Voyage to the Orient and to another parallel universe of Dragons, Wizards and Thrones, Oh My…

February 7th 2015 marks the latest fairy tale chapter in the Florida Renaissance Festival storybook revealing six themed weekends until March 15 at Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park. Where patrons fill storylines as immersive characters experiencing surreal experiences by festival performers and characters.

“Living, breathing theater is what you experience at the Florida Renaissance Festival,” said Bobby Rodriguez, Founder. “Everyday is a new experience, everyday is a passport to a journey complete with fairytale and fantasy.”

New acts in the 2015 festival season- Cast in Bronze will bring the haunting beauty of the carillon to more patrons by demonstrating its versatility with other instruments. The carillons of Cast in Bronze consist of 35 bells each with a total of four tons each.

Cirque du Sewer is the world’s only girl and rat circus performing feats of balance with her impressively trained vermin. The rats jump through flaming hoops, complete obstacle courses, and join Melissa on her slack rope for a death-defying finale.

Fan favorites also return to the festival – While cracking bullwhips, juggling bowling balls or eating fire “Broon” keeps the laughs alive with a dry wit and an extemporaneous style that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. Craic is a 4-piece earth moving, themed drama using heavy percussions and medieval bagpipes to create a boisterous musical performance. Splatter Time Players are a group of young men who have dedicated their lives to two things: Mud & Entertainment. Flight of the Raptor features the beauty of flight and is designed to educate, enlighten, and sometimes even amaze audiences with a large cast of predator birds including falcons and hawks.

2015 Theme Weekends:

* Swashbucklers & Sirens Weekend- February 7 and 8 – The village is overrun with rogues and scallywags on this Pirate-themed weekend. Can beauty tame the savage scoundrel? Hopefully we will see enough pirate queens and mermaids to find out!

* Time Travelers Weekend- February 14, 15 and 16 – Calling all adventurers from across the millennia! This weekend is for you! Bring our your brassiest Victorian “gears” and join us on “Steampunk Saturday.” On Sunday, no one will keep the Doctors away…be they one of the 12 or Doc Brown himself, the village opens itself up to time travelling pioneers, aliens, Browncoats, Federations and Empires. And don’t miss Cosplay Monday, where anything goes! Anime? Superheroes?

* Wenches Weekend – “Bodacious Bodices” – February 21 and 22 – Pamper your inner bad-girl this weekend, where the ladies are the lords and rule the land. Bold and bawdy, this weekend belongs to the lasses and their ample assets.

* Voyage to the Orient- February 28 and March 1 – This weekend brings us to the Far East! While Europe was experiencing the advent of the Renaissance, rich cultural traditions had been prominent for centuries on the other side of the world. Journey with us to discover the Orient of Marco Polo’s time and experience the sights and sounds of Shogun, Samurai, and the unbroken Ming dynasty that ruled China for almost 300 years.

* Dragons & Wizards and Thrones, Oh My! – March 7 and 8 – One does not simply walk into Mordor, but you can walk directly out of the pages of your favorite books! From the Red Wedding to the Shire, join us as we fill our village with Hobbits, Wizards, Dragons, White Walkers, Fairies and Elves.

* Kilts & Colleens – St Patrick’s Weekend – March 14 and 15 – Celebrate the luck and culture of the Irish, the Scottish and the Celtic traditions of the North Seas! Grab your kilt and get your Celt on! Show your Celtic pride!

The Florida Renaissance Festival is produced by the nationally acclaimed Bobby Rodriguez Productions and strives to create an entertaining and cultural experience for adults and children alike. The sponsors of the Florida Renaissance Festival include Walgreens, Comcast, Warsteiner Beer, Coca-Cola, Broward County Transit and Community Bank.

The Florida Renaissance Festival at Deerfield Beach’s Quiet Waters Park will be open weekends beginning February 7th from 10 a.m. to sunset (including, Monday February 16th, President’s Day) until March 15th. These activities are part of the organization’s “Man Drive” to recruit more male volunteers. While all volunteers are welcomed, BBBS is particularly interested in male volunteers at this time in order to help reduce the waiting list of boys in need of mentors.

By understanding and taking healthy measures to eradicate Cultural Stress, each person can dramatically increase his or her odds of unlocking their personal potential to look younger, feel younger and live healthier, happier and more rewarding lives.”

Photographs by Anthony Jordon of Average Joe Art Sale and Annette’s 50th Birthday Party at Yo Space on 1/4/15

Photographs taken by Anthony Jordon of Average Joe Art Sale and Annette’s 50th Birthday Party at Yo Space on Sunday, January 4, 2015.  What a wonderful way to celebrate my 50th birthday, surrounded by amazing friends and beautiful art. The Average Joe Art Sales had visiting artists along with their resident artists selling limited edition prints, original art and wonderful merchandise ranging from $5.00 to $500.00, so you can find something no matter your budget.  While you are there, you can visit with the resident artists and see what they are currently working on in their studio. To make it even better they donated 10% of all sales to a non-profit organization , this month it was Life Is Art, Inc.

About YO: “Founded in April 2011, what began as a passion for art, music and Miami has evolved into a force to be reckoned with in the local scene. Bringing together creatives from all walks of life, we strive to shine a light on the elements of Miami culture that should be recognized and celebrated. The company was born on a Facebook page and to this day that’s where content is most frequently updated/uploaded to. The website is a great resource for it’s Event Calendar to keep you up to date on what’s going on in advance, and also for the Blog section where you can read everything from artist interviews to philosophical ramblings.”

RAGTIME is a sweeping musical portrait of early 20th century America tells the powerful tale of a white, upper-middle class family, an African American couple, and an Eastern European immigrant escaping to America with his daughter, as they all confront the timeless contradictions of wealth, poverty, freedom, prejudice, hope, and despair in pursuit of the American Dream. Unfolding through the fiery rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley, and the vibrant klezmer of the Lower East Side, this vivid and unforgettable Tony-winning score bursts onto the stage “on the wheels of a dream” in what will be the largest and most epic production ever staged at Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre.

Former Miami Heat player, Shane Battier and his wife Heidi, continue to give back to the community they call home by hosting the fourth annual “South Beach Battioke” on March 3rd, 8 p.m. at the Fillmore Theatre in Miami Beach – a star-studded, karaoke charity event where attendees include Miami’s elite, philanthropists and socialites while watching their favorite Miami Heat stars live out their pop star fantasies, all for a great cause.
“We are proud that we have been able to engage our community and send brilliant young minds to colleges and universities through the fundraising efforts of South Beach Battioke,” said Shane Battier, Founder of The Battier Take Charge Foundation. “This will be our fourth year putting together the most authentic and entertaining event in South Florida. I am extremely thankful to the Heat organization and everyone that supports us including my former teammates that come out and sing karaoke for charity.”
“Our partnership with the Battier Take Charge Foundation means the world to us here at Big Brothers Big Sisters. Together, we are making sure our kids are “Taking Charge” of their lives through positive mentoring relationships, high school graduation, and post-secondary education,” said Deborah Perez, Continuing Education Manager at Big Brothers Big Sisters. “The commitment the Foundation has to our youth is invaluable and in partnership, we are helping to develop the next generation of “Champions.”
“The Battier Take Charge Foundation has given me the torch of success that I will carry enthusiastically across the finish line. Thank you for the personal investment, I love the organization and its positive impact on shaping America’s future leaders,” said David Green, current student at University of Florida and 2012 scholar recipient of The Battier Take Charge Foundation.
Notable past karaoke participants include Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Pat Riley, James Jones, Norris Cole, Udonis Haslem, Greg Oden, Jimmy Buffet, Gabrielle Union and Ken Jeong. Last year’s event was attended by over 600 people and raised more than $300,000 dollars. This year’s event aims to shatter that record, yet again, with funds raised through ticket sales, auction items and sponsorships.
“South Beach Battioke” 2015 is an annual event that raises funds and awareness for The Battier Take Charge Foundation, a non-profit organization established by Shane and his wife, Heidi. The foundation awards college scholarships to underprivileged high school students in Miami, Houston and Detroit. The foundation partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, KIPP Academy in Houston and Horizon Upward Bound in Detroit by empowering our future young leaders to “Do Well, Do Good,” the phrase that serves as the motto of the foundation and the Battier family.
Tickets to the “South Beach Battioke” 2015 are currently on-sale and are available for purchase at www.takechargefoundation.org. Advanced purchase tickets are significantly discounted at $175 per person. Admission at the door is $250. First 100 general admission tickets sold will receive a personalized Shane Battier autograph. The story of a South Beach legend

Walk to the Fifth Street lifeguard stand on South Beach at 5:15 pm any day. You will see a bearded, long-haired shirtless man wearing black shorts, one black glove, and a headband that’s black, too. People call him the “Raven,” and he’s been standing in front of that lifeguard stand at that time for the last forty years, getting ready for his eight-mile jog up and down the beach. That’s right—Raven has run eight miles on the sands of South Beach every day since 1975, through concussions, hurricanes, food poisoning, animal attacks, hail and high water. And he’s still going.

This event will feature:

A reading of poetry written by the Raven himself
Screening of the feature documentary
Invitation to join the Raven on his famous 8 mile run on the beach following the film at 4:15 PM

The form is still so new that it can feel like a bit of a mystery. This workshop will answer questions like:

What are the key steps in conceiving and creating immersive media projects?
What are the phases and what activities happen in each of them?
What tools do you use in each phase?
What are the types of team members you need and how do you find them?
The workshop will commence with a hands-on paper prototyping exercise where we put what we’ve discussed to use.

This workshop is limited to 20 attendees. Creators should come with a project that they are working on (as well as a laptop/tablet if they wish).

MELANCHOLALALAND

It’s the 21st century, and time to re-invent opera, but in a way that’s more fun, less pretentious, and a little messed up.

MelanchoLalaland™—with music by composer and Florida Atlantic University professor Joey Bargsten and libretto by writer Thea Zimmer—accomplishes this by fusing traditional elements of opera, theater, and dance with new and experimental visual media forms, all set to an electronic music score. MelanchoLalaland™ tells the dark tragi-comic story of three artist/engineers who design mind-altering experiences, enhanced by self-pleasuring technologies and a variety of brain chemicals. They deal with disgruntled employees, corporate takeovers, dissatisfied girlfriends, and cheesy space-aliens.

A PROPER MARRIAGE

Concept / Choreography: Pioneer Winter

A Proper Marriage is a speculative piece that comments on the perceived co-dependence of music and movement, especially live music with dance–underlying properties of a dancer’s dependence on composition, and the musician’s own foresight to create action from sound. Sheet music is attached to the backs of dancers, and the musicians follow the dancer in order to read the music and maintain the melody. Irony rests in the notion that if the dancer moves too quickly and the musician cannot keep up, the music will falter and the dancer’s own rhythm will stop.

Pioneer Winter is a Miami-native choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker of Pioneer Winter / Collective. He is co-director of RIFT Blackbox and the curator of transmedia performances for FilmGate Interactive Media Conference. Winter also directs Project LEAP (Living Equality through Arts and Performance), a free dance and creative communication program for LGBTQ teens that focuses on teaching how to use the arts for activism and social change. He was recently awarded the 2014-2015 Miami Choreographer’s Fellowship, and is on faculty of the FIU Honors College. His project Grass Stains was also recently awarded a Knight Arts Challenge Grant.

The Center for Writing and Literature @ Miami Dade College (The Center @ MDC) is kicking off The Big Read.

In When the Emperor Was Divine, Otsuka addresses themes of race, identity, loyalty and patriotism. In her sparse, beautiful prose she quietly reveals the ugly underbelly of being “other” in a country which both embraces and rejects its immigrant self.

I am writing to introduce you to The Great Office Escape (TheGOE) “a grownup field day” for South Floridians to play, explore and discover ways to live healthier, feel better; and win prizes while they do it. The Great Office Escape is a wellness day that encourages teams, individuals and kids alike ranging from co-workers, colleagues, friends and family members to put down their phones and enjoy a pressure-free day – all with one shared goal – to discover the fun of feeling good. TheGOE aims to provide participants with a way to unplug from the workplace and provides tools to foster healthy habits – both at work and home. Unlike traditional corporate events, The Great Office Escape focuses on positivity as opposed to competition. The objective is to take small, achievable steps, and celebrate ones’ accomplishments; whether big or small.

Taking place on March 7th at Haulover Beach, in Bay Harbor, The Great Office Escape is open to office teams, neighborhood teams and club teams as well as individuals and kids, the combinations are endless! To become a “citizen” (as a team ) of The Great Office Escape, (www.goe.com), all that is required is an enthusiastic group of 10 people over the age of 18 with at least two females prepared for fun with a healthy dose of side effects! There is even a KID’S ZONE; after all, living healthier is a family affair.

Anything but ordinary, contests at TheGOE include CEO Dunk Tank, Tricycle Races, Nerf Dodgeball, Hula Hoop, Wacky Obstacle Course, Social Media Challenges and Sandcastle Building. Teams receive official “Passports to Feelgoodsville” and can earn stamps by participating in games, contests and our Interactive Expo Booths. Teams that turn in a completed passport qualify to win prizes including restaurant gift certificates, massages and more.

The Great Office Escape concept was born to promote Health and Wellness in the workplace and to welcome, encourage and motivate those who are often times intimated by traditional fitness. Although it’s hard to admit, wellness competitions, like 5k’s and fitness challenges are intimidating to most people. Even so, The Great Office Escape offers alternative ways to wellness to those already involved in a healthy lifestyle. Knowing that cost of healthcare and insurance is on the rise and employees and employers are all feeling the impact; one of the most effective ways to help keep a lid on those costs is through wellness initiatives. Healthy employees get sick less often, lessening the cost burden on themselves and on their employers. Healthy individuals are proven to be more productive, have decreased absenteeism and improved morale.

The Great Office Escape 2015 is taking place on March 7th at Haulover Beach Miami, FL and early registration costs are just $50 per person. The rate goes to $57 per person on January 31, 2015. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Past sponsors include Humana, Bacardi, KIND Healthy Snacks, Viva Coco and Tropical Credit Union.

Arts Mean Business Forum Highlights from Miami Arts Week and next steps in new economy discussions

beaconimage-300x151

ON DECEMBER 18th,  LAURA BRUNEY wrote the article found below, which was originally published December 12, 2014 on their blog, www.artsbizmiami.org/ArtsBizBlog. It was edited and republished for the ARTSBlog with permission from the author.

We are excited to hear, where the city is headed in these discussions of new economies and to see who is going to be asked to be a part of these discussions from our community.

The 2014 edition of Art Basel week this December in Miami featured the perfect marriage of arts and business. Beyond the dozens of satellite fairs and thousands of gallery booths catering to collectors, Miami Art Weekoffered a far more compelling benefit for businesses eager to court potential clients. Pacesetters from all industries and brand power houses swooned at the reach of art week. Developers, financial investment companies, tech start-ups, luxury car brands, and more cleverly leveraged the arts as a strategic imperative for business. These companies know the arts mean business.

During Art Week, the Arts & Business Council of Miami hosted an Access Breakfast Forum with theBeacon Council to discuss how the arts are transforming Miami and why the creative industry matters to business. Donna Abood, Chair of the Beacon Council, and I opened the program with some astonishing facts. The arts industry in Miami-Dade has a 1.1 billion dollar impact and employs 30,000 full time workers. More than 13 million people participated in the arts this year, and thousands of business professionals shared their skills as volunteers and board members. Cultural tourism, a major component of brand Miami, brings 5 million visitors each year. Robert Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts, kicked off the program talking about how the arts bring a competitive advantage to companies that are involved.
The flash of transformation in any city is culture and art. Collaborations between arts and business enhance quality of life, especially in cities like Miami.

Lynch praised our vibrant cultural community. “I was immersed in art from the moment I stepped off the plane and walked through Miami International Airport, which was filled art installations and marvelous art. Every time I come there is something new and I am always energized. Miami is a 24 hour city. As I was returning to my hotel at midnight last evening a lot people were just leaving to start their night.”

“Business support for the arts isn’t a charity; it’s an investment that creates shared value through mutually beneficial partnerships,” said Lynch. He outlined the value the arts bring to business including brand empowerment, leveraging connections with clients and consumers, professional development that encourages innovation and creativity, and enhancing the workspace. Involvement with the arts is good for executives, clients, shareholders, and employees.

Beacon Council President & CEO, Larry Williams, closed out the morning by sharing the impressive economic impact figures for Miami-Dade’s creative industries. Lynch perfectly summed up the breakfast forum by saying that extending partnerships to span all industries and fostering collaboration is building the new economy of ideas in Miami.

This piece by Laura Bruney of the Arts & Business Council of Miami was originally published December 12, 2014 on their blog, www.artsbizmiami.org/ArtsBizBlog. It has been edited and republished for ARTSBlog with permission from the author.

Sanchez (Paradise Motel, Property Line) will present a free reading of his latest work Dead By Night in the Miami-Dade County Auditorium’s On Stage Black Box Theater on Monday, January 12 at 8 p.m. A female crime novelist is lured into a warehouse under false pretenses. There, she finds two young, adoring fans ready to battle for her love and attention. Dead By Night is inspired by the intriguingly complex life and work of crime novelist Patricia Highsmith, who wrote Strangers on a Train, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and others. Actresses Barbara Sloan, Michelle L. Antelo and Andrea Bovino will bring this new script to life, under the direction of Michael Yawney. Sanchez’s plays have been produced in Miami, Minneapolis, Los Angeles and New York.

Enjoy a special performance by Miami’s beloved Spam Allstars, open studios, food trucks, the closing of In Response – featuring the work of our artists and Kathryn Andrews (on loan from the De La Cruz Collection) –and the debut of “Swenson Shots” in the Swenson Gallery, also curated by our very own Justin H. Long!

Swenson Shots are designed to give emerging artists their first experience producing a gallery show from start to finish and provide a space for a more experienced artist to experiment and showcase a new line of work. The shows will have a fast turnaround, with artists having the space from Monday to Sunday with an opening on Wednesday. This is just enough time to set up, have an opening, lead a talk, document the show, and conduct private visits with curators, gallerists, and potential buyers. This complete, soup-to-nuts opportunity is key to launching promising careers beyond the studio and into the professional art world.

Local favorite Madeliene Abling unveils new oil paintings at the Williams McCall Gallery South of Fifth. Kicking off with an artist reception that is open to the public on Saturday, January 17th at 6 pm, the exhibit runs until February 4. The exhibit features Abling’s boats, classic cars, and adult beverages. Abling is known for her thick, luscious, colorful oil paintings. Her work is figurative but with a different twist. Abling uses her palette knife to create exciting imagery of different themes. Abling rarely includes people in any of her work because she feels the viewer can be more easily invited into her work without the interference of people within the painting. In all of her paintings the viewer can see movement. The wind in the sails of the boats, cars chugging down a road or an adult beverage just ready for a sip! Abling paints with abandon–not afraid to take chances and from this come her striking visual paintings!

Art Deco Weekend 2015 celebrates 100 years of history, architecture and people! Join us January 16th – 18th as we take a step back in time and remember the last 100 years of Miami Beach.

Every year during Art Deco Weekend, Miami Design Preservation League closes Ocean Drive to traffic. Over 140 vendors line Lummus Park and Ocean Drive displaying vintage and handmade paintings, photography, jewelry, sculptures, posters and more. Ocean Drive fills with street entertainment, classic cars and people. However, the main attraction is the Art Deco buildings sitting on the most famous street in South Florida!

A lively and entertaining menu of family friendly entertainment takes over Ocean Drive during Art Deco Weekend. Come see stilt walkers, magicians, dancers, strolling characters and more! The Art Deco Weekend lectures are held in the Art Deco Museum at 1001 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach, Fl 33139.

The Promenade is our cultural hub at Art Deco Weekend. Attendees will be able to dance to music from the 1920s, 30s & 40s as jazz musicians & big bands take the stage. Attendees will be able to see furniture and home accessories made in Art Deco decades. Models will take the stage and showcase clothing and accessories made or inspired by the Art Deco era. Finally, the ADW Film Series will feature films made in Miami Beach as we celebrate the “100 Years of Miami Beach!”

Art Deco Weekend invites you to be a part of the first annual Deco Dance-A-Thon, Saturday, January 17, 3–6 p.m., sponsored by Art Deco Napier. Cost to enter is $30 for Individuals and $50 per Couple. Prizes go to the best dancer, best costume and more!

Art Deco Weekend is happy to present the 5th Annual Art Deco Weekend Fashion Show. The Miami Design Preservation League has partnered with Tatyana Clothing, Iris Chase Designs, Beauty Touches Group, and Beauty Schools of America to bring you an exciting hour of Art Deco Fashion and Music.

Art Deco Weekend is an official venue for Swingsomnia and Vintage Swing Celebration attendees! Swing dance and music enthusiasts from across the country will come together to spotlight the Swing Era and accentuate community instead of the difference that set people apart. Sarah Jane and the Blue Notes and the Shiny Shoes Band will take the stage as nearly 200 dancers hit the floor for a fun night of music and dance! Friday, January 16, 2015 8pm – 11pm at the Promenade, 12th and Ocean (on the sand).

The Playground is a special area of Art Deco Weekend for kids and families. The Playground is open to the public on Saturday (1/17) and Sunday (1/18) from NOON – 5PM. The Playground is located in Lummus Park by 13th street and features live performances just for kids along with kids activities and vendors. On Sunday, we will kick off the day at the Playground with an event for dogs, so bring the whole family to Art Deco Weekend and visit the Playground! On Sunday, at the Playground, all the participating dogs will receive a doggie bag at our Arf Deco doggie meet-up. Awards will be given out at the Playground Stage for MOST DECO DOG and to the DOG & OWNER who look the most alike along with a handful of other fun awards.

Bizarre Botany is an exhibition of black and white drawings by Miami-based Tropical Botanic Artists group. The original illustrations are drawn from 140 created for THE BIG, BAD BOOK OF BOTANY: The World’s Most Fascinating Flora by Michael Largo (William Morrow). The artists will be present for the January 9, 2015, kickoff event of South Miami’s monthly GalleryWalk.

Largo’s research for the highly personal collection of anecdotes about the effects of common and uncommon plants on humans led him to Tropical Botanic Artists who drew or painted plants to illustrate his words. Book combines latest biological data with bizarre facts about some of the plant kingdom’s most intriguing species.

Artists whose works are on view are Margie Bauer, Kristi Bettendorf, Beverly Borland, Silvia Bota, Marge Brown, Marie Chaney, Susan Cumins, Jeanie Duck, Julio Figueroa, Bobbi Garber, Pauline Goldsmith, Leo Hernandez, Carol Ann Lane, Elsa Nadal, Carol Onstad, and Donna Torres. The Revivalists

The septet has been playing nonstop since 2007, crafting a genre-hopping sound that rounds out traditional rock instrumentation with horns and pedal steel guitar and mixes the divergent backgrounds of its individual members with the humid, funky undercurrents of the band’s New Orleans home. The result is like English spoken with an exotic accent: familiar, yet difficult to pin down.

The California Honeydrops

The California Honeydrops don’t just play music—they throw parties. Drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B, funk, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second-line, the Honeydrops bring vibrant energy and infectious dance-party vibes to their live shows. They’ve taken the party all over the world: on their nine European tours, to featured slots at such premiere festivals as Monterey Jazz, High Sierra, and Outside Lands, and performances in 2013 supporting B.B. King, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, and Allen Toussaint. Whether in those high-profile performances or in more intimate venues where the band itself can leave the stage and get down on the dance floor, the California Honeydrops’ shared vision and purpose remain: to make the audience dance and sing.

JUke

Hailing from Miami, JUke is a new breed of Post-blues and the brainchild of singer/songwriter/harmonica whiz, Eric Garcia, who was dissatisfied with most dated, non-threatening traditional blues. Eric felt the need to bring the angst and power back into the type of music that seemed to lose some of it’s relevance and impact.

Teaming up with guitar phenom and singer, Evan Lamb, was the catapult that made JUke go and realize Eric’s vision.

The addition of powerhouse drummer, Brian Lange, and the endless grooves from bassist, Taylor Byrd, have completed the unique hybrid that has become JUke.

Nipsey Hussle

You already know what it is. From the way he greets you, to the words that he speaks. The uniform he wears is bold, aggressive and absolutely intimidating. He’s authentic – the offspring of the West Coast’s most celebrated talent – yet and still a novelty all his own. In an industry that’s fallen victim to bubble gum lyrics and erroneous dance fads to match, he’s the spokesperson the block wants for. He’s the sociopolitical outrage of Ice Cube and N.W.A. He’s Snoop Dogg before you knew his name and Ice T after an unexpected knock at 6 o’clock in the morning. He’s the very definition of Slauson & Crenshaw – a self-inspired movement and a name you can trust. He is Nipsey Hussle.

64th Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art 1/17/15-1/18/15

64th Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art

Grounds of the Lowe Art Museum
1301 Stanford Drive
University of Miami Campus
Coral Gables, FL
Admission and Parking: Free
www.BeauxArtsMiami.org
The 64th annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art presented by City National Bank will bring more than 220 fine art juried exhibitors to the grounds of the Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami campus.

Widely recognized as one of the region’s most popular outdoor art exhibitions and a South Florida tradition, the Beaux Arts Festival of Art attracts thousands of visitors annually and offers works in 10 mediums for a variety of budgets. This year’s festival will feature live music in the main-stage tent, children’s entertainment – including free art activities for children ages 4-12 in the UHealth Family Fun Zone – and a variety of dining options, making this event ideal for art enthusiasts and families alike.

Proceeds from the festival benefit the Lowe Art Museum, a Beaux Arts partner for 63 years. Particularly newsworthy this year: a $1.5 million gift from Beaux Arts, the museum’s founding support group, has now enabled the creation of the endowed position of Beaux Arts Director and Chief Curator of the Lowe Art Museum, Jill Deupi. The gift to make the directorship endowment will remain in perpetuity and support increased programming, community outreach, facility upgrades and other projects at the Lowe.

Funds raised from the festival will also help underwrite “Hands On!” – Beaux Arts’ signature program for children from underserved schools. ”Hands On!” introduces these Miami-Dade students to the world of art and museums via field trips to the Lowe Art Museum.

In addition to the featured artists selected by a panel of jurors, festival visitors will also enjoy the popular Student Artist Showcase presented by BNY Mellon, featuring up to 150 pieces from talented Miami-Dade middle and high school students, on display inside the Lowe Art Museum throughout the weekend. A celebration honoring the students’ art will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at the Lowe. Additional sponsors of the Student Artist Showcase include Neiman Marcus and Joanna’s Marketplace.

The festival was originally called the “Clothesline Sale,” as Beaux Arts volunteers used clotheslines to display the works of local artists in front of the Lowe. Over 60 years later, the 100% volunteer-run, annual festival has evolved and is considered one of the top outdoor fine art shows in the country.

In addition to Presenting Sponsor City National Bank, Featured Sponsors for the 2015 Beaux Arts Festival of Art include Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables and Cutler Bay, and UHealth, with additional support from Pollo Tropical and the University of Miami.

Grants include the City of Coral Gables, the Batchelor Foundation, the Cobb Family Foundation, Citizens Interested in Arts, and Publix Supermarkets Charities.

Founded in 1952, Beaux Arts is a 100% volunteer organization made up of 100 women and over 300 associates, who fund art enrichment, appreciation and financial assistance to the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami. Through major fundraising initiatives such as the annual Beaux Arts Ball and Beaux Arts Festival of Art on the University of Miami Campus, the organization is the largest group financial donor to the museum. In 2014, a $1.5 million gift from Beaux Arts enabled the creation of the endowed position of Beaux Arts Director and Chief Curator of the Lowe Art Museum – a gift that will remain in perpetuity and support increased programming, community outreach, facility upgrades and other projects at the Lowe. Beaux Arts also won the “White Award,” with which the organization was recognized as the University of Miami’s most effective donor, surpassing the $5 million mark of funds contributed to the Lowe Museum. To date, Beaux Arts has hosted over 25,000 children at the Beaux Arts Art Camp and hosted over 5,000 students from Miami-Dade schools for our art appreciation outreach program, “Hands On!.” For more information, visit www.BeauxArtsMiami.org.

Once again, Life Is Art is happy to join with Yo Miami for their Average Joe Art Sale New Years’ ResYolution Edition. Yo Miami has dedicated 10% of sales to be donated to Life Is Art! Plus, for this special edition, we have the Mega Art Auction. And, we will be celebrating Annette’s BIG Birthday! It’s a new year and Yo Miami is ready to put our money where our mouth is again.

The whole idea behind these Average Joe sales was to make it possible for everyday people to be able to support their local artists by presenting art work in a laid back environment at affordable prices.

In the interest of showing you how dedicated we are to supporting the local art scene, this month we’re donating a portion of all sales to an organization that has been doing just that for way longer than we have, Life Is Art, Inc.

As an added twist, this year we’ll be ending an online auction at the end of the night for the 3 massive 10x10ft canvases which were painted as a live collaboration between 6 local artists at Spectrum. Each of the 3 pieces will be up for online auction starting the week before the sale, and visitors will have the opportunity to bid live throughout the day before it closes at the end of the night. The teamups are Tee Davis (aka TeePop) + Jay Bellicchi (aka REMOTE), Ruben Ubiera + Eleazar Delgado, Monique Lassooij + Daniel Fila (aka Krave Art).

We have a fresh batch of visiting artists, along with our Resident Artists selling everything from original works, to limited edition prints, and merchandise to suit any budget, from $5 all the way up to $500
(Disclaimer: Resident Artists may have more expensive work in their studios)

Cog Nomen our band in residence will be back with us, gracing us with their psychedelic tunes around 5-6pm.
