Miami, Fl. Portugal Tropical is an art exhibition that brings to Miami an approach to the work of three prominent Portuguese contemporary artists, who carry out their artistic views in different expressive ways but are bounded by the exoticism and sensuality of the tropics. A selection of paintings by Pedro Calapez, landscapes by Monica Miranda and ceramic sculptures by Maria Ana Vasco Costa are the core of the exhibition curated by Alda Galsterer and Veronica de Mello in Merzbau Gallery (Wynwood, Miami) from June 9th.
Calapez’ color palette proposes an approach to the tropics with expressive and dynamic lines, from the perspective of this Lusitanian artist. Meanwhile, the photographic images of landscapes delicately embroidered by Miranda offers a reading through a visual fabric that unites tropical wild nature, with a human hand holding the knitting needle. The subtle strength of Vasco Costa ceramics, remembers us that tropics also has an urban side that lives in a symbiotic way with forests, mountains and rivers.
The confluence of these artistic proposals, bonded together with an organic line by the curators, parts by the influence that Portugal receives from the tropics since years ago: music, food, dances and traditions from Africa and America, part of this country’s memories, enriched and nourished. Portuguese contemporary artists can prove it.
For Arsen Wannissian and Glauco Avila, both founders and directors of Merzbau Gallery hosting this exhibition felt very natural, but was always a very important project to achieve. Merzbau is a space dedicated to showcase an innovative program that promotes diversity in the arts, as an intense cultural exchange in our city. The exhibition is presented in partnership with REDE, a contemporary art agency that works within the artistic community in countries such as, Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Macau, Mozambique, São Tome and Principe, bringing a new perspective in the art market. Merzbau has been positioned as an international platform for curatorship and artists all over the world.
Miami, known as a cultural melting pot, seems to be the right stage for this exhibition. “We hope our city received this proposal with enthusiasm, and take this unique opportunity to see the tropical light through the eyes of these talented Portuguese artists” Wannissian said.

“There is no invention in painting, no true creation. There is an unfolding and unveiling of color and form. There is a reshaping of the raw and inanimate material of paint.” – Daniel Domig, 2014

The title of the show is shared with a new installation that runs along and around the center wall of the gallery. The structure is made of individually colored wooden bars which are constructed into a hollow wall on which several paintings are hanging. The installation plays off the architecture of the space as well as reminding us of the stretchers behind the paintings themselves. As Domig’s beautifully obscure paintings have a tendency to escape into the blurriness of their own shapes and colors, the wooden construction becomes the anchor by stabilizing these hovering canvases.

All of the artist’s installations have always attempted to lay bare the experience of looking at art as well as the conditions needed for immersing oneself in it. They also serve to bridge the gap that is left when the paintings leave the uncertainties of the studio, and are placed within the sterile, white-box environment of the gallery.

A handmade installation must literally turn the gallery space into a temporary workshop. There is a certain oddness to seeing paintings on a makeshift scaffolding which surprisingly often provokes a new encounter with them.

In the artist’s own words: “Painting is a process. A thickening of the visible that is agitated by an appearance of forms, lines and shapes. Every mark not so much in addition to, but in fundamental transformation of all preceding ones. As this process continues, there is an increasing tension between painter and painting. Material has its stubborn qualities, the composition its own logic. Like a parent bringing up a child, the painter must avoid imposing his own vision onto the empty canvas, and come to terms with guiding a living organism that has a mind of its own”.

In the 1940s, segregation was commonplace, but several Historians credit swing dance and music for leading the way to integration, bridging the gaps between communities. South Florida Lindy Collective (SFLC) aims to bridge gaps that continue to exist today. Swing dance instruction will encourage attendees to meet their neighbors, rotate partners, and make new friends to build a stronger sense of community.

Also on Swyngwood’s jam-packed agenda:
– The Pitbull of Blues Band performing rockabilly and blues to keep the party hopping.
– Burlesque performances by Miss Jenna Beth and Candy Muldune showcasing the class and sass of yesteryear.
– View Swyngwood’s Inaugural Rat Rod Car Exhibition, curated by Russ G Events and Miami Movie Cars
– Try our signature Swyngwood Ale or O.G., carefully crafted by Infected Brewery*

Sprung! Spring Beer Festival 2016

This year’s Sprung! Spring Beer Festival had a new home: and old RC Cola Plant in Wynwood (Miami)! Sounds sexy, right? But it makes perfect sense with the craft beer boom in Wynwood. Wynwood Brewing is across the street and Concrete Beach and J. Wakefield Brewing are just a few blocks away. And after a super soggy and muddy Grovetoberfest a few months ago, it’s cool that this one changed venues to a concrete base!

My wife and I arrived promptly on time, one of my best virtues! First stops, J. Wakefield and Concrete Beach, right next to each other. And we hit Wynwood Brewing shortly after, duh, locals first! I was actually sporting about a month of unkempt beard and an unruly head of hair so I could fit in with the Wynwood brewers (along with MANY others). My wife hated that, so call it a sacrifice!

Along with the Wynwood favorites, lots of other local and Florida breweries were representing: MIA, Big Storm, Barrel of Monks, Hatuey, Coppertail to name a few. There were also dozens of awesome must stops at every beer festival. Founders, Green Flash (including that awesome Alpine Brewing), Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas (thanks to the girl there that helped me kill the Apple update out of nowhere), Saint Arnold and Sweetwater to name just a few.

Cooking and beer demos, a really nice lineup of food trucks (yum, roasted corn on the cob), fun games including one that reminded me of the sweeper arm in that show WipeOut, homebrewers, a fun band, and of course the VIP Area. For me, the VIP area compared to prior years was a little different. We thought (and overheard many similar remarks) that the food part was a bit of a letdown while the VIP beer offerings were a major upgrade. Think Black Ops and some rare sours and other specialty options, was great. And the VIP area also offered some shady relief on a super angry hot day!

We saw some old friends and made new ones. I also took pictures of some really cool t-shirts the attendees were wearing! Check those out and the photo album below. I’m definitely a fan of the new location too! A must drink Miami event! See you next year!

These two organizations have joined forces to produce “Secret Doors,” a fine art show that will proudly feature 15 of South Florida’s best street artists and muralists to benefit ArtCares for Kids.

Sponsored by The Florida House Experience, VITAS Healthcare, Artist & Craftsman Supply, Aventura Mall and others, the show will feature family friendly street- and mural-style artwork.

The opening will feature games and hands-on art activities designed to engage patrons with the exhibits. Persons of all ages—from 2 to 102—are welcome to enjoy complementary light bites and age-appropriate beverages, including sponsored adult beverages provided by Peroni beer, with an open bar from 6 to 8 p.m., and a cash bar from 8 to 10 p.m.

A portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to ArtCares for Kids, a Miami-based organization that takes art activities to children undergoing cancer and other intensive medical treatments at Jackson Memorial Holtz Children’s Hospital and Baptist Children’s Hospital. ArtCares for Kids will receive copies of a special coloring book comprised of the artwork being shown at the event. The “Secret Doors,” coloring book will be given to these children in an effort to raise their spirits and occupy their hands with bedside art projects.

With the increasing number of new digital technologies, is it a surprise that everything is being disrupted, most importantly distribution practices? Audience consumption habits are changing and we can argue that film distribution is shifting from a supply-led to a demand-led market.
There is also an abundance of content which is only matched by the complete accessibility to it, anytime, anywhere, the options are endless. There are no barriers to distribution, only to awareness and engagement. You need to allocate time and resources to engage people with your work. This is the workshop to help you learn how to independently distribute and be an entrepreneurial filmmaker.

Topics Will Include But Not Limited To:
– Armed with a good story and good storytelling skills, you should be able to profit if you know how to take responsibility for your creation, how do you do that?
– How to adapt to an ever-changing industry that requires great creativity as well as business savvy?
– How do you utilize the virtually endless avenues of self-distribution, like VODs, iTunes, YouTube, and Vimeo (just to name a few)?
– How do you create your own theatrical release or should you bypass it all together?

Meet our Speaker: Ricki Cikowski
Rick co-produced and edited the PGA Nominated, crowd-sourced, theatrical documentary Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and it can currently be seen on Netflix.
Rick Cikowski is a co-founder of the Corner of the Cave Media. Rick has directed some of today’s biggest names in music, sports and entertainment including 50 Cent, Q-Tip, Kid Ink, Pitbull, Ludacris, Gary Sinise, Tyrese Gibson, Grandmaster Flash, Kobe Bryant, Jae Crowder and Lawrence Timmons to name a few.
He was also recently editor on History Channel’s highly acclaimed 2-hr special Alcatraz: Search for the Truth and was executive producer, co-director and lead editor on Real Change: Artists for Education which aired on CBS in 2014. Rick was also the editor for Behind The Music: Ludacris and BTM Nicole Scherzinger, which was shot/edited/produced/written through the Cave and aired on VH1.

March Madness begins at our new location for Secret Garden, just behind the RC Cola Plant we discovered a perfect little cove.

We’ve always been inspired of the grittiness and realness of Detroit, so we went on the search of discovery. What we found was an urban oasis, with tall concrete walls and laden with the artistic language of the streets… Graffiti. We are capturing the essence of this powerful space and transforming into our own concrete garden. Music will be at the forefront as we present some of Miami’s most talented music selectors showcasing an array of musical styles aimed at defining this space that is truly underground in its nature. The focus will be on the aesthetic of an urban environment, as Siglo Events will be unveiling new murals that will further elevate the space. Come and visit a very special new location that has us extremely excited for what is yet to come. Remember… its only a secret, if you keep it!

Event is strictly 21+

The Young Artist Initiative presents a new partnership with Cafeina Miami. The second Young Artist Initiative at Cafeina Wynwood Lounge is Friday, March 4th with an incredible lineup of musicians, installations, live performances, exhibits, and more!

As a race, we live in a continuum of constant evolution. Countless minds have brought forth change to consciousness and culture and have moved our societies forward, restructuring the dynamics of our generations.

The ever-growing presence of technology in our daily lives has transcended the nature of a “trend” and has come to resemble a strong pillar in the structure of our approach to the life before us. It has changed the way we create, interact, and coexist, and has consequentially brought change to art.

For the next installment of the Young Artist Initiative, we have carefully selected technology and its cultural stigmas as the concept base for live art and activations.

All artists have been presented with the challenge of addressing technology’s role and impact on the arts across their selected mediums and comprehensively blending visual and metaphorical elements in order to present a personal interpretation of the matter.

We invite you to enjoy and ponder the reflection of Miami’s Collective of Young Artists on Friday, March 4th at Cafeina Miami at 7 p.m.

FuckUp Nights Miami invites you to meet Cristian F. Robiou, acting Chief Operating Officer for Startupbootcamp – Digital Health + Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Caribé Exotic Juice Co., Serge E. Charles, Director of Sales for Caribe Exotic Juice Co., Alex Shapiro, co-founder of ORTEAS and Ricardo Zavala, Chief Executive Officer for Pasion del Cielo Coffee Company. Join these successful entrepreneurs as they break free from the stigmas surrounding “failure” and communicate failure as a positive step everyone must overcome on the road to greatness.

SPECIALTY COCKTAIL DRINKS BY ORTEAS, CARIBE JUICE, AMBHAR TEQUILA AND BLACKWELL RUM + LITE BITES

What are FuckUp Nights? FuckUp Nights is a monthly event where awesome people talk about one of their biggest professional or business failures in a candid and irreverent way.

What can you expect? Three or four fuckupreneurs will get up and share their story, including what the project was, what they did wrong, what they learned from it, and what they’d do differently.

Why are we doing this? Because you learn more from failure than success, and we have to shake off the stigma attached to failing – overnight success is often unrealistic.

SPECIAL THANKS TO: SAMMER GALLERY

Enjoy the release of Que Quat, a Kumquat Berliner Weisse and winner of Concrete Beach’s last What Brews You contest, submitted by Will Isaacson. Que Quat is a Florida take on a German tradition. Berliner Weisse beers are refreshing and tart, from the influence of lactobacillus during fermentation. This beer will touch on those points with the addition of the delicious overtone of kumquat. Beer lovers in Germany often add flavored syrups to this style of beer to balance the flavor. Concrete Beach Brewery will feature a syrup bar with two kegs of regular Berliner Weisse, so guests can mix and match to suit their tastes. The event will also celebrate the kick-off of the next What Brews You? contest, which begins on February 1st.

de la Cruz Collection: You’ve Got to Know the Rules to Break Them – Art Basel Miami Beach 2015 12/1/15 – 12/5/15

de la Cruz Collection: “You’ve Got to Know the Rules.. to Break Them” – Art Basel Miami Beach 2015

23 N.E. 41st Street
Miami, FL 33137

The de la Cruz Collection presents their 2016 exhibition “You’ve Got to Know the Rules…to Break Them.” Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz have selected a group of artists from their personal collection who have been associated with defining 21st century practice. Self-aware of the influence that technology and the rise of consumerism has had on their work, artists exhibited follow the cool forms of Minimalism, Conceptualism and Abstract Expressionism, while injecting their works with subtle negations of their own process. Looking at traditional techniques behind painting and sculpture, these works co-exist timelessly as strategies of stylistic appropriation raise questions of subjectivity and originality.

“You’ve Got to Know the Rules…to Break Them” contextualizes New American Abstraction with German Neo-Expressionism, revealing earnest explorations of the artists technical acumen. Through experimentation, they antagonize accepted practices by drawing upon a variety of themes including cultural, historical and sociopolitical modes.

Per contra, the third floor contains a study in portraiture and memory with the works of Félix González-Torres, Ana Mendieta and Rob Pruitt. By transforming everyday objects and using energetic gestures and repetition, González-Torres, Mendieta and Pruitt accept diverse ideologies and reject the notion that art has a single vantage point.

By merging a variety of styles and mediums, the works selected for this year’s exhibition mirror contemporary culture while allowing an open-ended conversation of various interpretations and possibilities. Artist in the exhibition: Allora & Calzadilla, Tauba Auerbach, Walead Beshty, Mark Bradford, Joe Bradley, Dan Colen, Matt Connors, Martin Creed, Aaron Curry, Peter Doig, Jim Drain, Isa Genzken, Félix González-Torres, Mark Grotjahn, Wade Guyton, Rachel Harrison, Arturo Herrera, Evan Holloway, Thomas Houseago, Alex Israel, JPW3, Jacob Kassay, Alex Katz, Martin Kippenberger, Glenn Ligon, Michael Linares, Nate Lowman, Adam McEwen, Ana Mendieta, Albert Oehlen, Gabriel Orozco, Jorge Pardo, Manfred Pernice, Sigmar Polke, Seth Price, Rob Pruitt, Sterling Ruby, Analia Saban, Josh Smith, Reena Spaulings, Rudolf Stingel, Cosima von Bonin, Guyton/Walker, Kelley Walker, Christopher Wool.
