KCC Productions presents Jazz at MOCA featuring Vivian Sessoms
“A Powerhouse” (Quincy Jones)
Vivacious, vibrant, vigorous – all adjectives that describe the voice and performance of Vivian Sessoms. On Friday, April 24, you can experience this for yourself between 8 and 9:30 PM at North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art (“MOCA”) in a free performance of her special take on jazz and soul. Vivian, born and raised in Harlem, New York, was born with a love of music instilled in her as the daughter of two prominent musicians and niece of Nacy Wilson. Her mother was a former jingle and session singer, her father, a well-known flautist and percussionist who worked with James Brown and several other well-known musicians throughout his career.
Vivian began classically training her voice at the age of nine, and it wasn’t long before she was so well versed in her craft that she won a scholarship to the highly acclaimed Amas | Eubie Blake Repertory Company headed by the late Rosetta Lenoire. This was where she began training in theatre, dance and music, which eventually led her to a successful run in radio and television voiceovers. In fact, you’ve probably heard her, she was the soothing sound of a soprano in commercials that convinced you to purchase such products as Campbells Soup, Coke, Hershey’s and many more.
As a performer, Vivian has sung with many of the worlds most recognized artists: Stevie Wonder, Chris Botti, Cher, Christina Aguilera, Diddy, P!nk, Chaka Khan, Ke$ha, Rob Thomas, Patti Labelle, Patti Austin, Sinead O’Connor and numerous others. As a writer, Vivian has worked with just as many artists, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Towa Tei, Lalah Hathaway, Amel Larrieux, Junior Vazquez and David Morales.
In 2007, Vivian and partner Chris Parks released their debut CD entitled “Sunny One Day,” to critical acclaim. Billboard magazine referred to Vivian’s voice as “clear and exquisiteâ€, Uptown magazine called her voice “powerfulâ€, and Urban Network magazine called Sunny One Day “an impressive debut so polished and effortless sounding, it’s as if it bonds to your DNA and defies you to stop playing itâ€.
Vivian is currently putting the finishing touches on a follow up cd, her first jazz effort, entitled “Heart,” due out this summer.

Famed Drummer Brings Jazz from New York March 14
Two-time Grammy winner Will Calhoun brings his jazz project to the South Motors Jazz Series at Pinecrest Gardens March 14 at 8 PM. Will is promoting his critically acclaimed CD “Life In This World” (Motéma Music). “Life…” features such notables as Ron Carter, Donald Harrison, Wallace Roney, and John Benitez, supplementing the trio of Will, Marc Cary, and Charnett Moffett. “Life In This World is a spiritual title,” Calhoun says, “which to me just means the sonic world of my experiences. It’s Will Calhoun in the sense of what influences me and what inspires me, but aimed more towards a jazz audience.” Says Carol Banks Weber of examiner.com, “Will Calhoun’s latest breakthrough jazz album, “Life In This World,†has it all. It deserves more than five stars. It deserves a Grammy.”
He is currently working on a recording, to be released in the Fall of 2015, celebrating the music of Elvin Jones. The album will feature Sonny Fortune and other alumni of The Jazz Machine. In addition, he is a featured artist in Sibylle Szaggars Redford’s paean to the living Earth, “The Way of the Rain,” performed at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Also in the works is an exciting project from West Africa. Will is a new breed of ethnomusicologist, combining his ancestral research with many years of commercial success in jazz, rock, urban, alternative, ambient, and other musical forms of the world into a beautiful swirling expression of life.
Will Calhoun has composed, produced, and toured with Mick Jagger, Mos Def, Oumou Sangaré, Marcus Miller, and Wayne Shorter (on the Grammy-winning CD, High Life), Pharoah Sanders, The Rolling Stones, Lauryn Hill, Herb Alpert, Public Enemy, Paul Simon, Stanley Jordan, Jaron Lanier, and many more. He is an alumnus of the Sundance Composer Lab Program. He has recently broadened his artistic expression to film scores, photography, and a collection of artwork crafted from rhythm titled “AZA”. Having announced its colossal Phase One lineup back in January 2015, the World’s Premier Electronic Music Festival now unveils the second wave of talent set to perform at the seventeenth annual edition of Ultra Music Festival over Miami Music Week this March.
Receiving the biggest boost for Phase Two is Ultra Music Festival’s now-legendary Live Stage, which will be playing host to some of the most exciting live performers in the world from March 27-29, 2015. Gracing the Live Stage, and joining an already eye-watering batch of Phase One acts set to rock the iconic Klipsch Amphitheatre in just a few weeks time, will be phase 2 headliners including instrumental super group Big Gigantic, Canadian electro-funk duo Chromeo, masked man of mystery Claptone and Norwegian nu-disco extraordinaire Todd Terje, who will be making his long awaited Ultra debut!
Recently formed project Get Real (aka Chicago House legend Green Velvet and Dirtybird head honcho Claude Von Stroke) will be headlining Ultra’s newly conceived Resistance Stage on Saturday March 28, as two of the biggest names in house music make their collaborative worldwide festival debut and prepare to send the vast wave of Ultranauts joining this year’s Resistance into a tech infused frenzy.
Additionally, and in a big move for the South Florida festival giant, techno kingpin and phase 2 headliner Seth Troxler is now confirmed to perform in the mighty Carl Cox & Friends Megastructure on Saturday 28, while the mammoth Ultra Worldwide stage prepares to welcome the return of another phase 2 headliner and Ultra firm favorite, Boys Noize and Miami local Cedric Gervais.
Ultra Music Festival will also be welcoming an official OWSLA stage for the very first time this year, led by some of the biggest names in bass, including Wiwek, Salva, Jack Beats, AC Slater and many more. Space Ibiza (named DJ Mag’s #1 club in the world for 2014) will be making its return for the fourth consecutive year to Ultra on Sunday 29, alongside Armin Van Buuren’s globally famed ASOT arena, which will be seeing off proceedings in the Megastructure for a finale to remember, while Stage 7 sees a total trance makeover on Saturday, with the likes of Orjan Nilsen, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Solarstone, Jochen Miller, Sied Van Riel and many more all now confirmed.
As if this weren’t enough, adding to the already huge first wave of talent set to grace this year’s newly designed Main Stage will be Las Vegas based progressive house pioneer 3LAU, Swedish super duo Cazzette, trance icon Dash Berlin and the man behind one of the biggest records of this year, which was used in as the official soundtrack to the Ultra Miami Phase One Trailer (Treasured Soul), Michael Calfan.

Marco Fusi, the Italian violist par excellence presents a program of the 21st-century Italian music for viola and for viola and cello with the Miami-based Jason Calloway.
Fusi believes that music unveils “something really mysterious and unpredictable†via a performer. Most of the programmed works are a result of personal collaboration with the composer: “Working together is the best way to learn about music, about yourself and about other points of view,†claims Fusi, pointing to the importance of expanding one’s musical horizons. Fusi is excited about musing the personal with professional. It is, in fact, the first time he will perform with the cellist Jason Calloway—his long-time friend and the new music string champion in Miami.
The program includes several US premieres and a World premiere by Luciano Chessa, that engages some curious “seasonal†items. Fusi is excited about sharing a diverse sample of contemporary Italian music with the South Florida audiences, offering a rare aural look “through a window the contemporary Italian soundscape.â€
About the artist
Marco Fusi, violinist, violist and composer studied with Dimitrios Polisoidis, Ernst Kovacic and Jeanne-Marie Conquer. Marco has performed with conductors and soloists including Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, Peter Eötvös , Beat Furrer, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gustav Kuhn, Jürg Wyttenbach, Jean Deroyer, and Marco Angius. He has premiered new works by composers Castiglioni, Eötvös, Sciarrino, Vacchi, and Cattaneo, among others. Marco has had the opportunity to perform concerts in renowned halls such as the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, KKL Konzertsaal in Lucerne, Beyond Baroque in Los Angeles, Experimental Intermedia in NYC, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, and the Béla Bartók Concert Hall in Budapest. Marco has collaborated with Ensemble Algoritmo (Rome), Interface (Frankfurt), Proton (Bern), Linea (Strasbourg), Phoenix (Basel), l’Arsenale (Treviso), MotoPerpetuo (NYC), Ecce (Boston), and Handwerk (Köln). His complete recording of John Cage’s Freeman Etudes was released by Stradivarius; he has been invited to present this project, giving concerts, masterclasses and lectures at University of Southern California, Arizona State University, and the Milan Conservatory. Marco was a member of Lucerne Festival Academy from 2007 to 2012, under the artistic and musical direction of Pierre Boulez.

At this info + jam session event, we will be joined by RBMA alumni Mickey DeGrande IV (Cosmic Chronic/RBMA Toyko 2014) and Jneiro Jarel (JJ DOOM/Dr. Who Dat/RBMA Capetown 2003), as well as RBMA ambassadors Diego Martinelli and Jsin Jimenez, all who will be on hand to talk about the programs available to potential academy applicants, answer questions and more.

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, together with presenting sponsor, The Children’s Trust, announces the fifth annual launch of Young Talent Big Dreams, the most widespread local FREE youth talent contest in Miami-Dade. Kids between the ages of 8-17 will compete for prizes ranging from performing arts scholarships to cash awards and performance opportunities, to tickets to local attractions and theatres. This year, courtesy of WSVN CH7, the Grand Prize winner will receive a free trip – airfare, hotel and free passes for two – to attend the live American Idol finale. The countywide competition will begin on Feb. 8th, with preliminary auditions that will take place through April 12th at four local theatres. The competition will feature a total of six individual categories including; pop/rock/rap vocals, musical theatre/jazz standards/classical vocals, dance, musical instrument, original spoken word and original vocal and/or instrumental composition, and categories of six or less members including; dance, musical instrumental and band/vocal group. Participation is free of charge and limited to residents of Miami-Dade County.
The countywide competition concludes with semifinals on April 25th and 26th and finals on May 2nd at the Miracle Theatre. Seven preliminary auditions will take place in diverse locations throughout Miami-Dade, including the Miracle Theatre, John A. Ferguson Senior High School, South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center and the Joseph Caleb Center. Participants may compete in one individual and one group category only, and those who pre-register will be given priority audition times. Performers may pre-register online and will be seen before non-registered performers. ABOUT THE SHOW
We are excited to announce the artists that will be exhibiting their artwork in the 3rd Annual “Cloud 9: Let Yourself Be Seen” Art + Music Show and we hope you will join us. This year’s tagline was inspired by the curator, Dana DellaCamera’s own journey allowing herself to “Be Seen” and no longer hide or be stopped by fear of judgment by others or herself.
“Cloud 9: Let Yourself Be Seen” Art and Music Show is a platform for artists to “Be Seen”, be vulnerable, and share their gifts, talents and message with the world. Cloud 9 is a world where you allow yourself to dream, trust, develop, risk, expand, take action and create without limitations! When we listen to our hearts and trust our inner selves we experience a burst of energy and discover pure joy.
All of the art that will be exhibited will be accompanied with a short paragraph from the artist as to why the pieces put them on “cloud 9”. The intention is for all who attend the exhibition to participate, leave inspired, empowered and alive.

What: The Virginia Key Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance is taking place on Virginia Key in Miami featuring Donna the Buffalo, Rubblebucket, Marco Benevento, Jim Lauderdale, Swear and Shake, Afrobeta, AJ Ghent, Big Mean Sound Machine, Telekenetic Walrus, Danay Suarez, the Spam Allstars, Suenalo, Locos Por Juana, Elastic Bond, Lanzallamas, Electric Piquete and more.
The festival kicked off with beach camping and workshops during the all-new “Culture Camp” that began February 15th. The 12 Nights Electronics and Music series welcomes Jarek Kapuscinski, an innovative intermedia composer.
Jarek Kapuscinski is an intermedia composer and pianist whose work has been presented at New York’s MOMA; ZKM in Karlsruhe; Centre Pompidou in Paris; and Reina Sofia Museum in Marid, among others. He has received awards at the UNESCO Film sur l’Art festival in Paris, VideoArt Festival Locarno, and FNCNM in Montréal. He was first trained as a pianist and composer at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and expanded into multimedia during studies at the University of California, San Diego (1992-1997). Currently, he is Assistant Professor of composition and intermedia at Stanford University.

Kapuscinski is a musician, but his music is audiovisual. “It is made of sounds and images and more importantly with their relationship over time. I am interested in the emergent in-between – the intermedia,†says Kapuscinski. His pieces indeed emerge from the formalization of the elemental and the pure. “The piece is finished not when there is nothing more that I can add but rather, when there is nothing left to be removed. “ He believes in a thoughtful process of elimination of non-essential elements, aspiring to achieve a transparent and spacious form, that can generate complex emotional response. It is through the synthesis of complexity and simplicity that the stepping stone narratives (made of simple, haiku-like moments) mediate a rich experience. Kapuscinski is not shy to express positive feelings of joy, love, wholeness, goodness and transcendence. “I embrace everyday, familiar emotions and musical language that invokes them. There is richness and profoundness to be found in the common and seemingly simple.â€

The program presents a retrospective of Kapuscinski’s works. It stretches from Mondrian Variations, an early work that defined my interest in composing with sounds and images both conceived simultaneously, “painted on a single canvas†to Where is Chopin a recent fascination with micro-expressions in faces of people from around the world as they listen to music. The first one was a result of rather solitary process while the latter involved travel to 12 different countries and private one on one sessions with over 150 people. Each of the works has a rich story of its making. Having no space (or time) for that, I can probably say just a few words about the creative interests that unite them all.

The quartet’s members Nicole Miglis, Trayer Tryon, Paul Giese & Zach Tetreault played together in various formations as far back as middle school, but it took until adulthood and 2012 for them to become Hundred Waters. Living under one roof meant the band had a communal mentality, yet each maintained their own distinct projects, borrowing here and there from each other. It was in interpreting a friends’ music together that they discovered the power of their combination, and they quickly fell to work reorienting their lives around an album. The music they found was a beautiful blend of contradictions, mournful yet colorful, introverted yet aware, and brought the tradition of songwriting to a strange future. Initially released by their local label Elestial Sound, their self-titled debut soon became seen as the sound of Florida, drawing loose comparisons to Stereolab, Four Tet, and Bjork. Soon it attracted the most unlikely of label bosses, Skrillex, who signed the band to his OWSLA label that same year and gave the album a full-scale release, with remixes by Araab Muzik, Star Slinger, and TokiMonsta. Since then the band has taken its live show around the world, touring with artists such as Grimes, Julia Holter, Alt-J & the XX.

In May 2010, Peter Hook, legendary bassist of both Joy Division and later New Order, decided to honour the outstanding work of his first band and the undoubted genius of the late Ian Curtis by giving people the opportunity to hear both of Joy Division’s masterpiece albums, ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’, live and in their entireties. Backed by his new band The Light, Hooky first played ‘Unknown Pleasures’ at the Factory club in Manchester on May 18th & 19th 2010 in order to celebrate the life of Ian – one stand alone sold out night quickly became two, and due to phenomenal worldwide demand, Hooky then began taking the show on the road with headline gigs & major festival appearances throughout Europe, a full tour of Australia & New Zealand as well as the band’s first tour of the United States in December which culminated in Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell appearing live with the lads in Los Angeles to sing ‘Transmission’.

Come celebrate Carnaval in Rio at Pinecrest Gardens, with Batuke Samba Funk, Miami’s finest Brazilian band, presented by KCC Productions. The roots of Carnaval trace back to the ancient Romans and Greeks who celebrated the rites of spring. Across Europe, including France, Spain and Portugal, people annually gave thanks by throwing parties, wearing masks and dancing in the streets. Such traditions were carried over to the New World. Carnival has come a long way since it was brought to Rio, having become one of the biggest events in the World. Tonight it comes to Pinecrest!
If you like Funk, Afro Beat, and Brazilian music, this is the right band for you. Batuke is a mix of Brazilian rhythms like Samba and Afro-Brazilian, with the raw 70’s Funk, creating a groovy atmosphere wherever the seven-piece band plays. Batuke Samba Funk was created by Brazilian bass player, composer, and producer Diogo Brown in 2009. Diogo studied at the Conservatory of Rio de Janeiro, and is one of the most accomplished and recognized Brazilian musicians in South Florida. He has played alongside artists such as Ricky Martin, Chris Delano, Nouvele Vague, Caludia Leitte, Beatriz Luengo, Don Omar, and Youtel (Orixas), among others. The core of the band consists of five Brazilian musicians and adds two American musicians on the horns. You can expect a hand-clapping, foot-stomping good time worthy of the celebration. The program will also feature a samba dancer in full Carnaval costume to brighten the proceedings still further!
The show is part of the South Motors Jazz Series, and will be in Pinecrest’s Banyan Bowl, 11000 SW 57th Ave. (Red Road), starting at 8 PM. Tickets are $25 and $30, available at pinecrestgardens.org.

The thrilling University of Miami-based Unbound Improv Ensemble emerged from an initiative of the multi-instrumentalist Matthew Taylor, percussionist Tyson Voigt and vocalist Jennifer Voigt in October, 2013. Since then, the group has performed around the city, including the Acoustica21 concert last April. While the Unbound players are superbly trained to perform the “classical†music, they also possess incredible curiosity to explore musical soundscapes beyond those prescribed in the scores. “As musicians we are always striving to expand our sensibilities and remain open to new paths,†explains Taylor.
The performance is only a part of it. It is through the focused listening to each other that new spontaneous musical experience transpire. Their virtuosity and artistry enables them to devour an hour with the most engaging and surprising musical acrobatics, often moving in the space and using imaginative performance techniques. You may need to travel far beyond the state border to hear a high caliber improvised acoustic music such as that performed by the Unbound Improv Ensemble. “It is important that more voices are heard in music community of Miami,†says Taylor about offering the city this new musical experience. May these acoustic alchemists conjure an event that will long resonate in the ears of the Miami music lovers!

In addition to Matisyahu, the Barefoot Concert Series will feature Bushwood, a six-piece reggae rock band, whose high energy and signature style have been igniting stages all across South Florida. Known for their ability to perfectly blend funk and reggae, this band loves to perform, and knows how to put on a great show. The event will take place beachside complete with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Monsieur Zonzon will provide additional musical entertainment in form of a DJ set. Guest are invited to enjoy refreshing cocktails and culinary treats from a specialty menu curated by the executive chef Phillipe Ruiz, who helms Sole on the Ocean Resort and Spa’s new restaurant Fresh American Bistro.

Reggae sensation Matisyahu, will take center stage at Sole on the Ocean Sunday, February 15, 2015 for a live unplugged performance alongside Bushwood Band and more this coming President’s Day weekend. No stranger to live performances, Matisyahu, headlines the latest installment of Sole on the Ocean’s Barefoot Concert Series.
Matisyahu first rose to fame in 2005, quickly becoming known for blending traditional Jewish themes with Reggae, rock and hip hop beat-boxing sounds. Since his debut, Matisyahu has received rave reviews from both Rock n’ Roll and Reggae fans alike. Most recently, he was named Top Reggae Artist of the Year by Billboard.
