Miami Dance Festival 2014 celebrates its 11th edition in honor of dance as an art form while encouraging innovation and presenting a diverse palette of dance works in an array of genres and styles. This year, the Festival will consist of eight events and one panel discussion (one of the events to be announced in March) with some of the nation’s most talented industry leaders. Established by the Founder & Artistic Director of Momentum Dance Company, Delma Iles, the Festival is a combined effort of her dance company and other dance companies such as The PGK Dance Project (San Diego, CA). Their combined mission is to move and inspire attendees with newly choreographed performances as well as the classics.

Momentum Dance Company will again perform last year’s hit High Tide, choreographed by Delma Iles. The jazzy, modern work demands high energy and stamina from Momentum’s dancers with fast footwork, unusual jumps and lifts as well as constant changes of direction. It premiered last February at the West Florida Dance Festival and made its Miami premiere on Momentum’s 2013 Spring Season at the Colony Theater.

Soloist Emily Noe is expanding her untitled work from last season to include a larger group of dancers, playing with ideas of ghosts and illusion. The exquisite music by Scriabin will be played by Dr. Alan Ngim, one of Iles’ colleagues at the Miami Dade College Department of Arts and Philosophy.

This year’s historic modern dance work is To the West, by modern dance pioneer Eleanor King. This powerful solo will be performed by Momentum veteran and principal dancer Barbie Freeman. It evokes a mountainous western landscape with high cliffs, and deep rivers. The human being is dwarfed and awed by its grandeur, but persists with a courageous pioneering spirit as she makes her way in this glorious new territory. Freeman is being coached by Dr. Andrea Seidel of FIU, who learned the work directly from its creator. King’s work is currently enjoying a renewed interest from dance writers and historians. The original piano score will also be played by guest artist Dr. Alan Ngim.

“Our goal is to showcase dance as an accessible art form,” Says Miami Dance Festival Founder Delma Iles. “We hope to inspire and move our festival goers through the movement of our incredibly talented dancers and industry heroes.”

San Diego’s The PGK Dance Project is known worldwide for their stunning, athletic performances, beautifully sculpted, well-crafted works by a variety of commissioned choreographers ranging from Contemporary/Modern, to Dance/Theatre to Contemporary Ballet. The company’s Miami debut will feature its 6 well trained dancers in new works by Geoffrey Gonzalez (formerly of Rasta Thomas’ Bad Boys of Ballet), Donna Scro’s ‘Butt Rock’ inspired by the driving rock music of Dreamscape Theater ,(formerly of Nikolais/Louis) Kahmla Somphanh’s newest creation built around chaos and paranoia (formerly of ODC/DanceSF), Anjanette Maraya-Ramey’s ‘NO EXIT’ inspired by the writings of Jean Paul Sartre, Michael Nickerson-Rossi’s stunning work ‘Teetering’ (Nickerson-Rossi Dance, Philadelphia/LB), and Peter Kalivas’ ‘Tabla’, a thrilling duet for two men and ‘Stifling’ his signature solo work making its Miami debut performed by Heather Dale Wentworth. Momentum dancers invite the audience members to read poems by local poets that are written directly on to their bodies. The dancers’ movements show the audience the sequence of the poems. Poems curated by MDC faculty member Michael Hettich. This event is also part of the Department of Arts and Philosophy Arts and Letters Week activities.

April 27 at 3:00 p.m. – Afternoon of the Phoenix at Performing Art Network (PAN) Grand Re-Opening Celebration. (13146 West Dixie Hwy, North Miami) (Free Admission)
Afternoon of the Phoenix is a collage of performances in Dance, Music and Theatre from some of South Florida’s finest performing artists and companies. Like the legendary Phoenix, this North Miami treasure again rises from the ashes of the fire that virtually destroyed their facilities. As dancers, musicians, actors and mimes entertain and inspire you with samples of their work, food and drink will be provided by some of North Miami’s favorite restaurants.
Dance Now! Ensemble, Momentum Dance Company, Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, Kuyayky, Harmonic Motion, Children’s African Dance Company, Miami Urban Dance, Tango Axis and Voices United along with individual artists Nina Martin, Lela Lombardo, Pioneer Winter, Lara Tinari, Juan Maria Seller, Effy Polizogopoulus, Amy Deer, Lucian Williams and Eusebio Perez are just a few of the professional artists that have taught, rehearsed and performed at PAN throughout the years. In “Afternoon of the Phoenix”, they contribute their talents and energy to make this day an unforgettable experience of art and culture — giving students, audiences and artists an exciting glimpse into PAN’s future.

Artists from the U.S, Latin America and Spain, led by the world renowned master teacher, choreographer, soloist and Artistic Director Ilisa Rosal, bring to this production the spellbinding and earthy power of Flamenco dance at its best. With its spectacular footwork, precise athleticism and vibrant energy, Flamenco is at once sensual and spiritual, raw and refined, and filled with both restrained passion and electrifying release, making it a powerful and passionate evening. This production will incorporate live music, created and arranged by guitarists El Sivi and Alex Jordan, along with singer Almudena from Spain, in collaboration with company dancers and choreographers. Choreography will include collaboration with legendary flamenco soloist and choreographer, Manolete, Artistic Director of La Chumbera, International Flamenco School in Granada, Spain. Ritmo y Pasion will delight the audience with pure Flamenco music and dance, in a range of rhythms and styles that will take you through dramatic, soulful, joyous, sensual and passionate moods with powerful vocals, electrifying footwork, and all of the grace and beauty that has made Flamenco so loved by audiences throughout the world. The excitement of authentic Flamenco will have you screaming “ole” and clapping with the rhythm.

ABOUT: Fame, starring Debbie Allen, tells the story of young performers studying at New York’s High School of the Performing Arts. Students from Miami’s own Fame school, New World School of the Arts, will be on hand to talk about their experiences and aspirations.

Join us Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3, 7:30pm at the Miami City Ballet Ophelia and Juan Js. Roca Center, Lynn and Louis Wolfson, II Theatre when Miami City Ballet School – the official school of Miami City Ballet – holds special benefit performances by the recently formed MCB School Ensemble – a new 30-member performing troupe comprised of tomorrow’s stars of ballet. Tickets to the MCB School Ensemble Benefit cost $50 for Patron Level and $100 for Benefactor Level. The Ensemble, plus 20 additional Pre-Professional Division dancers, will perform George Balanchine’s ethereal Serenade, Marius Petipa’s beloved Sleeping Beauty, Act III, and two new ballets by former stars of Miami City Ballet – The Sunshine State by Gerard Ebitz, and Luna Del Mar by Maribel Modrono.

MCB School Ensemble was launched by School Director Darleen Callaghan in November 2013 to provide Pre-Professional Division dancers with invaluable live performance opportunities and to further enhance the artistic growth of its students. Some of these gifted young dancers were even seen on stage during the Company’s recent performances of Don Quixote. In addition, the Ensemble now anchors MCB’s signature youth outreach program Ballet For Young People and members of the troupe serve as ambassadors to the Company and School.

All Patron and Benefactor tickets include access to a Post-Performance Reception in the lobby featuring complimentary wine and dessert bar. VIP ticketholders also receive reserved seating and a Pre-Show Meet & Greet at 6:30pm with School Director Darleen Callaghan and two dancers from the Ensemble.
