Superbowl Watching party at Fontainebleau 2/1/09
Your team’s playbook is complex enough, so let us simplify your game plan: head to the Fontainebleau. Ramp up your HD experience with the big screen at LIV and a $25 buffet with beer specials. Or, simmer at a poolside cabana while rooting for the Cardinals with nacho platters and Coronas. Both strategies are tempting… it’s your gameday decision.

Dave Seaman and Dennis Ferrer come to SHINE @ The Shelborne Friday Jan 30, 2009.
Dave who has a residency at Shine returns with some new singles and with a his Gobbledygook part 3 & 4 that can be heard on his myspace.com site. Playing with Nick Warren at WMC09 in March, Dave explains “A new Dave Seaman single is finished and ready to roll. It’s a double header with the lead track being ‘Attack Of The Abalones’ and the other entitled ‘Wrong Side Business’ and I’ll be road testing them over the coming weeks so keep your ears peeled. Also, I’m pleased to announce that I’m planning to release two mix CDs this year with the first being the second installment of This Is Audio Therapy and the other being another collaboration with my long time friends and colleagues at Renaissance”
This double bill, has New Jersey master, Dennis Ferrer, who is known for his mixes of Dido which you can enjoy on his myspace site, but his “Soul Tech” sound precedes him. If you haven’t experienced him in the past do not miss this party…. Defected “in the house” album in 07 and continuous touring, brings the NJ boy back to Miami and Shine. His forward thinking approach to production, and melting of sounds from the past and present, makes this a perfect and Special team for the night. Both Dave and Dennis are Strong in their fields, and if your sick of the same thing all night long you wont find this here. This mixed bag of Music is not to be missed by locals and tourists alike, all bets are off this is sure to be a fun night. Drink Specials, and new floors, leather walls, tweaked sound by Steve Dash, Shine is ready to rock the beach with a series of special events for 2009.

The NYC-based Cuban guitarist and composer will release a new masterpiece of musical magical realism, Johnny’s Dream Club. Named for a legendary Havana jazz cabaret of the 1950s, home of the filin movement, it represents a place outside of time — the vortex of the tumultuous force field between New Orleans and Havana, where the parallel lines of Cuban music and American jazz converge.

Say goodbye to “W†At the official FLORIDA Premiere screening of Crawford 1/19/09
19 MON 8:30pm:
Say goodbye to “W†At the official FLORIDA Premiere screening of Crawford
A new documentary being screened in every state of the union. “Small Town Values†big time politics’ winning slogan. But does the political machine, so desirous of this wholesome image, actually value the small town itself?

In 1999, then Governor George W. Bush bought a ranch in the one-stoplight town of Crawford, Texas, calling it “home†just in time to set his sights on the White House. Having invented Bush’s “folksy image,†the campaign’s victory thrusts Crawford onto the world stage and an insular community of barely 700 explodes overnight. While the high school band plays the inauguration and the Baptist pastor declares a miracle, Crawfordites sell souvenirs hand over fist, finding themselves nearly trampled under the heels of the international press corps, patriotic tourists and boomtown opportunists. Then, four and a half years into Bush’s tenure, Cindy Sheehan and her peace movement arrive at the doorstep of the “Western White House.†Crawford takes center stage. Left to deal with the aftermath, the real people of Crawford are changed forever. Now comes CRAWFORD, an often funny, deeply human story told by unforgettable characters. As witness to one man’s (and his spin doctor’s) decision to intertwine his life with the real small town America, the film ultimately becomes a microcosm of a nation in flux — a unique and poignant reflection on the Bush era.
MBC Members FREE (otherwise, $5 for this special screening).
Your ticket is also a chance to win a set of “W†shot glasses, to toast his return to his now very different “home townâ€!

In Spanish with English subtitles.

A Solo Evening with a Blues Great
John Hammond has been mining the vein of American Blues for most of his 40-year career. Hammond is an authentic voice, part of the great legacy of American musical invention. A Grammy Award winner and nominated for four others, his most recent CD, Push Comes to Shove, is a reinvention of himself. Hammond has played with musical greats and friends including Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Duane Allman, Michael Bloomfield, J.J. Cale, Tom Waits and The Band. Tonight he performs a solo acoustic set that ranges from raw and dirty to the emotionally powerful.

Presented by American Airlines
Info: www.lincolnroadmiamibeach.org
In celebration of the new daily flights connecting Miami to Salvador, Recife and also Belo Horizonte, three major Brazilian cities, American Airlines is proud to present a free music celebration on Lincoln Road for all to enjoy. The public is invited to enter a raffle for a free trip to Brazil!
Winner of a Brazilian Press Award for Best Authentic Brazilian Instrumental Music Ensemble in the United States, Clube do Choro de Miami is comprised of Brazilian musicians living in South Florida: Danuzio Lima on flute, Ivo de Carvalho on 7-string guitar, Bill Duba on cavaquinho, Victor Souto on mandolin and Claudio Silva on pandeiro. Clube do Choro will present 3 free concerts at the Euclid Oval on Lincoln Road. Concerts will take place on Wednesday evenings January 14th, 28th and February 14th starting at 8:00PM.
In the maze of music in Miami, one type, said to be decades older than Jazz, is carving a niche among music lovers from all backgrounds. The name is Choro (pronounced ‘sho-row’),which literally means “I cryâ€, and one listen to this Brazilian import and you can see why it has been described as the perfect marriage of European and African music. Quite simply, Choro is to Bossa Nova what Ragtime is to Bebop. Before there was Samba and Bossa Nova the working class developed Choro, the first truly Brazilian form of music.
Choro was born in Rio de Janeiro the mid-nineteenth century and was first regarded as Brazil’s version of classical dance music like the waltz and the tango. Choro music really in took shape in the 1920’s when master flute improviser Pixinguinha, who’d go on to become one of the genre’s most prolific composers, incorporated Afro-Brazilian percussionists into his performances.
“Choro is perhaps best described as instrumental music drenched with African influences and important features in interpretation, improvisation and virtuosity,” says Danuzio Lima, cofounder of Clube do Choro de Miami.
“Between waves of other rhythms which appeared from time to time, especially from abroad, Choro has endured and has captivated the attention of younger generations in Brazil,” according to Lima. “People are enchanted by its beauty and excellence, and it’s just as easy to listen to as it is to dance to.”
Choro groups usually consist of acoustic instruments including, flute; madolin or clarinet (as soloists); seven-string guitar; six-string guitar; cavaco (four-strings); and percussion.
Clube do Choro de Miami is founded by musicians living in the Miami area. These musicians are just as dedicated to introducing the music form to new audiences as they are to keeping it alive for the many Brazilians who call Miami home.
“Our goal is really two-fold,” says Bill Duba, “we want to create ‘roda de choro’ where local musicians can get together to play choros on a regular basis and to offer lovers of this genre music a chance to reminisce about Brazil.”

The Short Films of Richard Kern 1/21/09
21 WED 8:30pm: “Cine-Kinkâ€
A new series for mature audiences (only).
The Short Films of Richard Kern

MBC’s “Cine-Kink†night, a new semi-monthly tribute to the artistic side of kinky subjects, opens with a compilation of short films by the bad boy of underground film: Richard Kern. Mr. Kern, a photographer, filmmaker, and general mood enhancer, depending on your mood to be enhanced, became famous in the Ronald Reagan 1980’s for his explicit but artistic visions of S&M, gothic romps, and related rough around the edges topics. His films are occupied by characters such as Lung Leg and Lydia Lunch, the prolific recording and spoken word artist, who he made an acting legend of the NYC underground scene with this collection of short films starring her. Warning: these are experimental, alternative, explicit creations, and not for sissies. Coming soon: Kinky classics, with surprise shorts! You must be 18 or older to be admitted.

Stranded:
I’ve Come From a Plane That Crashed on the Mountains
(Gonzalo Arijón/Documentary/France/Uraguay/2008)

http://www.zeitgeistfilms.com/stranded/
It is one of the most astonishing and inspiring survival tales of all time. On October 13, 1972, a young rugby team from Montevideo, Uruguay, boarded a plane for a match in Chile—and then vanished into thin air. Two days before Christmas, 16 of the 45 passengers miraculously resurfaced. They had managed to survive for 72 days after their plane crashed on a remote Andean glacier. Visually breathtaking and crafted with riveting detail by documentary filmmaker (and childhood friend of the survivors) Gonzalo Arijón with a masterful combination of on-location interviews, archival footage and reenactments, Stranded is by turns hauntingly powerful and spiritually moving. Art Deco in Shanghai and Miami Beach
a book reading & signing, photo presentation
by Miami Beach authors Don and Nina Worth
Thursday, January 15
6PM to 8PM
Free and open to the public
Art Deco in Shanghai and Miami Beach was published as a coffee table book by Don and Nina Worth as the culmination of a cultural exchange program between the two cities. It began in 2005 when the authors visited Shanghai and met by chance with acclaimed architect Xing Tong He of China.
The limited edition book features 100 color photographs, 50 of each city, taken by noted photographer Deke Erh, who grew up amongst the art deco buildings of Shanghai. Introductory texts were written by Tess Johnston of Shanghai and Clotilde Luce of Miami Beach. In pictorial form, the book reveals two disparate cities with surprising architectural similarities. Shanghai has the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in Asia.
The Miami Beach Author Series presents monthly book readings, discussion and author signing of recently published and classic books focusing on Miami Beach history and lifestyle.

Film Retrospective coinciding with the
Russian Dreams Exhibition at the Bass Museum of Art
Aleksandra (ÐлекÑандра) (Russia/2007)
With Galina Vishnevskaya, Vasily Shevtsov, Raisa Gichaeva

Starring Russia’s opera legend Vasila Vishnevskya in a monumental performance, Sokorov’s Aleksandra is a simple story of a down-to-earth grandmother’s visit to her grandson’s military camp during the war of Chechnaya (but it is barely recognizable as such, so could be a war anywhere). But it is also a story of the ugliness of war, without ever actually depicting battle scenes, and the totality of the war experience and loss of basic humanity, as told through the intimacy of a grandmother and grandson’s relationship. In Russian with English subtitles.

The Brilliant Light of Carlos REYGADAS
Japón
(Mexico/2002)
With Magdalena Flores, Alejandro Ferretis
In his debut filmmaking effort, Carlos Reygades burst upon the international festival circuit as the new master of moving images in Mexico. A man leaves Mexico City for the remote countryside to prepare his own death. In the heart of an immense canyon he finds lodging with an old widow in her humble home. He then confronts the power of nature and the woman’s infinite humanity. With a style reminiscent of Andrei Tarkovsky – Reygadas seminal cinematic inspiration – Japón’s design evokes the physical and emotional ties between the characters, nature and the landscape. Harvard Beats Yale 29-29
(Kevin Rafferty/2008)
With Tommy Lee Jones, Brian Dowling, Frank Champi, Meryl Streep

HARVARD STADIUM, NOVEMBER 23, 1968: for the first time since 1909, the football teams of Harvard and Yale are undefeated as they meet for their final game. Yale is heavily favored, with Brian Dowling, its captain and quarterback, satirized in classmate Garry Trudeau’s Doonesbury strip. Harvard’s lineman is Tommy Lee Jones —Al Gore’s roommate. Kevin Rafferty (ATOMIC CAFÉ) intercuts original footage with the hilarious, suspenseful recollections of the 50 men who played in what has become one of college football’s most famous games.
“The best football game I ever saw. . . for pure narrative beauty, culminating in the athletic equivalent of a MULTIPLE ORGASM, it wasn’t just the best game I ever saw – it was THE BEST GAME THAT EVER WAS. . . Now you, too, can experience the magic.â€â€“ Hendrik Hertzberg, The New Yorker online
“PREPOSTEROUSLY ENTERTAINING. . . A narrative that pulses with the artful, exciting beats of a thriller.†–Manohla Dargis, New York Times
“The best football movie I’ve ever seen!â€â€“ J. Hoberman, The Village Voice

Russian Passion Concert at Bass Museum 2/1/09
FEBRUARY 1, 2009 – 3:00PM
CONCERT: Russian Passion
A tribute to Russia’s long history of classical music innovation, this program will transport the audience from the early romantic era at the beginning of the 19th century (Glinka, Balakirev), through the late Romantic era (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff) to the great modernists of the early 20th century (Scriabin, Stravinsky, Prokofiev).
Russia’s proud tradition produced one of the most prominent composers in the world, Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, one of the greatest pianists in history, Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff, one of the most innovative and most controversial of composers, Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin, the most influential composer of 20th century music, Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky, and one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev.
Back by popular demand, Russian-born pianist Damira Feldman will captivate the audience with a lively and insightful performance of works by the great Russian composers.

Hansel and Gretel A Modern Opera in Three Acts
Performance at: Glyndebourne Festival, England. July 2008
Approximate running time: 135’, Music: Englebert Humperdinck, Libretto: Adelheid Wette, Conductor: Kazushi Ono, Directed: Laurent Pelly, Sets: Barbara de Limburg, Costumes: Laurent Pelly Cast: Jennifer Holloway mezzo-soprano Hänsel, Adriana KuÄherová soprano Gretel

About HÄNSEL UND GRETEL
With this modern version of the classic fairy tale, Glyndebourne is presenting Englebert Humperdinck’s (1854-1921) Hänsel und Gretel for the first time in the 2008 Festival. The work has been a constant and extraordinary success since its premiere in 1893. Like all great fairy tales, the story has darker underpinnings, evident in Humperdinck’s brilliant orchestral writing which accompanies the lost siblings’ journey through a shadowy world of unknown and limitless menace.
“LIVELY, CONFIDENDENT, COLURFUL!â€â€“Financial Times
“Adriana Kucerova’s irrepressibly hyperactive Gretel steals every scene. I don’t think I’ve seen an opera singer expend so much energy on stage. It’s as if she is connected directly to the national grid.†– Richard Morrison, Times Online

Our sincere apologies to the opera purists… Two professional opera singers decided that the world needed a good fat laugh! Big egos, along with big wigs, gorgeous voices, and ridiculous characters…audiences from college kids to older opera buffs adore this show and schtick. From the hallowed stage of Carnegie Hall, these hilarious ladies will tickle your funny bone as they combine “serious” operatic music with completely slapstick humor.
And remember, “it ain’t over till…” Well, you know.
“WHO KNEW OPERA COULD BE SO MUCH FUN?” Howard Cohen, Miami Herald July 11, 2008 “The Sopranos was never quite like this: “Baroness Vladka von Loudenstimme has had a long career on the opera stage but for how much longer is anyone’s guess. She’s still got the pipes but she likes to soak them in booze whenever she can — as in during every performance. So she hires the younger Southern belle Gwendoline Josephine Bellevoix Bouvier, who fancies herself French and cultured but who grew up in Boar Tush, La., to sing for the audience so she can sprint off stage for a nip. “One pianist named Paige Turner, 18 costumes, a horned helmet, spear, light saber and a lotta Puccini later, the diva duet becomes a duel. The aim is laughter. That’s the premise of Duelling Divas, a comedic entree into the world of grand opera.”
“A SMASH HIT!” WPBF-TV News 25 “An inspired stand-out in operatic theatre.” Ocala Magazine “See how high art and high camp combine!” Miami New Times

Director Michael Bay United Way Event 12/27/08
Happy Holidays from Michail Capponi:
From the bottom of my heart I wanted to wish all of you very happy holidays.
As most of you will recall, last year around the holidays, we launched an annual event called “A Toast to United Way” to raise much needed funds for our community. Last year’s inaugural event festivities extended over four-days, with celebrations at more than a dozen elite venues on South Beach including Cameo, China Grill, Florida Room, The Forge, Glass, Mansion, Mokai, Mynt, Opium Garden, Prive, Rokbar, Sagamore Hotel, SET, Snatch and Suite.
I am once again chairing this event for United Way. This year, film director Michael Bay was gracious enough to open up his beautiful home, the former Hogan estate renovated by Capponi Group, for our 2nd Annual “A Toast to United Way”. The director of such blockbusters as Transformers, Pearl Harbor, and Bad Boys, Bay is serving as the host for the evening.
The invitation-only event will be held at 8 pm, on Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Bay’s Miami Beach home. Tickets are $250 per person. VIP tickets, which will allow guests to join Bay and his celebrity guests on a private rooftop lounge, are available for $500 per person. Fine cuisine is graciously catered by The Forge and top shelf drinks generously provided by Diageo. Following the reception, all guests will be invited to an after-party. Proceeds go to support the work of United
Way of Miami-Dade.
As the event chair I am urging you all to come support the United Way and its great causes to help fund over 70 different charities in our Miami-Dade county areas.
Please call Maria Zuniga at 305 646 7020 or email to zuniga@unitedwaymiami.org for tickets.
Thank you, I’m looking forward to see you on the 27th.

Father and Son (Otets i syn/ Îòåö è ñûÃ) (Ru ssia/2003)
With Andrei Shchetinin and Aleksei Nejmyshev
Father and Son won the FIPRESCI prize at the Cannes Film Festival with the following note from the critics who gave the award: “For brilliant images and the director’s original way of depicting the powerful bond that unites a father and a son.” The film is part of a trilogy begun with Mother and Son, and will end with the planned Two Brothers and a Sister. With one of the most poetic films ever made, Sokorov shows that intensity of emotions and imagery associated with human intimacy does not need to be associated with sexuality (which some critics read into the film’s premise, incorrectly, according to the director himself).
WINNER: Cannes Film Festival FIPRESCI Prize Russian Guild of Film Critics Golden Aries for Art Direction.
“ACHINGLY BEAUTIFUL… dreamily seductive and profoundly disturbing”–BBC
“LIKE A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM. Its images and emotions are vivid, disquieting and also hermetic, and while it may frustrate your desire for clear storytelling and psychological transparency, it has an intensity that surpasses understanding.” -New York Times

Shakespeare’s MACBETH
Produced by Shakespeare Miami

All performances are free no tickets required
Friday, January 9, Opening Night, 7:00pm performance
Saturday, January 10, 7:00 pm Performance
Sunday, Â January 11, 7:00 pm Performance
Do… Bring a blanket or low beach chairs. There is no “seating” at Shakespeare in the Park. An extra blanket comes in handy because sometimes it gets a little nippy.
Do… Bring a picnic. Â Pick up a dinner ‘to go’ from a local Restaurant or have your neighborhood market make up a gourmet picnic for you!
Do… Bring the family. Â Our shows are perfect for kids 8 and up. This production is a little more for older children. Â There is realistic violence in this play including Swordfights, verbal abuse and of course, Macbeth loses his head in the end. There is a lot of blood and there are scary witches, too, so it is not a good show for toddlers.
Do… Bring some cash or a check to throw in the donation basket! All funds go to our education programs
Don’t … Bring tall chairs unless you plan to sit towards the back of the field.
Don’t …Bring Dogs. Â With picnics and people sitting on the ground, dogs tend to annoy other patrons in the park.
Don’t… Go back stage to visit friends or family members No one is permitted backstage without a staff ID.
Do… Find an usher to send flowers or notes back stage, the actors appreciate it.

French musical masters and their international inspirations and fantasies take center stage under the graceful baton of guest conductor Robert Spano. Take a traditional look at Italy through the eyes of Berlioz in his non-traditional concerto for viola, Harold in Italy. Dance to the sultry rhythms of Spain with Debussy in Iberia. Dutilleux’s The Shadows of Time quotes from The Diary of Anne Frank with a children’s choir as it questions if time can possibly forgive the evils of the world.

After you hear Brahms’ Horn Trio at the Musicians’ Forum on the 15th, you will surely want to join us for this concert as we welcome Jennifer Montone, Principal Horn of the Philadelphia Orhcestra. Ms. Montone will perform Ligeti’s Horn Trio, whose combination of instruments was directly inspired by Brahms’ own Trio. Mozart’s Horn Quintet and Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 round out this vibrant chamber program.
Did you know? Mozart wrote his horn works for his friend Joseph Leutgeb and in his original score manuscripts wrote snide notes (in jest) to Leutgeb, such as “take it easy, animal” and “finished? thank heaven!”

Catch the contagious enthusiasm of our Fellows as they present the music they love. Cello Fellow Soo Jee Yang — who recently won a position in the Kansas City Symphony — will play a Suite for Cello by Cassado accompanied by a multi-media performance by Bass Fellow, Jory Herman. Percussion Fellow
Sergio Carreno and soprano Rebekah Diaz will perform seven Spanish songs. Then three Fellows will breathe life into Brahms’ impassioned Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano, which serves as a tribute to Brahms’ mother. It is emotional music at its best.
