To speak or not to speak on Carlos GarcÃa de la Nuez
Presentation: March 25, 20:00 hours
Location: Books and Books 265 Aragón Ave.
Coral Gables, FL. 33134
The art book CARLOS GARCIA will be presented on March 25, at 8:00 pm, at Books and Books, 265 Aragón Ave. Coral Gables, FL. 33134, tel. 305 442 44 08, fax. 305 44 97 51. orders@boooksandbooks.com This launching will be held within the framework of Arteamericas 09, one of the most important art fairs taking place in the United States, where Carlos GarcÃa will show his art works. The book’s edition which took one year to complete, is the product of the author’s comprehensive work, with more than 160 photographs of his paintings and critical essays by renowned writers, in 295 pages. The editor of this publication is GalerÃa Talento Arte Visual, located in Mexico City.
It would seem that the spirit of the man who dreams is completely satisfied. That refractibilitat, that pulling and encrypted energy composing the crash between objects, signs and moods in an encounter of fortuity, embraces the aesthetic experience of Carlos GarcÃa, whose work, besides poetic is an act of giving in, always aimed towards the edge of painting.
From its depth, this book speaks of the heritage of abstractionism placed within figurative traces, re-symbolized landscapes and territories conquered by pigment stains, calligraphies, punctuation and writings, like chromatic metaphors of a new nature.
Carlos GarcÃa lifts off with his work within the so called 80´s Generation, marked by the rupture with the traditional school of Cuban painting. His group, Cuatro por Cuatro, is considered one of the most important in the context of visual arts in Havana during that decade. He has participated with his work in the 19th edition of the São Paulo Biennial in Brazil. He has worked with the Donberger Gallery in Germany; Galerie Nesle and Galerie Artuel in France; GalerÃa Talento Visual, from Mexico. He has exhibited his paintings in Russia, France, Italy, Germany, Yugoslavia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Colombia, Panama, Argentina; all this, to highlight only a few of the most important moments in the universe of this renowned painter.
His work is part of the Permanent Collection of Museo de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba.

Autocycles by Matt Carone
ArtSpace Virginia Miller Galleries
cordially invites you to our opening reception
Reception:
Friday, March 6th
7 – 10 pm
Location:
ArtSpace Virginia Miller Galleries
169 Madeira Avenue
Coral Gables, FL 33134

“Autocycles,†The latest twists in the lifelong evolution of paintings by Matt Carone will open at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries at 7 p.m. Friday, Mar. 6th.
Largely inspired by his 45-year friendship with the famed Chilean painter Roberto Matta, Carone’s paintings recently took a turn toward a more patterned abstraction.
According to the artist, the new subtly toned works “seem to be an opening of a new door of automatism.
“The approach is similar to the past works but the image is arrived at more spontaneously and graphically,†Carone says. “Subconscious symbols and rhythmic gestures relating to each other or canceling each other out seem to be the building blocks to the final statement
“The seed,†he acknowledges, “was planted by Matta.â€
Like the abstract expressionists, Carone seeks “a spontaneous image as a consequence of a gesture…dictated more by the subconscious than by a rational, disciplined procedure.â€
Carone became interested in art as an adolescent during the summer of 1944, when he was asked to model for Hans Hoffman. His older brother, the well-known painter Nicolas Carone, was studying with Hoffman.
Through his brother and years of involvement in art, Carone has had a close association with many of the era’s most famous artists and critics, including Conrad Marca-Relli, James Brooks, Paul Jenkins, Sandro Chia, Larry Rivers, Balcolm Greene, James Rosenquist, Duane Hanson, Thomas Hoving, Clement Greenberg and many others.
His extensive professional biography lists one-person exhibitions in such museums as the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, the Boca Raton Museum, Don and Dottie Jacobs Gallery at Georgetown College, Kentucky, and the Palazzo Panni Museum in Arco di Trento, Italy, along with numerous leading private galleries.
Paintings by Carone are included in the permanent collections of Bard College at Simon’s Rock, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts; Bass Museum, Miami Beach, Florida; Boca Raton Museum of Art, Boca Raton, Florida; Fort Lauderdale City Hall, Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Hoover Collection, Albion College, Albion, Michigan; Illinois State Museum, Springfield, Illinois; Iona College, New Rochelle, New York; Lowe Art Museum, Coral Gables, Florida; Federica Matta; Ramuntcho Matta; Roberto Matta; Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida; North American Rockwell Corporation;
Firebird, Acrylic on Paper, 13 x 9 3/4 inches, 2008

MAMAJUANA CAFÉ CELEBRATES A GRAND OPENING IN TRUE “MIAMI STYLEâ€
Coral Gables, Florida which is no stranger to
fine dining establishments is about to get a culinary boost from an
indigenous Dominican miracle potion named “Mamajuanaâ€. The owners of the
famous Mamajuana Café in New York are ready to open their doors locally and
treat Miami residents to the feel, sights, tastes, and sounds that have had
the Big Apple buzzing for years.
A formal ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 6:30 pm with Coral
Gables city officials, celebrities and the owners of Mamajuana (Victor
Osorio, Carlos Saint-hilaire). Following that “welcome†into the South
Florida community, the kick off celebration will commence. Passed hors de
oeuvres, Mojitos courtesy of Bacardi, Champagne courtesy of Korbel and fresh
rolled cigars courtesy of South Beach Cigar Shop will keep guests of this
high end soiree smiling as they are the first to step foot into Mamajuana in
Miami.
Mamajuana represents a place where all five of the senses will delight.
Nestled across the street from “The Village of Merrick Park†Mamajuana Café
will embark guests on a journey to a far off “paradiseâ€. A full-on
entertainment and dining experience, Mamajuana Cafe was created for the
patron possessing an appreciation for culture, art, and cuisine. The venue
is an attraction in itself as it stays true to pre and post Columbian
Dominican culture.
The owners of Mamajuana Café considered every detail as they carefully
blended pre-Columbian artifacts and feel with old world Spanish
architecture. The name “Mamajuana†itself is derived from a drink created by
the Taino Indians who are indigenous to the Dominican Republic. The
Mamajuana drink is a concoction made of herbs, roots, rum, and wine which
has been used as a cure all that treats everything from impotency to the
flu.
Much like the Mamajuana drink the Café will act as a cure all for patrons as
the venue transports them from the mundane to an exotic Dominican paradise.
One can indulge in amazing cocktails, an award-winning wine list (under the
direction of Sommelier Yamil Martinez) and live entertainment. But the real
star of the show is the cuisine. Acclaimed Chef Ricardo Cardona, a pioneer
of Nuevo Latin Cuisine who created the Mamajuana menu in New York will
oversee the kitchen creating the menu in Miami as well. Cardona, who has
been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, The
L.A. Times, and The Chicago Tribune, has worked in a variety of French and
American restaurants before accepting his current task at this venue
situated in one of the most prominent areas of South Florida.
On Thursday February 19th 2009 the grand opening will be like an awards
ceremony complete with a red carpet filled with local, regional and
national/international celebrities and dignitaries including: Aide to Miami
Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Roddy Gomez, Coral Gables Chamber of
Commerce and the Dominican American National Chamber of Commerce, Florida.
Onlookers will get to feast their eyes on all that equals a “wow†factor
such as the most fabulous exotic vehicles out in the market parked out front
courtesy of Elite Luxury Services, body painted models and performers
courtesy of Zhantra Entertainment and Drawing on People, music, surprise
performances and much, much, more. Once inside the venue, guests will
have the opportunity to sit amidst the beautiful ambiance the ownership had
created, including original artwork by artist Alex Yanes.
Guests, VIPS including: Tito Puente Jr., Fernando Del Rincon, Tony Andrade,
Nuestra Belleza Latina Alejandra Espinoza, Shalim, Jorge Moreno, Carlos
Navarro, Charytin Goyco, Karol Rosa, Liset Alea, and media will be present
as this opening takes everyone on a journey, a fabulous one embracing a
concept straight from NYC to the city of beaches and amazing nightlife-
Miami.
The Mamajuana grand Opening will take place with a ribbon cutting at 6:30pm,
cocktail reception with music from 7-10pm.
Promotional partners include: Presidente Beer, Perry Ellis
International/Cubavera,
Got It Concierge, Gables Magazine, One Source Branding, and the UM
Transplant Foundation.

opening festivities, please contact: Creativas Group (305) 968-2384 and via

Contemporary Chinese Art Born of Ancient Traditions
Cao Xiaodong and Li Xiaofeng
The country’s first major exhibition of paintings by Cao Xiaodong and porcelain sculpture by Li Xiaofeng.
Although his computerized screen-pattern technique and compositions clearly place Xiaodong in the sphere of contemporary art, his use of traditional tones and the sense of nostalgia from the newspaper and magazine photos he reproduces cause critics to link his unique style with ancient watercolor and ink landscapes. He is well known in China for his 500-portrait mural of Chinese who were famous from 1911 to 1949.
Li Xiaofeng, a 43-year-old Beijing artist, has found a way to link his contemporary work with traditional Chinese art stretching back to the 10th Century. In his art, the links are literal: he sews shards of porcelain from the Song, Ming, Yuan, and Qing dynasties on a leather undergarment to created full-length dresses and men’s jackets, complete with neckties.

César Paternosto
Painting and Sculpture 1970 – 2008
Born in Argentina in 1931, César Paternosto has exhibited widely in Latin America and abroad. Since he began working as an artist in the early 1960s, Paternosto has been in the vanguard of abstraction in Latin America. An expert on the symbolic systems of Pre-Columbian civilizations, Paternosto has used his own photography and drawings to document and analyze the ancient remains of the region. Paternosto’s exploration of Amerindian abstraction has fueled his artistic work of the last twenty years.
“[…] Ever since the early 1930s, when Alexander Calder visited Piet Mondrian’s studio and had that marvelous vision of imagining his neat rectangles as if they were flying through space, nobody had achieved a similar effect to the one conceived and executed by Paternosto with his pictures painted on the sides of the canvas, with the resulting effect described earlier, of glowing weightlessness.”
Francisco Calvo Serraller, The Edge of Light, in César Paternosto, exhibition catalogue; Segovia: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente, 2004.

by Gilda Sacasas
The art of Gilda Sacasas evokes the distinctive character of the eternal feminine. Her paintings are a poetic expression of her dreams and surroundings, created to enchant and visually stimulate the viewer’s imagination. In this exhibition the women appear to be confident and strong, yet at the same time feminine and soft. Sacasas is an artist of intense expression, has the power to impress the mind and arouse feelings of love, life and spirit.
Sacasas is a Cuban American contemporary artist who focuses on figures and color. Colors that endow her pieces with light, depth, mood, movement and energy projecting inner spiritual peace. Through her bold use of color, the real world she sees, becomes her world on canvas. Her experiences, memories and feelings, painting from the heart.
Sacasas’ space is located opposite to Ponce Circle Park where the cultural program Art in the Park is returning for it’s Second year . Live Jazz music, and local artists exhibitions. Free to the public.

[Tall Curved Drawers (One Of A Kind) – Makore drawer fronts are framed in Ebonized oak. The drawer handles are carved from Ebonized Oak. Sand blasted glass has been profiled and built into the sides of the drawers. The curved drawers are created by bending thin layers of wood together and gluing them. Dimensions: 60in H X 23in. W X 22in D (Click on image for larger view)]
Andrew Muggleton is a true artisan who creates stunning furniture designs, many of which are one-of-a-kind. In designing his contemporary furniture, Muggleton combines extraordinary woods with metal and glass to create furnishings with spare, elegant lines. Dining room tables and chairs, console tables, beds, entertainment units and sets of drawers are crafted with a nod to comfort and an eye towards beauty. His furniture designs are innovative but not complicated, and usually feature large curves and a mix of materials – solid wood, veneer, metal and glass.

[Aluminum Dining Table – Rectangle dining table made using Bird’s Eye maple and Aluminum curved supports. All dining tables are custom made to order to any size. Materials: Bird’s Eye maple Wood, Aluminum curved supports with a glass top. Dimensions as shown: 64in (L) x 42 (W) x 30in (H) (Click on image for larger view)]
SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY, SIMPLIFY
Much like Henry David Thoreau, a complex man of many talents who worked hard to shape his craft and his life, simplicity is a hallmark of Muggleton’s design philosophy. “Keeping a design simple and avoiding the trap of filling empty space with unnecessary clutter is my most difficult – and most rewarding – challenge,†says the British born designer who now works out of his studio in Longmont, Colorado. “Simplicity in life is difficult and complicated to achieve,†added Muggleton. “It is easy to have too much going on and spend too much time organizing it.â€
COMPLEX PROCESS YIELDS GRACEFUL ELEGANCE
Muggleton creates high quality modern furniture by bending and shaping exotic woods and blending other materials such as metal and glass to achieve the desired outcome. “The method of making curved furniture is a complex process, which has been practiced for centuries,†says Muggleton, who went on to explain: “Many thin layers of wood are joined together, placed on a mould and inserted into a vacuum press. The vacuum press shrinks itself around the mould, contorting the wood over the new shape. The press delivers a cumulative pressure of almost 4 tons over the new design.†Once the body of the work had been created in this way, says Muggleton, the same process is used to apply beautiful veneer onto the surface.

[Lotus Bench – Bent Bird’s Eye maple ends enclose the natural flowing arched base, inlaid with wenge. The seat is upholstered in Ultra-suede. Materials: Bird’s Eye Maple and Wenge wood and upholstered in Ultra-suede – Available in other woods and sizes. Dimensions as shown: 23in (W) x 71in (L) x 31in (H) – Three Person Bench, 20in (W) x 60in (L) x 31in (H) – Two Person Bench (Click on image for larger view)]
Elements of engineering, structure and architecture are all incorporated into Muggleton’s work, and each serve to inspire him daily. “Buildings, bridges and archways new and old all provide a fundamental foundation for my designs,†he says. Explaining his affinity for creating curved furniture, Muggleton says, “Everything in nature is curved, from the smooth pebbles on a beach to an egg. Sharp jagged edges do not make you feel at ease; but a field of straw bending in the wind, now that is inviting. This is the reason my work involves such beautiful and subtle curves.â€

[Macassar Chaise Lounge – Beautifully stitched and upholstered leather supports are secured to stainless steel curved rails. The headrest is also upholstered in leather. The base is curved and tapered in Macassar Ebony, which is considered one of the most lustrous and beautiful of the ebony wood family and is notoriously difficult to bend. The seat can be positioned at an infinite number of angles for whether you are reading or simply relaxing. Materials: Macassar Ebony wood and Stainless Steel and Leather. Dimensions as shown: 20in (W) x 59in (L) x 29in (H) – Available in other woods and sizes (Click on image for larger view)]
Andrew Muggleton was born in Aldershot, England. He graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in manufacturing engineering and worked throughout the world as a design engineer before moving to the United States in 1999 to develop his passion for furniture design. His work has been featured in a number of well respected magazines, including The Robb Report, Architecture & Design of the West, Northern Home, Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine and Wood Art Today. Portraits Leonardo Hidalgo • Shie Moreno
Saturday, November 22, 8 pm – until

Hidalgo, Portrait of Linda Evangelista, acrylic on canvas, 2003, 70 x 50 in
Leonardo Hildalgo
Breaking the mold of traditional portraiture, Ecuadorian born Hidalgo crosses the line between graphic art and fine art, his recent work focuses on his subject’s face. He holds firmly that eyes are windows of the soul and that a person’s essence is captured within. Hidalgo portraits are more than a reflection of a person’s image. He studies his subjects closely to identify their personality. Each brushstroke and color is considered to bring the best of that person into the canvas. Hidalgo lives and works in Miami. He has gained notoriety with his dynamic and provocative fine art, murals and portraits; “I will never lose the child I have inside me. It is what makes me see this tough world beautifully and allows me to survive.†Today his paintings are a true reflection of that vision.
Shie Moreno
Shie was born in La Habana,Cuba, migrated to Los Angeles and moved to Miami. Life in L.A. is where Shie was introduced to an emerging subculture defined by distinctive musical, dance and art forms that captured the essence of the surrounding urban environment. As inner city tensions rose between different groups in East L.A., Shie and his family moved to West Miami. Touched by the energy in the streets, Shie began to explore the world of aerosol art. Experimenting with this new medium became a defining feature in this artist’s ventures in the city, in his many quests to visibly conquer the streets of Miami. Rather than assimilating to the mainstream, he asserts his own path as an artist. Since the millennium, Shie’s shifted his focus to creating art to be enjoyed indoors, while remaining active as a street artist. He proclaims that through his art he can understand himself and his purpose on earth. His study of calligraphy, sketch work and imagery become synthesized in his work, resulting in spontaneity poised with earnest examination of color, letterforms and composition.
