History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, has set the date of Saturday, October 30, at 6:30 p.m., for its 25th annual History Makers fundraiser at the Superyacht Pavilion facility on the south grounds of Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina (2301 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale). The special event, taking place during this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, will honor the Denison Family (Denison Yachting), Broward County yachting industry forerunners, with a History Makers Pioneer Family Award and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) CEO Phil Purcell will accept a Legacy Business Award for the organization’s 60+ years of industry and service at the event that commends individuals and companies who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

Denison Yachting (formerly Broward Marine) and its workforce were largely responsible for much of the marine industry that developed over the course of their 50 years of yacht construction that started on the south fork of the New River in Fort Lauderdale. In 1948, on their honeymoon, Frank and Gertrude Denison decided to buy a boat yard on the New River and shortly, thereafter, became the largest employer in Broward County, as well as the largest defense contractor in Florida. The contracts they secured for the construction of US Navy minesweepers during this time period led to the construction of large motor yachts. The Denison’s yachting business, launched in the early 1950s with the construction of the largest yacht built in the US, post WWII, the ALISA V, eventually led them to become most prolific large yacht builder in the world in 1993. The first of only two yacht builders in the US to have received this recognition.

The Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF), now celebrating its 60th anniversary, is the largest marine trade organization in the Southeast United States. It is dedicated to promoting, protecting, and growing the 111,000 middle class jobs in Broward County and 142,000 jobs regionally in marine businesses promoting boating lifestyles from family cruising and fishing to yachts and the goods and services that sustain them, driving the economic output to $8.9 billion in Broward County and $12 billion regionally. Created in 1961, the nonprofit trade group is focused on the sound growth of the marine industry in the South Florida Region to benefit its members, their customers, communities and the environment. The Association has over 500 members in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties and is the owner of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Through the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, advocacy efforts, programs and services of MIASF have combined to raise the professionalism of the industry and awareness of its impact and contributions by the public, elected, and regulatory officials at the local, state, and federal levels. Members have fostered a reputation for the region to be known as the goods and service center of the world for the yachting and marine community.

Previous History Maker honorees have included The Forman Family, “Alligator Ron” Bergeron, City Commissioner Steven Glassman, developer Dev Motwani, H. Wayne Huizenga, Chris Evert and Jimmy Evert, The Sun-Sentinel, Winterfest and Susan and Buddy Lochrie.

History Fort Lauderdale’s 2021 History Makers fundraiser is presented by Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center, Roscioli Yachting Center and Ocean Wine & Spirits. Weston’s most celebrated food and wine event is here! The Rotary Club of Weston is hosting its Food & Wine Festival, presented by BMW of Pembroke Pines, on Sept. 23 from 6:30–9 p.m. at Bonaventure Town Center in Weston. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Haiti Earthquake Support Relief, Kids in Distress, Honor Flight South Florida and the Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Club of Weston Food & Wine Festival is more than a festival, it’s a true dine and wine experience! The event will showcase an impressive roster of more than 25 of South Florida’s most talented chefs, food artisans and culinary personalities, as well as distinctive vintners. Dozens of restaurants in the Weston area will provide attendees with samples of some of their favorite menu items. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with local business professionals and leaders.

Those that purchase VIP tickets will also enjoy an hour-long ultimate VIP experience featuring Caymus Wines from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Since 1971, the Wagner Family has produced wines that are the most exceptional in the world. The experience will feature a 5-star restaurant sampling paired with Caymus Wines.

Sun Sentinel’s Arlene Borenstein will serve as the host for The Rotary Club of Weston Food & Wine Festival. BMW of Pembroke Pines is the title sponsor for the event. KUSH Hospitality Group’s (KHG) Matthew “Kush” Kuscher and the team are preparing for another wild event at Kush Hialeah. KHG events tend to have clever tongue-in-cheek motifs and this one brings a peculiar pop-culture happening to the 305. Beginning Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Noon, is Kush Hialeah’s newest monthly event (taking place on the last Sunday of every month) – Kok Sh*t Bingo in combination with Vintage Flea, KHG’s new flea market concept. Like most KHG events, there will be a non-profit partner benefitting from all the shenanigans – donations will be collected for local Miami Animal Rescue (view wish list of much needed items for dogs and cats HERE).
The unique event brings together food and drinks accompanied by bingo with a twist. During the event, guests purchase drinks to earn a free raffle ticket with a number on it. At exactly 3:05PM a live chicken will be placed in an outdoor chicken coop with a bingo board below it. Whatever number the chicken poops on is the winner. The entire process can take five minutes or an hour. Raffle tickets are limited, but can be obtained with the purchase of any featured cocktail by Skyy Vodka (one ticket per drink); or by donating to Miami Animal Rescue which earns attendees two tickets. Prizes include a $50 Kush Hospitality Group gift card; $50 Kush Hialeah bar tab; swag bags and more. Cooking with The Galleria LIVE returns with an opportunity to meet Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants’ Chef and Senior Area Culinary Operations Manager Stephen Puhr on Saturday, August 28, at 2 p.m. This special culinary experience will benefit Heart Gallery of Broward County, a respected nonprofit organization committed to finding loving families for the hardest to place foster children.

A limited audience will take their gourmet cooking skills to the next level as Chef Puhr prepares Classic Tomato Bruschetta, Gnocchi Carbonara and Cooper’s Hawk Berry Crisp. Then, attendees will sample this delicious trio while receiving tips on the perfect wine pairings.

For the past year, hundreds of thousands have enjoyed engaging cooking demonstrations virtually, as part of Cooking with The Galleria’s free online series. The Galleria has provided educational and spirited culinary tutorials about how to prepare and serve delicious dishes including Filet Medallions and Parmesan Crusted Lobster Tails, Caramelized Grilled Sea Scallops, Bone-in, Dry-rubbed Pork Chop, Chilean Sea Bass, Gruyere French Omelette, Maryland Style Lump Crab Cakes, Seafood Paella, Shrimp and Grits and Carne Asada Fajitas. Shooters Waterfront is proud to host That’s How We Roll “Sushi 101” Thursday, August 19 at 7:00 p.m. The “roll-it-yourself” class teaches all about the art of making, plating, and sake pairing for only $40 per person. Shooters Waterfront’s team of expert sushi chefs provide step-by-step instructions and patrons are encouraged to embrace a new skill set. For the past year, hundreds of thousands have enjoyed Seasons 52 Chef Elvis Bravo’s engaging cooking demonstrations virtually, as part of Cooking with The Galleria’s free online series. Now, Seasons 52 is offering a limited opportunity to meet Chef Bravo in-person on Saturday, July 31, at 2 p.m., at a special culinary experience to benefit the Heart Gallery of Broward County, a respected nonprofit organization committed to finding loving families for the hardest to place foster children.

Now available in South Florida! L’Chaim Farm, the only Cholov Yisroel Kosher farm in Florida, is hosting its Farmers Market every Sunday from 11 a.m.–4 p.m. The products are grown and produced on-site at L’Chaim Farm, using the highest standards of organic farming practices.

At the Farmers Market, guests can purchase products, including a variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs, a selection of KM-certified, Cholov Yisroel goat’s milk products (butter, regular milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk, cold brew, buttermilk and cheese), free range eggs and more.

There is a goat milking demo each Sunday at 12:15 p.m., and guests can also meet and pet the goats. The Farmers Markets will include a variety of new activities each week, including horseback riding, axe throwing, fishing, cornhole, giant Jenga, horseshoes, bocce ball and more. Guests can also take a tour of the greenhouse with Farm Manager Jordan Holder.

L’Chaim Farm Head Chef Yosef Schwartz brings a passion for Kosher foods and flavors to L’Chaim Farm. He has a long history with food delivery services and even founded his own Kosher catering company, Hassid + Hipster.

Each Thursday, L’Chaim Farm also offers a selection of fresh produce and goat’s milk products for its Shabbat Pick Up from 2-6 p.m.

Thankfully, The Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival presented by Capital One (SOBEWFF®) returned for 2021! It is a national, star-studded, four-day destination event showcasing the talents of the world’s most renowned wine and spirits producers, chefs and culinary personalities. Its 20th anniversary will take place May 20-23, 2021.All proceeds from the Festival benefit the Florida International University Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management and the Southern Wine & Spirits Beverage Management Center.

This year they opened with limited capacity and fewer events due to the pandemic. We stopped by the Grand Tasting on Sunday afternoon. The weather was spectacular and the energy was high. In fact, there was an excited buzz in the that had been dimming the past few years.

James Beard Award “Rising Star Chef of the Year” semifinalist Nando Chang is pleased to announce that his family’s highly acclaimed Nikkei-inspired restaurant Itamae, will host a series of collaborative dinners aimed to showcase the talents of brilliant culinarians, as well as pay tribute to the cultures and cuisines that make up the 305.

To kick things off, the restaurant has tapped local Chef Timon Balloo, the culinary visionary behind Sugarcane Raw Bar & Grill, Mrs. Balloo at The Wharf Fort Lauderdale, and the beloved and sorely missed Balloo Restaurant. The talented toque – who has received several James Beard Award nominations including “Best Chef: South” and “Best New Restaurant” for Sugarcane – will join forces with the team at Itamae to create an unforgettable menu that blends each chef’s unique style and heritage. Itamae’s refined Peruvian-Japanese flavors will be at play with Timon’s more rustic Asian-Caribbean cookery.

The a la carte dinner will take place on Sunday, April 25 beginning at 7PM. A nod to both Itamae and Balloo Restaurant, the menu features five tantalizing dishes. Standouts include Curry Calabaza Tiradito – black lime, sarza criolla, huacatay-cilantro leche de tigre; Nikkei Chili Crab – lump crab, ají rocoto, spiced torrejitas; and Mussels – curry amarillo. The restaurant’s natural, low intervention wine list created by Wine Director Karina Iglesias, will also be on offer. History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, has brought back its popular New River Open Air Market. Beginning Sunday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and each consecutive Sunday thereafter, residents and visitors can enjoy browsing handmade goods and treats on the historic campus, in a socially distanced atmosphere, in front of the New River Inn (231 SW Second Avenue) and along the Riverwalk.

Set along the banks of the New River under the shade of historic live oaks, the Open Air Market will feature more than 52 vendors offering a selection of curated locally made crafts, farm-fresh vegetables, fresh-baked bread and pastries, specialty plants including orchids and succulents, organic food, natural health and beauty products and more. Gourmet bites and beverages will be available to purchase onsite. Live music and a tattoo artist will add another artistic dimension to this community event.

Admission to the New River Open Air Market is free, however, guests are encouraged to take advantage of History Fort Lauderdale’s renowned tours and museums. General admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. May the luck and taste of the Irish be with you! Join Chef Stephen Puhr of Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants as he shows you how to prepare and enjoy traditional Corned Beef, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, on the next Cooking with The Galleria free virtual tutorial series on Facebook Live, Tuesday, March 16, at 2 p.m. Two special meals – Corned Beef and Cabbage and Corned Beef Sliders – will be available for dine-in, only, on St. Patrick’s (March 17). One segment viewer will be selected to receive a special gift from The Spice Lab, now open at The Galleria across from Bath & Body Works.

Chef Stephen Puhr discovered his unshakable passion for cooking and warm hospitality at the tender age of 15 while working in a small pizzeria on the south side of Chicago. As a graduate of Chicago’s Le Cordon Bleu, Puhr landed his first position as executive chef for Redstone American Grill at the age of 26. Puhr went on to serve as the Luxury Suite chef for the Utah Jazz, as well as lending his talents to the 2002 Winter Olympics. In 2012, Puhr joined the Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants team, where, today, his role as senior area culinary operations manager has him overseeing scratch kitchens at 10 Cooper’s Hawk locations.

Launched last year during the COVID-19 quarantine, Cooking with The Galleria has successfully entertained hundreds of thousands in the local community. Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants is the newest tasteful addition to the series. Previous instructional cooking segments have featured Chef Puhr preparing Filet Medallions and Parmesan Crusted Lobster Tails and Season’s 52 Chef Elvis Bravo serving-up delicious dishes including Caramelized Grilled Sea Scallops, Bone-in, Dry-rubbed Pork Chop, Maryland Style Lump Crab Cakes, Seafood Paella, Roasted Vegetable Gnocchi, Shrimp and Grits, Carne Asada Fajitas and Signature Blackened Mahi Tacos. The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale is currently open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The magic of Wynwood is back! After a year of silence, the Wynwood Marketplace is ready for its grand re-opening. SWARM Miami’s leading event agency has been hard at work rebuilding and enhancing their 55000 sqft mecca in the heart of Wynwood.

The Wynwood Marketplace known for its art and crafts market expansive food selection curated specialty cocktails world-renowned musical guest appearances and culturally driven activations will jubilantly reopen their doors on Thursday, March 4th at 4 PM. Guests can expect to be embraced into an alfresco oasis.

The new Wynwood Marketplace is home to the thedeck a casual but spunky bar that will have over a hundred socially distanced tables. Guests will have a choice to ‘people watch’ while sitting patio-side on the busy NW 2 Avenue or sit inside and jam-out to live music and DJs. All cocktails and food can be ordered via a QR Code and will be delivered by an enthusiastic team of servers right to your table.

SWARM’s beverage director Ashley Ermus upgraded the cocktail menu to reflect the passion and diversity represented within the neighborhood. “This menu plays to fresh local flavors like hibiscus and passion fruit that produce bright flavors and vibrant colors — and colors are what Wynwood is all about.” Locals & tourists can enjoy a hand-crafted cocktail menu ranging from light and fresh to tangy and spicy. The “Spicy Guava Margarita” made with tequila orange fresh guava fresh lime and fresh jalapeño is the crowd favorite. For a limited time, all specialty cocktails are available at a discount by the pitcher.
