In front of 90,000 people 31 teams got their chance to fly their outrageous flying machines.  All of the entries were awesome and some were very creative.  Can’t wait for next time…..GO RED BULL!!!

MCM will be closed to the public to avoid large crowds and will provide modified lighting, sound adjustments and “cool down” rooms for children to relax in. Special programming includes yoga, art, music therapy, and more. Upcoming Dates: Saturday, November 10th, December 15th, January 12th, February 9th and March 9th. As the eyes of the art world descend upon Miami just days before Art Basel 2012, a special art opening and wine tasting event will take place at Wine by the Bay in Downtown Miami. “Transitions†examines the connections between organic and construction through the works of three artists: Miami-based, Japanese-Argentinian artist Valeria Yamamoto; Colombian sculptor Claudia Hakim; and Iraqi-German painter Fahar. A similar connection can be derived from the terroir of the California landscape where wines reflect the personality of the state while drawing inspiration from afar.
The evening is the ideal opportunity for connoisseurs of both wine and art to converge and interact. Discover the complexities of some of California’s best wines through the expert guidance of Wine by the Bay owner/gallerist Stefano Campanini and his knowledgeable staff. Special guests, Mara Sartore and Matteo Bartoli co-founders and editors of My Art Guides will enlighten guests about the art presented and their experiences working at the most notable art fairs in the world: Venice Biennale, Art Basel Switzerland, Art Basel Miami Beach, and organizing international events such as The Dali Universe, Edge of Arabia, and Circuito Off (Italy’s most important video festival.)

Downtown Brickell which is no stranger to fine dining establishments and now is about to get a culinary boost Peruvian style as the world renowned Mi Propiedad Privada (A.K.A. MPP) madesits way from Lima to the Magic City in the NEO Vertika Building. MPP celebrated their grand opening of the restaurant that has been awarded accolades for years in Peru. The red carpet event featured a ribbon cutting ceremony with an array of celebrities.
Chef Jose “Coco†Mendoza who is the owner and head chef of MPP in Lima, Peru considers himself a chef who specializes in expressing the sights, sounds, and tastes of Peru through his cuisine. The slogan at MPP Peru is “El sabor de la experiencia†or “The taste of the experienceâ€. MPP’s cuisine is inspired by the ocean and boasts an amazing array of variety. Ceviche is only the tip of the iceberg at MPP. Chef Mendoza’s MPP over the course of 14 years has won countless awards, among them being included as one of a selected few who can use the official “Peru†logo alongside their brand, obtaining a “Bizz Award†and many others to date. MPP is a celebrated restaurant among locals, tourist, and celebrities.
Being only one of five Peruvian franchises to be able to branch outside the limits of Peru, Jose Mendoza quickly reached out to friend and associate Henry Malpartida (Peruvian born and current Brickell resident) to bring their award winning Peruvian cuisine to South Florida. Brickell seemed to be the obvious choice. Its multicultural population and vibrant nightlife is a perfect back drop for MPP’s US unveiling. Mr. Malpartida has a wide network that he has built within the business community will tie into this fabulous new venture, complimenting the established credibility with the Mi Propiedad Privada name. Joining in the venture is Hector Malpartida whom also has an extensive network and has been in South Florida for over a decade. He will join his brother in all efforts for MPP Brickell.
MPP prides itself on delicious food and amazing presentation while never losing its Peruvian essence. MPP Brickell plans to keep in line with its award winning ways as Chef Jose Mendoza has finalized the menu for the South Florida opening. A few of his favorites are the Causas Festival, which contains causa a la olive, with prawn, crabmeat causa and passion fruit causa. Another favorite is the Mixed Carpaccio which boasts thinly cut flounder slices, octopus and seashells, bathed in a sauce of lemon juice al natural with garlic. For the person who is simply looking for the classic ceviche he recommends the “Grandmother’s Ceviche†which is a flounder Ceviche using his grandmother’s recipe.
MPP has garnered worldwide accolades on the shores of the beach in Lima, Peru. The Miami team which features talent straight from Peru is looking forward to sharing their award winning recipes with the South Florida public.

The Miami River Art Fair is an international contemporary art fair that will pioneer in the Downtown Miami-Brickell area. The Miami River Art Fair will take place at the Miami Convention Center and will run alongside Art Basel as one of its satellite art fairs. Art Basel week is a one-of-kind time where our city experiences a soaring influx of international art professionals, collectors, curators and enthusiasts that visit Art Basel, the largest contemporary art fair in the world.
There are numerous satellite fairs during Art Basel each offering something unique. The Miami River Art Fair is the first and only one located in the Downtown Miami-Brickell area, the heart of Miami’s financial district. As the only art fair in this untapped area, we will have direct access to our local target market that consists of the affluent, well-traveled inhabitants of the Brickell-Downtown area. The purpose of the event is to collect warm clothing/ food
donations as well as cash donations to feed and clothe our city’s
homeless population during our winter months, when temperatures
unexpectedly dip.
The night will feature live local bands performing cover songs as well
as original music, visual art displays, comedians, a raffle, and
silent art auction.

We are also seeking live painters and body painters.

The 29th edition of the nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, Miami Book Fair International, presented by The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College (MDC), will take place November 11 – 18, 2012. The always-popular Street Fair includes more than 200 exhibitors from around the country selling books in a festive atmosphere.
The Fair, MDC’s flagship cultural event, will treat book lovers to eight days of cultural and educational activities, including the beloved Evenings With… series, the IberoAmerican Authors program, myriad learning activities for children, and programs for food enthusiasts in partnership with the college’s Miami Culinary Institute.
Top Confirmed Authors
The Fair continues to raise the bar of excellence by offering a fine roster of writers from the U.S. and abroad, and this year will be no exception. Confirmed authors include talk show host Bill O’Reilly, actress Molly Ringwald, political commentator Andrew Solomon, historians Robert Caro and Deborah Dash Moore, David Maraniss, Michael Grunwald; Pulitzer Prize winning Junot Diaz; essayists and commentators Adam Gopnik and Camille Paglia; novelists Sandra Cisneros, Emma Donoghue, Jess Walters, Ann Lamott Lauren Groff, Robert Goolrick, Thane Rosenbaum, personality Lemony Snickett; fashion designers Isabel and Ruben Toledo; best selling authors James Patterson, Jo Nesbo, RL Stine, Justin Torres, and opening the Fair on Nov. 11 is novelist and journalist Tom Wolfe, to name just a few of the 300 plus authors coming to Miami from all over the world to read from their newest works, to meet their readers and sign books.
The IberoAmerican program will present an array of Spanish-speaking literary voices from around the world, including Homero Aridjis (Mexico), Mayra Santos Febres (Puerto Rico), Abilio Estévez (Cuba-Spain), Santiago Roncagliolo (Perú) and more.
Back again this year is the fall edition of The Miami Writers Institute, with workshops taught by novelist Margot Livesey, literary agent Kimberly Witherspoon, and award-winning author Teresa Dovalpage with a workshop in Spanish, among others.
This year, the Fair continues to expand its children’s programming with Generation Genius Days, a component for toddlers, children, tweens and teens to explore, discover and learn through reading and writing, storytelling, art-making, music and theater. Age-appropriate, book-inspired activities will be offered, and will include a “musical petting zooâ€, where kids can handle instruments; map-making and star-gazing; junior engineering projects and science experiments; creative writing and theater workshops, computer storyboarding for comics and cartoons, and other activities that can lead to learning and discovery in the various subject areas, such as English, math, history, geography, the sciences, the visual arts and others. An additional day of author readings for students on field trips is now on the schedule, as well as a fourth day of readings, storytelling and entertainment on the two children’s stages.
The Fair also continues special programming for educators with the day-long School of Comics and Graphic Novels — a series of workshops on how to use comics in the classroom–and adds workshops on how to teach creative writing to K-12 students. Miami Book Fair International 2012 promises to be another exceptional literary event!
Miami Book Fair International is the largest and is regarded as the finest literary gathering in America. It is the premier event of The Center for literature and theatre at Miami Dade College. October 22, 2012—Miami Dade College will screen a new documentary film “Up to Us†at the Wolfson
Campus on November 5 at 6 pm.
The 20-minute film, which was shot this summer in New York, Atlanta and at both the Democratic
and Republican Conventions, follows two young Americans — Atlanta native Kyle Murphy, 23, who
served as an AmeriCorps member at Habitat for Humanity, and Brandon West, 27 a Masters in Public
Administration graduate, who is underemployed (for 18 months), but is seeking work in a public service
field.
The film specifically highlights the www.onemillionnewjobs.org campaign as a viable pathway toward
increasing economic mobility, while it makes the case for voting as a means of supporting the measure.
“Up to Us†was produced with support from Own the Vote (www.ownthevote.us) an initiative from
Comcast and NBC Universal that aims to engage and educate young voters about the political process.
Own the Vote has partnered with ElectNext, Rock the Vote and the National Constitution Center to help
create awareness about and encourage voter registration and voter participation.

The Miami Heat’s Mike Miller is excited to announce the launch of Let It Fly Energy. The new brand will offer a natural energy drink, natural energy shot, and promotional merchandise. This will be the official public launch of the company where fans will have the opportunity to purchase official Let It Fly hats, shirts, synch bags, natural energy drinks, and natural energy shots.
In addition, to kick off Let It Fly Energy and celebrate company owner Mike Miller’s championship season with the Miami Heat, L.I.F.E. will be selling promotional merchandise in conjunction with the Heat’s opening home game against the rival Boston Celtics on October 30th. Bayside Marketplace will be sponsoring this special event, held at the main entrance near the flag area from 2 PM until 10 PM. The first 30 visitors to go to the website and purchase the special packet will also get two tickets to the Heat’s opening game (See the 2 for $200 special).
Later next week, Mike will also host a Let It Fly promotion where one lucky winner will win a Championship ring. A portion of the proceeds from both launch events will go to Mike’s Foundation and Miami Heat’s charity.
Once the Heat’s season opener is over, fans will be welcomed to meet Mike Miller at Tradewinds Bar and Grill. "I wanted to do something different. About the DCA Jazz Ensemble
Known as the DCA Jazz Ensemble, the Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble is a performance oriented ensemble composed of talented student musicians selected from Broward County. Under the direction of Christopher Dorsey, the primary goal of the Jazz Program at Dillard Center for the Arts is to introduce students to a wide array of Jazz literature at the highest level, and providing performance opportunities. The band is open to students in grades 9-12. Auditions are held prior to the start of school. The Jazz Ensemble has made public appearances with Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Printup, Vincent Gardner, Marcus Roberts, Rodney Whitaker, Terrell Stafford, Chris Crenshaw, Wycliffe Gordon, Leon Anderson, Rodney Jordan, Melton Mustafa Sr, Lou Donaldson, Negroni’s Trio, Chico Hamilton, and The Clayton Brothers, just to name a few. Orchestra Miami to present the Florida premiere of Kurt Vonnegut’s
“An American Soldier’s Taleâ€
In celebration of iconic American author Kurt Vonnegut’s 90th birthday, Orchestra Miami will present the Florida premiere of “An American Soldier’s Taleâ€, with music by Igor Stravinsky and new libretto by Kurt Vonnegut. Vonnegut’s gripping libretto replaces the traditional story by
C. F. Ramuz with the true story of private Eddie D. Slovick, who in 1945 became the only U.S. soldier to be executed for desertion since the Civil War.
Commissioned in 1993 by New York Philomusica, this edgy and provocative piece was not heard again until 2006, after a legal fight with the Stravinsky estate. Rarely performed since the 2006 New York revival, Orchestra Miami has obtained exclusive rights from the Vonnegut Estate to perform this important work on the occasion of what would have been Mr. Vonnegut’s 90th birthday.
Seven musicians from Orchestra Miami will perform the original Stravinsky score, conducted by Elaine Rinaldi. Directed by renowned Miamian Michael Yawney, the play will feature Ivan Lopez, Kristoff Skalet, Francesca Toledo and Matthew Glass.
The performances will be on Saturday, November 10 at 8:00 at PAX (Performing Arts Exchange), located at 337 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33130 and Sunday, November 11 at 7:00 PM at the Pinecrest Gardens’ Banyan Bowl, located at 11100 SW 57 Avenue, Pinecrest, FL 33156. Tickets to the PAX performance are $25 and tickets to the performance at Pinecrest Gardens are $25 and $30. One of Colombia’s hottest bands, Monsieur Periné, self-described as “experimental laboratory of popular music with an old school spirit,” led by Catalina Garcia to perform at PAX this Friday. Monsieur Periné who has once before graced the stage at PAX, will again share their unique blend of cultural, artistic, and rhythmic fusions of traditional Latin American music, Jazz, and a French adaptation of American swing deserving of its own genre “Suin a la Colombiana”.
The group just finished recording their self-produced debut album titled “Hecho a Mano†(Handmade) that features 12 original songs, including some reworked versions of the group’s YouTube hits. THe album will be available at the concert.
Monsieur Periné will perform live Friday, October 26th at 10pm. The event is sponsored by Heineken and Aguardiente. New Times 5th Annual Iron Fork at Grand Central on Thursday, October 18, 2012.  We got to sample food from over 40 Miami’s restaurants and food trucks and watch as former Top Chef contestant, Chef Kenny Gilbert of Swine Southern Table & Bar battles it out with Chef Daniel Serfer, of Blue Collar for the coveted Iron Fork.  This year Iron Fork was presented by the Miami Downtown Development Authority and also benefited the United Way of Miami-Dade.

The Patron of the Arts Award honored  Dennis Edwards and Mark Steinberg. The Keynote address was by Dennis Scholl of the Knight Foundation. Each of the veterans faces a crisis upon his arrival, and each crisis is a microcosm of the experiences of many American warriors who found an alien world awaiting them when they came marching home. CHOPS is a documentary about a high school jazz ensemble in Jacksonville, Florida that is accepted to compete in the Essentially Ellington Festival at Lincoln Center in New York City against other top-tier high school jazz ensembles. The film interviews individual musicians about their love of their instruments and the music itself, and shows the ensemble as they face the challenges inherent in learning and practicing music as difficult as that composed by Duke Ellington. After the hours of practice, they arrive in New York City and meet Wynton Marsalis, who helped launch (and is one of the judges in) the Essentially Ellington Festival. (Documentary/Music)

Dramatization of “Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy,” by Isaac Bashevis Singer (1902-1991); originally published in Yiddish c. 1960, then in English c. 1983. The story: In an Ashkenazic shtetl in Poland, Yentl Mendel is the boyishly klutzy daughter and only child of long widowed Rebbe (“Talmud Teacher”) Mendel, who teaches Talmud (a codification of Jewish Law) to local boys – and to Yentl, but secretly because girls were not allowed to learn the law in those days. When her father dies, Yentl is all alone in the world. She takes the momentous decision to leave the village and – disguised as a boy and calling herself by the name of her late brother, Anshel – seeks and gets admitted to a Yeshiva, to study the texts, traditions, subtleties and complexities of Torah, Talmud, etc. She befriends Avigdor who is engaged to Haddas, but her family discovers his brother committed suicide so they call off the wedding (in case Avigdor possesses the same madness)… (Drama/Musical/Romance)

Ram, who wants to be a serious composer, finds Paris more exciting than America and is reluctant to give up his music for a relationship, and Eddie wants to stay for the city’s more tolerant racial atmosphere. Accidentally blinded by her prostitute mother Rose-Ann at the age of five, Selena D’Arcy spends the next 13 years confined in the tiny Los Angeles apartment that they share with “Ole Pa”, Selena’s grandfather. One afternoon at the local park, Selena meets Gordon Ralfe, a thoughtful young office worker whose kind-hearted treatment of her results in her falling in love with him, unaware that he is black. They continue to meet in the park every afternoon and he teaches her how to get along in the city. But when the cruel, domineering Rose-Ann learns of their relationship, she forbids her to have anything more to do with him because he is black. Gary Thomas (Bass)
Gary has been performing and recording professionally as a bassist for the past 10 years. After spending his early years as a musician in north Florida, Gary moved to Miami in 2007 in order to study music at the University of Miami. He has recently completed both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree from the University and continues to work professionally as a musician in and around south Florida. Gary has been recognized as a composer in Downbeat Magazine, and has also participated in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead, at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. While living in Miami, Gary has performed alongside artists such as Shelly Berg, Kevin Mahogany, Ira Sullivan, and John Fedchock

While securing an in-demand reputation throughout the country Tim has performed and recorded with many significant jazz artists. Having recently completed a Masters in Jazz Performance at the University of Miami, Tim has continued on the path of creative music, continually strengthening his foundation in the jazz tradition as well as crafting his individual musical expression through composition.
Mark Small (Sax)
Mark Small is a saxophonist/woodwind player/composer who resides in New York City and Miami. After studying in his home state of Connecticut and attending the New England Conservatory in Boston, he moved to NYC where he quickly began working in numerous facets of the New York’s diverse music scene. While in NYC, Mark performs with his own band and as a sideman for bands such as the Village Vanguard Orchestra and Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society (which he is featured on the Grammy nominated debut record) among other bands at such notable clubs as the Blue Note, 55 bar,Village Vanguard, Fat Cat, and the Jazz Gallery.
Angelo Versace (Keyboards)
Recently the winner of the 2012 Phillips Jazz Piano competition, Angelo Versace is an experienced pianist who plays professionally in jazz, gospel, funk, and R&B groups. In 2003, Versace played at the New Orleans Jazz Festival at the Invitation of Ellis Marsalis. Later that same year, Versace was chosen to play in the North Sea Jazz Festival with his jazz trio. In 2005, Versace became a member of the Dwayne Dolphin Piccolo Bass Band and has recorded two albums with the group to date, “Ming†and “Pretty Girlâ€. In 2007, Versace recorded a classical album with Alto Saxophonist Keith Young Called “Saxophone Voices from Five Countriesâ€. In 2008, he recorded another album, “Hahn Hymns,†with platinum selling jazz guitarist, Jerry Hahn. Versace is currently awaiting the release of his latest recording with trumpeter Augie Haas, “ENDless†as well as a new project with Take 6 vocalist, Khristian Dentley.

LUIS BOFILL cuban singer born in La Habana, Cuba. After graduating from the Conservatorio de Canto and the Universidad de La Habana, he launched his career in the late 70’s during the Mov. de la Nueva Trova as a member of the “Cuba Nueva” a group that played traditional Cuban music. In 1981 he won a prestigious award as a solo artist in “Todo el mundo canta” a national TV program that lead him to give performances in theatres, clubs, TV programs and tour the country. November Contemporary is the 6th event of a series that features painting, sculpture, installation, photography, performances, collage and video of international artists.
Nina Torres Fine Art has established the first waterfront gallery in the heart of Downtown Miami, in what it promises to be Miami’s true cultural destination: the Miami Arts & Entertainment District.
The brand new 8,000 square feet gallery space across the street of Margaret Pace Park is located at 1800 North Bayshore Drive, in a high-rise building adorned with fountains and with breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach and the Port of Miami.
About her invitation to join at the group show November Contemporary the young artist is very happy. But what is it that makes her work so different? Carmen Graber replies: “My acrylic paintings are often formed by photographs I find in magazines, books and other visual media. The focus of my interest lies on composition and the protagonists’ pose in the images, as well as the openness in interpreting their actions. A special meaning lies in the gesture that indicates cultural, social or political discrepancies. In my work, the motive of the child is a symbol not only for what is in the present but also always for what will be in the future and therefore stands for duration. Although the motifs are taken from reality, I have taken them from their context. The result is equivalent to my inner point of view. You can see it in my works Comprehension, Summerday, Amor and Girl with Cat.â€
Carmen Graber, born 1979 in Landau/ Germany, is constantly on the search for contradictions, inconsistencies or alienations. In her latest series Carmen Graber expands her art to the integration of ad-hoc photos that show spontaneously taking scenes of the day-to-day live. The figures seem to act as on stage. She succeeds in reflecting the discomfort and depression of modern society in simple gestures, posture and directness of the people on display with their dreamy facial expression.
The recent exhibition at Nina Torres Fine Art Miami offers an opportunity in-depth reflection upon Carmen Graber`s individual works – to be visited from November 2 to November 24, 2012.

MIAMI, FL (October 1, 2012) – At the forefront for the 2012-2013 season open of the Miami City Ballet, Haute Couture Designer Ozcar G., Fine Art Photographer Yobe and Painter Leonor Anthony fused arts to create a fundraiser towards the Shoe Fund of the Miami City Ballet via Project Pointe. This collaborative effort between fashion designer, fine art photographer, and painter produced a final outcome to be exhibited and auctioned during the opening night. Project Pointe was imagined by Jennifer Carlynn Kronenberg, in order to raise funds towards the costly toe shoes worn by ballerinas, pointe shoes last for one performance only, and the Miami City Ballet dancers go through more than 3,000 pairs per season with an average cost of $70 per pair. A one-night-only event is planned for Friday, October 19, 2012 in the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts – Peacock Rehearsal Room as part of the Artist’s Circle VIP Reception. The auction will be open to the general audience attending the performance that night. Participants of the auction will be invited to the Artist’s Circle Dessert Reception post production, where the winners will be announced.
The exhibit will feature a one-of-a-kind gown by designer Ozcar G. worn by principal dancer Jennifer Carlynn Kronenberg, which will be auctioned that night. Alongside the dress there will be five one-of-a-kind pointe shoes beautifully embellished by designer Ozcar G.— these toe shoes have been previously worn by the principal dancers for the 2012-2013 season (Tricia Albertson, Mary Carmen Catoya, Jeanette Delgado, and Patricia Delgado). “Every gown I make has a story and this particular one is very dear to me and I want the Miami City Ballet and one very lucky lady to take it home and at the same time benefit this magnificent cause” said Ozcar G. when presenting this gown for the auction.
As an integral part of the auction, Yobe, the photographer, contributed five photographic master pieces and these pieces will be on exhibit during the reception prior to program one, during the intermissions and post production. The photographs showcase the five principal dancers wearing five unique gowns by Ozcar G. and which are face mounted using a contemporary and unique way onto acrylic. These fine art photographs also transpired into a limited edition Poster designed by Yobe, which will be exhibited and presented to the patrons of the Miami City Ballet whom offer donations above $100 towards Project Pointe. “Each of the ballerinas gave their very best to Project Pointe and the collaborative effort created a synergy which in turn became this amazing work of art and ultimately will benefit the Miami City Ballet.” expressed photographer Yobe.
In addition to the other auction items,Expressionist artist Leonor Anthony has contributed an original oil on canvas masterpiece executed in her signature style and created specifically for the Miami City Ballet.This painting depicts ballerina pointe shoes painted on a large format ( 36†X 48â€) and aptly named “In Her Shoesâ€. Leonor explains what inspired her: “I chose to paint this particular image because the shoes are the vehicle that enables the dancer to show us their craft. I wanted to express the wear and tear on the feet, as well as the shoes.For me, this painting represents a love of beauty, a love of dance.†Leonor’s piece contributes greatly towards the ultimate goal of Project Pointe. This exhibit moves seamlessly between haute couture, paintings and fine art photography. All of the pieces explore rich textures and vibrant colors.
This entire body of work is heavily influenced by the classical rhythms and imagery of the Ballet, executed by masters of their trade with one single purpose in mind: to support the Miami City Ballet and their Shoe Fund. The executive lecture, delivered by world-renowned Professor Patrick McNutt, will give attendees the opportunity to learn about the application of game embedded theory in international business. In the business world, long term strategy is continually changing but if you know what to look for, patterns can be observed. In this Master class, Professor McNutt uses real time case studies to explain why business strategists should look more closely for patterns in order to isolate a competitor’s strategy set from an evolving string of actions and reactions in the market-as-a-game. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with seasoned executives from the Miami area, in addition to learning from one of Europe’s foremost thinkers in game theory.

The fifth annual Downtown Miami Riverwalk Festival and Boat Parade will this year, feature a Jamaican Folk Festival in celebration of the Nation’s golden jubilee anniversary of Independence. The event takes place on Saturday, November 10th, at the Riverwalk of the historic Miami River on Brickell Avenue in Downtown Miami, starting at 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Organized by the Urban Tour Host, the event, this year will feature a Jamaica Folk Festival and will to feature a wide range of entertainment including traditional folk performances and cultural activities showcasing the best of what Jamaica has to offer. Urban Tour Host hosts the annual event which showcases and promotes the multicultural communities of South Florida. In previous years, the countries of Bahamas and Haiti were among those nations featured in the downtown Festival.
Food lovers will get an opportunity to taste varieties of authentic Jamaican cuisine from local restaurants and catering houses. The exotic tastes of the island continue to be in high demand whetting the appetites of the growing South Florida community. Additionally, art enthusiasts will enjoy displays of art and crafts by local artisans. There will be fun and activities designed for the children, and a Boat Parade on the adjacent Miami River will also be part of the celebrations honoring the Nation’s Independence.
This event has been endorsed by the Consulate General of Jamaica and the Jamaica Tourist Board as Jamaicans across the Diaspora continue their celebration of the Nation’s 50th anniversary of Independence. Proceeds from the event will benefit a local Jamaican youth organization.
The cities of Miami and Kingston have long shared a lasting relationship as twinned cities under the Miami Dade Sister Cities Program since 1981.
Admission to the Festival is free and will give visitors and the nearly 1,000 local residents in the Downtown and surrounding Brickell area an opportunity to explore and interact among the pageantry celebrating the island’s rich heritage and culture as well as excite the interest of new audiences.
Jamaica gained its Independence from Britain on August 6, 1962. The history of the Jamaican community in Florida spans over four decades. The community numbers approximately 500,000 nationals residing in Florida State with large populations in tri-county South Florida, Central Florida and the Tampa Bay areas.
South Florida is considered the fastest growing region of Jamaicans compared to any in the Diaspora. In addition, Jamaicans make up the largest foreign-born group in Broward County, one of the fastest growing counties in the USA.

2013 South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship Workshop for Miami-Dade Artists
The South Florida Cultural Consortium is a partnership among the local arts agencies of Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties. The Consortium’s Fellowship program is intended to nurture the artistic development of eligible visual and media artists who reside in one of these counties. Fellowships are not project-based; recipients may use the Fellowships according to their individual needs.
The South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship Program offers the largest regional, government-sponsored artists’ grants in the United States, awarding $15,000 and $7,500 fellowships to resident visual and media artists from the counties of Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach. Since it was established in 1988, the Consortium has awarded close to $2 million in fellowships to over 200 artists.

The all-new Cadillac ATS compact luxury sedan will be depicted in a multi-dimensional chalk mural at Miami’s Bayfront Park from Sept. 18-22 by American street artist Tracy Lee Stum. Known as one of the top 3D painters in the world, Stum will illustrate a scene of the ATS in Monaco, where it took on the world-famous Grand Prix circuit’s tight corners and elevation changes with its 2.0T engine and light-weight body structure.
The massive 15-feet-by-30-feet murals will give each scene a 3D effect when viewed at certain angles. Stum will also incorporate the use of “augmented reality†painting, a technique that gives two-dimensional designs the illusion of being real objects when viewed through a camera lens.

Teen Miami, on view September 23, 2012 until June 16, 2013, is a cross-decade exploration of teen history and culture in Miami. Visitors will learn how Miami adolescents were impacted by World War II and the Vietnam War, listen to the sounds created by local teen garage bands and R&B stars of the 1960s, examine the role teens played in integrating Miami’s high schools, and view the distinct fashion statements made by them through the decades.
This exhibition has been organized by HistoryMiami in conjunction with 20 Miami-Dade County students participating in a three-year museum internship program. Exhibition sponsors include the AT&T Foundation, the Institute of Museum & Library Services and Miami-Dade County.
At the kick-off party, guests will enjoy burgers, fries and shakes as well as the sounds of DJ Zelda. Teens will gain all-access to the TEEN Lounge. Admission is free for HistoryMiami members, $10 for others and $7 for teens. Discounted parking at the Cultural Plaza Garage, 50 NW 2nd Avenue.

JAIMIE WARREN (b. Waukesha, WI, 1980) is a curator, performance artist,
photographer, and co-creator/co-director of the faux public access television show Whoop Dee Doo. Warren lives and works in Kansas City, MO, and has exhibited at White Flag Projects, St. Louis; Smith-Stewart, New York; The Atlanta Center for Contemporary Art, Atlanta; Max Wigram, London; Showroom for Media and Moving Art, Rotterdam; Getsumin, Osaka; Colette, Paris; and Higher Pictures, New York, among others.
This exhibition will feature a history of 10 years of self-portraiture by the artist, as well as a new series of re-creations of photoshopped collages created by anonymous users found on the Internet. The images reference both art historical paintings and visual pairings of pop culture icons. Warren collaborated with artist Lee Heinemann, who created custom makeup, props and masks.

The BACARDI Columbus Day Regatta is arguably one of South Florida’s largest regatta drawing over 100 boats each year from as far as Palm Beach and Monroe Counties.

Last year over 100 boats registered and this year 150 are expected. The BACARDI Columbus Day Regatta is expecting a large increase in entries due to the new concerted efforts by local sailing clubs to promote sailing on Biscayne Bay. It is estimated that over 1,000 sailors will be participating in the regatta and spending time in Coconut Grove. Now a tradition, the Dockside BBQ and BACARDI Bar at Coral Reef Yacht Club has become the premier Saturday night sailing event… better than any party down at Elliot Key. As it has been since the first regatta in 1954, all land activities will take place at Coral Reef Yacht Club including Friday’s Skipper’s meeting, Saturday night’s Dockside BBQ and the Awards Party the following week, Saturday October 13.
The regatta is open to monohulls and multihulls in eleven different classes, ensuring there is a perfect class for everyone. Skippers can choose from the straightforward Gunkhole class, perfect for new entrants and cruising sailors, to the ARC and PHRF classes that zigzag their way across the bay. All classes are scored on the PHRF handicap system. Trophies will be awarded to the first three boats as well as numerous perpetual trophies. Skippers should refer to the Notice of Race (NOR) available at www.columbusdayregatta.net for docking information, which must be made in advanced.

A major Afro-Cuban jazz group, Oriente was formed in 1993 by guitarist Egidio Balzola. Oriente is named after one of Cuba’s six provinces that existed until 1976. The colorful band mixes together Afro-Cuban music with the influences of straightahead jazz, blues, Brazilian, Caribbean and New Orleans jazz. The group first caught on in 1994 when it played at the Snug Harbor Jazz Club and at concerts at Loyola and Tulane Universities, and it has been popular ever since. The members of Oriente have played and recorded with such notables as Mongo Santamaria, Cachao, Willie Nelson, Jaco Pastorius, Celia Cruz, Candido, Babatunde Olatunji and even Yma Sumac. Oriente has recorded three CDs so far (most recent is Ten Spaces in Time). They have performed at such festivals as the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, TwiRoPa and Jeff Fest, MOJA Pan-African and Piccolo Spoleto Festivals, the Caribbean Soul Celebration and the South Florida Jazz & Heritage Festival. They have also toured England, Germany and Iceland. Oriente’s repertoire ranges from Charles Mingus and Jaco Pastorius to Bob Marley, with many stops in between.

EGEDA (Audio-Visual Producers’ Rights Management Association), the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts and the Miami International Film Festival of Miami Dade College Present the Second Recent Cinema from Spain Film Series in November 2012.
Following the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural event, the second edition of the Recent Cinema from Spain Series will return to Miami to host a four day Spanish film event celebrating the diversity of contemporary Spanish Cinema. Taking place at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, the series will showcase six of Spain’s most recognized films of the year. Ticket and pass holders will enjoy nightly premieres and participate in Q&A sessions with filmmakers and cast members following each film. Kicking off the event will be a red-carpet opening night gala on Thursday, November 8, 2012 followed by a VIP reception. All guests attending the opening night screening will receive a gift bag upon departure.
The Recent Cinema from Spain Series is produced by EDEGA (Audio-Visual Producers’ Rights Management Association), the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts and the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) of Miami Dade College.
Oscar nominated artist and internationally renowned designer Javier Mariscal has kindly contributed his talents, creating the second edition of the Recent Cinema from Spain Series poster in a vibrant and colourful composition that serves as the series logo and overall theme. The artwork features Madrid’s emblematic Gran VÃa with an attractive, youthful Spanish actress welcoming American audiences to experience the latest Spanish film productions, illustrated in the same style as Mariscal’s Oscar nominated animation film “Chico & Rita.â€

Paul Robeson –
Paul Robeson was the epitome of the 20th-century Renaissance man. He was an exceptional athlete, actor, singer, cultural scholar, author, and political activist. His talents made him a revered man of his time, yet his radical political beliefs all but erased him from popular history. Today, more than one hundred years after his birth, Robeson is just beginning to receive the credit he is due. To this day, Paul Robeson’s many accomplishments remain obscured by the propaganda of those who tirelessly dogged him throughout his life. His role in the history of civil rights and as a spokesperson for the oppressed of other nations remains relatively unknown. In 1995, more than seventy-five years after graduating from Rutgers, his athletic achievements were finally recognized with his posthumous entry into the College Football Hall of Fame. Though a handful of movies and recordings are still available, they are a sad testament to one of the greatest Americans of the twentieth century. If we are to remember Paul Robeson for anything, it should be for the courage and the dignity with which he struggled for his own personal voice and for the rights of all people
Marian Anderson –
Marian Anderson was 42 when she sang her legendary open-air concert at the Lincoln Memorial on 9 April 1939. Anderson was a famous contralto of the day, and the concert was arranged after the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let her perform at Constitution Hall because she was black. (First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned from the DAR in protest and helped arrange the concert at the Lincoln Memorial.) The concert is legendary in the American civil rights movement and, despite Anderson’s many other musical successes, became the signature moment in her long international career. Anderson broke many other color barriers, including becoming the first African-American to sing at the White House and at New York’s Metropolitan Opera. Anderson was the aunt of former Oregon Symphony conductor James DePriest… Anderson was honored on a stamp from the U.S. Postal Service in 2005… Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963.

Myra Breckinridge –
Myron Breckinridge is waiting for his sex-change operation while a stoned surgeon stumbles into the operating room. Before the drugged doctor begins Myron’s operation, he counsels him. Myron persists and the doctor goes through with it. An enthusiastic audience observing the operation applauds the medical achievement and rises in a standing ovation. After the operation, Myron arrives in Hollywood as Myra while in the rest of the film Myron pops up from time to time as Myra’s alter ego. Myra goes to an acting academy owned by her uncle, Buck Loner, a former cowboy star. The real reason for Myra’s arrival is to claim her half of Uncle Buck’s estate, which she says she’s entitled to. Buck Loner stalls by giving her a job teaching the history of motion pictures. Buck Loner has several friends. One of them is Letitia Van Allen, an ancient Hollywood talent scout. The sex-starved septuagenarian runs an acting agency “for leading men only.” (Comedy)

Not For Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony –
Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were two heroic women who vastly bettered the lives of a majority of American citizens. For more than fifty years they led the public battle to secure for women the most basic civil rights and helped establish a movement that would revolutionize American society. Yet despite the importance of their work and they impact they made on our history, a century and a half later, they have been almost forgotten. They were nearly total opposites in their personalities and attributes, yet complemented each other’s strengths perfectly. Stanton was a gifted writer and radical thinker, full of fervor and radical ideas but pinned down by her responsibilities as wife and mother, while Anthony, a tireless and single-minded tactician, was eager for action, undaunted by the terrible difficulties she faced. As Stanton put it, “I forged the thunderbolts, she fired them.” The relationship between these two extraordinary women and its effect on the development of the suffrage movement are richly depicted by Ward and Burns, and in the accompanying essays by Ellen Carol Dubois, Ann D. Death in Venice –
In this adaptation of the Thomas Mann novel, avant-garde composer Gustave Aschenbach (loosely based on Gustav Mahler) travels to a Venetian seaside resort in search of repose after a period of artistic and personal stress. But he finds no peace there, for he soon develops a troubling attraction to an adolescent boy, Tadzio, on vacation with his family. The boy embodies an ideal of beauty that Aschenbach has long sought and he becomes infatuated. However, the onset of a deadly pestilence threatens them both physically and represents the corruption that compromises and threatens all ideals. (Drama/Fantasy)

Wine by the Bay and Amuse at Casa Moderna Hotel and Spa, Downtown Miami present their second edition of “Wine and Dine by the Bay – Le Tour de France.” Chef Kenneth Williams (formerly of Fisher Island Club) and Wine by the Bay owner, Stefano Campanini will offer guests a French-inspired getaway through a five-course course meal paired with fine wines representing various French regions.
The first stop is Loire where Cremant de Loire Julien Fouet accompanies the “Deviled Eggs and Caviar†starter. Then, travel to Côte de Provence with Chateau de Berne Cuvée Speciale Rosé along with “Baked Mushrooms Stuffed with Escargot and Herb Butter.†After stops in Bourgogne and Bordeaux, the tour ends with the dessert classic “Napoleon.â€

The Miami Nice Jazz Festival (www.miaminicejazzfestival.com), an extension of Europe’s most significant and internationally celebrated jazz event, the Nice Jazz Festival (www.nicejazzfestival.fr), is proud to announce they will be launching a Miami edition this fall. The festival will call downtown Miami its home for three days beginning on October 26, 2012.
The first Miami Nice Jazz Festival is a partnership between Sister Cities Nice, France and Miami, Florida, joining forces under the leadership of the festival’s founder and CEO, Philippe Pautesta-Herder. The festival takes place at downtown Miami’s historic gem, the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. “Downtown Miami provides the perfect backdrop for the festival as Miami is a city rich in historic heritage and culture parallel to that embodied by the festival, its musicians and its patrons,†said festival founder Philippe Pautesta-Herder.
The festival kicks off Miami French Week, a week designed to promote French culture in South Florida. “The Miami Nice Jazz Festival is the first and only jazz festival of such international significance to come to South Florida and I am extremely grateful to be a part of such an iconic occurrence,†said Philippe.
The lineup will showcase an eclectic mix of both straight-ahead and Latin jazz performances, highlighting legendary artists such as Dee Dee Bridgewater (Festival Ambassador), along with Florida debuts of bassist Kyle Eastwood, Eddie Palmieri & his Latin Jazz Band and French drummer Andre Ceccarelli featuring Alex Ligertwood ( former lead singer of Santana).
Also scheduled to perform at the festival will be the Florida International University Big Band featuring vocalist Sally Night and The South Florida Jazz Orchestra with Chuck Bergeron featuring Nicole Henry. Jazz student bands from Florida International University and University of Miami will also animate the Gusman Center each night when doors open at 7:00 p.m.

Bob Marley’s First Lieutenant, Aston “Family Man†Barrett, who has been the driving force of the Wailers for more than 40 years, is bringing the band back to the US for their REVOLUTION tour this summer. Known for his signature bass-patterns that define contemporary reggae music, “Family Man†continues the mission he started with Bob Marley more than four decades ago to spread the message of peace, love and equality to all people of the world.
Jamaica is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. Historically, with the liberation from British control in 1962, Jamaica realized a new potential for expressive freedom. On the journey to construct their own national identity, two movements emerged as the leading forces of Jamaican culture- ska music and the Rastafarian religion. Bob Marley famously combined these two movements and became the voice that spread them both to an international audience. As Jamaica’s toughest singer/songwriter, it wasn’t until his talents were combined with the renowned musical abilities of the Barrett brothers (Family Man and Carly) that Jamaican music was catapulted onto the worldwide musical stage. Through the incorporation of Rastafarian beliefs into ska music and the use of unique bass patterns specific to the Barrett brothers’ rhythm section, they together defined Reggae as a genre and Jamaican culture in a way that no one, before or since, has been able to accomplish.
With each performance the Wailers reinforce why they are the greatest reggae band in the world. These world-renowned musicians are arguably some of the most influential and talented in the world, yet they always keep the focus on why they are here. Miami Offroad Club gearing up for the first annual “Dirty Rally†to raise funds to bring clean drinking water to developing countries.
The members of the Miami Offroad Club (MOC) own 4×4 vehicles that are often covered in mud. The club members are putting their dirty jeeps to good use as they organize a fundraiser to bring clean, safe drinking water to people in developing countries. The MOC is organizing the 1st Annual Dirty Rally. MOC members are driving from Miami to Key West on August 11, 2012. MOC is inviting all Jeep lovers and 4×4 clubs to join them on the charity ride. The rally fee is $30 for single riders and $40 for multiple riders. One hundred percent (100%) of the donations directly fund the clean water projects in developing nations.
Did you know that 800 million people on the planet don’t have access to clean drinking water? Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. The MOC is doing their part to change that and you can help by joining the rally on August 11, 2012 or donating to the fundraiser. All donations are welcome and every little bit helps. Miami Lyric Opera presents what is perhaps the funniest of all comic operas, The Barber of Seville. Rossini’s fun and lively romp starts with an overture that is instantly familiar to fans of opera, Woody Woodpecker and Bugs Bunny. The opera’s energy picks up with a non-stop parade of hit tunes, and concludes with an “all is forgiven†finale bubbling over with joy. You’ll laugh out loud at a series of slapstick tricks fit for a Warner Brothers cartoon that make this opera buffa as fresh and appealing now as when it first performed in 1816.

Lindsey Buckingham has accomplished almost everything that can be done in rock ‘n’ roll, earning a spot in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with Fleetwood Mac, winning countless awards, selling out venues around the world, and helping define the sound of rock for the last 3 decades. He’s the predominant musical force behind such Mac albums as Rumours and the innovative Tusk, and has created a critically acclaimed body of solo work that yielded the hits, “Trouble,†“Go Insane,†and “Holiday Road.†But one thing was missing as Buckingham and his band mates were dominating music. “The irony of the bulk of the Fleetwood Mac experience was that none of us were comfortable,†Buckingham confesses. “We had this external success going, which was not matched by any kind of internal success. It didn’t make any of us whole people or contented people in that sense.â€
Now married and with three kids Buckingham has found that internal success as he puts it. “It really does feel like the best time of my life,†he says. The Barber of Seville, or The Futile Precaution (Il barbiere di Siviglia, ossia L’inutile precauzione) is an opera buffa in two acts by Gioachino Rossini with a libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The libretto was based on Pierre Beaumarchais’s comedy Le Barbier de Séville (1775), which was originally an opéra comique, or a mixture of spoken play with music. The première (under the title Almaviva, or the Futile Precaution) took place on 20 February 1816, at the Teatro Argentina, Rome. It was one of the earliest Italian operas to be performed in America and premiered at the Park Theater in New York City on 29 November 1825.Rossini’s Barber has proven to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music, and has been described as the opera buffa of all opere buffe; even after two hundred years, its popularity on the modern opera stage attests to that greatness.

Chaplins last ‘silent’ film, filled with sound effects, was made when everyone else was making talkies. Charlie turns against modern society, the machine age, (The use of sound in films ?) and progress. Firstly we see him frantically trying to keep up with a production line, tightening bolts. He is selected for an experiment with an automatic feeding machine, but various mishaps leads his boss to believe he has gone mad, and Charlie is sent to a mental hospital… When he gets out, he is mistaken for a communist while waving a red flag, sent to jail, foils a jailbreak, and is let out again. An Indian family is expelled from Uganda when Idi Amin takes power to assist in the building of a railroad.. They move to Mississippi and time passes. The Indian daughter falls in love with a black man, and the respective families have to come to terms with it. Jay gets a rude shock when Anil tells him that Meena is having an affair with a “kaalu” (Black man) named Demetrius Williams, who runs a business cleaning carpets in motel rooms. Watch how tensions rise when salt is rubbed on old wounds, and racism, called “tradition” by some folks in the U.S., raises its ugly head, perhaps to claim more victims – this time Meena and Demetrius – who may not be able to handle the chain of events started by their love for each other. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
Joey Drayton brings her fiancé, Dr. John Prentice, home to sunny San Francisco to meet her affluent parents. Their liberal persuasions are now put to the test, for although the young man is an ideal choice (he’s highly and internationally respected in the medical field, and he’s impeccably mannered, handsome, well dressed and of a respectable California family), he’s black. The film, which covers one busy day in the Drayton home, is essentially a drawing-room comedy, a series of cross-conversations between the young doctor and the girl’s parents, and finally between all sets of parents and offspring. A simple dinner is extended to include the doctor’s parents, who fly up from Los Angeles for the evening, and the crusty but benevolent old Irish priest, a friend of the family. Thus, the title of the film . . . (Drama/Romance)

This month marks the 40 year anniversary of the Ramon Puig brand here in South Florida. Established by the now late Mr. Puig, the legacy continues with his son Louis Puig. The reputable and world famous clothing brand will not only celebrate four decades of style, but also a new location this Thursday June 28th 2012, from 6:00-9:00PM. The festivities will highlight the revamped brand via a by-invitation Grand Opening of the new Downtown Miami store location and include a presentation by Mayor Tomas Regalado.
Ramon Puig opened his first guayabera store in Cuba in 1943, in the ancestral home of the garment, Sancti Espiritus, the city of his birth. Since he was a child, Puig showed an interest in tailoring and once of age, he learned and developed his skills under a local tailor, and opened up his first shop at the age of twenty-three. Soon after, he married a local woman, Juana MarÃa, and taught her the skills he had developed so she could assist him in his burgeoning business.
His attention to detail, cut, and style soon led customers all over Cuba, the Caribbean and South America to coin him “el mago de guayabera” (The Guayabera Magician). The guayabera shirts he designed made of crisp white linen, slimmed customers’ waistlines and added to their appearance a look of elegance. As his reputation grew, Puig drove to the major cities in Cuba to take client’s measurements, and then made the return trip to personally deliver his custom fitted guayaberas.
In 1968, Puig departed his country and arrived in Miami, with his wife Juana MarÃa and his then eight-year old son, Louis. In 1971 Puig was able to open his first shop in Little Havana, next to Versailles restaurant and thereafter a larger one, further west on Southwest eight street. Rapidly making connections in Miami’s Cuban and Latin community, he built his business into an International success with client celebrities, actors, athletes and musicians such as Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Andy Garcia, Alex Rodriguez, Alonzo Mourning, Ice Cube as well as every US President since Ronald Reagan who began sporting Puig’s authentic guayaberas. Reagan toured Miami wearing Puig’s garments and rechristened “El Mago de las Guayaberas” as “El Rey de las Guayaberas” (The King of the Guayaberas).
Due to the precision folds, cuts, and attention to detail, the Ramon Puig Guayabera has become synonymous with cool. The comfortable and versatile garment, appropriate for business meetings, social gatherings, family events, and daily casual- wear gained current day popularity. Maintaining traditional value of their ancestral homelands, the younger Miami sector, being the pulse of fashion, has embraced Puig’s authentic garments as the style for social activities, including nights out on the town at Miami’s trendiest spots, and even as a fashion for wedding ceremonies, with “guayabera weddings” becoming the recent trend in the nuptial scene.
This uptake of the guayabera into the fashion world has led to renowned publications like GQ Magazine to name Ramon Puig “the master of the guayabera” and the “greatest guayabera maker”. Beginning on June 28th, an exhibit at History Miami will pay homage via â€The Guayabera: A Shirt’s Storyâ€. This exhibit will explore the changing uses and significance of the guayabera and the guayabera’s evolution from a guajiro shirt in the late 1800s, into a fashionable piece of contemporary menswear. On display will be historical examples and photographs of the shirt that highlight its changing uses and significance over time, its construction and the tailors, fashion designers and tradition bearers who have played an important role in its stylistic development. Puig’s scissors which he smuggled out of Cuba and his original 1940’s guayabera will also be on display.
Today, Louis Puig is carrying the legacy of his father. “We must embrace the past and understand the direction of the future in order to be successful. We have added updated styles, fabrics and colors to further expand our existent inventory and please our wide customer base. This new store exemplifies the new direction we are taking our brand while remaining true to the dedication and pride my father had for his craft. For almost 70 years we have made the best and most authentic guayaberas in the world, I am proud to continue my father’s legacy.â€
