YogArt, a DARLEE production, has experienced a year of unprecedented growth in 2015. Miami’s world-renowned Art Basel weekend will mark the fifth anniversary of Cavicchioli 1928 presents YogArt sponsored by jugofresh & The Sacred Space Miami December 4 – 6 at Wynwood Walls. Additionally, YogArt presented by Chȃteau D’Esclans & The Sacred Space Miami will host the second installation of its new 10-month expanded series in the Miami Design District’s Palm Court plaza on November 25.

“YogArt’s unique mix of rejuvenating yoga sessions, live music and healthy food and drink has proven to be a winning formula for South Florida and those traveling to Miami for Art Basel,” noted YogArt co-founder and avid philanthropist Arlene Chaplin. “The lively backdrops provided by Goldman Properties’ Wynwood Walls and the Design District’s Palm Court plaza are perfect settings for inspired cultural and community events like YogArt.”

Each class lasts approximately one hour, and will be led by South Florida certified Jivamukti teacher and licensed movement therapist Dawn B. Feinberg. Live music for the weekend’s sessions will feature DJ Drez, The Mayapuris and Marti Nikko. Widely recognized artist, philanthropist and entrepreneur Peter Tunney will design a special yoga mat to be auctioned off during Friday’s session to benefit Miami’s Design Architecture Senior High (DASH).

Curated by Goldman Properties’ CEO Jessica Goldman Srebnick since 2012, this year’s Wynwood Walls program, Walls of Change, will include 14 new large scale murals and installations by globally acclaimed street artists, as well as a program of events within the art park that will be free and open to the public. Goldman Properties will also debut The Wynwood Walls Garden, a new art space adjacent to the Wynwood Doors, which the company recently purchased to augment its artistic imprint in the neighborhood.

Sessions for YogArt during Art Basel weekend are made possible by valued sponsors 3six5Sport, Buddha Pants, Cavicchioli 1928, evian® natural spring water, ginnybakes, Goldman Properties, jugofresh, MIAMI magazine, Miami New Times, Ocean Drive, The Sacred Space Miami, TY KU Sake, Wynwood Walls, and ZICO Premium Coconut Water.

The Miami Design District’s chic Palm Court plaza will host its second installation of YogArt on Wednesday, November 25, also led by Dawn B. The first session drew a sold-out crowd in October and featured flowing rosé compliments of Whispering Angel, live music from an 11-piece Brass Fellows Ensemble from New World Symphony and a healthy bite compliments of ella, a pop up café by Chef Michael Schwartz. Future musical acts include Miami’s own Afrobeta, the Magic City Hippies and DJ Immortal with accompanying musicians.

Palm Court, the neighborhood’s pedestrian plaza, is home to the Buckminster Fuller Fly’s Eye Dome, Xavier Veilhan’s Le Corbusier sculpture and Sou Fujimoto’s waterfall inspired façade that evokes Miami’s tempestuous rainsqualls. Asanas aside, Palm Court is the ideal point of departure for yogis to explore the Design District’s upscale fashion and design offerings.

Sessions for YogArt’s newly expanded Design District series are made possible by valued sponsors Chariff Realty Group, Chȃteau D’Esclans, evian® natural spring water, Greenmonkey® yoga, Lifeway Foods, lululemon athletica, Ocean Drive, The Sacred Space Miami, and ZICO Premium Coconut Water.

Massive Urban Art Block Party To Debut In Wynwood. Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood has become synonymous with graffiti, urban art, murals and street art, and it offers a unique way for the public to experience this art form. This year, Mana Wynwood, Mana Contemporary and the Bushwick Collective have teamed up to launch the Mana Urban Arts Project at the iconic RC Cola Plant in Miami. To celebrate this historic occasion, they joined forces with Basel House to host a free, four-day block party during Art Basel Week. The Basel House & Bushwick Collective Block Party will be the epicenter of the graffiti world this December. RSVP for the Launch Party to get a Free Drink.

The Block Party will showcase some of the world’s top street artists including Ghost (NY), GIZ (NY), Case Maclaim (Germany), Shok1 (England), Atomik (Florida), Lola Blu (Florida), Crash One TATS CRU (NY), Don Rimx (Florida), Sipros (Brazil), James Cochran (Australia), Aiko (US/Japan), SPOK (Spain), Hoxxoh (Florida) and Trek6 (Florida), to name a few. These artists will transform the RC Cola Plant with an entire body of new murals and paintings. Artists will be painting live throughout the four-day event. In addition, The Heineken® Mobile Art Experience will make a stop with their branded truck, which will feature a rotating canvas on the outside and a fully stocked art store and gallery on the inside. In addition, a free concert series featuring Fat Joe and other hip hop legends will add to the colorful backdrop. DJ’s, arts & craft vendors will also be present. It wouldn’t be Wynwood without the Food Trucks, so Basel House has secured a swarm of South Florida favorites; from lobster to hot dogs, you name it, they’ll be serving it up!

Curating the collaboration is Joe Ficalora of the Bushwick Collective from Brooklyn. The Bushwick Collective was born on the streets of Brooklyn as a way for Joe to cope with personal tragedy. The Collective transformed a large section of the Bushwick neighborhood into a colorful and vibrant work of urban art. Many of those artists will be making the trip to Miami to help launch the Wynwood location of the Mana Urban Arts Project. “We are proud to showcase some of the best artists from around the world, and we hope to inspire the masses,” explains Joe.

The team at SWARM is known for hosting incredible events throughout South Florida, and Basel House will be no different. “We are honored to be working with the Bushwick Collective and Mana,” says Tony Albelo, SWARM CEO and Basel House Director. “The only way to launch this unique project is with a complete and utter blowout, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Still being defined by the burgeoning creative scene, the Arts and Entertainment District is poised for exceptional growth in the coming years.

Celebrating The Value In Failure 11/18/15

Failure in business is when you realize what you’re doing is not going to work, and the pivot that follows is key to success. In Silicon Valley and New York, failures are famously celebrated and treated as valuable learning experiences. However, in many U.S. and Latin American cities with nascent entrepreneurial ecosystems, the term “failure” remains taboo.

This year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week, YPA Miami and Luminary Central bring you local entrepreneurs from various sectors to share their stories of success—peppered with failures both large and small—for a conversation aimed at breaking the taboo.

Join us on November 18 @ The Lab Miami as we discuss with high-profile entrepreneurs how their failures led to their subsequent success, and their learnings along the way. Luminary Central and YPA Miami have joined forces to present this panel discussion in an effort to lessen the taboo of “failure” and celebrate the value in its learnings.

Confirmed speakers*:
Michael “Mike” B. Fernandez, Chairman, MBF Healthcare Partners
Ivan Rapin-Smith, Director, Watsco Ventures
Lilia Luciano, Journalist & Founder of CoInspire (moderator)

X Contemporary is a contemporary art fair established in 2015 under the direction of Matthew Eck with a focus on galleries and cultural institutions who promote the work of emerging and mid career artists.

Opening in the Wynwood district, across from Wynwood Walls, the 28,000 square foot art fair will feature a selection of major exhibitions and over 27 exhibitors from the US, Europe and South America. The art fair will emphasize a crossover between postwar and contemporary art in specially curated projects that add depth to the fair’s exhibitions, while considering the art historic importance of the trends and cultural influences impacting artists today.

X Contemporary is excited to highlight a few key exhibitions presented at the fair, as special projects that will enrich attendee’s experiences with curated, survey and retrospective style shows.

Michael Klein Arts LLC will present, Grace Hartigan 1960-1965, The Perry Collection, an exhibition of paintings and collages that represent Hartigan’s Abstract Expressionist style as it evolved in the early 1960s. Hartigan was a key innovator amongst painters of the New York School and was the only female artist included in the traveling exhibit T he New American Painting, designed to introduce European audiences to American art. The variety of paintings in this anticipated exhibition will highlight Hartigan’s style of vivid color and texture painted on a large scale. The fair will provide the perfect opportunity to reintroduce Hartigan’s work to a professional audience of dealers, curators and critics. After its exhibition at X Contemporary, the collection will tour to other institutions both in the US and abroad.

Pamela Willoughby, an art consultant based in New York City and East Hampton that has served as an advisor to many respected contemporary collections, will showcase her expertise in post modern, contemporary and emerging art. Presenting iconic handmade postcard collages created by JeanMichel Basquiat early in his career, alongside work by renowned UK based mural artist, Hush, Willoughby Art Advisory will give viewers the opportunity to consider the genesis of street art incorporation into the New York gallery scene and its global evolution through today. This thought provoking range of work w ill also include work b y artists P eter Dayton, Dora Frost and photography by the artistic team Cyril Christo & Marie Wilkinson.

Castle Fitzjohns Gallery presents the original Pop Shop sign, painted by Keith Haring for the Lafayette St. gallery in 1986. The 10 panel Pop Shop Sign conceived and executed by Keith Haring in collaboration with Andre Charles extended across and around the building during its renovation beginning in the winter of 1986. The sign was made from an original sketch drawn by Haring and served as a temporary placard until it was removed from the building in the fall of 1987. At the time of its removal by the City of New York, artist Robin Van Arsdol acquired it for his private collection where it has remained ever since. It has been exhibited internationally and was featured in Germany in 2010 and and was then sent to an exhibition at the Russian State Art Museum in Moscow in May 2011.

TIMEBAG, the independently organized artist project based in Colombia, will present a survey of work by emerging, midcareer and established Colombian artists, titled Colombia N.O.W. T his project curated by Carlos Uribe, Gabriel Mario Vélez and Maria Luisa Vélez, invites a public discussion on the country and culture of Colombia today. In this dynamic exhibition, the artists reflect on several social, political and emotional landscapes of a contemporary Colombia. The presentation will include works by artists, Libia Posada, Jesús Abad Colorado, Fredy Alzate, Juan Raúl Hoyos, Víctor Garcés, Paulo Licona, Harold Ortiz, Juan David Henao, Sara Herrera, Juan Obando, and José Moreno.

International artist network, Berlin Collective works to connect artists with new exhibiting and collaborating opportunities. The group’s presentation at X Contemporary will include works by artists Eric Slayton, Elena Lyakir and Javier Barrera. I n presenting these works together, the comparison becomes relevant to understanding each artist’s journey and discovery. The selection highlights bold work by Eric Slayton and the addition to his G ravity Collection. As well as, new work by artist Eleana Lyakin, titled City Parks Romance. The presentation will also showcase a intaglio prints series by Javier Barrera, in which the artist uses hybrid forms of traditional and digital printmaking.

In collaboration with the Harold Golen Gallery, FETA Foundation presents Stephen Marotto in a program of music for solo cello and electronics, all of which explore the boundaries of the instrument in a unique way. “In ImagE, Roger Reynolds creates beautiful textures that juxtapose the natural harmonics and resonance of the instrument with virtuosic grace note flurries. Mark Andre knits a delicate sound world, most of which occupies the space on the threshold of silence in iv 2. The music utilizes physical gestures on the instrument that are precisely mapped out, mediating un-pitched materials to create tension. In contrast, Mourning Fog by Rand Steiger features beautiful melodic figures derived from distinct harmonic spectra. The cello is augmented by live electronics. The cello sounds are recorded, processed and then recombined. The final piece, Salvatore Sciarrino’s Ai Limiti Della Notte unleashes the tensions hidden in the residuals of the strings.”

FuckUp Nights Miami invites you to meet Chef Samuel Gorenstein, My Ceviche and Lenny Medina, Artist, Producer, Songwriter. Join these successful personas as they break free from the stigmas surrounding “failure” and communicate failure as a positive step everyone must overcome on the road to greatness.

COCKTAIL DRINKS BY AMBHAR TEQUILA AND BLACKWELL RUM + LIGHT NOM NOMS WILL BE SERVED

What are FuckUp Nights? FuckUp Nights is a monthly event where awesome people talk about one of their biggest professional or business failures in a candid and irreverent way.
What can you expect? Three or four fuckupreneurs will get up and share their story, including what the project was, what they did wrong, what they learned from it, and what they’d do differently.
Why are we doing this? Because you learn more from failure than success, and we have to shake off the stigma attached to failing – overnight success is often unrealistic.

CIFO’s Director and Curator Eugenio Valdés Figueroa, wants the audience to imagine themselves in Isidore Ducasse’s (Lautréamont) position, when in the late XIX century he emigrated from Uruguay to Paris. We welcome past, present and future supporters of Viophilia to a very special night curated by Ivette Cabrera. Our vision is to keep shifting the realm of the art world and bringing forth the highest quality of boundary pushers, ground breakers and shape shifters that don’t play well by the rules. October marks 3 years of Viophilia; a name which represents the obsession to create. Throughout our time at Viophilia we have had the honor to represent, curate and collaborate with many talented artists ranging from all styles of art forms. This year we want to honor their life and creative strive while honoring those who have influenced their lives but are no longer present.

This years theme“Dia de los Muertos”is a merge between life and death, it is a event that will celebrate both worlds. Artists are encouraged to generate art based on the Dia de los Muertos // Day of the Dead theme. The event will feature art from a few hand selected artists both national and international and a large altar installation created by Viophilia head directors Ivette Cabrera and Francy Freixas which will be in collaboration with pieces brought by artists and guests throughout the night. Guests are welcomed to bring an object or picture that represents an influential person in their lives that have passed away to be included in the large altar installation.

As Miami grows into a major global city and establishes its cultural identity, Young Artists Initiative (YAI), an avant-garde collective of young artists has made it their mission to contribute a unique substance to the landscape of culture and art.

Just like the Impressionists challenged the Académie des Beaux-Arts with their independent exhibitions in 19th Century Paris, or street artists such as Banksy stirred emotion in the streets of London in the 90s, YAI brings together young, forward-thinking artists to shape the face of their growing world-class city.

Calling the burgeoning artistic hubs of Miami their home, their vision is of a Miami recognized for class and connoisseurship in modern art forms, including all various genres that inhabit Miami’s underground, waiting to burst to the surface. Welcome to their vision.

You are cordially invited to the Young Artist Initiative’s first showcase at Cafeina Wynwood on Friday, October 23rd. Event starts at 7:00PM with no cover at the door.

You will witness numerous art installations, live painting performances, a fashion show curated by the creators of the Miami-based blog, Iron N Salt and live music and much more. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to become an active member of the Miami art life!

The Global Sustainability Jam is a 48-hour event where people come together in cities around the globe to create and prototype new products and services around the theme of Sustainability.

Jams are about meeting cool people in your community, practicing design thinking and creative problem-solving methods, and most importantly, having fun! You will learn design-based tools and skills you can apply to your business or any project. These tools are used by Apple, IBM, and other top-notch companies to drive innovation, delight customers, and reduce risk and project costs. In addition to being a fun event, it is excellent professional development.

You don’t need to be ‘creative’ or have experience with design to Jam. In fact we encourage people without these things to join us. You’ll be supported throughout the weekend by your hosts and mentors.

Photographs of the Wynwood Tour of Miami Culinary Tours by Mr Q 305

It is five minutes before noon on a on a hot and humid Saturday and while storm clouds are looming to the west, Gace Della is standing at the entrance of the Wynnwood Walls talking to a tourist-looking gentleman. She is easy to spot, she is dressed all in black and wearing a Miami Culinary Tours sign. I tell her who I am and she tells me to wait by the elephant mural “…we will start exactly at 12:00…almost everyone is here”.

“Everyone” is an eclectic group of South Florida bloggers (from foodies to lifestyle, fashion, beauty and everything in between) gathered by Paola Mendez, creator of the South Florida Bloggers Meetup Group and invited to experience the Wynwwod Tour edition of Miami Culinary Tours.

At 12:00:49 P.M. Grace Della begins the tour. Her passion and depth of knowledge immediately come to the forefront. Her delivery is fast, articulate and enthusiastic. She prepares us for our first stop on the tour: Wynwood Kitchen & Bar.

Wynwood Kitchen & Bar has outdoor seating but it is 92 degrees outside with like 90% humidity and on top of that it looks like a storm is coming. We opt to sit indoors. Wise choice, it is cool and comfortable, they have a large table set up for us and a great IPA beer at each spot waiting to be sampled. They read my mind.

Grace explains about Executive Chef Miguel Aguilar’s Nuevo Cuisine philosophy and goes on to describe what’s in our plate: Chicken Empanada, Cheese Tequeño and Sweet Plantains with Queso Fresco. Very well prepared and exquisitely interpreted Latin street food. An excellent appetizer, it gets me in the right mood. By this time I was ready to keep on eating but there is an art component to the Wynwood Tour and since the menacing storm has not fully materialized we head to the Walls.

I did mention Grace’s knowledge about the art on the Wynwood Walls but it is her passionate delivery that makes it so exciting to hear about the artists and creators behind the art. I must confess that until that moment I had taken the art on the walls for granted. No more.

After a brief visit through the O. Asciano Art Gallery we are in route to our next stop: The R House.

The R House is either a cool restaurant with great art hanging on the walls or an art gallery with a restaurant inside, either way they serve an excellent red wine and Chef Rocco Carulli’s Short Rib Slider and Tuna Tartare are simply off the charts.

The Short Rib slider is braised in a decaffeinated coffee rub, sautéed in a molasses reduction with hot chilli and then put into a brioche bun. If by now you are thinking: “that sounds good”, it is.

The Tuna Tartare is lightly fried in sesame oil with black and white sesame seeds, a sweet chilli glaze and wasabi cream go on top and it all goes atop a fried wonton crisp. Each dish is great by itself but to taste them together is simply sublime. I could stay here but the tour must go on.

Two very long, humid and hot city blocks later we arrive at Pride and Joy, a barbecue joint.

Pulled Pork Texas Toast with Cole Slaw is served on a simple cardboard tray but as simple as it sounds, it is every bit as good as good can get, they have a variety of sauces to enhance the flavor and the pork is moist and soft. If you are on the mood for barbecue, this is the place.

From Pride and Joy we go across the street to SuViche a sushi, ceviche and pisco bar/restaurant.

At SuViche they serve us ceviche (of course), the traditional Peruvian dish. Each dish at SuViche is prepared individually so some patience is required but the freshness and awesome taste is evident on the plate. If you haven’t had ceviche before this is a good place to try it.

Next stop is Made in Italy Gourmet, a combination restaurant, deli and market. It boasts a spacious locale with high ceilings and very interesting décor. Whether by coincidence or design (probably the latter) they serve prosecco and Pecorino al Tartufo which is an Italian, raw, sheep’s milk cheese encrusted with small specks of white and black truffles. It is awesome and it gets us in the right mood for our last stop.

Ah yes!…dessert!… Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop & Café, almost across the street from Made in Italy Gourmet specializes in key lime pie and that is exactly what we get to sample. I can taste each ingredient: the limes, the condensed milk and the graham cracker crust as well as the congruence of all these ingredients, which makes this uniquely Florida dessert such a perennial favorite. You want to stop here.

I would advise to take the Wynwood Tour during the cooler months of November through April. If you consider yourself a foodie, the Wynwood Tour is a must but even if you don’t, it is definitely worth it.

Event features live music and painting, spoken word, an art exhibition, guest speakers and vendors, with all proceeds to be donated to Love the Everglades Movement

The Everglades Awareness Benefit Concert Series is an interactive gathering to share and voice concerns about our ecosystem. This is not a simple show – we are part of a movement that supports protecting our natural resources and human rights! We are working to strengthen our grassroots network and engage members of our community as we work to stop overdevelopment and political corruption! The exploitation of the Everglades effects us all and we need to recognize the damage of oil drilling, fracking and Turkey Point as major issues. We are advocating for more solar usage – this makes sense in the Sunshine State!

At the same time this event will be very entertaining, positive and fun! We can talk about serious issues with informative speakers while enjoying music, spoken word, dance, live art and good people. This is an all ages event because we want to reach out to young people and families. We strive to inspire involvement and participation. Together we make things happen, so join the fun and spread the word!

Every city has its book written in a million different volumes, each with its own author. New York tells stories of a concrete jungle, crawling with those who strive to one day take a chunk of the apple and feast on it for the rest of eternity. Los Angeles with its tales of lost angels flocking from all over the world is heaven for some, purgatory or even hell for others. But what about Miami? What of its book? Time and time again the city has been glamorized by South Beach and its pretty colors. A city supposedly filled with flamingos and peacocks ignores the pigeons and mocking birds that truly call it home. Under the Black Sun Through the Neon Trees will give a voice to a group of native sons telling Miami’s story through their own work. Each artist, different from the next, will own a little piece of this epic volume by adding a chapter to the Magic City.
WYN 317 Gallery is pleased to present Under the Black Sun Through the Neon Trees, a group exhibition curated by Ivan Roque featuring works by Ernesto Maranje, James Livingston, James Brutus, Danny Ferrer and Ivan Roque.

Whether you’re making a blockbuster hit or a nano-budget indie flick, all filmmakers know that matching an actor to the script is crucial to the success of a film. Yes, some directors choose to do it themselves, but the experience and expertise of a casting director is invaluable to the pre-production process. Actors and filmmakers alike are able to maximize creativity and success if a casting director puts the two together correctly.

From how to get the best out of your casting director to finding the right talent agent who will book you in Miami, LA and New York, this is an incredibly valuable workshop that will demystify the process from the complementing perspectives of a group of successful professionals: actor Jordi Vilasuso, casting director/manager Manny Arca, and casting directors Ed Arena and George Ortiz.

If you are an actor in South Florida planning to attend, please bring your headshot and your reel, we are creating an actor archive that we would like to share with our members and the casting directors in attendance.
WHO IS THIS WORKSHOP FOR?

ACTORS
– how to land a contract with an agent
– how to pick the agent that’s right for you
– you have an audition- now what?

FILMMAKERS
– what to look for in a casting director
– how to build relationships with the right casting agents/directors
– how to plan a successful audition process
– offers, contracts, and the business of casting your film

CASTING DIRECTORS
– what does a casting director do?
– seeking talented actors
– network the right way
– picking apart the script; how to choose the right talent for the story

In addition, she has worked as Production Coordinator, directed a few short films, and produced a feature and short films. She has worked on Pain & Gain, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Others & The Wonder Years.

-Set Protocol
-What is the difference between feature films and TV series

-Handling multiple camera shooting
-What block shooting is and how to prepare for it
-Doing continuity on improvised scenes

This lab will fill in any gaps in training you may have, regardless if you have worked on features or short films or have never set foot onto a film set. Useful for the director, actor or any other film professional. Participants interested in becoming Script Supervisors should augment their training with on-set experience as well as observing editors or editing their own work.

We all know that creativity and innovation are inversely related to big budgets. The democratization of technology of recent years has dropped the barrier of entry, providing indie filmmakers with the resources to be successful outside of the Hollywood system. There is nothing stopping you from making a nano budget film, right here in Miami (without needing to resort to criminal activities).

This Workshop Covers:

How to properly plan a low-budget feature

Your film’s saving grace: how to land an angel investor

Shooting a nano-budget feature in Miami

How to work with SAG Actors and non-actors

Time to get noticed: how to successfully market your film

Signing with an agent

Now you have offer: Now What? How to pick the right distribution company

Based on your previous pieces on music I think covering the YAI event is a great fit among your content.

We will be featuring the following creatives along with links to their Soundcloud or Beatport accounts.

Bedside; Made up of Trace Barfield and Travis Acker, their soothing slow-down vibe incorporates elements of modern electronic deejay culture alongside the timeless art of horn instrumentation.

Analog; Reminiscent of a 70’s west-coast highway one cruise bathed in post-grunge rasp, Analog delivers a cross between modern and classical rock-and-roll influences.

Enzo Picardi; Native to Argentina, 21 year-old Enzo Picardi has been producing across the electronic spectrum from a young age.

Harry Andrw; Venezuelan deejay and producer Harry Andrw transcends the electronic music continuums, crafting sounds and tracks that transcend the boundaries of music, presenting them as works of art and culture.

The “fiercely gifted” (New York Times) pianist Sarah Cahill returns to Miami to perform yet another fantastic program. The event is set to celebrate the 80th birthday of Terry Riley, one of the most iconic American composers. Sarah explains: “His music is far more complex and adventurous than people give him credit for, and he has written so much terrific music since In C,” his most infamous opus. Newly commissioned works of four emerging composers (Sam Adams, Danny Clay, Christine Southworth and Dylan Mattingly) are featured together with pieces by Pauline Oliveros, Evan Ziporyn and Juraj Kojs.

Sarah talks about the concert: “What I love about this program is that each composer reflects on Terry Riley’s music but none of the pieces sound like him.  Using a tiny speaker hidden in the piano, Sam Adams creates resonances with sine waves in duet with the pianist.  Evan Ziporyn’s You Are Getting Sleepy gets some of its inspiration from Evan’s work with Balinese gamelan and Ghanaian drumming.  Christine Southworth’s Sparkita and Her Kittens deconstructs a Bollywood soundtrack.  25-year-old Danny Clay’s three-movement Circle Songs shimmers with Terry Riley’s sunny positive California energy, but the resemblances stop there. Pauline Oliveros’ A Trilling Piece for Terry is a structured improvisation, which I have been playing as a duet with whoever is turning pages for that particular concert.  Pauline has known Terry since the 60s when they co-founded the San Francisco Tape Music Center, so it’s particularly meaningful to have a piece by her.”

The concert features a world premiere: Kojs’ In the Mist, a piece also commissioned by Sarah Cahill. The work combines traditional playing and unconventional extended techniques, including the reformulation of pianist’s hands and feet as percussion instruments.

Cookie’s Kid is a solo dance theater work that explores what is inherited muscle memory. Herrera interprets her experience growing up with a-tough-as nails Bronx mother and a counter-revolutionary Cuban refugee father, by delving deeply into ecstatic movement to discover what information her body holds about her cultural history. Exploring iconic cultural references ranging from La Lupe, to Chuck Norris, to Walter Mercado as well as utilizing Afro-Cuban dance and Trance Dance as the framework for movement, Rosie investigates how these seemingly unrelated idols are connected by themes of rebellion, strength, and vulnerability.

Moving Images: Archives To Audience

Unseen films, including South Florida and Caribbean-centric home movies and amateur film “arrangements,” will be screened in a new media exhibition space, The Screening Room on Thursday, April 23 at 7:00 and 8:00 PM in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. Selected from the collections of the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives by artist and guest curator Barron Sherer, the films are 16mm preservation prints, each the end result of laborious and expensive photochemical restoration. Two reels of film will be projected in a diptych – two images running side by side. The silent films will be accompanied by artist David Brieske, who will spin mood and tone-appropriate and experimental musical accompaniment culled from his collection of esoteric LPs.

Illicit Content features works by a group of artists who vividly demonstrate the blurred line between vandalism and street art. What might be considered illegal, like painting on property without permission, becomes an acceptable art form when it attracts admirers and draws commentary about the revitalization of an area or a shabby building. This is true in Wynwood where passionate artists express their creativity for all to see, often pushing the legal boundaries with their graffiti to the point that some artists have paid with their freedom and even their lives.

This exhibit proudly showcases works with seemingly illicit content demonstrating how perception, creative expression and legality collide.

Blueshift Wynwood is pleased to announce Andrew Levitas: Metalwork Playground, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Miami. Levitas, known for his meticulously handcrafted photo-sculptures developed through his patented/trademarked process Metalwork Photography®, has produced a new body of work consisting of recreational playground equipment.
Driven by the desire to express his inner vision in a highly personalized medium, Levitas encourages dialogue on the most pressing concerns of our times: dramatic shifts in America’s political and economic strength, technology and our quest for simplicity, and the rapid depletion of wilderness. Levitas creates an inviting experience through the lens of easily recognized forms (seesaws, swing sets, and merry-go-rounds) and the most cherished and happiest of experiences – childhood playtime that can also translate to adult environments. To further complicate this discussion, the sculptures are crafted following the strictest of design principles in gleaming polished chrome. Their sleekness hints at our need for perfection, immediacy, and our impatience in finding lasting resolutions.
Levitas, who is also a filmmaker and writer, began his fine art practice as a painter and photographer. Finding the medium of photography personally limiting, he developed Metalwork Photography®, a process involving the transfer of photographs onto custom transparencies that are in turn melted onto hand etched metal sheets creating a highly reflective surface. Levitas’s installations take this technique one-step further and are comprised of multi- paneled interlocking metal sheets. Built to scale, the playground equipment sculptures, just like his photographs, can be displayed indoors or outdoors and are completely functional art objects.
Born in New York City, Levitas received his BA from NYU where he currently teaches courses on the creative process. In 2008, the artist was accepted to the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which concluded with an exhibition at the Louvre. In addition to a growing list of American and international exhibitions, his work has garnered attention through top auction houses, museums, and art fairs. Recent highlights include the first ever solo exhibition at Phillips Berkeley Square, London. Levitas also recently wrote and directed the feature film Lullaby staring Garrett Hedlund, Academy Award Nominees Amy Adams, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Anne Archer, and Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. Levitas maintains studios in London, New York and Los Angeles and continues to expand on ideas of engagement and creative expression.

A 1985 graduate of L’Ecole des Beaux Arts, Bénédicte has lived and worked in Miami since 2001. Throughout her career, she has been inspired by one simple yet profound observation: That life is fragile, and yet, it is our knowledge of this that causes us to constantly move through cycles of building up and tearing down, rising and falling. Her work is all about movement, energy and capturing fleeting moments. Her work is all about life. Her work is all about you.

Street Festival Brings The Best of Wynwood to Life!

Wynwood Life is back and packed with everything that Miami loves. The colorful, annual event is all about art, music, fashion and food. This year’s new location will feature more artists, fashion shows, art displays, musical bands, interactive features and a new collaborative cooking showcase that will highlight popular Wynwood restaurants and chefs.

A wide selection of featured artists will be organized by world renowned painter Alexander Mijares, who will also design the festival’s 2015 collective poster. For the first time ever, Mijares will have a pop-up gallery showcasing his unique style of art, which finds inspiration in the colorful energy of both this city and heritage. “It’s unusual to have an artist of his caliber showcasing at a festival. Wynwood Life is a great place to see him in action, and while you’re there, be sure to pick up an original work of art,” said Javi Zayas, co-founder of SWARM, the organizer behind the festival.

The Peroni Style Lounge will once again feature fashionistas at their pop-up boutique, and during the event, it will showcase multiple fashion shows with local boutiques, fashion bloggers and stylists.

It wouldn’t be Wynwood without Food Trucks, so the festival will have the biggest food truck rally ever with over 50 favorites and a number of food vendors ready to please all taste buds. In addition, the event has partnered with Wynwood neighbor, Miami Club Rum. Several bars will be equipped with the hand-crafted rum made in Miami’s first distillery by artisans with a family history of rum production that dates back five generations. Beer lovers rejoice! The Blue Moon Brew Pub will be back with a fully stocked selection of cold brews and mixed drinks. New this year is the Wynwood Culinary Showcase, which will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area showcasing their cuisine. Wynwood Life is sponsored by Miami Club Rum

This year’s musical line-up is bigger and better, featuring many local favorites including Problem Kidz, Spam Allstar, Suenalo, The Tremends, Danger Flow and Elastic Bond to name a few. For a complete schedule of performances, click on Live Music at www.WynwoodLife.com.

What is a blood moon? A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth passes between the sun and the moon. In a blood moon, the moon is full, and as the sun’s light passes through the earth’s atmosphere, it casts a reddened shadow on the moon. Full lunar eclipses are rare, and blood moons even more so, but neither is unheard of. The next total Lunar Eclipse will occur on April 4th, 2015…

Future Painting, is the culmination of 4 years of research into video mapped paintings and will feature various approaches to integrating video and technology into mixed-media collage paintings. Through the use of video projections on top of physical paintings and translucent collages created directly on the face of video screens, Justin Wood transforms and twists the physical composition into a mesmerizing psychedelic experience. These works challenge the viewers perception of where the physical world ends and where the digital world begins and asks the question, Can painting and video exist at the same time? The show will also feature a site specific interactive wall painting that will respond to the depth and motion of the viewer through the use of a Kinect sensor, and allow the viewer to transform the video with their movement.

Now at its sixth edition, we are proud to say BarCamp Miami got even better in every way.

It’s not your traditional talking heads technology conference. Everyone is expected to participate in some way: by giving a talk, asking questions, or organizing a session.

BarCamp fosters collaboration — matching technologists with designers, with engineers, and with angel investors. BarCamp brings people together who understand what new technology means for Miami’s future.

Marco Fusi, the Italian violist par excellence presents a program of the 21st-century Italian music for viola and for viola and cello with the Miami-based Jason Calloway.

Fusi believes that music unveils “something really mysterious and unpredictable” via a performer. Most of the programmed works are a result of personal collaboration with the composer: “Working together is the best way to learn about music, about yourself and about other points of view,” claims Fusi, pointing to the importance of expanding one’s musical horizons. Fusi is excited about musing the personal with professional. It is, in fact, the first time he will perform with the cellist Jason Calloway—his long-time friend and the new music string champion in Miami.

The program includes several US premieres and a World premiere by Luciano Chessa, that engages some curious “seasonal” items. Fusi is excited about sharing a diverse sample of contemporary Italian music with the South Florida audiences, offering a rare aural look “through a window the contemporary Italian soundscape.”

About the artist
Marco Fusi, violinist, violist and composer studied with Dimitrios Polisoidis, Ernst Kovacic and Jeanne-Marie Conquer. Marco has performed with conductors and soloists including Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, Peter Eötvös , Beat Furrer, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gustav Kuhn, Jürg Wyttenbach, Jean Deroyer, and Marco Angius. He has premiered new works by composers Castiglioni, Eötvös, Sciarrino, Vacchi, and Cattaneo, among others. Marco has had the opportunity to perform concerts in renowned halls such as the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, KKL Konzertsaal in Lucerne, Beyond Baroque in Los Angeles, Experimental Intermedia in NYC, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, and the Béla Bartók Concert Hall in Budapest. Marco has collaborated with Ensemble Algoritmo (Rome), Interface (Frankfurt), Proton (Bern), Linea (Strasbourg), Phoenix (Basel), l’Arsenale (Treviso), MotoPerpetuo (NYC), Ecce (Boston), and Handwerk (Köln). His complete recording of John Cage’s Freeman Etudes was released by Stradivarius; he has been invited to present this project, giving concerts, masterclasses and lectures at University of Southern California, Arizona State University, and the Milan Conservatory. Marco was a member of Lucerne Festival Academy from 2007 to 2012, under the artistic and musical direction of Pierre Boulez.

Wynwood wall art and artists are reaching an all time fever pitch and Wall Brawl will be showcasing exactly that. Join us and see first hand how some of the most recognizable street artists do what they do best, as they battle it out and raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The fact that the Oxygen Channel has started airing their new TV show “Street Art Throwdown”, specifically on street art, is only compounding how hot this trend has become.

Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to watch some of the biggest names in street art go face to face and compete for the title of the Best Street Artist of Miami.
Open bar by Bombay Sapphire and Zacapa Rum with lite bites by Morgans for all those attending as you place your vote for your favorite artist and we auction off their pieces.

At Wall Brawl Miami we will be auctioning off the pieces to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities as a silent auction. What his means is that recognized artists will be donating their time and art to help raise money. Art enthusiasts and art collectors will have a unique opportunity to acquire a piece from a recognized artists that would normally go for tens of thousands, at any given gallery, for pennies on the dollar. Our silent auction has no reserve and creates a very unique opportunity to be able to buy original, one-of-a-kind pieces by some of the top artists, starting at $1.00 dollar.

Artists include : HecOne Love, Skott Marsi, Bruno Vago, Furious (DAM Crew), KEDS (DAM Crew), Monique Lassooij, Claudia La Bianca, TeePop, NateD, Wilson, Jorge-Miguel Rodriguez, Ill Surge, GG, Atomik, Ivan Roque, Registered Artist, Aquarela Allyson Sabol, Nicole Salgar, Rigo Leon, Kazilla, Trek 6

Every year in March my partners and I always do a big, art related exposition and this is what we have chosen to produce this year. Our goal has always been to make Miami a major contender in the art world outside of Art Basel. Our belief has always been that Miami has a cultural and artistic backbone that only now is being recognized by everyone else.

The success and news of our expositions have garnered us worldwide attention and always in the month of March, so there is no association with Art Basel. Don’t just take my word for it you can very easily Google: Dali Miami and Haring Miami. There is an underlying story here waiting to get out.

This year we decided to turn our focus to home because we need the world to know that Miami is a hot bed for talented artists. Wynwood graffiti and wall art has reached an all time fever pitch. People from all over the world are coming to our little neighborhood just to check out this incredible symbiosis between property owners of buildings in Wynwood and graffiti artists. Business owners are now looking for artists to team up with so they can make their store fronts a piece of art that people will walk or drive around too and see. Business owners are incorporating their signs and business logos with the art to garner more attention and foot traffic.

Admission is only $40.00 and it includes music, open bar as well as lite bites. The brawl will take place March 6, 2015 from 7pm-10pm at The Annex located at 44 NE 29 ST in Wynwood. Space is limited and this being one of the most unique events in Miami it will sell out soon. Pre-sale tickets are already underway, get your tickets on line before we reach capacity at WallBrawlMiami .

The Reunion: Exhibition Opening at Bakehouse Art Complex on Friday, February 13, 2015.

Audrey Love Gallery: The Reunion

“The Bakehouse Art Complex opened in 1987 in the former Art Deco American Bakeries Company building in today’s Wynwood Arts District, by a group of artists relocating from Coconut Grove. These artists founded the nonprofit Bakehouse Art Complex and repurposed the industrial building into working studios and galleries, ensuring a permanent venue for local artists to explore their creativity.

This exhibition celebrates the 29-year history of the Bakehouse, which has seen over one thousand resident artists and continued success as a stakeholder in the ever-growing Miami arts environment. The selection of artists included in the 2,600 square-foot Audrey Love Gallery show reflects the 29-year history of the Bakehouse and its role as an incubator for art careers – and the rise of the visual arts – in Miami over the years. Exhibition highlights include an opening reception, innovative art talk-concert hybrid presented in partnership with IlluminArts, a puppetry master class with Pablo Cano, and a closing reception. Confirmed artists include: Pablo Cano, Xavier Cortada, Veronica Garcia, Suza Talbot, Maggie Davis, Carrie Sieh, Patricia Schnall Gutierrez, Christian Bernard, Ross Ford, Beatricia Sagar, Luis Diaz, John La Huis, Tracey Hagen, Richard Labarbera, Juan Griego, Maria Sonia Martin, Robert Apfel, Marcos Valella, Gustavo Oviedo, Armando Chagon, Henry Mar.”

The 12 Nights Electronics and Music series welcomes Jarek Kapuscinski, an innovative intermedia composer.
Jarek Kapuscinski is an intermedia composer and pianist whose work has been presented at New York’s MOMA; ZKM in Karlsruhe; Centre Pompidou in Paris; and Reina Sofia Museum in Marid, among others. He has received awards at the UNESCO Film sur l’Art festival in Paris, VideoArt Festival Locarno, and FNCNM in Montréal. He was first trained as a pianist and composer at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and expanded into multimedia during studies at the University of California, San Diego (1992-1997). Currently, he is Assistant Professor of composition and intermedia at Stanford University.

Kapuscinski is a musician, but his music is audiovisual. “It is made of sounds and images and more importantly with their relationship over time. I am interested in the emergent in-between – the intermedia,” says Kapuscinski. His pieces indeed emerge from the formalization of the elemental and the pure. “The piece is finished not when there is nothing more that I can add but rather, when there is nothing left to be removed. “ He believes in a thoughtful process of elimination of non-essential elements, aspiring to achieve a transparent and spacious form, that can generate complex emotional response. It is through the synthesis of complexity and simplicity that the stepping stone narratives (made of simple, haiku-like moments) mediate a rich experience. Kapuscinski is not shy to express positive feelings of joy, love, wholeness, goodness and transcendence. “I embrace everyday, familiar emotions and musical language that invokes them. There is richness and profoundness to be found in the common and seemingly simple.”

The program presents a retrospective of Kapuscinski’s works. It stretches from Mondrian Variations, an early work that defined my interest in composing with sounds and images both conceived simultaneously, “painted on a single canvas” to Where is Chopin a recent fascination with micro-expressions in faces of people from around the world as they listen to music. The first one was a result of rather solitary process while the latter involved travel to 12 different countries and private one on one sessions with over 150 people.  Each of the works has a rich story of its making. Having no space (or time) for that, I can probably say just a few words about the creative interests that unite them all.
