Listening to a song now is likely to involve digital innovation, similarly to when one rents an apartment, uses a car, or books a taxi. The music that used to be bought and owned is increasingly an ephemeral choice, ordered for limited periods when and as wanted.

Delivery, consumption, and creation changes have been constants of the music industry for decades. The evolutions have been from live to analog formats, to digital platforms such compact discs and copies, to full downloads, and most recently internet streaming. Each shift has altered the relation-ship and income split between delivery intermediaries and the artists.

Ubiquitous internet access coupled with smart phone and tablet sophistication now offer access that previously required premium services or a PC. What will be the next iteration of content delivery and distribution? Will it involve music only or incorporate other mediums? Which new delivery platforms will be developed? What role might big data play in target marketing and sales? Will it be easier for new or independent artists to obtain a market for their creations? Will new intellectual property ten-sions arise?

This classy music venue—former home to dance clubs Power and Glo—has the fairly dubious distinction of being located next door to a Western Beef supermarket. But indoors, the spartan 700-person-capacity space distinguishes itself with exposed beams, lounge-worthy lighting, and a column-free main floor with great sight lines from both the wide downstairs area and the carpeted balcony. Terra Group and The Related Group, the development team bringing the Park Grove community to the Coconut Grove neighborhood come 2018, gave back to its future community by sponsoring the kids at Coconut Grove Cares to an evening of fun and sports—over 100 of them.

The pre-construction development, which also happens to be the future home of a key figure from the Miami Heat, rented two buses and purchased over 100 tickets to bring the kids of Coconut Cares to watch the city’s most beloved team.

David Martin, President and Co-founder of Terra Group and Cathy Strafaci, Director of Sales at Park Grove, gave the kids their tickets to the game at the Barnyard at Coconut Grove Cares, who, in turn, presented them with a big thank you card for taking them to the game.

The buses then shuttled the kids off to American Airlines Arena for the Heat game and returned them back to the Barnyard at Coconut Grove Cares following for their parents to then bring them home.

This is the first in a series of efforts for the future residency, Park Grove, to give back to its community.

Seniors 65 years and older with a knack for singing are invited to audition for Tri-Rail’s “Senior Stars.” As part of this annual event, 12 finalists will be chosen to sing their way to the top at the final competition for the chance to win a $500 cash prize and a free pass to ride Tri-Rail for one year.

Tri-Rail’s “Senior Stars” is open to solo singers who are residents of Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. A panel of judges will select the 12 contestants who will go on to compete in the final competition at Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, May 22, hosted by TV/radio personality Jade Alexander.

A portion of show ticket sales will benefit Broward Meals on Wheels, an organization dedicated to improving health, reducing isolation and promoting independent living for seniors in our community. Tri-Rail’s “Senior Stars” sponsors include Boomer Times, Symphony at the Waterways, John Knox Village and Broward Health.

The National Hotel is serving up a plentiful Easter Brunch Buffet at Tamara Bistro for $39 per adult and $19.50 for kids, complete with live performances by the renowned cast of The Cabaret South Beach and a complimentary Egg Hunt.

Sunday brunch guests are encouraged to gather as many artfully decorated surprise-filled eggs as they can find throughout the property. The ultimate find will be a magnificent “Golden Egg,” which will include a complimentary two-night stay at The National Hotel and $100 certificate to Tamara Bistro with a complimentary bottle of champagne. The egg hunt will be from 1-2 p.m.

Patrons can indulge in a brunch buffet between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. that includes: a full breakfast station, specialty breakfast items, desserts, a carving station, brunch specialties, and one complimentary Mimosa or Bloody Mary. The Bottomless Mimosas package is available for an additional $25 per person.

Also included in the price of this Easter Brunch “eggs-travaganza,” guests will have all-day access to the hotel’s pool, the longest infinity-edge pool in Miami Beach.

As a result of a national study of local neighborhood initiatives, John McKnight and his long-time colleague, Jody Kretzmann, created the Asset-Based Community Development strategy for community building. Together, they co-authored the basic guide to asset based community development, Building Communities from the Inside Out: A Path Toward Identifying and Mobilizing a Community’s Assets. This book has become one of the nation’s best-selling guides to community development, and the methods it outlines are now utilized world-wide.
McKnight has also written three additional books – The Careless Society: Community and its Counterfeits and, together with co-author Peter Block, The Abundant Community: Awakening the Power of Families and Neighborhoods. His latest publication, An Other Kingdom: Departing the Consumer Culture, was co-authored by Peter Block, Walter Brueggemann and John McKnight.

McKnight has been active with many civil organizations. He co-founded the Health and Medicine Policy Research Group, a unique health policy organization in Chicago. The Big Serve is a philanthropic event presented by Jonathan Nussbaum, President of LaceClips, in an effort to provide 400 inner-city youth with access to the sport of tennis and engage the residents of Miami Beach with children in Greater Miami-Dade County.

On Friday, children from the four non-profit organizations will be able to enjoy and partake in four stations including meet and greet/autograph opportunities with pro tennis players and notable local celebrities, a tennis clinic with lessons from pro tennis players, a fitness station featuring celebrity personal trainers provided by Fast Twitch and a concession station with drinks provided by Menin Hospitality and Icelandic Glacial and food provided by Shake Shack and David’s Café. DJ Irie will provide beats alongside the Miami Heat’s MC, Uptown Dale, to ensure kids have a fun, energetic afternoon to remember.

The United States Tennis Association will organize and provide resources and follow-up locations where kids can play tennis after the event. Children will also receive a tote bag provided by Head with various items including tennis balls provided by Biscayne Tennis, a Head Tennis racquet, and a t-shirt provided by Jonathan Nussbaum and Becker & Poliakoff. All proceeds from the event will benefit Overtown Youth Center, Irie Foundation, Wade’s World Foundation and the Miami Beach Tennis Foundation. Thanks to Drake’s beyond-obvious sample of “Why Can’t We Live Together” in his monster worldwide hit “Hotline Bling,” the world is dancing yet again to Timmy Thomas’ groove. 2016 will find Timmy Thomas releasing a string of singles on Overtown Records and one on Saustex Media, prior to his comeback album. His collaborators range from the late Steve Jobs to Timmy’s old hitmaking crew at TK records. They were recorded in the manner Soul Music deserves: Living and Breathing on analog tape – so it may be released on vinyl. Timmy Thomas famously sang “People Are Changing” on his first LP. The people may have changed, but their love of his soulful groove remains the same.

About the Bird Road Art Walk:
Five years strong, the Bird Road Art Walk continues to bring artists and collectors together. On the 3rd Saturday of each month, artists’ open their studios, along with alternative spaces and galleries that dot the industrial area along SW 74 Ave & SW 75 Ave.

The event features a broad range of contemporary, emerging and established artists working in a variety of mediums ranging from photography to sculpture, mixed media, conceptual art, ceramics, drawing, painting etc… art and unique items for all tastes and budgets.

The Bird Road Art Walk is FREE & OPEN to the public.
The event is organized and funded by the Bird Road Art District, Inc., a non-profit volunteer based organization.

The Florida International University Department of Architecture’s Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show will launch its successful event for a third year in a row. The fashion show will feature a variety of outfits that are completely made from recycled materials. The event, which was created with the purpose of promoting sustainability through fashion, strives to educate and inspire the community about good recycling habits and an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. This year’s runway is expected to showcase more than 50 outfits, all of which will be reusable. All proceeds from this event go towards scholarships for students in the FIU Department of Architecture.

The Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show is hosted by Event Founder, Artistic Director, and FIU Architecture alumna Amira Ajlouni ’14 and Event Partner, Artistic Director, and current Architecture graduate student Jennifer Luis. Join us for a Knight News Challenge on Libraries workshop. We’ll get to meet and greet, hear from local experts including Rebecca Fishman Lipsey of 100 Great Ideas, and Gia Arbogast
Director of Miami-Dade Public Library System, and discover what makes a successful project.

The New Tropic will lead a group brainstorming and design workshop after to help flesh out some ideas.

On Feb. 24, Knight Foundation’s second News Challenge on Libraries will open for applications. We will be offering applicants a chance to share winnings of $3 million for projects that answer the question: How might libraries serve 21st century information needs?

For centuries, libraries have been the keepers of public knowledge, spaces for human connection and educators for the next generations of learners. For this challenge, we hope to unearth new ways to advance libraries and their collaborators to meet the needs of their communities and carry these ideals into the future. T

The challenge will be open for applications from Feb. 24 to March 21. Anyone working in the U.S. on U.S. – based projects can apply, including public and private libraries, businesses, nonprofits and individuals. Projects have the chance to receive funding anywhere between $100,000 – $500,000 for a grant period of one to two years.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion: Exploring L.A. in a Miracle Dress

We all have big dreams and seemingly insignificant pero important dreams. One of the latter for us was to one day find a dress like the pink velour one Hallie wore in “My Date with the President’s Daughter”—the one dramatically revealed at minute 7 of this YouTube clip from the movie. After years of passively searching, we finally found it (albeit a more hipster tunic version but perfect nonetheless)! The long-awaited dress was waiting for us inside of the Hyden Yoo Boutique on Abbot Kinney where we came across it last Saturday while shopping with our friend Sarah. Finding this dress was one small part of a five day-long marathon of amazing juju that carried us through our recent Los Angeles trip (of which you will hear more about on ThankYouMiami.com next week) because it turns out it is impossible to find Hyden Yoo’s women collection anywhere on the internets.

Because this outfit was a miracle a long time in the making, we naturally bumped all other OOTDs planned for Sunday Brunch to make room for this fabulous dress. So, on Sunday, armed with our new dress, our favorite sunnies, and our favorite ASKA Collection booties (you may remember them from our last #ThankYouMiami for Fashion post because we love them so much we wear them everyday) we headed to The Rockefeller in Manhattan Beach with our sister Lucy and her friends. The tunic cut was perfect for brunching—ergo, extremely applicable to Miami life—because it allowed our bellies to expand for unlimited mimosas, a massive plate of chilaquiles, zucchini fries, and donut holes and still looked flattering. And, afterward when we went on a post-brunch buzz drive down the California coast blasting Mariah Carey’s “Emotions” with the windows down, it turned out to be the prettiest, most comfortable outfit for that too. #winning.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, or MOCA, presents singer Timmy Thomas, best known for his 1973 #1 hit, “Why Can’t We Live Together.” Thanks to Drake’s sample of “Why Can’t We Live Together” in his worldwide hit “Hotline Bling,” the world is dancing yet again to Thomas’ groove. The 71-year-old keyboard player is currently signed to Overtown Records, a Miami-based operation that’s home to his former label mate Blowfly. The public is invited to gaze at the stars while listening to Thomas’ soulful new music.

In conjunction with Jazz at MOCA, enjoy a special performance by French-Guadeloupean artist Marielle Plaisir in the museum galleries from 7-10 p.m. Her solo exhibit Acta Non Verba will be on display until May 29.

FoodSpark Miami will be debuting its second pop-up potluck event in the City of Hialeah at the historic Hialeah Market Station. Hialeah residents of all ages are invited to join us for a fun, interactive gathering where they’ll have an opportunity to bond and collaborate over great food provided by local restaurants, and conversation around social issue topics relevant to their immediate community. Seating for this event is limited, so RSVPs are highly encouraged in order to guarantee we have enough chairs for everyone.

FoodSpark Miami is an initiative of Celebrate Diversity Miami, a large-scale community engagement initiative founded in October 2014 that aims to promote a deepened sense of connectivity between the culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhoods of greater Miami. It’s made possible in part by the K880 Emerging City Champions fellowship, a program of 880 Cities with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as well as the 2015 Public Space Challenge, a program of The Miami Foundation with support from Baptist Health South Florida.

Join us for our Inaugural Ride!

Every first Sunday of the month, Bike the Underline Cycling Club will lead guided, free, family-friendly group rides for bicyclists of all levels to explore the future Underline and its surrounding neighborhoods and attractions by bike.

For our first ride, we’ll meet at the UM Metrorail Station and ride north 6.5 miles to Mary Brickell Village. We’ll break for complimentary refreshments at Perricone’s Marketplace & Cafe. Cyclists may bike or take transit back from Brickell Metrorail Station. The total distance, round-trip by bike, is 13 miles.

We kicked off SOBEWFF®’s 15th anniversary with longtime friend Giada De Laurentiis! Host of multiple shows on Food Network, including Giada in Italy and long-running hit primetime series Food Network Star, she brought a taste of her namesake restaurant GIADA at The Cromwell in Las Vegas to the sands of South Beach.  We joined the widely recognized queen of Italian cuisine who hosted more than 30 of the nation’s greatest chefs serving up dishes originating from various regions of Italy behind the iconic Delano Hotel. We perused Piedmont, trotted through Tuscany, savored Sardinia, canvased Campania, sauntered through Sicily, and more – while sinking our toes into the sparkling white sands of South Beach. Growing up in Miami, Florida, LeNard was always surrounded by many different musical styles. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from Classical, Jazz, Hymns and the funk of James Brown.

LeNard has shared the stage with a number of highly respectable jazz artists such as: Nnenna Freelon, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kenny Drew Jr., and Harry Allen. In May of 2006, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST, by the Miami New Times magazine.

Through Art Walls, we are committed to presenting a diverse, curated selection of fine art for sale in unique rotating exhibits which are highlighted through community events that support local businesses, non-profits, and the arts. Private art tours will also be conducted with art buyers and interior designers as well as corporate and hospitality design professionals. During events and private tours, our Staff will also be available to provide information about the works exhibited as well as the artists.

Concrete Beach is recreating their own version of Little Havana’s Domino Park at the Social Hall. Every Thursday, domino games will be set up throughout the Social Hall, and the Brewery will offer a special $6 tasting flight inspired by the very game itself.

Guests are invited to lace ‘em up and join in on a one-mile fun run every Wednesday following yoga. The run goes around Wynwood to various neighborhood spots, ending at Concrete Beach! The run is open and free to all, and of course there will be plenty of cold beer at the finish line available for purchase.

During March’s event, CBB will be debuting its new Blood Orange Berliner Weisse, a sour ale with a deep citrus aroma and light effervescent body. Guests are encouraged to chill out, bring their instruments for a free-form jam session, and offer cheers to the full moon with a pint.

Brew House Rock is a monthly educational series designed for anyone who is interested in developing a deeper knowledge and appreciation for craft beer. Each class has a different theme, and includes beer tastings with special ingredients to highlight subtle flavor notes, such as caramel, toffee and fruit. March’s theme is yeast, the building blocks of beer. Participants will learn about every brewer’s favorite microorganism and how something so small has such a large impact on beer.
