Swim through tropical landscapes with turtles, dive beneath the ice with penguins and forage in the forest with a family of bears — experience life as animals do in a new traveling exhibition opening at Zoo Miami.

“National Geographic Crittercam: The World Through Animal Eyes,” a 6,000-square-foot traveling exhibition developed by the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C., will run from January 18 through May 5, 2012 at Zoo Miami. Crittercam, invented by National Geographic marine biologist Greg Marshall, is a scientific video- and data-gathering tool safely worn by wild animals, offering researchers insights into animal behavior and clues to protecting animals and the world we share.

Through interactive displays, firsthand footage and evocative environments, visitors to the exhibit can explore the many stories and animals that are part of the science and adventure of Crittercam. The exhibit focuses on Crittercam’s deployment on seals and sea lions, sharks, sea turtles, whales, penguins, bears and lions.

In the seals and sea lions section, a series of viewing and listening stations show how these animals communicate, hunt, feed, care for their young and attract mates. Visitors then move to the sharks section for a close-up view of an 18-foot-long great white shark model and displays that illustrate the hunting and migratory behaviors of several shark species. A shark fin model features the latest way of attaching the Crittercam — via a fin clamp. As visitors feel the rough sandpaper that keeps the clamp in place, they can watch a video depicting daring deployments, from early tether systems to a researcher deploying the fin clamp by hand.

The sea turtles section offers insights into how turtles search for mates, different foraging behaviors and how the animals avoid becoming a meal themselves. From atop a life-size model of a leatherback, children and adults can watch point-of-view footage from a female leatherback, while other displays show life as seen by loggerhead and hawksbill turtles.

In the whales section, visitors enter into a chamber of bubbles to see the cooperative behavior of humpbacks known as bubble net or lunge feeding. Other highlights include an up-close look at the toothed whales of Hawaii and footage of the mysterious “unicorn of the sea,” the narwhal.

In the penguin pod, exhibition-goers enter the world of Penguin Ranch, the main research site of the Crittercam team in Antarctica, to investigate a penguin’s life beneath the ice and learn about research with penguins trained to wear Crittercam. Visitors can squeeze into an observation tube to watch a video of penguins soaring underwater, while youngsters can crawl through a tunnel and pop up in a bubble to come face-to-face with a penguin wearing a working Crittercam. On exiting the tunnel, children can view footage of themselves from the penguin’s perspective.

The terrestrial version of Crittercam is the newest development in the program. In the land animals section of the exhibition, visitors learn about the trial-and-error process of developing the land-based technology, from deployments on domestic dogs and cats to partnering with animal rehabilitation centers. Visitors also learn about the unique challenges of studying land animals, from penetrating the dense forest habitat of the grizzly bear to getting the Crittercam collar to pass the lion cub “chew toy” test. Point-of-view footage shows a young Alaskan bear cub napping, feeding and traveling with its family, as well as a lioness hunting, tending to her cubs and sharing a meal with them.

The final section of the exhibition focuses on Crittercam technology, with information on how it works and the original inspiration that led to its development. Visitors can design their own Crittercams using Build-a-Cam, touch a Crittercam model and examine deployment methods such as an adhesive patch, penguin harness and suction cup. Youngsters can try their hand at a Crittercam puzzle. There is also a “What’s New” kiosk that features recent deployments and findings on species such as the tree kangaroo and Humboldt squid.

From January 18-May 5, 2013, Crittercam will be open at Zoo Miami’s Dr. Wilde’s World from 10 am to 5 pm daily. Crittercam is included with Zoo admission. Zoo Miami is located at 12400 SW 152 street; Miami, FL 33177. General Zoo Admission is: $15.95 plus tax, per adult and $11.95 plus tax, per child (3-12). Hours are 9:30 am – 5:30 pm; ticket booths close at 4 pm. Parking is free. Annual pass holders and children under 2 are also free. Florida Grand Opera looks to expand the reach of opera with “Unexpected Opera in Unexpected Places.” Designed to bring less-known works to unique venues throughout South Florida in an effort to expose new audiences to opera, with the support of a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Knights Arts Challenge. The first installment of this new initiative will bring operatic productions to the Midtown neighborhood for the first time with a tango double-bill featuring Robert Xavier Rodriguez’s Tango and Ástor Piazzolla’s María de Buenos Aires, held at the popular Midtown music venue The Stage on March 21-24, 2013.

TANGO
A product of the highly-acclaimed, living American composer Robert Xavier Rodriguez, Tango is a one-act comic concert operetta composed for a single tenor, sung by Young Artist Matthew Newlin, and a chamber ensemble. Designed to present three consecutive scenes without pause, the action follows the protagonist at the height of the tango craze in 1913 as he embodies different characters to convey the varied perceptions of this seductive and polarizing dance.

This work will be sung in English, using the composer’s own translation of the libretto.

MARIA DE BUENOS AIRES
The surreal plot of María de Buenos Aires is filled with elements of magical realism, a Latin American movement that thins the veil between fantasy and reality. This is the tale of ill-fated María, who was said to be born “on a day when God was drunk.” Living in the poor suburbs of Buenos Aires, María is seduced by the sounds of tango, becoming a streetwalker, and falling victim to a tragic death. The audience then follows María’s Shadow as it walks the city’s Underground, which has become her hell.

This work is being presented in a slightly abridged version that runs for 70 minutes and sung in Spanish.

Let’s face it, most of us can’t hang with the De La Cruz’s and Rubells of the world. We’re resigned to putting up our kids’ work on the fridge or buying some not-horrible mass produced Target art to decorate our homes.

NO MORE!!

Come out to Yo Space and aside from having a good time playing ping pong on our custom table, smoking hookah, and/or hobnobbing, check out some great works by local artists.

We’ll have a fresh batch of visiting artists in the house along with our Resident Artists, selling everything from original works, to limited edition prints, and merchandise (Apparel, accessories, and more). The best part? We’re capping the selling price at $250 per item. You can walk away with an original piece of art to brighten up your place or to offer as an amazing unique gift for less than the price of an iPod.
(Disclaimer: Resident Artists may have more expensive work in their studios)

Described as “an open source entrepreneurship (OSE) project”, you’ll get the opportunity to meet with their team and find out exactly what they’re all about. They’ll be bringing one of their fellow entrepreneurs with them, JoJo Tea, who will be serving free tea as well as selling merch.

Los Chamos is going to be out front serving up their delicious Venezuelan food (arepas, empanadas, etc) so come hungry and leave happy (I don’t know which fast food chain I just took that from but hopefully they won’t notice/mind).

Touching Miami with Love the non-profit that has been empowering the families of Overtown since 1995 will have their Art That Feeds custom painted plates for sale as well. $40 per plate provides them the funds they need to get 35 kids hot nutritious meals after school.

There’s also going to be a ping pong tournament starting at 3pm the same day so feel free to come out and take a stab at winning a trophy: https://www.facebook.com/events/500642286625807

Artist Statement

“In the studio, I surround myself with canvases of all sizes. I put mounds of paint on my big glass palette, pick up a painting knife and create seemingly random, textured surfaces on the canvas. The layers and layers of paint become the foundation for the painting’s background. Next comes opaque color; under layers of paint “peek through”, suggesting something hidden and offering depth and visual interest. The shapes inspire the subject; they always become the painting that they are supposed to become. I paint what I love: adult beverages, the musical instruments of jazz, strong coffee. I paint in a bold impressionistic style. I love thick, juicy paint, loose shapes, the smell of the studio. I paint because it fills me with a sense of wellbeing, of belonging, of total “be in the moment” consciousness. I am never closer to myself than at those moments.”

Oxenberg Fine Art cordially invites you to a special exhibition and events:

Cesar Santos (Cuban-American, b. 1982)
“The Artist’s Accomplice”
Paintings and Monumental Studies

On view from Jan. 17
Opening Reception Jan. 24, 7-10:00PM
Meet the Artist Luncheon Feb. 9, 1-3:00PM

The exhibition will be presented following Santos’ sold out presentation of works at the “World of Art Showcase” in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Juxtaposing both classical and modern styles within one painting, Santos’ works have been viewed by international audiences- from the Annigoni Museum in Italy and the Beijing Museum in China, to Chelsea, New York. Santos’ solo exhibitions include: “Paisajes y Retratos (Landscapes and Portraits)” in the National Gallery in San Jose, Costa Rica, “Syncretism” at the Eleanor Ettinger Chelsea Gallery in New York and “New Impressions” at the Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, among many others. Additionally, Santos is influenced by the Renaissance, masters of the nineteenth century and Modernism. With superb technique, he infuses a harmony between the natural and the conceptual to create works that are provocative and dramatic.

Santos has received numerous accolades, including first place in a Metropolitan Museum of Art competition. His work has been exhibited throughout the U.S., Europe and Latin America, including the Frost Art Museum in Miami, the Villa Bardini Museum in Italy and the National Gallery in Costa Rica.

In this premiere solo exhibition, Santos will focus on the influence of his studies in Florence, Italy under an apprentice of Pietro Annigoni (b. 1910-1988) who was active in the innovative “Modern Painters of Reality” movement. In addition to Santos’ noteworthy paintings and respective studies, a mannequin will also be on view, representative of the mannequin in Annigoni’s works which signified the human condition in the modern age; Santos rescues Annigoni’s concept of the mannequin and gives it a new life in the twenty-first century.

MonteRosa “Vivo En Tu Amor” CD Release Party
MonteRosa Vivo En Tu Amor CD Release Party
MonteRosa returns with his third full length production titled “Vivo En Tu Amor”, a fully charged Pop/Rock gem in which all tracks were written and produced by MonteRosa himself.
Following his first two acclaimed and successful albums (Monte*Rosa & 12 Historias En 3 Tonos) which generated hits that topped radio and video charts, placement in multiple internationally transmitted television shows (“Spain…On The Road Again” and Telemundo Networks’ highly rated “La Reina Del Sur”) and independent award winning motion pictures (“Entre Nos”) “Vivo En Tu Amor” is chock full of songs that is destined to bring this Colombian born bilingual singer/songwriter a broader reach.
Vivo En Tu Amor brings the unique Pop/Alternative Rock sound mixed with Latin rhythms and powerful lyrics that symbolize MonteRosa. This production also includes three tracks in English (a not surprising follow-up since his debut album included a popular track in English) “Kitchen”, “Long Way Home” and “Hate Me”, each one a representation of the multi-genre appeal that MonteRosa brings no matter what language they are performed.
MonteRosa’s music is about people, his experiences, his feelings and most importantly what life is all about. Lyrics that inspire; make you reflect and think, accompanied by music that will make the hairs on your back stand and get your butt off the chair, that is MonteRosa and this is Vivo En Tu Amor.
Please visit:http://www.monterosamusic.com/musica to listen to the promotional audio clips from “Vivo En Tu Amor” and his previous productions.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Rose realized she had the gift of singing at a very early age.

Everyone from her mother’s side was a musician. She is the great-grand daughter of the conductor and composer CUPERTINO DE MENEZES and grand daughter of the guitar player and composer MANUEL DE MENEZES. Cupertino, also a flutist, was a band member of a “choro” group led by Callado Junior and Chiquinha Gonzaga, two of the most prominent musicians from this era. Manuel was partner – in music, adventures and “Bohemia – of the most important Brazilian composer in the early 30’s – Noel Rosa.

She started singing professionally with the OCTETO RIO ORCHESTRA performing jn the musically wealthy nightclub scene of Rio. She studied vocal technique with Graciela di Salerno, Nancy Miranda and Suely Mesquita. She also studied theory and ear training at the Instituto Vila Lobos and Centro de Instrução Musical Ian Guest.

Rose graduated with a degree in Portuguese and Literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. As a student, she was involved in various theatrical productions with the group “A QUEM INTERESSA.”

Rose Max performed extensively as a soloist with the vocal group AEQUALE under the direction of acclaimed-musical director ANDRÉ PROTÁSIO. Gaining interest and respect locally, she started working with a number of different bands. One of her best experiences was performing at “CLUBE DO SAMBA” (Samba Club) where she had a chance to learn with some of the big names of Brazilian music, such as Maestro Licinho, Neco, Antonio Carlos Tourinho, João Nogueira, and Roberto Ribeiro. She also started working as a session singer, recording jingles and background vocals, which led to the opportunity of backing up some of Brazil’ s most renowned singers.

Rose moved to Miami in October of 1993, where she has been continuing to grow and develop musically, and by keeping a constant performance schedule, she has become highly recognized in the Brazilian, Hispanic and American communities. She won the BRAZILIAN PRESS AWARD for the “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA” in 1997, 1998 and 2001.

“Funk cruises through the Caribbean picking up Afro sounds from Cuba and Puerto Rico. Reggae meets rock in a head-on collision. Jazz and electro hook up for a sidewalk makeout session. Hip-hop seems to hum from the very pavement, and R&B drifts in on the night wind. Suenalo reaches to far-flung corners and retrieves all these, takes them and mashing them together, marrying them—disparate players melded into a somehow harmonious blend. It defies logic that such diverse influences can find balance at the deft hands of one band. And yet they do.
It’s the result of a 10-year process of compromise and of growth between some of South Florida’s most talented musicians, who come together and share an ideal: that music should move their audience. Suenalo’s roster is stacked, with nine fulltime members boasting chops to rival anyone anywhere. Their lineup is a who’s who of brilliant musicians who have not only made their immovable imprint on Miami’s local music scene, but well beyond.”

With a run of songs extending from the 1950s into the 21st century, Jones has had a whopping 143 Top 40 country hits and is frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer. He was a co-writer on his first chart hit, 1955’s “Why Baby Why,” and in the ‘60s recorded hundreds of songs including the number one classics “Tender Years,” “She Thinks I Still Care,” “Walk Through This World With Me” as well as more ephemeral fare like “Love Bug.”

Jones paired up with producer Billy Sherrill in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and their work together exemplified the lusciously string-drenched style known as “country-politan.” In the years that followed, he racked up hit after iconic hit, including “A Good Year for the Roses,” “The Grand Tour,” “I Always Get Lucky With You” and “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will).” One 1980s smash in particular, “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” became widely regarded as the greatest country single of all time.

He has received the four highest honors that can be granted to anyone in his line of work, starting with his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992. A decade later, the president bestowed the National Medal of Arts upon him, and he was saluted by the Kennedy Center Honors in 2008. In early 2012, Jones was presented another top honor as he received the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Approximately 56 years after being named the Most Promising New Country Vocalist of 1956, Jones still lives out that promise with a regular touring routine. Audiences flock to hear the voice that is country’s most indescribable as well as, by acclamation, its finest.

Red is strong and confident. Red is exciting and sexy. Red is the color of life. MANO Fine Art celebrates the color red with an exhibition that is imbued with the cultural relevance of the color red. Twelve artists celebrate the spectacular and awe-inspiring color with contemporary interpretations. In some works it is used literally to represent things that are naturally red, in others it embodies a metaphor. However, it is the underlying emotional qualities of the color itself that dominates the extent of the exhibition which includes mix medium, painting, sculpture and a live demonstration of body art.

Participating Artists include: Eva Avila, Luis Berros, Toa Castellanos, Chenco, Daniel Garcia, Patricia Gomez, Antonio Guerrero, Josepo, Monique Lassooij, MANO, George Rodez and Wilson.

The show will be open Saturday, January 19 from 7-10 pm, during the Bird Road Art Walk or by appointment through February 2.

MANO Fine Art is located at 4225 SW 75 Ave, Miami 33155 in the Bird Road Art District. For additional information please contact 305.467.6819 or visit www.manofineart.com.

Here’s a quick breakdown of our THIRD official “kickstART” soiree coming back on 1/13/13 by popular demand.

(Think indoor artwalk meets urban bazaar).

We have 2 amazingly talented artists going head to head in a live art battle for 2 hours! (The amazing Ken Nytburn and Tony Surphman will be our battle artists for this edition). If you’ve never seen artists go at it on a very large piece of masonite, then this is your chance to check it out. The line work, and immediate improvisation that happens within a 2 hour time frame can be intense to watch. 3 lines can become machine guns, 1 twisted shape becomes the outline of a melting world a la Dali… it is awesome to just sit back with a beer/cocktail and watch.

A handful of large TVs, and a sweet projector screen showcasing young/untapped photog work, performance art, maybe a music video by Michael M in there too, and some “B-Boy” battles on screen…just to keep it funky.

A litter of “pop-up shops” where local artists can hock their latest creations; moderately priced canvas work, chic toy designs, one-of-a-kind sneaker remixes, even some fresh underground couture for clients willing to wear and show $upport to new, independent, color-loving artistes. If you like something, you can buy it… that simple.

Invitees from local galleries, scenesters, business owners, boutique managers, all of my friends, maybe a blogger or 5, some paparazzi to keep us on our toes, and YOU!

For the art fanatics on a budget, we are having an hour worth of free vodka cocktails, when you send us your RSVP. Send your name and your guests names in a quick email to Charllie@ChalkMiami.com, and make sure to put “kickstART” in the subject line.

We are totally stoked! Things are really coming together, and we have no one to thank but you guys! We are beyond grateful, and blessed. Think of this event as our way of taking the love you show us day to day, and paying it forward to fresh talent without much needed Miami connections. We are still open to ideas, and there are 4 slots available for “pop-up stores”. Please feel free to LMK if there is something you’d like to see at this event that we are missing! Thank you. See you 1/13/13

Kemetic Yoga is unique because it is the indigenous system that was developed in Africa. Thus Kemetic Yoga is a vast ocean of wisdom that was originally created to lead human beings to a realization that goes beyond the material expression of matter. What is meant by this is that the teachings are to lead a human person to a state of awakening that is referred to as the Nehast. The word literally means to awaken, thus the implication being to awaken to ones true nature, pure Divinity, beyond objectification.

(Starting January 12th, 2013)
It is known that it should take a minimum of 2 months for a person to be accostummed to a new way of living. You will be signing up for a 6-8 week course with your first class being FREE.

What is Kemetic Yoga
Kemetic Yogaâ„¢ is the ancient Egyptian system of Yoga enlightenment based upon the practices of physical movements combined with controlled deep breathing and meditation. Kemetic Yoga emerges from the one of the oldest known civilizations, which is ancient Egypt properly called Kemet in Northeastern Africa. Kemetic Yogaâ„¢ was developed by studying, translating and interpreting the commonly called hieroglyphic texts of Kemet (ancient Egypt) and the images of Yogic postures that are clearly pictured on the walls of the Kemetic temples.

Yoga is the Practice of Binding Individual Consciousness with Universal Consciousness
In the Kemetic teachings, this process of yoga is called Smai Tawi which means UNION OF THE TWO LANDS, an explanation of the higher and lower nature within the human entity. It shows how every human being is composed of a higher nature and a lower nature. The practice of Smai Tawi is to unite the lower with the higher; in effect, the same understanding comes through from the word yoga.

January Grand Opening for Barezzito South Beach
Finally an Establishment in Miami Beach that is Open Late, Healthy and Provides an Entertaining Environment – The Perfect Pedigree
Barezzito South Beach will open its entrance the week of January 17th, 2013 as an entertaining blend of sushi, bar and music elements, creating an atmosphere of stimulating modishness. The establishment’s Latin influence and fresh ingredients, with an Asian flare infused food and mixology creates a nourishing environment at Barezzito South Beach turning into a classy party every night.

Positioned in the new Boulan Shops at Collins Park on the legendary Collins Avenue in South Beach Miami, FL across from the Setai and W Hotel. The doors will always be open for both locals and visitors alike in this lavish 4,200 sq. ft. of space. Whether selecting from an outdoor or indoor ambiance, anyone can appreciate the prominent deco structure, artistic lighting of blue hues, warm red décor and Ébano finished wood floors of Barezzito South Beach.

Hailing from Mexico, Grupo Impluza has done it again, as this will be the group’s 50th establishment opened in eight years and its first in the United States. Omar Quesada and Oscar Webber own Grupo Impulza, and have chosen Miami’s local, Antar Sosa, to lead the successful string of restaurants into South Beach. Sosa has ten years of service industry experience and anticipates opening future establishments in South Florida and Nationally with dissimilar design and cuisine.

“Barezzito will be so different than what is going on here in South Beach. There are very expensive places or places that have poor entertainment and poor food, too. Placing our focus on ingredients as fresh and healthy such as sushi and tapas, along with having live music and DJs every day of the week, there will always be something happening where you know you can enjoy all aspects at any time of the day.”

Barezzito South Beach will integrate daily specials and happy hours for those working in the area, as well as for visitors in Miami. From noodles to ceviche, bottles to cocktails, DJ to live music and sushi to sashimi, Barezzito South Beach is projected to be a distinguished entertainment based restaurant venue open late for a salubrious taste.

One of country music’s giants, George Jones, is bringing his unparalleled voice to The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, February 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, December 13, 2012.

Tickets start at $70* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

JamActive has partnered with the Little Warrior Project and has decided to donate ALL PROCEEDS made from beer sales. The goal of the Little Warrior Project is to provide military children with the tools they need to improve morale, welfare and overall quality of life

In addition to being a part of an awesome and unique racing experience, all participants will receive a sweet Finisher’s medal (that doubles as a bottle opener…no, really), the equivalent of over two beers and a Tap ‘N’ Run t-shirt to commemorate your amazing accomplishment.
