Just blocks away from Art Basel, the atmosphere at SELECT was electric. This year we once again provided our alternative platform to over 60 contemporary galleries and artists projects.

Our Pre–Basel Bash set the tone for what to expect during the second edition of SELECT Fair. A record number of attendees swarmed to our rooftop party where we provided complimentary drinks by Deep Eddy Vodka, Red Bull, Vita Coco, and Dusko Whiskey. Tom Laroc pumped out a stellar DJ set while numerous gallerists and trend setters mingled in celebration of both SELECT and the mural by acclaimed street artist Greg Mike.

SELECT opened on December 4th to a packed house of VIP’s, most notably:
Leonardo DiCaprio, Fab Five Freddy and Danny Simmons. Our “COLLECT SELECT” program which featured a limited edition print by Young and Sick provided a fantastic additional incentive for our collectors to purchase works at SELECT. We are very proud to have gone through the entire stock! All week, our events were highly attended by major collectors, curators and art lovers, early estimates set us at 8,000 visitors!

Our 2013 program was once again curated by founders, MFA graduates, and practicing artists: Matthew Eck and Brian Whiteley. The quality of the work at SELECT 2013 spoke for itself and the cozy vibe of the boutique hotel made for an intimate and approachable alternative to the larger fairs. Both Whiteley and Eck have a strong understanding of alternative mediums such as video, installation and performance.
The main lobby space at SELECT was repurposed by Superchief Gallery, a Lower East Side Gallery with a street art edge. Superchief adorned the walls of the Catalina with works by SWOON, as well as a curated group exhibition featuring notable artists like: Dennis McNett, Coby Kennedy, Lil’ Kool, Todd Seelie, Greg Mike, Andrew Poneros (Pork), Metro Zu and Mike Diana.

Our second floor lobby was transformed by the Santa Fe based art collective Meow Wolf. Meow Wolf is known for immersive installations that completely alter the environment. If you were in the mood to relax, you could have visited the Bamboo garden where artist Melissa Maddonni Haims “Yarn-Bombed” the cabanas. Behind the fair inside the swimming pool, Urban Studio / FIT transformed the space into an interactive sound, light and video installation.

Design Miami Vernissage on Wednesday, December 4, 2013.  Design Miami is always wonderful with lots of beautiful and interesting furniture, lighting and art.

The 2013 edition of Design Miami/, the global forum for design, has come to a close, showing impressive sales figures for exhibiting galleries in sectors across the spectrum, from classic exemplars of twentieth century icons to contemporary digital pieces. 32,000 visitors attended the fair over the course of the week, with 7,000 specially invited guests taking advantage of the exclusive opening preview day—including design enthusiasts Peter Brant, Maja Hoffmann, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Pharrell Williams and Micky Wolfson; leading international architects Sir Norman Foster and Jean Nouvel; and directors from the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Vitra Design Museum, Walker Art Center, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), and Denver Museum of Art.

A competitive selection of the leading design galleries from around the world—including first time exhibitors from Russia and Lebanon—were supported by original commissions created exclusively for Design Miami/. An animated turn by Martha Stewart, in conversation with Stefano Tonchi, Editor-in-Chief of W Magazine, was the most high-profile in a popular series of Design Talks presented by The Surf Club and Residences, which featured Richard Meier and Muriel Brandolini among others as part of the fair’s extended program.

“This was our most important show to date in terms of quantity and maturity of the gallery presentations. The installations ranged from museum-quality mises en scène to carefully designed living environments and were rewarded by strong sales across all categories, “says Marianne Goebl, director of Design Miami/.

While eminent commentators admired the fair’s offer (and sales) of blue-chip Modernist and mid-century design from galleries including New York’s R 20th Century and Galerie Jacques- Lacoste of Paris, there was also an excitingly strong uptake of innovative contemporary work. Victor Hunt Designart Dealer of Brussels saw success with works by Swedish collective Humans Since 1982, including their mesmerizing analogue-meets-digital The Clock Clock, 2008-2010. With museum-standard works, including a complete Jean Prouvé prefabricated house on show at Galerie Patrick Seguin, the fair reinforced its reputation as a site to learn about design as well as to collect it.

The longstanding importance of women in the design world was underlined by substantial interest in the exceptional pieces by Charlotte Perriand assembled by Galerie DOWNTOWN— François Laffanour of Paris, all of which derived from the same residence. Demisch Danant of New York also had an elegantly styled booth dedicated to the output of exceptional female designers Maria Pergay and Sheila Hicks, works by both of whom piqued the interest of collectors.

This year’s edition of Design Miami/ dedicated an expanded proportion of the exhibition space to studio and artist-designed jewelry, with six gallerists represented at the fair, including first time exhibitor Louisa Guinness Gallery of London. This was a noticeably popular sector, with significant sales for both contemporary and twentieth century works by artists Alexander Calder, Man Ray and Les Lalanne.

“More and more people are interested in collecting design worldwide. This is clear from the international attendance at the fair and the amount of articles in the press. It’s easier to understand a piece of furniture than an art piece because you live with it. You interact with it everyday. And Design Miami/ is the place where people can become educated about many types of important design,” says Didier Krzentowski of Galerie kreo, Paris

Other emerging trends at the fair included a renewed emphasis on glamorous Parisian midcentury apartment living, as noted by Design Log’s invited blogger, Pilar Viladas, former design editor at T, The New York Times Style Magazine. The New York Times’ blog also noticed a craze for upholstered sheepskin chairs, which together with a wave of pieces showcasing their notably organic forms, including ceramics by the Haas Brothers (R 20th Century, New York) and Nucleo’s resin pieces (ammann //gallery, Cologne), amounted to an unexpected resurgence of natural and body-centric design works. The trend was also reflected in installations that nodded to the natural world of Miami and beyond, starting at the fair’s entrance with Formlessfinder’s beach-inspired pavilion TENT PILE.

“Design Miami/ 2013 was very strong, with an impressive amount of brand new work not seen before—such as R 20th Century and Victor Hunt’s selections—married with the breathtaking Prouvé masterpieces at Patrick Seguin. It is great to have Rossana Orlandi join the mix this year, as well as other newbies like Elisabetta Cipriani with Carlos Cruz Diez’s fantastic jewelry. Some prices are comparable to across the street at the art fair, but it was nice to have something for every price point, like Satyendra Pakhale’s vases at ammann //gallery (and the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt shop of course), ” says Caroline Baumann, director of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.

The fair once again welcomed an exclusive group of sponsor partners who presented unique design collaborations including Fragmentation by Audi, Guilherme Torres’s gold-toned, crystalline Mangue Groove for Swarovski Crystal Palace, Simon Heijdens’ Phare n°. 1–9 for Perrier-Jouët, and Maria Pergay for Fendi.

“Fendi has been an active partner of Design Miami/ since 2008, and as such has closely accompanied the development of the fair. This year’s show was certainly the strongest edition to date – mature in content with a great level of energy,” says Silvia Venturini Fendi, head of Accessories at Fendi.

The enthusiastic response from prominent visitors to the fair, journalists and the museum community have reinforced Design Miami’s leading position among fairs of collectible modern and contemporary design. Bourne onwards and upwards by the continually expanding audience for exceptional works and inventive installations, in 2014, the global forum for design will return for its ninth edition in Basel, Switzerland, from June 17-22.

We attended Scope Miami Beach 2013 on Tuesday, December 3 for the Vernissage and headed back on Sunday, December 8 to see the show better.  Scope Miami Beach is one of my top favorite fairs.

SCOPE Art Show presented its 13th edition on the sands of Miami Beach, to much acclaim from visitors and exhibitors, alike. Celebrating its new location with pioneering new programming, including an exclusive Platinum VIP Gala benefiting the Mourning Family Foundation, SCOPE Miami Beach welcomed over 38,000 visitors, eager to explore the 100 International Exhibitors and 16 Breeder Program Galleries.

Beginning with the invitation-only Gala that welcomed 1,500 high-profile guests, sales were robust from the start, with Le Laboratoire reporting 2 works sold by Mario Nunez to The Cisneros Family within 5 minutes of opening, and an additional 3 works by Nunez sold in the following hours.

Also reporting early sales, T+KARPIO Projects placed 10 works from Rene Francisco and 2 from Glexis Novoa into private collections of Ella Cisneros and Eduardo Hoschild, with 3 additional commissions from Novoa to private collections in Peru.

Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art sold out their Austrian artists, all to new, private collections, speaking of SCOPE’s new location, “It’s really the best for the clients, also very positive for all the Art Basel collectors: the location is easy, relaxed, and in this relaxed mood, it is easier for them to make decisions to purchase works.”

Tel Aviv-based Corridor Contemporary hails the SCOPE Miami Beach show as “One of the best we have ever done,” having placed an impressive 28 works into private and public collections, including the Moscow MoMA and The Eileen S. Kaminsky Family Foundation.

Jacob Karpio Galeria reported a sold out booth, placing works by multiple artists, most notably 2 video pieces by collaborative Silvia Pestana / Sonia Cunliffe with the Kentucky Museum.

Shirin Art Gallery was ecstatic about expanding their collector base: “This year was of such a high level- we sold Iranian Artists to collectors from America and Puerto Rico- new markets for us”. Also reporting sales to new clients, BLANK SPACE placed $80,000 of works into “very notable private collections”.

A perennial favorite amongst SCOPE visitors, Thinkspace says, “It’s been awesome to be down here on the beach with the big boys and turn a lot of heads”, having placed 8 paintings by Audrey Kawasaki, 5 pieces by Dabs Myla and an incredible 37 paintings by miscellaneous artists, with total sales exceeding $150,000. Also reporting tremendous sales, Emmanuel Fremin placed works by Drew Tal with the 21C Museum and additional works by Antoine Rose into private collections with total sales coming in above $200,000.

Ethan Cohen Fine Arts sold works by Trong Nguyen, Michael Zelehoski, Ivory Coast artist Aboudia, and DORMICE to private collections in the USA and Europe. Also reporting multiple sales to private collections, Breeder Galleries: L’Inlassable, Natalie Kates Projects, Yellow Peril, Fuchs Projects and Black Book Gallery, who sold out Ben Eine’s paintings and placed 8 paper works by Hari & Deepti, along with 3 commissions to undisclosed “high-powered collectors”.

The Flat: Masimo Carasi, placed 9 pieces, the intrepid Red Bull Curates project sold 7 paintings, while Shin Gallery sold 4 large works, one to an undisclosed Foundation in Los Angeles. The subject of a glowing Artinfo review, Galleri Ramsfjord sold 14 paintings to private collectors, while Hans Alf reported multiple sales of Rene Holm and Fredrik Raddum to notable Japanese and Israeli collections, along with 2 commissions.

Robert Fontaine sold out works by Nick Gentry to begin a waiting list, and placed a work by James McNabb with The American Folk Art Museum. Also reporting Museum sales: Rare Gallery placed a Maya Brodsky painting with The Maine Museum of Art, and Kyoto-based G77 sold a work to the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art.

SCOPE Exhibitors reported interest from several more museums, including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh, McKinney Contemporary in Dallas, The Neuberger Museum, MoCA Los Angeles and The Bass Museum.

Several Celebrities were also on-hand to explore SCOPE’s new beach location. ArtNow NY placed a Joseph Grazi piece to the owner of Cirque du Soleil, while also welcoming Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and their client, David Arquette, who acquired multiple works from SCOPE Featured Project, Message in a Bottle, curated by Lori Zimmer and presented by Quatelbaum Foretich Gallery. Bruce Willis was spotted with exhibitor Hans Alf, Tyson Beckford posed for cameras in the VH1 + SCOPE Lounge, and longtime SCOPE supporter, Adrian Grenier, explored every aisle in the show.

SCOPE Miami Beach Sponsors and Partners were thoughtfully engaged in all the dynamism, with FIAT providing a fleet of new 500L vehicles for SCOPE’s daily VIP shuttle, BucketFeet engaging visitors with the #MadeToStandOut competition, Perrier welcoming VIPs with chilled bottles at Ocean Drive, LavAzza brewing complimentary espresso in the SCOPE Pavilion and Red Bull, Bombay Sapphire, Rums of Puerto Rico and LIQs serving complimentary happy hour daily.

Teaming up to host ART + MUSIC + BEACH, the VH1 + SCOPE partnership fascinated millions across digital, social and television platforms. This year, VH1 and SCOPE selected visual artist Hebru Brantley, and music artist, Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean, to be featured in an on-air profile in which the two explore the symbiotic relationship between art, music and pop culture. The video profile aired for a month on VH1, reaching 99 million homes across America. SCOPE VIPs, celebrities and Miami glitterati danced under the stars at the Official VH1+ SCOPE Party on the beach, with a special performance by Tegan and Sara. Ilegal Mezcal poured complimentary tiki-inspired drinks while guests posed in the FIAT photo booth, and lounged beside a massive Hebru Brantley painting inspired by Monster DNA’s new headphone designs.

The Press hailed SCOPE’s return to Miami Beach as an astounding success, featuring the show in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Artinfo, Huffington Post, Papermag, Miami Magazine, Complex, Juxtapoz, Miami New Times, BBC, MSNBC, CNN, CBS, Univision, amongst other prestigious publications and television outlets.

The excitement over SCOPE and its new location permeated into record-breaking social media statistics, with @SCOPEArtShow achieving over 31 million impressions and #SCOPEMiamiBeach reaching 24 million impressions, while partnership activations garnered millions more like ART + MUSIC + BEACH reaching a further 11 million users.

Following this extraordinary achievement on Miami Beach, SCOPE is delighted to announce its return to landmark venue, Skylight at Moynihan Station, for SCOPE New York in March 2014. Widely regarded for its influential voice in the emerging art market, SCOPE’s flagship fair will feature 60 international galleries alongside 20 Breeder Program galleries, selected by curatorial panel. SCOPE New York opens to Press and VIP’s on Wednesday, March 5 with the Platinum Preview and First View benefits, and will run March 6 – 9, 2014.

Spectrum Miami Art Fair during Art Basel Miami Art Week.

We want to thank Spectrum Miami for giving back to the Miami community by raising funds for Life Is Art.

Redwood Media Group, parent company of Artexpo, SPECTRUM Art Fairs, DECOR Expo and Art Business News, today announced significant sales and high attendance at SPECTRUM Miami and ArtSpot International Art Fair. The show took place Wednesday, December 4 – Sunday, December 8, in the heart of the Wynwood Art District, and welcomed a crowd of more than 4,200 guests on its opening night and more than 26,000 collectors, buyers, art supporters and guests for the duration of the show. SPECTRUM Miami and ArtSpot International’s guests enjoyed artist unveilings, a live photo shoot with Miami City Ballet Dancers and NY Times bestselling author Jordan Matter, as well as a wide array of innovative, contemporary art works, including photography, works on paper, sculpture, and installations from emerging and established artists.

The art fair, which showcased pieces from mid-career artists and established national and international galleries, caters to high-end collectors, buyers and art enthusiasts. Housed within the SPECTRUM tent was the independent show, ArtSpot International, organized by Aldo Castillo. ArtSpot 2013 presented carefully selected, modern and cutting-edge galleries exhibiting contemporary art. The show merged a range of international art with Chinese and Latin American influences and represented an underserved international art community, while offering gallery owners, designers, architects and collectors extraordinary creations by innovative, established artists.

There was a dynamic mix of compelling contemporary art at this year’s show – from sculpture to photography, mixed media, abstract art and more. As a result, artist and exhibitor sales were plentiful and collectors walked away with some exceptional new pieces.

Here are some highlights from SPECTRUM and ArtSpot International:
The Selby Fleetwood Gallery brought works that were displayed both inside and outdoors. They sold five pieces, including Susan Stamm Evans’ “Threads” for $40,000 and a piece by Kevin Box for $20,000.
Gordon Huether had a remarkable show as well. His “Stix & Stones” went for $28,000, his “Sweet Orange Lens” at $9,500,” items from his “Silver Lens” series at $8,500 each and in the last three minutes of the show collectors claimed $18,500 worth of exceptional works.
The Americas Collection gallery has sales in process for $76,000 from highlighted artists Pablo Martinez and Wladimiro Politano.
Ford Fine Art sold a Diego Rivera to a collector from Mexico and has sales in process for $140,000 overall.
Aldo Castillo Gallery sold seven works by Emil Alzamora, three works by Fredy Villamil, four works by Adriana Carvalho and eight installations by Ancizar Marin among others.
Cuban artist Humberto Benitez sold a total of seven works; his highest-selling piece was “Los Invitados,” which went for $23,000.
Ben Joyce moved three pieces and lined up ten commissions for his signature “Abstract Topophilia” works (inspired by Google Earth images). His highest-seller was “San Francisco,” which sold for $11,000.
Sculptor Thomas Wargin came close to selling out his booth. His top-selling piece was “A Ride with the Angel of Death,” which sold for $7,000.
33 Contemporary Gallery—featuring the Zhou Brothers along other artists from China, Europe, the United States and Mexico—has sales in process for $36,000 from Harry Sudman, Dana Major and Christine Forni.
There were many other sales as well. Nicole Furman sold three pieces (“Kissin’ Minnie” was the highest seller at $5,000), Art Company Misoolsidae sold five (their highest seller was $5,700), and Current Art Group sold a $9,000 piece by artist Magaly Barrola Otola and has sales in progress for up to $60,000, among others.

In addition to the vast array of contemporary works at the show, SPECTRUM and ArtSpot saw some classics from Chagall, Picasso, Latin American masters born before 1940 and other masters shown by Old Towne Gallery.

SPECTRUM After Dark, a VIP opening preview party, included artist unveilings and musical entertainment from Miami’s DJ What, along with passed hors d’oeuvres, complimentary products from VitaCoco and KIND snacks, as well as complimentary cocktails and wine from Tanduay Asian rum, Belaya Rus vodka and Repeat Wines. The evening also featured a live photo shoot with Miami City Ballet dancers and Jordan Matter, photographer and New York Times bestselling author of “Dancers Among Us.”

This year, show organizers partnered with Life Is Art, a local not-for-profit organization that works to promote and support the arts and the community in South Florida through events and education. As such, SPECTRUM donated a ticket portion of its sales to benefit Life Is Art and its initiatives from the opening night party, and requested donations from guests throughout the show. Redwood Media Group is pleased to announce that the art fair raised more than $5,000 for Life Is Art.

Following the show, Redwood Media Group announced that SPECTRUM will be returning to Miami next year during Art Week Miami from December 4-7, 2014 (preview party slated for Dec. 3). The show will be located at a new location in the Wynwood Art District: adjacent to Art Miami and Context.
