Art Basel week is the time of the year when the vanguard of the art world converges on Miami Beach. This year, The Stage Miami will be presenting a gallery of the best of old school hip-hop and new urban sounds during the height of Art Basel, featuring De La Soul on Thursday, December 5, the Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah on December 6 during Beats & Rhymes Fridays and Black Violin on Saturday, December 7, among others.

Black Violin
Black Violin wowed show-goers at The Stage this past summer with a performance that artfully combined classical influences with hip hop beats. Founders Kev Marcus (violin) and Wil B (viola) are four-time winners of “Showtime at the Apollo” who met while students at Fort Lauderdale’s Dillard High School of Performing Arts. The group, which now includes a drummer, cellist and a DJ, has also worked with Kanye West, 50 Cent,Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Aretha Franklin and The Eagles, among others.

Spilt Milk Projects, Gramps, and Ad Hoc (NYC) present the inaugural Look Alive Fest, featuring exclusive headlining Florida performances by seminal noise rock trio Wolf Eyes from Detroit, MI, and experimental rock outsiders Indian Jewelry from Austin, TX. The Look Alive Fest is a home grown alternative festival curated by working musicians, offering something radically different for discerning fans of adventurous music during Art Basel Miami Beach weekend. The event features both national headliners and notable local bands, including Lil Daggers, Teepee, Cop City/Chill Pillars, and Nerve City.

Wolf Eyes (Sub Pop, American Tapes, De Stijl),comprised of Nate Young, John Olson, and Jim Baljo, are undeniably one of the most vital, important American noise bands around today. They have released countless CD-Rs, LPs, and tapes since 1996, including collaborations with Black Dice, Smegma, Stare Case, academic jazz musician Anthony Braxton, and too many side projects to name. “Wolf Eyes remain one of the most important experimental bands in the world” according to Pitchfork Media. Wolf Eyes were recently featured on the cover of The Wire (their second time gracing the cover of the esteemed UK avant-garde magazine), which included a feature discussing the evolution of the band, as well as its newest album, No Answer: Lower Floors (2013, CD/LP via De Stijl). Wolf Eyes will headline the first night of the fest on Friday, December 6 at Churchill’s Pub, supported by Guardian Alien featuring drummer Greg Fox from Brooklyn black metal band Liturgy, a reunion set from Gainesville grunge rockers Chronic Youth, and performance piece by celebrated Bay Area noisemaker Rubber O Cement. Local support includes an increasingly rare appearance by psychedelic shoegaze band Teepee and the eccentric Cop City/Chill Pillars.

Indian Jewelry (Reverberation Appreciation Society) headlines the second night on Saturday, December 7 at Gramps. Indian Jewelry is a noise rock collective founded by Tex Kerschen and Erika Thrasher, accompanied by Mary Sharpe on percussion and electronics, along with a fluid, rotating cast of local musicians and collaborators. Together they are flagbearers for the long Texas tradition of outsider rock ‘n’ roll – a grand, precarious history spanning the 13th Floor Elevators and Red Krayola, Jandek and Butthole Surfers. As a prolific touring band, Indian Jewelry is noted for seizure inducing live shows, featuring little more than a strobe light in total darkness. “Indian Jewelry stand at a kind of musical crossroads,” according to Dazed and Confused Magazine, “where the gloriously dark moments of rock n’roll’s past hang side by side with clunky rave synths and a droned-out attitude.” Pontiak (Thrill Jockey), comprised of brothers Jennings, Van and Lain Carney who play neo-psychedelic rock with stoner rock flourishes, will provide direct support for Indian Jewelry, as well as White Mystery, a brother and sister garage rock duo from Chicago, IL, and The Wiggins from Houston, TX. Local support includes loner rock nomad Nerve City (Sacred Bones) with a full band, and purveyors of heavy psych, Lil Daggers (Beyond Beyond is Beyond).

Music and art collide at Mana Wynwood during Art Basel 2013 as the large event space, 3P Production and Flaunt Magazine play host to a 3-night concert series kicking off with electronic music band Darkside.

Flaunt Magazine; 3P Production, the creative team behind Bardot and III Points Festival; and Mana Wynwood, the largest multipurpose production studio and raw space in Miami?s Wynwood Arts District, will play host to a 3-night concert series during Art Basel Week that aims to bring art and music together. Art Basel at Mana Wynwood will bring some of electronic music?s most well known artists to the stage including Darkside, the collaborative duo of electronic producer Nicolas Jaar and guitarist Dave Harrington.

This one-of-a-kind concert series will be brought to life with an eye-catching mural project on the outer walls of Mana Wynwood titled Shoot for the Moon. In addition, the concert space will be transformed into an indoor garden oasis fittingly called the Sound Garden. The 3-night series will kick off with Darkside’s premiere show of their debut album, Psychic, on Thursday, December 5th.

DARKSIDE is the collaborative duo of electronic producer Nicolas Jaar and guitarist Dave Harrington. The two musicians have vastly different backgrounds, but over the course of several years of touring together they found common ground: DARKSIDE. Dave and Nico use each other as mediums, working on primal instinct and summoning a hybrid of electronic music and psychedelic rock with the kind of artistic depth and breadth for which the term ?progressive? was coined.

Miami Reggae Festival 11/23/13

Miami Reggae Festival
Saturday, November 23, 1:00pm-11:00pm
Peacock Park
2820 McFarlane Rd
Miami, FL 33133
www.rockersmovement.com

The Miami Reggae Festival and its organizers, Rockers Movement, have partnered with the non-‐profit organization TECHO to raise funds, food and awareness for residents living in poverty. The November 23rd event held at Coconut Grove’s Peacock Park will unify Miami’s diverse community through music while donating a portion of all ticket proceeds plus food collected at the event to aid Dade County residents living in poverty.

Music has always had the power to unite and inspire humanitarianism. “The Miami Reggae Festival takes it to the top, offering the highest quality of performance, political ambience and service to community available anywhere, “ says Carole Boyce Davies, Writer & Cornell University Professor of English and Africana Studies. “Truly international in orientation, there is no other place where one can experience such a rich presentation of the best in reggae talent. Miami proves again, this time through its Reggae Festival, that it is the place to be for the internationalizing of Caribbean culture.”

In reflection of South Florida’s diverse cultural heritage, the Miami Reggae Festival brings together music from around the world including Stephen Marley from Jamaica, Tiken Jah Fakoly from Africa’s Ivory Coast, Cultura Profética from Puerto Rico, Natiruts from Brazil, Midnite from St. Croix USVI, Gondwana from Chile, and many more -‐ a full musical lineup is below.

Attendees of the Miami Reggae Festival are asked to bring non-‐perishable and canned food items for donation in observance of Thanksgiving. The rations collected at the event will be organized that night by TECHO volunteers and immediately re-‐ distributed the following day to families in need in Coconut Grove, Overtown and Liberty City by artists, volunteers, and staff members of TECHO and Rockers Movement.

Subsequently, a portion of proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to TECHO -‐ a youth led non-‐profit organization at work in 19 countries including Latin American and the Caribbean. Through the joint work of families living in extreme hardship and youth volunteers, TECHO seeks to overcome poverty. “Rockers Movement will amplify our message and continue to scream that Miami is committed to overcoming poverty,” says Nicolas Berardi, US CEO of TECHO. To date, the organization has mobilized more than half a million youth volunteers and built over 3,000 houses for families living in Latin American slums.

Rockers Movement, in association with Fertile Earth Foundation, Unity is Change, Dade Recycling, Artecology Organization & Lady Green Recycling, is proud to promote the Zero Waste Initiative at Miami Reggae Festival. In a committed effort towards sustainability, the Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle model will be implemented to prevent trash and organic materials from going into landfills and incinerators, thus diverting over 20 tons of waste and greatly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The festival will also work food vendors to collect edible food items to feed people and food scraps to feed animals.

Miami Reggae Festival is a family-‐friendly event featuring an artisan village of visual arts and handicrafts; various culinary vendors; an “Artecology Experience,” offering interactive games for kids about sustainability, healthy living seminars and workshops, including AEROGA ® Yoga in the Park, meditation, and dance; plus drum sessions, a bike valet, and so much more.

Tickets for Miami Reggae Festival are currently on sale and can be purchased online and through various South Florida locations. General admission tickets are $45; VIP tickets are $75 and include access to a VIP lounge with private bathrooms. Kids 12 and younger are free when accompanied by a paid adult. In the spirit of unity and service, Miami Reggae Festival is offering free admission before 3 pm to all attendees who contribute two or more non-‐perishable food items.

Miami Reggae Festival is made possible with the support of the Miami-‐Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

LA CHIVA GANTIVA starts in Brussels with a group of Colombian percussionists playing together, in order to feel closer to their homeland and its rich musical heritage. Pushed by a desire to assert their roots and reproduce Colombian rhythms of yesteryear, like less well known rhythms such as the «champeta», the «chirimia» and the «mapalé», LA CHIVA GANTIVA uses traditional Caribbean instruments such as «la tambora», «el alegre», «el llamador» and «maracones». LA CHIVA GANTIVA does not stop there, they also incorporate instruments like the bass guitar, the clarinet and the saxophone which reflect the diverse influences of the group: Colombian (with the likes of Toto la Moposina, Lucho Bermudez and Petrona Martinez), Latin (Fania All Stars, Irakere), African (Fela Kuti and Tony Allen), Jazz (Lionel Hampton), Funk (the legendary James Brown) and Rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine).

The result of this soundclash is a unique musical style and explosive on-stage energy, that has opened their path to many big festivals throughout Europe. Since 2005, La Chiva Gantiva has played in the biggest festivals in Belgium, Portugal, Holland and Germany. La Chiva Gantiva continues to grow and to build upon their compelling and inspiring musical universe.

DJ Le Spam & Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on.

Spam Allstars were formed by Andrew Yeomanson, a/k/a DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993. He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami based artist Nil Lara. Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers & DJ skills with a live band.

In 2002, Spam Allstars began a weekly residency at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, which continues today. In 2003 they started monthly residencies in New York City, Gainesville, Tampa, Atlanta, and New Orleans, and playing nationally wherever people would host them. Today they perform 200+ shows, and average 56,000 miles each year.

HUKA Entertainment proudly announces the return of Rock The Ocean’s Tortuga Music Festival.

Tortuga Music Festival, produced and promoted by HUKA Entertainment, is a two-day music festival on the beach featuring nearly two dozen of the hottest artists in country, rock and roots music. Created together with the Rock the Ocean Foundation, the event serves to celebrate the festival’s ocean side setting while raising awareness of issues impacting the world’s oceans and supporting marine research and conservation.

Multiple award-winning recording and performing artists Luke Bryan and Eric Church will be hitting the beach this spring as headliners when Rock The Ocean’s Tortuga Music Festival returns to the sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach Park in Florida on April 12th and 13th. Joining headliners Luke Bryan and Eric Church will be Hank Williams Jr., Dierks Bentley, Brantley Gilbert, 38 Special, Parmalee and Eric Paslay.

As tens of thousands of fans enjoy the sun, songs, sand and surf at the unique oceanfront event, Bryan and Church will be joined by fellow first-wave lineup artists including San Francisco multi-platinum act Train, nine-time Grammy Award winner Sheryl Crow, country chart-topper Billy Currington, rock, folk, reggae and funk beach fusion pioneers Slightly Stoopid, reggae legend Ziggy Marley, powerhouse vocalist Brett Eldredge, folk singer-songwriter Brett Dennen, inventive roots rockers Delta Rae, “Chillin’ It” singer and celebrated songwriter Cole Swindell, Nashville rockers Moon Taxi, genre-jumping septet The Revivalists, folk/funk band White Denim, “Helluva Life” hit-maker Frankie Ballard, Paste’s Best of What’s Next sibling duo Brothers Osborne, “How She Rolls” singer Chase Rice, “Booze Cruise” hitmakers Blackjack Billy, modern folk rockers Sons of Fathers and blues-infused rock band Quaker City Nighthawks. Additional top-name talent will be revealed in the coming weeks.

“We’re incredibly excited to announce our return to the legendary white sands of Fort Lauderdale’s premiere beach,” says HUKA Entertainment co-founder and CEO A.J. Niland. “We’ve been fortunate to have the support of not only the community and fans but a tremendous response from artists as well, all of which is going to make us bigger and better in 2014.”

“When I first dreamed a few years ago of an event that would celebrate the ocean via music, I never imagined it would turn into one of the leading music festivals in America,” adds Rock The Ocean founder Chris Stacey. “Fort Lauderdale Beach on the majestic Atlantic Ocean is the perfect setting to remind everyone why the preservation of our waterways and marine life is so important.”
Niland says 2014’s Tortuga Music Festival lineup will feature a lineup similar to its inaugural year, where over 25,000 festival attendees enjoyed headliners Kenny Chesney and Eric Church along with The Avett Brothers, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, Jake Owen, Lynryd Skynyrd, and many more.

“I can’t imagine a better lineup in our first year than the one we had,” says Niland. “But we’re dedicated to making sure our next bill is even more impressive, if that’s possible, and have already confirmed top-caliber artists for 2014.”

Anchored by live music performances across three stages, the centerpiece to Tortuga Music Festival is its Conservation Village, curated by Stacey, where over 20 organizations dedicated to marine research and conservation will provide interactive, educational experiences for festival patrons.

Stacey notes that the Conservation Village will likewise offer premium content in its sophomore outing, after featuring such notables as The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, Shark Savers, Sea Turtle Oversight Protection and nineteen other exhibits in year one. “Guy Harvey is a rock star in his own right, and it was such a pleasure to have him here in 2013 signing autographs and meeting fans in the village to discuss conservation” says Stacey. “That’s a hard act to follow, so we’re pulling out all the stops this time around.”

Additionally, in 2013, festival-goers were encouraged to collect garbage at the event site to minimize the festival’s impact on the environment. “Over 1,000 bags were filled with waste by fans in our first year, which tells us that our cause is as important to music and ocean lovers as it is to us,” says Stacey.

“One thing we heard repeatedly this year from both the artists and the fans was how much fun everyone had with their feet in the sand and the sound of the waves blending with the music,” says Niland. “That makes it hard to forget who the true headliner of our event is – the ocean – and what we can do to make sure it returns every year.”

This SATURDAY at BASE, we are very to welcome Flinch to BASE at Space!

Los Angeles based beat maker Adam Glassco, better known as Flinch, is no stranger to the EDM world. A veteran producer who has progressed effortlessly from his beginnings in drum & bass and then electro, to current endeavors into jump-up and deeper, more melodic synth-based dubstep. The succession of sounds Flinch adheres to reflects a new breed of artists distinguished most by his ability to marry a massive, tear-out bassline with a melody that could serenade your grandmother, or create tracks that pair careful grit & distortion with catchy songwriting. A true tastemaker, Flinch consistently delivers a wide selection of cuts riding between the UK funky, club, moombahton, techno, garage, and dubstep genre lines. There is an undeniable buzz in the bass music world for Flinchʼs recent productions on labels like SMOG and Trouble & Bass records, but most notably the massive “World On Fire,” which has often been championed by Skrillex, 12th Planet, and Datsik and is making a huge impact with audiences worldwide

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is proud to present the return of the triple platinum-selling The Idan Raichel Project, an ever-changing ensemble of multicultural performers from Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and more, led by internationally-acclaimed singer-songwriter, producer and musician Idan Raichel. Launching the Center’s 2013-2014 Live at Knight Series, The Idan Raichel Project will perform hits such as “Mi’Ma’amakim” and “Boee,” as well as new songs from his album Quarter to Six on October 17 at 8:30 p.m. in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall.

“We look forward to welcoming The Idan Raichel Project back to our world-class stage. Raichel’s cross-cultural music is beautifully inspiring and is a perfect fit for South Florida’s robust multiethnic community,” said John Richard, president and CEO of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “At a time when headlines are dominated with news of war, it’s artists like Idan Raichel that remind us to celebrate cultural diversity.”

Since the release of its debut self-titled album in 2002, The Idan Raichel Project has been known for its fusion of Israeli pop music with Middle Eastern, African, Indian and global sounds. More than a decade later, Idan Raichel’s unique musical style and ability to collaborate with a variety of artists continues to make an impact – earning him one of the biggest-selling records in Israeli history and also catapulting him into a major figure in the international global music scene.

“If I had called the album just ‘Idan Raichel,’ people would have thought that Raichel is the main voice on all the songs. I wrote the songs and I arranged and produced them, but I perform them together with other vocalists and musicians. On the other hand, we are not a group. It’s something in between,” explains Idan Raichel. To date, more than 95 singers – ranging 16 to 91 years old – from dozens of different countries and cultural backgrounds have participated in the Project’s recordings or performances.

The Idan Raichel Project’s most recent album, Quarter to Six (2013), reflects on how to find peace at the end of life. The artist describes the album’s title as a metaphor for a crossroads within his own life – a time where he felt his Project had reached a period of change, reflection and transition. Musically, the record is more acoustic than his previous ventures and blends his mellow voice with electronics and a diverse lineup of world musicians such as Portuguese fado star Ana Moura, Palestinian-Israeli singer Mira Awad, German counter-tenor Andreas Scholl, Colombia’s Marta Gómez, Vieux Farka Touré and a selection of some of Israel’s top up-and-coming singers and musicians.

Prior to the release of Quarter to Six, Idan Raichel released four studio albums and a 3-CD collection of live recordings, launched a North American tour with longtime collaborator and Grammy Award winner India.Arie, and celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Idan Raichel Project with a series of sold-out concerts held at the Caesarea Amphitheater, an ancient Roman amphitheater near Tel Aviv. Idan Raichel has also had the privilege to perform at a Nobel Peace Prize awards ceremony and for President Obama at the Kennedy Center on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. In addition, the Project has headlined some of the world’s most prestigious venues including New York’s Central Park Summer Stage, Apollo Theater, Town Hall and Radio City Music Hall; Los Angeles’ Kodak Theater; the Sydney Opera House; Zenith and Bataclan in Paris; London’s Royal Albert Hall and many international festivals.

Miami’s Suenalo has been crowned the Miami New Times’ Best of Miami Awards: Best Latin Rock Band in 2005, and most recently Best Latin Band in 2011. Even the lengthy hyphenated description the band came up with themselves falls short of the true breadth of what they represent. If Suenalo’s one of a kind fusion is hard to pinpoint, it’s only because no one’s ever done anything quite like it before.

The Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz. Professor Lynch directs his hand picked ensemble of talented young musicians and performs with them as his own group.

Among his many achievements, Brian Lynch has long been known as a great conductor of the jazz jam session. As a member of the house band at the legendary Star Cafe sessions in the New York City of the early 1980s, with Junior Cook and Harold White, and as bandleader of the late night jams at the NY Blue Note in the 1990s, Lynch absorbed the philosophy and practice of the session at its highest level. Now he brings his knowledge and love of the form to Miami and PAX.

Practitioners of all genres from traditional to contemporary, from straight ahead to Afro-Cuban and world music, will be encouraged to participate and cross pollinate, young students and established artists alike. Standards will be kept high and protocol will be firmly in place to encourage the best musical result for players and listeners in the unique and informal atmosphere of PAX!

Brian Lynch

A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. His talents have been recognized by top placing in the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls (#3 Trumpet 2011 Critics Poll); highly rated reviews for his work in Downbeat, Jazziz and Jazz Times; 2005 and 2007 Grammy award nominations, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet The Composer.

“You can lose yourself in the pure energy of his playing, but at any moment you can switch your attention to the logic and craftsmanship of his music and find multiple rewards.” NEIL TESSER, Jazziz

“Lynch demonstrates that a dedicated, knowledgeable jazzman can play a diversity of styles with telling authenticity, and make the renditions extremely appealing to both musician and neophyte…Lynch is simply first-rate.” ZAN STEWART, Downbeat

Ray Liriano – Cantante/Compositor Dominicano, nos brinda una propuesta como trio cargada de Las influencias de rock alternativo, folk y ritmos latinos.

Bachaco is an international Afro-Caribbean Roots Rock band based out of Miami, Florida in the U.S. Their music successfully blends feel-good and conscious lyrics through the mix of Reggae, Dancehall and Ska with Rock, Hip-Hop and Colombian Cumbia. Their recent and much anticipated self-titled independent debut album is out now and features their hit singles “Cumbia Pa’ La Nena” and “Ni Una Lagrima” Their “Cumbia Pa’ La Nena” video, produced by Latin Grammy Winner video director Cesar Rodriguez, achieved rotation on MTV Tr3s and MTV Latin America. BACHACO was also selected as “Descubre & Download” Artist of the Month on the MTV Tr3s website during November 2012 where visitors downloaded the hit single “Cumbia Pa’ La Nena” completely free. Both singles reached the top 20 charts on AOL Radio’s Rock Latino station with “Cumbia pa’ la Nena” on #3 and “Ni Una Lagrima” on #1. BACHACO’s debut album also includes the hit singles “Jamaican Cumbia” as well as a special collaboration with South American Reggae legends Gondwana on “Cruzando Fronteras.”

Since its formation in 2007, Bachaco has performed over 300 concerts all the way from Argentina to Canada sharing stage and performing at the same events and festivals as other big names in the reggae and world music scenes such as Israel Vibration, Toots & The Maytals, Tribal Seeds, Ozomatli, Luciano, Easy Star All-stars, Midnite, Cultura Profetica, Gondwana, Los Cafres, Los Pericos, Bahiano, Alika, Jarabe de Palo, Los Amigos Invisibles, WAR, King Chango and many more. Bachaco has also showcased during the SXSW and LAMC music conferences thanks to support from BMI.

Bachaco’s members hail from Venezuela, Colombia, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Peru and the U.S. allowing their songs to naturally flow in both English and Spanish but the true language Bachaco speaks is its own music and what they transmit: An Explosive International High Energy Groove! That is simply the result of the band’s own diverse range of nationalities. BACHACO is a true multi-cultural experience.

Bachaco was initially conceived by Venezuelan brothers Edilberto “Eddy” Morillo, lead vocals, and Jose Morillo, bass and vocals, along with Domingo Medina on drums, also from Venezuela. The current 8-piece line up consists of: Edilberto “Eddy” Morillo on vocals, Domingo Medina on drums, Jamaican guitarist and vocalist Matthew Jacquette, Bruce McKinnon Jr., Miami-born half Colombian half Irish, on trumpet and vocals, Alexander Cruz, Puerto Rican, on trombone, Farid Cure on electric guitar, from Colombia, and Cristian “Mumbles” Rocha from Peru. Recently added to the lineup, John “JP” Guinan on SAX.

What is a Bachaco? The word Bachaco is the name given to a Leafcutter Ant in Venezuela. The same type of ant is found accross that Amazon Rainforest and in countries such as Panama, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil. The insect is used by Venezuelan indians to create a “picante” (hot sauce). We could say Bachaco is a musical Picante.

“Bienvenidos a vivir, bienvenidos a soñar” (welcome to live, welcome to dream) our first CD, brought us a lot of learning in different aspects of our life; in a musical and a personal way. After this dream came true… what it is next: work and work. Today El Zaguán is in the process of exploration, where we have found new rhythms, new ideas, and a new road without losing our essence and the wave that represent El Zaguán, giving us as a result song that will be heard soon and that probably would be in our next work.

However, If you haven’t heard about us until now; What is El Zaguán?:

El Zaguán is a rock group that has elements of reggae, salsa, blues, pop and Rock & Roll; with a lot of COLOMBIAN touch, and with the mix of letters about our own daily experiences, it gives fun spaces to whom heard the songs and to the group; giving as a result a music “sancocho” with a lot of flavor.

The band is made up by three musicians since 2008 that have been working on other projects during the past years, specially playing cover at some Medellin bars. They are: Juan Esteban Arango as the singer, Miguel Arango as the drummer and Lucas Alvarez on the keyboards.

At the moment the band is on the pre-production for the second album with the hand of Sound Node. Drums, percussion and bass were recorded in Medellin, keyboards in Bogota and guitars and voice in London.

The band is comprised of seventeen professional musicians whose cumulative experience totals over five hundred years. Our members have worked with an exhaustive list of luminaries in entertainment including Frank, the Chairman of the Board. Our purpose is to facilitate the performance of our music to a new and thirsty audience.
The band’s library features over one thousand arrangements by such notables as Tommy Newsom, Don Sebesky, Buddy Rich, Doc Severinson, Count Basie, and Sam Nestico. The list goes on and on but basically they are the best and it is our hope to present and preserve the only true original American music form and allow a new audience to discover it. Our particular type of band draws an incredible amount of attention just by its appearance.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Rose realized she had the gift of singing at a very early age.

Everyone from her mother’s side was a musician. She is the great-grand daughter of the conductor and composer CUPERTINO DE MENEZES and grand daughter of the guitar player and composer MANUEL DE MENEZES. Cupertino, also a flutist, was a band member of a “choro” group led by Callado Junior and Chiquinha Gonzaga, two of the most prominent musicians from this era. Manuel was partner – in music, adventures and “Bohemia – of the most important Brazilian composer in the early 30’s – Noel Rosa.

She started singing professionally with the OCTETO RIO ORCHESTRA performing jn the musically wealthy nightclub scene of Rio. She studied vocal technique with Graciela di Salerno, Nancy Miranda and Suely Mesquita. She also studied theory and ear training at the Instituto Vila Lobos and Centro de Instrução Musical Ian Guest.

Rose graduated with a degree in Portuguese and Literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. As a student, she was involved in various theatrical productions with the group “A QUEM INTERESSA.”

Rose Max performed extensively as a soloist with the vocal group AEQUALE under the direction of acclaimed-musical director ANDRÉ PROTÁSIO. Gaining interest and respect locally, she started working with a number of different bands. One of her best experiences was performing at “CLUBE DO SAMBA” (Samba Club) where she had a chance to learn with some of the big names of Brazilian music, such as Maestro Licinho, Neco, Antonio Carlos Tourinho, João Nogueira, and Roberto Ribeiro. She also started working as a session singer, recording jingles and background vocals, which led to the opportunity of backing up some of Brazil’ s most renowned singers.

Rose moved to Miami in October of 1993, where she has been continuing to grow and develop musically, and by keeping a constant performance schedule, she has become highly recognized in the Brazilian, Hispanic and American communities. She won the BRAZILIAN PRESS AWARD for the “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA” in 1997, 1998 and 2001.

Picadillo, a musical group from Spain, presents its debut album, Las cosas de la vida. Picadillo was formed in August, 2012, in Lavapies, Madrid, when producer Hector Aguero along with two vocalists, Rey Rodriguez and Sol Ruiz joined and began a musical experiment that launched the project. Later joined with trumpeter, percussionist, Jochi, which added the key element to the classic sound of the band. When these musicians of cuban origin came together they created a musical “Picadillo”, (originally a creole recipe), revisiting vintage cuban rhythms like the danzon, boogaloo, cha cha cha and combining with New Orleans trad Jazz, second line, soul and country. They naturally create the link from Cuba to New Orleans. With energetic live performances, they capture audiences with their son electrico. Las cosas de la vida, was recorded at DoReMix studios in Madrid and mixed and mastered by Luis Duran at PM Records en Cuba, in Nov 2012. It was independently released and completed thanks to crowdfunding

Miami Light Project is proud to celebrate the start of our 24th Contemporary Performance Series with an exclusive engagement of the world renowned British band the Tiger Lillies, November 1-2, 2013 at the Light Box at Goldman Warehouse.

The Tiger Lillies defy any singular description and operate within their own eccentric definitions. Founded in 1989, the Tiger Lillies are Martyn Jacques (angel-voiced, accordion playing front man and song writer), Adrian Stout (upright Bass and toy sheep) and Adrian Huge (child’s drum kit and assorted plastic and wooden objects). Treading a fine line between Brecht/Weill opera, English music hall, Gypsy folk and even left-bank Parisian buskers, the Tiger Lillies are like no other band around and they tour the world, wowing audiences with their simply delicious, devilish music.

One moment their blasphemous, perverse irreverence shocks (often leaving their audience in uncontrollable fits of laughter), the next they still the air with beautiful ballads of death, cruelty or depravity. They move between punk-like clown ditties to deadly serious storytellers in the blink of an eye. No fear of taboos, their subject matter includes rape, crucifixion, bestiality, murder or prostitution, more often than not with a hidden morality at the root of each song. Jacques has a wonderfully clear vision of the world’s inequality, if seen from an all too blood shot eye.

As a result, they captivate with every word and timeless sound they make. For fans (they have a cult following throughout many cities of the world) there is also the fun of being part of something that is so shocking, so naughty! The band pushes all limits; wanting to know how close to damnation each of us is willing to go. And if damnation is on the cards, the Tiger Lillies are taking the express elevator down and from listening to their gorgeous music; they appear to love every second of the ride!

Tired of Jazz Festivals that aren’t really Jazz Festivals? Well look no more!
The Miami Beach Jazz Festival is Jazz, pure Jazz! Scheduled for Saturday, November 16th at the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre, the event promises to be a line-up of quality Jazz performances that will capture the excitement of fans throughout South Florida and beyond including headliner Michelle Coltrane, vocalist and daughter of jazz legends John and Alice Coltrane.
“There are many music festivals that call themselves ‘Jazz’ events, but are all too often watered down with other types of music” says event founder and producer, Carmen J. Cartiglia. “The Miami Beach Jazz Festival will be going back to the basics and will showcase performances from exceptional true jazz artists.”

Michelle Coltrane represents a strong legacy of performers in the Jazz World. The only daughter of John and ‘Alice Coltrane, her first CD was released in 1994. “I Think Of You” a collaboration with musician and composer Scott Hiltzik produced a blend of classic and contemporary Jazz. “The Jazz Times” noted the recording to be deeply rooted in the Jazz tradition and was well received including winning a YES award. Her current project is in collaboration with guitarist Shea Welsh (performing with Michelle at the Festival), who is also the musical director for her band. Michelle and Shea are writing new material, and arranging new and classic standards to create the bands unique modern/retro sound.

The announced addition of headliner Michelle Coltrane rounds out a full slate of true jazz performances. Also appearing on the bill will be the duo of Brazilian jazz guitarist Joe Carter and flautist Ali Ryerson; award winning jazz pianist Markus Gottschlich; violinist Mads Tolling; and the South Florida Jazz Orchestra featuring Special Guest performers including Michelle Coltrane and Ed
Calle.

From now through October 15th, student musicians and bands from all over South Florida will be able to apply for a competition that could lead them to be chosen as the opening act for the Festival. Applications are available at the website: www.miamibeachjazz.com. Each student who enters will be given a ticket to the Festival as well as a free pass to the series of three master classes being taught by some of the featured artists at the Betsy Hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach during the week prior to the Festival.

“We’re going ‘Old School’ for this event and bringing the people of South Florida a true Jazz event that they can be proud of!” Mr. Cartiglia goes on to say that “this is the start of an annual Jazz festival that will grow with each year and establish Miami Beach as the home for ‘True Jazz’ and the revival Jazz is enjoying.”

The Festival is being sponsored by Atlantic Broadband, The Road Less Traveled: Project Ecuador, Bloomingdale’s, ArtMiami.TV and Cynthia & Lance Geller.

Welcome Miami Baby Boomers to Miami Disco Fever the event that will take you back to the glory years of Miami, Florida. The magical year’s of the 70’s 80’s and 90’s. The Miami Magic began in the early 70’s with the explosion of the world wide movement of the Miami Sound with the first disco record ever recorded “Rock Your Baby” by George Mc Crae at a Hialeah recording studio named TK Records. Remember Jimmy Bo Horne? With the disco mega hit “Dance Across The Floor” or what about the Hialeah High student named Harry Casey who started a band called KC and The Sunshine Band. What about the disco classic “Ring My Bell” by Anita Ward. Ray Martinez “If There’s Love” how many dance floors fill with that song. Yes the list goes on. Get the picture. Hialeah was a sleepy town during the 70’s while at the south end of the city a young man started a revolution in the music business. His name was Mr. Henry Stone he is known as the man who founded the “Miami Sound”. With over 25 million records sold during the 70s TK Records based out of Hialeah started the world -wide music movement that placed Miami on the international map of entertainment.

MUSIC BY:
Benji Candelario
Benji Candelario has sustained his presences as one of the foremost DJ/Producer’s ever to grace the scene. Spanning all genres of club music, his signature sound captures the essence of the culturally vibrant New York club scene, distinguishing him as a quintessential DJ, and visionary producer/musician. Developing an impeccable reputation internationally with some of biggest names in the industry, his productions have had more aliases than Smith and Jones, … Station Q, Bass Hit, The Element, Swing 52, New Hippie Movement, and Central Park. But whatever the name, Candelario’s fans can always tell who’s behind that trademark beat chugging, bass line driven, anthem praising, dance floor dominating sound that has been acclaimed timeless by many of his peers.

His latest venture Transitori Music, an extension of his production company 2nd color Entertainment, is Candelario’s own digital imprint. His mission is to release forward-thinking music from a diverse roster of up and coming artist. Rather than concentrating on a specific style, Candelario aims to have a platform where he can truly express creative freedom through a varied selection of music. So far it has proven true, having licensed several of his past releases to the likes of Ministry of Sound and several other European and Japanese labels.

Though his many productions have been praised around the world, Benji is always quick to point out his roots. He is a DJ foremost that produces records and not a producer that now DJs. He is in his element playing the hottest clubs (from the dark, underground spots to the big rooms) in Ibiza, Greece, UK, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Canada and the U.S.

Without compromising his expansive knowledge and exquisite taste, his style remains fun and accessible. When Benji plays he takes care to bring his listeners with him on his musical journey and makes sure they stay with him the whole party through. It has always been important to him that people understand and enjoy his unique musical point of view, making him a favorite with promoters and club goers alike.

His first release was in 2001 on Yoruba Records with a remix of Erro’s ‘Change For Me.’ The record’s great success came from its unique fusion of broken beat and soul-drenched deep house, earning it future classic status. From that point on, he had been involved in numerous projects such as Open Aire, which was featured earlier this year on the popular BBC television drama, ‘The Syndicate.’ Additionally, Mikkel has set forth plans to launch his label BTWN SPKRS to serve as an outlet for music producers alike. Rent parties were held frequently during the 1920s in Harlem, New York and the Southern States. It is a social occasion where tenants hire a musician or band to play and pass the hat to raise money to pay their rent, originating in Harlem during the 1920s. Rent parties played a major role in the development of jazz and blues music. We won’t be passing the hat around, but join us for a night of some prohibition era vibes and great live jazz music.

Since their inception in 1999, the traditional Cuban Son ensemble Conjunto Progreso, has taken audiences back in time to the nostalgic era of early Cuban popular music. Led by Johnny Aguiló, son of Cuban trumpet legend and band leader Rolando “El Ruso” Aguiló, Conjunto Progreso has grown from a quartet, to its recent incarnation of eight members. In 2004, Conjunto Progreso released its long awaited debut album titled Masters of Cuban Son, featuring an array of songs by legendary Cuban composers Nico Saquito, Miguel Matamoros, and Compay Segundo. The album was honored by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences with a 2006 Grammy Award Nomination under the category of Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album. www.facebook.com/conjuntoprogreso

PALO! is a favorite among South Florida’s live music devotees and in 2012 was named Miami New Times’ BEST BAND in the Readers’ Choice Awards. The group plays a style of extremely danceable music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk”. Their appeal lies in their unmatched musical energy, catchy original songs, and amazing display of impromptu virtuosity. A mix of Latin and Urban sounds gives PALO! their unique, infectious style. Formed in 2003, when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment, PALO! combines Cuban music with funk beats. PALO has performed for packed houses at New York’s legendary SOB’s, Ryles Jazz Club and Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston, and the Chicago Folk and Roots Festival. The band often appears at venues throughout South Florida. Their first CD, “This Is Afro-Cuban Funk” is available on gopalo.com as well as in music stores, on iTunes and other digital stores. www.GoPalo.com

GWAR (popularly thought to be an acronym for God What an Awful Racket, despite the band’s protests to the contrary) are thrash metal’s answer to the more mainstream satire of Spinal Tap. Gory, sexually perverse, and scatological in the extreme, GWAR claimed to consist of all-powerful interplanetary warriors, descended from aliens stranded in Antarctica and initially created from the lowest filth in the universe, who came to Earth to sexually enslave and/or slaughter the human race. The group quickly established a unique identity as the members performed in bizarre costumes made of latex and papier-mâché, while the stage show itself featured fake pagan rituals, corpses spewing washable bodily fluids on the audience, and sometimes a mechanical giant maggot. GWAR’s live performances are literally the most mind-blowing act you will see today!

The much loved all-girl pop pioneers The Go-Go’s will bring beauty, the beat and beyond to the Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, September 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale on Sunday, July 28.

From their halcyon days as America’s sweethearts to their current status as superstars who pioneered a genre, The Go-Go’s have enjoyed an amazing three-decade reign as high pop priestesses. The internationally-loved hitmakers helped cement the foundation of the early ‘80s pop-rock sound without the aid of outside composers, session players or, most importantly, creative compromise. From their very first show, the group sang and played their own songs, offering five feisty role models for a generation of ready-to-rock girls and good, hooky fun for pop-loving guys.

For The Go-Go’s, their story truly is a punk version of the American Dream. The Go-Go’s debuted in May of 1978, a time when there were other all-female bands, but ones orchestrated by men such as Phil Spector, Kim Fowley or Sonny Bono. The band was conceived in the very same gritty glitter of the rough Los Angeles scene that also birthed X, The Germs, and The Weirdos. By ’79, the Go-Go’s were beating their path to stardom on their own terms. They played every cool club and party in Los Angeles and released an early version of “We Got the Beat” through the quirky Stiff Records in the UK.

By 1981, the band was signed to upstart new wave haven IRS records with Beauty and The Beat, and the infectious debut U.S. single, “Our Lips Are Sealed,” was released. The double-platinum Beauty and The Beat reached #1 and was followed-up by Vacation in ‘82 and Talk Show in ’84. During those years, hits like “Vacation,” “Head Over Heels” and “Turn to You” dominated the airwaves and, today, continue to live on in countless compilations, movie soundtracks, remakes and television commercials.

For 15 years, the Afro Roots World Music Festival has celebrated the evolution of African culture by featuring some of the best performers from all over the Caribbean, the Americas and African countries such as Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali and The Republic of Congo. This global connection through the universal language of music has helped the festival evolve into one of Miami’s most culturally diverse events. The festival’s signature youth program,
“Let The Children Have Music” is a FREE program providing live music, dance demonstrations, show-and-tell style presentations by festival artists and art projects for children ages 3 to 12.

The Little Haiti Cultural Center will be the  host location to this year’s celebration Saturday, August 3, 2013. To commemorate the festival’s 15th anniversary, CAC wants to produce an extra special "Let The Children have Music" program and invite a special musical guest.

Your donation will support CAC’s efforts to produce a special "Let The Children have Music" program that’s not only fun for kids of all-ages, but showcases the diverse cultural roots that exist in their community. It is our sincere desire to bring world culture to Miami, and your contribution will aid our effort in continuing to do so.

The evening will feature various showcases produced for this special anniversary year. Highlights include the Afro Polyphonic World Orchestra, a world music orchestra that collaborates with invited guests artists from around the globe. Itawe (pronounced E tah wi), lead singer of Locos Por Juana will be performing songs from his new reggae solo project. The Antilles Music Ensemble, representing the early days of Caribbean dance music from 1900  1950 and all points in between. This year the festival will also present two West African artists including master percussionist and founder of UC Berkeley’s African Music and Dance Ensemble,  CK Ladzekpo from Ghana, and Master Balafonist and Griot, Ibrahima Dioubate from Guinea. Also representing Africa and collaborating with CK Ladzepko is the all women percussion and dance troupe Venus Rising. From Colombia we have Grupo Barrio Abajo performing their blend of Afro Colombian music from both coasts. Representing Brazil is the  Unidos de Miami Samba School directed by Paulo Gualano. Finally, returning to the festival for a second year in a row is Cuban Son duo Cortadito, which will be expanding to a quintet for this year’s special performance.

Florida Supercon on Friday, July 5, 2013.  Wow this show just keeps growing and growing and getting better each year.  There were so many people in great costume, it just adds to the over all experience.  I just love watching the Florida Super Championship Wrestling, so much fun seeing different characters in the wrestling ring from Power Rangers to the Joker, so fun.  The Cupcake Burlesque show was awesome as always, these girls always do a fabulous show and this one was comic themed.

Other activities are camping, canoeing, movies, comedy shows, live art installations, guest speakers, and seed stomping to improve the park grounds post Festival. Attendees can browse the vendor site, featuring fresh fruit markets and exotic eco-vendors such as organic soap makers, alternative energy gadgets, and more. To satisfy mid-Festival cravings, all of Miami’s famed food trucks will be on Festival grounds serving some of the community’s favorite treats.

With the goal of raising environmental awareness and promoting companies that have green initiatives, the musicians will contribute to the Festival’s mission through their support of the Festival and by being friends of nature.

Jessica Gross, FON FEST comedian booker, says “I wanted to bring some of the best established as well as up-and-coming talent in Stand-Up Comedy to our neighborhood. Unlike other festivals around the country, Miami was lacking in festivals that integrated music, cinema, and comedy – until now. Many of the comedians have performed at other festivals and now we can introduce Miami to these amazing talents at FON FEST.”

Miami native Karina Iglesias takes center stage at Unity on the Bay to perform her usual boleros, jazzy-pop style of hip-hop and American classics on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 8:00 pm. Iglesias, as seen on NBC’s #1 hit TV show ‘The Voice’, performs with Nu-Thang and special guest artist Monique Abbadie. Tickets on sale at www.unityonthebay.org. Ticketed pre-party reception starts at 7pm.

“This concert is my own spin on top popular music. It’s my personal vocal touch on a mix of jazz, pop, and blues songs along with some new, original material,” said Iglesias, songwriter and singer. This is Iglesias’s first concert since leaving ‘The Voice’.

In 2013, Iglesias was a top 16 contestant on NBC’s #1 hit TV show ‘The Voice’. She was originally a member of Team Adam, after a two-chair audition that included Blake Shelton, and was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World”, which became a YouTube sensation.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, the saucy, soultress songwriter is a long-time South Florida vocal favorite. The Miami Dolphins hired her through Emilio Estefan to sing the anthem at all home games, as part of the ensemble Dolphin Voices, in 2009. She was featured on Univision’s Mira Quien Baila and has taken the stage with numerous Latin artists.

Adam Levine, ‘The Voice’ coach said after Iglesias audition: “I felt like for the first time on the show, that possibly, that towards the end, that the light fixtures were just gonna’ explode, because [she is] a great singer and [she] really deserves to be here, so congratulations.”

Special guest artist Monique Abbadie takes the stage with Iglesias and the Nu-Thang at the concert. Abbadie is a pop artist who has performed at the legendary House of Blues Los Angeles, Planet Hollywood Las Vegas and Miami’s Gusman Center, among many others places. She has also been on NBCs hit show ‘The Voice’ where she recently participated on Team Shakira.

Concert tickets are $25. Meet Iglesias in a private pre-party reception that starts at 7pm. Tickets for the reception and concert are $50. Tickets can be purchased at www.unityonthebay.org or at Unity on the Bay’s The Source Bookstore, 411 NE 21st Street, Miami, FL 33137.

Unity on the Bay is a dynamic trans-denominational spiritual community dedicated to the transformation of ourselves and the world. Its values include acceptance, love, service, and gratitude.
