Darlings…set out your Sunday finery and join South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) for a “Breakfast at Tiffany Brunch & Fashion Show” fundraiser at Bahia Mar (801 Seabreeze Blvd., Fort Lauderdale) on May 22. From 11 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., enjoy music, a fashion show, exclusive shopping and bubbly on the waterfront with a special performance by Erika Norell as Holly Golightly who will rock the runway and open the show in drag-a-licious style.

The program will begin at 11 a.m. with shopping and a Mimosa bar followed by a noon lunch and the fashion show.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra, recently named Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ first Partner in the Arts for its affiliated $30 million renovated venue, The Parker, recently concluded its 2021-22 season in spectacular style on April 27. Next up will be its Summer Series Chamber Music Concerts beginning May 26.

The South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s “Breakfast at Tiffany Brunch & Fashion Show” fundraiser is sponsored by Wonderland, Flora Ottimer, Hoffman’s Chocolates, Olivier Salon & Spa, Plumme & Petal, Provacativo Champagne, ShaMoon, Tops & Bottoms Men’s Boutique and Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming.

General tickets for are $150 each and $1,200 for a table of eight. VIP tickets are $225 each and $1,800 for a table of eight. The Lincoln Eatery is the first food hall in Miami Beach. The urban food collective houses a curated selection of 13 unique dining and drinking options featuring an eclectic assortment of global culinary concepts. This upcoming Mother’s Day, Ai Tallarin, an Asian-Peruvian fusion concept will be offering a dumpling making class on May 7 at 6pm.

To commemorate this lively evening with the utmost glamour and extravagance it deserves, El Tucán will be hosting the ever-so iconic Carmen Carrera – TV personality star and transgender rights activist – who will take the stage to enchant guests with a stimulating burlesque performance. Throughout the night, DJ Willy Monfret will be spinning upbeat house music, keeping the party going until late in the evening. Funding Arts Broward (FAB), a nonprofit organization committed to preserving and cultivating the arts in Broward County, will present its fifth annual “Black & White: A Night At The Museum” special event on Monday, April 25, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. This elegant black and white themed cocktail party at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale will feature an exclusive exhibit tour, live entertainment by Dillard High School Center for the Arts students, light bites and a decadent dessert table.

Attendees will have the opportunity to experience Lux et Veritas, a FAB-funded exhibit, at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale on a private tour by Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Lux et Veritas explores a transformative period in contemporary art by focusing on a generation of artists of color who attended Yale School of Art for graduate studies between 2000 and 2010. The exhibition’s title alludes to Yale University’s motto, “Lux et Veritas,” which translates from Latin to “Light and Truth.” In the context of this exhibition, the title references how these artists thought with critical complexity about their work and their movement through institutional structures. Featured artists include Mike Cloud, william cordova, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Abigail DeVille, Torkwase Dyson, John Espinosa, Luis Gispert, Rashawn Griffin, Leslie Hewitt, Loren Holland, Titus Kaphar, Jamerry Kim, Eric N. Mack, Wardell Milan, Wangechi Mutu, Mamiko Otsubo, Ronny Qevedo, Mickalene Thomas, Anna Tsouhlarakis, Shoshanna Weinberger and Kehinde Wiley.

As with similar programs, Yale School of Art, in New Haven, Connecticut, had not been historically diverse, which spurred these art students to form affiliations across the departments of painting, graphic design, sculpture, photography and art history. They filled gaps in the school’s curriculum and counteracted the lack of diversity among the faculty by inviting artists, curators and writers of color as advisors and guest speakers, developing an interdisciplinary forum, publishing art journals, organizing exhibitions and documenting their experiences in video and photography. The relationships they formed at school evolved into communities that networked and provided essential support and feedback for one another, often passing on these efforts beyond graduate study. Their reevaluation of the Western art canon, and commitment to the method and practice of teaching has contributed to a greater recognition of artists of color, challenged stereotypes and enriched the overall shared spaces of learning and thinking about art and the art praxis.

Lux et Veritas provides a public forum in which to address the directions these artists took based on the explorations that began in graduate school and were instilled thereafter in their practice. The exhibition is curated by Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator, NSU Art Museum. Mike Cloud (Yale, MFA 2003), william cordova (Yale, MFA 2004), Leslie Hewitt (Yale, MFA 2004) and Irene V. Small, associate professor, Contemporary Art & Criticism, Princeton University (Yale, Ph.D. 2008) are advisors on the exhibition. Oral histories with the artists who attended the School of Art provided significant insight into their experiences, relationships, and work.

Champagne and cocktails, culinary delights, and selections by DJ Israel Charles, arts and music program director at Dillard High School Center for the Arts, will add to this festive event. Guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite black and white cocktail attire.

After a successful debut in 2020, Kuba Cabana, a lively dining concept where “Old World Cuba Meets Modern Miami,” is announcing its 2022 “Cocktails & Cabaret” lineup. Orno, the new restaurant by 4-time James Beard Award nominee and Food & Wine Magazine’s Best New Chefs Class of 2020, Chef Niven Patel, presents Volume II of the tasting series called Library Libations. Each month the New American restaurant will feature a dinner and a multi-course tasting featuring rare pours from some of the industry’s most lauded wine and spirit brands. The dinner will include a bespoke menu by Chef Niven, inside Orno’s private dining room called The Library.

On Thursday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m., Orno partnered with Tuscan wine producer Tenuta San Guido for an evening of wine tastings and culinary delights. The evening will commence with a pour of Ca Del Bosco’s “Anna Maria Clemente” and small bites by the Orno team. After grazing outside of The Library, the guests will move inside for the Tenuta San Guido tastings and a 4-course meal that pairs perfectly. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts presents Rhythm by the River, a festival celebrating some of the most exciting and innovative Black voices in Broward County.

The community is invited to come together for a fun-filled day of music, dance, drama, poetry and interactive events for the whole family. Hosted by WPLG-Local 10 anchor and reporter Alexis Frazier, this free community event features live performances, food trucks, workshops, arts and crafts, and more throughout the afternoon.

On the mainstage, Purple Flux delivers a fusion of Hip-Hop and R&B sounds. The Randy Corinthian Quintet brings a soulful and sophisticated set of smooth jazz hits. The beat continues with West African Drum and Dance ensemble Troupe Fallou. Renegade Theatre Company offers a dynamic array of Broadway musical hits drawn from their repertoire. Art Prevails Project presents a mix of spoken word and theatrical vignettes from their critically acclaimed work. Guests will enjoy a sneak peek at the upcoming play Head Above Water: The Life of Esther Rolle by Darius V. Daughtry, directed by Bianca LaVerne Jones, commissioned by the African American Research Library and Cultural Center. As the grand finale, violin virtuosi Sons of Mystro headline the festivities merging their unique blend of classical strings with reggae hits and American pop songs along with some of their own original work.

Everyone is invited to participate in creating a community mural with visual artist Constance Ivana out in the park, or head to the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom at the Broward Center to take part in a Teeny Violini music workshop with New Canon Chamber Collective’s founder Portia Dunkley, a spoken word poetry session with performer and FLO’etry founder Jerris “Quick the Poet” Evans or a Hip-Hop dance class with choreographer and Developing Dreams Foundation’s executive director Pablo Malco.

There will be opportunities to get to know your neighbors, enjoy outstanding entertainment, and learn more about the African American Research Library and Cultural Center’s Vicennial of Black Excellence, Art Prevails Project, Black Violin Foundation, FLO’etry, Developing Dreams Foundation, New Canon Chamber Collective, Old Dillard Museum, Renegade Theatre Company and much more.

Rhythm by the River is part of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Arts for Action: Black Voices initiative, which uses the arts as a catalyst to raise awareness, deepen knowledge, and mobilize action on social justice issues.

Back again this year are the thrilling Japanese Taiko drummers Fushu Daiko. Guests will be amazed by their thundering rhythms, dynamic movements, and intense showmanship. Free Japanese flower arrangement (ikebana) workshops will be offered as well. Festival-goers are encouraged to visit the Consulate-General of Japan’s booth, where guests can learn about and experience many interesting aspects of Japanese culture.

The festival offers a way to actively experience and learn about the traditions, contributions, and heritage of Asia. Children will have educational adventures across Asia by visiting each country’s booth. In addition, a children’s playground will offer games, rock climbing, a bounce house, and more.

Attracting thousands of visitors every year, the festival seeks to continue bringing together the South Florida community-at-large for years to come and keep promoting the importance of cultural diversity and inclusivity for building a vibrant, prosperous and healthy community.

Foodies, get ready! Gulfstream Park and its iconic Pegasus statue will serve as the venue for the event. Guests are invited to come dressed in all-white ensembles and be prepared to celebrate in high SOBEWFF® style.

The Festival’s Hallandale Beach Event Series is a part of the Hallandale Beach Community Redevelopment Agency’s (HBCRA) strategic plan to promote economic development by branding the city as a destination for food, arts and entertainment, while also attracting international exposure to local participating restaurants. This is the third year in a row that the HBCRA is partnering with SOBEWFF® to host the Hallandale Beach Event Series.

This exciting evening of outdoor fun, wine, food, art, live music, and entertainment will be hosted by MasterChef finalist and TikTok sensation Nick DiGiovanni. Guests can enjoy the sights while sipping refreshing libations from the Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits portfolio.

The event will feature a variety of international cuisines. Gulfstream Park Village’s participating restaurants include Yard House, Ten Palms and Belly Fish. Other participating restaurants include Moises Bakery, Screaming Carrots, Dr. Limon Hallandale, CAO Bakery & Café, Nana’s Food for You, Il Mercato Café Restaurant, Dunn’s River Island Café, Ceviche Avenue, Chef Irie, See Thai & Japanese Cuisine, Nana’s SapiBon Haitian Restaurant, D’s Delights, El Tamarindo Coal Fired Pizza, Chapultepec Mexican Restaurant, The Krazy Vegan, La Estancia Argentina, Matteo’s Trattoria, Don Lolo’s, Wapo Tacos, El Tayta, Urban Thai & Sushi, Mable’s Island Kitchen, and Chef Nick DiGiovanni.

All net proceeds from the Festival benefit the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management students at Florida International University. Each year, over 1,200 student volunteers help organize all aspects of the event, including planning, logistics, and overall execution.

At the brink of Art Basel Miami Beach, Wayku Restaurants – the Latin fusion hotspot in the heart of Wynwood’s art district – will partner with Tomas Redrado Art (TRA) to organize a weeklong Art Basel activation, showcasing Argentine artworks on display from Nov. 28th through Dec. 5th.

The highlight of the evening will be the fashion runway show that will feature the Men of Style honorees wearing the season’s top trending styles from Macy’s and Dillard’s. An afterparty will be held at Blue Martini.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, has set the date of Saturday, October 30, at 6:30 p.m., for its 25th annual History Makers fundraiser at the Superyacht Pavilion facility on the south grounds of Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina (2301 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale). The special event, taking place during this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, will honor the Denison Family (Denison Yachting), Broward County yachting industry forerunners, with a History Makers Pioneer Family Award and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) CEO Phil Purcell will accept a Legacy Business Award for the organization’s 60+ years of industry and service at the event that commends individuals and companies who have made an impact on the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale.

Denison Yachting (formerly Broward Marine) and its workforce were largely responsible for much of the marine industry that developed over the course of their 50 years of yacht construction that started on the south fork of the New River in Fort Lauderdale. In 1948, on their honeymoon, Frank and Gertrude Denison decided to buy a boat yard on the New River and shortly, thereafter, became the largest employer in Broward County, as well as the largest defense contractor in Florida. The contracts they secured for the construction of US Navy minesweepers during this time period led to the construction of large motor yachts. The Denison’s yachting business, launched in the early 1950s with the construction of the largest yacht built in the US, post WWII, the ALISA V, eventually led them to become most prolific large yacht builder in the world in 1993. The first of only two yacht builders in the US to have received this recognition.

The Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF), now celebrating its 60th anniversary, is the largest marine trade organization in the Southeast United States. It is dedicated to promoting, protecting, and growing the 111,000 middle class jobs in Broward County and 142,000 jobs regionally in marine businesses promoting boating lifestyles from family cruising and fishing to yachts and the goods and services that sustain them, driving the economic output to $8.9 billion in Broward County and $12 billion regionally. Created in 1961, the nonprofit trade group is focused on the sound growth of the marine industry in the South Florida Region to benefit its members, their customers, communities and the environment. The Association has over 500 members in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties and is the owner of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Through the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, advocacy efforts, programs and services of MIASF have combined to raise the professionalism of the industry and awareness of its impact and contributions by the public, elected, and regulatory officials at the local, state, and federal levels. Members have fostered a reputation for the region to be known as the goods and service center of the world for the yachting and marine community.

Previous History Maker honorees have included The Forman Family, “Alligator Ron” Bergeron, City Commissioner Steven Glassman, developer Dev Motwani, H. Wayne Huizenga, Chris Evert and Jimmy Evert, The Sun-Sentinel, Winterfest and Susan and Buddy Lochrie.

History Fort Lauderdale’s 2021 History Makers fundraiser is presented by Safe Harbor Lauderdale Marine Center, Roscioli Yachting Center and Ocean Wine & Spirits. This year’s significant event that will coincide with LGBT+ History Month will honor stage and screen acting legend and philanthropist Julie Newmar (Catwoman, “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar”) with the DMK Harvey Milk Foundation ICON Award, social influencer Brian Christopher with the Harvey Milk Foundation Visibility Medal, Lithuanian filmmaker Romas Zabarauskas with the Harvey Milk Foundation LGBTQ Champion Award and Visit Lauderdale with the Alan Schubert Award. Receiving the prestigious Diversity Honors awards are Director of Transgender Equality for Equality Florida Action, Inc. Gina Duncan, attorney and activist Shenika “Nik” Harris, Executive Director for Legal Aid Service of Broward County Anthony J. Karrat and entrepreneur Linda Rae.

The celebratory evening will include an elegant cocktail reception featuring a balloon pop and a raffle of luxury items followed by a seated dinner with an open bar, the awards presentation and live entertainment by Company B (“Fascinated”). The special event will be emceed by Jacey Birch, WPLG news anchor, with awards presented by Stuart Milk as the co-founder and board president of the Harvey Milk Foundation. Mandatory COVID-19 rapid testing begins at 4 p.m.

The event is a collaborative effort that will continue to keep South Florida on the international stage of LGBT+ rights and activism in honor of Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States who was assassinated shortly after winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. This year marks the 43rd anniversary of Harvey Milk’s historic service.

Weston’s most celebrated food and wine event is here! The Rotary Club of Weston is hosting its Food & Wine Festival, presented by BMW of Pembroke Pines, on Sept. 23 from 6:30–9 p.m. at Bonaventure Town Center in Weston. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Haiti Earthquake Support Relief, Kids in Distress, Honor Flight South Florida and the Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Club of Weston Food & Wine Festival is more than a festival, it’s a true dine and wine experience! The event will showcase an impressive roster of more than 25 of South Florida’s most talented chefs, food artisans and culinary personalities, as well as distinctive vintners. Dozens of restaurants in the Weston area will provide attendees with samples of some of their favorite menu items. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with local business professionals and leaders.

Those that purchase VIP tickets will also enjoy an hour-long ultimate VIP experience featuring Caymus Wines from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Since 1971, the Wagner Family has produced wines that are the most exceptional in the world. The experience will feature a 5-star restaurant sampling paired with Caymus Wines.

KUSH Hospitality Group’s (KHG) Matthew “Kush” Kuscher and the team are preparing for another wild event at Kush Hialeah. KHG events tend to have clever tongue-in-cheek motifs and this one brings a peculiar pop-culture happening to the 305. Beginning Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Noon, is Kush Hialeah’s newest monthly event (taking place on the last Sunday of every month) – Kok Sh*t Bingo in combination with Vintage Flea, KHG’s new flea market concept. Like most KHG events, there will be a non-profit partner benefitting from all the shenanigans – donations will be collected for local Miami Animal Rescue (view wish list of much needed items for dogs and cats HERE).

Kuba Cabana, a lively dining concept where “Old World Cuba Meets Modern Miami” is hosting “Cocktails & Cabaret.” Located in the vibrant CityPlace Doral, the series of exhilarating evenings will take place on the last Thursday of every month. For a fresh way to spend Sundays and support local businesses, the Town of Surfside invites the public to its outdoor Farmers Market. The popular market returns to the area after a brief hiatus and is helmed by Surfside resident Javier Valmana, who is also the creator of Wavey Acai Bowls.

With COVID-19 guidelines enforced, visitors can safely shop for home decor, artisan items, apparel, handmade jewelry and baked goods, or fuel up on delicious fare from a plant-based vendor, healthy acai bowls and Peruvian-style cuisine. Cooking with The Galleria LIVE returns with an opportunity to meet Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants’ Chef and Senior Area Culinary Operations Manager Stephen Puhr on Saturday, August 28, at 2 p.m. This special culinary experience will benefit Heart Gallery of Broward County, a respected nonprofit organization committed to finding loving families for the hardest to place foster children.

A limited audience will take their gourmet cooking skills to the next level as Chef Puhr prepares Classic Tomato Bruschetta, Gnocchi Carbonara and Cooper’s Hawk Berry Crisp. Then, attendees will sample this delicious trio while receiving tips on the perfect wine pairings.

For the past year, hundreds of thousands have enjoyed engaging cooking demonstrations virtually, as part of Cooking with The Galleria’s free online series. The Galleria has provided educational and spirited culinary tutorials about how to prepare and serve delicious dishes including Filet Medallions and Parmesan Crusted Lobster Tails, Caramelized Grilled Sea Scallops, Bone-in, Dry-rubbed Pork Chop, Chilean Sea Bass, Gruyere French Omelette, Maryland Style Lump Crab Cakes, Seafood Paella, Shrimp and Grits and Carne Asada Fajitas.
