. This gives the group a sound reminiscent of the Buena Vista Social Club.

Jose Elias founded the band alongside Julio Cesar Rodriguez Delet from Santiago de Cuba in November of 2011 after a 12-year stint with Conjunto Progreso. This stint garnered him a Grammy nomination for his participation in the album Masters of Cuban Son. In 2018 Cortadito toured with world-renowned percussionist Sammy Figueroa.

Friday September 6 at 8: Arts Garage presents saxophonist and flutist Tom McCormick. Tom has been a fixture on the South Florida jazz scene for over twenty-five years. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Tom studied at the acclaimed Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and soon after began teaching at the University. He is currently the saxophone professor at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus.

Tom has performed with some of the biggest names in the business including: Sheila E., Arturo Sandoval, Nicole Henry, Mongo Santamaria, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, the O’Jays, Celia Cruz, Donna Summer, Patti Austin and Lou Rawls. For many years he was the principal saxophonist with the Miami Symphony. He has performed throughout Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Japan and India. Besides being a multi- instrumentalist, Tom is also an accomplished composer and arranger.

Fueron los primeros en enseñarle canciones infantiles y acompañarla en la guitarra mientras cantaba.

Saturday August 10 at 8: Arts Garage presents Leslie Cartaya. Traditional Cuban music runs in her veins and jazz and American funk have shaped her artistic personality. Leslie admits to have discovered traditional Cuban and Brazilian music as she reminisces about her family, in particular her cousins. They were the first to teach her nursery rhymes and accompany her on the guitar while she sang.

Caribbean, Afro-American, Afro-Latin, and Latin American musical rhythms create a harmonious fusion in her debut CD, “No Pares,” a 19-track production, 18 of which she composed. “In this CD, my first experience as co-producer and musical arranger, I had the opportunity of working with renowned musicians who supported me every step of the way,” said this attractive brunette, who defines herself as a happy, adventurous, inquisitive, expressive, but most of all a perfectionist woman. With the release of “No Pares,” Leslie went up to the fifth position on the Miami Latin Reverbnation Charts and got nominated for the 2013 Latin Grammy as Best New Artist. In 2015 Leslie released her second solo album titled “Llevame Contigo.”

Friday, July 26 at 8: Arts Garage presents pianist Kiki Sanchez. Sanchez is among the new generation of Afro-Peruvian Jazz musicians emerging on the national Jazz scene. Born in Lima, Peru, his musical interpretation is resounding. He leaves the listener with admiration and much anticipation for greater things to come from a musician of such high caliber.

His musical journey can be heard on his debut CD, “Dreams”. The music is enveloped in a smooth Latin Jazz format with a perfect balance of Afro-Peruvian rhythm and Jazz harmonies. He has proceeded to record seven additional albums, as varied as his “Salsa Project”, his “Jazz Big Band Project”, “Soneros del Perú”, and the devotional “I Praise You, Lord”. All have been well-recived by critics.

He has also produced an instructional DVD called “The Real Latin Piano and the introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms”. In it, you’ll find essential musical knowledge that accentuates the building blocks of Latin music. It also offers a fresh introspective view on various Afro-Peruvian rhythms as applied to Jazz musicians.

Saturday July 6 at 8 PM: Trombonist William Cepeda leads his ensemble in an evening of “Afro-Rican Jazz.” Known as a cultural icon of Puerto Rico, Grammy-nominated artist and composer William-Cepeda revolutionized the field of Latin music in 1992 with his introduction of Afro-Rican Jazz, an innovative blend of progressive jazz, world music and traditional Puerto Rican roots. His ensemble has toured all over the world, performing in jazz festival such as Montreux, NorthSea and Tabarka, as well as, in performing arts venues and clubs.

Born and raised in Loiza, the heart of “little Africa” in Puerto Rico, William Cepeda’s artistic excellence as a composer and artistic visionary, his authenticity and advocacy for rigorous research and comprehensive documentation of Puerto Rican music, dance, and culture have earned him multiple awards, grants and recognition from the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, Meet The Composer, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Music Fund at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, American Composers Orchestra, American Composers Forum, and the Association of Hispanic Arts.

A protégé of Dizzy Gillespie, William Cepeda was a member of his United Nation Orchestra, and Cepeda’s musical influences include artists like Miriam Makeba, Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, Eddie Palmieri and Lester Bowie. In addition to world music and jazz, William Cepeda’s oeuvre includes contemporary classical music with his introduction of Bomba Sinfonica, a full-length orchestral work of symphony, opera, choir and soloists.

Saturday, April 20 at 8: Grammy- Nominated artists Ike and Val Woods have performed throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. The Miami-based blues duo completed their recent CD, “Movin’ Up,” after returning from an eighteen city European Tour where they electrified their audience with their high energy yet soulful Blues performances.

Band leader and lead vocalist/guitarist Ike Woods has enjoyed a long and productive career, first as a sought-after sideman and later as the front man for his own band, the Ike and Val Woods Blues Band. At the age of seventeen, lke auditioned for Jazz greats Nat Adderly and Curtis Fuller at a high school music workshop. They immediately offered this exciting and accomplished young guitarist the opportunity to travel to New York and play with them professionally. Ike, however, chose to remain in Florida to finish his education and purse his career.

In 2007, the Ike and Val Woods Blues Band competed and won first place at the Monterey Blues Festivals’ “Battle of the Bands.” They have shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Gill Scott, Ramsey Lewis, KEM, Jerry Butler, Jeffery Osborne, Bobby Blues Band, the Whispers, Tommy Castro, Eddie Cotton Jr., Jonathan Butler, David Sanborn, Earl Klugh, Betty Wright, Nestor Torres, the Ruppingtons, Pancho Sanchez, and the O’Jays.

The new LP “Movin’ Up” highlights Ike Woods’ virtuoso guitar performances along with Ike and Val’s soulful blues vocals providing the listener with a musical experience second to none. The first single release from the LP entitles “The Party’s Jumpin” has held the number three spot on the Reverbnation local blues chart for eight weeks.

Saturday January 5 at 8: Jose Fajardo Jr. brings his orchestra to Arts Garage. Since childhood, he has performed alongside and has recorded with some of the best Latin musicians of all time. This includes Jose Fajardo (his father), The Fania All-Stars, Johnny Pacheco, and Alfredo De La Fe. He has also recorded with Tipica 73, Oscar D’Leon, Jose Alberto (“El Canario”), La Sonora Matancera, Johnny Ray, Grupo Imagen, Luisito Carrion, Pedro Jesus and more.

Fajardo Jr. has traveled all over the world with these iconic Latin artists. He has performed in Africa, Mexico, St. Martin, Germany, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, the United States and more. His career also extends to television. This includes performances on programs like Siempre en Domingo, El Show Del Medio Dia, Access Hollywood and more.

He has played his music in some of the largest venues in the world including Madison Square Garden, The Lincoln Center, Hostos Center for Arts and Culture, Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, Plaza De Toro, and the Call Ocho Festival in Miami.

After the untimely death of his father, Jose Fajardo, Jr. became the director of his father’s orchestra. It changed the traditional sound of charanga music to a salsa sound for all generations. He was signed by the leading manufacturer of percussion instruments “Latin percussion.” His single, “El Swing of New York” was #1 for “Salsa Magazine” playlist for 4 weeks. His single, “Yo Estoy Desengañado” (Salsa Version), was originally recorded as a ballad by the Cuban singer Orlando Contreras. Afterwards, the track launched as one of the songs on his upcoming CD release “Mis Recuerdos.” Recently, Fajardo released another single “No Tiene Rival” that has been a dancers delight. Nowadays, Fajardo, Jr. has been on tour throughout cities within the United States to teach local students the Latin American rhythms and culture.

The Mike Cady Experience, with Joe Donato, Jaui Schneider, Don Wilner, and Leny Seinberg are set to debut at Arts Garage Friday, November 30, at 8 PM.

Cady dazzles his audience with his ability to go from the jazz stylings of Eddie Jefferson to lead singer in Teddy Harris Jr’s Bebop Society Jazz Orchestra. Just when you think you’ve heard it all, he pulls out songs from R&B greats. He makes each song his own. His venues have ranged from small clubs to concert halls to major jazz festivals. He has performed in cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, and Miami. He’s performed with noted musicians such as Marcus Belgraves, Harold McKinney, Rudy Robinson, Marion Haden, and more.

When Michael hits the stage, he exudes confidence. This was instilled in him by his mother, the late, great Susie Garrett, an actress/singer. His stage performances include “Great Legends and Great Music” a DeeDee McNeil production directed by Ron Milner. His most recent project was “A Tribute to Horace Silver” for which he received an overwhelming response from Metro Times.

Sunday November 11 at 7 PM: Arts Garage presents the Martin Bejerano Trio. Bejerano has been active as a professional musician from the age of fifteen. A world-class jazz pianist and composer, Martin has been a member of Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Roy Hayne’s quartet for fifteen years. He has also performed and/or recorded with such jazz luminaries as Christian McBride Band, Dave Holland, Pat Metheny, Ignacio Berroa, Ron Carter, and Russell Malone, performing at most of the major jazz clubs, festivals, and venues around the world. An award-winning bandleader, Martin’s trio has performed at such notable venues as Symphony Space, Festival Miami, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, The Jazz Gallery, Barquisimeto Jazz Festival, El Hatillo Jazz Festival, St. Petersburg Jazz Festival, and Arturo Sandoval’s Jazz Club, and was recently featured on NPR’s “Jazz Set”, a nationally syndicated radio show that spotlights jazz artists. Their recent CD release, Trio Miami, was awarded “Editor’s Choice” by Downbeat magazine (2016).

Martin has also gained notoriety as an award-winning composer. He has been twice awarded the prestigious “New Jazz Works” grant from Chamber Music American in 2010 and 2017 and, was also awarded the “Bacardi Choice” Commission by Bacardi and the Dranoff 2 Piano Foundation in 2014.

Currently, Martin heads the Jazz Piano department at the University of Miami, teaching piano, composition, and improvisation, and continues to tour internationally with his trio, Roy Haynes Quartet, Ignacio Berroa Trio, and the Jonathan Kreisberg New Quartet.

This evening the trio will be premiering a new work, “Cuban American Suite”, that was commissioned by Chamber Music America with generous support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Saturday October 27 at 8 PM: Arts Garage presents Carlos Camilo and the Live Dimension, a fusion band that explores jazz genres without frontiers in a celebration of good taste and soulful music. It is a group of dreamers and friends who have come together to realize a musical vision amidst difficult times which make visionary projects like this one difficult to realize. Nonetheless, against the odds, Carlos Camilo has managed to bring together honorable musicians to glorify music through the complex language of jazz.

Carlos Camilo is a pianist, singer, composer and producer hailing from Cuba and currently based in Miami. Growing up in Cuba, his music is inspired by traditional Cuban flavor mixed with American music. From an early age, Carlos Camilo knew he wanted to pursue music seriously, and has since been influenced by artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Earth Wind and Fire, Brian Culbertson, Brian McKnight, Michael Jackson, Hans Zimmer and countless others. Today, he mainly creates smooth jazz and R&B. He’s released six albums and multiple singles and has played his music all over the globe with other artists, including Spanish Latin superstar, David Bisbal.

Friday October 19 at 8 PM: Arts Garage presents The Miami Big Sound Orchestra, featuring special guest vocalist Lourdes Valentin. The Miami Big Sound Orchestra is downtown Miami’s resident professional contemporary Latin Jazz Orchestra, a project formed as a collaboration of musicians from Miami’s jazz and Latin music communities. This 18-piece powerhouse group is composed of veteran Miami musicians who have performed and toured with the likes of Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, Jon Secada, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Chayanne, Ray Ruiz, Tito Nieves, Chaka Khan, and the Funk Brothers among many other artists. The unique sound highlights the dynamics and rhythmic detail in an elegant repertoire. The band is composed of high-level musicians based in the city of Miami including bassist Yorgis Goiricelaya, pianist Livan Mesa, drummer Reinier Guerra, saxophonist Yunior Arronte and conga player Ramses Araya.

Its founder is bassist Yorgis Goiricelaya, a world-class musician who has worked with great figures of the Latin market and Grammy-winning artists such as Albita, Rey Ruiz, Luis Enrique, Issac Delgado, Francisco Cespedes, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Oscar D’León, Habana Abierta, Osmany Paredes and many others. Critically acclaimed guitarist, composer, and bandleader Greg Diamond creates music inspired by Latin American sounds and rhythms which he seamlessly infuses into the context of contemporary jazz — with modal harmonies, compound meters, and various other elements that comprise the vibrant and dynamic musical tapestry of his native city of New York. All About Jazz hails Diamond, who is of mixed Colombian and Jewish origin, as “a rising star in the New York jazz scene..” Latin Jazz Network writes that Diamond is a “composer of great maturity and genius” and featured his sophomore release “Conduit” [Dot Time 2012] as an Editor’s Pick for “Best Albums of 2012”. Indeed, Diamond has cultivated a distinguishable sound with his own his writing, a crack ensemble, and his use of the electric guitar — an instrument not often associated with this genre.

Diamond and his group have performed at numerous premier New York venues such as: The Blue Note, Iridium Jazz Club, Joe’s Pub, Smalls Jazz Club, Zinc Bar, and Nublu; not to mention numerous festival presentations, among them: The Madrid International Jazz Festival, Barranquijazz Festival, Jimmy Glass Jazz Festival, Teatro Libre Jazz Festival, Medejazz Festival, Jazz al Parque Festival, and the Nublu Jazz Festival. Friday, September 14 at 8 PM: Arts Garage presents Jonathan Joseph’s Weather Underground. Jonathan has had a remarkable career, working with some of the greatest musical minds of the modern era, one of whom was Josef Zawinul, a founder of the great fusion band Weather Report. Jonathan became a member of his later band,the Zawinul Syndicate, in 1994 -1995 but before that, he worked with former member of Jaco Pastorius’s Word Of Mouth band, the great Steel Drummer Othello Molineaux. As a member of Othello’s band, Jonathan played on Othello’s album entitled “It’s About Time.” Jonathan’s performance on this album helped launch the tremendous career he currently enjoys.

“The sound Jaco created represents the sound of South Florida and since I was born on Miami Beach, I have always been very honored to be associated with the sound of his music”.

With a view to keeping the spirit found in Jaco’s music and Weather Report’s (“WR”) catalogue alive, Jonathan has assembled a tremendous group of musicians capable of executing WR’s & Jaco’s collective catalogue, once again bringing life to the soundtrack of many people’s lives all over the world. Assembling the Weather Underground band, Jonathan reached out to longtime friend and fellow Zawinul Syndicate alumnus, guitarist Randy Bernsen, Cuban-born bassist and current member of Gonzalo Rubalcaba’s Volcan group Armando Gola, and current member of Othello Molineaux’s band, keyboardist Abel Pabon.

Aug 24 at 8 PM: Arts Garage presents the Tal Cohen Jazz Ensemble. “A special talent that needs to be heard… Check him out!” – DownBeat Jazz Magazine

Tal Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel. After moving to Australia at the age of 16, Tal continued his music studies at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he completed his Bachelor degree jazz performance.

Currently, Tal is attending the University of Miami in the United States, where he received a full scholarship and teaching assistantship to complete his Masters degree under the mentorship of Martin Bejerano. During his time in the states he has had the opportunity to play with drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and West Coast-based trumpeter John Daversa.

One of the highlights of Tal’s career occurred when he received a call from Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard to play a show with his Quintet at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Blanchard also invited him to perform with the “Terence Blanchard Quintet” at the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Most recently, Tal appeared at the Perth Jazz Festival alongside acclaimed New York saxophonist Greg Osby.

Fanni Sarkozy is an internationally recognized, highly trained pianist, singer and music educator who is equally proficient in jazz and classical music. An honors graduate of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest, she and two others formed the band “Mizar,” whose proficiency led them to win numerous jazz and pop competitions in Hungary and abroad. Fanni started to write music, and in 2010 Mizar won first prize in the International Songwriting Contest (in France) in the jazz category with one of Fanni’s songs called “No Time to Lose”. Her subsequent band, “Mrs Columbo,” won the prominent Hungarian award, the Fonogram Awards “Best Jazz album of the Year” with their record “Re-make up” (Magneoton Records.)

Fanni will be joined by Julio Montalvo, trombone, Armondo Gola, bass; Hilario Bell, drums; and special guest vocalist:Lenard Rutledge.

Captivating, soul stirring, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the song stylings of baritone LeNard Rutledge. Named BEST JAZZ ARTIST by the Miami New Times magazine, LeNard has been a featured vocalist at area jazz spots in South Florida. Arts Garage,The Museum of Contemporary Art, the Van Dyke Café and O’Hara’s Jazz Pub are the most notable. Saturday July 14 at 8 PM: Trombonist William Cepeda leads his ensemble in an evening of “Afro-Rican Jazz.” Known as a cultural icon of Puerto Rico, Grammy-nominated artist and composer William-Cepeda revolutionized the field of Latin music in 1992 with his introduction of Afro-Rican Jazz, an innovative blend of progressive jazz, world music and traditional Puerto Rican roots. His ensemble has toured all over the world, performing in jazz festival such as Montreux, NorthSea and Tabarka, as well as, in performing arts venues and clubs.

Born and raised in Loiza, the heart of “little Africa” in Puerto Rico, William Cepeda’s artistic excellence as a composer and artistic visionary, his authenticity and advocacy for rigorous research and comprehensive documentation of Puerto Rican music, dance, and culture have earned him multiple awards, grants and recognition from the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, Meet The Composer, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Music Fund at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, American Composers Orchestra, American Composers Forum, and the Association of Hispanic Arts.

A protégé of Dizzy Gillespie, William Cepeda was a member of his United Nation Orchestra, and Cepeda’s musical influences include artists like Miriam Makeba, Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, Eddie Palmieri and Lester Bowie. In addition to world music and jazz, William Cepeda’s oeuvre includes contemporary classical music with his introduction of Bomba Sinfonica, a full-length orchestral work of symphony, opera, choir and soloists.

June 8 at 8 PM: Dr Ed Calle brings his “Mamblue” project to Arts Garage. Saxophonist, composer, orchestrator, producer, scholar, professor, and leader Ed Calle is known for his extraordinary ability to sight-read, interpret, and perform virtually any musical style. Throughout the globe, his peers and colleagues often laud his versatility. Despite his prodigious experience, he remains relentlessly demanding about his work. On the tenor sax, Calle has an expressive, full-bodied sound, almost vocal in the middle and upper registers, cello-like at the bottom. As a soloist, he can be deceptively brilliant. He has an impressive, fluid technique and uses it to explore the material at hand with logic and purpose.

The Venezuelan-born, South Florida-based Calle is a Latin Grammy award winner and a five-time Latin Grammy nominee. He is a first-call saxophone player and a musician who has played on more than 1,200 albums and 8,500 singles. He holds a doctorate in higher education leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

Having performed for audiences worldwide, Leon Foster Thomas is a unique force in modern jazz. Friday, April 27 at 8: Arts Garage presents The Mojo Ike and Val Experience. Grammy-nominated artists Ike and Val Woods have performed throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. The Miami-based blues duo completed their most recent CD, “Movin’ Up,” after returning from an eighteen-city European Tour where they electrified their audience with their high energy yet soulful Blues performances. The Ike and Val Woods Blues Band competed and won first place at the Monterey Blues Festivals’ “Battle of the Bands”. They have shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Gill Scott, Ramsey Lewis, KEM, Jerry Butler, Jeffrey Osborne, Bobby Blue Bland, the Whispers, Tommy Castro, Eddie Cotton Jr., Jonathan Butler, David Sanborne, Earl Klugh, Betty Wright, Nestor Torres, the Ruppingtons, Pancho Sanchez and the O’Jays. The theme of the 2018 Nations Women’s History Project is “NEVERTHELESS, SHE PERSISTED.”  Real change comes from persistence and the courage to move forward despite any obstacles.  Arts Garage is proud to celebrate the courage of the women in our lives –  the philanthropists, the changemakers, the voices, the caregivers, the noise makers – with a program focused on the contributions of some of these special women on March 3rd, 2018. The Women’s History Month event, Voices of Courage: A Celebration of Women, will be held on March 3, 2018 at 6:30pm at Arts Garage, 94 NE 2nd Ave, Delray Beach, Fl.  The evening will begin with a reception in the Grassroots Gallery with wine and lite bites followed by uplifting speakers including local philanthropist & activist Charlotte Dilks,  Delray Beach’s Deputy Vice Major Shirley Johnson and documentary photographer, activist, author and educator Paula Allen. The evening will end with a musical program, Charcoal Sketches, designed specifically for this special Arts Garage event by sultry alto and Arts Garage favorite Avery Sommers.  

With an evening stacked with incredible stories of change, community and courage,  Arts Garage is thrilled to welcome three inspirational speakers that have positively impacted the world for women. Charlotte Dilks’s, titled, “Bucking the Tide” shares her perspective of being the first female driver for Drake’s bakery to being a successful female entrepreneur and business owner.  Shirley Johnson, Delray Beach Deputy Vice Mayor will follow with her own story, “A Black Woman’s Saga.”  Shirley Johnson,  a Delray Beach resident,  activist and Delray Beach City Commissioner is now spending her days working to make Delray Beach a great community for everyone.  Finally, our keynote speaker Paula Allen will present “Super Love; How a Photographer From NYC, a Woman from New Orleans, and Two Delray Beach Women Rebuilt a Community.”

Rounding out the night in the most spectacular way is Arts Garage favorite,  master of the Great American songbook and beautiful Broadway vocalist,  Avery Sommers performing LIVE with a set she created special for the evening called, “Charcoal Sketches.” which will highlight the achievements of female jazz artists through song. Inspired by Sarah Vaughn, Charenée Wade has grown to become a notable singer, composer, arranger and educator. A Master’s Degree graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Charenée has been featured in many configurations from jazz trios to Big Band to the Conservatory’s 100-piece Jazz Philharmonia Orchestra.

She has studied with Miles Griffith, Bob Stewart, Lenora Zenzailai Helm, Pamela Baskin-Watson, Carmen Lundy, and is currently studying with Peter Eldridge, Luciana Souza, and Cecil Bridgewater. Ms. Wade has taught at New Orleans Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Jazz Camp at Loyola College, Brooklyn Charter School, Centrum Jazz Port-Townsend Workshop, and The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. She is currently a professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music, City College, with the Jazzmobile Workshop program. She teaches various workshops and clinics and was an esteemed judge for the 2010 Jazzmobile Vocal Competition, alongside Dr. Billy Taylor and Grady Tate.

Saturday February 3, 8 PM: Arts Garage presents the Kiki Sanchez Latin Jazz Ensemble. Among the new generation of young Afro-Peruvian Jazz musicians that are emerging on the national Jazz scene is pianist Kiki Sanchez. Born in Lima Peru, Sanchez began playing piano at age 11. Later he moved to Miami, Florida, where he continued studying piano as well as cultivating a deep love for American Jazz.

Sanchez’s musical interpretation is resounding, leaving the listener with admiration and much anticipation for greater things to come from a musician of such high caliber.

Sanchez has also produced an instructional DVD called “The Real Latin Piano and the introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms”; in it you’ll find essential musical knowledge that accentuates the building blocks of Latin music, as well as offering a fresh introspective view on various Afro-Peruvian rhythms as applied to Jazz.

With all these great musical things happening in Kiki’s life, it is no doubt that greater things are still to come for this young inspiring Jazz musician. Kiki’s recent release, “Two Worlds” has been well-received, as have his three prior CD’s.

December 17 at 7 PM: Arts Garage presents The Mike Levine Jazz Sextet. Based in the Sunshine State, pianist Mike Levine has developed a reputation as a solid player, producer and composer. With a career that stretches back to the early 80’s,Levine made his record debut in 1981 as co-leader of The Ross-Levine Band, a project with Pat Metheny as a guest artist. The effort drew national attention and remained in the top ten of the AC-Jazz Chart for six weeks. Their subsequent effort also fared well and paved the band’s way as an opening act for such highly regarded performers as Michael Franks, Gato Barberi and Dionne Warwick.

Levine has enjoyed a variety of gigs and recordings from Mel Torme, The Jaco Pastorius Big Band, Ed Calle, Michael Bolton, David Sanborn, Steve Oliver, Les DeMerle, Roberto Perrera, Billy Ross, Raul DiBlasio and John Secada to touring in Mexico, Austria, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Canada. His festival appearances include the Montreal, Detroit, Syracuse, Aruba, Amelia Island and Berks jazz festivals. For 17 years Mike also played in the house band for “Sabado Gigante,” a top TV show seen around the world by millions, as well as “Don Francisco Presenta,” a popular talk show. As a composer, his compositions have landed in movies such as “Expendables” and “Admission” as well as TV shows both in the U.S. and internationally including Star Search, George Lopez, Four Weddings, Coronation Street, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

“From The Heart,” Mike’s debut CD, featured special guests Hiram Bullock and Ed Calle. This 2008 release landed Mike on the SmoothJazz.com Indie Chart for over forty weeks. His second CD, “Thinking Of You,” was released in 2012. Along with South Florida’s finest, Mike’s special guests were Will Lee, Ed Calle and Billy Ross. With good airplay, the tune “Walkin Tall” landed on Billboards top 30 Jazz Tune for 5 weeks. Mike’s latest CD “Star Gazing” released late May 2017 features Will Lee, Andy Snitzer, and Ed Calle along with South Florida’s finest and is already getting significant airplay nationally.

December 16, 8 PM: New York saxophonist Alex Weitz has an in-depth knowledge of composition that imbues his originals with robust, memorable melodies and structural integrity. The classical rigor of those melodies is just as evident in the way he improvises around them.

Since graduating from Miami’s Frost School of Music, Alex’s primary musical focus has been on performing, composing, and producing music with his ensemble, the Alex Weitz Group. March of 2013 saw their debut release “Chroma,” and after a long-awaited return his sophomore record, “Luma.” Weitz has appeared at such topflight venues as the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Festiva, the Arsht Center, the Tucson Jazz Festival, Gusman Hall, the Azamara Journey, the Telluride Jazz Festival, and numerous local, national, and internationsl venues with his own group and as a sideman.

In recognition of his excellence, Weitz received DownBeat’s Outstanding Undergraduate Soloist award of 2013, as well as recognition from ASCAP as an outstanding young jazz composer, and in 2014 his original “Song for Peace” was featured as the theme song for the Swedish documentary, “Bettan’s Taxi.” The upcoming year is already looking to be a breakout one for Weitz, and with the release of “Luma” it’s only a matter of time before discerning ears will awaken to his unmistakable voice.

Winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, and the 2004 National Trumpet Jazz Competition, Jean Caze has emerged as one of today’s most exciting voices in jazz. At the age of twenty-seven Jean has performed with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Najee, Arturo Sandoval, Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, and George Duke to name a few. While in high school, Jean performed with the legendary rock group “Chicago” live on NBC. In 2007, the Haitian-born trumpeter won second place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

Jean has received abundant praise from critics, peers and jazz enthusiasts alike who have taken to Jean’s lyrical tone and tasteful ideas. He has been hailed a “True Improviser” and even compared to Miles Davis by fellow trumpet player Carl Saunders. November 25 at 8 PM: Felipe Lamoglia is a Grammy-winning saxophonist, composer and arranger. Born and educated in Cuba, he is a graduate of the prestigious Superior Institute of Art (ISA).

In 1999 Lamoglia relocated to the U.S. where he immediately began performing with the late Celia Cruz. In 2001 he began playing with Grammy winner Arturo Sandoval. Sandoval’s CD “Rumba Palace,” on which Felipe arranged and played, won a Grammy. In 2004 he joined Grammy winner Gonzalo Rubalcaba, recording on his Grammy-nominated album, Paseo (Blue Note). He also recorded on Ignacio Berroa’s Grammy-nominated album, “Codes.”

Felipe has shared the stage with musical giants such as Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Eldar, Dafnis Prieto, Ignacio Berroa and many others, participating in Major Jazz Festivals in the U.S. and abroad including JVC, Playboy, Newport, Henieken Jazz, Red Sea and in venues such as Blue Note, Iridium, Jazz Standard, Yoshi’s, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola and many more.

Felipe’s latest project, “Iresounds”, is a mix of his Afro-Cuban roots, Latin Jazz and contemporary Coltrane-influenced Jazz.

November 10, 8 PM: Elio’s Quartet is the winner of the 2009 International Jazz Festival in Havana, Cuba. The Quartet consists of talented musicians such as Livan Mesa on piano and keyboard, Yunior Arronte on saxophone and keyboard, Yorgis Goiricelaya on bass, and Elio Piedra on drums. All of these musicians have enjoyed successful careers in the music industry, and have performed at the national and the international level.

Elio Piedra’s Quartet was founded in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
