Meet featured artist Elizabeth Sutton and see her solo show, Just Breathe, in the Schwartz-Jacobs Family Gallery at the Miami Beach JCC. The preview will be on Tuesday, December 3 from 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM. The exhibition will be on display from December 3, 2019 through January 24, 2020.

Many works of art betray the hand of the artist. Elizabeth Sutton’s work, however, tells of the mind of the artist. Her compositional signature is a strong undercurrent of mathematical proportions and algorithmic color placement. Nothing is accidental; everything is intuitive. And with a nod to pop and a dash of kitsch, Sutton creates compositions that are focused on enlivening spaces and uplifting spirits. Sutton believes that her compositions find engaging the viewer with organizational complexity while simultaneously entertaining with whimsy.

Elizabeth Sutton is a millennial “mom-preneur” and visual artist who has taken the nouveau arts scene by storm. In 2016, Elizabeth was selected to participate in the NYDesigns incubator program, exhibited at both the A­ffordable Art Fair & Hamptons Designer Showhouse, and was featured by Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing,” as well as The New York Post. In 2018, Sutton partnered with Joe & The Juice in locations across New York City, in support of The Art of Elysium. Elizabeth’s tile collection for Tilebar is a two-time award collection, from Architectural Digest and HD Expo. Elizabeth recently released her first leather collection, announced exclusive partnerships with the luxury resort, Eden Rock – St Barths and Janovic, the NYC-based Paint & Decorating Center along with launching her lifestyle blog.

‘Tis the season to give back! For more than 38 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade has been selling Christmas trees and wreaths to help bring holiday cheer into South Florida homes. This year the tradition continues at the Hank Kline Club tree lot.

The trees, gorgeous Fraser firs, hand-selected in North Carolina by Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s President Alex Rodriguez-Roig, stand 5-feet to 14-feet tall with a starting price of $55. Plain and hand-decorated wreaths are also available starting at $35.

Proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s many positive programs, including after school programs, homework assistance, computer training, social skills, dance, arts and crafts, professional mentoring, and summer and athletic programs, for area children who need them the most.

To kick off the 2019 holiday season, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade will host a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony at the Hank Kline Club tree lot on Monday, Nov. 25 at 5 p.m. Miami dignitaries, Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade board members and representatives and Santa Claus himself will attend to celebrate a holly jolly holiday season.

These public programs are part of Where the Oceans Meet, an exhibition of modern and contemporary art that resonates with the pioneering thought of two Caribbean writers, Lydia Cabrera and Édouard Glissant. The international group of 40 artists and collectives in the exhibition considers notions of shifting and porous borders—geographic, national, cultural, social, racial, ethnic, and linguistic—and how crossing borders has shaped our world. Where the Oceans Meet opened on May 26 and will be on view through January 12, 2020.

Preceding the world-renowned art festival Art Basel, Miami Jewish Health, South Florida’s largest nonprofit care center, is hosting its own.

MJ Basel is Miami Jewish Health’s fifth annual art exhibition, in which residents and staff showcase their works of art alongside pieces done by some of South Florida’s best local artists. Members of the South Florida community are invited to enjoy food, drinks and live music while experiencing the talents of our residents and other members of the community.

Art is not only a form of self-expression and storytelling, but it also acts as a form of therapy. Miami Jewish Health residents take part in art classes each day, and some who suffer from Alzheimer’s and dementia use art as a form of relaxation therapy. In an effort to support these classes, 20% of all art sales at MJ Basel go directly to Miami Jewish Health’s art programs.

Local South Florida artists participating include Serge Toussaint, Erika King and more.

Museum of Art and Design at MDC presents Black Power Naps/Siestas Negras, an immersive, multi-sensory installation offering rest as a form of reparations. Created by artists Navild Acosta and Fannie Sosa, the installation invites visitors to lounge on a variety of embellished beds, replete with gauzy canopies, serene lighting, therapeutic sound vibrations, and other restorative props. On December 4, the artists will activate the installation with Guided Nap Meditations and DJ soundscapes from bed.

Following its success in Atlanta, Nickelodeon is giving kids and families in Miami the chance to see, feel and get doused in its iconic green goo at Slime City Miami, an immersive experience dedicated to all things slime. The enchantment of the holidays is bringing many celebrations to Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, including the kick-off of the storied home and estate’s 100th anniversary. The Friday, Dec. 6 Holiday Magic Soirée, the official 100th anniversary kick-off event, will be followed by a special Holiday Magic Week of events to continue the celebration.

The Dec. 6 Holiday Magic Soiree, a fully catered affair by A Alexander Event Catering, will kick off the centennial celebration in style with live entertainment by electric violinist Jared Burnett and electric harpist Deanna Defrancesco. A full bar, holiday music and plenty of festive décor will welcome guests. Designer-decorated trees, wreaths and centerpieces will adorn Bonnet House during the event, and will be on sale throughout the week.

The Holiday Magic Soirée will take place from 6:30–9:30 p.m. A VIP reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. and include an early viewing of the trees, wreaths and centerpieces displayed throughout the house, along with a fully catered champagne reception in the citrus courtyard, and 100th anniversary commemorative holiday ornament. The cost per person for the Soirée is $75; the cost for the Soirée and VIP Reception is $100 per person. The 2018 event hosted a sellout crowd of 500 people. During this campaign, those who donate $1,000 to Bonnet House will receive two tickets to the Centennial Soirée presented by The Haller Foundation on April 25, 2020. Returning to Surfside for their second holiday season, an international group of renowned classical musicians will gather to perform a series of three intimate concerts for both South Florida visitors and residents. Named after the founder’s late father, who was a part-time Surfside resident and music lover, The Glenn Douglas Winter Chamber Music Festival will run from Monday December 30, 2019, to Friday, January 3, 2020. The festival will feature uniquely themed concerts with pieces ranging from Haydn and Beethoven to Prokofiev and Janacek, all performed at the highest caliber.

Douglas will be joined by violinist Geneva Lewis, violist Celia Hatton, violist Alexandra Simpson and cellist Adam Satinsky. The three-concert series will kick off with “Life Reflections” on Monday, December 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour and conclude with “The Brilliance of Youth” at the same venue on Wednesday, January 3, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person for each event, including a complimentary glass of champagne.

The tea-time matinee, “Folklore,” will be held on Thursday, January 2, at 2:30 p.m. at the Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club. Tickets are $35 per person and include tea or coffee.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will shine a spotlight on the significant contributions of local Native American artists during Native American Heritage Month in November. “Patchwork Mosaic: An Indigenous Gathering of Seminole Masterworks” featuring a retrospective of contemporary and traditional fine art from Elgin Jumper, Jessica Osceola, Gordon Oliver Wareham, Brian Zepeda, Pedro Zepeda, Erica Deitz, Samuel Tommie, Tia Blais-Billie, Jacqueline Osceola and Stephanie Hall (collaboratively curated by the artists along with Tara Chadwick, Jimmy Osceola, and Dante Blais-Billie) will run from November 15 – January 12 at the New River Inn building of History Fort Lauderdale, an Art Basel partner cultural institution.

“Patchwork Mosaic: An Indigenous Gathering of Seminole Masterworks” is one of several insightful experiences at History Fort Lauderdale. Permanent exhibits include the new “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of narratives and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts a variety of yearly multicultural exhibits highlighting African American, Caribbean, Latinx and women artists sharing their views of history.

Last year, History Fort Lauderdale, in conjunction with The Florida Humanities Council, launched Florida Stories’ “Walk Fort Lauderdale,” the first FREE Broward County walking tour app (available through the App Store and Google Play). The tour, featuring archival photos, renderings and cultural narratives, allows visitors to learn about the colorful history of Fort Lauderdale at their own pace at 12 significant locations including the New River and Bryan Homes on the History Fort Lauderdale Campus and the Bryan/Abreu building (201 SW 2nd St.).

In his new, socially-charged “Plan(T)” art project, local environmental artist Xavier Cortada is embarking on a public education campaign to urge every resident across Miami-Dade County to plant a saltwater-tolerant mangrove seedling and elevation-marked white flag in their yard to start preparing for the future of sea-level rise. On Saturday, 11/23, The National Kidney Foundation of Florida and Miami Heat legend and NBA Hall of Famer, Alonzo Mourning and the Mourning Family Foundation (MFF), will host the 2019 Fort Lauderdale Kidney Walk, the nation’s largest event to raise awareness of kidney disease and funds to support lifesaving programs for patients, their families, and those at risk.

The Institute of Financial Wellness for the Arts (IFWA) is excited to announce its partnership with Faena Theater with the “Rock the Mic” live karaoke series at Faena’s 3,000 square-foot old-Hollywood style theater.

Dolphin Mall will celebrate the holidays by creating a winter wonderland complete with a nightly snowfall that is powered by children waving magic wands. This annual tradition returns Wednesday, November 27 and will continue through Sunday, January 5, 2020.
Each night, 30 minutes before snowfall, magicians under the age of 12 will receive, while supplies last, a magic wand to help unleash the snowstorm and create a glistening winter wonderland.

Santa’s Flight Academy, a one-of-a-kind, immersive experience that culminates with a special visit with Santa, will return to Dolphin Mall from November 7 through December 24 from 12 p.m. – 10 p.m. The holiday attraction merges the physical and digital to provide a personalized adventure for every child.
Cadets are fitted with a virtual flight suit and will partner up with a helpful elf to inspect and power Santa’s sleigh and navigate the best course for the big day. The experience culminates with a snowfall dance party and, of course, time with Santa who will greet his crew members personally by name.

Katie Sandler, the founder of The Impact Retreat, has a background in mental health counseling, psychology, and mindfulness. She was also a psychiatric research assistant at Johns Hopkins, where she focused on purpose in life and its overall impact on our health and quality of living. She found that being altruistic, giving back to others, is one of the best forms of purpose. Therefore, here we are, connecting with one another so we can support our community.

This workshop will cover the basics of mental health, stress, anxiety, and depression. We will discuss ways we cope and the impact that particular practices like yoga and meditation have on our wellbeing. It will also introduce you to mindfulness and effective coping mechanisms. Local political, business, community and sports leaders will show-off their passion for fashion and philanthropy during The Salvation Army of Broward County’s seventh annual Community Ambassadors Breakfast “friend”raiser and fashion show on Friday, November 8, at 7:30 a.m. at the nonprofit organization’s headquarters at 100 SW 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. This year’s “runway” models sporting fashionable finds from The Salvation Army of Broward Thrift Stores include City of Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Ben Sorensen, his wife Anna, and their two children, Artist George Gadson, Traci Miller, senior vice president of business development for Miller Construction and Valerie Vegliote, community volunteer and beauty consultant. The Florida Panthers will also be honored with this year’s Ginny Miller Community Ambassador Award for their immeasurable support of The Salvation Army’s disaster assistance and holiday programs.

The Salvation Army of Broward County’s Community Ambassadors serve as advocates for the charitable organization. Ambassadors are the first to know about disaster recovery efforts and how to assist vulnerable populations within Broward County and beyond. There are no required membership fees, meetings or committees. Volunteer applicants need only have a willingness to help impact the lives of disadvantaged families and a dedication to making Broward County the best place to live for our citizens.

The theme of this first elrow’art event is called Kaos Garden. We will witness the reinterpretation of Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights,” by the DJ and producer Paco Osuna and the multidisciplinary artist Okuda San Miguel. It is a collaboration between the two conceived as a trip through a night that will represent the dynamics of the historic triptych in which we see scenes of paradise and hell. In Kaos Garden, a unique hell will be the starting point. Darkness will represent the night until reaching ecstasy. The paradise will be associated with fun and hedonism with the light of the first hours of the morning in such a mystical and idyllic setting inside a beautifully built structure located at Miami’s exquisite Island Gardens. “We’re so excited and proud of elrow’Art and can’t wait to bring it to Art Basel, a perfect destination for art lovers and music fans to experience this unique multisensory collaboration,” says Michael Julian, Special Advisor to elrow.

Paco Osuna will be the sonic curator and spiritual guide who will select the rhythms that will draw the sound landscape to mark the route from hell to Eden. Okuda’s unique iconographic language of multicolored geometric structures and patterns that have made him one of the world’s most recognizable street artists of today will be on full display, right down to elrow’s signature confetti. He will recreate the surreal, chaotic and multisensory scene of a garden that will unleash emotions and human free will.

The Salvation Army of Broward County is looking for several good men and women to b-“ring” in the cheer and charity this holiday season! South Florida residents with a positive outlook and an affinity for philanthropy and fun are encouraged to apply for a seasonal bell ringer position with The Salvation Army of Broward County on Wednesday, October 30, from 1 – 3 p.m., at the Salvation Army’s headquarters at 100 SW 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Approximately 125 positions need to be filled.

Synonymous with the Christmas season, “ringing the bell” at a Salvation Army Red Kettle has been a tradition since 1895. It’s not just about ringing a bell, however. All proceeds from the Kettle stay in Broward County and support the Salvation Army’s feeding, shelter and social service programs. Last year, the nonprofit organization raised more than $120,000 for the Greater Fort Lauderdale community.

Applicants are encouraged to be creative through song, dance or other spirited presentations that demonstrate enthusiasm and a willingness to help others. Bell Ringers will be selected for employment for the holiday period of November 15 – December 24.

The Red Kettle Bell Ringers program is only part of the nonprofit organization’s holiday efforts to help those less fortunate. This November, the organization will, again, host free Thanksgiving meals in partnership with The Cheesecake Factory for hundreds of families. Last year’s Angel Tree Program provided the opportunity to distribute more than 3,000 toys to families with diminished resources.

Shops at Merrick Park will present its 16th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa’s Arrival, sponsored by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, on Thursday, November 21, at 6 p.m. One of the largest tree lighting ceremonies and holiday celebrations in South Florida, the event will include the 50’ tree-lighting, live entertainment, interactive activities, retailer pop-up stations and the highly anticipated appearance by Santa Claus.

MIAMI, FL – The Aero Modelers of Perrine (AMPS) is exited to celebrate the 2019 edition of AeroFest on November 8 & 9. The event brings together pilots and builders of radio-control airplanes to show and fly these giant-scale models of planes from all eras of aviation. Caja Caliente, home to the original Cuban tacos, is launching brunch with an incredible lineup set to reinvigorate the brunch scene in Coral Gables this Saturday, October 26th and Sunday October 27th.

Straight from Mika’s kitchen you can expect over 7 new menu items. Some of the brunch menu items will include Mika’s Disco Volador Pancakes consisting of 4 guava swirled pancakes filled with whipped cream cheese & pressed into an old school disco volador stacked on top of each other, perfectly topped with leche condensada and a never before seen homemade guava reduction. Beny Moré’s Benedict, named after the famous Cuban jazz singer, is an organic poached egg with a signature mojo hollandaise, served on an english muffin. Lastly, the Salmon Tartare tostadas will feature two homemade tostadas topped with salmon tartare, avocado, caja aioli and a poached egg. If that doesn’t have your mouth watering maybe $20 bottomless mimosas made with in house freshly squeezed orange juice will.

More features on the brunch menu include the Shakshuka a lo Cubano which is yucca hash, sofrito, black beans, Miami smokers bacon & baked eggs served in a cast iron skillet with ZTB toast. Bougie bean toast which features black bean mash, feta, sofrito, fried egg and everything bagel topping on ZTB Sourdough multigrain bread.

Toro Toro, the Pan-Latin steakhouse located inside the InterContinental in Downtown Miami, will be starting the holiday season early this year with a ticketed Friendsgiving dinner hosted and prepared by the acclaimed Chef/Owner Richard Sandoval, as well as a specialty Friendsgiving menu that will be offered for the whole month of November.

Taking place on Thursday, November 14 at 7PM, the one-night-only, 30-person dinner will transform Toro Toro’s striking Matador Room into an intimate dining experience that will serve as an exclusive celebration of the season. Priced at $75 per person (excluding tax and gratuity), tickets will include a welcome cocktail in the restaurant’s lounge upon arrival, followed by a 3-course family-style meal with respective wine pairings. In the spirit of Friendsgiving and connecting with each other, Chef Sandoval, who will be preparing the meal for the evening, will interact with and explain the dishes to guests as the table is served.

The menu for the event will begin with appetizers including Apple & Carrot Curry Soup; Baby Beet Salad with baby kale, green beans and Stracciatella; Pork Belly with corn bread and carrots; and Kabocha Squash with mushrooms, truffle aioli and parmigiano. For the main course, Chef Sandoval will be preparing a traditional Roasted Turkey with a Pan-Latin twist as it will be served with sweet potato bravas, jalapeño honey butter and kimchi Brussels sprouts. Additional entrées will include Achiote Chicken with arroz con gandules, piquillo peppers, tostones and cilantro sauce; and Pork Pernil with mashed yuca, chicharron and red onion mojo. A sweet ending to the night will feature desserts such as Chocolate Caramel Pecan Pie and Maduros Cream Pie.

In addition to the special event, Toro Toro will also be offering Chef Sandoval’s specialty Friendsgiving menu as a private dining option for the entire month of November. Priced at $75 per person and available for parties of 14 or more, it is a great alternative for groups who prefer to sit back, socialize and spend quality time with friends over an exquisite meal, without the time and effort of preparation, cooking and cleaning. For this experience, room rental fees are waived and groups have the options of hosting the dinner in Table 40, Toro Toro’s unique in-kitchen dining room; Matador Room, the restaurant’s large private dining room; or in any section of the restaurant desired.

On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, Toro Toro will offer a buffet-style “Thanksgiving con sabor Latino” from 11AM until 8PM. Priced at $65 for adults; $30 for children 6 to 12 years old; and free for children under 5, the buffet will feature assorted salads, charcuterie, fresh seafood, a live carving station, hot items and a decadent dessert display.
