Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Heats Up Summer Fun with Exciting Summer Program for Area Youth
Four Clubs are Holding Unique Summer Programs from June-August Including Indoor and Outdoor Activities, Field Trips and More

To register, parents must come in person to the specific Club where their child(ren) will be attending the Summer Program. Mailed or faxed registration cards will not be accepted. Children will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is filled. Registration is now taking place for the 2012 Summer Program at Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, which will be held at four different locations: the Kendall Club, Northwest Club, South Beach Club and Hank Kline Club. The Summer Program allows children to learn values such as friendship, honesty and teamwork by providing a safe and secure environment in which they can express and develop such relationships.

Summer Programs are open to all boys and girls starting at age 5 up to 15 (maximum age different at each Club – please check individual Club information.) The Summer Programs at all Clubs are staffed by qualified full-time and summer staff.

During the Summer Programs, children participate in fun indoor activities such as art & crafts, game room, table games and much more. Outdoor activities include all types of organized group games, and swimming at the South Beach Club. Field trips are also offered to exciting locations and events such as the movies, bowling, Chuck E. Cheese’s, swimming field trips for older groups (Kendall Club only) and more.

A free nutritious lunch and afternoon snack will be provided daily at no additional cost, or children may bring their own lunch. At each Club, awards will be given to recognize the boys and girls who have made a positive contribution to the Summer Program.

The Miami Science Museum is gearing up for its 46th Annual Summer Camp, Summer of the Submarine! During the eight one-week camp sessions, kids aged 4-14 will enjoy engaging, unique, fun-filled experiences including ecology, robotics, engineering, technology and more. While camp activities will be specific to the session chosen each week, each class will feature science lessons, projects, experiments, and crafts, interspersed with time to explore the museum galleries, planetarium or theater shows, and a 30-minute outdoor PE time. Campers in the 2nd through 8th grade groups will also go on field trips.

Classes are offered in the following age categories (campers must be entering the grade(s) of the group in August 2012):
Pre-K (age 4 as of August 2012; must be potty-trained and able to handle all aspects of using the restroom alone)
Kindergarten
1st Grade
2nd & 3rd Grades
4th & 5th Grades
6th, 7th & 8th Grades

Instructor to camper ratio is 1:10. Lead teachers are certified teachers with over 5-10 years of teaching experience in Miami-Dade County public and private schools, who will deliver hands-on, interactive learning. Each lead teacher has experience working with children in the grade level to which they are assigned. Each class will also have a teaching aide.

Campers should bring their own lunch. Two healthy snacks will be provided each day.

The eight one-week individual sessions are as follows:
Session 1: June 18 – 22
Session 2: June 25 – 29
Session 3: July 2 – 6 (No classes on the 4th of July)
Session 4: July 9 – 13
Session 5: July 16 – 20
Session 6: July 23 – 27

Class times are 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Before Care (7:45–9 a.m.) and After Care (4–6 p.m.) are offered at an additional cost.
Students in classes involving field trips will depart from the Miami Science Museum at 9:15 a.m. and return by 3:15 p.m.

Class fees per week, unless otherwise noted on the class descriptions, are $180 for Miami Science Museum members, and $210 for non-members.

Sibling discount is 15 percent. Sibling discount applies to tuition only, and does not include Before Care and After Care costs, T-shirts, etc. Cousins, nieces, nephews or friends are ineligible for the sibling discount.

Before Care fee is $25 per child for Miami Science Museum members and $30 per child for non-members. After Care fee is $50 per child for Miami Science Museum members and $60 per child for non-members.

All fees must be paid at time of registration via cash, check (please include your driver’s license number), or credit card (if online–American Express, Discover, Visa or Mastercard are accepted). Those taking advantage of the sibling discount will pay the full amount for the registrant with highest total tuition, then deduct 15 percent from the tuition of each additional sibling. This MUST be done at the time of initial registration.

A New Summer Fun Adventure Every Week!
Miami Children’s Museum presents another summer of fun with their annual Summer Camp at the Museum located conveniently between Downtown Miami and Miami Beach from June 11 – August 31, 2012. Campers from Pre-K to 5th Grade will enjoy a fun-filled learning experience as they explore the Museum from top to bottom, while developing new interests, and making new friends. They also can experience the latest new hands on exhibit on the Olympics that is coming to the Museum this June. Campers can join camp for a week or all summer long!

Whether a MiChiMu Mate (Pre K – 2nd Grade) or part of the Castaway Crew (3rd to 5th Grade), campers can experience weekly themes relating to arts, science, culture, fitness and travel, all within a safe hands on learning environment. From Ocean Odyssey to Archeological Adventures to Music Mania to Young Thespians and more, there is a world of exciting adventures to be found each week. Camp takes place Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

MCM also offers extended care that caters to working parents and their busy schedules. Before care is from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. while After Care is from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Both are available daily at an additional per week fee.

MCM Summer Camp Registration, per week or for the whole summer, is open now. Fees are $198 per week for MCM members and $220 per week for Non-Members. Fee also includes a camp t-shirt and a Subway lunch is available for an additional fee. PLEASE NOTE: Parents are encouraged to register prior to the start of camp to avoid the $20 walk-in fee at the start of every week. Before Care is available at $25 per week while After Care is $60.

The charm and humor of this classic romantic comedy have kept Coppélia in the repertory ever since its Paris premiere in 1870. Franz loves Swanilda—except when he also has eyes for Coppélia, who turns out to be a mechanical doll!

Attendees will have the chance to participate in exciting hands-on activities such as holding a real brain, finding out if they are super tasters, discovering ways to be smarter, building their own neuron, and learning how each part of the brain works. Additionally, kids will enjoy face painting of brains and neurons, puppet shows about how the brain works, and more.

On March 2, 2012 Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) will celebrate the 108th birthday of Dr. Seuss to honor his persisting contributions as a part of Read Across America. During the celebration the Museum will be open FREE to the public from 2 p.m.-8 p.m. so that all children and families can play, learn, imagine, and create together. Hang on to your hats and watch out for the Cat as the Museum commemorates one of the world’s greatest children’s book authors.

The Grinch, Things One & Two, The Cat in the Hat, and Dr. Seuss himself will entertain guests, along with celebrity story readers (including Dave Barry and Adam Kuperstein) and much more! Seussical fun awaits all with a slew of themed games, art projects, screenings of your favorite Seuss videos and live performances of MCM’s Green Eggs and Ham as well as the Cat in the Hat. Summer Camp at Miami Seaquarium
June 11-August 17, 2012 for Campers Ages 5-18

With summer vacation upon us, parents are often looking for exciting and innovative ways to keep their children engaged in education outside the classroom. Summer Camp 2012 at Miami Seaquarium offers students from kindergarten to high school the opportunity to learn about animals, environmental awareness and animal habitats at summer camp. Summer Camp 2012 at Miami Seaquarium will run from June 11-August 17, 2012 for campers ages 5 to 18 years.

Summer activities for kids will focus on educational topics according to their grade level. These activities include lessons on the essential role that water plays on all aspects of life; the extraordinary feats of some marine animals; the devastating effects that human activity can have on the health of the planet and more. Campers also will experience at least one animal interaction and show each day. The cost of the camp includes a t-shirt, souvenir photo and a daily snack.

Curriculum for each grade level at Summer Camp 2012 at Miami Seaquarium will revolve on a three-week schedule with additional weeks optional. Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with early and late care available for an additional charge.

Elephants are said to have a very good memory. In fact, older individuals are able to lead the herd to food and water sources where they have been before. Dolphin Mall Brings in the Holiday Season with a Winter Wonderland in South Florida

Magical Snowfall Returns for its 9th Year at Dolphin Mall

Dolphin Mall invites South Florida families to experience its ninth annual Magical Snowfall. The free winter festivities in Miami begin at Dolphin Mall at the Ramblas Plaza on Wednesday, Nov. 23 and continue into the new year. There will be a snowfall at 7 p.m. daily and an additional snowfall at 9 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Beginning Monday, December 19th there will be a 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. snowfall every day until Monday, January 2, 2012. There will be no snow on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), Christmas Day (Dec. 25), New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), or New Year’s Day (January 1, 2012).

In true Dolphin Mall holiday tradition, magical wands will be distributed every night to children under 12 years of age when their parents sign up to receive the Dolphin Mall e-bulletin. The Roxy Theatre Group (RTG), a non-profit organization devoted to enriching children’s lives through the performing arts, is proud to take part in the 12th annual nationwide event, Lights On Afterschool, with both of their afterschool programs, 21st Century Community Learning Centers and The Children’s Trust Kidz on Stage. This event began as a way to promote the importance of afterschool programs and the positive effects they have on the children who attend them. Afterschool programs are formed in order to assist working families but more importantly they are to keep children in the community safe while inspiring them to learn and grow.

In the spirit of the RTG’s performing arts mission, on Thursday, October 20th, 2011, from 4PM – 6PM, at the Roxy Performing Arts Center, the organization plans to promote literacy by having their afterschool students participate in a “not-so-spooky” spooky reading of an eerie-themed one-act play entitled An Evening With Edgar Allen Poe, which includes famous works from the poet such as The Tell Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, & The Purloined Letter just to name a few . To stick with the “not-so-spooky” theme, there will be papier maché campfire logs, hearth stones and trees to complete the whole camping environment, all in the dark aided only by flashlights–the lights in “Lights On.”

“When my afterschool teachers told us we were going to be participating in this event I thought it was really cool. My favorite part is that we are going to be reading spooky plays in a spooky campfire setting,” said Annemarie Blanco, 12, student at South Miami Middle School who attends the RTG’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers afterschool program.

“The aim of the activity is to bring awareness to afterschool programs and the great strides they are making in youth academics and personal development while keeping it fun for the students,” said Charles Sothers, Theatre Director of The Roxy Theatre Group.

Kids and adults alike can explore the wonders of space for FREE at Miami Science Museum’s Fabulous First Friday events in August and September. Guests can “reach for the stars” during a free planetarium show, rooftop observatory viewing, and Activity Room for children three and older. For a nominal charge, attendees can also enjoy Miami Science Museum’s exhilarating laser shows.

During both dates, the Activity Room for children ages three and older will feature supervised activities and demonstrations, starting just before 8 p.m. Also, the Ms. Cheezious food truck will be on site, and donate 10 percent of all sales to Miami Science Museum’s Upward Bound program. One of the US Department of Education’s TRIO programs, Upward Bound helps low income, first-generation college bound students to be prepared for postsecondary study, and to graduate college with a bachelor’s degree in science, math, and technology related fields.

Current exhibitions at the Museum, viewable daily from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., include Earth From Space: The Magic Planet, Energy Tracker, Heart Smart, The Sea Lab, and Wildlife Center. Exhibitions are included in the Museum admission price.
