Inspired by Carlos Castaneda’s Tales of Power
Music by Michael Colgrass
Adapted and Directed by Carson Kievman
Virtual Set Design by Sean McClelland
Musician: Robert Chumbley – Piano

Don Juan concludes the instruction of Castaneda with his most powerful and mysterious lesson in the sorcerer’s art — a dazzling series of visions that are at once an initiation and a deeply moving farewell.“

“If you could only choose to read one of Carlos’ books, this has to be the one.”

“In this astonishing work, Carlos Castaneda at last completes the long journey into the world of sorcery that began with his now-legendary meeting with don Juan. Drawn back by the knowledge that the sorcerer’s task has not been completed, Castaneda returns to plumb the final, awesome secrets of the sorcerer’s explanation of the world-to learn, in don Juan’s world and his own, the last lesson of a unique and arduous apprenticeship.”

Caligula A High Definition Ballet 4/20/11

Festival Film Night
April 20 at 7:30 PM
Miami Beach Cinematheque, Historic City Hall
1130 Washington Avenue, First Floor

Caligula: A High Definition Ballet Presented in collaboration with Emerging Pictures
From the Paris Ballet, Paris, France, Composed by Antonio Vivaldi, Choreographed by Nicolas Le Riche. Caligula is Danseur Étoile Nicolas Le Riche’s first choreography for the Ballet de l’Opéra National de Paris, and is one of the most interesting and experimental productions in years. Intrigued by the complex and troubling personality of the Roman emperor, the choreographer evokes the torments of a frail man capable of loving the moon and idolizing his horse, a man impassioned by theatre and constantly playing a role himself. Nicolas Le Riche overturns clichés and embarks upon an intimate exploration of a rich and complex personality. Built in the style of Racine’s tragedy, the ballet is structured in five acts, three scenes with four pantomime interludes. The story conforms to the rule of the three units of time, place and action. Accompanied by Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, which illustrates the irremediable passage of time, the dance, in all its depth and energy, translates the poetry and the violence inherent in a life consumed at lightning speed by excess.

The screening of Caligula is preceded by a discussion on the French style of ballet with Arnold Quintane, former Principal Dancer, Miami City Ballet

On Saturday, April 23, Brotherly Love Productions and Def Owl Presents are putting two of South Florida’s favorite fusion acts – The Heavy Pets and Aquaphonics – on the same stage for the first time. Kicking off the night with their signature “Aquaboogie Sound,” the three-piece electro-soul outfit, Aquaphonics, will play their cult hits ‘Waiting for It’ and ‘Spooky Beats’ while also debuting several newer tunes. Then Florida’s favorite festival darlings, The Heavy Pets, will keep the party going late into the night with their distinct style of jam-fusion that blends rhythm & blues, jazz-funk and reggae with homegrown rock & roll.

Aquaphonics: Aquaphonics is a uniquely funky electro-soul indie band that have quickly gaining steam in their native South Florida. Derived from friends and jam sessions, Aquaphonics has boasted several different members and worn different skins, yet to this day retains its original, liquid, “Aquaboogie Sound.” The band is comprised of founding members, Jessiah Weston (drums) and Alan Martinki (keys), who have been melding their music since 2000, along with dynamic guitarist Steve Elmore. Their edgy grooves and inspired song writing continues evolving and has recently earned them spots supporting Perpetual Groove and The New Mastersounds and a set at Bear Creek Music & Arts Festival. www.aquaphonicsband.com

The Heavy Pets: The Heavy Pets (THP) are an American band whose contagious vibe blends rhythm and blues, jazz-funk and reggae fusion with homegrown rock and roll. Called “a living, breathing, force of nature” by Dan Sweeny of Relix magazine, THP are known for powerhouse performances spiked with hot electric licks and multi-climactic instrumental solos, as well as for their masterful acoustic acumen. In 2007, the group became an instant Sirius radio sensation with the release of their acclaimed double-disc debut album, Whale, driven by hit tracks “Operation of Flight” and “Sleep.” Major festival darlings, THP have taken the stage at Bonaroo, moe.down, Langerado, New Orleans Backbeat Jazzfest, All Good, Wakarusa and their namesake PetZoo, a two-day, multi-band festival that draws hordes of Pets devotees to Bucks County, PA, to feast on the headliners’ live alchemy.www.theheavypets.com

eMERGE 2nd Annual Fashion Trade Show 10/15/11

2nd Annual Fashion Trade Show to Showcase Emerging Designers
Saturday, October 15, 2011
Zadok Art Gallery
2534 North Miami Avenue
Miami, FL 33127
Website.

eMERGE Trade Show announces their 2nd annual fashion trade show after a successful show in April 2010. One of the most sought after trade shows for emerging designers of streetwear, contemporary, designer and accessory brands in the marketplace.

eMERGE Trade Show is proud to present its 2nd annual event which will take place in sunny Miami, FL once again, on Saturday, October 15, 2011. As the barometer continues to rise for eMERGE, the event will take place at Zadok Art Gallery, located in the Wynwood Arts District. The perfect setting where an artist can display their work and a buyer can find its muse.

Clothing companies travelled from around the world from as far as Canada and London because they believed in the eMERGE vision. Many brands that attended last year are anxiously waiting for the 2011 show, in addition to many newcomers. A larger and overall better trade show will take place this Fall and eMERGE welcomes all exhibitors, buyers and sponsors to join them in Miami.

eMERGE is an innovative fashion trade show for upcoming and emerging brands, to showcase their collections to the best boutiques and retailers. Most conventional trade shows do not focus their attention on independent companies that are yearning for exposure in the fashion market. eMERGE is here to assist these brands in growing their business to become the next big “IT” FACTOR. Brands attending eMERGE are breaking barriers and aren’t afraid to take risks to be a recognizable force in the market, and therefore, they will….”ARISE AND CONQUER”

Tanteo Naturally-Infused Artisan Tequilas

“What are your thoughts on 80-proof, choco-infused tequila with hints of jalapeno? That it’s ass water? We were right there with you-until we maned up and took a slug. Awesome! Sweet, spicy and chocolaty good. It confirms the Tijuana truism that cocoa and tequila always mix well.”
Maxim Magazine September 2010

Tanteo tequila takes pure blanco tequila from 100% Weber blue agave and then infuses it with jalapeno, chocolate or tropical fruit extracts.

o Tanteo Jalapeno Tequila $44.99
o Tanteo Chocolate Tequila $44.99
o Tanteo Tropical Tequila $44.99

Flavored tequila was previously prohibited by the CRT, but in 2006 the rules surrounding the infusion of tequilas with various flavors was relaxed allowing for the production of these drinks. The fact that the CRT have relaxed their laws shouldn’t be indication that people can do what the hell they want with tequila, and Tanteo takes a great first step and the results are a high quality product that is both delicious and still respects the tequila in the process.

Please join us this Saturday April 16th from 2-5 pm at our South Beach location, 1328 Alton Road, for a celebration of modern invention and traditional artisan methods. And of course, to drink some Tequila!

This year, the festival will screen films from over ten European countries including France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Israel and others, which are traditionally shown during opening and closing night.

About the film programming: During the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, ACID (Association for the Distribution of Independent Cinema) presented a selection of 9 acclaimed international full-length films including Into Our Hands, Cuchillo De Palo, Donoma, Fix Me, Flowers of Evil, Chicks, Pursuit, Robert Mitchum is Dead and The Drifter. In partnership with 35 festivals, ACID presents movies in France (Paris, La Rochelle, Lussas, Pau, Belfort) as well as abroad (Montreal, Bratislava, Tübingen, Linz, Prague, Lisbonne, Pesaro) and now Miami.

Roamnce In A Can also embraces Miami’s cultural arts by giving back to the community through Red Chemistry, Inc., a non-profit organization that raises funds for local youth art programs. Each year, Red Chemistry sponsors a short film competition with local film students from Miami Beach Senior High School and international film students. This year’s theme is “For The Love Of” and the awards ceremony will take at Miami Beach Senior High School on Friday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. A jury of professionals from the movie industry will review films made by European film students as well as films produced by local MBSH students. Awards and cash prizes are given each year during the ceremony. The best films will be purchased by eurocinema and aired on their on-demand channel.

Yacht Party

11pm, Afterparty
LIV at the Fontainebleu

The time has come for Michael Capponi’s annual birthday celebration, this Saturday April 16, 2011. This year’s party is a spoof on the two polar opposite lives Michael Capponi leads today. There is Michael Capponi’s life in Haiti, the poorest country in this hemisphere and his other life in South Beach, throwing lavish parties.

This birthday is way over the top! The private yacht, Allure Shadow, is so big that it won’t even fit under MacArthur causeway. The deck on yacht is as large as any dance floor in any club. Upon entering the yacht at the Miami Beach Marina at 8:00PM, you will be taken back to a James Bond experience with all guests dressed in theme.

Shaken not stirred cocktails courtesy of Grey Goose Vodka.
Lite bites will be provided by Aarons Catering.

In lieu of gifts, there is a minimum donation of $150 in advance or $200 at the door for men. Ladies donation is $20. Due to the limited capacity, it is highly suggested to make your donation and reserve your wrist band prior to my party. All monies collected go straight to United Way to help support my Humanitarian Community in Haiti.

At 11:30PM the music stops and everyone heads to LIV for a surprise part II, which will also blow everyone away!

Please make sure to call Michael Capponi’s office at 305.695.4410 in advance. RSVP is required, email rsvp@capponigroup.com.

City Year Miami & Jumbo’s provide Soul and Soulfood to the Liberty City Community 4/16/11

City Year Miami & Jumbo’s provide Soul and Soulfood to the Liberty City Community
Saturday, April 16th, 2011, 10am – 3pm
7501 Northwest 7th Avenue
Miami, FL 33150

On Saturday, April 16th, 2011, City Year corps members and local business owners team up to revitalize the area around Miami’s historic Jumbo’s Restaurant to promote civic service

A Miami landmark since 1955, Jumbo’s was one of the first restaurants to integrate in 1966 in the midst of segregation. As stated in its Proclamation from the City of Miami, “Through the open mindedness of the management in hopes of making a difference, Jumbo’s became the first restaurant to hire African-American employees in 1967.” Established by Isadore Flam over 50 years ago, Jumbo’s is currently run by his son Bobby Flam, a civic leader and City Year Champion.

City Year Miami is seeking to engage local business owners by providing volunteers clean up storefronts, as well as encouraging them to come out and beautify the area around Jumbo’s. Service projects will include repainting parking stalls, landscaping the entrance of Jumbo’s, trimming grass and removing weeds, amongst other projects. All businesses on 7th Avenue from 62nd to 79th Street are welcome to participate, as this event will be taking place from 10am – 3pm. There will also be entertainment including an African drumline, Bobby Springer, and conga music!

In you are interested in participating, please contact City Year corps member Keshia Powell (786-238-2977/kpowell11@cityyear.org) or Bobby’s business partner Ken Knight (305-305-2699).

We look forward to a great day of service as we recognize what the Sun-Sentinel has called “a social and economic anchor of the community.” Again, this is a surprise for Bobby, so please do not mention this event to him. In the meantime, feel free to enjoy some delicious soulfood at this American Classic and thank you for your support.

Dr. Gillespie is a fairly recent arrival in Miami. Before relocating here, he taught for 29 years at Marquette University. He has written or edited 20 books which have included the works of James Joyce and Oscar Wilde and books on Irish film. His many prestigious positions include Member of the Board of Trustee of the International James Joyce Foundation and President of the American Conference for Irish Studies. Dr. Gillespie is currently working on an oral history of early Joyce studies and a book on Joyce and Theology.

About The Noh8 Campaign
On November 4, 2008 Proposition 8 passed in California, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. The defeat provoked a groundswell of initiative within the GLBT community at a grassroots level, with many new political and protest organizations being formed in response. The NOH8 Campaign is a photographic silent protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska (http://www.bouska.net) and partner Jeff Parshley in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8. Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the world, with “NOH8” painted on one cheek in protest.

Two years since its inception, the NOH8 Campaign has grown to over 10,000 faces and continues to grow at an exponential rate. The campaign began with portraits of everyday Californians from all walks of life and soon rose to include politicians, military personnel, newlyweds, law enforcement, artists, celebrities, and many more. The NOH8 Campaign has received overwhelming support from around the world, appearing on various local and national news programs and publications. The images are currently being used on various social networking sites to spread the message of equality, predominantly Facebook and Twitter. Eventually the images are expected to be compiled for a large-scale media campaign. For more information, please visit: http://www.noh8campaign.com/

Miami Art Museum will premiere a newly-acquired video installation by Mark Boulos, All That Is Solid Melts into Air (2008), on Thursday, April 21, 2011. The installation will open with a talk by Boulos beginning at 6:30pm (doors open at 6pm), followed by a preview and reception from 7:30 until 9pm. Boulos, an artist-filmmaker working in London and Amsterdam, makes multi-screen documentary videos about religious ecstasy and political militancy. All That Is Solid Melts into Air is a two-channel video installation, with images screened on opposite walls of a room. In the projected images the corporate colonization of Nigerian oil resources creates the occasion for a contrast of cultures and beliefs. All That Is Solid Melts into Air will be on view in the Focus Gallery section of Miami Art Museum’s Permanent Collection installation from Friday, April 22, 2011 through Sunday, July 31, 2011.

In the installation, one screen features images shot in the Niger delta, featuring militants of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), which has declared ‘total war’ on the foreign oil corporations that extract and export oil from their territory. The guerillas are shown preparing themselves for battle and asking for blessings from Egbisu, their god of justice and war, who inspires and protects them from bullets. On the opposite screen are traders at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the largest commodities exchange in the world, who speculate on oil and other commodity futures. Paradoxically, Boulos’ video purposely underscores the similarities as well as the differences between these two groups at opposite ends of the oil “pipeline:” Members of each group appear in costume, perform ritualized actions, and whip themselves into emotional frenzies. Through this juxtaposition, Boulos highlights the combination of emotional intensity and ideological abstraction that characterizes both groups.

When All That Is Solid Melts into Air premiered at the Sydney Biennial in 2008, Art in America hailed Boulos as “one of the real discoveries of the exhibition,” and praised the video installation as “lush and enthralling.” When it was presented at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, LA Weekly called it “visceral.” Of his 2010 exhibition at the Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia, which included All That Is Solid Melts into Air, the Vancouver Observer wrote, “At first blush this work seems more like documentary filmmaking than art. But Boulos’ creative juxtapositions and keen eye for detail transports his work to a higher, poetic level.”

All That Is Solid Melts into Air premiered at the 16th Biennale of Sydney in 2008 and has been shown at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2008, the Berlin Biennial in 2010, and the Sundance Film Festival in 2011. The video was acquired by MAM in 2010 when a group of museum supporters saw it at the Berlin Biennial and contributed the funds to purchase it. This is the first time it is being shown at MAM.

Mark Boulos studied visual art at the Rijksakademie in Holland as a Fulbright Scholar, documentary filmmaking at National Film and Television School in England, and philosophy at Swarthmore College and Deep Springs College in USA. He has filmed guerrillas in the Philippines (No Permanent Address, 2010), oil warriors and commodities traders in Nigeria and Chicago (All That Is Solid Melts into Air, 2008), and religious mystics in London and Syria, (The Word Was God, 2006 and The Gates of Damascus, 2005). He has had solo presentations at the Belkin Art Gallery in Vancouver, Ar-Ge Kunst in Bolzano, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. His group shows include the Thessaloniki Biennale 2009, the Sydney Biennale 2008, EASTinternational 2006 at the Norwich Gallery, Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2005 at the Barbican, and Beck’s Futures 2004 at the ICA London. His work has been supported by Film London, the Arts Council England, the Channel 4 British Documentary Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Funds, and the Netherlands Funds for Visual Arts (Fonds BKVB).

Guillermo Portieles re-interprets his memories of existing places and familiar objects, thus making his work in a way an invigorating autobiographical account.

Portieles represents himself in the forefront of the canvas of his paintings. The body of the artist seems to enter the painted surface before him, or to dissolve into it. We are presented with one more version of a motif that perhaps has fascinated us for a long time: a character from the real world bursting into the pictorial representation. This motif would look rather stale if it weren’t for the fact that in Portieles’ versions, the images of both the artist and the canvas appear to embody opposite pictorial solutions: a painting that is divided into abstract expressionism and a photographic appearance. The artist’s motif entering the canvas seems rather an excuse to make antagonistic forms coexist, enticing the beholder to discover the myriad of details that are revealed while exploring his paintings.

Yet, they are objects we are familiar with. They are images that remind us, almost in a Proustian sense of our childhood not from those visions that persist in our memory with more or less intensity, but from associations or small flashes that become alive with the sudden contact with objects that we had at hand in another time. They are objects that inhabited our daily lives and seemed rather irrelevant to us at the time.

Portieles in his canvases presents a masterful balance of formal elegance, technical flair and conceptual daring.

When Volunteers Will Sort, Package, Label, and Weigh Food for Distribution

During National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, Feeding South Floridaâ„¢ (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank) will emphasize the importance of and need for community volunteerism by hosting several corporate volunteer groups, and inviting the media to attend its April 16 volunteer-supported Sorting Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week recognizes the millions of volunteers who devote their time and efforts to making a difference in the lives of others. During this week, Feeding South Florida honors the thousands of volunteers who help the organization fight hunger and feed hope.

From April 10-16, corporate volunteer groups including Starbucks, Macy’s, Bank of America and YUM Brands will donate their time at Feeding South Florida.

At Feeding South Florida’s April 16 Sorting Saturday, approximately one hundred volunteers will show their support for the organization and National Volunteer Week by sorting, packaging, labeling and weighing food at the organization’s headquarters/warehouse in Pembroke Park. The food will then be distributed to Feeding South Florida’s network of more than 800 other not-for-profitorganizations.

Every year, Feeding South Florida, the largest hunger-relief organization in the state of Florida, provides food assistance to help the 920,000 people struggling with food insecurity in our community. During thepast fiscal year, more than 12,000 people volunteered over 40,000 hours at the organization. In addition to helping Feeding South Florida save time and labor costs, volunteerism helps raise awareness of hunger in the region and promotes community involvement in solving the problem.

Many of the food pantries and soup kitchens served by Feeding South Florida report that they rely entirely on volunteers and have no paid staff. “Volunteer support is invaluable to us at Feeding South Florida,” said Judith Gatti, executive director of Feeding South Florida. “Volunteers help keep our administrative costs low, and as a result, 98 cents of every dollar donated to us goes directly toward feeding the hungry. Without the help of volunteers, we could not be so efficient in distributing food to the community.”

The food insecurity rate for South Florida averages 16 percent, and the average cost of a meal is $2.73, according to Feeding America’s new Map the Meal Gap research.

Today, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Breast cancer is not predictable – it is a random disease. There are no boundaries – age, race, religion, socioeconomic status are not factors. It is the leading cause of death among women ages 40 – 59. Breast cancer strikes women during their most productive years – both personally and professionally. Everyone is affected by breast cancer – it’s a family disease. We don’t know what causes it, and we don’t have a cure. Early detection is critical, providing more treatment options and a greater chance of survival.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer over the past 25 years – transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease. We have helped turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. With more than $1.3 billion invested to date, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s single largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to curing breast cancer at every stage – from the causes, to the cures, to the pain and anxiety of every moment in between.

Galleria Ca’ d’Oro New Exhibit Opening Francesco Lopez Visioni di Roma 4/15/11

Francesco Lopez’s Opening Night Cocktail Reception
Friday, April 15, 7 PM
Galleria Ca’ d’Oro
135 S. San Lorenzo Avenue, Suite 130
Coral Gables, FL 33146

Opening Night Cocktail Party To Be Held On April 15, 2011
Exhibition Will Be On Display From April 15th Until June 15th

On Friday, April 15, 2011, Francesco Lopez will host a cocktail reception at Galleria Ca’ d’Oro Miami with the US showing of his most recent work “Visioni di Roma.” The gallery will feature various contemporary photographs, each of which were created using familiar imagery, realism and nature – all inspired by Lopez’s love of Rome.

Galleria Ca’ d’Oro was the perfect location to showcase this collection, “Visioni di Roma”, as the gallery’s main objective is to highlight and showcase Italian & European art to the US. Gloria Porcella and her business partner, Lamberto Petrecca, both will curate Lopez’s show. “The title of Francesco’s art show, ‘Visions of Rome’ compounds two loves. Love for a city, Rome, which no longer is a ‘physical’ place but becomes, in his work, an archetype of constant regeneration, and, precisely because of it, remains equal to itself across the time, becoming a category of the Spirit. Therefore not “a” city but “the” City.” – Lamberto Petrecca on Lopez’s “Visioni di Roma.”

Since the beginning of his career, Lopez has used photography to complement his art and with it he brings to life a composition, geometry, as well as details in which all these components transform an authentic emotion into a look that knows how to capture the essences of things in the particulars of reality. Inspired by a visit to the Coliseum in Rome and using his beloved Leica camera, Francesco Lopez created “Visioni di Roma.”

Among the 22 pieces in the collection of “Visioni di Roma,” one of Lopez’s favorite works is “Roman Graffiti,” a photograph measuring 90 x 120 cm. Lopez was inspired and loved the graffiti and combination of colors that he found on the side of an old Roman wall. This he feels is his tribute to one of his favorite painters, Jackson Pollock. This piece captures the essence of nature and Lopez as an artist. Lopez strongly believes “everything already exists in nature, even so great a work as the one done by Pollock.”

Francesco Lopez is a renowned architect and interior designer known throughout Europe and quickly making a name for himself throughout the United States. Lopez has always had an ardor for art and has been using photography as an expression of his art since he was at the university in Rome. He studied and graduated with a degree in architecture, never formally studying art. “I believe that you don’t need to study art to be an artist. Art is the expression of what you have in your soul” – Francesco Lopez.

Following the Opening Night Cocktail reception, Francesco Lopez’s art works will be on display from April 15, 2011 until June 15, 2011, please call 305.205.5981 to schedule an appointment.
Photos of the artists’ works, background information and interview opportunities with Francesco Lopez are available. Your attendance and coverage of this cocktail preview and art installation is invited.

South Florida anglophiles are encouraged to participate in the morning’s royal wedding themed costume contest. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to those wearing the best royal wedding guest attire, including but not limited to extravagant hats, gloves and morning coats.

“We anticipate having people drop by for breakfast before work and enjoying coffee or the Kir Royale with a nod to the Royal Couple,” said Martin Lynch, co-proprietor with John Clarke. “Anyone unable to attend the morning celebration can watch a replay of the wedding broadcast starting at noon for the lunchtime crowd,” he said.

JohnMartin’s, has been continually recognized for its cuisine by publications that voted the restaurant “Best Pub Food.” The restaurant features live entertainment every Friday and Saturday nights, from Contemporary Top 40 hits to rock to today’s popular Irish ballads. Locust Projects presents TYPOE Purgatory (false ceiling) 4/9/11

TYPOE: Purgatory (false ceiling)
Reception: Saturday, April 9th, 7-10pm
Through April 30, 2011

Locust Projects is pleased to present Purgatory (false ceiling), a new project by infamous Miami graffiti artist TYPOE. In his most ambitious undertaking to date, TYPOE will present a site-specific installation featuring a dropped ceiling covering Locust Projects’ 2,700 square foot gallery space on which he will create an adaption of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel.

Purgatory (false ceiling) will present street art in a gallery space, and continue the artist’s exploration of religious and popular iconography. Taking the Sistine Chapel as a starting point, TYPOE will adapt aspects of Michelangelo’s masterpiece using paint, text and collage, infusing elements of his own style and experience. Using a street art practice known as “wheat pasting,” the artist will affix images printed on paper to the dropped ceiling. Combined, the architectural installation and imagery will convey parallel cultural and autobiographical narratives.

TYPOE is the street name adopted by the Miami-based artist. Recent exhibitions include Bang, Bang, Spinello Gallery, Miami, FL and the group exhibitions Manifest Equality, Los Angeles, CA; Abracadabra, Hollywood Art and Culture Center, Hollywood, FL; and From Gutter to Gallery, Brevard Museum of Art, Melbourne, FL. He is the co-founder of Primary Flight, which organizes a site-specific, street level mural exhibition annually in the Wynwood and Miami Design Districts.

The Dynamo Food Factory & Café is creating a street-side satellite. Beginning this month, the café’s caterer, Shiraz Events, will transform the Bridge Tender House located on the sidewalk in front of the museum into a scaled-down version of the full service restaurant inside the museum. The Bridge Tender House will serve sandwiches, coffee and other beverages, and the café’s signature cupcakes to passersby. In addition, servers in the Bridge Tender House will be a source of information about the museum and will dispense Wolfsonian collateral materials along with local information flyers and maps. Inside the museum, the café has been granted its liquor license, and is now serving wine and beer.

“This is a fantastic development for us. The Bridge Tender House is a wonderful part of our collection that, in its new incarnation as a food depot and information center for passersby, will add to our outreach and interaction with the public,” notes Wolfsonian director Cathy Leff. The hexagonal, stainless-steel Bridge Tender House was built in 1939 for the Northwest 27th Avenue Bridge. Designed in the Art Moderne style by Harrington & Corteyou, the structure was saved from demolition in the late 1980s when the bridge was reconstructed, and it was donated to the collection by the Florida Department of Transportation. In recent years the Bridge Tender House has often housed installations by contemporary artists whose work expanded on themes in the museum’s collection.

Graciela Sacco | M2:Ta
This new series, named for the maximum tension per square meter, is part of the M2 project that the artist has been developing since 2007. Exploring physical as well as symbolic limits is one of the foundations of research in our modern world. The right to possess any space on this planet, however minimal, is essential to allowing individuality. But what is the minimum which would not hinder our thoughts, feelings or actions? Might this have been the issue that motivated the artist to choose the title, somehow implying that physical proximity can contamínate even a figurative independence?

Sacco is a photographer, video and installation artist. She has represented Argentina at several biennials including the Venice Biennale of 2001. Her work has been included in major exhibitions around the world. She was born in Argentina and lives and works in Spain.

Mike Swaney | Ancient Scrolls
My work stems from an on-going, sociological investigation into human behavior. Habit, awkwardness, coincidence, embarrassment, mundane objects, funny words, and subtle absurdity in quotidian life are factors which inform my art tremendously. In searching for a meeting point between the rituals of ancient civilizations and the everyday rituals of our contemporary, digital life, I examine how one can influence and evolve the perception of the other. The relationship between painting and performance art is fundamental to my practice. I am fascinated by the possibility of performance as a static object.

Originally from Canada, Swaney now lives and works in Barcelona. His work has been exhibited internationally in Barcelona, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Tokyo, Toronto and Vancouver. In 2008 he participated in the Fountainhead Residency in Miami.

Please note the extended hours for the Wynwood Art District Second Saturday Gallery Walk, from 2 to 9pm.
Exhibitions will be on view through May 7th.

Miami, Fl 33137i

Valient Art Events is proud to present a group show Be Touched An exhibition that acknowledges GLBT pride values through the mastery of photography and paint. Portions of proceeds benefiting the Gay and Lesbian Task Force (an uncompromising national voice for full LGBT equality)
The artists foray play on the notion of taction, sexuality, sensuality, emotion, and humor between people and the self through the eyes of both heterosexual and homosexual artist. Be Touched, a double entendre makes light of man’s yearning for basic human contact and interaction.

Featured artist Philip Ross Monro, a contemporary fine artist in mixed media as well as paint. Trained at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Beau Arts in Paris. Ross’ contemporary photography revolves around water images and the human figure. These nudes represent a crossover between high realism and abstract human figure.

Steve Walker’s work may be summed up in a personal quote “Love, Light, Loss, Life. Touching, Watching, Thinking. Yearning, Reflecting, Fearing.” Steven’s work is a combination of realism and a classical romanticism conveys an unapologetic sexual orientation that simply is part of its charm. His work present as many questions as it does answers.

Gil Bitton an emerging artist works also retains an unapologetic sense of self as he explores through photography his personal reflections on sexuality by using himself and ex-girlfriends as the principle subject matter.

Be Touched purpose is to champion GLBT values as well as raise funds to assist the Task Force’s aim for social equality. Nature and introspection voice the artist’s latest insights in her long-awaited first solo exhibit.
Reprinted with permission from the original Essay by Egberto Amenas from his blog suite 101.

Earth’s Fertility, the first solo exhibit by Ileana Tolibia currently at the Edge Zones Art Center until April 29, 2001, may come about as a delayed prospect for an artist who has for long, despite her youth, hatched a voice rooted in one of the richest pictorial traditions of the Americas. She was born in Cuba and settled in the United States soon after earning an art degree in 1995 from the celebrated San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana.
As the artist sought broader horizons abroad and pursued further training at the New World School of the Arts and the University of Florida, her imagery seems to have centered ever more on the primal elements of nature and the bearing of its incessant changes on the most tenacious of its creatures. Earth’s Fertility splices yet another plank on the two-way growth of Tolibia’s creative venture, whereby her configurations also chart new passageways to her spiritual chambers.

The Magic of Suggestion
Nature and introspection voice the artist’s latest insights in her long-awaited first solo exhibit.

Nature and introspection spark the bidirectional life of these late pieces. For all their voluptuous swirls, they “look” inward as well, foraying deep into the inner terra incognita from which they have sprouted. In what Baudelaire called the magic of suggestion, here an avid observer of early cultures, mythology, and the always-furtive props of the mind undergirds the gestural organicity of the artwork.
Earth’s Fertility indeed delves far into the interior lushness of nature, but without the ruse of a fit within a literal framing. Never jejune, the analogy calls instead to the free, self-defining amazonian fecundity akin to the artist’s origins and upbringing.
After all, Cuba and its inspiring frondage staged the keenest of all transculturations in the West, and this dynamic trade-off and remix of values amounted at the end to the island’s uniqueness and rarefied excellence in art. Nature there, often holding sway from its magic or marvelous appeal, supplied the feedstock for an imaginative contract with a sense of course and identity.
Transcending Flora, Cycles and Rhythms
Earth’s Fertility likewise assuages Tolibia’s urge to animate the inner self through nature and introspection. However suggestive, she gardens in this solo exhibit a proximate tangibility through a flora that grows and dances and shoots against a failed fulfillment. In a word, that life from the time of inception dangles on the throws of death.
Circling motions, or vine-like attempts to draw them, receptive sheaths, spores and warps of grass, brace a loose archetypical reference that aspires for the ultimate state of being. Earth’s Fertility, abuzz in its rhythms, enchants the viewer with perhaps a feckless antithesis to our last fatality. Meanwhile, if humans shall persist in living, imagination, timely change, and the quest for oneness will certainly ease the stay.

There will be an opening reception for “Earth’s Fertility,” on Saturday, April 9, 2011, from 2pm – 10pm. Meet the artists from 7- 10 pm at Edge Zones Art Center, 47 NE 25th Street, Miami, Florida.

About DJ Induce
Just as the things we want the most are the hardest to attain, DJ Induce, while gaining an increasing amount of exposure over the last few years, has been and will remain a rarity in his field – one which, at least in Miami, he could have arguably created. Yet, he is far from unknown. Reared on early to mid-ninety’s Hip Hop, Induce would study and recreate the clean, simple, yet classic scratches first created by the masters in order to create the unique style of DJing he calls his own.

Gliding through the genres without feeling out of place, Induce has become the go-to DJ in Miami for those seeking that next sound. Whether he is needed to create an atmosphere for The Miami Art Museum’s open house, poolside at the world-renowned Fontainebleau Hotel, making indie hipsters pump their fists until 5am at Miami’s 9 year indie staple, Poplife, or keeping the sweat drenched grown folks feeling sexy with his classic disco sets, it is no wonder why he was voted by the Miami New Times as best club DJ of 2008.

Induce also continually releases DJ mixes; many available for download on the Hometeam Podcast in the iTunes store, including an exquisite mix recorded live at LA’s legendary Do-Over party. Under the name, Midnight Moroders, he has also teamed with fellow Miami DJ’s, including Danny Daze (of DiscoTech) to produce a masterful mix of Italo-Disco, ranging from the rare to the classic Italo favorites.

An entire country of treasures awaits collectors during Asian Pacific Awareness heritage month in the Miami Design District. As an active advocate of Asian art and culture, ICFAC and ART LEXING will present a highly curated set of Asian art shows and cultural programs this April and May featuring the finest paintings, sculptures and ceramics to suit every taste. Visit our show room in the Buena Vista building to unlock the richness and diversity of these categories and discover the art of China, up close and personal.

“Access to China” is a three-part exhibition sponsored by the International Chinese Fine Arts Council and Miami Design District showcasing distinctly diverse selection of Chinese art. “The Feminine Flair” by ART LEXING presents a dialog between two acclaimed Chinese artists: Ye Hongxing and Wang Xiaojin. “Emerging Art on Paper” curated by Inez Suen will show four recent graduates from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Chinese Iconography on Porcelain from the Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tse Collection is an educational exhibiting targeted at informing the public of various iconographic motifs on Chinese porcelain.

“The Feminine Flair” by ART LEXING
Ye Hongxing employs traditional Chinese motifs and modern elements in her Fusion series. She expresses a unique vision by combining the traditionally Western medium of oil paint together with Chinese porcelain decorative patterns. Her paintings are very alluring self-portraits in which her face, with eyes-closed, appears behind bright winding floral patterns. Composed of shades of grey, her facial expression is of particular significance. As the artist is very concerned with the juxta position of “peace and luxury”, one can detect a tranquil or almost mundane emotion in her gaze. In contrast to using somber tones, the vibrant colors and exquisite composition of flowers and vines elicit the feeling of luxury. Consequently, her work seems to embrace a duality of notions: realism and visionary.

Unlike many contemporary Chinese artists who are attracted by all things modern, Wang Xiaojin is a modernist driven and inspired by the distant past, particularly its women and artistry. Critics claimed that Wang Xiaojin’s artworks have best captured the mood of a bygone era that was altogether most refined and conservative and a time when being “feminine” typified a woman’s existence. Possessing a neoclassical position within contemporary Chinese artists, Wang Xiaojin crosses chronological boundaries in his work, challenging us to see the new in the old…and the old in the new.

“Emerging art on Paper” curated by Inez Suen
China’s art market, which has spread the idea of art as a strong social force within Chinese culture, has cultivated vast exposure for younger Chinese visual artists in the east through curators based outside the country. Fresh out of the China Academy of Art, these Western-influenced artists who have also trained within the Eastern Chinese tradition have given the Chinese art market a modern sensibility and expression primed for the international stage. This exhibition pries open the minds of young Chinese artists. These are artists who grew up in the new China, the post Tiananmen Square government that slowly recognized that stagnation equaled death. These artists’ works reflect the evolving sense of individuality and personal identity formulated because of, or in spite of, a culture that still remains quintessentially Chinese.

Chinese Iconography on Porcelain is an ICFAC sponsored exhibition targeted at educating the general public on the symbols and motif that are commonly found in Chinese art. Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Tse are avid collectors of Chinese porcelain and have generously donated a portion of their collection to this exciting event. This story spans 21 years and two continents.
On April 10, 1990, a belly dancer Tamalyn Dallal opened the Mid Eastern Dance Exchange, which was the only dance school in South Beach. It was her birthday. little did she know that that studio would spawn international dance stars who would tour the world; including Bellydance Superstars Amar Gamal and Bozenka, plus many more who opened bellydance schools around the globe. Ms. Dallal became well known too, and has left Miami Beach to travel the world teaching bellydance to women from China to Patagonia. One of the popular yearly events, which took place from 1994 to 2007, was an outdoor bellydance festival on Lincoln Road called “Orientalia”. otientalia has also gone global and been produced in Argentina and Hong Kong.

Tamalyn Dallal is also a writer and burgeoning film maker. In the most recent of her three books, entitled “40 Days and 1001 Nights” she traveled to five Muslim countries and lived in each one for forty days. One of the places she lived in was Zanzibar, an island of the coast of mainland Tanzania (East Africa). On this beautiful island she found thousands of heroin addicts. Unbeknownst to her, the young man who was helping her find her way was also an addict.

There were no rehab programs in the entire region. Most people thought that recovery was impossible and that many from this generation were lost forever. But this young man went to a recovery program in Kenya, then came home to Zanzibar and opened his own program. He now has five recovery houses and a sixth on the way. He has helped hundreds of addicts find hope and sobriety.

In July, 2011, fourteen bellydancers from around the world will go to Zanzibar to take a dance workshop and cultural tour with Tamalyn Dallal and her famous protoge, Bozenka. During this time, Tamalyn Dallal and friends will present the Orientalia Festival in a historic Arab fort in Zanzibar. This festival will benefit the drug rehabilitation homes and people will be able to come and learn how their sons can also recover from addiction. It is a festival of hope.

The studio party/performance, on April 10th in Miami Beach will feature 20 bellydancers, including Tamalyn Dallal. Funds raised will go toward producing the Orientalia festival in Zanzibar…Dancing to help Zanzibar become drug free.

Tax season is here, which means the dreaded day is looming. This year, the tax return deadline has been extended to Monday, April 18, adding stress to an already loathed day of the week. To give Miami-Dade residents incentive for getting their taxes done early or providing a little relief for those who procrastinated, RA Sushi in South Miami has created a “Manic Monday” special, extending its Happy Hour from 3 p.m. to close on April 18.

Keeping a little money in their pockets, on tax day guests can choose from more than 35 sushi, appetizer, and tapas selections, plus more than 30 beer, wine and signature cocktails ranging from $2 to $7. RA Sushi in South Miami’s Happy Hour typically runs from 3 to 7 p.m., but on this specific day Happy Hour specials will be offered from 3 p.m. until close.

Updated earlier this year, the Happy Hour menu has been expanded to include new menu items, plus a variety of RA’s most popular dishes. Now included in the selections are new tapas menu items: Garlic Sugar Snap Peas and Shishito Peppers. Cocktails that were recently added to the menu are also being offered, such as the Dragon Bite (Bacardi Dragonberry, strawberry puree, fresh lemon juice, yuzu & a splash of soda make for an exotic blend bursting with fresh berry), Samurai Cowboy (Red Stag Black Cherry Bourbon, Aperol, yuzu sour, lemon juice & ginger ale create a powerfully exotic cocktail with a mellow bourbon kick), and Red Lotus (Absolut Ruby Red vodka, X-Rated, pink grapefruit & other fresh juices – sweet, tart & tasty). Spanish River Church will be donating playground equipment and furniture that they gained through fundraisers to the Broward Outreach Pompano Center.

Spanish River Church Homeless Ministry is a mission devoted to serving the poor and needy in our community. Beginning in 2006, a group of volunteers from Spanish River Church has donated their time and efforts to ease the plight of homelessness in South Florida through their efforts with the Broward Outreach Pompano Center, working directly with the homeless families served by the center.

Since 1922 the Miami Rescue Mission (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) Centers have served the homeless and needy men, women, and children of Miami. Every day the organization provides food, shelter, clothing, education, job training, spiritual direction and long-term rehabilitation programs in Miami, Hollywood and Pompano to nearly 1,000 homeless on a daily basis. The mission also has at-risk after-school and summer day camp youth programs. The Miami Rescue Mission started reaching out to the homeless in Broward County in 1992 and in 1997 the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood was opened. Then in 2002 the Broward Outreach Center in Pompano Beach was opened to serve the homeless in the north end of Broward.

Upcoming exhibit Arrived by M-Lon 4/9/11

April 9, starting at 7:00 p.m.
The Lunch Box Gallery
310 NW. 24th St
Miami, FL 33127
Casual. Wine, cheese & crackers.

The Lunch Box Gallery is pleased to announce its new show “Arrived” by emerging Venezuelan artist, painter and illustrator M-Lon (Miguel Gonzalez) on April 9, 2011 at 310 NW. 24th St. Miami, FL 33127, starting at 7:00pm.

“Arrived” gathers 18 photographs intervened with digital illustrations (mixed media), where the artist combines photography with the use of a WACOM digital pen, thus giving life to fascinating images that equally share the participation of both reality and fantasy.

This series is born by the need to awaken reflections about our environment, by means of the visit of imaginary beings that interact with our context. These entities star in scenes of urban and natural encounters, particular or general ones, within a reality which we would consider they don’t belong to, but nevertheless where they try to find their own space.

By penetrating into an unknown society, these beings attempt to discover our world through innocent frolicking; and the behavior that sometimes seems vile or spiteful, is nothing more than a wild and instinctive interaction caused by not knowing the conduct codes of our world. In fact, these are interactions where the process of exploring turns them into personifications of feelings and moods in their maximum state of purity; emotions we can somehow relate to.

These approaches, many times nostalgic and curious but always naïve, along with their visions confronted with joy or lack of it when entering our space, are an invitation to discover, imagine and reconsider the world that surround us.

“Arrived” reflects on M-Lon’s idea that when we truly come close and stop to observe, admire and understand that all these elements, natural or man-made, mean something to someone, it is in that precise moment when we will begin to take care, enjoy and respect it all.
