Spectrum has provided Life Is Art with a donated booth in which to bring a presentation of Miami artists around the theme of [inter.play] exploring the ways the arts and the community interact and build upon each other. The focus of [mi.ami][inter.play] is collaboration. Collaboration between artists, collaboration between the arts and the community, collaboration between Miami and the Art World at large. This is a juried featuring both experienced and emerging Miami artists. All work is for sale, with only a small commission going to the Life Is Art volunteers.

Spectrum’s theme of [inter.play] works perfectly for Miami, and for Life Is Art. Our mission is to create positive change in the community with arts and culture. Life Is Art operates in exactly that interplay between the community and the arts and how those build on and feed each other. Using the arts to build our city is a very hot topic in Miami right now, and we are excited to be able to showcase some of the best our city has to offer.

James Echols, co-founder of Life Is Art said, “We were very pleased to be included by Spectrum Miami last year and are excited to participate once again.” He went on to say, “I am happy to hear that Spectrum has made it a point to feature more South Florida artists in the show this year. We strongly feel that one of the components that has been missing from the Art Basel week is any sort of credit given to our local arts. I applaud Spectrum for being so proactive in that area.”

Ann Berchtold, Show Director Art San Diego and Spectrum Miami, said, “As the Founder and Director of ART SAN DIEGO, I have always integrated the local arts community into the show through programs like Spotlight Artists, LaunchPad program, and Art Labs – which invite local emerging spaces and institutions into the fair to create site-specific installations around a current theme.” Of her new work in Miami, Berchtold says, “Through my partnership now with Redwood Media Group – we will now be incorporating these programs into the Spectrum Miami show – with hopes to integrate the local Miami art scene into the show. Project: Street Art Girls
Artists: Aquarela Sabol + Lulu
“Street Art Girls” is a gallery collaboration piece between Aquarela Sabol and Lulu, two Miami Based female artists that also paint murals and street art. The piece is 24″ x 24″ created with oils, spray paint and mixed media on four 12″ wooden panels.

Project: Icons
Artist: David Gary Lloyd
Inspired by the sociological effects of the advertising world, David Gary Lloyd unfolds symbolic photographs to challenge the messages conveyed by mass marketing.
These images were produced in Miami, showcasing the cultures provocative allure with use of color and sexuality.

* David received diplomas in Photography and Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Exhibitions of his work have been held in Venues ranging from Miami, New York Texas and Vermont. Lloyd currently lives and works from the eclectic art neighborhood Wynwood located in Miami.

Project: Chaos Math = Art (Right&Left Collide)
Artist: David Pino
Mathematical representation in Digital format. This portfolio is designed to disrupt the notion that Right side thinkers and Left side thinkers cannot work on the opposing side. Using mathematical formulas I have been creating fractal art pieces on plexiglass and metal sheet siding. The images are extremely detailed and come to life when lit with proper lighting, revealing a luminescence that is unique to the format. Math and Art collide to create pieces that take weeks to render on a high power computer. creating works that are uniquely organic, despite completely mathematically generated. Disrupting the idea that math leads to non-organic shapes (cylinders and triangles).

* Dr. David Pino graduated with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2010 from Nova Southeastern University. Since that time he was gone to practice as a pharmacist, manage a business as a pharmacy manager, and now assists in managing a store location. He enjoys the visual arts and specifically enjoys shooting photos, computer rendered images, and videos. Stock photography is a passion he enjoys and is actively submitting pieces for use in websites and magazine publications. His accolades include winning photography competitions (Intel’s “A Momentary Lapse”, Scott Kelby’s WorldWide Photo Walk local winner, and Camelot Days 2012 – 2nd place) and has created commercials for American Express, San Diego Wildlife Conservatory, and Cosi Restaurants. In recent years he has been captivated by mathematical renders and is hoping to participate in a local art fair in 2014 to show his portfolio and increase awareness of these types of mathematical pieces as abstract art. He currently resides in Miami, FL.

Project: Forged and Forbidden
Artists: Deborah Gregg + Janet Gold + Andrea Huffman
This 3-dimensional mixed media work, titled ‘Forged and Forbidden’, could be a commentary on censorship. It is about looking beyond what is presented to you. It is a deconstruction/construction collaboration and includes uniquely vintage found objects.

* Deborah earned a B.F.A. in Graphic Design/Illustration from the University of Miami, studied at the Arts Students League in New York City, and Oxbow School of Art in Saugatuck, Michigan. She began her career as an Art Director for ad agencies, first in Michigan, then as Creative Director in South Florida. She has received numerous Regional, District, and National ADDY awards, both in Michigan and Florida. Later, she transitioned into mixed-media art, while also teaching art to children and adults in an art museum environment. She is a contributing artist in national publications. Deborah’s award-winning work appears in many juried, solo and group exhibitions and is in private collections in the U.S. as well. She has had recent solo exhibitions at the Coral Springs Museum of Art, Sunrise Civic Center Gallery and most recently, at the ArtsPark Gallery in Hollywood, FL. She is a member of the Coral Springs Art Guild, Broward Art Guild, Coral Springs Museum of Art and the Six Hands Collaborative.
* Janet Gold is a professional artist and an art educator for over 30 years in South Florida. Her work has been represented both nationally and internationally in galleries and museums. She is a member of the National Association of Women Artists, National Collage Society, and the innovative Six Hands Collaborative.
* After thirty years as an Art Educator in Broward County schools, Andrea Huffman retired from teaching to pursue her work as a full time artist. Working primarily in textiles and collage, Ms. Huffman has shown her work throughout Florida in juried, group and solo exhibits, including the Lee Wagener Gallery, a Broward County public art space at the Ft. Lauderdale airport and at Everglades National Park. She has received several awards and grants for her work. In 2011 she was one of two art educators selected from throughout Florida for a summer Artist-in-Residence program at the prestigious Hermitage Artist Retreat in Sarasota County. In December 2014, Ms. Huffman will be participating in “Piecing Together for a Changing Planet”, a juried fiber art exhibit that will be traveling to twelve U.S. National Parks over the next few years. She continues to share her passion for art through various teaching opportunities throughout Florida and is a member of Six Hand Collaborative.

Project: Muse

Muse… the stimulus that will inspire you to muse
Muse, the brain-child of Sergio, Craig L, and Derek Wilson is a completely interactive installation that attempts to remove the barrier between art and the spectator. The Project inspires the viewer, now participant to act as artist while they interplay with the child-like building blocks, that when assembled correctly, create an original painting(s). The large-scale building blocks of art, not only touch upon a universal nostalgia associated with childhood but provide for a truly one-of-a-kind authentic experience.

* Miami-native Derek Wilson is a local Artist and a veteran art teacher for Dade County Public Schools. Mr. Wilson, who currently teaches at John A. Ferguson Senior High School, devotes his time to developing challenging curriculum for a variety of art courses including IB Art and Advanced Placement Art. A product of Dade County Public Schools himself and a graduate Florida International University, Wilson has consistently exhibited in a variety of galleries and project spaces since earning his degree in Fine Art Sculpture. In addition to his busy exhibition schedule, Wilson is most proud of the work executed for charity events and organizations like, The March of Dimes, Habitat for Humanity, Touching Miami with Love, and Easter Seals; to name a few. “My methodology as it relates to art is always in a state of flux. I am somewhat of an alchemist, spontaneously mixing materials and subtly changing formulas as well as styles to suit the concept I want to address. I am a New Media Artist (always looking for new means of expression). I have an unquenchable thirst for the experiment; the process -this is what drives me.”
* Craig Ledermann was born and raised in Queens, New York. As a teenager he and his family moved to Boca Raton, Florida where he graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. After contemplating further education, he decided to make a life change. Craig had always enjoyed building and creating things with his father while growing up, so in 2009 he took a chance and headed back to New York to work with family friends. There he learned about construction and carpentry while building sets for “White Collar” (Television Show) on USA Network. He returned to Florida in 2010 continuing his Set Fabrication and Design work on many different TV and Movie sets around South Florida. With his free time Craig started to explore Wynwood, Miami and learn about street art. He had seen graffiti as a child in New York City, but here it was different, here artists painted large scale murals on walls as big as 100+ feet. Being drawn into the culture Craig has now become part of the Wynwood movement, fabricating custom art installations, building wooden canvases, even assisting major Miami street artists with their large scale murals.
* Specializing in pop art influenced by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein and Marvel comics, Registered Artist’s street art can be seen throughout many Miami neighborhoods. RA is a voracious guerrilla artist who puts his work on display through stencils, decals, wheat pastes, murals and stickers. Finding balance between the gallery and urban landscapes, Registered Artist constantly gives back to his community as the founded and director of Free Art Fridays, Miami Chapter: a free art scavenger hunt that’s open to artist and art lovers alike.

Project: ASK, TELL!
Artist: Ed Stevens
The piece “Out on the Gridiron – Thank You Michael Sam!” continues this dialogue with the community through the metaphor of team sports. ASK, TELL#2 won Best Mixed Media in the United Arts Competition and Show in June 2014. The ASK, TELL pieces were featured in May 2014 at gallery Tedd’s Art Works in Ft. Lauderdale.
* Ed Stevens began his career in visual and performing arts at Boston University, where he studied art history and visual arts and received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He spent the last 20 years as a playwright, director and set designer, receiving the Kennedy Center’s David Mark Cohen Award. His work was produced in New York City, Provincetown, St. Petersburg and San Diego. He moved to South Florida in 2012, where he creates striking multi-media assemblies that incorporate social commentary and a sense of dramatic storytelling. He was the featured artist in May 2014 at gallery Tedd’s Art Works in Ft. Lauderdale.

Project: Young Van Gogh’s Premonition

Young Van Gogh’s Premonition, a collaboration between Eleazar Delgado & Monique Lassooij. Monique is known for her painting famous people as children in her signature color scheme while Eleazar is known for his bright abstract palate knife work. An unlikely pairing has given birth to a vision of a young Van Gogh having a premonition of his destiny.

* Born in Oklahoma and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Eleazar Delgado practiced Architecture and Interior Design. It was Miami’s radiant sunshine and the vibrant colors of the city that influenced his decision to become an artist. Among his accolades are Dade Heritage Trust selecting “Sunshine Culture” for the cover of their 2012 program, Miami Dade Preservation League chose “Joe Sent Me” for the official Art Deco Weekend poster. “Sea Grasses in the Sky”, a public mural in Downtown Miami delights thousands of commuters everyday, as it is visible from I-95 & his latest commission was from the Miami Short Film Festival poster.
* In The Netherlands Ms. Lassooij started out as an abstract painter but over the years she developed a passion for figurative painting. After having studied with Dutch artists such as Pien Hazenberg and Henk Hubenet, she attended the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in The Hague and has gone on to receive several commissions and can be found in public places such as the Town Hall of the city of Scheveningen in The Netherlands. Her paintings hang in numerous private collections in the US and abroad.

MIxed media paintings inspired by poetry, quotes, reflections in my journal. Each piece is an affirmation, an invitation to reflect on how we engage life and how no matter what our background, or differences we are all able to connect through the sharing of archetypal, universal experiences. Each piece is a collaboration with other art media, with writing, and with the viewers themselves.

* I am an engineer of assets from an opposite spectrum of life, an artist by heart and a photographer by nature. At the beginning of my career, I tried to comprehend light and all its waves by mirroring its influence over canvas using only acrylic paint and my imagination; but in a revelation, it became clear to me that if I wanted to understand light, I needed to follow its behavior in real life. Consequently, I started composing and recording light in Instamatics and without realizing it, I was becoming a photographer.

Project: Going for the Arts

The art classroom is essential to foster art awareness to future generations in our community. “Going for the Arts,” is a digital photomontage consisting of over 1000 digitally stitched images creating a impossible aerial perspectives of this fostering taking place in a MIami-Dade art class.

* Harold Rosario is a Miami-based contemporary artist. Primarily focusing on the medium of painting, he has also branched out into the digital era, creating works like “Going for the Arts,” a digital photomontage consisting of over 1000 digitally stitched images to create impossible aerial perspectives. Recently, he has added to the definition of “Street Art” by embarking on a creative series titled Interact With Art. Here he uses social media to engage and awaken followers to the art which is all around us. Using clever sketches, props, poses and a bit of humor, the artist interacts with public art, architecture, sculptures, landscaping, culinary art and the endless supply of artforms that shapes our daily lives. What started as a personal challenge to push his creative potential, evolved into a campaign for art awareness.

* Ian Fichman was born in Miami, Florida in 1978. He had a strong interest in metal sculpture beginning in his early youth, and throughout his adolescence he experimented in various art mediums. In 2002, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Studio Art from Florida State University, and in 2006 he received a second Bachelor of Science degree in Video Game Art Design from the Art Institute of California, San Diego. This eventually led him to a career in graphic design and digital illustration, but in 2010 his focus returned to sculpture.

Project: Floral Fantasies Real and Imagined

* I create small worlds of movement, colors, and shapes to entice that observer to travel through my work surface—colliding with the images, finding their way around to yet another shape, and finding it as alluring to linger gazing at them as I still find it to linger in a garden; my work is also representative of the twists, turns, bumps, and alternatives each of us transverses in the course of our daily life.
* I not only create art, but spend much time studying the processes, past and present that culminate in the finished pieces. Art history captivates my interest as much as making something of my own.

* Monique Lassooij was born and raised in The Netherlands and moved several years ago to Miami, Florida. Her work explores the paradox in modern pop culture & society, sometimes clearly visible and sometimes through an underlining dichotomy interjected with humor. Ms. Lassooij finds her inspiration in colors and how those colors affect the subject whether she is painting on canvas, wood or a wall. Her subjects are often not placed within a context-giving background, allowing a single or combination of colors and geometric shapes to illuminate the chosen topic. Her paintings hang in numerous private collections in the US and abroad.

Project: Are skulls happier in Miami?

It is a collection of skulls in stainless steel, painted in bright colors. Artists in all ages have been fascinated by skulls, countless paintings, sculptures have been created, cults celebrate the skull. Skulls have a very dark side, but also represent knowledge.
How does south Florida experience skulls? Do they look happier here? Are they in vacation mode?

I was born in 1952 of Puertorican parents and lived 18 yrs. in Long Island,. I’m a self taught artist. I began drawing and painting in 1970 though I did so since I was five years old, and started sculpting in 1974. For the last 42 years, I have specialized in sculpture in ceramic and fiberglass mostly life size. I have recently moved to Miami in hopes of becoming a part of the growing art scene here.

Project: Pulse’
Artist: Stefanie Caro
Pulse’ is a 3-dimensional page made of three layers of meticulously carved water color paper. The scene features a view of downtown Miami, just above the Miami river with iconic buildings and structures turned into musical instruments. A group of large scaled robots, made from found objects and scrap metal utilize the scenery and interact with them as if they were musical instruments, thus bringing this otherwise concrete jungle to life.

* I’ve never been an advocate for the spoken word. It’s difficult to imagine an effective form of communication within the boundaries of strictly audible cognition. I first became an illustrator as a means to understand the space around me, on a level deeper than what my appointed bi-pedaled senses could provide. The world was this complex and painfully interesting thing that I could not filter and dilute to the point of articulation, but I was hungry to try. Through a process of sensory alchemy, I found that I could combine colors, texture, and line to express my small discoveries somehow in a language that was foreign to all but myself until it was laid on a two dimensional surface.

Redwood Media Group, today announced the return of its celebrated fine art show, SPECTRUM Miami featuring ArtSpot International Art Fair, from Wednesday, December 3 – Sunday, December 7 in the heart of the Wynwood Art District during Art Week Miami. SPECTRUM is more than an art show — it’s a 5-day fine art experience featuring top galleries and artists from across the US and around the world, along with live performances, curated Art Lab projects and Late Night parties drawing crowds from all corners of the city.

New to this year’s show is a special curated Art Labs series, featuring educational projects and seminars by leading Miami-based art institutions and industry leaders. One such project—[mi.ami][inter.play], by local nonprofit partner Life Is Art—will be an artistic collaboration within the community. Another, Yo Miami, will be a live, invitational mural painting endeavor involving both experienced artists and up-and-comers.

Other surprises include a partnership with the Cirque du Soleil show, Amaluna, which includes performance art and ticket giveaways throughout the show. There may also be a dramatic photo shoot with dancers by international bookseller and world-renowned photographer Jordan Matter!

The show’s signature VIP opening preview party, SPECTRUM After Dark, takes place from 6 – 10 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, and includes artist unveilings, performance art, music and DJ, a full cash bar, complimentary cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres. The following nights, from Thursday, December 4 – Saturday, December 6, features Late Night parties from 7 – 9 p.m. daily.

Housed within the SPECTRUM tent for its 2nd year is the independent show, ArtSpot International, organized by Aldo Castillo. ArtSpot presents modern and cutting-edge galleries exhibiting contemporary art, including photography, works on paper, sculpture, and installations from emerging and established artists. The show merges a range of international art with strong Latin American influences. Castillo, the show curator and director, is one of the most respected authorities of modern and contemporary art and has overseen the direction of more than 250 international art exhibitions.

The juried show of contemporary art features original paintings, photography, sculpture, mixed media, glass and limited edition prints. By catering to high-end collectors, buyers and art enthusiasts, SPECTRUM Miami offers gallery owners, designers, architects and collectors extraordinary works by innovative and established artists and galleries from around the world.
