Wynwood mezcaleria Melinda’s announces today that it is partnering with other South Florida bars and Q, the Brooklyn-based maker of spectacular mixers, to host “HIGHBALL’R,” a celebration, open to the public, of the simple, yet incredibly elegant highball cocktail.

A special HIGHBALL’R menu of highball cocktails will be available for one night only, with drinks from an all-star cast of South Florida bartenders including Gaston Gonzalez (Casa Florida), Diego Nave (Tacology), Emiliano Gonzalez (Casa Florida), Ricardo Astudillo (Ilegal Mezcal), Alejandro Noriega (Santa Teresa), and Marco Nava (Cantina la Veinte).

Esquire declares “The highball is making a comeback…They are the antidote to seven-ingredient mixology hijinks, a respectable respite from your martini habit, and the drink of the post-experienced drinker.”

So what is a highball? To say it’s a couple ounces of spirit (whiskey, gin, etc) poured into glass and topped with a haphazard squirt of club soda or tonic is to undervalue what differentiates a highball cocktail from the vodka-sodas we all drank in college.

A truly great highball is built from the glass, up. It starts with a sleek, slender highball glass a chilled at freezing temperatures. The glass is removed from the freezer and filled with “ice so clear that you can read fine print through it.” About two ounces of spirit are added. And then, holding the glass at an angle, the bartender pours slowly the chilled mixer of choice. This technique maximizes the mixer’s carbonation ensuring the drink is just as fizzy on the last sip as the first.

Esquire continues, “The attention to detail is palpable. There’s a bracing fizz and a steady undercurrent of whisky from first sip to last, with no watered-down sludge at the end; ye olde whisky soda, by comparison, tastes like a bad accident.

When asked ‘What’s in a highball and what makes it different?’ Masahiro Urushido of New York’s Katana Kitten replied, ‘Care and love. It’s all about how you make it.’

The Education Fund (EducationFund.org) celebrates the culinary dreams and ambitions of high school and middle school students at the 2019 Taste of Education presented by Sapoznik Insurance on Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Marlins Park, 501 Marlins Way in Miami.

Taste of Education showcases the gastronomic talents of students from 17 culinary programs in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Students competing in 30 teams will prepare gourmet bites and vie for $20,000 in top prizes. The judges – top local chefs and hospitality executives – will determine the winning teams. This year’s culinary panel features celebrity chefs Ralph Pagano, Allen Susser, André Bienvenu, Letty Alvarez, Dayanny De La Cruz, Ingrid Hoffmann, Paula DaSilva, and Max Santiago. Each team will present their dish and make their pitch, hoping to wow the judges with their skills and presentations.

Guests will feast on the students’ creations and have an opportunity to “take a selfie with a chef” and enjoy mini-installations including walking through a food forest. The National Hotel, the cinematic Art Deco treasure in the heart of South Beach, is partnering with Neighbors 4 Neighbors, a nationally recognized nonprofit and partner of local broadcast station CBS4, to host Chefs 4 Neighbors, a culinary benefit event to raise funds to support individuals and families with immediate needs. Proceeds from the event will go towards Neighbors 4 Neighbors’ Family Fund and victims of Hurricane Michael through a partnership with Farm Share. The Family Fund program offers financial assistance to otherwise self-sufficient individuals who have an immediate need or emergency, preventing them from entering the cycle of poverty. The Family Fund will purchase supermarket gift cards for families experiencing food insecurity.

The Confidante Miami Beach, alongside Bird & Bone’s Chef Richard Hales and Tequila Revolución’s National Sales Director, Adrian Sosa, invite guests to a special tequila pairing dinner on Friday, October 26. The inaugural evening kicks off The Confidante’s new monthly dinner series aptly named The Confidante Dinner Club, which will feature a specially curated collaboration with a new spirit brand each month. Embracing the warm, welcoming and vibrant glamour of The Confidante, the evening will take place in The 1930s House, a private, outdoor Spanish-style bungalow originally built as a one-bedroom family home. Once located across the street from the Collins Avenue hotel, the structure was picked up by crane and relocated to The Backyard at The Confidante, where it currently resides. The evening features passed hors d’oeuvres and retro-themed welcome cocktails created in partnership with The Confidante’s food and beverage team and Tequila Revolución’s master mixologists. Renowned local chef Richard Hales, Chef/Partner of American-inspired on-site eatery Bird & Bone, will showcase a specially curated three-course menu expertly paired with three different expressions of Tequila Revolución.

Chef Hales and Sosa will be present to guide guests through the culinary journey, explaining how the flavors of each dish pair with the tequila. As a 15+ year veteran in the wine and spirits industry, Sosa has represented various prestigious tequila brands such as Patron, Sauza, Cazadores and Partida. MegaRumba to Support Those in Need of Food and Medicine in Venezuela

SWARM and iHeart’s TU 94.9 have once again partnered to bring MegaRumba to Wynwood. This year, they will be raising funds in support of the Cuatro Por Venezuela Foundation, which has been fighting hunger, illness, and poverty in Venezuela since 2016. Taking place on the 20th of July, this festival of independence for all Hispanic cultures welcomes everyone to join in this single collective celebration, being a source of mutual pride and unity, and allowing everyone to enjoy a variety of Latin music, flavors, dancing, arts and crafts.

For the first time ever in the U.S., Danny Ocean will perform “Me Rehuso” at MegaRumba. Also performing live is Sofia Reyes, winner of an MTV Millennial, Latin Grammy and iHeart Media Award, as well as Grammy and Latin Grammy nominated bilingual Latin band, Locos Por Juana. Venezuelan singer/actor Victor Drijo and Nicole Favre will also join iHeart radio’s ever-popular DJ’s on center stage. In addition, there will be food trucks, arts & craft vendors, and several fully stocked bars, offering everything from the best of Bud Light and mixed drinks to specialty flavored mojitos by Cruzan.

The festival will run from 7PM to 3AM and it will continue to be FREE to enjoy. With the purchase of a $10 donation ticket, people can help Venezuela, but also enjoy a free Bud Light and shot from the giant Aguardiente Ice Luge ($19 value). Cuatro Por Venezuela Foundation will receive 100% of that ticket, so they may continue to provide educational, medical, and nutritional aid to Venezuelans in need. “Venezuela is under a profound humanitarian crisis, and we want to do something about it. One of the great things about Miami is our ethnic unity and getting to witness the neighborly love as the melting pot of Latin cultures come together in times of need. We are eager to help in this time of desperation in Venezuela and are excited to contribute towards uniting others in helping as well,” says Tony Albelo, SWARM CEO. South Florida has the largest concentration of Venezuelans in the United States, and SWARM is hoping to make a positive impact towards getting Venezuela some much needed help.

On June 30, Schnebly Redlands Winery will release the Lychee fruits of their labor in a most entertaining way during their Lychee Summer Celebration (LSC), partnering for the first time with the South Dade Chamber of Commerce and the American Cancer Society. The family friendly event has been a source of pride to the area, with South Florida being the only place in the Continental United States where the Lychee fruit is grown. The celebration will begin at 2pm, when the Farmer’s Market opens with 50 vendors and six food trucks. At the Grand Tiki Culinary Lounge, guests will expand their food knowledge and watch Cooking Demos on how to incorporate lychee, local and organic foods in the kitchen. A family Mud Run, an awards ceremony, and live music will round out the celebration only to culminate with a patriotic fireworks display.

“This year’s Lychee harvest is the largest crop we’ve seen in years, not only did the trees survive Hurricane Irma, but the crop was actually improved by the stress of Irma; it’s a testament to the strength of the South Florida community and its agricultural roots,” says Peter Schnebly, Founder of Schnebly Winery. During the Summer Celebration, the Winery will be offering three Lychee wines, and three limited special release Lychee beers from Miami Brewing Company. Several South Florida restaurants and food trucks will offer their culinary take on the Lychee fruit by way of creative recipes, such as Lychee Seafood Ceviche and Lychee Martini Ice Cream. The possibilities are endless, and Schnebly can’t wait to see their partners get creative with this year’s harvest at the Culinary Grand Tiki Lounge featuring StartUP FIU Food Mentors such as Half Moon Empanadas, Pro Kitchen Hub, My Ceviche, and Lulu’s Ice Cream, to name a few.

While guests enjoy the different variations of Lychee, they can also browse 200+ classic/modern Chevrolet Corvettes, custom cars, Jeeps, 4x4s and other classics throughout the day. The Lychee Summer Celebration Meet Up will be hosted by Corvettes & Coffee and Cecil’s Jeep Fam. Guests can also explore over 40+ artisan and craft vendors in the Artist Colony as they sculpt, sew and sand down hand-made goods. In addition, Live Painting Sessions will showcase some of the area’s best muralists using 40 ft. long shipping containers as their canvas.

At 5pm, the first Schnebly Family Mud Run will kick off, benefitting the American Cancer Society to fund cancer research. Participating runners will be given a glow necklace to display the Cancer they’ll be running for, while conquering an “all new” course compete with obstacles. While the five-kilometer course will honor the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners during an official ceremony before the fireworks, every runner will receive a medal to commemorate their run. All proceeds from the run will go to the American Cancer Society, and anyone who buys a ticket for the run will get free admission to the Lychee Summer Celebration; family members get special pricing on LSC tickets with Runner Registration.

Grillin N’ Chillin kicks off BBQ season with a full-blown countryside event that’s free for the entire family. Whether you’re craving backyard barbecue spare ribs, a southern brisket or a mouthwatering pulled pork sandwich, Grillin N Chillin has compiled 40-50 BBQ vendors from around town offering everything from Memphis style barbecue to Brazilian churrasco. Celebrating its 4th anniversary, this year’s festival will take place at the Wynwood Marketplace, more commonly known for hosting Wynwood Art Walk’s block party.

At Grillin’s Kitchen Lab, South Florida’s premier pit masters will take center stage to smoke the competition out at this year’s BBQ Cook Off. In between cooking demos, their saucy host will perform a ROAST comedy show. In addition, they will pit two local backyard chefs and their best burger recipe at Miami’s Best Backyard Burger competition. For the first time ever, Grillin N’ Chillin will have a Veggie Corner, where Miami’s top, vegetarian and vegan eateries will showcase their menu. While kids enjoy the Family Fun Zone, adults can relax at The Pit, a pop-up BBQ-infused sports bar that will have bars and live music, or they can “Get Lost in the Sauce” at the huge sauce bar. Be sure to pick up some SWARM Bar Bucks online to save money on mixed drinks (($25 for $45 value at the bar). Also, bring your furry pups, because the Hot Dogz playground will have plenty of treats for them to enjoy. In addition, the Animal Adoption Truck will be on site for those looking to take home a pet. To round off a day of good BBQ, Grillin N’ Chillin has compiled a number of popular dessert vendors who will be ready to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Perhaps the coolest feature at this year’s Grillin N’ Chillin is both the humanitarian and ecological stand that it’s going to take. SWARM, the creators of this festival, will set up a Miami Rescue Mission tent, so that people can sponsor a meal for a hungry person. In addition, it will be “going green” by partnering with Debris Free Oceans to become a zero-waste event. “To date, no other event in South Florida has taken this into consideration, so we’re excited to have proper sorting, composting and recycling stations in addition to other green efforts,” says Tony Albelo, CEO at SWARM.

As part of the Living Together Performance Series, The Maggic Banquet, a participatory food-performance by the internationally acclaimed Miami and Barcelona-based artist Antoni Miralda, will celebrate our city’s diverse cultural heritage by tracing the culinary history of Maggi, the ubiquitous and universal seasoning brand. Presenting dishes from the kitchens of Miami’s various ethnic groups—all made with Maggi—in an altar-like buffet, Miralda explores the commodification and globalization of food and tradition. Accompanied by music, a special beverage, and a zine published with recipes in English, Spanish, and Creole, The Maggic Banquet will turn the terrace of EXILE Books into a food-for-thought artwork.
Born in Terrassa in the province of Barcelona, Spain, Antoni Miralda has been using food as his art medium since the late 1960s. He often creates public and ritual events centered in popular culture and traditions, especially culinary ones. The Honeymoon Project (1986–92), was an international series of ceremonial and participatory actions at multiple sites that imagined the wedding of New York’s Statue of Liberty with the Columbus Monument in Barcelona, two diametrically opposite icons of freedom and conquest. Since 1971 Miralda has lived and worked in the U.S., and since 1993 has spent much of his time in New York and Miami, where he started FoodCultura, a project that includes archives and collections, and that produces exhibitions and events around the world which explore the subjects of food diversity and its relation to culture. He was the subject of major retrospectives at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid in 2010 and the MACBA in Barcelona in 2016.

The Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation recently completed its XIII Annual Wine and Food fund raiser on Friday, January 26th. The event sold out quickly and turned into another resounding success with the help and support from the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne, The Nobis Foundation, The ARC of South Florida, our long standing partner Manos del Sur and community members at large.

Thirteen participating restaurants from our community prepared food delicacies to match the wines. Twenty four wineries competed for the recognition of Best in Show White and Red.

According to five independent judges, the winning white wine was B de Chanzy, a Rose from Provence, France, a delightful blend of Grenache and Syrah.

The winning red wine was a Merlot from Deerfield Ranch in Sonoma Valley, CA.

Coconut Grove Seafood Festival’s Two-day Event

What better way to kick off Stone Crab Season than to enjoy it by the sea at the iconic Miami Marine Stadium with seafood vendors, live Caribbean beats, a family fun zone, mojito bars, and more! The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival is a waterfront celebration of all things seafood. With proceeds going towards Celebration of the Sea Foundation, the two-day event will offer South Florida the chance to savor some of the freshest seafood all-day-long with over 25 gourmet seafood partners. This family-oriented event offers seafood lovers the chance to buy fresh seafood at the Casablanca Fish Market and savor everything from lobster rolls to conch fritters, all while browsing the market exhibiting nautically themed jewelry, art, and decorations.

Other fun features of the festival include The Shipwreck Bar & Lounge, which will be jammin’ with live acoustic music, crafted cocktails and plenty of lounge seating. The Celebration of The Sea Kids’ Discovery Zone will offer inflatable slides, games, free activities, face painting and a scuba-diving tank with professional instructors. In addition, the festival’s official charity partner will have a wide variety of hands-on environmental and educational exhibits along with exciting games and activities for all. The Kitchen Lab will offer some delicious demonstrations with local and celebrity chefs. On Saturday, there will be a “Clam Chowder Contest” with two seafood enthusiasts who go head-to-head for a cash prize. Also on Saturday, Phuc Yea, Poke 305, and Andy Bates, who is known for his hearty street food will all conduct a cooking demo. Bubbles, Michael Jackson’s Chimp, Really Does Paint!

Miami, June 8, 2017: After great success at Art Basel 2012, the paintings by Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee, Bubbles, and many others will be on display for 10 days at Frames USA & Art Gallery in Miami. The opening reception will be on July 21, 2017 from 6pm-10pm where the public can view and purchase a very unique piece of original ape art.

“Purchasing a piece of original art by apes is a collectible. It creates conversation, it is a form of expression, and it is rare”, Adam Brand says, owner of Frames USA. “Not to mention that the proceeds from the sales of the art will go to an amazing cause”

Over the years, zoos and sanctuaries have dabbled into selling artwork at their gift shops by resident animals to raise money. However, the purpose of this art show, Apes that Paint, extends beyond that. It seeks to establish the fact that apes are artists without judgment and second that these ape artists are contributing to the fundraising efforts for The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida.

Aside from artworks from our star artist Bubbles, the exhibition will host other wonderful original pieces from celebrity apes. Among them, the art of chimpanzees from Planet of the Apes, and orangutans from the movie Going Apes, and NBC’s soap opera Passions. Surfside, Miami’s uptown beachtown, is bringing a slice of the Caribbean to locals at the next First Fridays event to be held on Friday, June 2. During this family-friendly beach picnic, locals can kickoff the weekend with a visit to Surfside’s pristine beach for a number of fun activities. Enjoy a tepee village, an interactive drum circle, a Bahamian Junkanoo marching band and a fashion showcase from Miami-based boutique BASK and designer Sonia Trussardi Sepe. The Town of Surfside invites Miamians to pack their picnic baskets for a family-friendly Moroccan Beach Picnic to kick-off the town’s much-anticipated monthly First Fridays event on Friday, May 5. Unlike any other community event, this casual soiree takes place on Surfside’s pristine beach and is a great way to experience the ever-evolving area like a local. Enjoy live Middle Eastern music, belly dancers, drum circle and tipi village for kids, cold-pressed juices, coconut water courtesy of Harmless Harvest, and healthy snacks. For a hint of beachside couture, luxury women’s fashion boutique, Le Beau Moroc, plans to showcase new seasonal Moroccan designs during a fashion show on the sand. Not to mention, guests can take refuge from the sun under ornately designed oversized tents. Wynwood will see the streets come alive for the fourth annual Wynwood Life! It is held in Miami’s Art and Cultural District and is a true celebration of all things we love about South Florida – Food, Art, Music and Fashion! Twenty thousand people will fill the streets perusing art, crafts, jewelry and over 100 vendors all while being entertained by live art and music and noshing on local fare from over 40 food trucks!

WynwoodMap.com and The RAW Project will curate the Live Art Stage featuring a wide variety of street artists from around the World. The festival encourages students and emerging artists to take part in the “Emerging Artist Competition”. Wynwood Life is proud to have the Miami Art & Design Education Institute (M.A.D.E.) as the presenting sponsor, because M.A.D.E is known for elevating people’s art and design career to the next level by way of their industry-driven approach to education, through coaching, mentoring, and networking in the heart of Miami’s Art District. In addition, WYN 317 Gallery will be the gallery partner as well as being on the selection committee.

Over 20 bands and DJs will occupy the Live Music Stage featuring local favorites and hometown bands gone big such as Otto Von Schirach, Tamboka, Jeano Music, Hoy Palloy, Zander and many more.

The Style Lounge will offer free services including nail polish changes, a braid station and Henna. The Spot Barbershop will have a pop up for the men, and stylists will showcase multiple fashion shows by local boutiques, fashion bloggers including iShine365, Dyme Lyfe, graciouslylovedllc, Koko and Palenki, to name a few.

The Wynwood Culinary Showcase will feature top restaurants and chefs from the area providing teachable moments such as Chef Cesar Zapata from Phuc yea, who will teach us how to cook a whole fish. This year, the stage will also invite South Florida chefs outside of Wynwood who are taking the culinary scene to a higher level. Scheduled to make demos are Max Santiago, Bunnie Cakes, Crave Clean, Copper 29, and more. The Bitter Truth will have a pop up where they’ll carve the ice for each cocktail with a chainsaw, and they will also compete against Employees Only to come up with the “Best Cocktail” at Wynwood Life.

Itâ€™s doggy day at the Social Hall! Bring your four-legged friends and provide another with a much needed home. For the pets, Concrete Beach will release â€œWoof Wortâ€, a specialty (non-alcoholic) doggy beer, and Wynwood-area vendors will provide a variety of treats, including delicious meals by Dishes for Dogs. For the humans, there will be hotdogs by Sweet Dogs and half-priced GROWLer fills. Jamieâ€™s Rescue is a cage free, no kill, organic feed rescue that has placed thousands of dogs, with an ongoing mission to place dogs and puppies that would remain on the streets or euthanized at local shelters.
