The City of Miami Beach is reaching the century mark, and to celebrate this iconic town of neighborhoods and international destinations, Orchestra Miami will hold a free traditional “pops” style concert on Sunday, February 8, at 4:00 pm in Collins Park, adjacent to the Bass Museum on Collins Avenue. The concert, from one of South Florida’s leading symphonic musical ensembles, will take the audience on a musical tour through highlights of Miami Beach’s history. This is a family-friendly event ideal for picnics, with open grass seating, and is presented by the LeRoy Schecter Foundation, with major sponsors including the Collins Park Neighborhood Association, Collins Park Art Fund at the Miami Foundation, the Betsy Hotel and additional support provided by the Bass Museum of Art.

The concert will begin with “An Outdoor Overture” by Aaron Copland. It continues with “The Orange Blossom Special” (arr. Wendel) and “The Original Ragtime Band, ” a salute to Ragtime Music (arr. Wendel) and the Roaring Twenties, when the Art Deco era of Miami Beach began. Next up will be “The Armed Forces March,” a salute to Miami Beach’s contributions to the war effort in the 1940s, and “Swing, Ludwig, Swing,” a salute to the Big Band Era. It will conclude with “Andalucia Suite” by Ernesto Lecuona (arr. Jenkins), celebrating the contributions of Miami’s Cuban immigrants, and a medley from the musical “La Cage aux Folles” by Jerry Herman (arr Wendel), honoring the vibrant gay community of South Beach.

This is a free concert with open grass seating, and audience members are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnics. Collins Park is located at 2100 Collins Avenue, on Miami Beach, with valet parking available on the day of the concert and self-parking available at nearby metered surface lots and garages. At one end is the Bass Museum’s new facility, and at the other end, the beach and the ocean. For more information about the concert visit www.OrchestraMiami.org.

Orchestra Miami is a unique, professional ensemble based in Miami-Dade County. Now in their 8th season, Orchestra Miami exists to build community and educate through music. Their goal is to bring high-quality classical symphonic music to every person in Miami-Dade County, regardless of economic circumstance. Their signature programs include annual free Outdoor Concerts, free Family Concerts and a collaboration with the Miami-Dade County Public School’s Cultural Passport program. “The 27 Club” or “Club 27” is the colloquial name given to a group of influential rock musicians that died at the young age of 27. There are a few “members” who are always listed in “27 Club” groupings – such as Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain, and more recently Amy Winehouse – while other musicians who were 27 at the time of their death are included sporadically, depending on who has composed the list (another term for this club-that-nobody-wants-to join is the Forever 27 club).Though the official causes of death for these famous people vary between the different musicians – from suicide to overdoses on sleeping pills to, yes, choking to death on vomit – drug and alcohol abuse is often cited as a primary cause behind many of these deaths. Everyone on this list will never turn 28 – they will be forever 27.

The Kiwanis of Little Havana is set to host the 33rd Annual Miss Carnaval Miami 2015 pageant to determine the next female ambassador of Carnaval Miami, with support from Diet Coke, AT&T and BB&T. As the kick-off to the Carnaval Miami 2015 season, young women between the ages 16-25 will showcase their talent, beauty, poise and elegance with the opportunity to receive $2,500 in college scholarship funds, an automatic entry to the Miss Florida USA pageant and other prizes.

In the husband and wife duo, West meets East in music for piano and computers.
Composer/pianist Chen-Hui Jen and composer/computer musician Jacob David Sudol met in grad school at UC San Diego where they began collaborating on projects that combine Eastern and Western musical idioms quickly.
“Since we are both composers, we select and interpret works based on our ears, tastes, as well as our deeper understanding on other composers’  works.  Our thoughts also incorporate  western and asian philosophies and aesthetics.  This is reflected in our programming choices.  Following our multi-cultural backgrounds and diverse experiences, we’re also very open-minded to try different things and other works that many other performers wouldn’t dare to combine in a program or perform,“ say Sudol and Chen about forming their Jen/Sudol Duo in 2010.

To date, they have performed 16 concerts, presenting both newly composed repertoire and ‘classic’ music for piano and electronics in cities such as San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, and Taipei.  

“….when I’m working I forget that Jacob’s my husband.  I guess being intimate makes our collaboration easier, because we both want to make good music,” says Jen. Sudol adds: “we don’t really need to worry about manners when rehearsing because we both know that we can’t offend or upset each other while rehearsing.” Today’s concert is indeed about quality and variety. The program is designed to highlight the diversity and compelling imaginary and poetic worlds that result from combining rich possibilities of electronic music with the acoustic piano.  You will hear synthetics sounds merging with the acoustic piano, the piano sonorities combined with digitally retuned pianos for the purpose of creating magical resonances and echoes slowly catching up with their original acoustic sound. Colorful instrumental resonances will present a seamless marriage between the acoustic and electronic sonorities in a way that could never happen with just acoustic instruments or just electronic technologies.

The program will feature music from the Americas, Europe and Asia, namely, the works by M. Davidovsky, B. Jacobs, J.D. Sudol, K. Y. Chong and G. F. Haas.

It’s the 21st century, and time to re-invent opera, but in a way that’s more fun, less pretentious, and a little messed up.

MelanchoLalaland™—with music by composer and Florida Atlantic University professor Joey Bargsten and libretto by writer Thea Zimmer—accomplishes this by fusing traditional elements of opera, theater, and dance with new and experimental visual media forms, all set to an electronic music score. MelanchoLalaland™ tells the dark tragi-comic story of three artist/engineers who design mind-altering experiences, enhanced by self-pleasuring technologies and a variety of brain chemicals. They deal with disgruntled employees, corporate takeovers, dissatisfied girlfriends, and cheesy space-aliens.

A PROPER MARRIAGE

Concept / Choreography: Pioneer Winter

A Proper Marriage is a speculative piece that comments on the perceived co-dependence of music and movement, especially live music with dance–underlying properties of a dancer’s dependence on composition, and the musician’s own foresight to create action from sound. Sheet music is attached to the backs of dancers, and the musicians follow the dancer in order to read the music and maintain the melody. Irony rests in the notion that if the dancer moves too quickly and the musician cannot keep up, the music will falter and the dancer’s own rhythm will stop.

Pioneer Winter is a Miami-native choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker of Pioneer Winter / Collective. He is co-director of RIFT Blackbox and the curator of transmedia performances for FilmGate Interactive Media Conference. Winter also directs Project LEAP (Living Equality through Arts and Performance), a free dance and creative communication program for LGBTQ teens that focuses on teaching how to use the arts for activism and social change. He was recently awarded the 2014-2015 Miami Choreographer’s Fellowship, and is on faculty of the FIU Honors College. His project Grass Stains was also recently awarded a Knight Arts Challenge Grant.

The Revivalists

Hailing from Miami, JUke is a new breed of Post-blues and the brainchild of singer/songwriter/harmonica whiz, Eric Garcia, who was dissatisfied with most dated, non-threatening traditional blues. Eric felt the need to bring the angst and power back into the type of music that seemed to lose some of it’s relevance and impact.

Teaming up with guitar phenom and singer, Evan Lamb, was the catapult that made JUke go and realize Eric’s vision.

Once again, Life Is Art is happy to join with Yo Miami for their Average Joe Art Sale New Years’ ResYolution Edition. Yo Miami has dedicated 10% of sales to be donated to Life Is Art! Plus, for this special edition, we have the Mega Art Auction. And, we will be celebrating Annette’s BIG Birthday! It’s a new year and Yo Miami is ready to put our money where our mouth is again.

The whole idea behind these Average Joe sales was to make it possible for everyday people to be able to support their local artists by presenting art work in a laid back environment at affordable prices.

In the interest of showing you how dedicated we are to supporting the local art scene, this month we’re donating a portion of all sales to an organization that has been doing just that for way longer than we have, Life Is Art, Inc.

Big Night In Little Haiti at Little Haiti Cultural Center on Friday, December 19, 2014. This month thay had Gabel, one of the premier Haitian bands. They began with a bang in 2006 when prestigious Kompa Magazine named the young Haitian group “New Band of the Year”.  Their fourth studio album Anyen Pa Etenèl was released earlier this year and they believe it to be their best yet.  The group has nine members; Katalog on vocals, Flav on vocals, Bob Doll as Maestro and guitar, Ray as the rhythm guitarist, T-Pachou on keyboards, DJ Dodo on bass, Cha Cha on percussionist and gong, Jay Lay Back on congas and tambourine, and Becken on drums.

Wow what a wonderful evening, the music was amazing and a awesome crowd everyone dancing and have a wonderful time.  Love this event…Big Night In Little Haiti is every third Friday, if you have not been you really should go.

The PhanArt Poster and Pin Exhibition: Miami, featuring a wide variety of artists who draw inspiration from the music of Phish, will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33132. This one of a kind art show, created and produced by Pete Mason, will be held on the third day of Phish’s four night stand at Miami’s American Airlines Arena, only a 5 block walk from the Arsht Center.

The lineup announced for the PhanArt Poster and Pin Exhibition: Miami represents a wide array of artists from among the Phish art community. Longtime Phish artists Ryan Kerrigan, TRiPP, Isadora Bullock, Michael Boyer, StuPINdous Creations, Pompeii Prints and Fred Sutter are regular exhibitors at PhanArt shows and fans can expect to find a large portfolio from each artist of current and past art.

Pin makers and designers MYFE. Designs, Party Time Pins, Noah Phence, Pin me Down, Cactusbomb, Pinsanity Designs, and Ant Pharms Pins will feature their ever-popular pin series and designs, as well as other items made specifically for the Miami shows.

First time exhibitors to the PhanArt Poster and Pin Exhibition include Sweet Melis, Otto Art, Brooke Appelman, Brian Bojo’s Phifty-Two Weeks, Golden Road Gallery, Jampanties, Ebbleberry Designs, Super Rad Cape Co, Highly Concerned Enterprises, Brendan Nicolan and The Shakedown Shop. Each of these exhibitors brings something new to the show, be it posters, clothing, underwear, a year-long art project, children’s clothing and much more.

A musical performance from San Francisco-based pianist Holly Bowling will take place throughout the art show, with performances on the hour from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The sets will feature Phish songs arranged for solo piano and several “jam transcriptions”, including a complete rendition of the ‘Tahoe Tweezer’ during the final hour, beginning at 4 pm. Non-profits benefitting from the PhanArt show include The Mockingbird Foundation, which has awarded grants for music education totaling more than $800,000 over the past 15 years. PhanArt has raised, through a book and website created to showcase the art made by Phish fans, over $18,000 for The Mockingbird Foundation since 2009.

Phish Art shows have been held since 2003 with great success. Unique posters, pins, shirts, stickers and much more are made for Phish shows, making the PhanArt Poster and Pin Exhibition: Miami, a must-attend event during Phish tour. Produced by Pete Mason, founder of PhanArt and author of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish, these PhanArt exhibitions have been held in Atlantic City, Chicago and Las Vegas over the past 14 months and represent a continued effort to promote and exhibit original and unique concert art from a wide variety of artists. The eclectic artists featured at this event show the broad scope of Phish related art and capture the inspiration of the band in their art. Phish’s creative fan base makes amazing art inspired by the band, their music and the locales they play.

In keeping with the great tradition and success of past art shows, the PhanArt Poster and Pin Exhibition: Miami, will offer free entry to all patrons and tubes available for purchase. Special edition works only available at the show can be viewed on PhanArt.net and acquired exclusively at the PhanArt show.

Alex Ridha – better known to the world as Boys Noize – has been making electronic music and working as a DJ for over half of his life.
He established himself as one of the world’s preeminent wizards behind the decks, having played the world’s biggest stages alongside the biggest names in dance music.
His sets are equally uplifting, not only technically but also as a showman, leaving unforgettable experiences for the witnesses. One of the reasons why the Rolling Stone voted Boys Noize amongst the Top10 `DJs who rule the earth` in 2012.

As a recording artist and producer, Ridha has created his own sound, and pioneered his own brand, amassing a formidable body of work in the process.
He has released three albums (2007’s Oi Oi Oi , 2009’s Power and 2012´s Out Of The Black) and countless singles as Boys Noize, as well as doing profoundly influential work as a remixer and producer for everyone from Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Feist, David Lynch to Jarvis Cocker, Santigold, Scissor Sisters and Chilly Gonzales.

He has collaborated with Snoop Dogg, genius film maker Mr. Oizo (on a project called Handbraekes), Erol Alkan, and most recently Skrillex (under the moniker of Dog Blood) and won Beatport’s ‘Best Electronic Act’ 3 years in a row.

Ridha is also the heart of Boysnoize Records, the label that he started back in 2005. Founded originally as a means to get his own music out into the world, Boysnoize Rec.—and it’s sub-label, BNR Trax—is now home to more than a dozen artists (including up-and-comers like 18-year old SCNTST, Le1f, Spank Rock, Strip Steve, Peaches and Siriusmo) and responsible for over 100 releases while remaining fully independent.
“I don´t compromise when it comes to music,” says Ridha. “I do what I think is cool and what I like and not what the market wants or people may expect. Maintaining artistic freedom has always been the most important thing to me — for my own music and for anyone on my label”

Despite his ever-expanding label roster and the increased demand for his time as a producer and remixer, Ridha’s primary loves continue to be the twin pursuits of making and performing music.
Following the release of his third long-player Out Of The Black in late 2012, he presented the first Boys Noize ‘Live’ show to the masses.
“I really wanted to give people a concert where I perform my music only. It´s not that I don´t like DJing anymore, I´m a DJ to the bone and will always be. But playing my tracks live and putting on a completely new show was something I wanted to do for a long time. It´s different and fresh and that is what I love.”

Miami Boheme nights, now scheduled every Friday is inspired by the documentary film written and directed by Joe Cardona. Joe, who will be hosting the event tomorrow is a documentary filmmaker and a writer for the Miami Herald. He coined the term ” miami boheme” to describe a genre of music he saw developing in Miami. Below, is a brief summary of the film:

Miami Boheme: An American Musical Journey is an hour-long PBS documentary about Miami’s original Latin-fusion bands and the cutting-edge scene surrounding them. The film takes viewers to clubs where the beats of bands such as Spam Allstars, Locos Por Juana, Suénalo, PALO!, Elastic Bond, and Afrobeta getthe room dancing. The film is a bilingual mash up of rhythms and cultures. It is a one-hour jam session like no other: a fusion of sights, sounds, and ideas that meld together to form the fabric of America’s most dynamic city, Miami.

As part of the The Miami Boheme nights, Joe will host each night by engaging in dialogue with the performers, and by providing commentary to the audience. Joe will also be introducing new bands that have never been previously classified as “miami boheme” into the mix.

Straight Out the Jungle, Mike Gee (born Michael Small; Harlem, NY), DJ Sammy B (born Sammy Burwell; Harlem, NY), and Baby Bam (born Nathaniel Hall; Brooklyn, NY) came together as the Jungle Brothers in the mid-’80s and began their recording career at the dance label Idler. The result of the sessions, Straight Out the Jungle, was released in early 1988. The album’s Afrocentric slant gained the Jungle Brothers entry into the Native Tongue Posse, a loose collective formed by hip-hop legend Afrikaa Bambaataa, including Queen Latifah (and, later, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest). The album’s most far-out cut was “I’ll House You,” a collaboration with house producer Todd Terry and an early experiment in what later became known as hip-house. The single “I’ll House You,” added to the album in 1989, is known for being the first hip-house record recorded outside of the Chicago scene, which was a club hit that drastically changed the way the hip-hop and dance-music industries worked. Their first album, Straight Out the Jungle, was released on an independent record label (Warlock). In spite of the commercial failure of Straight Out the Jungle, Warner Bros. Records soon signed the group and released Done By the Forces of Nature in November 1989. Orchestra Miami will present a fun-filled Family Concert, featuring a performance of The Purple Palace, composed by Bruce Adolphe with the story written by Louise Gikow. The 28-piece orchestra will be led by Orchestra Miami Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi along with a special guest narrator. This delightful program will last approximately 50 minutes and is perfect for children ages 3 and up.

The Purple Palace tells the comic but touching tale of the land of Chromatica, where everything is light and color. Queen Red and King Blue have a child, Princess Purple. When she becomes queen, she banishes all colors but purple. This leads to nothing but trouble for her, and she eventually comes to understand her mistake. She invites all the banished colors to return, and Chromatica is once again vibrant and full of color. Beyond its affirmative social message for children- emphasizing the value of diversity and democracy- the story is rich in visual images that are clearly portrayed in the music. Each color has a theme, and as the plot unfolds, orchestral colors are varied and mixed just as an artist would use colors to illustrate the story in a book.

The concert will be on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 4:00 PM at Pinecrest Gardens’ Banyan Bowl, located at 11000 SW 57 Avenue, Pinecrest, FL 33156. Tickets are $12 for Adults and $8 for children, and Family Packs (2 Adults & 2 Children) are available for $30. Children 2 and younger admitted free of charge with lap seating only. Orchestra Miami is proud to continue its tradition of bringing high quality family and educational programs to the public with Time Flies, a magical musical exploration of evolution based on the award winning children’s book by Eric Rohmann.

Time Flies is the story of a little bird who is caught in a dinosaur exhibit at a natural history museum. The story is told through the evocative music of Bruce Adolphe and lush illustrations of Mr. Rohmann. Fourteen soloists from Orchestra Miami will perform with Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi conducting. The performance will be accompanied by projected images from Mr. Rohmann’s book.

In addition to enjoying Time Flies, children and their families will be introduced to each instrument through music and pictures. The performance lasts approximately 45-50 minutes and is perfect for children ages 3 and up.

As a celebration of the cultural diversity of the city and the musical richness that exists around the world, South Florida Friends of Classical Music presents the 3rd Edition of the Miami Music Festival from Around the World.

The South Florida Friends of Classical Music, announces the third edition of “Miami Music Festival from Around the World” (formerly known as Miami World Music Festival) which will take place from October, 24 to 26, in the Wertheim Center for the Performing Arts of the Florida International University (FIU).

The 2014 Festival, under its new name, will embark on an international sonic adventure. Four shows in which music lovers will come together to enjoy a wide scope of musical expressions ranging from well-known opera arias to the vibrant African rhythms and explosive piano duels.

This year the festival, under the artistic direction of Dr. Adolfo Vidal, has brought together both musicians of great experience and international recognition as new talents.

Opening the Festival, two virtuoso pianists Michael Linville and Adolfo Vidal, joined by percussionists of the New World Symphony, will perform Sonata for two Pianos and Percussion by the great Hungarian composer Béla Bartók and contagious avant-garde tangos by Argentina’s Astor Piazzolla.

On Saturday, after a sold-out at the last festival Venus Rising returns with a new show: “One Pulse, Many Beats” a mixture of dance, rhythms and sounds from Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil and the Middle East.

On Sunday a double round of concerts begins with a spectacular journey through the world of opera. “Women in Opera” features five sopranos and mezzo-sopranos singing ravishing duos, trios, recognized arias.

The festival closes with the “Monster Piano Explosion,” a marathon of solos, four-hand throw-downs, two pianos duels and other surprises that will blow your senses, with 20 accomplished pianists from the South of Florida.

All proceeds from the Miami World Music Festival will be benefit educational programs for young by South Florida Friends of Classical Music. The Festival is funded in part with the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs of Miami – Dade and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor of Miami – Dade County and the County Board of Commissioners. Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. Other grants by South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. They are back in Miami for the third time to present their annual concert par excellence! The Living Earth Show will be presenting premiere performances of New York composer Jacob Cooper’s Pasturing (Reprise) and Philadelphian Jonathan Pfeffer’s The Bell, The Ball, The Bow-tie, and the Boot, two pieces that were written for the ensemble’s 2015 collaborative production with Post:Ballet. These works utilize electric guitar, percussion, samples, and other electronic sounds to create woks that dialogue with the classical tradition and contemporary culture in equal measure.

Called “a vanguard effort of new chamber music” and “energetically provocative” by The San Francisco Examiner, “a much sought-after presence on the indie classical scene” by The San Francisco Classical Voice, and “a fully distorted perpetual motion of awesome” by I Care If You Listen, The Living Earth Show – electric guitarist Travis Andrews and percussionist Andy Meyerson – has developed a reputation as one of the most versatile and virtuosic contemporary chamber groups on the west coast. The FIU Big Band, directed by James Hacker, is the most visible artistic group at FIU. With over 25 major performances yearly it has become internationally recognized as one of the premier college jazz ensembles in the world. Invitations to the International Association for Jazz Education Convention, the Mid-West Band & Orchestra Clinic, the Wigan Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Quito Jazz Festival, and the Maceo Jazz Festival have taken this world-class group of graduate & undergraduate students beyond the realm of the ‘typical’ college band. “This big band sports an explosive sound and fluid mode of attack. They abide by a get up and go style of musicality via brisk charts and precision-oriented interplay. Wendy Pedersen is one of South Florida’s favorite performers. Her high-energy vocal delivery, with deep, convincing emotion has been impacting audiences for many years. A rising talent, Baranov has joined the prize-winning circles at 15 international guitar competitions, with his latest First Prize win at the prestigious 2013 GFA International Competition as well as First Prize at the 2013 the Francisco Tárrega Competition – and at age 30, he’s only getting started. Baranov splits his time between teaching at his alma mater, the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and is now embarking on a 50-city tour of the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Brazil, including his debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall later this month.

It is rare to hear a single instrument alone for an entire recital program unless it is piano, but solo instruments have inspired some of the most creative work from composers throughout history.  This program traces the sparks of imagination inspired by the violin.  Early caprices by Pietro Locatelli and Niccolo Paganini established a tradition for experimentation with technique and new sounds, and the modern Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino takes up that baton in his own Caprices for violin solo. New works by Dorothy Hindman, Charles Mason, and Juraj Kojs enlarge the palette considerably with electronics. 
Assistant Professor of Violin at Florida State University, violinist Benjamin Sung is also concertmaster of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, a faculty artist at the Brevard Music Center, and a roster artist for Florida Arts on Tour.  Recent concert highlights include the 2014 Brevard Music Festival, XIII Festival y Academia del Nuevo Mundo in Maracaibo, Venezuela, the Cuban premiere of the Schnittke Concerto Grosso No. 1 and the Estaciones Portenas by Piazzolla, and a TED talk for TEDx Fargo. Sung’s recent album of new American works entitled FluxFlummoxed was hailed by Fanfare Magazine as “a brilliant performance of four superb works.” www.benjaminsung.com.

Last year, Venus Rising Women’s Drum & Dance Ensemble made their debut at the Miami World Festival from around the World with their performance of an “An Afro Roots Rhythmic Journey.” The presentation earned them a standing ovation and an invitation to return this year for a repeat headline slot. This year, Venus Rising will present “One Pulse – Many Beats” on October 25, 2014 at the Florida International University’s Wertheim Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall (11200 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33199). The musical celebration begins at 7:30 p.m.

“We’re honored and thrilled to be performing once again at the Miami World Music Festival,” says troupe founder and leader Zeva Soroker. “Last year’s presentation focused on the rich traditions of our African roots. This year, we will be focusing on our group’s diversity through our continued exploration of the traditional music of Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil and the Middle East.” The Connecticut-born Soroker began playing drums in Jamaica and continued her studies in Guniea, West Africa. She is currently a drum instructor at the The Goddess Store in Hollywood.

Be prepared to swing to the incredible sax and clarinet playing of Jowee Omicil at the release of his latest CD, “Naked,” at Arts Garage in Delray Beach. Start time is 8 PM. Accompanying Jowee will be Jeff Deen, tabla, halo; Michael Piolet, drums; Ti West, tambour; Carlos Alabaci, bass; and Harold St-Louis- keys/piano

More than a mere player, Jowee is a unique and prolific composer, producer, arranger, vocalist, band leader, and music instructor who has devoted much of his time to passing down his broad knowledge of musicology to students of all ages. On May 18, 2010, Jowee had the honor of being invited to President Barack Obama’s White House to play his music for its inaugural observation of Haitian Flag Day before 150 VIP guests. With his latest release, “Naked”, Jowee offers a work that is steeped in purpose yet listener-friendly and accessible to all. In essence, that is the only way he knows to approach the making of his music.

Says Jowee: “NAKED was recorded at the Riviera area stage theater with the bare minimum. The nakedness invites the listener to participate. I see it as a jazz orgy, where everybody join in. Going forward, setting up your own standards it’s a call and response to my musical ancestors Fela Kuti, Coltrane, Dibango, Toussaint Louverture, Jean Baptiste DuSable, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, Kenny Garrett, Branford Marsalis, Kirk Franklin, Kathleen Battle, Luciano Pavarotti …what does that do to the listeners? It invites them to add their grain of salt and join the musical Fest. While listening to NAKED the people will want to jam with the record. This is the purpose of being NAKED musically.”

It’s the continuation of his previous album, “Roots & Grooves,” which was naked too. Jowee is opening a dialogue with music lovers by releasing this Album. “I’m very satisfied with the outcome of this project. May the world face my nakedness,” he says. There is a Gospel medley, performed as a duet with Harold St-Louis, dedicated to his Dad which brings Jowee to his church roots. Ti West on congas/tambour is a master of roots folklore rhythms in Haiti. He’s featured vocally and instrumentally. The eclectic sound of the halo, hapi and the tabla are all played by Jeffrey Deen, who’s an Indian-rooted musician whose performances provide joy to listeners. James Quinlan on bass, Michael Piolet on drums, and Carlos Alabaci round out the personnel, all of whom were under 20 at the time. Jowee loves to promote the younger generation who will be and who are becoming the leaders of today’s scene.

Jowee’s music is steeped in the spirituality set forth by his minister father. “I had the honor of producing music on the very last recording of Haiti’s great Pepe Bayard,” Jowee reflects. “He was dying while we were making that record, but immersing himself in music helped him live a whole lot longer. That’s the power of music… and that’s what I want to bring back. I also want people to DANCE to jazz again. Jazz was once popular music and I want the world to groove once again.”

During the performance, artist Lou-Lou Davila-Hagopian will “paint to music,” with the finished product on display at the conclusion of the performance.

This program of music for percussion and electronics is centered around Christopher Cerrone’s 22-minute work Memory Palace. Scored for found and homemade percussion instruments ranging from tuned beer bottles to 17 planks of wood and accompanied by field recordings made by the composer, Memory Palace is a beautiful exploration of the sonic possibilities of percussion. The program also includes Celestial Sphere, a work for live marimba and pre-recorded marimbas written for me last year by David Crowell, Simple Songs of Birth and Return for mbira and electronics by Nathan Davis, 21 for marimba and electronics and Stop Speaking for snare drum and electronics, both by Andy Akiho and the world premiere of House Music by Juraj Kojs.

Praised for his “excellent” and “precisely attuned” performances by the New York Times, percussionist Ian David Rosenbaum has developed a musical breadth far beyond his years. He made his Kennedy Center debut in 2009 and later that year garnered a special prize created for him at the Salzburg International Marimba Competition. Last season, Mr. Rosenbaum joined the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS Two program as only the second percussionist they have selected in their history. September is National Sickle Cell Awareness month. In honor of those who struggle with the affects of Sickle Cell Disease the Sickle Cell Natural Wellness Group (SCNWG) in association with C&I Studios is proud to present “The R.E.D. Show”. This event is in honor of Sickle Cell awareness, those living with or caring for someone with SCD as well as those who have passed away due to Sickle Cell Anemia. The R.E.D. Show is a celebration of life and natural wellness. This year marks the third annual fundraiser presented by SCNWG to promote education, healthy living, social awareness and charitable donations for those impacted by Sickle Cell Anemia.

The R.E.D show will be hosted by C&I Studios, on Saturday, September 27th from 7:00pm-1:00am; located in Fat Village home to Ft. Lauderdale’s booming Art Walk. More than 1,000 patrons come out the enjoy the arts and festivities.
