Wynwood at Dark is an essay of urban night photographs showcasing Miami’s vanishing warehouse district. The area dates roughly to Miami’s heyday with the requisite art deco detailing which beautifully complements Daidone’s stark, surreal, dreamlike style and reflects influences of 1940’s film noir and storybook illustrations from the same period.

Planet Beach Launches New Franchise Location in Brickell
Local business owner Natasha Gelman becomes one of the newest franchisees and will celebrate with a Grand Opening party in November

Located on the Mezzanine level of 1060 Brickell, Planet Beach Brickell brings self-automated spa services and the contempo spa concept to hundreds of busy working women (and men) in the Brickell and Downtown Miami area. After months of renovation, the location is finally ready for its close-up and plans to showcase its services with a two-day Grand Opening party, November 8th and 9th.

At the age of 16, Ukranian-born immigrant Natasha Gelman arrived in Miami with her family and not a penny to her name. Through hard work, perserverence and a realty business, Natasha has since amassed ownership in three well-known Miami restaurants. As a busy working woman herself, Natasha began frequenting a Planet Beach location in Miami Beach and, according to her, “fell in love with the Contempo Spa concept.” She added that, “The feeling I got when going to this spa kept me coming back week after week and that is the feeling I wanted to bring to more women like me.”

Brickell is full of people who need a way to relax, unwind and de-stress and industry trends indicate that more consumers are making spa services part of their regular personal wellness regimens. However, traditional day spas can become expensive and difficult to incorporate into a busy schedule. Eighty-three percent of spas have made changes such as increasing treatment options, offering retail products, adding new spa programs and offering shorter treatment durations. This recipe for success was pioneered by Planet Beach, as it was the first company to challenge the concept of the traditional day spa by offering high-quality automated spa services that are convenient and affordable.

Planet Beach evolved into the spa industry in 2005 by expanding beyond tanning options to introduce its Relax, Glow and Renew categories of services to customers. Today it offers more than 20 push button automated spa services including massages, facials, hydration treatments, teeth whitening, red light therapy, as well as nutritional supplements and a skincare line. The automated spa is a unique spin on the traditional day spa giving customers control and offering them unlimited access to a full suite of spa services for a low monthly membership fee.

The monthly membership model allows customers to easily budget for spa services knowing the price they will pay for their monthly wellness needs. Planet Beach offers convenience for customers with self-automated services all in one location. Service times can be controlled to fit into a busy schedule or make for a relaxing day at the spa. Consumers are moving toward this new model for day spas and choosing affordable, convenient services over traditional spa options.

The fifth edition of the monthly event will feature Miami-based artist and designer Karelle Levy of KRELwear

The Broken Shaker and Freehand Miami present the fourth edition of The Drawing Room, a monthly event series that pairs the best of Miami’s local art scene with some of the area’s leading names in cocktails. The Drawing Room brings together two of Miami’s largest cultural platforms, reinforcing the connection that Freehand and Broken Shaker have with the community. Each month, a Miami-based artist is invited to showcase their work at Freehand Miami. Inspired by the artist’s work, the team at The Broken Shaker creates a custom cocktail as a featured special.

This installment of The Drawing Room will feature Miami-based artist Karelle Levy of KRELwear, who will present a selection of her work. Born and raised in Miami, Levy has dedicated her career to exploring the endless possibilities of knitwear. Selecting the threads carefully, she engineers each piece of fabric individually, creating elaborate, light-sensitive fabrics that are then used to make form-fitting dresses, furniture decorations, wall art, and elaborate installations.

For this edition of The Drawing Room, Levy will incorporate her fabrics into the lush gardens of the Broken Shaker, creating an environment full of texture, color, lights and shadows. In addition to this site-specific installation, there will be a fashion show featuring one-of-a-kind hand-knit couture pieces inspired by life in Miami.

This month’s cocktail was created by Broken Shaker’s Cricket Nelson, in collaboration with Karelle Levy. Aptly named Indian Jungle, the cocktail will include bourbon, Indian spice, lemon, ginger, Perrier® Sparkling Natural Mineral Water, topped with star anise and tarragon.

Zoetic Stage and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County are proud to present the world premiere of Fear Up Harsh, a searing new drama by Zoetic Stage co-founder and Carbonell Award-winning playwright Christopher Demos-Brown. Playing November 7 – 24, 2013 in the intimate Carnival Studio Theater (Ziff Ballet Opera House), FEAR UP HARSH marks Zoetic Stage’s much-anticipated return to the Arsht Center for its fourth consecutive season. This production will also launch the company’s 2013-2014 season as part of the Arsht Center’s highly acclaimed Theater Up Close Series which features artistic collaborations from stellar local theater ensembles and nationally acclaimed theater companies.

Fear Up Harsh is sponsored by Robin Ellen Meyers and presented with the support of the GLBT Community Projects Fund at The Miami Foundation.

Tickets to Fear Up Harsh are $45*, and may be purchased through the Adrienne Arsht Center box office by calling (305) 949-6722, or online at www.arshtcenter.org.

Fear Up Harsh, directed by Zoetic Stage Artistic Director and Silver Palm Award-winner Stuart Meltzer, makes its world premiere after receiving critical praise during its recent work-in-progress presentation at the Arsht Center’s 2013 Miami Made Festival.

“I am thrilled to be opening Zoetic Stage’s fourth season at the Arsht Center with a brand new play from Christopher Demos-Brown. I had the opportunity to direct the play in an early reading and the audience was completely wrapped up in the story and its characters. FEAR UP HARSH is a sharp, intelligent play about our time in history and the people that serve this great country of ours,” said Meltzer.

“Fear Up Harsh continues to carry out the central theme of our 2013-14 Theater Up Close Series with its gripping tale of myth versus tragic history, and how that dynamic changes dramatically depending on who gets to tell the story,” said Scott Shiller, executive vice president of the Adrienne Arsht Center. “In addition, we’re thrilled to continue our longtime creative partnership with Zoetic Stage. We’re certain Christopher Demos-Brown’s celebrated storytelling style, coupled with his extensive research and personal interviews with veterans, will leave South Florida audiences thinking about the nature of how we view our modern heroes.”

Fear Up Harsh examines how awards and commendations corrupt those who get them, those who give them, and those of us who worship them. In his latest drama, Demos-Brown tells the story of U.S. Marine Captain Robert Wellman, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who has everything he’s ever wanted. His daughter is matriculating into the Air Force Academy and he owns a lucrative chain of do-it-yourself home improvement stores. However, his idyllic world is threatened when a former comrade shows up on his doorstep and challenges everything he’s built his life around by revealing the truth about his past.

Zoetic Stage was founded in 2010 to produce contemporary plays and musicals that reflect the South Florida community and resonate universally, with a strong commitment to developing new work. The company will co-present four exciting productions in the 2013-2014 season. Following its season opener, Zoetic Stage’s series will continue with Stephen Sondheim’s killer Tony Award-winning musical ASSASSINS, January 30 – February 23, 2014; Clark Gable Slept Here, March 20-April 6, 2013, a world premiere satire from five-time Carbonell Award-winning playwright Michael McKeever; and The Great God Pan, May 22-June 8, 2014, Amy Herzog’s critically-acclaimed drama.

The dust and debris, delays, and detours that are everyday annoyances for people en route to work on South Florida’s highways are seen quite differently by Silvia Lizama, Chair of the Department of Fine Arts and Professor of Photography at Barry University. Equipped with a white hard hat, camera in hand, and an artistic vision, Lizama has created a series of photographs that challenges our perception and turns what we associate as stressful into something serene. She invites the viewer to: “take a moment to really look around — to see what’s in front of us; to see what’s in the shadows; to see the special places.”

This show is the second photography exhibit presented by the school, as part of its 60th Anniversary Alumni Artist Series titled, Through the Lens. Lizama graduated from Notre Dame Academy (the girls’ high school before it merged to become Archbishop Curley Notre Dame) in 1975.

The photos will remain on view through January 24, 2014 with additional gallery hours offered during Art Basel Miami Beach and Miami Art Week 2013. Regular gallery hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Other hours are available by appointment by calling 305.751.8367 or emailing news@acnd.net. The exhibit is free.

“The environment Silvia creates is one of contradictions: destruction and recreation; past and future; monumental stateliness and ugly ruin; life and death,” comments Tracie Heller, exhibit curator and Assistant Professor of Photography at Barry University. “The absence of people and plant life, and the monumentality of the man-made structures, add an air of abandonment, like that of an ancient ruin.”

Earlier construction site images were shot in black and white, using a medium format film camera, and then the surfaces of the printed images were hand colored with photographic oils. Images in the latter part of the series are digital and colored using digital manipulation software.

“Tropical sunrises and sunsets add a dimension of reverence and splendor to the work,” adds Heller. “Now working digitally, she has applied her hand coloring sensibilities to the images using digital manipulation software to create the surreal hues of the sky and land.”

The second Wednesday of every month is gallery night at Red Bar Gallery. Each month a different artist is featured, and in November the featured artist will be Renda Writer, a “found object artist” who makes art out of things that he finds… an air conditioning vent, a few automobile hubcaps, tons of wood from furniture, some random street signs, and a ceiling tile. All of these objects and more have been repurposed as art by Renda. He writes poems, phrases, adages, affirmations, and repetative statements on them and turns them into what he calls, “handwritten found object art.” He will have over 85 pieces of work on display, and is billing the night as a “blowout sale,” saying that, “no reasonable offer on my art will be refused.”

The Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz. Professor Lynch directs his hand picked ensemble of talented young musicians and performs with them as his own group.

Among his many achievements, Brian Lynch has long been known as a great conductor of the jazz jam session. As a member of the house band at the legendary Star Cafe sessions in the New York City of the early 1980s, with Junior Cook and Harold White, and as bandleader of the late night jams at the NY Blue Note in the 1990s, Lynch absorbed the philosophy and practice of the session at its highest level. Now he brings his knowledge and love of the form to Miami and PAX.

Practitioners of all genres from traditional to contemporary, from straight ahead to Afro-Cuban and world music, will be encouraged to participate and cross pollinate, young students and established artists alike. Standards will be kept high and protocol will be firmly in place to encourage the best musical result for players and listeners in the unique and informal atmosphere of PAX!

Brian Lynch

A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. LA CHIVA GANTIVA starts in Brussels with a group of Colombian percussionists playing together, in order to feel closer to their homeland and its rich musical heritage. Pushed by a desire to assert their roots and reproduce Colombian rhythms of yesteryear, like less well known rhythms such as the «champeta», the «chirimia» and the «mapalé», LA CHIVA GANTIVA uses traditional Caribbean instruments such as «la tambora», «el alegre», «el llamador» and «maracones». LA CHIVA GANTIVA does not stop there, they also incorporate instruments like the bass guitar, the clarinet and the saxophone which reflect the diverse influences of the group: Colombian (with the likes of Toto la Moposina, Lucho Bermudez and Petrona Martinez), Latin (Fania All Stars, Irakere), African (Fela Kuti and Tony Allen), Jazz (Lionel Hampton), Funk (the legendary James Brown) and Rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine).

The result of this soundclash is a unique musical style and explosive on-stage energy, that has opened their path to many big festivals throughout Europe. Since 2005, La Chiva Gantiva has played in the biggest festivals in Belgium, Portugal, Holland and Germany. La Chiva Gantiva continues to grow and to build upon their compelling and inspiring musical universe.

DJ Le Spam & Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on.

Spam Allstars were formed by Andrew Yeomanson, a/k/a DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993. He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami based artist Nil Lara. Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers & DJ skills with a live band.

In 2002, Spam Allstars began a weekly residency at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, which continues today. In 2003 they started monthly residencies in New York City, Gainesville, Tampa, Atlanta, and New Orleans, and playing nationally wherever people would host them. Today they perform 200+ shows, and average 56,000 miles each year.

Grovetoberfest 2013 at Peacock Park

Grovetoberfest is Always a Wild Pleasure

by Ari Kane.

Beer is fun! Beer drinkers are usually chill and when you put them all together at a festival, it almost always equates to a gay ole time. Miami Beer fests are great ways to break away from the uppity restaurant and club scene and get trashed with legit, down-to-earth, jovial people. Grovetoberfest returned to Coconut Grove for its third year in a row hosting over 200 great beers from across the world and over 7,000 attendees . In addition to kick ass beers and patrons, there was also the Kitchen Lab where attendees learned from award-winning chefs how to cook with beer and a Beer Tasting 101 hosted by FIU’s vaunted Beer Academy. The VIP section had a scrumptious rotation of food and special VIP beers.

While we were not fortunate (or degenerate) enough to taste every beer we will share our Top 11 (because top 10 is sooo played out), from order of “utter adulation” to “we like it.” :)

(Note to readers: we do not like bitter IPAs but prefer unique, exotic and flavorful beer):

1) Funky Buddha Brewery Blueberry Cobbler  Delicious and fucking creative, Funky Buddha is one of our fave brewers EVER.  You can find spots that host their exquisite beer on their website. The Blueberry Cobbler Ale is a copiously, blueberried glass of goodness, generously dosed with real vanilla beans, quality imported cinnamon, and — of course — whole fruit. Could not agree with their description more “A sip is akin to a bite of fresh baked blueberry pie.”

2)  Funky Buddha Brewery More Moro Blood Orange IPA These guys took the fabled and adored IPA and made it so much better. A moro is an American varietal of blood orange that has deep, crimson red flesh and a mellow citrus flavor. Their More Moro IPA piles on the “moro” for an overload of ripe, fresh blood orange flavor. Deeply citrusy and fruity, with a hop-forward nose, sticky malt body, and long grapefruit hop finish. Thank You, Funky Buddha.

3) Schofferhofer Grapefruit Hefeweizen This beer is just utterly superb, Schofferhofer grapefruit is a unique combination of sparkling wheat beer and refreshing tangy fruit juice. Mix of 50% Schofferhofer wheat beer and 50%  grapefruit juice. So damn good.

4) Cisco Brewers The Grey Lady This wheat beer is fermented with Belgian yeast and brewed with fresh fruit and spices. It is a unique ale that emits a complex, earthy nose and a soft, mid-palate maltiness with hints of tropical fruit. Dry and spicy, truly a great beer.

5) Terrapin Rye Pale Ale– Made with five varieties of hops and a generous amount of specialty malts, it offers a complex flavor and aroma that is both aggressive and well balanced – a rare find among beers that contains a great and unique taste.

6) Holy Mackerel Panic Attack-  So flavorful, A Belgian style ale with a subtle hint of spice clocking in at 10%. Eye popping flavor from a blend of Canadian malted barley, Goldings hops, and a unique flavorful Belgian yeast strain. Unfiltered, unpastuerized and with just a hint of spice this beer is meant to be savored slowly so as to enjoy the aroma as well as the taste. Vintage dated, excellent now but even finer with 2 years age.

7) Wild Blue Blueberry Lager-  Not quite a beer but soooo smooth and delicious. Wild Blue is brewed with a complex blend of two- and six-row barley malt, classic Aroma Hops from the Willamette Valley in the Pacific Northwest and German hops from the Hallertau region in Bavaria. It is blended with all-natural blueberry syrup made from real blueberries, giving the beer a balanced blueberry flavor and pleasant aroma.

8) Harpoon Brewery Pumpkin UFO-  We do love our pumpkins, beers, soup, coffee, ice cream….This beer is a blend of spices that really hits the palate. A malt combination provides a smooth body and slightly sweet flavor, which balances perfectly with the earthy notes derived from the pure pumpkin.

9) Old Chub Scottish Ale-  Brewed with loads of Scottish barley and malted grains and a tad of beech-wood smoked malt. Has a smokey flavor with hints of cocoa and coffee. Pretty damn good.

10) Ommegang Belgian Pale Ale– This libation is a smooth pale ale with notes of citrus and tropical fruit that is refreshing without blowing you away.

11) Inlet Brewing Co. Monk IPA-  More Belgian then Indian, this was a solid and smooth tasty concoction.

Grovetoberfest is always so much fun and we can not wait until The Sprung Spring Beer Festival in March.

See you there Beeroholics ;)

The most romantic place to bike in South Florida

Brian and Naomi at the Sea Ranch Center
A little romance at the Sea Ranch Shopping Strip in Sea Ranch Lakes along our bicycle adventure on A1A.

This past Sunday night, my fiancé, Naomi and I embarked on a 65 mile bicycle journey along A1A from Parkland to Coral Gables. The propose of the trip: to see if we could do it.

I will preface this by saying that I’ve made October my personal “No Car, No Facebook Month”, also to see if I could do it (more on this in a future post). Naomi was gracious enough to go along with my scheme to bike the entire east coast of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. We live in the middle of suburban Coral Gables, and regularly bicycle commute as far as Little Haiti, Wynwood, Downtown and Miami Beach, but by no means, had we been training for a long distance ride like this one.

GAB Studio, 225 NW 26th Street, Miami, Florida 33127 – $15 per seat.

***
How Minis Gone Wild! came to be; New Light Theatre’s Resident Playwright, Artist and Director, Wendy White envisioned a new type of theatre production featuring mini-plays. Wendy often paints in her studio, living by her motto ‘painting a mini a day keeps the doctor away.’ Her initial concept of matching a mini-painting with a mini-play gained momentum and she invited other talented South Florida playwrights to join her; and voila ‘Minis Gone Wild!’ was born. States Wendy White; “I can’t help but to Maximize all the Mini Power by painting minis, singing minis, showing minis, and performing minis!”
Nine new original mini-plays will be performed by the talented cast: Gema Calero, Luis Navarro, Rio Chavarro, Tamara C. Moore-White, Gabriel Villasmil, Jessica Pusceddu, Mario Temes, Robert Hernandez and Julie Kendall.
1) “Hi. I’m Anne and I’m Afraid of Squirrels Biting my Ankles” by Wendy White
2) “The Unusual Suspect…” by Matthew Para
3) “Brunch Soon” by Marla E. Schwartz
4) “Statuesque” by Luis Navarro
5) “Wet Paint” by Wendy White
6) “I Want to Be Your Sculpture” by Wendy White
7) “Vincent’s Room” by Wendy White
8) “Starry Nights and Midnight Chats” by Elaine Alonso-Cruz
9) “Art Deals in Dealers” by Rio Chavarro

The playwright and director, Wendy White has written over 125 one-act plays and was a resident playwright, curator and director at the Kraine Theater in the East Village of New York City from 1984 to 1992, and at the Expanded Arts Theater Company from 1994 to 2001, in the Lower East Side of New York City. Her off-Broadway productions are the basis for her new venue at the New Light Theatre. She recently produced her one woman show; The Jewish Nun to sold-out audiences in Off-Broadway’s 59e59 Theatre and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The New Light Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit public foundation and has won numerous awards around the globe. The theatre company has performed everywhere from Amsterdam to Paris; from Miami to Los Angeles to New York City; and has tackled subjects relating to women, love, politics, and Shakespeare.

Miami Project will return to the destination location of the Wynwood Art District from December 3 to 8, 2013. It will again present a selection of historically important and cutting-edge contemporary work side by side, with a unique emphasis on the strength of individual exhibitors’ programs irrespective of their primary focus. Sixty galleries from across the United States will show at the fair.

Galleries that represent prominent estates like those of Larry Rivers and Robert Mapplethorpe will exhibit next to those showing today’s most exciting young artists. Work from the historic avant-garde will inform and contextualize the best examples of contemporary practice. Galleries are curated into Miami Project based on a serious commitment to important living artists; extensive involvement with remarkable estates; and the strength of their program generally.

The fair’s emphasis on presenting quality works in an intimate setting won over its 20,000 visitors last year, and the 2013 edition will again be boutique-scale, allowing for comfortable viewing in a relaxed atmosphere. Miami Project is housed in a deluxe, open-plan tent with soaring cathedral ceilings erected especially for the fair. It will feature roomy aisles and extravagant lounges for a pleasant visitor experience.

Miami Project is presented with support from the Wall Street Journal, Luxe magazine, Perrier, the Midtown Doral, Porcelanosa, New Amsterdam Vodka, and Shellback Rum.

The opera, which opens FGO’s season at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, November 7 is already being heralded as the “Hot Ticket” to see this season by Opera News and the #1 classical musical event to see this season by the Miami Herald. Susan Danis, FGO’s new CEO who is rewriting the libretto for opera in the region, will join Betsy owner Jonathan Plutzik at the dinner.

Seats are limited for the black tie evening which includes operatic performances, a three course menu from award-winning restaurant BLT Steak’s celebrity chef Laurent Tourondel, and a specially curated look at what is often called “the Great American Opera, which will premiere in Miami on Saturday, November 16 at the Adrienne Arsht Center.

Betsy’s Opera Dinner begins with a red carpet welcome and champagne reception where guests will be treated to favorite operatic repertoire performed by Florida Grand Opera Young Artists. The Betsy’s jewel box special events space, BBAR, will then welcome guests to beautifully adorned tables and wall mounted illuminated images from the making of Mourning Becomes Electra, to include sketches of sets and costumes, replicas of original musical manuscript, and other seldom seen items, that when presented together tell an engaging story to heighten the live musical experience.

After dinner is served, Dr. Julie Maykowiski, director of music administration at FGO will take the audience on a unique journey into the opera, sharing information that aficionados will covet when they attend opening nights prepared to enjoy performances on a deeper level. Dessert and coffee in BBar will be followed with a nightcap on The Betsy’s incomparable roof deck, where by the light of the moon and glow of the ocean, dinner guests will toast to FGO’s 73rd Season.

Handcrafted Tattoo & Art Gallery Presents

“Up & Away” Alex Yanes Partners With Ink Master’s Chris Nunez For Last Solo Exhibition In Miami At Handcrafted Tattoo and Art Gallery

Coming back from his recent sold-out exhibition at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles, local favorite Alex Yanes has no signs of slowing down, at least not until after his solo exhibition. Acclaimed artist, Alex Yanes, will present a his last solo exhibition in Miami, entitled “Up & Away“ at Handcrafted Miami during Wynwood’s 2nd Saturday’s Art Walk on Saturday, November 9th. Handcrafted is the brainchild of world-renowned tattoo artist and Spike TV’s Ink Master reality star, Chris Nunez. Nunez has transformed a 3,000 square foot space in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District into an uber hip tattoo parlor and art gallery. Once you walk through the parlor, you enter their gallery space, which also has a garage door leading to their outdoor patio. The multi-use concept combines tattoo enthusiasts love for ink and art.

“I had this concept of an open art space, as much open space as possible because I wanted to break the mold of traditional tattoo shops, the stuffiness and people having to work on top of each other.” He worked closely with designer, Sean Saladino, brother of Pride and Joy owner and designer, Mike Saladino. Chris continues, ”With the gallery, we wanted to do the environment where you go from the warm kind of eclectic reclaimed but comfy feel from the lighting to the floor to the walls.”

Yanes will exhibit new, never-before-seen works, as this will also be his last exhibition in Miami. The 3,000 square foot gallery will house over 20 of his strikingly colorful 2 and 3D mixed media works on wood including his custom, wall-mounted, Bluetooth speaker boxes. Additionally, he will be debuting a brand new customized speaker system created from a 1960’s refurbished speaker console complete with Technics turntables and his signature wood cutouts. Whimsical, yet relatable, Yanes’ art embodies an innovative use of color and imaginative subject matter that has become a staple in Miami’s Wynwood Art District.

Doors will open to VIP’s and collectors privately from 7-8pm and to the public from 8-11pm. Enjoy beats by DJ Rage Johnson and complimentary signature cocktails by Deep Eddy all-natural premium vodka and Perrier® Sparkling Natural Mineral Water.

Nedal Ahmad / Pincho Factory

Local favorite Pincho Factory recently opened its second location in the heart of Coral Gables. With chalkboard painted walls, reclaimed wood tables and an inviting atmosphere, the restaurant has quickly been embraced by its new neighborhood. Chat Chow TV sat down with Pincho Factory owner Nedal Ahmad and learned more about the restaurant specialities and the inspirations for the menu.

The restaurant gets its name from the skewers – or “pinchos” – that are prominently featured on the menu. Guests can customize them to their liking opting for steak, chicken or shrimp, served in either a salad, rice bowl or pita, with an assortment of sauces and toppings.

While pinchos are the namesake, what has really made the restaurant a dining destination is its over-the-top burgers such as its Toston Burger, which was recently featured on Travel Channel’s “Burgerland,” and its Pastelito Burger. The menu also features a selection of weekly food special depending on Ahmed’s mood.

“The chalkboard specials usually reflect what I’m craving that week,” said Ahmad with a laugh. “Occasionally it’ll have something to do with the season, but usually its revolving around my cravings.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily, until 1am on Friday and Saturday, and even features a decadent brunch on Sundays serving up items such as Red Velvet Pancakes and Banana Bread French Toast.

Hungry yet? Find out all about these drool-worthy dishes and more in the video above.

The Jade Signature movie premiere is an example of how the real estate industry is anteing up with innovative techniques on how to sell and showcase high-end real estate. Following the stunning visuals of Jade Signature is insightful commentary by Jade Signature’s brilliant design team. The production team, DCode Films, flew out to Paris to film interior lifestyle designer PYR led by Pierre-Yves Rochon, with Pritzker Prize-winning architecture team Herzog & de Meuron in attendance. Renowned landscape architect Raymond Jungles and Fortune International’s Edgardo and Ana Cristina Defortuna also provided commentary on their vision of Jade Signature and how the building was designed around a purpose with a focus on every detail.

Carlos Mencia at Magic City Casino

Carlos Mencia is still funny as shit

Despite legions of shitalkers saying otherwise, Carlos is a funny fuckin bastard. He had a hilarious set at a sold out Magic city Casino this past October 18th. He joked about sharks talking shit to the girl who got her arm bit off surfing and then went back into the water. Americans needing to staple their stomachs shut when they should just hire starving Africans to hit the food out of their hands before they eat it. As well as kids past 18 who do not leave their parents house when their dads just want to be able to get blown in their own kitchens. The show was really funny and we can not wait to see him again.

54th Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Long-Sharp Gallery on SeaFair 10/31/13-11/4/13

54th Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Long-Sharp Gallery
From October 31 to November 4
Greater Ft. Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center
1950 Eisenhower Boulevard
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316

As Seafair, the megayacht art venue, docks at the 54th Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Long-Sharp Gallery will present rare works by the masters of modern and contemporary art. More than a dozen original drawings by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Pablo Picasso will be aboard the 228-foot ship – the largest of its kind built for commercial operation on the Intercoastal Waterway. Gallerist Rhonda Long-Sharp, who, with record sales at Scope Miami 2012 and Art Palm Beach 2013, will for the first time present an exquisite sampling of the “Icons and Irony” exhibition in South Florida.

The selection will include a rare 1901 original drawing and watercolor by Pablo Picasso, authenticated by Maya Widmaier-Picasso (a daughter of Picasso); multiple early drawings by Warhol, authenticated by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and never privately-owned; an early drawing by Basquiat authenticated by his estate; two Lichtenstein drawings archived by his estate, including one of two known examples of his Brushtroke Stamp, and several works from notable up-and-coming contemporary artists: David Kramer, Russell Young and David Datuna. Viewers will notice the reoccurring theme of the drawing, to show its importance as the foundation of art making and increasing demand in the marketplace.

Long-Sharp Gallery’s fine art aboard the Seafair will be among an important group of luxury and fine art galleries – and arrives on the heels of the gallery’s 2013 exhibition at Masterpiece London, an annual British fair that brings together collectors, exhibitors and curators from around the world. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show sale also comes at a time when Long-Sharp’s “Icons and Irony” exhibition is listed among the top fall gallery shows in the world by Modern Painters magazine.

Studio Life Miami Book Launch 10/29/13

Studio Life Miami Book Launch
StudioLifeTuesday, October 29th, 7:00 pm
Gallery Diet
174 NW 23rd St
Miami, FL 33127

Please join us Tuesday, October 29th at 7:00 for a panel discussion with Christy Gast, Nicolas Lobo, Christina Lei Rodriguez and Bhakti Baxter. Moderated by Sarah Trigg Author of Studio Life: Rituals, Tools, Collections and Observations on the Artistic Process.

In 2009 artist and writer Sarah Trigg embarked on an ambitious field expedition across the United States, interviewing more than 200 artists in their studios. She sat down with everyone, from painters to performance artists, to investigate a wide range of artmaking practices. The result is Studio Life, a fascinating photographic and written account of 100 of her visits. Trigg asks her subjects to share objects and working habits in six categories: mascots, collected objects, rituals, makeshift tools, residue, and habitats. These talismans and behaviors provide a framework for artists to reveal insights into their practices and the nature of the creative life. Intriguing and often humorous anecdotes emerge, of one studio’s mysterious sealed vault, another’s resident bunny, and countless sources of inspiration are unearthed: vintage comics, purses, and kitschy figurines; faded yearbooks and treasured cards and letters; and one handwritten reminder to Quit Feelin’ Sorry for Yourself. Accessible and relevant for amateur aesthetes and art-world professionals, Studio Life offers an insider’s view of the artistic process as well as a snapshot of the most interesting work being produced today.

Among the 100 artists featured in Studio Life such as William Wegman, Pat Steir, John Baldessari, Carol Bove, Rashid Johnson, Peter Halley, Fred Tomaselli, Tony Oursler, Jim Shaw, Michelle Grabner, Tauba Auerbach, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Dana Schutz, and David Altmejd, to name a few, the book features the Miami-based artists George Sánchez-Calderón, the TM Sisters, Victoria Gitman, Pablo Cano and our panelists Christy Gast, Nicolas Lobo, Cristina Lei Rodriguez and Bhakti Baxter.

Sarah Trigg is an artist, writer, photographer, and the creator behind the widely read website The Goldminer Project (thegoldminerproject.com). She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

You’ve seen his work from I-95, foregrounding Bob Marley on one entire side of Armory Studios, a well-honed splash of magic that can’t be missed, no matter how fast you’re navigating the highway.

You’ve seen his work at Fountain Art Fair, Gallery 305 and at Lauderdale’s Fat Village, where his Industrial Gate thresholds the way for the wily willing to venture north of the Dade County Line.

And make no mistake, it is that County Line which corrals and defines the man and the work. For it is there where, back in ‘85, he threw up Dade’s very first Wall of Fame. And there where the next year he staged Dade’s first graffiti-themed gallery. It is The 305, dig? And he is one of its original street heroes.

The cat is known as Hec One Love, and he and his inimitable imaging have done much to make Miami (and Miami-Dade) an absolutely singular sensation.

This Black Friday night, at Win 317, the man of many wonders pops-up with Love-ism, an experience in artful commodification that’ll price tag everything from one-of-a-kind souvenir-sized collectibles to specially-commissioned murals. This being Hec, it’ll also spur you to see the world from a whole new horizon.

On Saturday, October 26, 2013, Tongue & Cheek, South of Fifth’s quirky and playful restaurant, will celebrate October’s most anticipated holiday with a fun-filled, Halloween inspired brunch for the whole family from noon until 2 p.m. Along with a hauntingly delicious à la carte kids menu, which is complimentary for all children under the age of 12, the neighborhood eatery will have fun activities and entertainment throughout the afternoon including pumpkin painting, costume contests and balloon artists. T&C’s regular Sunday brunch menu is available for adults with some additional Halloween treats and drink specials including “True Blood” Bloodies, traditional “Zombie” cocktail, “Dark and Stormys” and more.

In addition, Tongue & Cheek is asking all diners to bring non-perishable, kid-friendly food items including, but not limited to, granola bars, raisins, apple sauce, crackers, macaroni and cheese and canned soups to be donated to Feeding South Florida’s “Backpack Program.” Seeking to fill the void of the necessary nutrients children need to live, learn and play, Feeding South Florida provides backpacks full of food for thousands of low-income children throughout Miami Dade on Friday afternoons. This food nourishes the children on the weekend when other food might not be available. Many times, low-income children don’t eat between leaving school on Friday and the school breakfast on Monday morning. Not only will diners who bring food items in be helping a great cause, they will also receive a special Halloween treat.

Yes, there is a princess who pricks her finger and falls into a magic sleep, but there is also a vicious ogre mother-in-law, and ungrateful queen, and, in the center of it all, a grumpy fairy whose magic comes with stinky gas.

A forum presented by Life is Art and the Arts & Business Council to outline the possibilities and penalties, opportunities and threats faced by artists and arts groups about the new health care law.

Schedule:
3:00-3:30pm – Arrival and registration
3:30-5:00pm – Seminar
5:00-6:00pm – Socializing with sponsored drinks and bites
provided by Elwoods GastroPub, KIND Healthy Snacks, Marley Coffee, Scratch Bakery, Mad Chiller, Vita Coco

Many artists and nonprofit arts groups in Miami-Dade are woefully unaware of the details concerning the Affordable Care Act. The new law brings big changes and opportunities for independent artists and organizations, but with it also comes potential dangers and penalties. The act is confusing and for both individuals and groups. This forum will provide all the information at one time and in one place. Everything you need to know about the new law but were afraid to ask.

Panelists:
Louis Balbirer – Kaufman Rossin & Co.
Maura Shiffman – MPH, Community Health Specialist, Health Council of South Florida
Sandra Garcia – Marketplace Certified Agent, Creative Healthcare Marketing
Sean Dugan – Senior Vice-President, Hayes Company

The program will cover:

For Artists and Contract Employees:
1. Many artists and nonprofit employees are currently uninsured or under-insured. This is a great opportunity for everyone to get health insurance and have a medical safety net.
2. Are artists and individuals required to have insurance? Find out the facts to avoid penalties and fines.
3. What is the deadline that everyone must be insured?
4. What are the options for health insurance and coverage? Learn the details about the types of coverage available and how artists and arts employees can find affordable care.
5. What resources are available to help navigate the new health plans and to find the ones that are right for you.
6. Do you qualify for a subsidy or tax credit? Many people are eligible for a subsidy in the cost of coverage depending on your income level and other factors.

For Arts Groups and Employers
1. What does health care reform mean for nonprofit groups?
2. Is your group eligible to get money back? If your organization pays the health premiums for your employees you might be eligible for a credit or subsidy based on the size of your staff, salary levels and insurance costs. Learn how to qualify for money back.
3. What facts should groups provide employees? As a nonprofit your arts group is responsible for letting your employees know what your business offers them in terms of health insurance and what their options are. We will provide sample notices and provide you with the tools to explore your options.
4. Is my group required to provide health insurance coverage?

This forum will cover all the aspects of the new insurance options and help you understand what your options are. This is crucial information for artists and art organizations. Participants will also receive a checklist and a tool box of resources to help them navigate the brave new world of affordable options. Following the seminar, there will be a social hour with sponsored refreshments and time for personal questions to the presenters.
