What started out as a blog that celebrated life in the Wynwood neighborhood, has organically evolved into a festival that’s poised to raise the bar on all the things that Miami loves –art, music, fashion and food! Wynwood Life will take place in the hip Wynwood district on 6th Avenue, between 22nd and 24th Streets, from April 25th-27th.

Trek6, the celebrated artist who has become synonymous with the area one wall at a time, will commemorate the festival by designing and painting the inaugural poster and wall. “The walls of Wynwood are intrinsic to this community, which is why we wanted to build a wall specifically for Trek6 to paint. That finished wall will be taken apart, brick by brick, and the first 350 posters will come with one of the numbered bricks from that one-of-a-kind work of art,” said Tony Albelo, festival organizer. The idea behind this festival stemmed from the need to give local artists, craftsmen and designers the representation that they deserved by giving them a platform to showcase their creations.

Organizers expect thousands of people over the course of the three-day event. Top area vendors and artists, many of whom have been in some of Miami’s most respected graffiti crews, have signed up to be a part of this event, which will offer art, crafts, jewelry, fashion and food.

Kicking off the musical line-up on Friday night will be Congolese-Belgian hip-hop artist Baloji, who was brought to Miami and the Festival by MDC Live Arts. Other bands and Djs are scheduled to perform from one of two stages throughout the weekend. Ticket holders have the option of buying a VIP ticket, which would give them access to the Blue Moon VIP Lounge – an oasis in the festival with lounge seating and VIP view of the main musical stage. The Peroni Fashion Runway will feature several Miami stylists and bloggers showcasing “festival fashion” on Friday and Sunday night. On Saturday, the Peroni Art & Fashion Runway Show will take over, and guests can stroll into the Peroni Style Lounge to talk one-on-one with fashion experts.

In addition, Wynwood area restaurants will be on hand to sell their fare throughout the entire weekend.

Unity Coalition|Coalicion Unida’s annual fundraiser event, benefiting LGBT Scholarships & year round programming.
Premium Open Bar, Amazing hors d’oeuvres, Live music, Dance and Theatre, Fashion and Fabulousness

The heyday of live theatre, performances & movies at the Miami, Carib, Lincoln, Las Mascaras and many more are long gone in South Florida. Others like the Coconut Grove, Olympia and even Jackie Gleason have unsure futures ahead of them. Many of the marquees now promote retailers, restaurants, for lease…or simply are gone. The Famous, once a thriving restaurant in the 40’s on Washington Avenue with female impersonators serving, singing & dancing – gone. Lucky Cheng’s, Mulberry St. & the Candlelight – all gone. So what happened to the glitz and glamour of South Florida’s performance spaces? Where did all the talent go? Did we run out of gays to direct, dress, powder & paint? Are the rainbow lights in South Florida dimmed forever?

Don’t count us out just yet.

South Florida is thriving with LGBTQ talent, venues and creative minds to fill any stage offered to it, and Unity Coalition|Coalicion Unida’s Leaders, Legends & Lovelies (LL&L) Series is celebrating them all this April. With a theme of PRIDE in the ARTS, the annual Exhibit, Lectures & Legends Ball – complimenting Miami Beach Gay Pride festivities, highlights the good and positive in our LGBTQ community.

Partnering once again with the Miami Design Preservation League, the LL&L exhibit & lectures on theatre, costume & design will be held this coming April 12 & 13, 2014 at the Art Deco Welcome Center – free & open to the public. A myriad of talents, genres and styles will be explored and presented at the Leaders, Legends & Lovelies Exhibit, Lectures and Legends Ball. This year we are proud to partner with the Anita Priest Whispering Angels Foundation to offer an LGBTQ Scholarship in the Arts, Design & Education. The 2014 recipient will be announced at the Legends Ball on April 9th.

Celebrating the good, positive & outstanding within our LGBT community, the Unity Coalition|Coalición Unida (UC|CU) LEADERS, LEGENDS & LOVELIES Lectures, Exhibits & Legends Ball strive to focus on just that – Bringing lecturers from all walks of life in the LGBTQ & friends of community, the events focus on the similarities rather than the differences we all share, and how we can inspire others to do good, excel, be proud of who they are & just be better people. Our work is 100% funded by events & private donations, and we are 100% staffed & managed by volunteers. Everything that comes in, goes right back out for programming, leading & assisting our LGBTQ community.

Isaiah Mustafa, “The Old Spice Guy”, and Old Spice are going on the road across the U.S. on a “Smellcome to Manhood” tour to further Old Spice’s “scent responsibly” mission, which aims to end the overspraying epidemic once and for all.

Overspraying continues to be a major issue in the U.S. According to a recent national Old Spice survey, 90 percent of students (male and female) have been bothered by too much body spray at school. Even more revealing – 68 percent of young guys say they were not properly taught how to use body spray.

At 1:30 p.m., Old Spice will host a pop-up pep rally at the University of Miami with a live performance by the Sunsations, UM’s resident dance team, product giveaways and selfie photo opps with Mustafa.

A former wide receiver for the NFL, Mustafa gained sudden and substantial fame as the result of his Old Spice viral/TV campaigns, which garnered hundreds of millions of online hits and transformed Mustafa into a widespread sensation that culminated in an Emmy win for “Best TV Commercial.” In January 2014, Mustafa made his triumphant return as “The Old Spice Guy” for a series of digital “Internet-ventions”, designed to end the most embarrassing male mistakes.

So, come one, come all – for a day of great food, great music, and even better company! Whether you’re a fresh face who has always wanted to get involved or an original Occupier who was there from the beginning, you won’t want to miss this! Bring a dish, a picnic blanket, musical instruments, your ideas, your energy, or just your smile. Like the Occupy Movement itself, this event is what you make it. So, let’s make it one to remember. The event is open to all ages.

Records stores may continue to dwindle in number and vinyl may be going the way of polar ice caps, but that cannot stop the growing international phenomenon that is Record Store Day. This year, the wax aficionado holiday lands on April 19th and one of Miami’s top live music venues Grand Central will host an event to honor Miami’s great music mom and pop shops and chains past, as well as some of the more prominent acts to emerge from the area, including Nuclear Valdez, Charlie Pickett, Jim Camacho of The Goods and Forget the Name – all for a great cause.

“It’s ironic that as the number of records stores continues to fall, Record Store Day continues to gain more momentum,” says event co-organizer and music business mainstay Alex Jimenez. “I’m excited not only about continuing the legacy established by notable record stores like Peaches Music, Specs Music, Q Records, Yesterday & Today Records, Open Books & Records, Blue Note Records and others, but to help raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s disease and research.”

Jimenez was in part inspired by former Peaches executive and colleague Alan Jackowitz’s diagnosis and subsequent struggle with Parkinson’s.

Nuclear Valdez rose to regional and national acclaim in the late 80’s with the release of I Am I on Epic and the radio and MTV hit “Summer.” Axe man Charlie Pickett’s band The Eggs were hailed by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke as a “brawling-roots mix of Johnny Thunders, Sun Records and trailer park Lou Reed” and by R.E.M.’s Peter Buckas “one of the undiscovered giants of the late eighties.”

Singer / songwriter / playwright Jim Camacho first came to regional and national prominence with The Goods, who were signed to Polygram Records and were featured in the music doc Tom Dowd and the Language of Music. Forget the Name enjoyed a nine-year run during the late 80s and early 90s, developed a strong following in Miami, toured the east coast and released three full-length albums of material.

There will be a special music photography digital expo curated by yet another music insider, photographer and Dig Under Rock blog head Tony Landa. The works of Jill Khan, Mindy Hertzon, Karen Widen, Laura Kokus andTeajay Smith will be shown throughout the event.

A record collector’s “swap meet” will kick off the event with top dealers offering highly prized collectibles. “This sort of blows up the concept of the Saturday morning swap meet at an area hotel conference room bringing it into an environment that really suits it well,” states Jimenez. Interested record dealers please email alejim@aent.com to reserve your table now.

Artist Statement:
My passion for the Early Renaissance relates to the artists’ uses of profiles to depict these ladies in what they considered a modest and befitting pose; and the fact that these portraits were usually kept wrapped in fabric, and put away only to be viewed by a selective audience. When I work on the Early Italian Renaissance women, it is all about their serene demeanor. I refrain from the use of texture, and they are done as monochromatic drawings using only Indian Ink and a splash of Cuban coffee for color. The coffee is usually used as a symbolic veil that covers the lady, like the cloth on which these portraits were wrapped during the 1400s.

In the case of the Spanish Baroque ladies, their cage-like costumes, so befitting of the roles of women during this time, provoke me. In those paintings I tend to exaggerate their attire and cage-like effect of both their hair and dresses and often get carried away with their stories. I use tremendous amounts of texture and color to execute these paintings.

11th Annual Miami Dance Festival 4/5/14-5/15/14

11th Annual Miami Dance Festival
danceApril – May 15, 2014
momentumdance.com
Full Schedule

Miami Dance Festival 2014 celebrates its 11th edition in honor of dance as an art form while encouraging innovation and presenting a diverse palette of dance works in an array of genres and styles. This year, the Festival will consist of eight events and one panel discussion (one of the events to be announced in March) with some of the nation’s most talented industry leaders. Established by the Founder & Artistic Director of Momentum Dance Company, Delma Iles, the Festival is a combined effort of her dance company and other dance companies such as The PGK Dance Project (San Diego, CA). Their combined mission is to move and inspire attendees with newly choreographed performances as well as the classics.

Momentum Dance Company will again perform last year’s hit High Tide, choreographed by Delma Iles. The jazzy, modern work demands high energy and stamina from Momentum’s dancers with fast footwork, unusual jumps and lifts as well as constant changes of direction. It premiered last February at the West Florida Dance Festival and made its Miami premiere on Momentum’s 2013 Spring Season at the Colony Theater.

Soloist Emily Noe is expanding her untitled work from last season to include a larger group of dancers, playing with ideas of ghosts and illusion. The exquisite music by Scriabin will be played by Dr. Alan Ngim, one of Iles’ colleagues at the Miami Dade College Department of Arts and Philosophy.

This year’s historic modern dance work is To the West, by modern dance pioneer Eleanor King. This powerful solo will be performed by Momentum veteran and principal dancer Barbie Freeman. It evokes a mountainous western landscape with high cliffs, and deep rivers. The human being is dwarfed and awed by its grandeur, but persists with a courageous pioneering spirit as she makes her way in this glorious new territory. Freeman is being coached by Dr. Andrea Seidel of FIU, who learned the work directly from its creator. King’s work is currently enjoying a renewed interest from dance writers and historians. -Christopher Koulouris, scallywagandvagabond.com

“COCKTALES – Confessions of a Nymphomaniac,” is a play created by Tjasa Ferme, incubated at New York’s Chelsea district’s the cell, A Twenty First Century Salon. A two-woman farce with a three-man parade, COCKTALES follows Eve’s escape from the Garden of Eden to Dr. Truth’s TV show where she begs Dr. Truth to treat her predilection for erection. The reluctant analyst forces Eve to look her own twisted sexuality in the eye.

Erica Guzman / Aragon 101

Aragon 101 is the home decor boutique and cooking school located in the heart of Coral Gables. Chat Chow TV sat down with owner Erica Guzman to learn more about the store and its popular cooking classes.

“The idea behind the store is merging the idea cuisine and home decor,” Guzman notes. “We focus a lot on table top and how you can have a great meal with the perfect ambiance.”

The cooking classes are held once a week for a group of 14 “students” of all varying levels. The classes are as interactive as attendees want them, with some people getting highly involved while others just want to watch and enjoy their meal.

“People come in here and can be part of it but not really be in the kitchen,” Guzman says. “And there is another set of people that come here and want to be involved and get their hands dirty. We welcome both.”

Aragon 101’s cooking classes showcase cuisine from all over the world using a variety of talent to conduct the classes including notable chefs, caterers, and chocolatier’s, depending on the class theme. Some popular recent themes have been recipes based out of the popular “Jerusalem” cookbook and a Moroccan dinner.

Find out more about the store and the classes, including how to sign up for one yourself, in the video above.

A typical overprotecting mother “returns” to life to confront her son when he is about to make one of the most important decisions of his life. In the ensuing dialogues, full of humor, amply intrinsic contradictions are reflected between what is traditionally and die-hardly expected from the offspring and a prevailing dissimilar reality.

The commute is one of few things in life that every single one of us experiences. It might be by car a hundred miles across the region, or a ride on the rail, or by bike or on foot or just across the house to a laptop— but we all have to get to work, and most of us spend an unfortunately large amount of time doing it. There’s a lot we can do in the long term to improve how we get around, but in the short term most of us can’t change how long it takes. So instead, we’re asking: How might we create more delightful moments during our commutes?

Join us for a community discussion and brainstorming session at Miami Light Project in Wynwood. We’ll hear from some fellow locals about their commute experiences, hear two experts share examples from other cities, and work together in small groups to create innovative ideas for making our commutes more awesome and enjoyable.

Best of all, we’re putting $3,000 on the table to make the best ideas happen (thanks to Miami Foundation and Knight Foundation).

Food, drink and excellent live music from Avocado Estate will be served.

Doors at 5:30pm. Discussion and Brainstorm 6:00pm-8:00pm.
