Pinecrest, Florida 33156

Cost: $12 Adults; $8 Kids; Family Pack (2 Adults + 2 Kids) $30

Orchestra Miami will present a fun-filled Family Concert, featuring a performance of The Purple Palace, composed by Bruce Adolphe with the story written by Louise Gikow. The 28-piece orchestra will be led by Orchestra Miami Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi along with a special guest narrator. This delightful program will last approximately 50 minutes and is perfect for children ages 3 and up.

The Purple Palace tells the comic but touching tale of the land of Chromatica, where everything is light and color. Queen Red and King Blue have a child, Princess Purple. When she becomes queen, she banishes all colors but purple. This leads to nothing but trouble for her, and she eventually comes to understand her mistake. She invites all the banished colors to return, and Chromatica is once again vibrant and full of color. Beyond its affirmative social message for children- emphasizing the value of diversity and democracy- the story is rich in visual images that are clearly portrayed in the music. Each color has a theme, and as the plot unfolds, orchestral colors are varied and mixed just as an artist would use colors to illustrate the story in a book.

The concert will be on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 4:00 PM at Pinecrest Gardens’ Banyan Bowl, located at 11000 SW 57 Avenue, Pinecrest, FL 33156. Tickets are $12 for Adults and $8 for children, and Family Packs (2 Adults & 2 Children) are available for $30. Children 2 and younger admitted free of charge with lap seating only. Seating is by general admission and there is ample free, on-site parking. Tickets can be purchased online through Orchestra Miami’s website (www.OrchestraMiami.org) or by calling Brown Paper Tickets at (800) 838-3006. Further information can be obtained by visiting www.orchestramiami.org or by calling (305) 274-2103.

Saxophonist, composer and bandleader Mike DiRubbo’s sound has been described as “deep, dark, immense, with a machete edge that denotes a ready-for-anything urban sensibility.”

DiRubbo has reigned supreme as one of the most durable and dynamic musicians of his generation since arriving in New York two decades ago. On his instrument, he has it all: from Benny Carter’s mastery of melody and Johnny Hodges’ ballad mellow tones to Charlie Parker’s light-speed fluency.

Orchestra Miami is proud to continue its tradition of bringing high quality family and educational programs to the public with Time Flies, a magical musical exploration of evolution based on the award winning children’s book by Eric Rohmann.

Time Flies is the story of a little bird who is caught in a dinosaur exhibit at a natural history museum. The story is told through the evocative music of Bruce Adolphe and lush illustrations of Mr. Rohmann. Fourteen soloists from Orchestra Miami will perform with Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi conducting. The performance will be accompanied by projected images from Mr. Rohmann’s book.

In addition to enjoying Time Flies, children and their families will be introduced to each instrument through music and pictures. The performance lasts approximately 45-50 minutes and is perfect for children ages 3 and up.

Inspired by the fountains and gardens of the palace of Aranjuez, Rodrigo’s concerto is elegant, distinctively Spanish. It is arguably the best known composition for guitar, thanks in no small part to the extraordinary beauty of its central Adagio.
Award-winning classical guitarist Miloš Karadaglić joins the Orchestra for these concerts. “Karadaglić is a guitarist of superior musical and technical gifts who allows his personality to sing through the music with taste and intelligence.” (The Guardian)

The South Florida Friends of Classical Music, announces the third edition of “Miami Music Festival from Around the World” (formerly known as Miami World Music Festival) which will take place from October, 24 to 26, in the Wertheim Center for the Performing Arts of the Florida International University (FIU).

The 2014 Festival, under its new name, will embark on an international sonic adventure. Four shows in which music lovers will come together to enjoy a wide scope of musical expressions ranging from well-known opera arias to the vibrant African rhythms and explosive piano duels.

On Sunday a double round of concerts begins with a spectacular journey through the world of opera. “Women in Opera” features five sopranos and mezzo-sopranos singing ravishing duos, trios, recognized arias.

The festival closes with the “Monster Piano Explosion,” a marathon of solos, four-hand throw-downs, two pianos duels and other surprises that will blow your senses, with 20 accomplished pianists from the South of Florida.

All proceeds from the Miami World Music Festival will be benefit educational programs for young by South Florida Friends of Classical Music. The Festival is funded in part with the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs of Miami – Dade and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor of Miami – Dade County and the County Board of Commissioners. They are back in Miami for the third time to present their annual concert par excellence! The Living Earth Show will be presenting premiere performances of New York composer Jacob Cooper’s Pasturing (Reprise) and Philadelphian Jonathan Pfeffer’s The Bell, The Ball, The Bow-tie, and the Boot, two pieces that were written for the ensemble’s 2015 collaborative production with Post:Ballet. These works utilize electric guitar, percussion, samples, and other electronic sounds to create woks that dialogue with the classical tradition and contemporary culture in equal measure.

Called “a vanguard effort of new chamber music” and “energetically provocative” by The San Francisco Examiner, “a much sought-after presence on the indie classical scene” by The San Francisco Classical Voice, and “a fully distorted perpetual motion of awesome” by I Care If You Listen, The Living Earth Show – electric guitarist Travis Andrews and percussionist Andy Meyerson – has developed a reputation as one of the most versatile and virtuosic contemporary chamber groups on the west coast. Memorizing every work it performs, The Living Earth Show thrives on pushing the boundaries of technical and artistic possibility in its presentation of commissioned electro-acoustic chamber music.

The FIU Big Band, directed by James Hacker, is the most visible artistic group at FIU. With over 25 major performances yearly it has become internationally recognized as one of the premier college jazz ensembles in the world. Invitations to the International Association for Jazz Education Convention, the Mid-West Band & Orchestra Clinic, the Wigan Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Quito Jazz Festival, and the Maceo Jazz Festival have taken this world-class group of graduate & undergraduate students beyond the realm of the ‘typical’ college band. “This big band sports an explosive sound and fluid mode of attack. They abide by a get up and go style of musicality via brisk charts and precision-oriented interplay. In effect, the album title offers a vivid depiction of the band’s multihued gait, where they tear it up and also temper the various pulses in spots.” (Glenn Astarita)

Wendy Pedersen is one of South Florida’s favorite performers. Her high-energy vocal delivery, with deep, convincing emotion has been impacting audiences for many years. Wendy has won many awards including the Southern Bell/Pace “Jazz Artist of the Year” and a Miami New Times “best vocalist”, saying, “Wendy can shake the rafters or break your heart…” “When she sings, her voice, an elegant melismatic instrument, evokes the standard emotions, yes, but deeper longings and muted desires.”
(Leonard Pitts, Miami Herald)

Pinecrest Gardens is located at 11000 SW 57th Ave (Red Rd.) Tickets are $25-$30 at pinecrestgardens.org or 305-669-6990.

It is rare to hear a single instrument alone for an entire recital program unless it is piano, but solo instruments have inspired some of the most creative work from composers throughout history.  This program traces the sparks of imagination inspired by the violin.  Early caprices by Pietro Locatelli and Niccolo Paganini established a tradition for experimentation with technique and new sounds, and the modern Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino takes up that baton in his own Caprices for violin solo. New works by Dorothy Hindman, Charles Mason, and Juraj Kojs enlarge the palette considerably with electronics.
Assistant Professor of Violin at Florida State University, violinist Benjamin Sung is also concertmaster of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, a faculty artist at the Brevard Music Center, and a roster artist for Florida Arts on Tour.  Recent concert highlights include the 2014 Brevard Music Festival, XIII Festival y Academia del Nuevo Mundo in Maracaibo, Venezuela, the Cuban premiere of the Schnittke Concerto Grosso No. 1 and the Estaciones Portenas by Piazzolla, and a TED talk for TEDx Fargo. Sung’s recent album of new American works entitled FluxFlummoxed was hailed by Fanfare Magazine as “a brilliant performance of four superb works.” www.benjaminsung.com.

Last year, Venus Rising Women’s Drum & Dance Ensemble made their debut at the Miami World Festival from around the World with their performance of an “An Afro Roots Rhythmic Journey.” The presentation earned them a standing ovation and an invitation to return this year for a repeat headline slot. This year, Venus Rising will present “One Pulse – Many Beats” on October 25, 2014 at the Florida International University’s Wertheim Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall (11200 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33199). The musical celebration begins at 7:30 p.m.

“We’re honored and thrilled to be performing once again at the Miami World Music Festival,” says troupe founder and leader Zeva Soroker. “Last year’s presentation focused on the rich traditions of our African roots. This year, we will be focusing on our group’s diversity through our continued exploration of the traditional music of Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil and the Middle East.” The Connecticut-born Soroker began playing drums in Jamaica and continued her studies in Guniea, West Africa. She is currently a drum instructor at the The Goddess Store in Hollywood.

The Miami World Music Festival, under the artistic direction of Dr. Adolfo Vidal, was created by the South Florida Friends of Classical Music, a non-profit organization to encourage and support classical music performances and the musical heritage of countries around the world. The annual festival features academic, traditional and contemporary music from diverse cultures performed by acclaimed world-class artists. In addition, the 2014 festival will also be presenting Michael Linville and Vidal with percussionist Fellows from the New World School of the Arts performing Two Pianos & Percussion, featuring the music of Argentina (Astor Piazzola) and Hungary (Bela Bartok).

Tickets for the event at Wertheim Center for the Performing Arts cost $25, $35 and $45 and are available for purchase online at http://bit.ly/MWFW14 or by phone at 786.581.7746.

FGO will select pieces that either reflect the inspiration of the artwork or that were composed around the same time. Both FGO and MOA hope to give audience members a sense of what was going on in music and visual art at that time and connect the visual art on display to the musical art our singers will present. “Come see how art inspires art at this unique concert!”

Be prepared to swing to the incredible sax and clarinet playing of Jowee Omicil at the release of his latest CD, “Naked,” at Arts Garage in Delray Beach. Start time is 8 PM. Accompanying Jowee will be Jeff Deen, tabla, halo; Michael Piolet, drums; Ti West, tambour; Carlos Alabaci, bass; and Harold St-Louis- keys/piano

More than a mere player, Jowee is a unique and prolific composer, producer, arranger, vocalist, band leader, and music instructor who has devoted much of his time to passing down his broad knowledge of musicology to students of all ages. On May 18, 2010, Jowee had the honor of being invited to President Barack Obama’s White House to play his music for its inaugural observation of Haitian Flag Day before 150 VIP guests. With his latest release, “Naked”, Jowee offers a work that is steeped in purpose yet listener-friendly and accessible to all. In essence, that is the only way he knows to approach the making of his music.

Says Jowee: “NAKED was recorded at the Riviera area stage theater with the bare minimum. The nakedness invites the listener to participate. I see it as a jazz orgy, where everybody join in. Going forward, setting up your own standards it’s a call and response to my musical ancestors Fela Kuti, Coltrane, Dibango, Toussaint Louverture, Jean Baptiste DuSable, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, Kenny Garrett, Branford Marsalis, Kirk Franklin, Kathleen Battle, Luciano Pavarotti …what does that do to the listeners? It invites them to add their grain of salt and join the musical Fest. While listening to NAKED the people will want to jam with the record. This is the purpose of being NAKED musically.”

It’s the continuation of his previous album, “Roots & Grooves,” which was naked too. Jowee is opening a dialogue with music lovers by releasing this Album. “I’m very satisfied with the outcome of this project. May the world face my nakedness,” he says. There is a Gospel medley, performed as a duet with Harold St-Louis, dedicated to his Dad which brings Jowee to his church roots. Ti West on congas/tambour is a master of roots folklore rhythms in Haiti. He’s featured vocally and instrumentally. The eclectic sound of the halo, hapi and the tabla are all played by Jeffrey Deen, who’s an Indian-rooted musician whose performances provide joy to listeners. James Quinlan on bass, Michael Piolet on drums, and Carlos Alabaci round out the personnel, all of whom were under 20 at the time. Jowee loves to promote the younger generation who will be and who are becoming the leaders of today’s scene.

Jowee’s music is steeped in the spirituality set forth by his minister father. “I had the honor of producing music on the very last recording of Haiti’s great Pepe Bayard,” Jowee reflects. “He was dying while we were making that record, but immersing himself in music helped him live a whole lot longer. That’s the power of music… and that’s what I want to bring back. I also want people to DANCE to jazz again. Jazz was once popular music and I want the world to groove once again.”

During the performance, artist Lou-Lou Davila-Hagopian will “paint to music,” with the finished product on display at the conclusion of the performance.

“This young man is a very talented and gifted musician, always in the lab working on his songs and practicing his instrument. He is a person we will be hearing in the future. Keep your ears and eyes open.”
–Kenny Garrett, Musician

This program of music for percussion and electronics is centered around Christopher Cerrone’s 22-minute work Memory Palace. Scored for found and homemade percussion instruments ranging from tuned beer bottles to 17 planks of wood and accompanied by field recordings made by the composer, Memory Palace is a beautiful exploration of the sonic possibilities of percussion. The program also includes Celestial Sphere, a work for live marimba and pre-recorded marimbas written for me last year by David Crowell, Simple Songs of Birth and Return for mbira and electronics by Nathan Davis, 21 for marimba and electronics and Stop Speaking for snare drum and electronics, both by Andy Akiho and the world premiere of House Music by Juraj Kojs.

Praised for his “excellent” and “precisely attuned” performances by the New York Times, percussionist Ian David Rosenbaum has developed a musical breadth far beyond his years. He made his Kennedy Center debut in 2009 and later that year garnered a special prize created for him at the Salzburg International Marimba Competition. Last season, Mr. Rosenbaum joined the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS Two program as only the second percussionist they have selected in their history. He has recorded for the Bridge, Innova and Naxos labels and is on the faculty of the Dwight School in Manhattan. For more information, please visit iandavidrosenbaum.com.

Miami DWNTWN Art Days
September 19-21, All Day
dwntwnartdays Downtown Miami
Website
Facebook

Art Days is designed to bring together and promote the cultural community, in addition to facilitating and incentivizing art exhibitions and other cultural activities. In its third year, Art Days, supported by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), continues to provide free inspiring art activities across the Downtown cultural landscape. Working in partnership with a variety of arts and culture institutions, organizations and artists, Art Days is a three-day cultural exploration that incorporates countless free events and exhibitions for the community to experience and enjoy. Art Days offers something for everyone from family activities, panel discussions, international exhibitions, bike tours, walking tours and so much more!

Art Days is comprised of three components:
The Hub
located at MCAD, 100 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL 33132
The “hub” is the epicenter for information on Art Days. In 2013 over 130 events took place around Downtown Miami, so it’s worthwhile to take a moment and set an itinerary to make the most out of the weekend!
The hub is the place to…
…find someone to help you navigate through the vast amount of things to do.
…start most walking and bike tours.
…be creative and paint your own unique t-shirt.
…hang out and connect with your friends on social media.
…find people to welcome you to Downtown Miami.

The Fringe
The “Fringe” is a set of curated activations of Downtown Miami in the form of visual and performance art projects. The visual art projects are commissioned, site-specific public art installations, curated by a specialist contemporary art curator Amanda Sanfilippo, and located within a one-mile radius around the Hub for easy walkability. This year’s Fringe has been initiated in partnership with Miami Dade County’s Art in Public Places.

The Events
Throughout the three day weekend, over 60 different art organizations, culture organizations, non-profits and artists activate their spaces with exhibitions, performances, cocktails meet and greet, art talks, panels and more. New for 2014 is an increased family friendly programming and children activities to accommodate the growing number of families living in Downtown.
Realizing the lack of performing arts in last year’s mix of events, the Miami DDA, in collaboration with the Olympia Theatre, is debuting a series of performance pieces in public areas and venues all around Downtown
As a guideline, here is a schedule for the weekend:
Thursday: Media/VIP Preview of the Fringe and Art Days
Friday: School tours/ Exhibitions openings/ post -work cocktail activities
Saturday: Museum day; art tours and exhibitions
Sunday: Cultural activities/bike tours

More than a dozen musicians come together to celebrate the life and legacy of one of the most recognized and beloved artists of Venezuela: Simón Díaz.

Many around the world have heard some version of “Caballo Viejo” including Gipsy King’s “Bamboleo,” unaware of who the composer is, but for Venezuelans he is perhaps the greatest representative of their folklore and one of their country’s icon: Simon Diaz.

For 6 decades, Simón Díaz, was part of the popular culture of Venezuela and became, without doubt, one of the most beloved characters of the country as a singer, songwriter, actor, comedian, television talk show host and cultural promoter.

On August 22, a constellation of stars will be offering a tribute to Simon at the Olympia Theatre at Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. A show that will take the audience on a journey through the musical life of the singer, with anecdotes, memories and lots of music. Under the musical direction of Carlos Puchi, guest artists will perform his most famous compositions, such as “Caballo Viejo,” “Sabana,” “Mi Querencia,” “Tonada de Luna Llena,” “Mercedes,” “El Loco Juan Carbina” and many more.

Guest artists include: Huascar Barradas, Luz Marina, María Teresa Chacín, Frank Quintero, Ilan Chester, María Rivas, Karina, Fernando and Juan Carlos, Julio Briceño (Amigos Invisible) Alberto Slezynger (Daiquirí), Saúl Vera, Rummy Olivo, Roberto Torres, José Luis Rodríguez (El Puma) and Simón Díaz’s granddaughter, Daniela Diaz Morales. Elí Bravo and Bettsimar Díaz will serve as emcees.

The fame of Simón Díaz went beyond Venezuela’s borders and his songs were performed around the world by artists such as: Mercedes Sosa, Joan Manuel Serrat, Julio Iglesias, Richard Clayderman, Ray Conniff, Gipsy Kings, Roberto Torres, Caetano Veloso, Danny Rivera, Cheo Feliciano Gilberto Santa Rosa, among others. They were also translated into several languages. In September 2008, he was awarded a Latin Grammy for their Lifetime Achievement Award.

Proceeds will be donated to the Foundation Friends of Children with Cancer

Called “…the new Latin sound of Miami” by the Miami Herald, PALO! has become a favorite among South Florida’s live music devotees. PALO! plays a style of music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk”. Their appeal lies in their unmatched musical energy, catchy original songs, and amazing display of impromptu virtuosity. A mix of vintage Latin rhythms and contemporary urban sounds gives PALO! their unique, infectious style.

PALO! was formed in 2003 when Steve Roitstein (producer, keyboards) asked musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Ed Calle (sax), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in a musical experiment combining Afro-Cuban music and jazz with funk beats.

PALO! currently enjoys a popular residency at Kimbaracumbara in Little Havana. They also perform at Hoy como Ayer, South Beach’s Jazid, Jazziz Bistro at the Hard Rock Casino, the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, and other area venues. They have been featured at private events for clients such as the Kiwanis of Little Havana, Cuba Libre Block Party, Downtown Miami’s Best, the Amigos For Kids Charity, Miami Book Fair International, and events for the City of Miami.

Currently, PALO! is completing their first studio CD, and is being featured on South Florida’s #1 Arbitron rated morning drive radio program, “El Show de Enrique y Joe” on La Kalle, 98.3.

North Shore Bandshell is at 73rd St and Collins Ave, Miami Beach. Show is from 6-9; FREE.

Local non-profit organization Community Arts and Culturewill once again celebrate African music and culture through at its yearly signature event called the Afro Roots World Music Festival on August 9, 2014. This year’s incarnation, the 16th overall, features an explosive lineup of local, regional and international acts, including headliners Suenalo (Miami), The Resolvers (Deerfield Beach), Morikeba Kouyate (Senegal), the Miami Street Band (Miami), Ephniko (Colombia) and DJ Le Spam (Montreal / Miami). The all-ages concert will be held at 7th Circuit Studios (228 NE 59th Street, Miami, FL 33137) beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at afrorootsfest.brownpapertickets.com; admission is $15 on the day of show.

“I’m proud and excited to present the 2014 Afro Roots Fest lineup once again featuring Senegal’s Morikeba Kouyate plus local favorites Suenalo, the Resolvers, DJ Le Spam and more,” says Community Arts and Culture’s executive director Jose Elias. “We feel the event has been getting better each year and this lineup is surely a testament to that. We are looking forward to celebrating the wide-spread influence that Africa has on music and continuing the mission of Community Arts and Culture, which is to foster an appreciation of the arts and culture through education.”

Kouyate, a 2012 Afro Roots Fest performer, is a seventh-generation Jali (Griot) who has performed professionally for more than thirty years throughout the U.S. and internationally as a solo artist, enticing audiences young and old with exciting music and engaging stories. He performs in his traditional Mandingo language, providing translations in English and French. Kouyate’s two releases, The Music of Senegal and Mandingo Royals & Warriors Folklore are traditional and contemporary songs and stories which share the 700+ year history of the Mandingo people.

Suenalo’s “AfroLatinBabymakin’DescargaFunk” has been literally moving fans since the band’s inception in the early 2000s, positioning them among the most-popular acts originating in Miami and making their performances a top local draw. Their unique mash-up of Latin, Afro-Caribbean, funk, hip-hop and R&B influences today defines the “Miami sound” and has earned them much press coverage and accolades such as the Miami New Times’ Best of awards for “Best Latin Rock Band”, “Best Latin Band” and “Best Band – Reader’s Choice.” Their releases include Collages (2003), 2006’s Suenalo, 2009’s Live at Transit and this year’s single “305”, which precedes an upcoming new full-length.

The Resolvers coined the phrase “Big Band Reggae” to describe their sound, which combines classic Jamaican roots and lively New Orleans stylings. Brother and sister Ojay and Sahara Smith (children of Ernie Smith) both take turns on lead vocals, fronting the band that features a blistering four-piece horn section. Their live shows have been described as”explosive” and “must see” and the band has gained the reputation as a premier reggae act. The band released an EP called Big Band Reggae in 2012 and continue to tour nationally in support of it.

Ephniko is a bilingual songwriter, DJ and emcee originally from Columbia and now residing in Miami. His style has been compared to Mos Def, the Orishas and Damian Marley and is a self-described “hip-hop educator/researcher” who does workshops with youth programs at area festivals, juvenile detention centers and schools. Ephniko released his debutEscribo Lo Que Vivo in 2008, a mixtape called Dig in 2010 and his music has been featured on more than a dozen and compilations since. He continues to DJ and tour South America to this day.

The Miami Street Band is probably best-recognized for their on-court performances in the NBA as the Miami HEAT Street Band. They play everything ranging from pop, Latin, hip-hop, R&B and even custom songs based on requests. Not just musicians, they are entertainment group who dance to every song, perform intricate routines and even provides crowd interaction from sing-a-longs to limbos. The Miami Street Band can range in size from 10-50 players.

Andrew Yeomanson is also known as DJ Le Spam, musicologist and founder / leader of the Spam Allstars. An extremely skilled musician, he also played guitar and toured in local legend Nil Lara’s band and today serves as producer for local and international acts from his North Miami-based City of Progress Studio. His vinyl collection numbers more than 10,000 and covers a broad spectrum of genres from Latin to funk, Afrobeat, hip-hop and R&B. He and his group tour the U.S. constantly, playing large music festivals, and are currently working on a new release, the highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2007’sElectrodomesticos.

The Afro Roots World Music Festival is sponsored in part by the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs. Sponsorship packages are still available and CAC is accepting tax-deductible donations for the day-of-event fundraising raffle.

Ed Motta long-ago established himself as a force in the world of Brazilian pop, soul and funk. His latest set AOR, released in 2013 by Lab 344, proves he is still vital within the realm of Musica Popular Brasileira and The Stage Miami is set to host him along with Batuke Samba Funk and DJ Fabio Soul on Thursday, August 7, 2014. General admission tickets are $25 in advance (available online at bit.ly/EdMotta080714), $35 on the day of show.

“We have been trying to bring Ed Motta to The Stage for quite some time now and we are excited about the opportunity to showcase him and his amazing live band” says Johann Torres, The Stage’s talent buyer and CEO of DNA Entertainment, one of the night’s presenting sponsors. “We feel that pairing him with one of our favorite local acts in Batuke Samba Funk is ideal and look forward to a special evening of Afro-Samba, Brazilian pop and soul.” The evening will also feature sets by DJ Fabio Soul, the evening’s other presenting sponsor.

Singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist and producer Motta scored early with the Brazilian soul/funk hits “Manuel”, “Vamos dançar”, “Baixo Rio” and “Um love” from his 1989 WEA Latina self-titled group debut Conexão Japeri. Subsequently, he embarked on a solo career, releasing 10 studio recordings to date, highlighted by 1993’s Entre e Ouça , Manual Pratico Para Festas Bailes e Afins, Vol.1 (1997), 2003’s Poptical and 2009’s Piquenique, plus a live album Ao Vivo (1993). AOR represents Motta’s most intricate work yet, featuring contributions from guitarists Chico Pinheiro and David T. Walker plus lyrics from Chico Amaral, Adriana Calcanhotto, Rita Lee, Dante Spinetta and wife Edna Lopes.

Batuke Samba Funk are a bilingual (Portuguese / English), high-energy Brazilian band that mixes rhythms such as funk from the 70’s with Afro-Samba, Brazilian big band, Batucada, soul and R&B. Formed in Miami in 2008 by bassist, composer, producer and Rio de Janeiro native Diogo Brown, the sextet also features guitarist Cezar Santana and is often augmented by a three-piece horn section. The goal of Batuke is to “Brazilianize” American sounds and “Americanize” Brazilian sounds in a perfect balanced fusion. The band is currently promoting its latest single “Mas Que Moça Bonita,” a smooth Brazilian pop number that sounds like a modern-day take on Sergio Mendes Brasil 66.

The physicality of sound is ephemeral. After sounds are made they exist only in our minds sonic library. In “Remembered Sounds” the Brooklyn-based violinist Andie Springer and the composer Erik DeLuca will explore musical concepts of memory, subjectivity, and decay through a variety of works for violin and electronics. The event will further feature the 2014 Elliot Carter Rome Prize winner Paula Matthusen in her “All Lengths in between Perhaps” for reel to reel and live electronics.

Plop, bang, puff, squeak, trash! Everyday objects and their sonic expressions as evidenced in the popular and experimental music cultures become alive in a new electronic music set, sound installation and happening by the Brooklyn-based Swede Adrian Knight and the Slovakian-Miamian Juraj Kojs. Lucid streams of musical bubbles and clouds will pulsate into dadaist trashness, filled with nostalgia and humor. Not to be missed on the night that marks 115 years since the “American Temperance crusader Carrie Nation began her campaign of vandalizing alcohol-serving establishments by destroying the inventory in a saloon in Kiowa, Kansas” (wiki).

Fête de la Musique, a global celebration of music on the summer solstice, comes to Big Night in Little Haiti this month on June 20 at the Little Haiti Cultural Center. The inspiration behind Fete, which began in Paris in 1982, is to welcome summer with free music. Prior to the main stage concert by popular young Haitian kompa group Gabel, there will be an open stage for the public to make music. Gabel began with a bang in 2006 – prestigious Kompa Magazine named the young Haitian group “New Band of the Year”. They have lived up to the promise – their fourth studio album will be released this June; they have 12 music videos, have played at two karnavals and are touring throughout the Caribbean, Europe and the US.

Gente de Zona (slang term for “people from the neighborhood”) is a Cuban reggaeton (cubaton) group founded by Alexander Delgado in 2000. The group combines this rhythm with more traditional forms of Cuban music in order to attract younger fans. Their album “Lo Mejor Que Suena Ahora Vol. 2,” featured hits like “Le Gustan los Artistas” and “Los Animales” that brought them global acclaim in Europe and the U.S. In March of 2013, Gente De Zona announced the departure of Jacob Forever from the group and the addition of Randy Malcom, ex-lead singer of la Charanga Habanera. Gente de Zona has recently performed in the past year at the Latin Billboard Awards, Latin Grammy Street Parties, and Nuestra Belleza Latina on Univision. The group is currently featured on the mega-hit, “Bailando” by Enrique Iglesias with Descemer Bueno, which has been #1 on the Latin Billboards Charts for the last two weeks.

During the summer, following the Marlins’ Saturday, 4:10 p.m. games in May and June, the team will offer complimentary postgame concert performances from acclaimed recording artists (Gente de Zona, B.o.B, Boyz II Men and Chino y Nacho) at the West Plaza of Marlins Park. Orchestra Miami performs “Masonic Mozart” at Miami’s Historic Scottish Rite Temple
The first in Orchestra Miami’s Discover Miami Through Music Series

Miami’s Scottish Rite Temple: You’ve driven by it a million times passing through downtown, marveled at its lovely & exotic Art Deco exterior, but have you actually been inside? Finally, here’s your opportunity with Orchestra Miami’s inaugural concert of the Discover Miami Through Music series, a series of concerts in Miami’s most interesting and historic landmarks.

The inaugural concert, entitled “Masonic Mozart” is an all-Mozart concert inside Miami’s iconic Scottish Rite Temple. One of history’s most celebrated Masons, Mozart wrote numerous pieces for Masonic Ritual, for his Masonic brothers or based on Masonic symbols. “Masonic Mozart” is your opportunity to hear some of this great music performed in the setting for which it was intended.

The program features Orchestra Miami’s principal clarinetist Richard Hancock in Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet, K. 622 and special guest Dr. Tony Boutté as the tenor soloist in Die Mauerfreude, a cantata for tenor and orchestra. The concert opens with the gorgeous Overture to Die Zauberflöte (the “Masonic”opera) and closes with Mozart’s greatest symphonic achievement, the “Jupiter” Symphony N. 41, K. 551 in C Major. The 39 musicians from Orchestra Miami will be led by Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi. Following the concert, Miami’s acclaimed historian Dr. Paul George will talk about the Scottish Rite building and the historic Lummus Park neighborhood.

By Michael R. Malone, The Children’s Trust

Before beginning his original spoken word piece for the Young Talent Big Dreams finals, David Woodward paused in front of the microphone and closed his eyes, seeming to disappear.

Then he opened his eyes and launched his emotional performance, a fusion of words and gestures that spoke of the frustration and sometimes fury of the many boys and young men in Woodward’s Little Havana neighborhood who seek to rise above their poverty and shatter the stereotypes that weigh against them.

For his originality and creativity, Woodward, a 16-year-old junior and one of the top writers in his AP English course at SLAM Miami Charter Middle/High School, was named the overall Grand Prize Winner of Young Talent Big Dreams. This year marked the fourth and most ambitious rendition of the countywide talent contest, coordinated by the Actor’s Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre and sponsored by The Children’s Trust.
The cadre of judges, all professional artists or art critics, chose Woodward over a host of amazingly talented young musicians, dancers, composers and wordsmiths performing in a range of categories, both individual and group. For the top prize, Woodward received $500 in cash and a free trip for two – air fare, hotel and passes – to attend the live American Idol finale in Los Angeles, CA, courtesy of WSVN CH7.
Woodward, who’s been rhyming, rapping and creating original poetry since elementary school, credited his English teacher, Crystal Espinosa, at SLAM for helping him craft his award-winning performance piece. With her guidance, he revised the piece more than twenty times, working steadily on it for more than a month.

“Though I like to write, I wasn’t much of a reader before. The experience of competing in YTBD really taught me about perfecting my writing craft,” said Woodward, nicknamed the “silent assassin” by his classmates for the riveting power and precision infused in his work.

Winners were chosen for each of the categories, and 27 acts competed in all in the finals held Saturday, May 3 at the Actor’s Playhouse. These contestants were selected from the hundreds that participated over the past four months in the total seven auditions held at venues around the county.

“Every year the talent gets better and better, and the dreams get bigger and bigger for this competition,” said Charles M. Auslander, president and CEO of The Children’s Trust, adding that “The Trust is dedicated to helping to encourage the dreams of the children of Miami-Dade County.

Throughout the finals night as he has at all the auditions, emcee Earl Maulding kept the audience caffeinated with his infectious good humor as he sang the high praises of the performers who were competing and those who auditioned over the past few months.
¨These kids are just beyond believing. For many of them this contest is the first time that they walk onto a stage for an audition, but to hear and see them – you’d never know it. Their talents – and courage – are just off the charts,” commented Maulding, who directs the Young Audiences Theatre at Actors’ Playhouse.

Individual first-place winners in each category received $200. Ysabella Reyes, a 10-year-old who studies dance at Dance Hall and who dreams of becoming a ballroom dancer and choreographer wooed judges with her Individual Dance performance. Abdias L. Armenteros, a 9th grade student at Miami Union Academy took top prize in Individual Musical Instrument with his spirited saxophone performance. In the relatively new category for Individual Original Composition, Javmar Perez-Contreras, a 14-year-old pianist who attends Pinecrest Preparatory Middle High School, won first prize in stiff competition.

Carolina Rivero, an 8th-grader at St. Thomas the Apostle, delivered a spirited rendition of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” to win Individual Vocal Pop/Rock/Rap. Judges awarded top prize for Individual Vocal Theatre/Jazz/Classical to Amanda Gonzalez-Piloto, a freshman vocalist at the New World School of the Arts, who delighted the audience with her version of “Taylor the Latte Boy.”

In Bands competition, One Love, comprised of five young musicians – Carina Ubinas, 15, Joshua Paulus-Rosenow, 15, Carlos Ubinas, 14, Michael Ubinas, 11, and Gabriela Ubinas, 9 – who’ve been performing together just a few months, took top prize. Each musician received $50. In Group Dance, Monica Delgado, an 8th grader at Coral Way K-8, and Anne Wright, an 8th grader at Westminister Christian School, won top honors and $100 each. Both are dancers with the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet. Imani Coker, 16, and Naya Schere, 17, won top honors for Group Musical Instrument for their viola duet. Both are musicians in Coral Reef Senior High’s Orchestra Magnet. The two also received $100 each.

All category winners received master classes taught by local professionals and opportunities to attend a range of professional performances over the coming year; a pair of subscriptions to the Actors’ Playhouse 2014-15 Mainstage Season; local restaurant certificates; and professional headshots for their portfolios from Alberto Romeu Photography. The Individual Dance Winner also received a full scholarship to the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet.

Judges for the finals performance included: David Arisco, artistic director at Actors’ Playhouse; Lynn Martinez, WSVN CH7 News Anchor; Mary Carmen Catoya, Principal Dancer, Miami City Ballet; Howard Cohen, Features Writer, The Miami Herald; Natalie Lewis-Schere, Co-Founder and Executive Director of PATH; and Joel Someillan, Award-winning musical producer of Nickelodeon’s Dora The Explorer and Go Diego Go! TV shows.

Early in the evening, Actors’ Playhouse executive producing director Barbara Stein welcomed local dignitaries and graciously thanked the many event sponsors. At the end of the night, the stage was filled with beaming contestants, purple Finalist medallions swinging at their necks. Stein’s welcome words still echoed in the confettied air.

“This has been the most amazing competition, one that inspires the dreams of so many and that we’re so glad to be a part of. Nobody’s leaving here tonight who’s not a first-class winner.

July 19th and 20th – South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center Black Box Theater
Contemporary Flamenco guitarist and composer from Spain Jose Luis Rodriquez performs his dynamic new project Resonancias. The project includes a live performance of original guitar and electronic compositions by Jose Luis Rodriguez , featuring special guest artist Gustavo Matamoros, Alex Jordan on second guitar, and movement interventions by Niurca Marquez that at once instigate, incite, threaten, and invite Rodriguez to step outside of his comfort zone on stage. These are enveloped in the artistry of filmmaker Carla Forte and the dramaturgy and scenic design of Guggenheim Fellowship Recipient Alexey Taran, which functions as a living installation within the work.

A todo color, (work in progress) a documentary film by Randy Valdes
July 11th and 12th – On.Stage Black.Box Theater at Miami Dade County Auditorium
This cutting-edge documentary, produced by fresh, new local media talent Randy Valdes, tells the story of how Cuban artists manage to disseminate their art and truths beyond the boundaries of Cuba. The piece explores the artists’ personal and creative journeys, how their influence defines the artistic language of the Cuban cultural Diaspora, and how each incorporates the influences of their newly adopted cultural environments into the ever-evolving phenomenon of world Cuban music.

This experimental interdisciplinary performance invites local collaborators into a dialogue that explores themes of displacement, immigration, trauma, disability, personal crises, and assimilation as a mirror of Miami itself. The piece exposes how artists process and divulge their most pressing personal issues in a game of theatrical lottery, while providing a commentary on life in this multicultural city vis-à-vis the process of creation, artistic and emotional survival, and aesthetic self-development within Miami’s diverse artistic community.

Life is a Song – Yisel Duque in Concert –
September 26th – The Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore

Yisel’s edgy yet delicate sounds are influenced by the musical worlds of Brazil’s Jobim, England’s Beatles, Cuba’s José Antonio Mendez, the classical music of Yo-Yo Ma, Alternative Rock’s Coldplay, Belgium’s Toots Thielemans, and Jazz great Ella Fitzgerald.

This year, Aqua Girl will host its first ever “aquaSOUNDS” fundraising concert to benefit Aqua Foundation’s LGBTQ Youth Homelessness Initiative. The concert will take place at Grand Central on Saturday, May 17th, just before the infamous Temptation dance party.

All bands featured in the concert are from South Florida and are connected to the local LGBTQ community. The local bands will warm up the crowd for headliner Beverly McClellan of NBC’s “The Voice” who will perform as the closing act. A soulful rock singer with honest lyrics and a raw sound, McClellan plays more than 10 instruments and has already released five independent albums since her appearance on the hit show.

The Aqua LGBTQ Youth Homelessness Initiative funds crucial services for the homeless LGBTQ youth population in Miami-Dade County. As much as 40% of the homeless youth population in Miami-Dade is LGBTQ. This means that compared to the general population, the LGBTQ community is vastly over-represented among the homeless youth population.

“AquaSOUNDS” is made possible through the generous support of Perennial Strategy Group and BB&T.

Records stores may continue to dwindle in number and vinyl may be going the way of polar ice caps, but that cannot stop the growing international phenomenon that is Record Store Day. This year, the wax aficionado holiday lands on April 19th and one of Miami’s top live music venues Grand Central will host an event to honor Miami’s great music mom and pop shops and chains past, as well as some of the more prominent acts to emerge from the area, including Nuclear Valdez, Charlie Pickett, Jim Camacho of The Goods and Forget the Name – all for a great cause.

“It’s ironic that as the number of records stores continues to fall, Record Store Day continues to gain more momentum,” says event co-organizer and music business mainstay Alex Jimenez. “I’m excited not only about continuing the legacy established by notable record stores like Peaches Music, Specs Music, Q Records, Yesterday & Today Records, Open Books & Records, Blue Note Records and others, but to help raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s disease and research.”

Jimenez was in part inspired by former Peaches executive and colleague Alan Jackowitz’s diagnosis and subsequent struggle with Parkinson’s.

Nuclear Valdez rose to regional and national acclaim in the late 80’s with the release of I Am I on Epic and the radio and MTV hit “Summer.” Axe man Charlie Pickett’s band The Eggs were hailed by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke as a “brawling-roots mix of Johnny Thunders, Sun Records and trailer park Lou Reed” and by R.E.M.’s Peter Buckas “one of the undiscovered giants of the late eighties.”

Singer / songwriter / playwright Jim Camacho first came to regional and national prominence with The Goods, who were signed to Polygram Records and were featured in the music doc Tom Dowd and the Language of Music. Forget the Name enjoyed a nine-year run during the late 80s and early 90s, developed a strong following in Miami, toured the east coast and released three full-length albums of material.

There will be a special music photography digital expo curated by yet another music insider, photographer and Dig Under Rock blog head Tony Landa. The works of Jill Khan, Mindy Hertzon, Karen Widen, Laura Kokus andTeajay Smith will be shown throughout the event.

A record collector’s “swap meet” will kick off the event with top dealers offering highly prized collectibles. “This sort of blows up the concept of the Saturday morning swap meet at an area hotel conference room bringing it into an environment that really suits it well,” states Jimenez. Interested record dealers please email alejim@aent.com to reserve your table now.

Performing since the age of 15, Danay formed part of the Havana Cultura series, collaborating with various artists throughout the years. She has performed in European cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and Istanbul, and in Latin America, Mexico, Panama and Colombia. In addition, the singer / songwriter released her first album Polvo de la Humedad in 2008, which was followed by her Havana Cultura EP in 2010.

The Nag Champayons are a largely improvisational collection of musicians drawing inspiration from African, Caribbean, hip-hop, rock and jazz influences. The band released a self-titled EP in 2012 that features the single “183rd Street Flea Market” with guest vocalist Itagui from Locos Por Juana. The Nags hold a floating residence at the visually ethereal Hollywood, FL venue Mystic Water Kava Bar called Psychedelic Jazz Practice. The group is currently working on their next release which will feature the beat box and rap stylings of Komakozie and the Afro-Cuban inspired vocals of Tomas Diaz from the Spam Allstars.

Ephniko Dialecto is a bilingual songwriter, DJ and emcee originally from Columbia and now residing in Miami. His style has been compared to Mos Def, the Orishas and Damian Marley. A self-described “hip-hop educator/researcher”, he does workshops with youth programs at area festivals, juvenile detention centers and schools.

The Aaron Lebos Reality jazz / rock foursome has reemerged with an eight-song collection of new music called Turning Point, a renewed energy for live performance and a discernible new sound. The band will be commemorating the occasion on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at The Stage Miami and will also be presenting the video for the first single from the set called “Screens”.

“We definitely found our sound with this new release,” says guitarist and composer Aaron Lebos. “This band is really excited about the new direction the music has taken and feel that this recording is a very accurate portrait of the group today.” ALR has been together since 2012 and is already locally known for uniquely fusing jazz, funk, rock, R&B, Latin and world music. They released their self-titled debut that same year.

Lebos is a versatile guitarist born and raised in Miami. He received his Bachelors degree from the University of Miami and a Masters from Florida International University – both in jazz performance. He developed much of his versatility playing gigs and recording in the diverse South Florida music scene and touring nationally. Lebos regularly performs with some of the biggest names in area including Nicole Henry, Tony Succar, the Spam Allstars and others.

Another standout track is called “Flux Capacitor,” a dance / indie rock / jazz hybrid. The collection will be available on CD and as a download on iTunes. ALR features Lebos on guitar, Eric England on bass, Jim Gasior on keyboards and Rodolfo Zuniga on drums. Learn more at www.AaronLebos.com.

Doors open at 9 p.m. at The Stage and admission to the event is $5 for 21 and over and $10 for those 18 to 20 (only the first 50 will be admitted). For more event information, visit www.TheStageMiami.com or call 305.576.9577.
