Orno, by four-time James Beard Award nominee, Chef Niven Patel, will host its ninth iteration of Library Libations, an ongoing dinner series that features a multi-course tasting, and rare pours from some of the industry’s most prestigious wine brands. History Fort Lauderdale, celebrating its 60th year of stewardship of our community’s past, has announced Ted Drum and the Drum, Clark and Cox families as honorees for its 26th annual History Makers fundraiser set for Thursday, November 10, from 6 – 8 p.m. This yearly special event commends individuals and companies who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are on sale, now.

For over 70 years, Fort Lauderdale native Ted Drum and his extended family have made significant contributions to the development of the City of Fort Lauderdale through political leadership and prosperous marine, hospitality, and real estate ventures.

Ted Drum was born in Fort Lauderdale in 1938, and Bob Cox arrived in 1946 aboard an 85-foot deep-draft motorsailer. Looking for dockage that would accommodate the boat led him to a naval station on the Intracoastal near 17th Street. A series of fortuitous events, perseverance and engineering expertise on Bob’s part led to his establishment of what would become the Lauderdale Marina.

The Drum and Cox families merged in the early ‘60s when Ted met and married Carol Clark, Bob Cox’s daughter. Soon thereafter, Ted left for Vietnam and returned home seven years later as a decorated combat company commander and captain. The family grew the marina property to include homes for Drum Realty, which Ted’s father Harlan established in 1951, and the 15th Street Fisheries restaurant, established with Carol’s brothers John and Macdonald Clark. One might thing that Bob Cox would have had enough to occupy his time during these years with the marina and other business enterprises. However, seeing a need for leadership in Fort Lauderdale he found time to serve on the city commission and as mayor of Fort Lauderdale from 1986 until 1991.

During this time, Ted and Carol, while raising two children, grew Drum Realty and established a reputation for themselves, and their business, for integrity and fair dealing. Their children, Lorrie Drum Roschman and Kelly Drum continue that reputation as current owners of the family businesses. While Carol sadly passed away in 2011, Ted has remained active in real estate in Fort Lauderdale and Drum Realty continues, today, as does Lauderdale Marina and 15th Street Fisheries, which operate under the umbrella of The Shipyard. These enterprises remain family businesses with Ted’s son, Kelly, as president of the Shipyard and of 15th Street Fisheries and Scott Clark, Bob Cox’s grandson, serving as president of Lauderdale Marina. Currently, eight other Drum, Clark, and Cox family members are involved at The Shipyard. The Drum family expanded in 2015, when Ted married Kathy Molinet. Since then, Ted and Kathy, while remaining busy in their careers, carve out ample time to enjoy their shared passion of boating and travel.

WHO/WHAT: Thanks to Puerto Rican famed Chef José Mendín, America has National Mofongo Day; an entire day to celebrate the beloved Puerto Rican delight made of plantain and often stuffed with a variety of delicious goodies. On Saturday, September 24, just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, Mendín and Colombian culinary brother-in-arms, Chef Cesar Zapata, are teaming up and throwing down.

Together, and as part of Phuc Yea’s six-year anniversary, the Chefs, along with fellow boricua-owner Ani Meinhold, are hosting the Second Annual National Mofongo Day extravaganza at their Michelin-recognized MiMo eatery Phuc Yea, which is known for breaking cultural boundaries with its Viet-Latin mash-ups.

What to expect at this ticketed event? A bevy of all-you-can-eat mofongo bites from both talented chefs, a Welcome Snaiquiri (snack-sized daiquiri cocktail), and DJ Safe Stadick spinning vinyl and old school salsa classics. Think vinyl, la Fania, lots of rum, Hector Lavoe, mofongo and a lively phuc-ing vibe. Just Phuc Yea being Phuc Yea…

Guests can also take advantage of specialty craft cocktails priced at $10 featuring fan favorites such as the Coco Chanel, made with Bly white rum, lime juice, sugar, apricot liquor and orange blossom; an Old Cuban Named Gio, prepared with Havana Club Classico, muddled herbage, angostura bitters and cava; and the Cuba Libre, mixed with Havana Club Classico, Coca-Cola and lime.

“As a professional chef who is deeply proud of my heritage, I will do anything I can to spotlight Puerto Rican food and culture,” says Mendín. “I’m so happy to be hosting another ‘National Mofongo Day’ party and happier to be doing it with Cesar, a chef I love and respect.”

Tickets to the event which include unlimited mofongo bites and a welcome cocktail are priced at $20 per person and can be pre-purchased. Tickets will also be available day of at the door for $25 per person.

Get ready to indulge! Taste at the Track returns to Gulfstream Park this summer with a tantalizing array of food options between three different themed events. This fan favorite series combines the best of two worlds: food and drink and horse racing. Taking place in the third floor Flamingo Room overlooking the racetrack, guests can indulge in all-you-can-eat food and drink stations while taking in theexcitement and energy of high stakes horse racing. The series includes Burgers & Brews on August 6; Tacos & Tequila on August 27 and BBQ & Bourbon on September 24. Beginning September 29 at 6PM, people can take their chances working their way through four terrifyingly, haunted experiences inside an abandoned department store at Miami International Mall. The following haunted experiences have been completely re-done to maximize their scare factor:

• The Silent Mall – Shhh….This is where Misshhhell will unleash her own level of “hell”. Try and stay quiet, if you dare.
• DrownTown – The undead are overflowing at this abandoned town seeking their revenge. Be quick about it, or risk becoming a permanent resident.
• Insanitorium – If by now your nerves are shot, don’t worry. Former patients have taken over the treatment of nervous breakdowns. Do check in. No health insurance required.
• Scare X Studios – Cleared of “almost” all paranormal activity, this immersive experience is where gaming and imagination takes center stage.

For 20 years, Miami International Mall has served as the ideal spot for this spooky, month-long adventure. Those fun-filled nights only get better on the HOH midway where a ticket to the haunted experiences also gives family and friends access to unlimited carnival rides and games. It’s also where overindulgence is highly encouraged given the large assortment of treats and carnival foods. Just be sure to rally enough courage to ride The Fireball Rollercoaster, which is a first this year.

Tickets are currently on sale for House of Horror Haunted Carnival at Miami International Mall. Doors open on September 29 and remain open every Tuesday through Sunday, all the way to Monday, October 31. HOH plans to incorporate special themed nights, including an adult Costume Contest on Halloween night, so be sure to follow them on social media for those drop dates!

South Florida’s highly anticipated South Beach Seafood Festival is back for its 10th anniversary with a celebration that is gearing up to be the biggest one yet. The festival features special programming, including a $10,000 chef prize and popular live music guests, that will raise the bar for one of the country’s leading seafood events. Taking place from Wednesday, October 19 through Saturday, October 22, the four-day festival is a curated culinary showcase that couples South Florida’s bounty of seafood with the region’s most notable chefs and restaurants. The South Beach Seafood Festival consists of four separate ticketed events taking place throughout the week. The festival begins on Wednesday, October 19th with “An Evening at Joe’s Stone Crab.” Next up, “Crabs, Slabs & Cabs,” takes place the following evening and offers a formal sit-down, five-course dinner highlighting ‘Surf n’ Turf’ reimagined by some of the Magic City’s leading chefs. The event is hosted by GOYA Foods’ Executive Chef Fernando Desa and includes participation from celebrated restaurateur and Pubbelly Sushi partner José Mendín; Fiola Miami’s Executive Chef Danny Ganem; and Meat Market Executive Chef and Owner Sean Brasel, among others. On Friday evening, the gloves come off as 16 of Miami’s top chefs go head-to-head in eight competitive seafood rounds during the annually sold out “Chef Showdown,” coined the ultimate beach bash on South Beach. To commemorate the festival’s 10-year anniversary, one participating chef with the most points of the night will take home a grand prize of $10,000. This fan favorite series combines the best of two worlds: food and drink and horse racing. As Fall approaches, it’s time to grab a stein and put on your lederhosen with the return of Wynwood’s Octoberfest, presented by Samuel Adams, taking place from September 9 to 11. Returning for its 12th year, Wynwood’s Octoberfest will transform the Wynwood Marketplace into a traditional Bavarian Bierhaus, turning Wynwood into Germany’s largest festival for the weekend. Uchi Miami, the stylish Wynwood restaurant known for its non-traditional take on Japanese cuisine, is kicking off a summer dinner series — a one-night-only, collaborative multi-course experience — on July 19 with Raheem Sealey of Drinking Pig BBQ, a locally loved food truck serving up some of the best barbecue in Miami. Both Sealey and Uchi’s experienced chefs will prepare a decadent multi-course meal at $150 per person, with drink pairings an additional $60 per person. Uchi is devoted to partnering with local chefs throughout the Miami community to bring guests a new, collaborative experience to enjoy this season. The summer dinner series will be an ongoing event with more special guests to be announced throughout the summer. Sealey will launch the collaborative series, followed by chefs from the modern Vietnamese restaurant Phuc Yea on August 16, with more to come.
