Just because we have to keep our distance doesn’t mean we can’t share the music and dancing we love — we’ll just do it safely at home. Miami Dade College’s Koubek Center presents its new virtual three-concert series Little Havana Social Club ¡en casa!, kicking off this Thursday, October 29 at 9 p.m. on their Facebook Page: @KoubekCenterMDC. The series continues on November 19th, and December 17th.
DJ and producer Mr. Pauer will host Little Havana Social Club ¡en casa! which will feature some of the best artists and groups in Miami. The series will showcase the danceable Miami funk of Los Wizzards, the one-of-kind experience of theater and dance with Teatro Salvaje, and the Caribbean soul music of singer-songwriter Keba. Along with reggae powerhouse Jahfe, singer and songwriter Leslie Cartaya and her reimaging of classic Cuban son with elements of jazz and funk; and the powerful poetry of rapper and spoken poetry artist Lyrical G, the first student-turned-professional mentor at the Guitars Over Guns program, this series promises to get you moving.
The performances will be filmed and edited by audiovisual director and producer Juan Enis who has worked with top Spanish and Latin American Artists including Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bose, David Bisbal, Enrique Bunbury, and La Oreja de Van Gogh, as well as has directed documentaries for Spanish Television(TVE) and ARTE, the European Television Channel (French and German). Nicaraguan-born and Miami- raised artist Luis Valle, aka El Chan Guri, whose easily recognizable style blends influences from indigenous cultures, and shamanism, will contribute to the visual vocabulary of the series. An internationally recognized artist, his work can be seen throughout South Florida as he has created commissioned murals, and paintings for public art projects, corporate clients, and neighborhood initiatives.

The New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS), prepares graduates of music programs for leadership roles in professional orchestras and ensembles. In the 33 years since its co-founding by Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas and Lin and Ted Arison, NWS has helped launch the careers of more than 1,150 alumni worldwide. A laboratory for the way music is taught, presented and experienced, the New World Symphony consists of young musicians who are granted fellowships lasting up to three years. The fellowship program offers in-depth exposure to traditional and modern repertoire, professional development training and personalized experiences working with leading guest conductors, soloists and visiting faculty. Relationships with these artists are extended through NWS’s extensive distance learning via the internet.

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) is launching a new, Miami-based project for local artists to showcase their talents. The project, titled SMDCAC Sessions, supports local artists in Miami financially, emotionally, and creatively during this difficult time.

The Center is reaching out to local performing artists who have an ongoing relationship with the center to perform a three to five-minute video performance that will be broadcast through the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center’s Facebook page.

SMDCAC will provide a guaranteed fee to each artist who participates as well as a call-to-action for audiences to donate to the artist or their cause during the performance.

Over the past three decades, Aziz has become world renowned as a singer and composer of his unique poetic verses. An exceptional player and daring composer, Spanish guitarist José Luis de la Paz has proven as comfortable working within the flamenco tradition as reimagining it with electronics or symphony orchestras. Not surprisingly, besides having five records under his name, he has collaborated with top flamenco singers and dancers including Carmen Linares, José Mercé, and Farruquito, but also with sound explorer Gustavo Matamoros, or the LA Philharmonic with Gustavo Dudamel.

Her singing (her rich, sultry voice has elicited comparisons to Tracy Chapman), her poetic lyrics, and broad musical references suggest an update of the troubadour tradition in Cuban music.

Koubek Center is virtual, and brings you music from some of our favorite local musicians! Tune in for unique, 30-minute musical performances on Facebook and Instagram Live with Miami-based performers. The one and only Inez Barlatier stars in this week’s mini-music concert!

Inez Barlatier is a first-generation Haitian-American multi-disciplinary artist. She began her music career at the age of 12 years old as a member of her father’s band, Jan Sebon & Kazak International. Her life-long passion for multicultural and folkloric music informs her work. “[I love the] music from Africa, Brazil, Latin America, anything with roots in it,” she said in an interview. As for the lyrics, the subjects vary greatly, from love to social criticism, but the message “is positivity.”

WHAT: The Global Arts Project will livestream a free concert featuring award-winning artists Sammy Figueroa, Nestor Torres and Nicole Henry. The event will be broadcast in order to allow audiences the opportunity to enjoy the music of these talented musicians while in the safety of their own homes.

WHO: The concert is presented by The Global Arts Project, and will be hosted by Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Góngora and Ray Breslin, president of The Collins Park Neighborhood Association. The venue, the Miami Beach Woman’s Club, is sponsored by The South Beach Group.

Guitars Over Guns is a Miami-based 501(c)(3) non-profit that offers students from disadvantaged backgrounds a powerful combination of music education and strong mentoring relationships with professional musicians to help them overcome hardship, find their voice, and reach their potential as tomorrow’s leaders. Guitars Over Guns endeavors to create safe spaces for youth to express themselves through music, offering a supportive environment that empowers them to make positive choices at school, at home, and in their communities. Established in 2008, the organization has grown to include a satellite program in Chicago, and has served more than 3,000 students over the past decade.

The Guitars Over Guns program is made possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

The Koubek Center couldn’t go virtual without bringing you music from some of our favorite local musicians! They’ll be presenting 30 minute unique musical performances on Instagram and Facebook Live, featuring talented Miami performers such as Venezuelan violinist Daniela Padrón.

Daniela Padrón adapts some of the most well known pieces of J.S. Bach into different Venezuelan Folkloric Rhythms including joropo, gaita, merengue among others.

She is a Venezuelan-American violinist, nominated to the Latin Grammy (2013) as the violinist of the acclaimed Venezuelan world music band Gaêlica, in the Folk Music Category.

She has appeared at some of Venezuela’s most prestigious halls, including Teresa Carreño Cultural Complex, Central University of Venezuela, and Lia Bermudez Arts Center. Daniela is a proud Orchestra Conductor of one of the Miami Music Project’s children orchestras. She also runs her private studio with local and international students.

The open mic will feature several of our talented mentors and selected students, as well as special guests, singing original tunes and covers, in a diverse range of genres. Follow us on social media for performer and restaurant partner announcements.

Guitars Over Guns Goes LIVE! doubles-up as a Mentor Relief Fund. Join us in raising $35,000 as we look towards providing a stipend of at least $500 to every one of our mentors, in addition to their regular income which we have continued to provide them with, through the end of each city’s school year. We are grateful for the support of Savage Ticket, matching donations until we reach our goal.

Take part in supporting our mentors during these challenging times, as these live streaming events provide us a platform to generate funds for our Mentor Relief Fund. Many of our mentors lost their regular jobs, gigs, work contracts, and other income opportunities. Protecting their income is a statement of our values and our shared dedication to our students and our community.

Maybe it’s a rent payment, food on the table, a medical expense, or a way to support a family in need. We want to offer our mentors a sense of security and a token of gratitude while they continue to serve our students and our community with dedication, passion and resilience.
