The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County will host its 9th anniversary gala on April 24, 2015. The Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House will be transformed into an intimate dining and performance space for this special evening.

The 9th anniversary gala will once again be chaired by two of South Florida’s most esteemed members of the philanthropic community, Swanee and Paul DiMare. Adrienne Arsht, the Center’s name benefactor, will serve as honorary chair. Margaret and Mike Eidson will serve as Gala co-chairs. Gala proceeds will support the Center’s mission-driven arts education and community outreach programs.

“Every Gala is an opportunity for us to see how the support and funding provided by the philanthropic community has helped the Arsht Center in achieving its mission of making the performing arts accessible to all, as all the money raised through this event goes directly back to education programming,” said Swanee DiMare, chair of the Gala for the third year in a row.

Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award-winning international superstar Barry Manilow will wow guests with a concert at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-with a special tribute to Frank Sinatra in honor of Frank’s 100th birthday. For the Arsht Center’s annual celebration, the Center will transform the Ziff Ballet Opera House into an intimate “supper club” with cocktails, dinner, and dancing directly on the Lynn Wolfson Stage.

The attire is black tie. Limited table and sponsorship opportunities are available for $50,000 and $25,000, and individual tickets are available for $2,500. Downtown Boutique Hotel Invites Miamians to Pitch Their Ideas to Restore Old Post Office Building to Historic Grandeur

After beautifully restoring the historic Miami National Bank building and transforming it into The Langford Hotel, Miami-based Stambul Development today unveils details about the Old Post Office Development Contest, which invites local artists, urban planners, architects, students, engineers, designers, entrepreneurs and any other concerned Miamian to offer their personal vision of what should now become of the Old U.S. Post Office and Courthouse Building. Stambul Development encourages contestants to present ideas that are innovative, authentic, and original.

Stambul, a development and construction company specializing in the development of new structures including custom homes, commercial buildings and hospitality projects, recently embarked on a journey to revive downtown Miami. This journey began when Stambul teamed up with Coral Gables-based Trust Hospitality to convert the historic Beaux Arts edifice at 121 SE First Street into T

he Langford Hotel. Now that The Langford Hotel has become a reality, Stambul has strategically chosen The Old Post Office building as the next target of its revitalization efforts.

Located at the heart of downtown Miami at 100-118 Northeast Avenue, the Old Post Office is a significant landmark to the history of architecture, government, economics and community development in Miami. The four-story, Neo-Classical building was the first major federal facility in Miami, and was constructed over a three year period, from 1912-1914. It was designed by Kiehnel, Elliott and Oscar Wenderoth, and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on January 4, 1989. The Miami-Dade County Tax Records say this building was built in 1917.

Contest Goals

The aim of the Old Post Office Development Contest is to restore the Old Post Office to its original, historic grandeur while also providing the best use for the building and serving the surrounding downtown market. Stambul Development seeks to seamlessly integrate the Old Post Office building with the downtown community, and develop a project that is feasible, profitable, and that will attract people to the downtown area.

Contest Schedule

The Old Post Office Development Contest will adhere to the following schedule: The contest begins on January 01, 2015 and ends on June 19, 2015 (the “Contest Period”). Registration (to be made on the Registration Page) opens at 9:00 a.m. EST on January 01, 2015, and closes at 5:00 p.m. EST on April 20, 2015. Registered Participants will be offered a guided visit to the Old Post Office Building at 9:00 a.m. EST on April 27, 2015. Participant submissions (“Proposals”) will be accepted from 9:00 a.m. EST on April 21, 2015 until 5:00 p.m. EST on June 5, 2015 (the “Proposal Period”). Winners will be announced on June 19, 2015.

Contest Prizes

The three most deserving projects will be chosen by a jury made up of members of the board of the company and local professionals based on the following criteria: creativity, feasibility, compliance with the contest’s goals, and innovation. The winners will have the opportunity to see their vision realized, showcase their Proposals at The Langford Hotel, and receive both a two-night stay at The Langford and one following money Prizes: First Prize: $5,000; Second Prize: $2,000; Third Prize: $1,000. If the winner is a team, the money prize will be divided equally among the registered team members. About Sheila Fraga
One of the most important reasons of my artist work is the need to reflect my feelings like a Cuban woman and experiences with a chronological- spiritual character about my past, present and future. In this scenery I show reconciliation, nostalgias, religion beliefs, memories, like pieces that are assembled within a puzzle. I create many compositions, recreated in family pictures, appropriations of passages of the Art History that are uncontextualized to the reality. I deal with identity and migration themes to represent my today’s conflicts. Sometimes I use humor and sadness images like a “Cuban Ajiaco”. I take the oil paintings, charcoal drawing, collage, mixed media and the Cutout. In this long road appear answers to questions such as: What I am looking at, where I am now and how can I get to achieve it? My work is an autobiographic reflection of my life.

About Litana
Litana is a self taught artist. She currently resides in Miami. She mainly creates in oils but likes to explore other mediums. She has participated in collaborations with other artists and in group exhibitions. She creates to inspire the imagination.

About Vivian Estalella
Cuban-American artist Vivian Estalella was born and raised in Miami, Florida in a family of strong independent women. As a little girl, she never played with dolls or toys. Instead, she preferred to spend her time coloring. She was always happier with a box of crayons or paints than a Barbie doll. Always creative, she enjoyed the arts from a very young age. At the age of 15, a trip to Mexico awakened her passion for painting. The intensely rich colors of Mexican art struck a cord and, together with her Cuban roots, formed a style that is both distinctive and uniquely vibrant. The sights, sounds, exotic tastes, and passionate people of the tropics, along with the sensuous female form, are all prevalent in her work.
Vivian’s collection has been displayed at several art shows and fairs. She was also a resident artist at Viernes Culturales, Miami’s monthly art fair in historic Little Havana for several years. Today, her work can be seen in private collections and exhibited at seasonal art shows. At every opportunity, Vivian gives back to the community. Several pieces have been donated to auctions benefiting various local charities.

About DJ Hank Justice
DJ/Writer/Editor from Miami that is fighting musical injustice one beat at a time. In 2012, Hank reunited with one of his long-lost loves: Music. He was always the kid that turned to music. It was always deeply embedded in him since birth. While he was in high school and college, he always found himself at parties wishing he could be in control of the music. He wasn’t interested in partying; he was interested in orchestrating them. Hank’s mission is to destroy musical injustice in the form of DJ sets chock-full of music that people can enjoy and move to. He is often asked what he is playing and is often told that his selection is unique and excellent. This is because he spends hours each day carefully digging for gems anywhere he can. He loves sharing these sounds with the world and hopes to be able to do so more often and for more people. It’s a musical story that’s forever under construction.

Clinton Global Initiative University Day Of Action 3/8/15

Clinton Global Initiative University Day Of Action
Sunday, March 8th
Liberty City,
Miami, FL

President Bill Clinton, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton will be hosting the eighth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting, which will bring together more than 1,000 college students from around the world on March 6-8 at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

In partnership with Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI) in Liberty City and the University of Miami, on Sunday, March 8th, President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will host the Clinton Global Initiative University Day of Action, a day of volunteering to give back to the community.

More than 700 CGIU students will work on neighborhood and school improvement projects ranging from urban agriculture to revitalizing basketball courts and painting murals. More than 30 projects are expected to be completed. MCI has designated 29 blocks in Liberty City as their “Impact Zone”. CGIU Day of Action will officially expand MCI’s Block-by-Block strategy, within the Impact Zone, from four blocks to eight. These blocks are home to Charles R. Drew K-8 Center, early learning centers, single family homes, public and low income apartments. MCI’s “cradle-to-college-to-career” strategy is focused on intentionally investing in children and their families. We are determined that the future of Liberty City’s children will not be defined by their zip code.

Clinton Global Initiative University:
The Eighth annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) brings students, innovators, thought-leaders, and civically-engaged celebrities to make a difference in CGIU’s five focus areas: education; environment and climate change; peace and human rights; poverty alleviation; and public health.

University Of Miami:
Since the first CGI U meeting, attendees have made 4,800 Commitments to Action: new, specific, and measurable plans to address challenges on campus, in local communities, or around the world. This growing community of young leaders represents over 875 schools, 145 countries, and all 50 states.

This year, through the CGI University Network, the Resolution Project Social Venture Challenge, and other opportunities, more than $900,000 in funding opportunities will be available to select CGI U 2015 students to help them turn their ideas into action.

The University of Miami first hosted CGI U in 2010 and is the first school to host the event twice. Throughout the meeting, students will engage in various topic-and skill-based sessions, which will empower them to take action in their communities and around the world.

Plenary session topics at CGI U 2015 will include:
Fast Forward: Accelerating Opportunity for All, which will explore how students and universities, in partnerships with the public, private, and civil society sectors, can expand access to opportunity worldwide;
The Power of Big Data, which will examine how CGI U students can harness big data as a tool for addressing global challenges and scaling their existing commitments, as well as expanding access to big data for all; and
The Future of Energy, which will explore how young entrepreneurs can most effectively meet the rising demand for affordable renewable solutions, design the next generation of low-carbon energy technologies, and bring energy efficiency best practices to existing buildings, vehicles, and industrial processes.

CGI U Schedule:
On March 5 and 6, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Clinton Foundation Codeathon in the lead up to the CGI University meeting. The Codeathon will challenge developers and designers to build unique digital prototypes inspired by CGI U Commitments to Action in the areas of Education, Global Health, and Environment & Climate Change. The Codeathon, supported in part by The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will culminate with team presentations to a panel of expert judges working in the fields of technology and social innovation.

Marco Fusi, the Italian violist par excellence presents a program of the 21st-century Italian music for viola and for viola and cello with the Miami-based Jason Calloway.

Fusi believes that music unveils “something really mysterious and unpredictable” via a performer. Most of the programmed works are a result of personal collaboration with the composer: “Working together is the best way to learn about music, about yourself and about other points of view,” claims Fusi, pointing to the importance of expanding one’s musical horizons. Fusi is excited about musing the personal with professional. It is, in fact, the first time he will perform with the cellist Jason Calloway—his long-time friend and the new music string champion in Miami.

The program includes several US premieres and a World premiere by Luciano Chessa, that engages some curious “seasonal” items. Fusi is excited about sharing a diverse sample of contemporary Italian music with the South Florida audiences, offering a rare aural look “through a window the contemporary Italian soundscape.”

About the artist
Marco Fusi, violinist, violist and composer studied with Dimitrios Polisoidis, Ernst Kovacic and Jeanne-Marie Conquer. Marco has performed with conductors and soloists including Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, Peter Eötvös , Beat Furrer, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gustav Kuhn, Jürg Wyttenbach, Jean Deroyer, and Marco Angius. He has premiered new works by composers Castiglioni, Eötvös, Sciarrino, Vacchi, and Cattaneo, among others. Marco has had the opportunity to perform concerts in renowned halls such as the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, KKL Konzertsaal in Lucerne, Beyond Baroque in Los Angeles, Experimental Intermedia in NYC, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, and the Béla Bartók Concert Hall in Budapest. Marco has collaborated with Ensemble Algoritmo (Rome), Interface (Frankfurt), Proton (Bern), Linea (Strasbourg), Phoenix (Basel), l’Arsenale (Treviso), MotoPerpetuo (NYC), Ecce (Boston), and Handwerk (Köln). His complete recording of John Cage’s Freeman Etudes was released by Stradivarius; he has been invited to present this project, giving concerts, masterclasses and lectures at University of Southern California, Arizona State University, and the Milan Conservatory. Marco was a member of Lucerne Festival Academy from 2007 to 2012, under the artistic and musical direction of Pierre Boulez.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – In Denim Jumpsuits We Trust

G-Star-RAW-Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-In-Denim-Jumpsuits-We-Trust

Fact: We are obsessed with denim. Denim is the number one staple of our weekend wardrobe, which is why we are psyched that it has stepped front and center into the fashion spotlight in recent years. Last season was all about the overall. This season has been all about the jumpsuit. As avid fanatics, we go all in each season with the denim trend du jour so, right now, in denim jumpsuits we trust.

Denim is a tough material to wear in Miami – it requires calculated usage. If you wear too much, it can be too thick and too hot for our weather. Without the right accessories, it can look too casual to go out in a city known for dressing to the nines. For us, it’s all about strategically dressing up denim so it fits Miami’s aesthetic and works with Miami’s subtropical climate.

On Friday night, for the first time since the 90s, we stepped out in a Forever21 denim jumpsuit (similar) to the preview party for G-Star RAW‘s newest collection. Our only accessory for the night? A pair of statement heels – leopard print Steve Madden kitten heels (similar) to be exact. The heels were sufficiently dainty to give the look a feminine edge. Plus, they helped to elevate the ultra-casual piece to look more dressed up.

At the G-Star RAW event, we spotted three denim jumpsuits that we absolutely need in our closet. Turns out, G-Star RAW is also on that jumpsuit vibe! We tried all of them on and modeled them for you to show you how – whether you like light denim or dark denim, whether you wear it fitted or loose – there is a denim jumpsuit for you out there. Check them out then tell us, how do you wear yours? #TightOrWide?

GCVCA’s 2nd Annual Expo Showcasing Entrepreneurs

We attended the 2nd annual Gold Coast Venture Capital Association (GCVCA) Expo on February 24, alongside 600+ fellow patrons. The rooms were packed wall to wall with enthusiastic entrepreneurs, investors, and other related parties all anticipating meeting the carefully curated exhibitors and listening to the two illuminating speaker panels.

GCVCA’s mission is to provide a forum to share information that is pertinent to and develop relationships among entrepreneurs, investors and service providers in Florida’s Gold Coast, roughly defined as Palm Beach to Miami. It is safe to say they overwhelmingly accomplished this mission with the Expo.

Bob Fitts, president of GCVCA, granted us access to the VIP Reception, which allowed us time to meet with him and all of the exhibiting entrepreneurs. Bob mentioned that one key to the success of this Expo was the significant consideration they gave to selecting each exhibiting entrepreneur. GCVCA wanted to ensure there were an adequate variety of pre-screened companies available for their investor members to converse with.

Bob Fitts

The GCVCA Expo afforded us the opportunity to meet very interesting companies that don’t frequent the Miami circuit.

One such company was a watchmaker named EnergyBionics that creates watches that have a mini solar panel on the face, stores energy, and then can be used to recharge your smartphone or other electronic device.

EnergyBionics

Another company was Prometheon whose slogan was “This is not for pricks”. Their patent-pending technology is a transdermal platform that allows for the delivery of large molecule drugs across the skin. Simply stated, they can deliver drugs like insulin through a patch thereby replacing tons of needles with a single patch.

Prometheon

There were many other stand-out companies, many from Miami, that were granted the opportunity to pitch to a captive audience of investors – all thanks to the GCVCA. You can see the full list of exhibitors here – http://www.gcvcaexpo.org/start-ups/

The other highlight of the evening was the panels. Great insights, strategies, and actionable suggestions were shared throughout the educational evening.

Speaking with various angel investors present we asked what they were specifically looking for in an investment. The top three were:

  1. An actual revenue model leading to a sustainable business
  2. A team with the capabilities to lead and grow a company
  3. A clear and thought out marketing and sales strategy

The 2015 GCVCA Expo was another resounding success. The buzz throughout the night was both electric and contagious, even more so than last year’s Expo. We are eagerly anticipating next year’s Expo!

Wynwood wall art and artists are reaching an all time fever pitch and Wall Brawl will be showcasing exactly that. Join us and see first hand how some of the most recognizable street artists do what they do best, as they battle it out and raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The fact that the Oxygen Channel has started airing their new TV show “Street Art Throwdown”, specifically on street art, is only compounding how hot this trend has become.

Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to watch some of the biggest names in street art go face to face and compete for the title of the Best Street Artist of Miami.
Open bar by Bombay Sapphire and Zacapa Rum with lite bites by Morgans for all those attending as you place your vote for your favorite artist and we auction off their pieces.

At Wall Brawl Miami we will be auctioning off the pieces to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities as a silent auction. What his means is that recognized artists will be donating their time and art to help raise money. Art enthusiasts and art collectors will have a unique opportunity to acquire a piece from a recognized artists that would normally go for tens of thousands, at any given gallery, for pennies on the dollar. Our silent auction has no reserve and creates a very unique opportunity to be able to buy original, one-of-a-kind pieces by some of the top artists, starting at $1.00 dollar.

Artists include : HecOne Love, Skott Marsi, Bruno Vago, Furious (DAM Crew), KEDS (DAM Crew), Monique Lassooij, Claudia La Bianca, TeePop, NateD, Wilson, Jorge-Miguel Rodriguez, Ill Surge, GG, Atomik, Ivan Roque, Registered Artist, Aquarela Allyson Sabol, Nicole Salgar, Rigo Leon, Kazilla, Trek 6

Every year in March my partners and I always do a big, art related exposition and this is what we have chosen to produce this year. Our goal has always been to make Miami a major contender in the art world outside of Art Basel. Our belief has always been that Miami has a cultural and artistic backbone that only now is being recognized by everyone else.

The success and news of our expositions have garnered us worldwide attention and always in the month of March, so there is no association with Art Basel. Don’t just take my word for it you can very easily Google: Dali Miami and Haring Miami. There is an underlying story here waiting to get out.

This year we decided to turn our focus to home because we need the world to know that Miami is a hot bed for talented artists. Wynwood graffiti and wall art has reached an all time fever pitch. People from all over the world are coming to our little neighborhood just to check out this incredible symbiosis between property owners of buildings in Wynwood and graffiti artists. Business owners are now looking for artists to team up with so they can make their store fronts a piece of art that people will walk or drive around too and see. Business owners are incorporating their signs and business logos with the art to garner more attention and foot traffic.

Steve Santana / Taquiza

Taquiza has become the go-to spot for authentic tacos and late night eats on Miami Beach. Started by Eating House and Freehand Miami alum Steve Santana, it serves up tacos on house-made masa that has everyone buzzing. Chat Chow TV sat down with Santana to find out more about them and the concept behind them.

The fast casual restaurant, located on the first floor of the Eva Hotel, is a no-frills taqueria serving up seven different types of tacos to a standing-room only crowd. Santana emphasizes that everything in Taquiza is homemade right down to its masa corn tortillas, which uses corn grown in small heirloom farms sourced by Masienda. Other popular menu items include the guacamole with hand torn chips, dry rubbed beef jerky, and its take on the popular ice cream treat the choco taco.

But Santana hasn’t always been a chef — he actually began his career doing digital work, but always had a passion for food. After helping coordinate one of the first-ever Cobaya dinners, he met chef Jeremiah Bullfrog and began assisting him on his food truck. His passion grew from there and before long he left the digital world and became a chef full time.

Curious how Santana learned how to master the masa tortilla? Or what tacos are his favorite on the menu? Find out all that and more in video above.

World’s Smallest Arts Festival Rocks On

Each year the artists gather here beneath the trees. Every year, people flock here for a good time and to grab up the art. And unlike almost any other event in Florida, each year at the end of the day, they give away all the money. They’ve got great karma.

Everything takes place on Gifford Lane along one residential block near the Kirk Munroe tennis courts, between Oak and Day Avenues (3200 block) in Coconut Grove. There will be no vehicular traffic permitted along the lane during the event.

The event features work by seventy artists positioned along the lane with artwork displayed on fences, in front yards, on clotheslines, in trees and on ladders. Some of the finest artists in the region will be in attendance. Residents often describe the Gifford Lane Art Stroll as the “Grove the way the Grove once was.” Neighbor Nathan Kurland, a central organizer of the event for the past eight years, says, “As far as I can tell, the Gifford Lane Art Stroll is Coconut Grove.”

“The thing is,” says Trina Collins, a painter and one of the founders of the Stroll who lives on the block, “at lots of arts festivals, artists are primarily interested in just having their work seen. But at the Gifford Lane Art Stroll, artists come to sell. The price is right. The quality’s good. You see tons of people going up the lane with a new treasure tucked under their arm.”

It is a freewheeling art marketplace. Sculpture, portraits, seascapes, landscapes, jewelry, tile mosaics, large abstract paintings, photography, mixed media, found art objects, and several art forms that as yet have no names—it is all here and readily available.

Each year artists apply to the Stroll to be included and each year there is a waiting list. A request also goes out to artists for submissions to be considered for the annual poster. The entire planning committee of 30 residents selects the winner. This year’s honor goes to multi-award winning artist Eileen Seitz, a NYC-born, long-time Groveite. Eileen’s artwork is seen internationally and is visible throughout the Grove—from her hand-painted Ambassador kiosks in the Village Center to her collaborative contribution to the Children’s Mosaic of glittering underwater tilework on the side of the U.S. Post Office here.

The live music at the Stroll provides the perfect soundtrack for the afternoon—when it is loud, people dance in the street; and when it sways gently, people chat and stroll the lane. It is nonstop good times. This year, featured performers appearing for their sixth year at the Stroll will be regional favorites, the high energy folk rock tunesmiths Solar Dogs. Band members are Eric Wagner, Zip Robertson, Bill Kunz, and Robert Grabowski. Solar Dogs strikes the perfect tone of sweetness and good vibrations that the Stroll crowd loves. Who could resist dancing when these lads light it up?

Coconut Grove music legend Bobby Ingram will be performing his wonderful solo vocals and guitar. Bobby has performed with David Crosby, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jimmy Buffet, Fred Neil, Gail Garnet and many others. We are truly honored to have Bobby back performing at the Stroll. Also featured this year will be popular Grove musician Ronnie Brooks in his first Stroll appearance.

Each and every year, the Gifford Lane Art Stroll gives away all of its profits to Coconut Grove charities. A percentage of every piece of art sold, and all of the proceeds from contributions for the now-famous (written about in The New York Times, Miami Herald, and The Miami New Times) cucumber punch, not to mention substantial funds from the sale of delicious food selections goes directly to charity. Over the last sixteen years, the Stroll has donated all of their money– more than $40,000– to two Grove charities, the St. Stephen’s AIDS Ministry and the St. Alban’s Child Enrichment Center in the Grove Village West.

The true heart and soul of the Gifford Lane Art Stroll are some thirty neighbors who each year meet over potluck dinners to undertake all of the many small details that make each year a success. Everyone is a volunteer, including Founding Director Trina Collins. This year, Barbara Tejada, an oil painter and herself director of the Grove House Artists, is the Art Stroll Facilitator responsible for coordinating all of the details of the event with Trina Collins and Velvet Rothe, the Stroll’s government relations coordinator.

Peggy Quattro, a marketing professional who volunteers with the Stroll, says there are many art forms included in the Gifford Lane Art Stroll, but one of the most important is “the art of commun-ity.” Participating artist, Uta, says, “I can’t think of a sweeter party that fuses art, music and joy.” Jugglers and a bounce house are always big draws for families with children.

This year, for the first time, will feature free monitored bike valet parking sponsored by Bike Coconut Grove on the swale at the intersection of Gifford Lane and Oak Avenue. Simply leave your bike with the bike valet, take a numbered ticket (the other half of the ticket is attached to your bike), and enjoy the Stroll knowing your bike is being watched in a secure setting.

The 17th Annual Gifford Lane Art Stroll will delight those in attendance on Sunday, March 1st, from 12 until 5:00 p.m. in Coconut Grove under the beautiful trees among the welcoming artists along sweet Gifford Lane.

The Reunion: Exhibition Opening at Bakehouse Art Complex on Friday, February 13, 2015.

Audrey Love Gallery: The Reunion

“The Bakehouse Art Complex opened in 1987 in the former Art Deco American Bakeries Company building in today’s Wynwood Arts District, by a group of artists relocating from Coconut Grove. These artists founded the nonprofit Bakehouse Art Complex and repurposed the industrial building into working studios and galleries, ensuring a permanent venue for local artists to explore their creativity.

This exhibition celebrates the 29-year history of the Bakehouse, which has seen over one thousand resident artists and continued success as a stakeholder in the ever-growing Miami arts environment. The selection of artists included in the 2,600 square-foot Audrey Love Gallery show reflects the 29-year history of the Bakehouse and its role as an incubator for art careers – and the rise of the visual arts – in Miami over the years. Exhibition highlights include an opening reception, innovative art talk-concert hybrid presented in partnership with IlluminArts, a puppetry master class with Pablo Cano, and a closing reception. Confirmed artists include: Pablo Cano, Xavier Cortada, Veronica Garcia, Suza Talbot, Maggie Davis, Carrie Sieh, Patricia Schnall Gutierrez, Christian Bernard, Ross Ford, Beatricia Sagar, Luis Diaz, John La Huis, Tracey Hagen, Richard Labarbera, Juan Griego, Maria Sonia Martin, Robert Apfel, Marcos Valella, Gustavo Oviedo, Armando Chagon, Henry Mar.”

Photographs of St. Stephen’s Art Show on 2/15/15

St. Stephen’s Art Show on Sunday, February 15, 2015.

About St. Stephen’s Art Show:  “Art is in the Heart - What began as a hot dog and refreshment stand on St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church property during the weekend of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival has blossomed into a top ranked outdoor arts and fine crafts festival in its own right. Most recently ranked 8th in the country in Sunshine Artist Magazine’s “Best 200 Fine Art Shows”, the St. Stephen’s Art & Craft Show plays an important role in the South Florida Art Scene that takes place in Coconut Grove over all three days of Presidents’ Day Weekend.

The 2014 Show, held annually on Presidents’ Day Weekend, takes place Saturday, February 15th through Monday, February 17th, 2014 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. Visitors will enjoy the artwork of over 160 renowned fine artists and craft people, an international food court, children’s activity area, an authentic English tea room and musical entertainment, all on the shady campus of St. Stephen’s in the heart of Coconut Grove.

The Art Show is St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church’s longest standing cultural outreach event. Hundreds of volunteers from the greater Miami community help make the event a success. Beverage sales proceeds have allowed the Art Show to contribute more than $55,000 to the St. Stephen’s AIDS Ministry.

The Art Show plays an important role in helping St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church achieve its vision of becoming “The Heart of the Grove” by offering a variety of cultural, spiritual, entertainment and public service programming to the community. St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church invites all people to join in a life of worship, mercy, justice, learning and service.”

SOBEWFF Amstel Light Burger Bash 2015

Friday night, a friend and I had the chance to attend the SOBEWFF Amstel Light Burger Bash. Of course, being allergic to sub-par beer, we decided to check out the newest brewery in Wynwood, J Wakefield Brewing for some pre-gaming. Seriously, check that place out!

And while J Wakefield had what looked to be a pretty awesome food truck outside, what it didn’t have was a Ritz-Carlton beach full of awesome chefs preparing gourmet burgers! Oh, or the hot chicks, spectacular band, celebrities (yeah, I got my picture taken with Al Roker and Morimoto!), and thousands of people.

Honestly, you can see who won here. I was a little disappointed with the star power that I and other people love to meet (though not burger quality) compared to when I went in 2013. That year, Morimoto was there but was joined by Bobby Flay, Guy Fieri, Scott Conant, Michael Symon, Geoffrey Zakarian, Andrew, Zimmern, Anne Burrell, The Sandwich King, and more.

My favorite and the one I cast my vote for was Prime One Twelve (Prime 112). That burger was so juicy and cheesy and delicious! I also enjoyed Red Robin’s burger and Shake Shack too among a handful of others.

Anyway, here are some pictures! I hope to go again next year!

Eats & Beats 2015

Eats N Beats 2015 30

After an unplanned tour of Little Haiti in Miami last night, my wife and I gave in to technology and plugged in the address of The Moore Building in Miami’s Design District into the phone. After all, we didn’t want to be late to the second annual Eats & Beats culinary and musical event taking place from 7:30 until midnight!

Whew! Just made it on time, and someone was nice enough to leave a parking space right in front of the building for us. We met the organizers on the way in and then got started tasting some great dishes, sampling some terrific spirits and cocktails, and being entertained with some great music and ambiance.

The pink lights flashing on the very unique architecture of The Moore Building made me feel like I was back at a club in Paris I visited a few times in the 90’s. Eats & Beats took place on all 4 floors, which each have a 360 degree balcony overlooking the center of the building. Pretty cool!

Eats N Beats 2015 8

We met some very nice people, both vendors and other guests alike. If I were forced to pick some favorites, I’d have to choose Chef Adrianne Calvo (who also made a spectacular dessert at the Five Cubed event a few days ago), the food from Segundo Muelle Peruvian Restaurant, Red The Steakhouse, Brother Jimmy’s, and Havana 1957. Oh, and the cupcakes from Ana Paz Cakes and Slice of Art!

And on the spirits side of things, I loved the Zafra rum, both on the rocks and as a cocktail. Not to be outdone were the terrific mojitos that the folks from Nikki Beach were making. Not only did both of those vendors make a great tasting drink, but they went all out with their presentation and overall experience.

Eats N Beats 2015 35

IT Espresso Lounge also made a very nice prosecco based drink, quite refreshing. And as the “beer guy,” I have to give a shout out to the only beer vendor there–Modelo! I personally would have like to have seen a few more strong brands, especially considering the emergence of craft beer on the Miami scene. But hey, that’s probably just me.

All the vendors were friendly, knowledgeable, and wanted to share their products with you. And to the army of people that made the event happen, congratulations! Can’t wait for Eats & Beats 2016!

Coconut Grove Art Festival on Sunday, February 15, 2105.

“Produced by the Coconut Grove Arts and Historical Association, Inc., a non-profit community organization under the direction of a board of directors and full-time staff, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival® showcases the works of 360 internationally recognized artists who are selected from nearly 1,300 applicants. Jurors evaluate the artist’s work and displays to select participants in such categories as mixed media, painting, photography, digital art, printmaking & drawing, watercolor, claywork, glass, fiber, jewelry & metalwork, sculpture and wood. Proceeds help fund year-round arts programs, which create a positive impact on our community and touch the lives of many throughout the year. Recent initiatives include the “New & Emerging Artists” category, which allows artists ages 18-29 to not only display their work for the very first time at an outdoor fine arts festival, but also partake in a hands-on Arts Symposium and gain access to a carefully-matched Experienced Festival Artist in their genre.”

2015 Social Justice Table Community Gathering to discuss World Center project 3/13/15

2015 Social Justice Table Community Gathering to discuss World Center project
Social Justice Community Gathering
Friday, March 13th from 3:30 to 6 pm
Grand Central building
697 N. Miami Ave
Miami, FL 33136
For more information about the program, and to RSVP, please call 786 302 8842.

The Social Justice Table would like to invite you to our next Social Justice Community Gathering, where we will be sharing information about the different ways social justice organizations are effecting change and creating opportunities for low-income, minority communities in the Miami-Dade area.

The Social Justice Table is a network of organizations committed to building collective power to effect positive change in our communities. We realize that while many organizations in Miami-Dade County are committed to addressing injustice and inequality and creating prosperity and opportunity for everyone in our county, much of the work is being done in silos. We recognize that by working together we can be stronger and more effective.

If you are or want to become active in social justice work, as part of an organization or as a concerned individual, you should come to our gathering. We are going to be talking about the Miami Worldcenter, one of the largest urban developments in the United States, which will be built only steps away from our gathering, in the historic African American neighborhood of Overtown. Local elected officials and developers have been harshly criticized for signing a deal that does not create real prosperity for the people of Overtown. Come hear about the efforts underway to ensure the long term interests of local residents are met.

Our partners are working on a number of other issues and campaigns, including efforts to raise the minimum wage, end violence against women and girls, passing responsible wage ordinances, protecting immigrant families from separation and harassment, addressing state violence against minority communities, and many more.

Be a part of the discussion. Create and participate in collective efforts to ensure that justice, equality, prosperity, and opportunity reach everyone in our community, and not just a handful of people. We hope to create collective power to ensure collective gains. Please join us.

We’re so excited to present a selection of works by an extraordinary artist Alicia Viera. At 96 years old Alicia, continues to create art everyday as she has since she was a young girl studying at Cuba’s legendary San Alejandro Fine Arts Academy. We hope that you will join us on Saturday, February 21 during the Bird Road Art Walk to meet the artist and view her works.

The exhibit features a selection of figurative drawings and paintings from the 1950s to present day. Some of the work still bears a Cuban seal authenticating the artists ownership and granting permission to take it out of the country.

But the focus of Viera’s exhibit is her pictorial language of geometric abstraction and her exploration and mastery of new mediums. Bold, fluid, geometric forms and undulations of her previous work on paper and canvas are reinterpreted and presented in the form of ceramic sculptures, boxes and wall hangings.

All work is available for sale.

MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art is one of the founding members of the Bird Road Art Walk that is held on the third Saturday of each month.

The Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum Set To Host Community Discussion On Stand Your Ground and the Use of Mug Shots In Target Practice and Police Relations In The Community

Community Leaders and Activists To Discuss How Community Can Help Improve Relations With The Police

MIAMI, FL, February 17, 2015 – The Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum (BPPCM) will host a panel discussion on Tuesday, February 24th, from 7-9:30pm. The topics will include the Stand Your Ground law, recent use of mug shots in target practice and overall police relations in the community. The BPPCM is located at 480 NW 11th Street,Miami, Fl. The moderator for the evening is Dr. Jimmy Brown (Chief Jimmy Brown), retired Miami-Dade Division Chief and the host of Hot Talk on Hot 105 for the past 25 years. The distinguished panel includes State Senator Dwight Bullard (District 39), Florida State Representative Shevrin Jones (District 101), Retired Lt. Archie McKay (BPPCM), Bishop James Adams (St. John Institutional Missionary Baptist Church), Troy E. Wright(Executive Director, Trayvon Martin Foundation) and Rene T. Gordon, Esq. The #Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum is a major place to visit for local, national and international tourists to learn about the accomplishments and struggles of pre-Civil Rights black officers.

In 1944, the Miami Police Department began a new era in law enforcement hiring the first five African-American police officers—Ralph White, Moody Hall, Clyde Lee, Edward Kimball, and John Milledge—who served and protected the Central Negro District now known as Overtown, Liberty City and Coconut Grove. Because of segregation, the officers could not operate out of the main Miami Police Station. So, they policed by walking and riding bicycles. There are even stories of arrested prisoners being taken to jail on bicycle handlebars, or by walking and even hailing rides from citizens driving by. They had no cars, no radio contact and, most of all, no headquarters, until 1950 when renowned Miami architect, Walter G. DeGarmo, designed the first and only Black Precinct and Courthouse in the nation. Today, it’s the only museum of its kind in the country.

The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Retired officers like Lt. Archie McKay, who served in the facility when it was a precinct, regale guests with stories and challenges of law enforcement during segregation. On the weekend, the museum becomes the backdrop for Vegas-style, Ball & Chain Weddings where couples “tie the knot” during ceremonies that are unique, fun and inexpensive.

The Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum is a 501©3.

Visit http://historicalblackprecinct.org for directions and more interesting facts about the venue and weddings.

Public Art Wednesday: Food for Thought

Today, we thought that we would point out the parallels of art and food. Both work to bring people together. Restaurants are if designed from a community concept have the ability to showcase curate and act as the biggest supporters or our local artists. We really appreciated the spread that was done for Art Basel back in 2013. Enjoy

Where To Eat: Art Basel Miami Beach 2013

Here’s what not to miss during Art Basel, food-wise

The Art Of Eating (clockwise From top left): Wynwood Kitchen & Bar (featuring art by Shepard Fairey), the scene-y Cecconi's inside Soho Beach House, fried chicken And waffles At Yardbird Southern Table & Bar, the under-the-radar but highly recommended Mandolin.

It’s that time of the year again: every fashionable East Coast-er has either booked or is frantically trying to book a flight to Miami this week for partying and socializing under the sun. And there’s the art. To prepare you for Art Basel  — the massive annual art fair on Miami Beach, and the dozens of other fairs and one-off events and marketing ploys that pop up around it— here’s a list of great places to eat. In addition to the art, the fair has become known for pop-up nightclubs, restaurants and cafés. Here’s a look at some of our favorite spots (new and old) not to be missed this year, split up by your own priorities.

Go For The Food:

Lorenzo
1776 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, FL 33139
(786) 483-1796
We’re big fans of Tony Mantuano, a Midwestern chef and restaurateur best known for Chicago’s Spiaggia, but who also happens to run the best pop-up restaurant each year at U.S. Open time in Queens (that’s tennis, not golf). Now, he’s (ahem) taking his talents to South Beach with Lorenzo, a new 200-seater right in the heart of the action (and inside the new Redbury Hotel), serving up a crowd-pleasing menu of Tuscan classics, handmade pastas and pizzas out of the wood oven. Plus, an ambitious cocktail program and high-end design.

Mandolin Miami
4312 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33137
(305) 576-6066
Mandolin is a mecca of Aegean cuisine in Miami’s Buena Vista district (not far from Wynwood, where Art Basel activities will be in full-swing). This quaint, out-of-the-way spot features fresh, light Turkish-Greek cuisine that’s still hearty enough to fuel you for the night’s debauchery. Don’t miss the grilled squid and the house white sangria. When you need a break from the fairs and the partying and want to focus on food and friends, this is the place to do it.

Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink
130 NE 40th St, Miami, FL 33137
(305) 573-5550
One of the first to move into Miami’s now–ultra glam Design District, Chef Michael Schwartz’s iconic restaurant continues to be one of the city’s premier dining destinations — and its toughest reservation during Basel. If you’re not seen here breaking bread (and exquisite farm-to-table fare) with VIPs at some point during the week, you haven’t made the scene. The MGD team’s newer Cypress Room, also in the Design District, features a $139 côte de boeuf for two, so art world players will be sure to add a stop to this artfully designed restaurant to their schedules as well. And Schwartz now runs the restaurant at the Raleigh,Restaurant Michael Schwartz, for excellent outdoor dining on South Beach, and will return with his pop-up at Design Miami on the beach as well (more info here).

Garcia’s Seafood Grille & Fish Market
398 NW North River Dr, Miami, FL 33128
(305) 375-0765
Tired of the Basel scene? Hop into a cab for a short ride to the Miami River for a meal at Garcia’s Seafood, a long-running spot where locals flock for seafood and atmosphere. The Cuban family-run seafood joint has been serving some of the freshest fish in town for over 40 years.

Yardbird Southern Table & Bar
1600 Lenox Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 538-5220
Yardbird offers some of the best fried chicken around, a touch of the South in a southern city that’s about as far from Dixie as Nova Scotia. Its Lincoln Road proximity makes it a convenient draw for a realiably awesome dining experience.

Buena Vista Bistro
4582 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33137
(305) 456-5909
Tucked into the quiet Buena Vista district, just a stone’s throw away from both Wynwood and the Design District, is Buena Vista Bistro. Book a table at this a quaint French restaurant serving traditional fare, including an array of housemade pâtés and mousse, and escape from the scene alongside the coolest and most down to earth Miami locals.

Go For The Scene:

Wynwood Kitchen & Bar
2550 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33127
(305) 722-8959
Situated adjacent the Wynwood Walls, a graffiti heaven with walls tagged by the likes of Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf and Futura, Wynwood Kitchen serves Latin-inspired cuisine in a casual open-air environment, right in the middle of the Wynwood Art District. It also ups the ante during Basel, hosting special showcases for street art, including this year’s “Women on the Walls,” with big names like Claw Money, Lady Pink and Martha Cooper,” and a tribute to recently passed owner Tony Goldman curated by Scharf, Tony’s Oasis.

Cavalli Restaurant and Lounge
150 Ocean Dr. Miami, FL 33139
Scheduled to open just in time for Art Basel, the bi-level restaurant and lounge will “reflect the Cavalli signature beacons of excellence: fashion, food and design, and will offer the ultimate in luxury and sophisticated exclusivity,” according to Roberto Cavalli himself. The restaurant will, most likely, also provide Paris Hilton and Mike Tyson sightings, for better or worse.

A Little Bit Of Both Worlds…

Cipriani Downtown Miami
465 Brickell Ave, Miami, FL 33131
(786) 329-4090
Miami newcomer Cipriani Downtown has quickly garnered a huge fan base in South Florida. The legendary Venetian restaurant offers the same menu as its New York locations, with classics such as the Carpaccio Alla Cipriani, baked taglialini with Praga ham and of course, the iconic bellini.

Cecconis
385 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33140
(786) 507-7902
Situated in Miami’s Soho Beach House, Cecconi’s is the place to go for consistent Italian cuisine, served in a relaxed, open-air environment. Be sure to make a reservation well in advance, as the Basel crowd will surely be taking the hotel and club by storm.

Hakkasan
4441 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33140
(786) 276-1388
Next door to Soho Beach House is the legendary Fontainebleau Hotel, the debut American location for the world-renowned Cantonese restaurant. Don’t miss the dim sum lunch menu available on weekends.

Lure Fishbar
1600 Collins Ave, Miami, FL 33139
The wait is over! Josh Capon is opening the long-anticipated branch of his trendy NYC seafood spot Lure tonight, December 2nd. Located in the Loews Hotel, the restaurant will dish out raw and cooked seafood, as well as Capon’s famous burger, four-time winner of NYC’s Burger Bash.

Michys
927 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, FL 33138
(305) 759-2001
Be sure to make time for a stop at Michy’s, Miami golden girl, Chef Michelle Bernstein‘s namesake. The long-time Miami native was one of the first chefs to take a leap of faith and set up shop in Miami.

Pop-Up Specials

Michy’s Miami Beach Pop-Up
Miami Beach Botanical Garden, 2000 Convention Center Drive
Miami Beach, Florida
(305) 759-2001
Chef Bernstein is staying busy this year, with not one, but two pop-up restaurants. Michy’s Miami Beach will reflect the same spirit as her Biscayne gem, serving creative contemporary American fare with a menu created exclusively for the pop-up.

Garden Café By Michelle Bernstein
Miami Beach Botanical Garden, 2000 Convention Center Drive
Miami Beach, Florida
(305) 572-9444
The Garden Café is a one-stop-shop for salads, freshly made sandwiches, hot plates, soups and exquisite baked goods.

Maison Ladurée
1108 Lincoln Road Miami Beach, FL 33139
Maison Ladurée, known for exceptional French pastries and macarons, will be collaborating with artist Will Cotton, who developed a macaron with ginger-infused whipped cream, among other creations.

Talk About it Tuesday: ArtsBiz Blog: Arts Mean Business Forum Highlight Miami Arts Week 2.17

artforwho

There is a lot of thoughtful speak going on about art as business in our communities. In respect of black history month, lets honor and have a conversation, about art and profit for who?

This blog was shared from the Arts & Business Council of Miami.

____________________________________________________________

The 2014 edition of Art Basel week in Miami featured the perfect marriage of arts and business. The city was alive with high-end private parties; pop up exhibitions and roving ads on cars, scooters and even people. Millions of dollars in art sales, restaurant meals, hotel rooms, and luxury car rentals exchanged hands. Beyond the dozens of satellite fairs and thousands of gallery booths catering to collectors, Miami Art Week offered a far more compelling benefit for businesses eager to court potential clients. Pacesetters from all industries and brand power houses swooned at the reach of art week. Developers, financial investment companies, tech start-ups, luxury car brands and more cleverly leveraged the arts as a strategic imperative for business. These companies know the arts mean business.

During Art Week, the Arts & Business Council of Miami hosted an Access Breakfast Forum with the Beacon Council to discuss how the arts are transforming Miami and why the creative industry matters to business. Donna Abood, Chair of the Beacon Council, Miami’s official economic development partnership, welcomed participants and thanked sponsors. Laura Bruney, President and CEO of Miami’s Arts & Business Council opened the program with some astonishing facts. The arts industry in Miami-Dade has a 1.1 billion dollar impact and employs 30,000 full time workers. More than 13 million people participated in the arts this year and thousands of business professionals shared their skills as volunteers and board members. Cultural tourism, a major component of brand Miami brings 5 million visitors each year.

Featured speaker, Robert Lynch, President and CEO of Americans for the Arts kicked off the program talking about how the arts bring a competitive advantage to companies that are involved. He has worked for more than 38 years to empower communities and leaders to advance the arts in society. Under his direction, Americans for the Arts has become a leader in documenting and articulating the key role played by the nonprofit arts and culture industry in strengthening our nation’s economy. Nonprofit arts organizations are employers, producers, consumers, and key promoters of their cities and regions. Most importantly for today’s discussion they are valuable contributors to the business community.

The flash of transformation in any city is culture and art. Collaborations between arts and business enhance quality of life, especially in cities like Miami. He praised our vibrant cultural community. “I was immersed in art from the moment I stepped off the plane and walked through Miami International Airport which was filled art installations and marvelous art. Every time I come there is something new and I am always energized. Miami is a 24 hour city. As I was returning to my hotel at midnight last evening a lot people were just leaving to start their night.”

There’s always been tension between involvement with the arts and the need for the arts. There is a movement going on in our country that is shining a spotlight on the competitive advantage the arts provide to business. “Business support for the arts isn’t a charity; it’s an investment that creates shared value through mutually beneficial partnerships.” He outlined the value the arts bring to business including brand empowerment, leveraging connections with clients and consumers, professional development that encourages innovation and creativity, and enhancing the workspace. Involvement with the arts is good for executives, clients, shareholders and employees.

Mr. Lynch also talked about the BCA 10, Americans for the Arts awards that recognize 10 businesses for their exceptional involvement with the arts that enrich the workplace and the community. Hallmark Cards was a recipient this year. At the awards ceremony in October, their CEO, Donald Hall said “As the highest expression of the human spirit, the arts give form to profound insights and bridge cultures and generations. They stimulate creative thinking and create vibrant communities for us all…Hallmark sees the arts as a source of renewal and inspiration for our employees and our business.” Extending partnerships to span all industries and fostering collaboration is building the new economy of ideas.

Following Mr. Lynch’s inspiring talk our impressive panel took center stage. Ms. Bruney introduced each panelist and asked them how their organizations are connecting with business and the community.

Sonja Bogensperger, team leader for business development, real estate and marketing for the Miami Downtown Development Authority was instrumental in starting Downtown Art Days. “The arts are a critical component in the transformation of downtown Miami. The arts touch all aspects of the urban lifestyle we have created – residents, business professionals, business owners and tourists are all impacted in a positive way” Around the country boomers and millennials are abandoning the suburbs for the urban lifestyle. Downtown Miami has truly become an international center for arts and culture. “In its third year, one of our signature events, Downtown Arts Days grew from 50 activations in 2011 to over 200 this year. The population of downtown Miami has doubled and now has a critical mass of arts, it is essential.”

Suzette Espinosa Fuentes, Assistant Vice President for Public Relations at the Adrienne Arsht Center spoke about how they are creating a town center. Their strong partnership with Miami-Dade schools brings every fifth grader to the center to attend a performance of Rock Odyssey, an innovative show sponsored by the Knight Foundation and local businesses. “This unique cultural experience is building our audiences of the future. It’s the perfect example of how the arts renew the spirit, create transformational experiences and leverage partnerships. Arts in education is adding the A to STEM to make STEAM and foster creativity and ingenuity in our next generation.” In addition, the center hosts a free Family Fest four times a year that brings the community onto the plaza and into the center for free performances and activities. The Arsht Center has become a town center because the community wanted it and fostered it.

Leann Standish, Deputy Director for External Affairs at the Pérez Art Museum Miami talked about the museums first year and announced that the museum welcomed more than 300,000 visitors since opening in December of 2013. “Fostering community involvement the museum offers free admission the second Saturday of each month. Sponsored by Target, the free admission offer leverages marketing and outreach to bring visibility to the museum and its programs.” This is a great example of the win-win partnerships Robert Lynch discussed. Innovative programs and compelling events are developing a community of arts aficionados. The building, with its expansive terraces and sweeping bayfront views is a work of art itself. Ms. Standish encourages Miami’s corporate community and entrepreneurs to approach them about partnering. “I see a lot of opportunity and feel we’re only just beginning to see the best of those relationships in Miami.”

At the YoungArts Foundation, an organization started in 1981 by Lyn and Ted Arison to recognize young cultural talent around the U.S., Vanessa Leitman oversees marketing, events and alumni relations. Their new downtown campus is in the historic Bacardi building. The foundation partnered with the company and their donors to buy and preserve this iconic landmark. They do an incredible amount of outreach, recently partnering with Miami’s classic Hotel Inter-Continental on their YoungArts awareness day and hosting performances by YoungArts alumni at the Epic Hotel’s new Lilt lounge. “Arts in education is critical to developing strong creative talent.”

Beacon Council President & CEO Larry Williams closed out the morning on a high note sharing the impressive economic impact figures for Miami-Dade’s creative industries. Mr. Lynch summed it up the breakfast forum best by saying that extending partnerships to span all industries and fostering collaboration is building the new economy of ideas in Miami.

The Record Man World Premiere at Miami International Film Festival 3/10/15

A note from your Publisher: A little known fact is that I worked for Henry Stone for 10 of the 12 years I have lived in Miami. Stone was in the music business in Miami for well over sixty years. The name “Soul Of Miami” was actually inspired by the Miami Soul music from Henry Stone’s many record labels. I was privileged to be involved in helping to recover thousands of lost tracks recorded in Stone’s Miami (Hialeah) studios in order to re-release them on iTunes, other popular download services and, of course, henrystonemusic.com.

Henry passed away in 2014, but leaves a worldwide legacy of amazing music. His story is the story of music business history, both in Miami and worldwide. His influence was felt throughout the world as a hit-maker and innovator, but his name is little known because he was a behind-the-scenes guy, preferring to give the credit to others.

Now, a movie documentary about Henry Stone and his place in musical history is premiering at the Miami International Film Festival! See it at Regal Cinemas South Beach on March 10th at 7:00pm. Directed by award winning, Miami-based filmmaker Mark Moormann, this is a movie that is not to be missed! BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW

Before there was a music business there was Henry Stone, who shaped and catapulted the sound of 1970s Miami into the mainstream with his unique hit-breaking label TK Records and affiliates. Stone started out in the music distribution business which led him to establish his own independent music label which he ran from a warehouse in Hialeah.

TK Record’s first big international hit was George McCrae’s Rock Your Baby in 1974, one of the songs credited to starting the disco revolution. The hits kept coming and by the end of the 1970s the label had several #1 songs in the Billboard Top 100 chart like Get Down Tonight and That’s The Way (I Like It) by KC and the Sunshine Band and Anita Ward’s Ring My Bell. Not long after the disco era was over TK Records went bankrupt, but Stone still had one last piece to add to the Miami music sound puzzle when he helped release what would become the first million seller freestyle hit record Fascinated by Company B and the rest is legit Miami music history.– Andres Castillo

The 12 Nights Electronics and Music series welcomes Jarek Kapuscinski, an innovative intermedia composer.
Jarek Kapuscinski is an intermedia composer and pianist whose work has been presented at New York’s MOMA; ZKM in Karlsruhe; Centre Pompidou in Paris; and Reina Sofia Museum in Marid, among others. He has received awards at the UNESCO Film sur l’Art festival in Paris, VideoArt Festival Locarno, and FNCNM in Montréal. He was first trained as a pianist and composer at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and expanded into multimedia during studies at the University of California, San Diego (1992-1997). Currently, he is Assistant Professor of composition and intermedia at Stanford University.

Kapuscinski is a musician, but his music is audiovisual. “It is made of sounds and images and more importantly with their relationship over time. I am interested in the emergent in-between – the intermedia,” says Kapuscinski. His pieces indeed emerge from the formalization of the elemental and the pure. “The piece is finished not when there is nothing more that I can add but rather, when there is nothing left to be removed. “ He believes in a thoughtful process of elimination of non-essential elements, aspiring to achieve a transparent and spacious form, that can generate complex emotional response. It is through the synthesis of complexity and simplicity that the stepping stone narratives (made of simple, haiku-like moments) mediate a rich experience. Kapuscinski is not shy to express positive feelings of joy, love, wholeness, goodness and transcendence. “I embrace everyday, familiar emotions and musical language that invokes them. There is richness and profoundness to be found in the common and seemingly simple.”

The program presents a retrospective of Kapuscinski’s works. It stretches from Mondrian Variations, an early work that defined my interest in composing with sounds and images both conceived simultaneously, “painted on a single canvas” to Where is Chopin a recent fascination with micro-expressions in faces of people from around the world as they listen to music. The first one was a result of rather solitary process while the latter involved travel to 12 different countries and private one on one sessions with over 150 people.  Each of the works has a rich story of its making. Having no space (or time) for that, I can probably say just a few words about the creative interests that unite them all.

Following the outstanding response to our first grants seminar back in July of 2014, we are following up with an exciting opportunity to meet representatives from three of the main funders in Miami, the Miami Foundation, the Knight Foundation and the Department of Cultural Affairs. This is a rare chance to hear directly from the grantmakers and ask them all your questions.

Did you know that individual artists can receive grants without being a charity organization? That is right, there are grants out there available to artists directly. Come and learn what the grantmakers are looking for and how best to approach them with proposals. Approaching foundations often seems overwhelming and intimidating, but grants are actually managed by people who want to help you do great things for the community. We are going to introduce you to the real people who really work at these institutions so that next time you go to apply, you will have a friend on the inside.

Music Monday: Cuba’s Los Van Van on the go, coming to once-hostile Miami

MIAMI BEACH, Florida (AP) — Los Van Van, one of Cuba’s greatest dance bands, once made history of a sort just by playing in Miami, overcoming city attempts to ban the concert and braving thousands of enraged protesters to put on a concert in the heart of anti-Castro activism.

Now the group is returning to a different, less polarized Miami as part of its fifth U.S. tour, just as the Obama administration is easing a half-century of restrictions on Cuba, making travel to and from the island easier.

“Times have changed a lot,” said Samuel Formell, the group’s leader, during an interview with The Associated Press.

Formell’s father, Juan, created an exciting new style of Cuban dance music that has influenced generations of musicians, even as he was widely reviled among Cuban exiles who saw him as close to the Communist government and circulated videos showing him shouting “Viva Fidel!” Both Fidel and Raul Castro sent floral offerings to his funeral when he died last year at age 71.

Anti-Castro exiles and city officials battled to keep the group from performing in Miami in 1999.

Then-Mayor Joe Carollo referred to the group as “the official Communist band of Fidel Castro” and some 4,000 anti-Castro activists turned out to protest their appearance, hurling eggs, batteries and insults at concert-goers.

In this Jan. 22, 2015 photo, Samuel Formell, a musician with the Cuban band Los Van Van, responds to a question during an interview in Miami Beach, Fla. Los Van Van, one of Cuba’s greatest dance bands, once made history of a sort just by playing in Miami, overcoming city attempts to ban the concert and braving thousands of enraged protesters to put on a concert in the heart of anti-Castro activism. That atmosphere has eased as the generation torn from Cuba for political reasons has gradually been joined by children and grandchildren curious about the island, and by new waves of Cuban immigrants who have come for economic rather than ideological reasons.

Things have changed for Los Van Van as well.

The group’s new leader said Cuba needs “an urgent change, an urgent change to save that country.”

The first change, he said, should be fully ending the U.S. embargo. And after that, he’d like to see changes that the Castros have vowed never to make: “that there could one day be another party, that there could finally be free elections and whoever wins the elections stays.

“That things open a little more, that there is freedom of the press too, and of communications in general … all those things that work normally in the world and are not normal in Cuba.”

Still, he said the band has never been about ideology.

“Juan Formell worked to make music. He never got into politics,” the son said.

“I don’t think we’ll make political lyrics, something that speaks of tensions … We’ll continue being the same: Van Van to enjoy.”

The 47-year-old percussionist said his father’s inspiration remains strong, nothing that he authored several of the songs on the group’s new album, “La Fantasia.”

“What we want,” he said, “is for the music of Los Van Van and of my father to reach places it’s never reached.”

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run presented by Verizon, a three circuit 5K (3.1 mile) Run Walk, will once again wind its way through the streets of Downtown Fort Lauderdale. Known as “Florida’s Largest Office Party”, the run is open to employees of businesses, corporations, government agencies, financial institutions and non-profits – regardless of company size – and incorporates a special competition to award the overall men’s, women’s and co-ed teams in 20 different industries. Beginners can “ease into exercise” with friends and gain inspiration and motivation to continue walking and running to improve overall health, while competitive runners have the opportunity to shine amongst their co-workers and lead the corporate team to victory. As part of the tri-county race circuit, a portion of the proceeds from the Fort Lauderdale run will benefit United Way.

Since its inception in 1985, the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run Series has grown to include more than 33,000 participants and attracts more than 1,200 South Florida companies.

NOTE: Entry fee is $40 per participant. No registrations accepted after March 5, 2015.
