Who/What:
Ann Storck Center – a Fort Lauderdale-based private nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities – offers residential placement, an inclusive and caring solution for families who can no longer meet the support needs of a loved one with a developmental disability. For guardians seeking care for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF/IID), Ann Storck Center will host an open house for its Northwood Home, an Intermediate Care Facilities Behavior Focus Home, on Wednesday, April 16, from 3 to 6 p.m.

The Open House is an opportunity for families and community members to see how Ann Storck Center combines comfort, care and innovation to create a nurturing environment. Caregivers will have the opportunity to tour the home, meet the staff and learn more about the programming. Light refreshments will be served.

Located in Pembroke Pines, the Northwood Home has a unique home-like setting where bedrooms are individualized to likes and preferences. No two rooms are alike. The Northwood Home provides 24-hour behavioral, nursing and residential services, alongside innovative therapy, recreation and community inclusion.

The Northwood Home boasts eight beds and has three family-style homes supported by an around-the-clock team of residential staff, nurses and therapists who collectively provide intensive specialized services to individuals with developmental disabilities, behavioral challenges and/or significant functional skill impairments. It is based on a behavioral model which provides all services (multidiscipline).

Individuals must have the ability to benefit from rehabilitative services, known as Active Treatment Each individual is provided with an individual plan that is tailored to their specific needs and their parent/guardian is a valued member of their Circle of Support.

Eligibility for placement includes:

•An individual must have a developmental disability which occurs prior to age 18 and constitutes a substantial handicap that can reasonably be expected to continue indefinitely.
•Disabilities served include Intellectual disabilities (full-scale IQ of 70 or below), severe forms of autism, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, Prader Willi syndrome, down syndrome.
•All individuals must have the ability to benefit from rehabilitative services called Active Treatment.
•All potential admits must follow the APD application process.
•Only Floridians are eligible for services.

MODS Sensory-Friendly Sundays provide a sensory sensitive environment for individuals on the Autism Spectrum. The museum is open an hour early for exploration and activities followed by an IMAX film at 12:30 p.m.

To provide a more sensory-sensitive environment for individuals on the autism spectrum, the theater lights will be turned up and the sound will be lowered. All films will be presented in 2D and no trailers will be shown before the movie. Audience members are welcome to get up, sing, walk, dance and shout without worrying about complaints. Families can bring snacks from home, blankets and other small items to make themselves comfortable.

Throughout the Museum, children can participate in a variety of sensory-based activities. They can engage in social interactions and improve their processing, modulation and regulation of sensory input to increase their participation in a natural environment.

American Heritage Schools, in partnership with Lighthouse of Broward, presents its 5th Annual Heroes event, a fundraising concert and auction to benefit the blind and visually impaired in Broward County, at American Heritage Schools’ Center for the Arts auditorium on Saturday, May 3, at 6 p.m. The event will be a 50s-themed prom night to remember featuring live music by Clay Cartland and American Heritage Schools’ Fine Arts Students.

The Lighthouse of Broward is the only private, non-profit organization in Broward County that provides comprehensive educational, rehabilitation, and counseling services to blind and visually impaired children and adults. Through their work, the Lighthouse of Broward enhances the lives of people who are blind and visually impaired in Broward County and empowers them to live independent, healthy, employed and fulfilling lives. Direct from Las Vegas, leggy drag legend EDIE brings her sizzling new show “Queen of the Desert,” featuring tales of living in the hottest place on earth, to Aquaplex Fort Lauderdale at 8 p.m. on April 22! With her high-kicking, feverish choreography and steamy storytelling through song and dance, EDIE turns up the heat with this red-hot new show. Part tribute to the 30th Anniversary of the queer cult classic film Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, EDIE will take audiences on a scorching journey out west to the barren badlands she now calls home.

EDIE is best known from Cirque du Soleil’s hit show Zumanity where she starred as the emcee, the “Mistress of Sensuality,” at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. During her 13-year run, EDIE performed 5,600 shows for over six million people. EDIE began her professional dance career at the age of 17 with Ballet Oregon. For the next 11 years, she performed with the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet Chicago, and Pennsylvania Ballet before moving to New York to pursue musical theater. EDIE quickly became a fixture in New York City where she racked up a bevy of awards including Best Drag Queen (HX Award), Best Dance Artist and Entertainer of the Year (Glammy Award). She starred in her autobiographical, off-Broadway show LEGS!, performed on the MTV Video Music Awards, appeared on Sex and the City and was featured at Wigstock and Broadway Bares. She made her Broadway debut alongside Cyndi Lauper and Alan Cumming in the Tony-nominated revival of The Threepenny Opera at Studio 54.

Aquaplex Fort Lauderdale (formerly Lips Fort Lauderdale) is going strong following recent exciting updates. Killian Maddox is a young grocery store worker obsessed with bodybuilding. His dream to be the best in bodybuilding creates negative behavior. Killian has emotional outbreaks and he can’t express his true emotions. As he prepares for a show, he attempts to ask out his love interest at the grocery store where he works. In fact, he asks her out while he’s shopping, only to walk out awkwardly. He is also obsessed with fitness champion Brad who does not reply to Killian’s written letters. In his written letters, Killian talks about his goal and admiration for Brad. Killian also includes his phone number, hoping Brad would call.

Eventually, Brad calls when he has a local show where Killian meets him on a photoshoot. Killian also takes out his love interest where he makes a fool of himself. His date leaves him at the restaurant. He’s distraught as he focuses on his next fitness show. He also assaults the local painting store because the owner would not repaint his grandfather’s house. He eventually drives to the local paint shop and destroys it. The local painter owner’s nephew and friends assault him.

He’s badly beaten prior to his next show. After his beating, he drives to the show where eyewitness ask if he’s OK. He steps on stage, only to pass out. He wakes up in a bathtub, icing his body. His therapist/parole officer consults him in what he will do. He’s clueless as he does not express his true feelings. His true feelings are dark and violent. He fantasizes about killing Brad. His desire to kill him is based upon Brad’s indifferent attitude.

Killian drives home from Brad’s show as he goes home. He throws out his steroids, bodybuilding pictures, and starts flexing in his garage.

Follow Little Foot and her protective herd in Elephants: Giants of the Desert, a larger-than-life 3D documentary film about a rare group of elephants in the Namib Desert, now playing at the AutoNation® IMAX® Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Created by the filmmakers of popular giant screen titles Sea Lions: Life by A Whisker and Serengeti: Journey to the Heart of Africa, Elephants: Giants of the Desert brings the inspiring story of a resilient elephant family surviving against the odds in one of the harshest environments on Earth – Africa’s Namib Desert – to the giant screen for the very first time.

Filmed on location in the Namib, one of the oldest and largest deserts, the film provides unprecedented access to one of only two populations of desert elephants in the world, totaling close to 150 individuals compared to a historic population of 2,500-3,500 in the 18th century. Despite having significant needs for water, these elephants have somehow learned to thrive in this land of extremes. With a slow reproduction cycle of 3+ years and a high mortality rate due partly to the desert conditions, every calf becomes more than precious, and the desert elephants themselves seem to know it well, too.

The film’s story is driven by Little Foot, a newborn calf, as she survives her perilous and most vulnerable first year despite the odds, helped by a fierce extended family of elephants. Audiences will follow Little Foot on an epic and at times whimsical journey, getting up close and personal with the largest land mammals on the planet as they care for the smallest member of the herd. Together the matriarchal herd of aunts and sisters will brave the desert’s elements and use some elephant superpowers, from finding underground aquifers to foreseeing sandstorms. Through the eyes of these elephants, audiences will also see the hidden side of an otherworldly and formidable landscape, where a cast of iconic animals including giraffes, monkeys and lions form a unique canvas of life.

To capture the adventures of Little Foot on screen, the filmmaking crew including Paul Phelan, Tamatea Kohu and Cam Batten lived another kind of adventure behind the camera, lugging intricate production gear into the remote desert, and battling the elements despite being out of their natural habitat. Earning the trust of the elephants, especially around their little one, took patience and respect, for which the filmmakers were rewarded with a close look into the lives of these enigmatic yet endangered creatures.

Spend your Thursday nights at Pérez Art Museum Miami! This week, enjoy sounds by Joel Martinez and happy hour specials on our waterfront terrace. Inside the museum, take a tour, participate in art-making activities with local artists, or explore new exhibitions and permanent collection galleries until 9pm.

Joel Martinez is a trombonist and Venezuelan musician formed under “EL Sistema” by maestro Jose Antonio Abreu. He belonged to many of the most important youth symphony orchestras in his country before joining the Simón Bolivar Symphony Orchestra and the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble, groups that toured the largest theaters and festivals around the world.

Simultaneously, he developed an independent artistic career as a soloist, composer, and project leader focused on jazz and popular music. His first album, “Mirando de Lejos” was released in 2016.

As an arranger and session musician, he has participated in multiple productions with national and international nominations and awards, such as Latin Grammys.

Living in Miami, Martinez occasionally plays with the Miami Symphony Orchestra, is part of the Rawayana band, works on solo projects, and teaches masterclasses and workshops around the world.

Tickets are only required for the museum. Live music is free on the terrace.

Putt for purpose! NFL Hall of Famer and Miami Dolphins great Dwight Stephenson will once again host the Second Annual Norman Bonchick Memorial Golf Tournament in support of Broward Children’s Center at The Club at Weston Hills on Monday, June 2.

The fundraising event will benefit Broward Children’s Center, a nonprofit organization that has been serving infants, children, and young adults with special needs since 1971. Proceeds will support the Center’s crucial programs and medical, developmental, and therapeutic services designed to meet the specific needs of infants, children and young adults who are developmentally disabled and medically fragile and their families.

Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (b. 1961), Silvana Soriano is a visual artist currently based in Miami, Florida. Soriano has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Brazil, Spain, France, USA and Cuba since 1984, including having her work featured at Pinta Miami Art Fair. She has also illustrated several books, spanning from children’s literature to poetry. Soriano graduated with a BFA in Art History and Art Education from Bennett University. She furthered her studies at the esteemed School of Visual Arts, in Brazil. Soriano has been an educator for over two decades, at public schools, non-profits, and universities.

Silvana Soriano’s works in Asking for a Friend draws deep inspiration from the writings of Brazilian author Clarice Lispector, whose exploration of women’s inner lives and existential struggles resonates throughout Soriano’s art. The four large collages on canvas and three smaller drypoint and china ink works reflect themes of intimacy, autonomy, and vulnerability, central to Lispector’s literary universe. Using a layered, textural approach, Soriano brings these literary figures to life, weaving together elements of their narratives into striking visual compositions.

Just as Lispector’s characters grapple with self-discovery and emotional depth, Soriano’s pieces delve into the personal, often hidden, experiences of women navigating their identities. Together, these works create a visual dialogue about resilience, community, and the shared human experience of seeking guidance, echoing the themes of emotional complexity and reflection found in the exhibition.

The OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival spring edition returns April 17 – May 4! Internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, this season’s OUTshine line-up hits Miami-Dade and Broward counties with thought-provoking, inspiring, entertaining and educational star-studded features, documentaries and shorts including premieres from 20 countries.

On Swift Horses (USA, 2025) will open the spring festival on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m., at Regal Cinemas South Beach (1120 Lincoln Road Mall, Miami Beach). Set in the 1950s, this adaptation of Shannon Pufahl’s 2019 novel follows a seemingly sensible newlywed Muriel (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her wayward brother-in-law (Jacob Elordi) as they undertake parallel journeys of risk, romance, and self-discovery. Directed by Daniel Minahan, the film also stars Will Poulter and Diego Calva. An afterparty at The Rum Room will take place after the screening.

The following evening honors Latin filmmaking with the Noche Latina East Coast premiere of Fine Young Men (Hombres Integros) (Mexico, 2024) at 7:15 p.m. at Regal Cinemas South Beach. Directed by Alejandro Andrade Pease, this coming-of-age drama about identity follows Alf, a student at a strict Catholic school, who finds himself drawn to Oliver, a charismatic new classmate. An afterparty at Twisted Tonic Rooftop will follow.

This edition, OUTshine has expanded its Men’s and Ladies Spotlight Films to both counties. On April 19, the Ladies Spotlight Sisters (Canada, 2024), a heartfelt tale of love, identity, and belonging, and the Men’s Spotlight North American premiere of Streets of Gloria (Ruas da Gloria) (Brazil, 2024), a bold, sultry exploration of love and desire, will screen beginning at 7 p.m. at Regal Cinemas South Beach. The afterparties will follow at The Greystone Hotel. On April 26, Hot Milk (United Kingdom, 2025), an emotional family drama set amidst picturesque Almería, Spain, will screen for the ladies and Midas Man (UK, 2024) starring Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as Brian Epstein, the visionary who shaped music history by launching The Beatles’ meteoric rise, will screen for the men beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Paradigm Cinemas: Gateway Fort Lauderdale (1820 E Sunrise Blvd.). On April 23, OUTshine presents its South Florida Shorts Showcase with a special Cocktails & Cinema™ reception at 7 p.m. at O Cinema South Beach (1130 Washington Ave., Miami Beach). Celebrate queer South Florida filmmakers, actors and film crews – from students to seasoned veterans of the industry. A Q&A plus a Tito’s Vodka open-bar afterparty will follow.

Accidental Friends (Amici Per Caso) (Italy, 2024), an international premiere and this season’s Centerpiece Film, screens at 7:30 p.m. on April 24 at Regal Dania Pointe (128 Sunset Dr, Dania Beach). In this Odd Couple-style comedy, directed by Max Nardari, two roommates with contrasting lifestyles must cohabitate despite their differences. An afterparty will follow at Bowlero.

Capitalizing on that sentiment, OUTshine is proud to present the world premiere of the documentary Latter-Day Glory: The Aftermath of Growing Up Queer in the LDS Church (USA, 2025). Directors Brandon Deyette and Chucho E. Quintero follow two queer ex-Mormon missionaries embarking on a transformative journey across America, uncovering the devastating effects of religious dogma on LGBTQ+ members of the LDS Church.

This season’s North American premieres include the dramatic thriller Queerpanorama (USA/Hong Kong/China, 2025), Becoming Ana (La Mitad de Ana) (Spain, 2024), To Live, To Die, To Live Again (Vivre Mourir Renaitre) (France, 2024), Blue For A Boy (Azul de Nino) (Spain, 2024), Some Nights I Feel Like Walking (Mõnel õhtul tahaksin jalutada) (Philippines/Italy/Singapore, 2025) and All For One (France/Belgium, 2025).

In 2022, Soriano contributed to the group exhibition “Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Westport. Additionally, she participated in residencies at Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator (2020/2021), La Maldita Estampa Printshop Barcelona, and Project Art in Miami (2023). Beyond exhibitions and residencies, Soriano’s creates book illustrations, covering a diverse range from children’s literature to poetry. She is also involved in online printmaking magazine publishing.

“Sovereign Joy” explores the performance of festive Black kings and queens among Afro-Mexicans between 1539 and 1640. This fascinating study illustrates how the first African and Afro-Creole people in colonial Mexico transformed their ancestral culture into a shared Afro-Mexican identity. It particularly focuses on how participation in public festivals expressed their culture and subjectivities, while also redefining their colonial condition and social standing. By analyzing this previously understudied aspect of Afro-Mexican Catholic confraternities in both literary texts and visual culture, Dr. Valerio reveals the deeply ambivalent and contradictory meanings behind public processions and festivities, which often re-inscribed structures of race and hierarchy. Were these festivities markers of Catholic subjecthood, and what types of corporate structures did they create to project standing and respectability?

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso, will conclude its powerful 27th season of Icons & Rebels with Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 featuring guest pianist Catherine Lan and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4, “Romantic” at 7:30 p.m. on April 10 at New World Center in Miami Beach.

With its dreamy-yet-modernist structure, Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) remarked that his Piano Concerto No. 3 was “devilishly difficult.” A decade in the making, this popular work is beloved by audiences the world over, beautifully demonstrating Prokofiev’s genius and technical prowess. World class pianist Catherine Lan, and frequent SFSO guest artist will be the featured soloist.

Praised by critics as a pianist with “poise and artistry” (The Lancaster News), “fluent technique, sensitive musicianship and a probing intellect” (Palm Beach Daily News), Dr. Catherine Lan has performed worldwide and across the US at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, Kadriorg Palace in Tallinn, Buda Castle in Budapest, Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki, Euphrasian Basilica (UNESCO) in Poreč, and Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. An avid chamber musician, she has collaborated with Itamar Zorman, James Buswell, David Requiro, Ayano Ninomiya, Aspen String Trio, Henschel String Quartet, and Maxwell String Quartet. Her highly acclaimed performances have been broadcast on WLRN Public Television, “Beethoven Universal TV” series, Maine Public, Fu-Hsin Broadcasting Station, and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Radio. Lan’s many creative projects include her work as the founder and artistic leader of Duo Beaux Arts, Duo Arpeggione, Duo Formosa, Tallinn Piano Trio, Delray Piano Trio, Atlantic Piano Trio, and Beaux Arts Chamber Ensemble. Anton Bruckner’s (1824-1896) Symphony No. 4, dubbed the “Romantic” will transport audiences to a lush soundscape bristling with Medieval romanticism. With its majestic brass fanfares and sweeping strings, Bruckner’s vivid orchestration concludes with a triumphant and uplifting finale.

From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. Stanek Gallery Miami is pleased to present Visual Poetry, a two-person exhibition pushing beyond the representation of naturalistic human likeness to achieve deeper imaginative conversations between the artist and the viewer. Featuring Danny McCaw’s abstracted figure paintings and Gary Weisman’s multidimensional bronze sculpture, this exhibition captures the ongoing relevance of dialogues considering how formalist interpretations of the body continue to convey beautiful truths unobliging to reason.

The night begins with a guided tour of the work by gallery owner Katherine Stanek as she takes viewers through the stories behind the artists work on display, including McCaw’s works on paper, and the details behind how these two contemporary expressionist artists from opposite sides of the country were brought together for the first time in Miami.

Followed by a screening of IAFOR award-winning film, “Changing Place of Making” directed by Jack Weisman, son of Gary Weisman. Glasstress Boca Raton 2025 is the third iteration of the popular Glasstress exhibitions at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Glasstress is a project in Murano, Italy, at the Berengo studio that brings major international artists, many of whom have never worked in glass, to Venice to collaborate with its glass masters. These experts are challenged to rise to the technical challenges that artists at the forefront of contemporary art present and expand beyond their centuries-old techniques. The project also aims to increase the prestige of glass as fine art and to bring Murano’s ancient traditions into the contemporary world. The result is innovative artworks that are dramatic.

Glasstress Boca Raton 2025 includes over twenty works by globally celebrated artists. Irish artist Sean Scully, known for lush abstract paintings, turned to sculpture as an artist-in-residence at the Berengo studio. His Venice Stack is a monumental tower with hand-made glass squares of vibrant colors measuring nearly eight feet tall. Another colorful installation of multiple glass urns by German artist Thomas Schütte, whose work is the subject of a current retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, will also be included.

Afro-Cuban MacArthur Fellow Maria Magdalena Compos-Pons’s contribution to the exhibition is a mobile of abstracted butterflies dedicated to the memory of Breonna Taylor. Laure Prouvost, winner of the prestigious Turner Prize, represented France in the 2019 Venice Biennale and has since collaborated regularly with the masters in Murano. She will contribute a nature-focused installation to this exhibition. Russian artist Anna Jermolaewa made work at the Berengo studio for her exhibition representing Austria in the 2024 Venice Biennale.

Other artists to be included in Glasstress Boca Raton 2025 are Chinese artist Ai Wei Wei with a giant chandelier, British artist Fiona Banner with her life-size glass scaffold, and multiple works by the celebrated British artist Tony Cragg.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso, will conclude its powerful 27th season of Icons & Rebels with Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 featuring guest pianist Catherine Lan and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4, “Romantic” at 7:30 p.m. on April 9 at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. A pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason will take place 30 minutes before the show at The Parker featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the work and composer.

With its dreamy-yet-modernist structure, Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) remarked that his Piano Concerto No. 3 was “devilishly difficult.” A decade in the making, this popular work is beloved by audiences the world over, beautifully demonstrating Prokofiev’s genius and technical prowess. World class pianist Catherine Lan, and frequent SFSO guest artist will be the featured soloist.

Praised by critics as a pianist with “poise and artistry” (The Lancaster News), “fluent technique, sensitive musicianship and a probing intellect” (Palm Beach Daily News), Dr. Catherine Lan has performed worldwide and across the US at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, Kadriorg Palace in Tallinn, Buda Castle in Budapest, Temppeliaukio Church in Helsinki, Euphrasian Basilica (UNESCO) in Poreč, and Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. An avid chamber musician, she has collaborated with Itamar Zorman, James Buswell, David Requiro, Ayano Ninomiya, Aspen String Trio, Henschel String Quartet, and Maxwell String Quartet. Her highly acclaimed performances have been broadcast on WLRN Public Television, “Beethoven Universal TV” series, Maine Public, Fu-Hsin Broadcasting Station, and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Radio. Lan’s many creative projects include her work as the founder and artistic leader of Duo Beaux Arts, Duo Arpeggione, Duo Formosa, Tallinn Piano Trio, Delray Piano Trio, Atlantic Piano Trio, and Beaux Arts Chamber Ensemble. Her album credits include Incandescent Piano Recital (Centaur), Bach & Beethoven – Live & Unedited and Saint Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 with UBC Symphony Orchestra under Jesse Read. Anton Bruckner’s (1824-1896) Symphony No. 4, dubbed the “Romantic” will transport audiences to a lush soundscape bristling with Medieval romanticism. With its majestic brass fanfares and sweeping strings, Bruckner’s vivid orchestration concludes with a triumphant and uplifting finale.

From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. Island City Stage in Wilton Manors, Brévo Theatre in Pompano Beach and GableStage in Coral Gables will present their collaborative production of Fat Ham, the 2022 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by James Ijames, this spring. This first-time historic partnership among three of South Florida’s leading theatre companies, made possible by a generous $250,000 grant from The Warten Foundation, will bring this imaginative and witty reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet that tackles identity, belonging and generational issues, to both Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Fat Ham will premiere at Island City Stage from April 3 – May 4 and then moves to GableStage from May 16 – June 15, 2025.
Fat Ham transforms Shakespeare’s Hamlet into an over-the-top tale set in a North Carolina BBQ pit. With a twist, the Danish castle becomes a Southern backyard barbecue, and Juicy, a Black, gay southern kid, navigates familial legacies and a ghostly demand for vengeance. The clash of generations unfolds in this award-winning adaptation, exploring the complexities of identity and violence. Jesse Green, theater critic for The New York Times wrote, “That Fat Ham achieves its happy, even joyful, ending honestly, without denying the weight of forces that make Hamlet feel just as honest, is a sign of how capacious and original the writing is, growing the skin of its own necessity instead of merely burrowing into Shakespeare’s.”
Fat Ham is directed by T.M. Pride and stars Toddra Brunson (Rabby), Henry Cadet (Juicy), Melvin Huffnagle (Rev/Papa), Cassidy Joseph (Opal), Denzel McCausland (Larry), Mikhael Mendoza (Tio) and April Nixon (Tedra).
Fat Ham is presented by an arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. The play runs for one hour and 35 minutes with no intermission.
Individual show tickets at Island City Stage start at $43. A Mimosa Sunday Brunch sponsored by Misty Daniels will take place on April 13 with tickets at $55. As part of this unique presentation, the theatre companies will also offer a series of fun cookouts and community conversations to engage audiences.

Claws for a cause! Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade will once again celebrate its 14th Annual “Claws for Kids” in memory of Judy Kramer at Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach on Tuesday, May 6. Registration and reception begin at 11 a.m., followed by entertainment and dining at noon. Guests will delight in Joe’s world-famous stone crabs and signature items without the wait. The fundraising lunch is one of the last chances to enjoy stone crabs before stone crab season ends.

Belkys Nerey, Channel 7 News Anchor and journalist, returns as master of ceremonies, alongside mother-daughter duo Co-chairs, Lisa Mendelson and Lindsey Mendelson Pearson, and Special Events Chair, Olga Guilarte.

“Claws for Kids” is held in memory of Judy Kramer, a longtime Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Board member, who helped conceptualize the event and chaired it since its inception until her passing in 2021.

Proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s crucial programs and services at its six Clubs and sites combined, including its educational after-school programs, tutoring and homework assistance, STEM, recreation, dance, arts and crafts, mentoring and summer and athletic programs. These programs help children realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and NAMI Broward County will host it’s 4th annual “Artful Minds” fundraiser on Thursday, May 29th from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at MAD Arts.

Artful Minds is a showcase of “art as therapy” igniting conversations surrounding mental health and wellness and inspiring hope through art.
All artwork displayed at Artful Minds is curated by artists living with mental health conditions or who address the theme of mental health. Attendees will gain a better understanding of mental health conditions through the artists’ works and their paths to recovery.
Funds raised from Artful Minds directly benefit NAMI Broward County’s mission to enhance the quality of life for individuals and families affected by mental health conditions through education, support, and advocacy.
NAMI Broward County has implemented many free programs and initiatives that have significantly increased mental health awareness and support. In 2024, the organization reached over 9,000 people through its nationally-recognized Signature programs, including NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group, NAMI Family Support Groups, and NAMI Ending the Silence, as well as a new local Mentor-to-Mentee program.

Florida continues to own a devastating statistic when it comes to childhood drownings. The Sunshine State has the highest rate of drowning in the nation for those under 18 years old, more than double the next closest states of Texas and Arizona.

To counter those statistics, the YMCA of South Florida, which has one of the most comprehensive water safety and drowning prevention programs, highlights the importance of swim lessons with its annual “Swim for Jenny,” a week-long initiative providing free swim lessons to individuals of all ages throughout South Florida, with the goal of reducing the risk of drowning and promoting a culture of aquatic safety in local communities.

Generously underwritten by Nicklaus Children’s Health System, this year’s Swim for Jenny is set for March 24-28 at the following YMCA locations:

• L.A. Lee YMCA/Mizell Community Center – 1409 NW 6th St, Fort Lauderdale
• Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center – 3161 Taft Street, Hollywood

Launched in 2013, “Swim for Jenny” is named after a young girl who drowned two years prior because she couldn’t swim. Since the initiative was implemented, more than 25,000 people have taken part, and more than 100,000 swim lessons have been provided.

Miami-Dade and Broward counties lead the nation in child drownings, and last year alone, 101 child fatal drownings were reported in Florida. For every child who dies from drowning, another seven receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with retired firefighter and historian Frank P. Sullivan, author of Buddy Leads the Way. He will be available to meet guests and autograph copies of his book on Saturday, March 15, from 11 a.m. – noon. His appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed.

Frank P. Sullivan has been a member of the fire service for over 50 years as a volunteer and paid first responder. He was third generation fire fighter, starting as soon as he turned 18, volunteering in Haverstraw, New York. After moving to Florida in 1973, he switched from construction and was one of the original five hired firefighters in the City of Miramar in 1975. During the years at Miramar, his dalmatians became mascots and served the city as well. He was Fireman Frank and enjoyed teaching fire safety in the public schools, children’s hospital and nursing homes as part of his job. His love of the fire service is evident in his historical accounting of how Dalmatians became fire dogs. Sullivan retired from Miramar as a captain in 2005 and can be seen around town with his current dog, Buddy, and his 1934 restored antique fire truck.
