New Era, Cool J’s, Cushy Gigs Presents: Locals Only at Midpoint Miami

Miami’s Abstrk, Atomik, Pucho and Quake are four legendary MSG crew artists with a large following with the amazing talent and street creed to match. There will also be additional paintings and sculptures by Crome, Hoxxoh, Hest, Arive, Xeno, Five, Ox, Eson. The show will be co-curated by Jill C. Weisberg and Omar Khan.

The artists have have collaborated with New Era and Cool J’s. Abstrk, Atomik, Pucho, Quake have designed their own limited edition snap back hat with New Era, the industry standard in handcrafted, embroidered caps.

MSG has been creating large-scale graffiti murals in Miami, Florida for close to 20 years. Artists range from sculptors and bombers to fine artists and illustrators. The MSG crew started when a group of up and coming artists were doing a new style of graffiti that they considered Miami Style Graffiti. MSG members didn’t feel that the established crews, who were still doing 80’s style New York graffiti at the time, represented their work so they started their own movement. Back then there wasn’t the internet to lean on for inspiration; there was break dance movies, zines and the competition. The older artists kept their techniques to themselves because they were threatened by the younger artists who were getting up everywhere and backing that up with first-rate productions. Now MSG is the established crew, but times have changed and now they feel part of the same community that once persecuted them.

“ARTISTically Fashioned” Art Basel Celebration
Due to overwhelming response and success of last year’s event, “ARTISTically Fashioned” Art Basel Celebration is returning to the heart of Midtown Miami during the most prestigious and internationally known art celebration in Miami, ART BASEL 2014. With art invading fashion; on December 5th and 6th, 2014, ARTISTically Fashioned! will be of avant garde, abstracted by bright colors and hip fashion. Artistic expressions created through art and reflected by fashion.

Come enjoy a 6,000 square feet boutique enhanced with a live showroom experience. Models posed and styled LIVE while artists posted in various areas painting LIVE. The celebration will take place inside The Alessandra Gold Concept Store; four walls filled with the concepts of Alessandra Gold. A collaborative space featuring both Gold’s house label, her KruZin shoe label, vintage finds and an international assortment of designers- not to mention a full photo studio adjacent to the shoe section.

Un Cutt Art.jpg NYC street artist, known for his MJ portraits, Un Cutt Ink will be in the zone painting live outside as you enter!

Goddess Fashion Factory local designer Loreal Banks will be on site sewing special “Artistically Fashioned” limited edition original clutches.
Eco Fashion + Eco Art = “Atizana Inspired” – made from recycled oil drums and hand painted with tropical love from Haiti.
These beautiful pieces from sculptures to accessories will be at ARTISTically Fashioned! this year!

Fiber artist, Constance BLACKMON Lee explores the relationship and combination of conventional everyday materials and unconventional materials found in nature. Bringing these together using traditional processes such as loom weaving, crocheting and coiling basketry, produces opportunities to re-purpose and re-use several materials into exciting art adventures. Her goal is to transcend the objects expected life-cycle into unexpected and interesting “art-infused longevity”.

From beatboxing to poetry, KIND Healthy Snacks encourages South Florida to Do the KIND Thing® by joining them in recognition of our community’s most talented young artists. During Art Basel 2014, KIND will shine a light on the importance of music and the arts in the lives of youth through their ichooseart campaign, an effort that includes several spontaneous street performances by student artists, a formal gallery of their work, and a unique opening night celebration. Focusing on the power of choice, KIND hopes to inspire guests to make powerful decisions in their lives both large and small, from living healthy lifestyles all the way to leaving a positive mark on the world through simple acts of kindness.

Starting with a Thursday night student showcase from 6:30 pm – 10:30 pm at Brick House Wynwood (187 NW 28th Street), KIND invites the community to experience the talent, passion and dedication of local young performers while enjoying cocktails, refreshments and the buzz of Midtown Miami. This event, free and open to the public, will serve as the kickoff to a series of pop-up performances that Basel-goers will spot throughout the city on December 5 and 6.
By joining the ichooseart movement, Art Basel attendees will reinforce the notion of art being accessible to all, something that can provide light in the dark, guidance and inspiration… all starting with the powerful choice to live a KINDer, healthier, more positive life.

Rem Koolhaas’ highly anticipated Residences at Park Grove just added more extras to the extraordinary, as developers Terra Group and The Related Group unveiled the secret to the perfect life during a private celebration with Colin Cowie, and first view of Jaume Plensa’s sculpture series “The Three Poets” in its permanent new home in Coconut Grove.

Cowie, known for his lavish international productions and celebrity clientele like Oprah Winfrey and Tom Cruise, is creating the ultimate sensory experience as the official “Lifestyle Curator” for Park Grove residents, with exquisitely good taste and touches, from the reception at valet, to the chilled hand towels and sun products served poolside on silver trays.
“The experience will be in a constant state of change, as the day becomes night, the music that is playing, the volume at which it plays, how the lights are set, and the fragrance in the air—it will all evolve,” said Cowie, as he toasted guests. “These are just a sliver of the nuances that we will orchestrate to create the aura of Park Grove.”
Nearly 1,000 guests enjoyed an elaborate production with lush greenery throughout, true to the Coconut Grove and Park Grove aesthetic—along with posh lounge areas, flowing champagne and even a full coffee bar—peeks into the sublime lifestyle the property will boast.
The Plensa sculpture series has traveled the globe with installations in public spaces before the developers acquired it for Park Grove. Plensa is best known for his public, monumental figurative sculptures that can be seen across the globe from Calgary to Dubai—The Three Poets continues the international artist’s theme and is visible to the public along Bayshore Drive, internally lit and sitting atop 20-foot poles overlooking the bay.

Notable Guests: Colin Cowie, national authority on wedding and event planning and amenities curator for Park Grove; Pedro Martin, CEO & Cofounder of Terra Group; David Martin, President and Co-founder of Terra Group; Jorge Perez, President and CEO The Related Group; Carlos Rosso, President of the Condo Division at The Related Group; Patrick Campbell, Vice President at The Related Group; Horacio de Leon, President Douglas Elliman Development Marketing;

What is Secret Walls?
Secret Walls (formerly Secret Wars) is the World’s premier live illustration battle. Working in a similar way to Fight Club, Secret Walls battles are set up and promoted through word of mouth & social media. Battles take place between 2 individuals, or 2 teams of artists.

Secret Walls began back in 2006 in a small bar in East London, it was small, and intimate yet had the potential to be so much more. Years of hard work, dedication and a strong following has meant Secret Walls has pushed the boundaries and raised the bar for artists and promoters alike on an international stage.

Boasting experience in major cities including NYC, London, Lisbon, Berlin, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Dublin and Amsterdam, proves and many more, proves that there really isn’t a stage big enough for the groundbreaking and award-winning event.

Rules And Regulations For The Competition

Only black SW special markers and black acrylic paint can be used as battle weapons
No pencils / sketches should be on stage or used as reference
Each artist has to stay within the allocated space, if they creep over then there will be a 1 point deduction

Hosted on giant white walls

The mural painting is an invitational, combining experienced artists with emerging talent, to truly represent the exploding Miami street art scene. A portion of the art sales goes to support Life Is Art, with the rest going to the artists who will collectively share sales on all work in the community project. In addition, SPECTRUM Miami has committed to donate a portion of the Thursday Late Night proceeds to Life Is Art.

TeePop
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Tee Davis began painting portraits at 6 years old & further developed her artistic talents at the Art Institute of Pennsylvania. Tee made her way to New York City, where she lived, worked, & painted for serval years before moving to Miami, FL. She received a degree in graphic design from International Fine Arts College.
Drawing on a deep love of music & pop culture, Tee has been fusing the styles of Pop, Street, & Graphic Design in her paintings of musicians, actors, & icons for more than two decades! Constantly gathering inspiration from music, culture & everyday life.

Ruben Ubiera
Ruben Gerardo Ubiera Gonzalez (born October 19, 1975 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a neo-figurative artist, known for his strong use of the line, graffiti inspired technique/esthetic, urban murals, mixed-media pieces and installations, all created with reclaimed-objects and found artifacts. He paints and draws in a style considered as Post graffism, but he prefers to call it urban-pop, since he has lived most of his life in urban, populated areas and most of his inspiration is derived from the interactivity between man and his urban environment. At the age of 1 5, his family moved to the Bronx, NY, where he was heavily influenced by the graffiti art that surrounded him, something he wouldn’t realize until much later in his life.
Ubiera’s paintings are, on first examination, noted for being charged with “skateboard-isms”, paint drips and the constant presence of graffiti in some shape or form. But, after closer inspection, one notices the detail, sarcastic contrast, the social commentary and human struggle that’s felt by the technique and subject matter.

Eleazar Delgado
Born in Oklahoma and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Eleazar Delgado practiced Architecture and Interior Design. It was Miami’s radiant sunshine and the vibrant colors of the city that influenced his decision to become an artist. Among his accolades are Dade Heritage Trust selecting “Sunshine Culture” for the cover of their 2012 program, Miami Dade Preservation League chose “Joe Sent Me” for the official Art Deco Weekend poster. “Sea Grasses in the Sky”, a public mural in Downtown Miami delights thousands of commuters everyday, as it is visible from I-95.

Monique Lassooij
Monique Lassooij was born and raised in The Netherlands and moved several years ago to Miami, Florida. In The Netherlands Ms. Lassooij started out as an abstract painter but over the years she developed a passion for figurative painting. She attended the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in The Hague and has gone on to receive several commissions and can be found in public places such as the Town Hall of the city of Scheveningen in The Netherlands as well as in numerous private collections all over the world.
“My work explores the paradox in modern pop culture and society, sometimes clearly visible and sometimes through an underlining dichotomy interjected with humor.” Currently she is working on the “Proprietary Innocence” series. She noticed that children nowadays have a different way to communicate through a little box and they are not vocal about it. When they find something funny you will see a shrug in the shoulders and the typing of “LOL”. But if you distract them, they look at us from under their eyebrows, almost expression less, sometimes slightly annoyed as we disturb them in their communications.

Daniel Fila (aka Krave)
Daniel Fila, also known as Krave, is a multifaceted artist whose work ranges from mural installations to figurative and abstract paintings, animations, and urban sculpture using a range of mediums, techniques, and aesthetics. Fila is best known for his signature character, The Fresh Monkey, which he incorporates into most of his works, his semi-nude mural “Erin” and the subsequent series which it inspired, “The Sunbather”.
Although much of Fila’s street art can be found throughout Wynwood and the Miami Design District, Fila has ventured into Little Havana’s burgeoning art scene with a mural entitled “Ladies in White”, which was inspired by the Damas de Blanco, an opposition movement in Cuba, and a new project space, “El Fresco” where he currently works and collaborates.

Jay Bellicchi (aka REMOTE)
J. Bellicchi, a Boston native, moved to Miami in 2000. Shortly thereafter Jay started “FIFTYTHREE”, a limited edition T-shirt line. Jay adopted the name “FIFTYTHREE as his creative identity throughout the mid 2000’s. Later as Jay got back into graffiti art he revived an old name of his from back in Boston, “REMOTE”. Jay has since been painting walls, commissioned murals and fine art pieces throughout. Jay’s work has been featured in countless South Florida publications as well as some national and internationally distributed art books. Jay is the creator and co-founder of “GRAFF TOYZ” which was founded in 2010. GRAFF TOYZ creates graffiti inspired toys and art objects.

In Lifted, Buil’s solo show; the visual and performance artist, musician, dancer, photographer and videographer pulls no stops in her Overstuffed Girl series with characters like “Adipose Tissue,” exploring self-absorption, gargantuanism and detachment. Confrontational, informed by a radical feminism that is inherently nonconformist to society standards and expectations; Buil is a modern woman who often challenges the perceptions of gender politics in an arena dominated by pop culture.

Hôtel Gaythering to Host “Queer Biennial I” – an Unabashed Exhibition of Queerness – During Art Basel Weekend

Miami Beach – November 18, 2014 – Definitely not your Grandma’s knit-one-purl-two, performance artist Ben Cuevas will knit himself a jock strap while nude as part of “Queer Biennial I,” an LGBT-focused art exhibition to be held during Art Basel Weekend at the Hôtel Gaythering. In addition to Cuevas knitting in the raw, “Queer Biennial I” will spotlight 35 artists and more than 100 pieces of art throughout the hotel property in what curator Rubén Esparza calls, “a national survey of the current moment in queer/LGBT culture from artists who do not shy away from sexuality, identity, the body or all around queerness.” “Queer Biennial I” is open to the public Thursday, December 4, to Sunday, December 7, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Hôtel Gaythering is located at 1409 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach.

Cuevas’ point to naked knitting? To comment on the absurdity of gendered notions of work. (http://bencuevas.com) Other artists exhibiting during “Queer Biennial I” include Gio Black Peter, a visual and performance artist whose works examine text and subject, truth and fakery, rebellion and authority. Black Peter’s art relies heavily on interaction with the viewer and his or her willingness to suspend rational thoughts and play into the believability of lies and falsehoods. (http://www.gioblackpeter.com)

Inspired equally by his landscape painting father and his singer/songwriter mother, Scooter LaForge (http://scooterlaforge.tumblr.com) honed his painting voice in the San Francisco and New York art scenes. Difficult to categorize or label, LaForge’s paintings are at once pop art with undertones of debauchery, and are definitely NSFW. Rick Castro’s films and photographs explore the world of fetish and the fringes of sexual culture. He describes his nudes as an antidote to his career in fashion as a wardrobe stylist and his films as an exploration of what may considered bizarre now, but will become the standard of the future. (http://www.rickcastro.com)

Neon sculpture artist Lili Lakich (http://www.lakich.com) views her artwork as drawings … lines that glow. Her illuminating works range from playful to sobering and run the gamut from female nudes to monumental sculptures. The shimmering, pulsing, luminous vibrancy of neon gives her sculptures a 21st century edge, despite the medium’s primal appeal. Multimedia artist, filmmaker and writer Slava Mogutin was exiled from his native Russia for his outspoken writings and LGBT activism. Fleeing to the U.S. in 1995, he became the first Russian to be granted political asylum in the U.S. on the grounds of homophobic persecution. Today, his visual art is inspired by that dissident background and encompasses themes of displacement and identity; transgression and disfiguration of masculinity and gender crossover; urban youth subcultures and adolescent sexuality; the clash of social norms and individual desires; and the tension between attachment and disaffection, hate and love.

Curator Esparza, who will be exhibiting some of his ad-themed visual pun artwork, came up with the idea of “Queer Biennial I” as a way to showcase emerging, mid-career and established Out / Queer / LGBT artists from the visual, performance and video art disciplines. In addition to being out and proud, these artists all have one thing in common: they are not afraid to venture into the realms of body, identity and eroticism.

“Every one of these artists is brave,” Esparza said. “They are uncompromising in their willingness to step outside the boundaries of polite society to create art that they are passionate about.”

“As Miami Beach’s only gay hotel, we wanted to bring an exhibition to the property during Art Basel that holds a mirror up to the LGBT community,” said Alex Guerra, co-owner and creative director for the Hôtel Gaythering, who will also be exhibiting during Queer Biennial. “After the exhibition’s debut showing in L.A. this summer, we knew ‘Queer Biennial I’ was a perfect fit and something we wanted the local and visiting LGBT community to experience.”

While queer-themed art is not for everyone, the prices of the art for sale to aficionados will be, Guerra says, as the artwork tops out at $2,000.

Other artists participating in “Queer Biennial I” include: Boston, Connie Fleming, JON VAZ GAR, Angela Gleason, Glen Hanson, Chasen Igleheart, Josef Jasso, Brian Kenny, Bruce LaBruce, Alex La Cruz, Jeremy Lucido, Ian MacKinnon, Dave Naz, Mel Odom, Miguel Angel Reyes, Robert W. Richards, Stuart Sandford, Tawnie Silva, Jacques Smith, AB Soto, SUPERM, Alonso Tapia, Joey Terrill, Maurice Vellekoop, Amy Von Harrington, Daniella Woolf, Rich Yap and Austin Young.

In addition to its run in conjunction with Art Basel, “Queer Biennial I” will be open at Hôtel Gaythering through January 14, 2015. For information, visit www.gaythering.com and click on the “events calendar” tab.

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida will, once again embark on a journey to the Land of the Sweets, as they perform the traditional annual audience favorite, The Nutcracker based on the tale of Ernest Hoffman with Tchaikovsky’s popular score and choreographed and directed by Vladimir Issaev.
This is the most popular holiday story ever performed in the US. It tells the tale of a young girl, Clara, on Christmas Eve and the adventure she undertakes when her most cherished Christmas present, a nutcracker, comes to life. Together they battle the Mouse King, meet the Queen of Snow and travel to the Land of Sweets, where they encounter the always classic, Sugarplum Fairy.
Issaev’s engaging choreography preserves the Russian tradition and serves as an alternative to those who already have seen Balanchine’s version. Every year the production is enhanced, adding special effects like falling snow and a growing Christmas tree, which enchant children and adults, making each year a new experience for returning audiences.
The enthusiastic young company features a team of professional dancers performing the principal roles, as well as a community cast made up of local character artists and children for the party scene. The engaging choreography- from the fun of the party scene- to the harrowing battle scene- to the enchanting kingdom of the sweets- is guaranteed to entertain any age. Not only is it the most popular ballet enjoyed by all audiences around the world during this time of the year but it also serves as an introduction to ballet for the very young audiences.
The principal roles in The Nutcracker will be commanded by Arts Ballet’s new stars Takayuki Asai, Yukina Yasuhara, Hirofumi Kitazume, Lillian Hill, Ramil Bagmanov, Ben Cook, Saori Morioka, Elise Shea.

Vladimir Issaev’s holiday tradition will be presented in three magnificent venues: the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater, the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center and The Parker Playhouse of Fort Lauderdale.
You Can Join the Magical Adventure
As every year, the Opening Gala performance takes place at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater, which celebrate the company’s seventeen years of making holiday magic. For VIP Patrons, the December 7th Gala will begin at 6:30 pm, with cocktails and hors Hors d’oeuvres, a reception with the international corps of dancers, and chances to bid on silent auction items such as Tiffany’s jewels, Spa Packages, Holiday baskets, Hilton Cabana’s weekend getaway, Disney packages, Sports memorabilia, and many more. For more information on how to participate visit www.artsballettheatre.org, or call (305) 948-4777

Engage in the holiday gift loved ones will always cherish. Don’t miss the opportunity to share the excitement and charm of the great tradition of the holidays with Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida during their extraordinary performances of “The Nutcracker.”

Photographs of Mad Hatter Arts Festival 2014 at The Barnacle Historic State Park on 11/15/14

Mad Hatter Arts Festival 2014 at The Barnacle Historic State Park on Saturday, November 15, 2014.

Art Show: The Mad Hatter Arts Festival is a fun, zany art and music festival, held each autumn in the historic village of Coconut Grove, located on lovely Biscayne Bay. “The Grove” has a deep Bohemian history of quirky artists and musicians. In fact, the name of the festival draws its inspiration from a popular 1970s song Coconut Grove written by John Sebastian of the internationally famous group, the Lovin’ Spoonful.

The two-day event celebrates its tenth year on Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16, with artists exhibiting on the grounds of The Barnacle Historic State Park and on the sidewalks along Main Highway. Other components of the Festival can be seen around the Grove. Bring your friends, bring your family, and join the fun “…in Coconut Grove.”

O. Ascanio Gallery is opening a major exhibition of work by celebrated illustrator, sculptor and public artist Jorge Blanco. Over three decades, Blanco has built a following of devotees and collectors. First with his beloved comic strip “El Naufrago,” (The Castaway), and later through his large-scale geometrical sculptures, 26 of which have been commissioned publicly in the United States, Latin America and Asia.

Jorge Blanco’s signature creations offer universal appeal; they are testaments to the glory of passion and optimism of everyday life. He translates poetic humor as an illustrator into vivacious sculptures that engage viewers with an evocative and distinct choreography. Bright primary colors and geometric shapes form athletes, fruit, animals and abstractions.

This retrospective is bringing together diverse works across mediums showcasing Blanco’s most recognizable projects. Included are a series of watercolors inspired by “The Castaway,” his graphic and illustrative work in children’s storybooks, big and small collectible sculptures, and pieces from his decorative design line, such as coffee tables, benches, design mugs and more.

Jorge Blanco lives and works in Sarasota, Florida. In addition to his public art commissions, he has created numerous works for private collectors in Brazil, Canada, Switzerland, France, Venezuela, Uruguay, Argentina, Germany, Belgium, China, Indonesia, Japan, the Dominican Republic and the USA. He’s the recipient of multiple accolades, most recent is the DCOTA Stars of Design 2013.

Introduction by The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami Director, Babacar M’Bow

IRREVERSIBLE is delighted to announce the 2014 Featured Magazine Competition Winners Congratulations!
Richard Herzog, Taylor Pilote, Natalie Dunham, Judy Gelles, Bear Kirkpatrick, Ira Upin, Anna Olsson, Randy Burman, Jaber AlAzmeh, Oscar Fuentes

As the state’s only large format magazine competition, for our 3rd consecutive year IRREVERSIBLE has introduced the work of thousands – local, estate, national and international artists – working in all media: emerging, mid-career, and established artists. Our annual Featured Artists Competition reinforces Irreversible commitment to artists, provides professional exhibition opportunities for emerging artists, and reveals a provocative and aggressive glimpse – through artists’ eyes – of the state-of-the-art today through paintings, sculpture, photographs, video and installations. The results of the Featured Artists contest were based on the judge’s extensive experience and knowledge of works that engage audiences with contemporary visual art, creative thinking, and most importantly; an educational component inspiring future generations. The presentation and technical merits of each entry were extremely important, as well as the quality of the work and the information provided in the application.

There is no doubt an artist grows by leaps and bounds when he or she puts artwork in the public eye for feedback, and that is what this art competitions is all about. History, patronage, commissions, and incredible opportunities have all been prizes afforded to winners of major art competitions. Big part of my dream is that IRREVERSIBLE Projects, Exhibitions And The Magazine further the reach and spectrum of opportunities available for an artist of any experience level and medium.

Join MANO Fine Art for their new exhibit “Meninas Unwrapped”, a nod to the popularity of Diego Velazquez’s ICONIC motif la menilna interpreted by artists Daniel Garcia and MANO. Velazquez would be pleased.

The interpretation of the world’s masterpieces is hardly a new phenomenon. Artists often look to the past to learn from the old masters. In “Some Are Meninas” contemporary artists: Daniel Garcia and MANO take on Diego Velazquez, interpreting his famed 1656 painting, “Las Meninas”, considered one of the greatest masterpieces ever painted.

The exhibit is not only a matter of looking back at the past but also a nod to the popularity of the iconic motif, it seems that every generation has made Velazquez’s “meninas” a reflection of their own, hundreds of artists from Picasso to Vik Muniz have been inspired by the works’ enigmatic qualities. Velazquez would be pleased

Swamptoberfest and People’s Choice Award at Swampspace Gallery on Wednesday, October 22, 2014.

The director of Swampspace, Oliver Sanchez announced the nomination of the gallery by the Knight Foundation to their People’s Choice Award, South Florida. The announcement is a welcomed recognition for the maverick artist run project space located in the Miami Design District for nearly a decade.

Swampspace was founded on the premise that promoting artistic values increases civility among diverse groups that make up our greater community. It presents monthly exhibitions ranging from visual arts and sculpture to theatrical performance and musical interludes. With nearly fifty exhibitions and critical acclaim, Swampspace is now recognized to be a place both sophisticated enough for arbiters of taste and unvarnished enough for the iconoclast.

The People’s Choice Award highlights small arts groups making a difference in South Florida. It’s part of the Knight Arts Challenge, a community-wide contest funding the best ideas for the arts. Winners of both the challenge and People’s Choice will be announced in December.

As a way to shine the spotlight on smaller groups, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is asking the public to vote by text for their favorite of the six nominees to determine the People’s Choice winner. To vote, the public can text the nominees individual code to 22333 in the U.S. or 747-444-3548 toll-free, through 11:59 p.m. Monday Nov. 17. The effort is part of the Knight Arts Challenge, which funds projects that bring South Florida together through the arts.

The Knight Arts Challenge is a South Florida-based initiative to draw the best and most innovative ideas out of local organizations and individuals seeking to transform the community through the arts. If you have a great idea in the arts, let us know. Take part in a community rising to new levels of artistic achievement and global recognition. In the last six years, 193 ideas were funded. Is this your year?

Four Seasons by Philip Haas in Pinecrest Gardens 11/15/14

Pinecrest, Fla. – Internationally-renowned contemporary artist and filmmaker Philip Haas will display his acclaimed FOUR SEASONS installation November 16th to April 6, 2015 in Pinecrest Gardens’ lush botanical sanctuary.

Consisting of four 15-foot-tall busts, Haas’s FOUR SEASONS bring 16th-century Renaissance portraiture by Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo into modern times through a transformation of scale, material and dimensionality.

While Arcimboldo’s paintings present each subject in profile, Haas’s unconventional twist on the classical form allows visitors the opportunity to walk around the sculptures, to see the subjects from all sides, and from many different and surprising vantage points.

Each work represents an individual season and is distinctly unusual and extravagant. AUTUMN is comprised of fall vegetables, ripe grapes and leaves turning color. Weathered bark and verdant moss make up WINTER’s stoic bust, which sits on top of a cloak of straw. SPRING evokes rebirth and vibrancy with a face consisting of rose-colored petals and hair brimming with elaborate flowers. SUMMER’s hue is a variety of sun-kissed yellows; its face and headdress sprout onions, garlic, corn, peas, a multiplicity of fruit, and a cucumber nose. The sculptures are made of pigmented and painted fiberglass, supported by interior steel frames.

“I started the FOUR SEASONS project wanting to bring Arcimboldo’s Renaissance painted nature imagery into the 21st-century physical world. I can’t think of a better venue than Pinecrest Gardens to inaugurate the Florida tour of this work, where the sculptures will arrive in the one of the oldest outposts of the New World, having fled their earlier homes as paintings in European museums, to now rest, and blend in, for an extended period amid the lush tropical flora, rock formations and historic water features,” said Haas.

In marrying sculpture, painting, film, and architecture, Philip Haas has created a contemporary visual vocabulary all his own. He describes his process as “sculpting by thinking”. His groundbreaking artwork has been featured by museums, including the National Gallery of Art (Washington DC), the Kimbell Art Museum (Fort Worth, Texas), Dulwich Picture Gallery (United Kingdom), and Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris). In the public realm, his work has been exhibited in the Piazza del Duomo (Milan) and the Gardens of Versailles (France). His feature films include ANGELS & INSECTS, THE MUSIC OF CHANCE and UP AT THE VILLA. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as other awards. He has taught in the visual arts and creative writing programs at Princeton University. He lives and works in New York and London.

FOUR SEASONS by Philip Haas is the latest commission of Pinecrest Garden’s art program.

MIAMI, FL – Local film lovers packed Miami Dade College’s Tower Theater this past weekend for the joyous new MIFFecito, the mid-season cinematic appetizer to 2015’s 32nd Miami International Film Festival’s (MiamiFF’s) main course taking place March 6-15, 2015. Festival organizers proclaimed the 4-day special prelude event to be successful beyond their expectations, with nonstop sold-out film screenings, exuberant visiting artists, and snazzy après-screening soirees. All MIFFecito screenings at the Tower Theater were generously presented by Viendomovies.

A jubilant MiamiFF Executive Director Jaie Laplante said, “Judging by the smile count, this autumnal run of MIFFecito was a programming initiative that truly paid off. It affirmed that the opportunity to deeply immerse one’s self in a rich, meaningful selection of superb new international cinema that is as yet undistributed in this country is profoundly desired. We’re thrilled and filled with anticipation for March!”

MIFFecito opened on Thursday, October 16th with Ernesto Daranas, the director of the sold out Opening Night film Behavior (Conducta), actor Hector Noas and the film’s art director Erick Grass, arriving for the film’s much anticipated red carpet premiere. Audiences had the pleasure of indulging in Latin treats from Tinta y Café’s pop-up café decorated with Las Tias furnishings in place just for MIFFecito. An electric question and answer session with the artists concluded the emotional Florida premiere of Behavior, and the festivities continued across the street at just-opened Ball & Chain, Little Havana’s retro, neo-Cuban hotspot which hosted MIFFecito’s Opening Night Party. Guests celebrated the electric night of live afro-Cuban sounds, gourmet Cuban tapas, and flowing libations from sponsors Bombay Sapphire and Stella Artois.

Friday night, MIFFecito kicked into full premiere gear, showcasing international hits by directors including Paco León with the North American premiere of Carmina and Amen (Spain),Matías Rojas Valencia withRoot (Chile),and director Sydney Sibilia’s I Can Quit Whenever I Want (Italy). Each filled-to-capacity premiere screened to laughing or deeply moved audiences.

Saturday afternoon, the festival changed gears to present an outstanding educational opportunity for the special master class The Art of Curation, presented by MiamiFF’s programming guru Thom Powers. Powers walked fascinated attendees through a process of engagement with audiences that goes far beyond simply choosing which movies to show. An intense discussion of connecting documentary cinema (Powers’ specialty) and audiences was opened up with the entire audience participating, with special discussion of Laura Poitras’ upcoming Citizenfour film used as a prime case study.

Saturday night, the evening crowds continued and the glamour unleashed, with cameras flashing as Mariana Chenillo, the director of Paradise (Mexico), and Roberto Sanchez, the lead actor of Lake Los Angeles (USA), appeared for the Florida premieres of their respective films. Also premiering that evening was Vara: A Blessing, directed by Bhutanese lama Khyentse Norbu, where guests were pleasantly surprised with an enchanting Bollywood dance team performance by Belly Motions.

Sunday afternoon, Moisés Kaufman, the celebrated director of The Laramie Project, was in attendance along with special guest moderator Dennis Scholl, Vice President of Arts for The Knight Foundation, for a very special retrospective screening of Kaufman’s groundbreaking film. Afterwards, an impassioned conversation ensued regarding the positive impact the film (and the original theater production) have had over the years since its 2002 debut. Kaufman took the opportunity to announce that, 23 years after forming his internationally celebrated Tectonic Theater Project in New York City, he will be forming a new Miami-based theater company with partners Gary Ressler and Michel Hausmann, in 2015.

The festival closed Sunday night with the East Coast U.S. premiere screening of director Emilio Martínez-Lázaro’s massive smash Spanish Affair (Ocho apellidos vascos), the all-time highest-grossing domestic film at the Spanish box office. Spanish Affair screened three times throughout MIFFecito, and every screening was sold out.

New Belgium Brewing’s annual Clips Beer & Film Tour is coming to Miami for the first time. Clips offers a venue where guests can try New Belgium’s most esoteric beer offerings, while watching short films created by New Belgium fans. Many of New Belgium’s Lips of Faith beers can be hard to come by and Clips offers the best way to try them. Up to 17 varieties from Lips of Faith to brewery classics will be on tap.

This beer-toting, film-traveling, nonprofit-benefiting show is going coast-to-coast hitting 21 cities in its fifth year with 100 percent of the proceeds from beer sales benefiting local nonprofits. Since its inception in 2010, Clips has raised close to $400,000 for nonprofits nationwide. Clips is a fundraiser for Urban Oasis Project – outside alcohol is not permitted.

New Belgium selects approximately 20 short films for the tour each season. All selected filmmakers for the 2014 tour receive a trophy-worthy beer in a custom screen-printed bottle, made exclusively for the winning submissions. This year, the chosen films include a banana with an attitude, ultra marathoners running with stubborn animals, neon spandex and much, much more! It’s a diverse and highly entertaining line-up with something for everyone.

“Clips is a great place to come together with friends and relax,” said Christie Catania, Clips National Special Events Manager. “It is an outdoor evening gathering, where you can connect with friends, watch films and enjoy good beers. One-hundred percent of proceeds from beer sales benefits your local nonprofit.”

Other tips:
Food is welcome; alcohol is not (leave that to us).
Bring low chairs or blankets – or lounge on the grass.
Entire families are welcome.
Bring your I.D. if you plan to sample beers!
Bring a water bottle – New Belgium gives away water for free.
Dogs are welcomed on a leash, under control, and by their owner’s side.
Please walk, ride a bike, carpool, or take public transportation!

History, poetry and tragedy collide when Roger Guenveur Smith tackles the thorny odyssey of Rodney King—deemed “the first reality TV star”— from the harsh initial glare of the national spotlight as the victim of police brutality to his involuntary martyrdom that ignited the L.A. riots to his lonely death at the bottom of a swimming pool. As with his previous triumphs at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, including The Watts Towers Project and Juan and John, Smith seamlessly fuses facts and friction, motion and emotion into a gripping narrative that poses impossible questions while illuminating his subject with grace and empathy.

Art Bastion Launches New Gallery In Wynwood
WHO/WHAT: International art agency and mobile gallery, Art Bastion, is planting local roots with the launch of a dedicated space in the Wynwood Arts District at 2085 NW 2nd Avenue.

Cuban-American artist Renelio Marin has been selected as the first artist exhibition. “I aim to use my art to reach a certain level of freedom for humanity and awaken consciousness,” explains Marin who has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. “I strive to elevate myself above and beyond the constrictions of my upbringing and break apart the limitations of the social cell I was tossed in at birth. Thus, I consider myself a modern artist in ethos and pathos, somebody who doesn’t belong to any social class or any political typecasting.”

Art Bastion was founded by internationally recognized art collector and curator, Sebastiano Varoli, with the mission of discovering and representing artists around the world and introducing their artwork to broader audiences. Varoli has collaborated with renowned art initiatives ranging from the Musée D’Orsay in Paris to the Royal Ballet in London and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.

In addition to showcasing thought-provoking artists, Art Bastion will offer multi-sensory experiences incorporating the art of sound, taste, touch and smell curated by the gallery’s director Alix Charoy. Art Bastion will also serve as an intimate space available for private bookings.

“While Art Bastion boasts strong artistic ties to Paris and New York, we chose to launch our first physical gallery space in Miami’s epicenter of art, fashion, design and food.” Explains Varoli who specializes in art consultation for buyers/sellers, managing collections and organizing “pop-up” exhibitions.

Since the agency began operations in November 2012, Art Bastion has helped and collaborated with artists, collectors, non-profit organizations and galleries around the world including; Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States.

Each year, in celebration of Art Basel Miami Beach, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University hosts Breakfast in the Park. This event draws hundreds of art enthusiasts, patrons, collectors, gallery owners and artists from around the world, many of whom are visiting Miami for Art Basel. Each year a noted sculptor is invited to speak. Guests enjoy a complimentary outdoor breakfast, informal lecture and guided tours of The Sculpture Park as well as the exhibitions in The Frost Art Museum.

This year’s speaker, Daniel Arsham is a contemporary American artist whose art blurs the lines between art, architecture and performance. He explores issues of natural versus manufactured or intention versus happenstance.

In 2003 Arsham graduated from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science in NYC and received the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award. Arsham’s work has always played with notions of architecture. His sculptures and installations make architecture do things that it is not supposed to do. It wrinkles and ripples, and appears to blow like a curtain, it confounds our notions of how architecture is made and used.

In 2008, Daniel Arsham and Alex Mustonen established Snarkitecture, a Brooklyn based art and design studio that creates everything from functional objects to installation to stage design. It is a collaborative practice that aims to make architecture perform the unexpected, focusing on the investigation of structure, material and program and how these elements can be manipulated to serve new and imaginative purposes. Snarkitecture has received many high profile commissions including the baseball stadium in Miami, Storefront in NYC and Design Miami 2012.

Arsham’s work has been shown at PS1 in New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, the MCA Chicago, Athens Biennial in Greece, The New Museum in New York, Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, California and Carré d’Art de Nîmes, France among others. Daniel Arsham’s artistic practice includes commissioned public art, performance and architectural projects including several high profile collaborations with choreographer Merce Cunningham, Producer Pharrell Williams, Dior Homme, Jonah Bokaer and Designer Hedi Slimane.

Daniel Arsham was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1980, was raised in Miami and currently lives and works in New York City.

Red Ribbon Ceremonies with the Honorable City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado for First Wynwood Visitor Information Stands 10/8/14

Red Ribbon Ceremonies with the Honorable City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado for First Wynwood Visitor Information Stands
October 8th, 2014 from 5:30pm to 6:00pm
wynwoodGallery 212 Wynwood
2407 NW 2nd Avenue
Miami, Florida 33127

The Art Experience, Inc. its first Visitors Information Stands in Wynwood with two visitor information stands opening to the public, this Wednesday, October 8th, 2014. One stand will be at the corner of 24th Street and NW 2nd avenue (adjacent to Panther Coffee) and the 2nd Stand at 25th Street and NW 2nd Avenue (adjacent to the Wynwood Walls).

Creative Founder Susana Baker launched The Art Experience, Inc. in 2009. A company specializing in Art and Culinary Tours for visitors and locals to experience the cultural side of Miami. To date with touring over 100 monthly visitors with its Signature VIP Tour: Dine Design Explore the Art, has earned the company a 5 star rating on trip advisor.

The Visitors Stands will be free to the public. All visitors wishing information on murals, galleries, cafes can receive the information for free from these stands. Maps will be handed out and orientation tours (available with a small donation) will be offered from the stands. All tours are accompanied with a Uniformed Tourator (trained as a tour guide in History and Curator trained in Arts).

After 3 years in business, it became apparent to Ms. Baker that every time she toured in Wynwood, visitors would approach her asking questions, or even following her on tours to learn about the different artists, murals and the history of Wynwood. “Most visitors GPS Wynwood or take a taxi to the area, but then they feel lost, walking around uncertain as to what they are viewing, and is there more, and where?” Says Susana Baker. “The saddest thing for me is that the visitors leave Wynwood without the full experience, story and the rich history of the area, including trivia facts of the murals and the artists. This is what our Tourators deliver to the visitor the total panoramic picture of Wynwood, which is filled with great history, amazing street art, and galleries! The tours can be done in Russian, Portuguese, French, Chinese and Spanish.

Gallery 212 will host along with The Art Experience a free Public Celebration, with Miami Club Rum sponsoring signature cocktails, The Riviera Foccaceria Italiana from Midtown will serve signature bites and live music. Join us for the official launch of Wynwood’s Visitors Information Center. City of Miami Mayor Regalado will be there to cut the ribbon along with other Community leaders. THE TRANSFORMATION:
It began in 2011 when OLCDC was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) “Our Town” Grant to create dynamic public art and engaging spaces to replace street barricades in the city’s most notorious neighborhood. OLCDC partnered with Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places to administer a call to artists, soliciting more than 200 responses from around the world. In Summer 2012, four artists/teams—Gale Fulton Ross, R & R Studios, Jennifer Bonner & Christian Stayner, and Walter Hood—were selected to begin work throughout the City of Opa-locka. They joined forces with renowned urban planners, landscape architects and project developers to implement the public art component of the redevelopment of Opa-locka, particularly in the Magnolia North neighborhood. Since then, the arts have been infused throughout the OLCDC’s revitalization efforts, from housing to infrastructure development to education and more.

ABOUT OPA-LOCKA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (OLCDC):
The Opa-locka Community Development Corporation (OLCDC) was established in November 1980 as a non-profit community development corporation in order to address the distressed unemployment conditions, particularly in the Opa-locka and North Dade County, Florida, communities. Its primary mission is to transform neighborhoods by capitalizing on community assets, empowering residents and creating community and economic initiatives that serve as a catalyst in promoting sustainable development. For more information about OLCDC, please visit www.olcdc.org.

Music by Jorge Vicens (DJ V)

Inspired by the sociological effects of the advertising world, David Gary Lloyd unfolds symbolic photographs to challenge the messages conveyed by mass marketing. Lloyd’s works communicate messages of religion in mainstream media, identity complications, human/nature sacrifice, and the effects of mass consumerism. David has also developed “Narrated Moments”, which relate positive outlooks and advice through the homeless, gypsies and street dwellers of Miami, who go against the common grain of society. David received diplomas in Photography and Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Exhibitions of his work have been held in Venues ranging from Miami, New York and Vermont. Lloyd currently lives and works from the eclectic art neighborhood Wynwood located in Miami. Alongside fellow photographer Michelle Citrin, David Co-owns the contemporary portrait studio Neox Image. http://DavidGaryLloyd.com/

After traveling significant distances, Michael Zimmerer began to see the world differently, especially the wilderness. It was no longer his childhood playground, a resource or a fantasy to explore; but environments that taught, learned and breathed on their own. In each of his projects he is not just documenting where he has traversed, but discovering and exploring what it means to be a place. He wants to encourage the viewer to reconsider their world, be it under the sky or inside their minds. His work is about seeing the world in a new way, not a new angle or a new development, but about vision and understanding. He wants to explore the Earth, and everything involved in it. Zimmerer’s work ranges from telling the story of an elegant land turned dark and decrepit, to the discovery of self, and how easily so many of us lose in ourselves that which seems impossible to really lose. In his images his goal is for people to find their roots in the world, and in themselves.

“Sea Shades”, a photographic series by Redinger-Libolt, the combined talents of Scott and Cristina Redinger-Libolt, explores the personality of our ocean as seen from Miami Beach and how it varies from day-to-day, minute-to-minute. Minimal and graphic compositions are employed in attempts to remove the photographer’s perspective and allow the sea it’s own voice, uniquely expressed in each photograph. Since moving to Miami Beach in 2009, Redinger-Libolt’s photographs have appeared in Ocean Drive, Miami Magazine, Interiors Magazine, Forbes, Conde Nast, Marie Claire and have exhibited photography at Miami Independent Thinkers Satellite Art Fair during Art Basel 2011. http://www.facebook.com/redingerliboltphoto

Miami’s Independent Thinkers is an organization dedicated to the unity, development and promotion of Miami’s flourishing art community. Our assemblage embraces established, emerging and young artists, visionaries and intellectuals. Our mission is to provide a sustainable support base for Miami’s creative community, including: painters, photographers, filmmakers, sculptors, animators, writers, musicians, performance and new media artists.

This October #MiamiCarnivalTurns30. To celebrate this milestone, the Miami Broward Carnival Committee Inc. has partnered with Pèrez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) to host a Carnival inspired kick-off event at the musuem(1103 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33130) to open the 2014 Miami Broward Carnival season. The event will feature a steel band performance, masquerade costume design workshop, and more on Thursday, October 2nd from 6:00pm-9:00pm. Models in traditional Caribbean style masquerade attire will greet guests as they enjoy the mesmerizing steel band music playing in the background. Guests will also be able to view Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico exhibit, the first major U.S. retrospective on Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, whose large-scale abstract paintings were inspired by the decorations of Carnival. One of #Miami Broward Carnival’s own masquerade bands will be leading the workshop on the history and design of traditional masquerade costumes.

South Florida’s diverse cultural makeup has allowed it to be a stage for showcasing and celebrating the unique traditions of its residents. The Miami Broward Carnival is one of the area’s largest annual events, drawing upwards of 30,000 participants and spectators each year.

“Serving Miami’s Caribbean community is part of PAMM’s core mission”, said PAMM Director Thom Collins. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the Miami Broward Carnival festivities this year and hope that our partnership will encourage even more members of Miami’s Caribbean community to visit the museum.” Works by Caribbean artists are on view throughout the museum as part of the permanent collection installations, and a solo show by Haitian-born, Miami-based Adler Guerrier is also currently on view. Prior to Beatriz Milhazes:  Jardim Botânico opening, the museum presented a major group show of works by Caribbean artists and hosted a kick-off for Caribbean American Heritage Month, a Caribbean video and film series, and a symposium relating to Caribbean art.

Miami Broward Carnival Chair Joan Hinkson addressed the new event saying, “Partnering with PAMM is the perfect way to celebrate 30 years of Miami Carnival as Miami Broward Carnival continues growing and sharing the exciting traditions of Caribbean culture with a larger, more diverse audience.”

About Pèrez Art Museum Miami
Pérez Art Museum Miami was originally founded as the Center for Fine Arts, and was strictly an exhibiting organization with no collection of its own. In 1996 the museum was renamed Miami Art Museum and dedicated itself to collecting and exhibiting international art of the 20th and 21st centuries with a special emphasis on art of the Americas. Since then, the collection has grown steadily across a range of media. The new Pérez Art Museum Miami in downtown Miami’s Museum Park strengthens the Museum’s role as a vital cultural and educational center. Opened as Pérez Art Museum Miami in recognition of a landmark gift of cash and art from Jorge M. Pérez —now valued at $40 million—the museum serves as a resource commensurate with Miami’s thriving community of artists, designers, collectors and arts-engaged public.

About Miami Broward Carnival
Held every year as a way to celebrate and share the Caribbean culture, the Miami Broward Carnival is heralded as one of South Florida’s top festivals, fostering community pride and civic involvement, and providing critical opportunities to the Caribbean people in South Florida to promote cultural exchange and build economic cooperation in the multi-cultural environment that is Miami. The Miami Broward Carnival will be held on October 12, 2014, at the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition, Inc. featuring the rich, bold and colorful costumes of the over 20 masquerade bands, the iconic parade, and a concert. Miami Broward Carnival has cultivated a significant niche of Caribbean cultural heritage within South Florida for the past 30 years. MiamiBrowardCarnival.com and hash tag #MiamiCarnivalTurns30

Life Is Art  presents Art/Work Connections Seminar 23: Financial Planning for Artists with Zak Mann at Bakehouse Art Complex on Tuesday, September 16, 2014.  Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This month we covered Financial Planning for Artists.

About Zak Mann:
Zak Mann is a financial representative at National Planning Corporation. With over ten years of experience in the industry, Zak’s practice focuses on income and asset protection for physicians, young professionals and multigenerational businesses. He lectures to resident programs throughout South Florida on the importance of early planning. In 2013 Zak was the top agent for his agency in Disability Insurance premiums.
Born and raised here in Miami, Zak is very involved in the community and is the current president of the Coral Gables Museum’s Young Associates, on the board of Mt Sinai Hospital’s foundation, a Miami Children’s Hospital Young Ambassador, and a founding executive committee member of the American Heart association Pulse. In his free time Zak enjoys fishing, competitive BBQing, and is a published photographer.

About Bakehouse Art Complex:
Since its inception, the Bakehouse Art Complex (BAC) has served as a creative incubator for more than a thousand emerging and mid-career artists. The Bakehouse offers more than just studio space. This dynamic artistic community is home to dozens of artists working side-by-side in every media imaginable in an environment where they share in each other’s creative processes and inspire, encourage and motivate one another.
The Bakehouse is also the perfect place to enjoy contemporary art in the making year-round, featuring 65 working artist studios, two galleries with monthly exhibition openings, classes, and working facilities, such as a fully functional print room, dark room, a woodworking area, welding room and ceramic kilns for artist use. Thanks to the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, BAC will create a ceramics studio and South Florida’s first community-accessible fine arts metal casting foundry in 2015. These areas provide Resident and Associate artists with in-house facilities to develop or to experiment and integrate new media into their work.
Open free 7 days per week, the Bakehouse offers patrons a rare glimpse into the creative experience and an opportunity to interact directly with a diverse and talented community of over 60 contemporary artists. With monthly exhibition openings, cultural and community events, classes for adults and children, and a soon-to-be-launched monthly Green and Art market, the BAC is not only a creative center, but also a vibrant community hub serving its artists, patrons, art buyers, and the South Florida community.

Sway Away and Convoluted Shape by Jamilah Sabur Opening Reception  at The Bakehouse Art Complex on Friday, September 12, 2014.

Sway Away exhibition is in the Audrey Love Gallery from September 10 – September 28.  “This show will feature two- and three- dimensional artworks representing the artists’ interpretation and capture of movement. Kinetic and site specific projects will be the focus creating a direct dialogue between science, physics and the arts.”

Convoluted Shape by Jamilah Sabur is in the Swenson Gallery from September 10 – October 18. “This exhibition studies the interdisciplinary uses of the body as a vehicle for expression. Jamilah Sabur opens the exhibition on September 12th with a multi-channel video installation and performance encompassing the interplay of inwardness and the secondariness of the audience through movement, concealment, obstacles and physical limitations as well as spontaneous and imperfect, sometimes comic, unrehearsed movements. The results illustrate the perverse rule the artist seems to have discovered: the less she can see, the more we, an audience, look.”

The Bakehouse Art Complex Mission:
“Enable and encourage artistic creativity through diversity and collaboration.  By providing affordable studio spaces for juried emerging and mid-career artists
Providing exhibition opportunities, educational and artist advancement programming, and common workshop spaces. Serve as a cultural hub providing a venue for performance and critical thought in Miami’s historic art deco bakery”

This visual story is one that has not yet been told. Not because there is no storyteller to tell it, but because it exists only in fragments each assuming its own autonomous existence removed from the constraints of mainstream history.

THIRD SPACE Inventing the Possible is the story of visual artists who defy their otherness and enter the realm of 21st century aesthetics not only to lay their historic claim on it, but also to challenge the framework which defines and polices its boundaries. This exhibition engages Miami artists in their articulations of the lines of continuities. What comes out is that we do not cease to be related simply because separated by race, nationality or color.

Celebrate the opening of Beatriz Milhazes: Jardim Botânico with live music by Alma Tropicalia and a waterfront bar on the terrace. Between sets enjoy Brazilian grooves from DJ Marcello Bentine.
The celebration features the Miami debut of Brazilian band Alma Tropicalia. The DC-based band reimagines the psych-samba sounds of 60’s tropicália music from Brazil, a mind-bending mix of tropical rhythms, soulful funk grooves and day-glo psychedelia that has quickly earned the group ecstatic reviews and packed performances across the region. The band’s daring lineup combines the masterful Brazilian jazz vocalist Elin (featured on Thievery Corporation’s Brazil-inspired album “Saudade”) with the unhinged experimentation of some of the top backing musicians in today’s rock and world music scene (featuring members of Cyro Baptista’s Beat the Donkey, Bio Ritmo, and more).

Tickets for loitering will not be issued here while this talented and playful street art team transforms the west-facing wall of 1909 Harrison Street in Downtown Hollywood in just a few weeks. The community welcomes Chaz and Bob Gibson, aka “The London Police”, to the neighborhood as the creators of the 12th DHMP wall mural. The community is looking forward to seeing the artful enhancement this British duo has in store. All are invited to join a “Live Painting Performance” with TLP at the mural site on Saturday night, September 27th from 7-10pm.

The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is successfully rounding its second year with an impressive roster of artists including Daniel Fila a.k.a. “Krave”, David “Lebo” LeBatard, Jessy Nite, Luis Pinto, Edward Mendieta, Ruben Ubiera, 2alas, Evoca1, Michelle Weinberg and Tati Suarez, all who have contributed amazing work to the community. Selected by a review committee, the project invites artists whose mural proposals promote health, happiness, and well-being.

When asked about the mural he and his partner are gearing up to begin next month, artist Chaz Gibson tells us, “We always try to project a positive theme in our pieces. Our signature characters have happy faces and are depicted doing everyday things in the world they live in. In this particular piece one of our characters is making adjustments to the aquarium he is looking after. As we are near the sea we threaded an aquatic theme with science and nature with an overall moral of looking after each other.”
The duo has clearly come up with a mural concept that speaks to Hollywood and incorporates attributes that this community can connect with. “We love the idea of the aquatic theme and the fact that the mural will promote togetherness. That is what Hollywood is all about and The London Police really get that about us”, remarks Lisa Liotta, Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency’s Operations Manager.
Since inception, The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project has garnered the attention of locals, visitors and art enthusiasts alike. Giselle Perez, a realtor in Miami comments on her experience, “The live mural painting events are really quite awesome to attend! No two events have been similar and each artist brings their own vibe. My friends and I come up from Miami for a bite to eat at one of the eclectic eateries on Hollywood Blvd. or Harrison Street. We pop into a few of the crafty boutiques and art galleries and really enjoy walking the streets to see the mural walls throughout the downtown. Often times, the artists have added or change something, which is always a nice surprise! The live mural performances are really fun to attend. Meeting new people who have an appreciation for art and community is always a good time!”

About -UOM-
UOM was originated in early 2007 as a multi-disciplinary project with emphasis in non- traditional, Vintage and electronic instruments, and performance technique.
-UOM- primal energy is often in direct superposition with more sophisticated forms of sound production, such as cutting edge real-time recording and looping and the use of current and vintage electronics.
This all-embracing approach has taken the project through a path of collaboration with the visual and performing arts. We have performed in Art Centers and galleries, during exhibition openings and artists performances. We have improvised music during video installations, contemporary dance performances and played in artist-designed sets.

About Edilberto Aponte
My pieces evoke critical views of social, political and cultural issues. I journal my life’s perspectives and experiences in pencil, ink, and paint-using the canvas as an abstract mirror to reflect my mental images and convey my emotions. The communion of words, lines, or shapes meld on canvas into one-becoming the allusion of my personal reality.
My art consist of abstract drawings in pencil, color, acrylic and ink. My anxious imagination has been inspired by nostalgic memories of my poignant life events, native metropolis of San Juan Puerto Rico and South Florida.

About Marcelo Salup
1. Began professionally as a concert photographer for Vibraciones magazine in Madrid, Spain.
2. Switched to international advertising and lived in half a dozen cities: Madrid, London, New York, Mexico City, Santo Domingo, San Juan and Buenos Aires
3. Specialize in portrait photography

About David Martins
I was born in Boston, then raised mostly in Miami.I am currently in school to become an anthropologist with my main focus on shamanic studies. I chose this path because I love to learn and teach and therefore enjoy studying the original teachers; the shamans from around the world. I have been drawing, sketching, and painting my whole life. My art has always been and always will be a way for me to record the path of my thoughts and feelings at any particular point in life. My pieces are reflections of symbols and archetypes that connect us all. Creations that speak to the subconscious mind as well as the vibratory senses

Miami DWNTWN Art Days
September 19-21, All Day
dwntwnartdays Downtown Miami
Website
Facebook

Art Days is designed to bring together and promote the cultural community, in addition to facilitating and incentivizing art exhibitions and other cultural activities. In its third year, Art Days, supported by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), continues to provide free inspiring art activities across the Downtown cultural landscape. Working in partnership with a variety of arts and culture institutions, organizations and artists, Art Days is a three-day cultural exploration that incorporates countless free events and exhibitions for the community to experience and enjoy. Art Days offers something for everyone from family activities, panel discussions, international exhibitions, bike tours, walking tours and so much more!

Art Days is comprised of three components:
The Hub
located at MCAD, 100 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL 33132
The “hub” is the epicenter for information on Art Days. In 2013 over 130 events took place around Downtown Miami, so it’s worthwhile to take a moment and set an itinerary to make the most out of the weekend!
The hub is the place to…
…find someone to help you navigate through the vast amount of things to do.
…start most walking and bike tours.
…be creative and paint your own unique t-shirt.
…hang out and connect with your friends on social media.
…find people to welcome you to Downtown Miami.

The Fringe
The “Fringe” is a set of curated activations of Downtown Miami in the form of visual and performance art projects. The visual art projects are commissioned, site-specific public art installations, curated by a specialist contemporary art curator Amanda Sanfilippo, and located within a one-mile radius around the Hub for easy walkability. This year’s Fringe has been initiated in partnership with Miami Dade County’s Art in Public Places.

The Events
Throughout the three day weekend, over 60 different art organizations, culture organizations, non-profits and artists activate their spaces with exhibitions, performances, cocktails meet and greet, art talks, panels and more. New for 2014 is an increased family friendly programming and children activities to accommodate the growing number of families living in Downtown.
Realizing the lack of performing arts in last year’s mix of events, the Miami DDA, in collaboration with the Olympia Theatre, is debuting a series of performance pieces in public areas and venues all around Downtown
As a guideline, here is a schedule for the weekend:
Thursday: Media/VIP Preview of the Fringe and Art Days
Friday: School tours/ Exhibitions openings/ post -work cocktail activities
Saturday: Museum day; art tours and exhibitions
Sunday: Cultural activities/bike tours

Each month, Life Is Art brings the community together at our River Of Art pop-up art-in-public-places show to socialize through the power of the arts with the goal of exposing new artists, introducing new people to art appreciation, providing an inspiring space to make new connections, showcasing local businesses and charities, while providing a fun break during the work week. Cocktail Collection is providing a complimentary welcome drink and light bites!  The modest $10 door fee goes to support Life Is Art’s mission.

Art is an inspiring talking point, discussing it is a great way to break the ice. Culture is one of the primary elements that build community and hosting a business networker within an art show is a unique way to encourage socializing, so be sure to bring plenty of business cards and an open mind!

About -UOM-
UOM was originated in early 2007 as a multi-disciplinary project with emphasis in non- traditional, Vintage and electronic instruments, and performance technique.

About DOC IT! Detect Ovarian Cancer in Time
DOC IT’s primary mission is to help find a screening test and/or cure for ovarian cancer. Our proceeds go to medical facilities dedicated to hoping that one day soon we can create proper screening for ovarian cancer, because unfortunately pap smears and regular GYN check-ups usually do not detect it until is too late. As a matter of fact, ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among American women.

Tongue and Cheek will be providing complimentary tastings and 10% off dinner after the show! The modest $10 door fee goes to support Life Is Art’s mission.

Art is an inspiring talking point, discussing it is a great way to break the ice. Culture is one of the primary elements that build community and hosting a business networker within an art show is a unique way to encourage socializing.

Tastings

Quesadilla of braised short rib, bacon fat black beans, avocado, crème fraiche

Monique Lassooij
Monique Lassooij was born and raised in The Netherlands and moved several years ago to Miami, Florida. Her paintings hang in numerous private collections in the US and abroad. Ms. Lassooij finds her inspiration in colors and how those colors affect the subject whether she is painting on canvas, wood or a wall. Her subjects are often not placed within a context-giving background, allowing a single or combination of colors and geometric shapes to illuminate the chosen topic.

Judith Mistor
Ms. Mistor has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from the University of Detroit and Marygrove College, and is the Ceramics/Sculpture teacher at a private secondary school in Miami, Florida. She is an associate artist at the Bakehouse Art Complex, also in Miami, and an artist member of the Detroit Artist’s Market. She also has membership in the NAEA (National Art Educator’s Association). Ms. Mistor’s exhibition credits include: University of Detroit, Marygrove College (Detroit, Michigan), Detroit Artist’s Market, Gallery 24 (Bal Harbour, Florida), Brockway Memorial Library (Miami Shores, Florida), Mid-Hudson Arts and Sciences (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), One Biscayne Tower (Miami, Florida), Bakehouse Art Complex (Miami, Florida), Kavachnina Contemporary Gallery (Miami, Florida), Sculpt Miami (Art Basel satellite fair in Wynwood Arts District, Miami, Florida), Violeta’s (Coral Gables, Florida), Best Sculpture Award in the Pembroke Pines Ninth Annual Juried Competition (Pembroke Pines, Florida), the Garden Building in Miami Design District, and Miami Country Day School, where she created two permanent ceramic installations. Her work is also in a number of private collections.

Alejandro Cuadra
Alejandro is a Costa Rican born Fine Artist and Graphic Designer who is currently living in South Florida. When he moved to Florida he obtained an Associate’s Degree in Art and Art Education from the Miami-Dade College and a Bachelor in Graphic Design from Miami International University of Art and Design, but to a large degree his education is a self-taught. He is an artist who enjoys working with different media, among them: color pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, watercolor, oil, acrylic paint and photography and digital art. Alejandro currently works as a graphic designer and as a freelance artist and illustrator. His art is a mixture of dreams and surrealistic memories. Alejandro uses art to express his inner feelings through enigmatic images. Among the themes that he prefers to create are fantastic scenes, science fiction concepts, religious ideas, collages, childhood memories, figure drawing, surrealistic landscapes, and artwork of animals and nature.

L’éléphant dans la Salle- (The Elephant in the Room) is an idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored, or otherwise unaddressed. The purpose of this exhibit is to provide a safe place for issues and topics that are normally hidden from public view.

Through visual and performance art, the artists participating in this event will share secrets and taboos, discussing openly to find solutions for our own individual and collective emancipation. Viewers are invited to enter the ‘Confessional’, an interactive safe space installation to share their ‘elephant’.

L’elephant dans La Salle will be hosted by 2 of 1310 Gallery resident artist Niki Lopez (visual artist & designer), and Alana DaCosta, (singer/songwriter).

L’éléphant dans la Salle:

Some may chose to never understand it,” says DaCosta. “Yet, we all have the power of choice to free ourselves of whatever makes us uncomfortable.”

“It’s about acknowledging it, owning it, so that it doesn’t define you.” Says Lopez, an artist with her own elephant that will be revealed at the exhibit.

Lopez & DaCosta asks the public to participate by submitting their unspoken truth AND use the hashtag #whatsyourelephant on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram to submit their unspoken truth.

Photographs of Life Is Art presents Art/Work Connections #21 Understanding Grants for Artist with Joshua Kingston at Eleazar Delgado Studio on 7/15/14

Life Is Art  presents Art/Work Connections #21: Understanding Grants for Artist with Joshua Kingston at Eleazar Delgado Studio Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This month we covered  Understanding Grants for Artist.

About Joshua Kingston:
Joshua Kingston was raised in a military family, moving often and quickly learned to adapt and connect with people. He studied Theater, Music and Literature in college and has worked as a Vet Tech and a Software Developer before settling in to his true calling, writing. Always feeling the need to have more knowledge, he went back to school to obtain a Masters in Theology.

Today, he writes helps artists verbalize their art into statements and galleries develop catalog material while his passion is the challenge of grant writing for both individual artists, projects, and small/mid-sized Arts organizations.

About Eleazar Delgado Studio:
Originally conceived at our home, Eleazar Delgado Studio has always been the artist’s creative space. The idea grew into a gathering place for our friends, mostly artists in their own rights, to showcase their current work and preview concepts. We made it official in 2010 when we opened a public space in Wynwood. Today in addition to being Eleazar’s personal art studio, we host local talents and leaders who need a professional environment to showcase, educate, and enrich the community at large.

About the Art/Work Connections Program
The Art/Work Connections program is a monthly series of business seminars held at galleries and art spaces around South Florida targeted at artists and those working in the arts. A free event held at Viophilia on Saturday, July 19th 2014 for artists and creatives of all ages and mediums to come together and paint the night away. We set up the perfect environment to generate collaborative work by hanging large scale wood panels and canvases around the room and then covering the floors and walls for easy cleanup. Supply stations are set up with paints, brushes, water, palettes, and paper towels for artists to use throughout the evening.

The goal is to make connections and bonds within the creative community through synergetic expression. Throughout the evening, masters mix with amateurs, curators blend with observers and even non-artists are inspired to participate. By breaking down the individual roles of artist, spectator and consumer the environment influences the final work through a collaborative experience.

This fundraising network event is the brainchild of Rebecca Ott & Gena Rumble. We recently had the pleasure of meeting Lorna Owens a renowned midwife, nurse, & attorney who created the Footprints Foundation. Owens has spent her life working with and behalf of women, first as a health care provider and then as a legal advocate and firebrand.

“We believe any model designed to help women must include a reduction in maternal and infant mortality, education, entrepreneurship and advocacy.”

The Footprints Foundation is working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somaliland, Jamaica, & Florida City to:
-Reduce maternal and infant mortality in low income communities
-Fight teenage pregnancy
-Campaign against female genital mutilation

We hope you make it out to support this great cause, buy some rad jewelry for you and yours, & get to know PI professionals in the greater south Florida area invested in maintaining exceptional ethics.

Just don’t wear your most expensive White Attire since we intend to turn it into a Masterpiece for you to take home… YOU BE THE CANVAS!
