Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and The Consulate-General of Japan in Miami are proud to present Japanese Kaiju Toys and Contemporary Art, an online lecture that will premiere on NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s YouTube channel on Thursday, July 9 at 6:00 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public and all those interested in viewing may register at www.nsuartmuseum.org/event.

Hosted by Professor James B. Levy, Professor at Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law and a longtime collector of Japanese kaiju toys, this virtual presentation will explore the history and cultural impact of the kaiju – an array of fictional giant monster-like characters that have transcended Japanese culture to become hugely popular among science fiction fans, artists, scholars, and folklore lovers around the globe – in toy form. The lecture will also delve into how these colorful collectibles have changed how many define art and how it is collected.

First depicted during the 1960s and ‘70s in Japanese television shows, these giant monsters were usually shown battling super-heroes trying to save cities from destruction. Their quick rise in popularity prompted Japanese companies to produce an array of soft vinyl monster toys based on their characters. Decades later, these kaiju collectibles were rediscovered by collectors including influential artists, musicians, designers and writers who were attracted by their fanciful, creative designs and wild, psychedelic colors, and are responsible for starting the urban vinyl collector movement, which has been embraced by artists like KAWS, FriendsWithYou, Kenny Scharf, Yoshimoto Nara and Takashi Murakami. Some of these artists are currently being featured in NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s Happy! exhibition, recently extended through August 30.

Reaffirming its commitment to make contemporary art accessible, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to feature two Miami Herald Pulitzer Prize winners – photojournalist Carl Juste and columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr. – as part of its free, virtual “Conversations at MOCA” series on July 8. The two will be discussing “I am a Man,” Juste’s newly installed public artwork on the MOCA Plaza. Donnamarie Baptiste will serve as moderator of the conversation.

In 2008, while working on a newspaper story with Pitts, Juste captured the image of Memphis sanitation worker Elmore Nickelberry and his son, Terence, with a placard that read, “I Am A Man.” Carried during the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike in 1968, these signs became emblematic of the Black community’s struggles in the United States. Commenting on his portrait of the elder Nickelberry, Juste has said, “I just wanted to capture that dignity that was often deprived him.”

The panel will consist of the following:
• Carl Juste has been a photojournalist for the Miami Herald since 1991. Juste was born into a politically active family in Haiti. After being forced to leave their homeland in 1965 for political reasons, his family eventually settled in Miami’s Haitian community. In addition to photography work for the Miami Herald, Juste cofounded Iris PhotoCollective (IPC). IPC’s members are photojournalists of color who document people of color’s relationship to the world. In 2019, Juste opened the IPC ArtSpace in Little Haiti. He is currently producing a book and exhibit titled, “Havana, Haiti: Two Cultures, One Community,” which consists of photographs and text that explore the bonds between Cuba and Haiti.
• Leonard Pitts was born and raised in Southern California. He was awarded a degree in English from the University of Southern California at the age of 19, having entered school at 15 on a special honors program. Since 1995, he and his wife have lived in Bowie, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C. Pitts’ work has made him an in-demand lecturer. He maintains a rigorous speaking schedule that has taken him to colleges, civic groups and professional associations all over the country. He has also taught at a number of institutions of higher learning, including Hampton University, Ohio University, the University of Maryland, and Virginia Commonwealth University. In the fall of 2011, he was a visiting professor at Princeton, teaching a course in writing about race.
• Donnamarie Baptiste will serve as moderator of the conversation. Baptiste is a producer, programmer and curator of art and culture who has worked with art fairs, galleries, artists, arts organizations and brands to produce exhibitions, site-responsive events, and experiences that connect audiences nationally and internationally. She has held roles with Photo Miami International Art Fair, Art Basel, Creative Time and The Armory Show. Baptiste is experienced in working with artists of multiple genres including Theaster Gates, Xu Zhen, Robert Longo, The Roots, Wangechi Mutu, Jason and Alicia Mora, and Ebony Bones. She also has worked with brands such as Lexus, Armani, Veuve Clicquot, BMW, LVMH, Cartier, Mercedes-Benz and American Express. Born in Trinidad and Tobago to musician parents, Baptiste has spent most of her life between Florida, New York City and the U.S. Virgin Islands. She studied Humanities in the Caribbean and later moved to Miami and New York City. Currently, she is back in Miami providing arts and culture management consulting to national and international clients while supporting the local art community as a board member of Oolite Arts.

MOCA North Miami’s exhibitions and programs are possible through the generous support of the City of North Miami and its mayor and council; the State of Florida; Department of State and its Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture; the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council; the Miami-Dade County mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

This comprehensive solo exhibition is made possible through a CIP Grant awarded to Yochi Yakir-Avin by The Broward County Cultural Division. Additional support is provided by the exhibition host venue, The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Due to safety restrictions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the bi-level solo show will be experienced through a 360 degree interactive tour accompanied by virtual programming. In the event that the Frank reopens to the public between June 25 and August 8, In Between will be accessible to the public in person as well. As complementary community offerings, a video tutorial workshop on Transfer techniques and a virtual musical performance will be offered online during the exhibition.
In Between is a retrospective presenting select works created by Yakir-Avin between 2015-2020. The exhibition reflects her technical education in Israel and Italy, and displays Yakir-Avin’s ability to communicate clearly through both figuration and abstraction. Her command of multiple media and techniques is demonstrated through oil paintings on canvas, mixed media works on paper and wood, and sculptural pieces that walk the line between art object and everyday furnishings.
Conveyed via a masterfully limited palette, her subjects are framed against swathes of monochromatic color and emphasize notions of mood, place and implied narrative. Within her intimate mixed media pieces on paper and wood, the artist draws creative inspiration from her past and allows her memories to weave together to drive her practice forward. Through a tangible sense of vulnerability embedded in each of her works, the artist aims to offer hope, comfort and peace to the viewer – resulting in a subtle message of optimism that is necessary at all times, particularly now.

Business for the Arts of Broward’s (BFA) 6th Annual Art & Soul event, which moved to a virtual format due to COVID-19 in May, has been extended for three more months. Art from local artists can now be purchased online through August 31.

Juried artwork sized at 12″ x 12″, 20” x 20” or 30” x 30” are specially priced from $200 to $500.

Since the virtual Art & Soul kicked off, several pieces of art have been sold including to buyers from California to New York.

Art & Soul is just one of several ways BFA supports local artists while fostering cultural vitality, creative success and economic development. BFA continuously supports the local arts community and promotes local artists, cultural non-profits and diverse art-related projects. BFA annually hosts several events in addition to Art & Soul, including the free Arts Mean Business speaker series, Art in the Workplace, Art Curation and Art+Stroll.

The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, recognized as Broward County’s premier shopping destination, has announced Fender artist and Latin Grammy Award winner Manny Diquez as its next featured performer on Happy Hour with The Galleria, a virtual music series, scheduled for Thursday, June 18, at 5 p.m., on Facebook Live. He will perform a variety of alternative, classic rock and popular covers from Oasis, Cat Stevens, Stevie Wonder, The Spin Doctors, The Beatles, REM, Bob Marley, Gnarls Barkley and Ben E. King.

Born in Trinidad & Tobago, raised in Venezuela and living in the United States since 2004, Manny Diquez is a versatile musical artist who has recorded more than 30 albums, many in both Spanish and English. He has won two Latin Grammy Awards as a musician and arranger in 2011 and was a 2012 Latin Grammy artist nominee for “Best Rock Song.” Diquez served as music director for networks including Univision and Telemundo and is a voting member of the Grammy Academy Awards and Latin Grammy Academy Awards. When he’s not in the studio. Diquez is a touring musician.

As shoppers and diners adjust to new social distancing guidelines, The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale’s Seasons 52 Chef Elvis Bravo returns to the all-access Facebook Live on Tuesday, June 9, at 2 p.m., for his next Cooking with The Galleria free virtual tutorial series segment. Bravo will livestream and prepare The Perfect Starters: Avocado Toast, Maryland Style Lump Crab Cakes and Preserved Lemon Hummus.

He currently also plays with some of the biggest names in South Florida such as Nu Deco Ensemble, Nicole Henry and The Spam All-stars as well as doing many other gigs and sessions. Aaron’s newest release “141 Layers of Ikigai” is out August 2019 and is his strongest yet!

Esta breve pieza teatral intenta descubrir las relaciones más profundas de dos seres inmersos en una relación amorosa insatisfactoria, que los lleva a buscar sucesivos amantes. La obra es una reflexión sobre el amor, la pareja, los compromisos amorosos y la manera de reinventar las relaciones. Join us to revisit the classic work by Harold Pinter, “El Amante,” all from the comfort and safety of your home. This short play attempts to discover the deepest relationships of two beings immersed in an unsatisfactory love relationship, which leads them to search for successive lovers. The work is a reflection on love, the couple, commitments of love, and the way to reinvent relationships. Immersed in a perverse game, the couple invents, out of boredom, seduction games that will end up confusing reality with fiction and rushing them towards an unexpected end. With performances by Marilyn Romero and Julio Rodríguez, under the direction of Pedro Balmaseda.

These stage readings will take place in Spanish. In collaboration with MarGi Happenings, and thanks to the support of the Cultural Affairs Department of Miami-Dade County and the State of Florida. With a voice filled with grit and soul, Carly Jo Jackson brings the heat of the Florida sunshine to all she does. She has a vocal tone that is as infectious as her charismatic stage presence. She caught the attention of some big names in the music and entertainment business, opening shows for Michael McDonald (who also provided vocals on her recent EP), Kenny Loggins and Dennis Quaid and serving as a musical inspiration to Jeff Bridges who recently featured her on his Sleep Club website. Other notable performances include her 2014 appearance on America’s Got Talent, where she appeared in two televised episodes and advanced to Judgement Week; performing as an Emerging Artist at 2018’s Summerfest; singing backup vocals to Kenny Loggins at 2019’s Hawaii Songwriters Festival; performing at the renowned 30A Songwriters Festival along with Jason Isbell, Brandi Carlile, Shawn Mullins, Livingston Taylor and more; opening a San Francisco 49ers game; and winning the 2015 Belk Southern Musician Showcase. The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) is launching a new, Miami-based project for local artists to showcase their talents. The project, titled SMDCAC Sessions, supports local artists in Miami financially, emotionally, and creatively during this difficult time.

The Center is reaching out to local performing artists who have an ongoing relationship with the center to perform a three to five-minute video performance that will be broadcast through the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center’s Facebook page.

SMDCAC will provide a guaranteed fee to each artist who participates as well as a call-to-action for audiences to donate to the artist or their cause during the performance.

The performer of the night is Siempre Flamenco. It was founded in 2002 by Celia and Paco Fonta as a not-for-profit corporation. They had the purpose of promoting awareness and preservation of the art and traditions of Flamenco. Paco and Celia Fonta are nationally recognized performers of Spanish flamenco song and dance.

The performer of the night is Albert Castiglia. Join MOCA North Miami for its Summer Camp Sampler! On Tuesday, May 26, MOCA is hosting Watercolors Gone Wild” where kids will create a composition inspired by wild animals using items around the house, on its Facebook Livestream.

This summer, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is offering a virtual contemporary art experience with free summer Virtual Art Camps. No Fear Art – Drawing Edition, led by nationally acclaimed artist Lori Pratico, is an exercise in relaxation and having fun in being creative. La obra presenta a un terrateniente hipocondríaco, lleno de tics y manías, decidido a pedir en matrimonio a la hija de su vecino. El divertido encuentro entre estos tres personajes, lleno de enredos y discusiones, llega a armonizar para concertar la boda en el clímax de una pelea constante.

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) is launching a new, Miami-based project for local artists to showcase their talents. The project, titled SMDCAC Sessions, supports local artists in Miami financially, emotionally, and creatively during this difficult time.

The Center is reaching out to local performing artists who have an ongoing relationship with the center to perform a three to five-minute video performance that will be broadcast through the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center’s Facebook page.

SMDCAC will provide a guaranteed fee to each artist who participates as well as a call-to-action for audiences to donate to the artist or their cause during the performance.

The performer of the night is Mr. Pauer (Toto González) is a Latin Grammy® Nominated producer and re-mixer born in the Caribbean city of Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela, based in Miami, FL. for over 21 years.

He is considered one of the pioneers in the new sounds of Latin electrónica receiving recognition for his debut album “Soundtrack” earning him a nomination for “Best Alternative Album” in the 12th annual Latin Grammy® Awards. He is a music connoisseur and researcher of percussive rhythms from around the world.

Join us for LIVE with Mainly Mozart, a unique series of seven free live online events. Occurring every Saturday from May 16 through June 27, 2020 at 4 p.m., these curated broadcasts will feature a stellar lineup of artists in performance and conversation, sharing behind-the-scenes insights, excerpts from past performances, and live musical moments. The events will feature librarian-curated exhibitions related to each performance and other elements designed to foster social engagement.

In response to this unprecedented time, each event will be simultaneously streamed live on multiple platforms: Mainly Mozart Festival website, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube channels. All viewers and participants will be able to experience the events live or on-demand.

Business for the Arts Broward (BFA) continues its Arts Mean Business Speaker Series (AMB) with the return of renowned graffiti artist Cey Adams as a free virtual event. Due to limited space, viewers who wish to attend the Q&A are required to RSVP at rvegas@bfabroward.org or call 954-940-5344 to receive the link.

Adams emerged from the downtown graffiti movement to exhibit alongside fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. The New York City native appeared in the historic 1982 PBS documentary Style Wars, which tracks subway graffiti in New York. He served as creative director for Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons’ Def Jam Recordings, where he co-founded the Drawing Board, the label’s in-house visual design firm, creating visual identities, album covers, logos and advertising campaigns for Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., Maroon 5 and Jay-Z.
Adams exhibits, lectures and teaches art workshops at the Smithsonian

AMB is just one of several ways BFA supports local artists while fostering cultural vitality, creative success and economic development. BFA continuously supports the local arts community and promotes local artists, cultural non-profits and diverse art-related projects. The Koubek Center couldn’t go virtual without bringing you music from some of our favorite local musicians! They’ll be presenting 30 minute unique musical performances on Instagram and Facebook Live, featuring talented Miami performers such as Venezuelan violinist Daniela Padrón.

Daniela Padrón adapts some of the most well known pieces of J.S. Bach into different Venezuelan Folkloric Rhythms including joropo, gaita, merengue among others.

She is a Venezuelan-American violinist, nominated to the Latin Grammy (2013) as the violinist of the acclaimed Venezuelan world music band Gaêlica, in the Folk Music Category.

She has appeared at some of Venezuela’s most prestigious halls, including Teresa Carreño Cultural Complex, Central University of Venezuela, and Lia Bermudez Arts Center. Daniela is a proud Orchestra Conductor of one of the Miami Music Project’s children orchestras. She also runs her private studio with local and international students.

United Way of Broward County’s Women United, a powerful network of women confronting head-on the most critical issues facing the Broward County community, is hosting its 9th Annual Magnolia Luncheon virtually on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. Col. Nicole Malachowski will participate in a virtual Q&A style discussion with the “who’s who” of Broward County women.

The event that recognizes women of dignity, strength and perseverance will take place from 11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The event’s co-chairs are author Susie Levan and April Lewis-Parks, Consolidated Credit.

All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit United Way of Broward County’s COVID-19 relief campaign to raise funds that will be used for two key areas, food assistance and emergency financial assistance.

Col. Nicole Malachowski, USAF (Ret.) defies stereotypes. She is a leader, a combat veteran, the first woman pilot on the Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron, a White House Fellow, and an inductee into both the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Women in Aviation International Pioneer Hall of Fame. Nicole’s distinguished 21-year Air Force career exceeded her wildest dreams, but the dream came to an end when a devastating tick- borne illness left her struggling greatly to speak or walk for almost nine months. An indomitable spirit, Nicole fought back against overwhelming odds and prevailed. Drawing on stories from her career and personal life, Nicole inspires audiences to rethink the challenges they face every day. She urges them to go beyond resilience and become resurgent.

Business for the Arts of Broward (BFA) has moved the 6th Annual Art & Soul to a virtual event for the community to support the arts and artists in our community.

Juried artwork sized at 12″ x 12″, 20” x 20” or 30” x 30” are specially priced from $200 to $500.

Art & Soul is just one of several ways BFA supports local artists while fostering cultural vitality, creative success and economic development. BFA continuously supports the local arts community and promotes local artists, cultural non-profits and diverse art-related projects. BFA annually hosts several events in addition to Art & Soul, including the free Arts Mean Business speaker series, Art in the Workplace, Art Curation and Art+Stroll.

• MOVIE DAY! • INVASIVE SPECIES (Tuesday, April 21 at 3 p.m.) – During “Jessica Harvey’s Expedition Notebook,” viewers will learn about the terrestrial and marine invasive species, the green iguana and lionfish. A discussion will focus on how they disrupt the ecosystem and what we can do to help. Dr. Harvey will then lead an art session focused on lionfish.
• MOVIE DAY! (Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m.) – Tiger sharks, their migration patterns and habitats come to life through the documentary “Tiger Shark Express: A Guy Harvey Expedition.” Dr. Harvey and Jessica will discuss interesting data collected from tiger sharks, cyclic migrations and dual habitat use, which will then be followed by a tiger shark painting session.
• INSHORE HABITATS (Tuesday, April 28 at 3 p.m.) – Following three short videos on mangroves and seagrass from “Jessica Harvey’s Expedition Notebook,” Dr. Harvey and Jessica will discuss mangroves and seagrass, global warming and coral reefs. The art session focuses on painting a manatee and redfish.

Artist and educator Edwin Hernandez-Mojica will livestream a miniMakers painting session where participants will receive step by step instructions to create their own miniMasterpiece inspired by the artist Claude Monet.

To follow along, you’ll need: Canvas (9” x 12” or 11” x 14”) (cardboard works too!), acrylics set, brushes (3 to 5, in different sizes), napkins or paper towels, cup with water, paper plate or palette, blow dryer and an old shirt or apron to stay clean (optional).

miniMakers are free workshops on the first Saturday of every month for kids ages 6–12, sponsored by the South Florida Auto Dealers Association. We are pleased to present the program to bi-weekly while the Museum is temporarily closed. The next class is on Saturday, May 2, 2020.

Mandated, statewide shelter-in measures have forced the Museum of Graffiti to shutter their doors, but the museum is maintaining a robust online presence ranging from daily art talks on IG live to downloadable graffiti coloring books.

The Museum of Graffiti’s opening for The ProCESs, featuring new paintings and drawings by famed NYC style master CES will be live-streamed on Saturday, April 18, 2020 at 5pm via ZOOM.

Visitors will receive an interactive tour through the exhibition while listening to a discussion of the work by CES and museum co-founder Alan Ket. Guests will be able to submit questions in real time and will also be the first to receive links to purchase newly released limited edition works. CES will be joined by a few surprise guests, famous friends, and collaborators. The live-stream opening party will conclude with a DJ set. To receive the ZOOM link, RSVP to RSVP@museumofgraffiti.com

“Although it’s important that we all make sacrifices right now, sheltering-in does not mean we have to give up on cultural offerings and unique experiences,” said Allison Freidin, co-founder of Museum of Graffiti. “Our hope is that our virtual art talks and exhibition openings bring joy and stimulation into people’s homes. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t crack a smile when they see CES’ clever polymorphic drawings.”

ProCESs, curated by Carlos Mare, will present a variety of the artist’s small-scale marker illustrations showcasing his fine art talent, and the large-format spray paint works on canvas that he is well known for.

Inspired by ordinary objects in the world around him, whether a landscape, still life or a grilled cheese sandwich, CES has delivered a portfolio of unique drawings with a variety of both overt and whimsical illustrations that show how adept he is as a draftsman with traditional mediums, pencil and markers. His namesake signature or “tag” is revealed within each image as a nod to his graffiti roots. Whether CES is spelled out in a drawing of couch cushions or sliced Wonder Bread, each piece highlights the artist’s imagination and sense of humor.

CES’ canvas works showcase what he is acclaimed for – “Wild Style” lettering. He is instrumental in furthering a style of jagged, aggressive and hard edge letters as opposed to the rounded or bubble style of classic graffiti lettering. His letter and design innovations have influenced an entire generation of new artists in the US and throughout the world.

Born in the Bronx in the 1970s, Robert Provenzano, professionally known as CES, began his career in the early 80s. Influenced by the first wave of original NYC street artists who created vast works of graffiti on subway trains and walls, he was instrumental in developing the streamlined and aerodynamic “Wild Style” alphabetic reconfiguration in contemporary graffiti that is seen today. CES has a reputation for fine details in his artwork whether it’s his name or in the thematic murals he executes, this translation from paper to canvas, to the streets is what makes him such an exceptional artist.

CES has collaborated with brands like Puma, T-Mobile, The Palms Casino Hotel in Las Vegas, Seamless/ GrubHub, Nickelodeon, Vans, Marriott Bonvoy, and Turner Broadcasting. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Source, Mass Appeal, Complex, Juxtapoz and TimeOut New York. Currently, he exhibits his work globally and is an active mural painter who was recently commissioned to paint an inaugural mural for the newly opened Museum of Graffiti in Wynwood Miami. He also premiered a solo exhibition of his unique collection of WU-TANG CLAN logo inspired drawings for the Showtime/Mass Appeal WU-TANG CLAN: of Mics and Men documentary.
