Chef Jeremiah Bullfrog, chef/owner of gastroPod Miami and creator of the popular PIG (Pork is Good), presents Duck Duck Goose (DDG), a new culinary event taking place Saturday, June 4, 2016 from 5pm-9pm. For the event, Bullfrog and his cadre of knife-slingers are taking it to the birds with DDG, featuring 12 of Miami’s top chefs showing off their creativity and skill with locally raised and pastured fowl from Lake Meadows Naturals in Ocoee, Florida. For its inaugural run, DDG is bringing a star-studded lineup of South Florida’s most inventive purveyors of haute cuisine, gourmet street food and craft cocktails, with familiar faces from PIG, new additions, and lots of live fire cooking of poultry on strings. Participating chefs include Brad Kilgore of Alter, Will Crandall of Izzy’s Fish & Oyster, James Strine of Cafe Boulud in West Palm Beach, Patrick Rebholz of Quality Meats, Phuket Thongsodchaveondee (Cake) of Cake Thai, Gabriel Ask of Faena Hotel, Aaron Brooks of Edge Steak and Bar, Steve Santana of Taquiza, Brian Mullins of Ms. Cheezious, Babe Froman of Babe Froman Fine Sausages, Josh Gripper of The Dutch, and of course Jeremiah Bullfrog of gastropod. Mixologist John Lermayer of Sweet Liberty will be slinging the libations. The Miami Design District and James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Schwartz are celebrating summer with Genuine Summer Series: a three-event culinary experience series in the Design District’s Palm Court with food from Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink (MGFD).

Kicking off the series on Friday, June 10 is Sundown Grillout, an outdoor feast off the Lynx Grill featuring pairings by Wines of Germany with special attention to Riesling varietals. Guests will enjoy a cocktail hour with passed bites followed by a three-course seated dinner at farm-style tables in breezy Palm Court. The evening will feature live music from Marcus Grant “Mutes & Roots” Jazz Trio.

Passed Bites – Crispy Shortrib romesco, duchilly hazelnuts; Slow Roasted Pork Pizza, fig, grilled onion, fontina, arugula; Wood-Grilled Florida Shrimp dill aioli; and Ricotta Crostini apricot thyme jam alongside Local Fish Ceviche and Classic Deviled Eggs. Paired with 2014 Blue Fish Original Dry Riesling, Pfalz.

First– Florida Mangos with torn herbs, bean sprouts, peanuts, nuoc cham vinaigrette, and fried onions. Paired with 2013 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Riesling Kabinett, Mosel.

Second – Rotisserie Leg of Lamb served family style with new potatoes, preserved meyer lemon, salsa verde, watercress along with merguez lamb sausage, pickled red onions, cucumbers, and yogurt. Paired with 2012 August Kesseler “N” Pinot Noir, Rheingau.

Dessert – Grilled Peaches with crème fraiche, Florida honey, pistachios, and thyme. Paired with NV Dr. L Sparkling Riesling, Mosel.

Batuke Samba Funk is a high energy Brazilian band that mixes rhythms such as Funk from the 70’s with Afro Samba, Brazilian Big Band, Batucada, Soul, and R&B. The band attracts a mixed crowd with people from all ages and nationalities dancing in every performance. The goal of Batuke is to “brazilianize” American sounds and “americanize” Brazilian sounds in a perfect balanced fusion. What a year it’s been for American country singer-songwriter Brandy Clark. Clark has garnered nominations for the 2015 CMA Awards, ACM Awards and Grammy Awards, and won the Country Music Association award for Song of the Year for co-writing the hit “Follow Your Arrow”. Clark’s first single from her new album, “Girl Next Door” was recently released and has made it to several Top 40 Country lists. On Memorial Day weekend, Clark will be performing live at Seminole May 28, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. with a free Line Dancing Class on the Seminole Theatre Terrace at 6:00 p.m., where you can learn custom dances to some of Clark’s own songs that you will hear later in the concert.

Opening Act Levon’s lead singer and guitarist Michael Hall remembers his father listening to country and 70’s rock bands and thinking, “This is the kind of music people want to get back to, music I want to get back to. Honest lyrics and memorable melodies. Hopefully our music speaks to that,” he says. With influences like Pure Prairie League, CSN, Keith Urban and The Eagles, Levon’s sound is a combination of “Then” and “Now”.

We invite you to join us for breakfast and networking to discuss funding issues with Tom Schramm, from Schramm & Associates.

Grant funding is often the initial funding an organization receives to get started. However, grants should not be the only source of funding to sustain an organization and to fund its growth. This workshop will identify funding sources other than grants and look in particular at two that provide the greatest return on the investment of your time and effort but that you may not have considered for your organization.

Thomas Schramm, a Professional in Residence at the Center for Social Change, has 29 years of fundraising experience in healthcare, arts, education, environmental and wildlife, social services and humanitarian organizations in Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties. Proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s many positive programs, including after school programs, homework assistance, computer training, social skills, dance, arts & crafts, professional mentoring, and summer and athletic programs, for area children who need them the most.

To ensure children have access to food during summer, Feeding South Florida®, the leading domestic hunger-relief organization in the South Florida region, is hosting its 2nd annual End Summer Hunger Sort-a-Thon on Saturday, June 18 at its main warehouse in Pembroke Park in Broward County. Volunteers — 100 maximum per shift — will sort donated food. Individuals and groups are welcome.

Throughout Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties, the counties which Feeding South Florida serves, 280,630 children are in need of food assistance. Many children rely on a nutritious breakfast and lunch through the National School Lunch Program and are at risk of suffering from hunger during summer break.
Sort-A-Thons are popular volunteer events for locals and corporations. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required, please visit www.feedingsouthflorida.org to register.
**Note: No children under the age of 12. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, and the 2004 National Trumpet Jazz Competition, Jean Caze has emerged as one of today’s most exciting new voices in jazz. At the age of twenty-seven Jean has performed with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Najee, Arturo Sandoval, Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, and George Duke, to name a few. Jean also played with the legendary rock group “Chicago” live on NBC (while in high school), and has opened for the Wynton Marsalis Quartet. Most recently, the Haitian-born trumpeter won second place in the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Jean has received abundant praise from critics, peers and jazz enthusiasts alike who have taken to Jean’s lyrical tone and tasteful ideas. He has been hailed a “true improviser” and even compared to Miles Davis by fellow trumpet player Carl Saunders. Though his roots are solidly planted in jazz, Jean can flawlessly switch between genres. Having already released one CD, “Miami Jazz Scene,” he is currently working on completing his second.

About the Bird Road Art Walk:
Five years strong, the Bird Road Art Walk continues to bring artists and collectors together. On the 3rd Saturday of each month, artists’ open their studios, along with alternative spaces and galleries that dot the industrial area along SW 74 Ave & SW 75 Ave.

The event features a broad range of contemporary, emerging and established artists working in a variety of mediums ranging from photography to sculpture, mixed media, conceptual art, ceramics, drawing, painting etc… art and unique items for all tastes and budgets.

The Bird Road Art Walk is FREE & OPEN to the public.
The event is organized and funded by the Bird Road Art District, Inc., a non-profit volunteer based organization.

Berger Singerman, Florida’s business law firm, has announced it will host a series of educational workshops from June 6- 10 to prepare local business owners for the upcoming hurricane season. With a total of 14 named storms, eight hurricanes and three major hurricanes predicted for the 2016 storm season, this year is expected to be the most active season Florida has seen since 2012 according to a recent forecast from The Weather Company’s Professional Division.

These seminars are open to the public and will be hosted by the firm’s team members specializing in insurance, real estate and construction litigation. The workshops will focus on an array of topics aimed to prepare the community in the unfortunate event of a disaster.

The series will include:
• Monday, June 6:
o “Best Practices in Handling Insurance Claims” webinar: Presented by attorneys Gina Clausen Lozier, Michael Higer and Jeff Wertman, this online course will provide insight on best practices to assist condominium and homeowner associations with insurance claims. Manatee Lagoon is offering a new way for visitors to find their center during Mindful Moments at Manatee Lagoon, a weekly yoga series held on the beautiful waterway of the Lake Worth Lagoon. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, or MOCA, presents award-winning trumpet player Jean Caze as part of the monthly Jazz at MOCA series. In 2006, the Haitian-born trumpeter released his first album, Miami Jazz Scene. He has gone on to open for Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, and Jimmy Heath and in 2010, he accepted a position in Michael Bublé’s touring band. His latest album, Amédé, was released in 2015 to glowing reviews.

Caze has been awarded many scholarships to attend some of the country’s top musical institutions, including Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program where he received his first formal training and the Queens College Center for Preparatory Studies in Music Program. Caze is the winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition and won second place in the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

The public is invited to come sit under the stars and listen to the trumpeting talent of Jean Caze.

Cristian Lazzari spent an autumn week in Nepal in 2014 photographing the beautiful country and its people. The following spring, a devastating earthquake destroyed most of what he had captured with his lens. Proxy Selves is a poetry/creative nonfiction workshop that will explore and give voice to the multitudes of self contained within each writer.
Participants will explore how relationships, politics, setting, time and other factors alter others’ perception of us as individuals, and how projection of self is altered under different circumstances. Participants can expect to produce a series of short poetry/creative nonfiction pieces, gain inspiration for further writing after the workshop concludes, and become more comfortable with developing a drafting process.

Writers of any level are welcome. This generative workshop is designed to silence the inner critic that plagues most writers, and allow access to an uninhibited writing voice–or as Whitman might phrase it, sound a “barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.”

Yo Miami and artist Kareem David Piper are pleased to announce the opening reception for “Metaxy and the Magic City.” Concrete Beach Brewery will be providing refreshments for the opening and closing receptions, occurring respectively on May 21st, 2016 and July 21st 2016. Music will be by Kwesi Kris. Kareem’s work reflects the contemporary human condition of existing in a transient state. His work questions the true depth of these relationships created with people and places which are encountered only in passing. They evoke a feeling of internal splitting or dislocation, and force the viewer to question how they perceive their own reality. This body of work reflects Piper’s feelings and perceptions of various social settings and transient scenes he encounters on a daily basis while living in Miami. The depicted images are sourced from photos the artist has taken while riding the Miami Dade Metrorail. The Metrorail is very close to the artist’s studio, and is itself very symbolic of the transient state that exists here in Miami. This exhibition serves as a celebration and validation of the Master of Fine Art in painting degree he will be receiving this year from MIU. His studio can be found in downtown Miami at 500 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL 33132 and is available for visits by appointment only.

Step back in time for a vintage-inspired cultural immersion at Swyngwood in Miami’s cultural arts epicenter, Wynwood on May 20, 2016. Swyngwood’s mission is to inspire social change by bringing people together for deeper human connections through vintage swing dance and its culture.

In the 1940s, segregation was commonplace, but several Historians credit swing dance and music for leading the way to integration, bridging the gaps between communities. 4IT announced a partnership with the American Red Cross in their mission to make South Florida homes resistant to fires. 4IT will aid in the installation of smoke detectors in local homes to raise awareness on the threat that residential fires pose to Americans.

Whether you are a young professional just entering the workforce, or someone more seasoned and ready for retirement, we can all agree on one thing, BULLYING HURTS and it has a lifetime effect on everyone involved! This is an opportunity for you to make a difference in the lives of teens by connecting with other professionals and networking for a good cause.

You may donate to a team to help raise money even if you’re not able to attend by simply clicking “Donate” instead of “Join”. All donors will be prompted to create a free account, and even if you’re not attending it will ask for your shirt size. If we have any left over shirts you might receive a surprise in the mail.

Your donation will help cover the cost of housing, meals, t-shirts, and tuition for at-risk and low income students to attend PALS; a 10-day leadership conference for students who commit to being upstanders instead of bystanders when it comes to bullying and harassment. Whether students are looking to expand their leadership and social skills, learn peer mediation, enhance their public speaking and job interviewing ability, learn to write an impactful resume or to simply develop conflict resolution skills, PALS is here to help students obtain all of those skills in a safe space among a diverse group of their peers. More importantly, all students will practice showing empathy, tolerance, and respect for others.

WHO: The crowd holds their breath, time is suspended in the moment and then it hits you… lights go up and details of your surroundings are fully illuminated for the first time: bronze touches, creamy tropical palettes, rich velvet accents, beautiful people in extravagant fabrics, clinking champagne glasses, and sparkling crystal chandeliers. Lights, sound, action! From Thursday, May 12 through May 14, Miami’s newly opened, buzz-worthy cabaret, El Tucán, draws the curtains on Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros for a weekend takeover launch.

The Havana-born Gerardo Contino, “El Abogado de la Salsa,” is a Cuban singer and songwriter. This former lead singer of the Cuban mega-group NG La Banda is a party onstage: he loves to improvise, pull the audience into call & response, and provoke fans into hip-shaking abandon. Since moving to New York City, Gerardo started his own band, “Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros,” with Axel Tosca Laugart, Luisito Quintero, and John Benitez. They released their debut album, Somos Latinos, in 2013 to very high critical acclaim. Together the two have toured all over the world, as well as in Gerardo’s new hometown, NYC.

WHAT: Offering a departure from the usually scheduled shows, “Weekend Takeovers” will bring to the stage an exciting, new concert series. El Tucan hopes to enlighten Miami by providing access to unique Latin American talent. Once a month, the weekend takeover will also bring great Cuban bands from New York to perform an exclusive 3 day residency.

Performing Thursday, May 12 through May 14, Gerardo Contino y Los Habaneros will be the second installment of the weekend takeover. Global Arts Project’s free ArtScape Concert Series presents Chardavoine’s Creole Jazz Project May 15 in Collins Park, Miami Beach from 2-5 PM, in celebration of Haitian Flag Day. Dr Ed Calle’s Student Jazz Ensemble will open as part of our Educational Outreach Program, and the Haitian Arts and Culture for Children dance troupe provides added entertainment. A farmer’s market provided by the Market Company rounds out the day with delicious food and refreshments.

Haitian-born but Brooklyn-bred, Chardavoine has covered the gambit of musical styles through the waves of his guitar. He is a great musician, a talented artist and a refined professional. He represents the best of modern music and the future of jazz. This amazing guitarist is a concrete manifestation of what is called “Haitian jazz” a new genre emerging in jazz today. He is talented not only as an excellent musician but also as a great creative and seasoned arranger. His music has been described as “Funky jazz that is played with soul; it’s lyrical, it’s instrumental, it’s guitar oriented in the style of George Benson, and it’s lyrical in the style of Stevie Wonder.”

As May is Military Appreciation Month, Combat Hippies will perform “Conscience Under Fire”, an original Spoken Word Theater piece that ranges from powerful to humorous and features solos and group work. The group shares their military and Veteran experiences to raise awareness of veteran’s issues and promote Post-Traumatic Growth.

Led by world renowned theater artist and director Teo Castellanos and backed by one of Miami’s most well-known DJ’s, Brimstone 127, The Combat Hippies are a group of military veteran performing artists. The group’s core members consist of Hipolito “Beardman” Arriaga, Anthony “I.E.D.” Torres, Allen “Tatsel” Minor, and Andrew “Dru Phoenix” Cuthbert.

The Combat Hippies were born as a result of the MDC Live Arts’ season-long veterans’ initiative in which they shared their experiences in an original spoken word piece as part of the O, Miami Poetry Festival. The piece, featuring solo and group work, and was debuted under the title “Conscience Under Fire”.

Conscience Under Fire made its theatrical debut on September 11th and 12th at the Prometeo Theater under the banner of Miami’s DWNTWN Art Days.

The MCB School Ensemble Performances on May 6-7 highlight the most advanced-level students in

the School, many of whom will be graduating and starting their professional careers in dance. The

program will feature a variety of classical and contemporary works, including George Balanchine’s

Valse Fantaisie, the third act of La Bayadère, excerpts from Giselle and original works by MCB School

faculty members Gerard Ebitz and Maribel Modrono.

The performance on Saturday, May 7 will be a Spring Benefit with proceeds directly benefiting MCB

School, MCB School Ensemble and individual scholarships. Premium tickets will include premier

In the theatre, a stage comes to life when the actors begin to perform. So it is with Lina Bo Bardi’s architecture. Her buildings are vibrant when inhabited: they come to life with the energy, diversity and creativity of people.

Lina Bo Bardi: Together pays tribute to Lina’s capacity to engage with every facet of culture and to see the potential in all manner of people. Artist Madelon Vriesendorp has conducted workshops at Solar do Unhão and combined objects made there with others of her own and artefacts by Brazilian craftspeople. Tapio Snellman’s film installation explores the life generated by SESC Pompéia within São Paulo and draws parallels with the city of Salvador. Combined, these two works do not merely recreate Lina’s methods or represent her work, but instead allow a more direct experience through a form of re-enactment.

Assemble designed and built a flexible enclosure, a set of display furniture and a technical system. The exhibition furniture designed by Assemble can adapt to a range of gallery situations and presents the diverse content within one space, without hierarchy. The furniture was cast using snowcrete with vermiculite aggregate, which was then hand-hammered to make a rough, gold flecked surface. The material palette and construction methodology learn directly from Lina Bo Bardi’s approach to making buildings, and the display of exhibition contents, without hierarchy, follows many of Lina’s own curatorial practices.

The exhibition is curated by Noemí Blager and presented by Arper. Major support to MCAD is provided by the Miami Design District and TWENTY TWO GROUP. Additional support is provided by Luminaire.
