Registration is currently open for the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center 39th Annual Summer Arts Conservatory. This dynamic 10 week program offers youth, ages 5 – 16 the opportunity to engage in unique cultural experiences through Dance, Drama, Media, Fashion Arts, Visual Arts, Instrumental Music, & Vocal Music. The program culminates in a Fashion Show, Summer Arts Festival & Recital on August 1st , August 9th, and August 15th.

The program runs June 9th – August 15th at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, 6161 NW 22nd Ave. Doors open at 7:30am with classes from 8:30am-5pm and late pick-up until 6pm. Moving Lives of Kids (MLK Mural Project),and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami will lead a select group of Miami Northwestern’s AP art students to create a community mural on the bus stop located at NW 22nd Ave, at NW 56 Street in Liberty City. The painting will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9am-4pm. The students have been working in the Education Effect Mural program at Miami Northwestern. MLK Project hosted a art contest for the artwork that would be painted on the bus shelter. The students were to come up with a design that reflects the positive aspects of the Liberty City Community. Bernisha Fleurinor, senior student in the Medical Magnet won the contest. The mural is being funded by Commissioner Audrey M. Edmondson. Each student will receive community service learning hours, as well as an educational stipend for their contribution. MLK Mural is dedicated to the healing and inspiring power of creating public art in partnership with local youth and the support of communities. Video

Edmonson said.  “They are contributing  their talent, their love of art and their hard work and I am grateful for their participation.  The mural will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike and will help us remember that if we are strong and united we can accomplish much to make our community a more vibrant place to live.”

MLK Mural

Moving the Lives of Kids Community Mural Project (MLK Mural) is charitable organization, which focuses on the arts, youth development, and education. The artist and muralist, Kyle Holbrook, originally from the Wilkinsburg area of Pittsburgh, founded MLK Mural in 2007. His vision was to use public art as a way to reach kids over the summer months to do positive community work when they were not in school. Today as many as 5,000 youth and hundreds of professional artists have shared that same vision with Mr. Holbrook. Murals have been painted in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Florida, and outside the US in Haiti and Brazil. www.mlkmural.com.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami

Miami Habitat is a Christian ministry which builds homes and communities in partnership with low income families in need of a simple, decent place to live. Miami, FL – The Miami Marlins will kick off its Marlins Ayudan Week 2014 on Friday, February 7th with a visit to Key West for the Chas Freeman Memorial Preseason Classic, featuring Key West vs. Somerset Academy at Rex Weech Field.

The week of community engagement will continue throughout the week with visits to local schools, little leagues, senior centers and corporate partners, as well as a firehouse adoption, and several events at Marlins Park, including an RBI Clinic, a Marlins Partner School educational tour, and a Season Ticket Holder Batting Practice. Ayudan Week will culminate the following weekend with several events, including the T-Mobile Miami Marlins Winter Warm-Up at Marlins Park on Saturday, February 15th, as well as the Miami International Boat Show and the Coconut Grove Arts Festival on Sunday, February 16th.

Marlins Ayudan Week 2014 will engage the community through outreach events and one of the Marlins Foundation’s signature annual events, the Jack McKeon Marlins Celebrity Golf Classic taking place at Crandon Golf Course on February 12th. For the first time, the Marlins Celebrity Golf Classic will pay homage to former Marlins manager and 2003 World Series Champion, Jack McKeon. This January, Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) is proud to offer new Kindermusik classes, which will give local parents the opportunity to develop their child’s fundamental skills through music and movement under the guidance of a licensed educator. MCM’s Kindermusik classes offer age-appropriate activities for newborns, infants and crawlers that strengthen early parent-child bonds, foster child development understanding, and improve communication skills. MCM’s Kindermusik classes will be offered January 6th – May 23rd, 2014 and include Cuddle & Bounce, for 0 and 1 year olds, Sing & Play, for 1 and 2 year olds, and Wiggle & Grow, for 2 and 3 year olds.

Cuddle & Bounce
0 – 1 year olds
With age-appropriate activities for newborns, infants and crawlers, this parent-child music and movement class will help you strengthen those early parent-child bonds, understand your baby’s development, and heavily focus on child development and communication with your baby. You and your baby will enjoy instrument play, dance, exploration time, and together time—and you’ll get expert advice and parenting resources based on the most recent research in baby development.
 
Sing & Play
1 – 2 year olds
This new Kindermusik curriculum focuses on your child’s beginning movement, helping to build the muscles your young toddler needs to walk, run, and climb; and on vocal development, helping to nurture your child’s speaking and singing voice. With a mix of both parent-child joint activities and child-focused activities, you’ll be able to join right in on all the singing and dancing while also getting the chance to observe how your young toddler learns on his or her own.
 
Wiggle & Grow
2 – 3 year olds
This music-filled class celebrates the unique joys of your growing child. Each week your child will love singing, dancing, and playing instruments with you and her new friends and you’ll love helping her practice a wide variety of abilities such as gross and fine motor skills, turn-taking, social skills, and active listening. In class, we’ll also share tips and ideas for using music throughout the week.

Dinosaurs Invade Miami Children’s Museum

Hordes of Jurassic reptiles will be roaming around the Miami Children’s Museum (MCM) as Dino Island returns.  From June 8th, 2013 through January 5th, 2014, the dinosaurs will make their home at the Museum, 980 MacArthur Causeway on Watson Island in Miami.  MCM and Kokoro, the originators and innovators of the life like museum-quality robotic dinosaurs, will once again transform the Museum’s What’s New? Gallery into a prehistoric adventureland for the entire family. 
 
Enter MCM’s time machine and journey back 230 million years into the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods when giant dinosaurs roamed the earth.  Visitors young and old will explore 2,500 square feet of custom sets that are home for lifelike, robotic creatures, including a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Apatosaurus, Triceratops mother and baby, Maiasaura family, and a suspended Pteradon.  Children will see them walking, feeding, roaring, fighting, hatching and caring for their young, all acting and interacting with captivating realism. Families will stay clear of the volcano that erupts periodically with sound, lights and smoke, experience a murky swamp with bubbling water, and relax in a cave with a “fireside” reading nook area and much more. 

Dino Island will entertain and educate children as they learn about scale through an interactive light display, experience the magnitude of dinosaurs’ size with a life size footprint, learn the difference between meat and plant eating dinosaurs, and discover the evolution of dinosaurs into birds, their closest living descendents.  In addition to fulfilling the fascination, children and families will experience dinosaur habitats, unearth mysteries at a fun fossil dig station, and create unique pieces of art at rub stations.

Fees are $198.00 per week for MCM members and $220.00 per week for Non-Members. Fee also includes a camp t-shirt and a Subway lunch is available for an additional fee. Parents are encouraged to register prior to the start of camp to avoid the $20.00 walk-in fee at the start of every week.  Before Care is available at $25.00 per week while After Care is $60.00.

Campers must bring their own lunch and snack or purchase them from our Subway location.  MCM also offers extended care that caters to working parents and their busy schedules. Before care is from 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. while After Care is from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Both are available daily at an additional per week fee.

Now your children can spend the summer traveling through time to new and exciting adventures.  Miami Children’s Museum presents another summer of fun with their Time Travel Summer Camp at the Museum located conveniently between Downtown Miami and Miami Beach for 11 weeks.   Campers from Pre-K (3  years) through 5th Grade will enjoy a fun-filled learning experience as they travel through time from the very prehistoric beginnings to way into the future, while developing new interests, and making new friends.  And when they travel to the land of Dinosaurs, they can experience the Museum’s latest hands on attraction, Dino Island, which opens on June 8th. Campers can join camp for a week or all summer long!

Whether part of MiChiMu Travel Team 1 (Pre K – 2nd Grade) or part of Team 2 (3rd to 5th Grade), campers can experience weekly time travel adventures, all within a safe hands on learning environment. Each week we will visit a different time period through interactive stories, hands-on projects, performances, and more! Campers will participate in fun and unique activities that support literacy, health and nutrition, art making and creative thinking skills.

From Dinosaur Time Machine to Heroes and Heroines of Ancient Greece to Tea Time with the Emperor to MCM into the Future and more, there is a world of exciting adventures to be found each week.  Campers will also study Ancient Egypt, Rome and Mayan civilizations and check out the Ice Age and dive deep down into the South Florida seas.  Classes include explorations of the museum’s galleries, playgrounds, and field trips (for campers ages 7-10 only).

Students in classes involving field trips will depart from the Miami Science Museum at 9:10 a.m.

The Miami Science Museum is gearing up for its 47th Annual Summer Camp! During the eight one-week camp sessions, kids aged 4-14 will enjoy engaging, unique, fun-filled experiences including ecology, robotics, engineering, technology, field trips and more. While camp activities will be specific to the session chosen each week, each class will feature science lessons, projects, experiments, and crafts, interspersed with time to explore the museum galleries, planetarium or theater shows, and a 30-minute outdoor PE time. Campers in the 2nd through 8th grade groups will also go on field trips.
 
Classes are offered in the following age categories (campers must be entering the grade(s) of the group in August 2013):
Pre-K (age 4 as of August 2013; must be potty-trained and able to handle all aspects of using the restroom alone)
Kindergarten
1st Grade
2nd & 3rd Grades
4th & 5th Grades
6th, 7th & 8th Grades

Instructor to camper ratio is 1:10. Lead teachers are certified teachers with over 5-10 years of teaching experience in Miami-Dade County public and private schools, who will deliver hands-on, interactive learning. Each lead teacher has experience working with children in the grade level to which they are assigned. Each class will also have a teaching aide.
 
Campers should bring their own lunch. Two healthy snacks will be provided each day.
 
Miami Science Museum 2013 Summer Camp is made possible by the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners. The Children’s Trust provides funding for scholarships to non-profit organizations that enable abused, neglected, and disadvantaged children to attend summer camp classes.
