EXPANSE: An Exploration of the Uncharted Urban opens at the Williams McCall Gallery South of Fifth featuring emerging artists Bisco Smith, David McCauley, and Claire Kowalewski. Bisco Smith’s work is often described as “refined grime” — a blend of fine art, graphic design, and graffiti deconstruction. David McCauley is a mixed media artist based in Miami, FL. As a paralyzed artist, art has played an important role for David in overcoming tremendous personal challenges. David’s artwork is a wide-ranging collection of mosaics, design, symmetry, typography, and photography. Claire Kowalewski is a high-distinction Caldwell Scholar at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). The 2014 La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup X, the world’s largest and most prestigious Beach Polo competition, culminated on Sunday, April 27th with an exciting men’s final that marked the tournament’s Ten Year Anniversary, a decade of world class cavalry and social fun in the sun.
Thursday, April 24th opened with a series of hard fought matches during the competition’s first day of the La Martina South Beach Women’s Polo Cup VI, as female teams battled it out to claim the prestigious title.
The eight teams of women, consisting of players from all over the world, competed in two divisions of play for the sixth consecutive year with the team from La Martina (Scarlet Davenport, Maggie McNamara and Laura Willson) taking top honors in Division One with a 2-1 win over the Eden Roc/Cheeki team (Kaila Doud, Slaney O’Hanlon and Lynn O’Connor). Doud was named MVP while Laura Willson’s “Little Joe†received Best Playing Pony honors.
FontaineBleau Aviation (Lynda Mariano, Sabina Barnett and Kerstie Allen) won Division Two in convincing fashion, in a 7-1 defeat of the Jet Blue team (Coco Smith, Bobette Martin and Leah Masters). Kerstie Allen scored all seven goals for FontaineBleau Aviation to earn MVP honors in her division, with her horse “Kai†taking Best Playing Pony honors.
The opening match of the tenth annual La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup men’s competition on Friday, April 26th saw a parity in the 2:00pm match with The Raleigh team representing Pakistan beating the La Martina team, representing Argentina, in the final seconds, 11-10. Heightening the excitement on the day, the 3:00pm match up had the Yellow Cab team, representing Russia, defeating the talented Metropolitan by COMO team, representing USA, in a triple overtime shoot out, resulting in a 7-6 score. In the final game of the day, the Merchant Hub team, representing Brazil, saw Luis Escobar scoring nine goals, including a pair of 2-pointers, for a 10-8 victory over the Eden Roc/La Herradura team, representing Mexico.
Some fast paced action on the sands of Miami Beach on Saturday set the scene for Sunday’s finals of the 2015 La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup with the team from The Raleigh Hotel, representing Pakistan (2-0), and the team from Yellow Cab, representing Russia (2-0) making their way to the finals of the competition’s 10 Year Anniversary.
Pakistan (Bash Kazi, Juan Monteverde and Brandon Phillips) opened Saturday’s action with an 8-7 win over a plucky Metropolitan by COMO team, representing USA (Lance Vetter, Guille Usandizaga and John Gobin), winning their second match in two days and securing a place in the finals. In the day’s second game, the team from Yellow Cab, representing Russia (Tyler Garber, Tavi Usandizaga and Sebastian Merlos) spanked the Eden Roc team, representing Mexico 13-8. It was Russia’s second win that paved the way for their appearance in Sunday’s title game.
The La Martina team, representing Argentina (MZ. Kazi, David Tafuri, Carlitas Gracida and Tommy Biddle) upset the team from Merchant Hub, representing Brazil (Tommy Kato, Pelan Escapite and Luis Escobar) run for the title by holding on for a 7-6 win in the final seconds of play.
Fifty-two chukkers of Polo on the beach ended with a flourish on Sunday afternoon as the Yellow Cab team representing Russia (Tyler Garber, Tavi Usandizaga and Sebastian Merlos) scooped an impressive 12-5 win over The Raleigh team representing Pakistan (Bash Kazi, Juan Monteverde and Brandon Phillips) in the final of the 2014 La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup. MVP Sebastian Merlos set the pace for Russia’s Yellow Cab with nine goals, including a two-pointer from one end of the arena, to lead all scoring.
Earlier in the day, the Merchant Hub team, representing Brazil (Tommy Kato, Pelon Escapite and Luis Escobar) won the Carl Fisher International Challenge Cup in an 8-5 win over the La Martina team, representing Argentina (MZ. Kazi, David Tafuri, Carlitos Gracida and Tommy Biddle). Pelon Escapite took MVP honors with teammate Luis Escobar’s “Geevo†being named Best Playing Pony. Attendees at this year’s La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup experienced the annual series of VIP events that took place each night and in to the early hours. Specialty cocktails courtesy of Perfect Vodka were served as players, patrons and sponsor representatives mingled at the Metropolitan by COMO, Baoli, Adore nightclub and SLS Hotel South Beach, as part of a very active after-hours social schedule. During the day on Saturday, La Martina showcased its latest lines of contemporary styles during an elegantly produced fashion show in the VIP tent. On Sunday, Lou La Vie presented Auto Art Miami, a curated installation of 50 of the world’s most significant automobiles, valued at over $100 million and installed throughout Collins Park for art lovers, enthusiasts and design aficionados to enjoy before, during and after the tournament’s match play.
The traditional post-event awards ceremony was held at the end of each tournament to celebrate the winning teams from both competitions, during which Robert Kiger, owner of Elegante Polo, presented the trophy to the women’s champions and Adrian Simonetti, president of La Martina, did the honors for the men’s.

Their works explore many facets of our cultural experience of nature in this World Heritage Site. In Flight, the Everglades are considered through aerial views of suburban encroachment, birds taking wing, the ethereal nature of wind, and even the stark contrast of nuclear missiles housed deep in the wilderness.

Renowned contemporary dancer Cédric Andrieux trained in France then spent years with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company before returning to France to join the Lyon Opera Ballet. He will perform identical concerts on April 25 and 26 at the Colony Theatre. Cédric Andrieux is a solo set on Andrieux by leading French choreographer Jérôme Bel. This work, created in 2009 for the Paris Opera Ballet, has since been performed throughout the world. In this solo, danced and narrated by Andrieux, the French-born dancer traces the arc of his development in and out of the studio and on and off the stage. His story begins with his early training as a contemporary dancer, then moves on to his time at a prestigious conservatory in Paris and continues through his professional life as a performer with the company and Lyon Opera Ballet. His droll narrative is punctuated with danced illustrations that include excerpts from milestone dance works, by Cunningham and Trisha Brown, as well as a humorous look at Cunningham’s rigorous daily class. The La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup X – a three-day men’s tournament celebrating its tenth year, starts on Friday, April 25th through Sunday, April 27th. Auto Art Miami Invites connoisseurs and collectors to display their privately owned automobiles from around the world in an ‘art meets design’ installation. The installation honors designers such as Ken Okuyama (Ferrari Enzo) Nuccio Bertone (Lamborghini Miura) and the Pininfarina family. Their automotive designs revolutionized the automobile and most importantly, art and design culture. Auto Art Miami will be one of the most significant art and design installations of its kind.

Enrique Flores-Galbis shows his latest series titled “Dreaming Havana: The Collision of Memory and Fact†at the Williams McCall Gallery South of Fifth. Kicking off with an artist reception that is open to the public on Saturday, April19th at 6 pm, the exhibit will run until May 6th. KOBRAND Fine Wine and Spirits is sponsoring the event and will debut a specialty drink from its new Coco line of Alizee.
Enrique Flores-Galbis is a landscape and portrait painter. Born in Havana, Cuba, he left in 1961 with Operation Pedro Pan, arriving alone in South Florida at the age of 9. Also a novelist, his award-winning book 90 Miles to Havana was based on the events that led to his departure and the life he encountered in the U.S.
Flores-Galbis explains, “This ongoing series of paintings began before the first return to my birthplace, my magnetic center, the island of Cuba. The first images, painted from memories, were tinged by the longings and emotions that this landscape evokes in the heart of an exile. After that first visit I started painting urban themes where the collision of memory and fact is the most violent. The bare buildings of Havana, bitten by the salt and wind have the look of paper-thin, brittle honeycombs. The clanging approach of an old Ford retrofit with a sputtering Fiat engine is unsettling but another worthy subject to paint if you want to address the intersection of nostalgia, history and cold fact. These images did not come into the studio fully formed and asking to be painted. Rather, they bubbled up and then coalesced into a narrative when these messy notions and feelings were plugged into, and then shaped by the physical constraints and peculiarities of my chosen media. The alchemic process functioned as both antenna and lightning rod to focus and materialize electrical impulses– memory and fact. Although each painting presented as a surprise, they were carefully tuned to create viable narrative structures that directly communicate rather than vaguely resonate.â€
Flores-Galbis received a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the Parsons School of Design in 1992. He has served on the Faculty of the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts for over twenty years and Parsons School of Design for over sixteen years as well as the Morris and Montclair Museums in New Jersey.
Flores-Galbis’ work can be found in corporate, university, and private collections throughout the country.

The MTV Staying Alive Foundation invites Miamians to a special performance by Freestyle duet Basside and a swimwear fashion show by La Belle Rebelle swimwear on Thursday April 24, 2014 @Haven Lounge South Beach
To mark AIDS Walk Miami’s 26th anniversary, The MTV Staying Alive Foundation will hold its annual fundraiser event on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at HaVen Gastro Lounge South Beach to raise awareness and funds to support the fight against HIV/AIDS in our community. MTV has supported numerous AIDS Walks across the country, and has raised over $450K since 2005 for the Miami’s AIDS Walk.
Event attendees will be able to enjoy a special performance by freestyle rap duet Basside, music by DJ Mauricio Parra, a swimwear fashion show and exclusive prizes provided by the girls of La Belle Rebelle. The fundraiser promises a night filled with cool prizes, fabulous entertainment and delicious drinks. Guests who contribute a charitable donation of $20 will receive one complementary drink, sponsored by Gulf Liquors and an entry for the raffle. Event-goers will also be encouraged to participate and register in the walk.
The MTV Staying Alive Foundation mission is clear – to stop HIV before it begins. To date, the foundation has supported 417 projects in 63 countries globally including a successful participation with AID Walks across the nation.

Maria Marin was a longtime South Beach resident, a local socialite as known for her wide circle of friends as her effervescent personality. Sadly, Marin recently passed after a year-long battle with melanoma and on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, HaVen Gastro-Lounge – one of Marin’s favorite spots –
will host a charity cocktail party in honor.
Hosted by longtime friend Dirk DeSouza, HaVen’s Mike Boles, Gary James, Stefano Santoro and Marin’s family, the event – taking place from 7-10 p.m. – will feature hors d’oeuvres by executive chef Todd Erickson, two complimentary cocktails for each attendee and music by DJ’s Joe Dert and Umber. A minimum $20 donation at the door is requested. 100% of dollars raised will go to melanoma research. Miami Dance Festival 2014 celebrates its 11th edition in honor of dance as an art form while encouraging innovation and presenting a diverse palette of dance works in an array of genres and styles. This year, the Festival will consist of eight events and one panel discussion (one of the events to be announced in March) with some of the nation’s most talented industry leaders. Established by the Founder & Artistic Director of Momentum Dance Company, Delma Iles, the Festival is a combined effort of her dance company and other dance companies such as The PGK Dance Project (San Diego, CA). Their combined mission is to move and inspire attendees with newly choreographed performances as well as the classics.
Momentum Dance Company will again perform last year’s hit High Tide, choreographed by Delma Iles. The jazzy, modern work demands high energy and stamina from Momentum’s dancers with fast footwork, unusual jumps and lifts as well as constant changes of direction. It premiered last February at the West Florida Dance Festival and made its Miami premiere on Momentum’s 2013 Spring Season at the Colony Theater.
Soloist Emily Noe is expanding her untitled work from last season to include a larger group of dancers, playing with ideas of ghosts and illusion. The exquisite music by Scriabin will be played by Dr. Alan Ngim, one of Iles’ colleagues at the Miami Dade College Department of Arts and Philosophy.
This year’s historic modern dance work is To the West, by modern dance pioneer Eleanor King. This powerful solo will be performed by Momentum veteran and principal dancer Barbie Freeman. It evokes a mountainous western landscape with high cliffs, and deep rivers. The human being is dwarfed and awed by its grandeur, but persists with a courageous pioneering spirit as she makes her way in this glorious new territory. Freeman is being coached by Dr. Andrea Seidel of FIU, who learned the work directly from its creator. King’s work is currently enjoying a renewed interest from dance writers and historians. The original piano score will also be played by guest artist Dr. Alan Ngim.

Come to the Edge is a 12-hour reading of the writings of Apollinaire, in partnership with the ArtCenter/South Florida and their monthly Studio Crawl. Twenty-four volunteers, one by one, will read the poetic works of this French poet, playwright, novelist and art critic throughout the day. Guillaume Apollinaire is considered the father of surrealism, having actually coined the term 100 years ago.

Roca Center, Lynn and Louis Wolfson, II Theatre when Miami City Ballet School – the official school of Miami City Ballet – holds special benefit performances by the recently formed MCB School Ensemble – a new 30-member performing troupe comprised of tomorrow’s stars of ballet. Tickets to the MCB School Ensemble Benefit cost $50 for Patron Level and $100 for Benefactor Level. The Ensemble, plus 20 additional Pre-Professional Division dancers, will perform George Balanchine’s ethereal Serenade, Marius Petipa’s beloved Sleeping Beauty, Act III, and two new ballets by former stars of Miami City Ballet – The Sunshine State by Gerard Ebitz, and Luna Del Mar by Maribel Modrono.
MCB School Ensemble was launched by School Director Darleen Callaghan in November 2013 to provide Pre-Professional Division dancers with invaluable live performance opportunities and to further enhance the artistic growth of its students. Some of these gifted young dancers were even seen on stage during the Company’s recent performances of Don Quixote. In addition, the Ensemble now anchors MCB’s signature youth outreach program Ballet For Young People and members of the troupe serve as ambassadors to the Company and School.

Mauricio Madrid – Estudiomau
The yarn goes as follows… Colombian-American painter estudiomau (rhymes with cow ) is constantly bridging the space between conventional 2 dimensional and kinetic 3 dimensional works. The work often welcomes the viewer to experience each piece using multiple senses. His paintings employ layers of colors on a variety of substrates ranging from canvas to reverse painting on clear acrylic panels. He uses his years of experience in various mediums to separate and create multiple planes. The subject matter commonly includes abstracted figurative focal points broken down to organic shapes and forms, depicting images and people he has encountered. He uses the backgrounds to compliment the subject in an expressionist infusion of emotion, color and, texture. Keeping to a maximum of 6 principle colors and mixing and blending on the final painting or surface he creates a palette that reflects the colors that surround him.

There will be many more to follow during her journeys in life. ‘There has been many words used to try to describe me and my style of art, music, ideas, methodologies and literature; honestly there aren’t any available that will give you a true idea of who I am and why I give some much passion and drive to whatever it is I have chosen to create. I have an undying love for all art forms- and I think that those who can use their minds and hearts to bring color and life to the world are phenomenal people indeed. The popular North Beach Bandshell concert series hosted by the non-profit Community Arts and Culture organization plans its next outing Saturday, April 12, 2014, beginning at 6 p.m., and this time featuring the emerging Cuban singer / songwriter Danay Suárez. Local “afro-galactic / psychedelic†jam sextet the Nag Champayons will perform in support, as well as the Miami chapter of the School of Rock plus guest DJ Ephniko Dialecto.
Suárez, originally from La Habana, Cuba, has been generating a buzz throughout Latin America and Europe with her soulful voice, razor-sharp lyrics and innovative musical style. Performing since the age of 15, Danay formed part of the Havana Cultura series, collaborating with various artists throughout the years. She has performed in European cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and Istanbul, and in Latin America, Mexico, Panama and Colombia. In addition, the singer / songwriter released her first album Polvo de la Humedad in 2008, which was followed by her Havana Cultura EP in 2010.
The Nag Champayons are a largely improvisational collection of musicians drawing inspiration from African, Caribbean, hip-hop, rock and jazz influences. The band released a self-titled EP in 2012 that features the single “183rd Street Flea Market†with guest vocalist Itagui from Locos Por Juana. The Nags hold a floating residence at the visually ethereal Hollywood, FL venue Mystic Water Kava Bar called Psychedelic Jazz Practice. The group is currently working on their next release which will feature the beat box and rap stylings of Komakozie and the Afro-Cuban inspired vocals of Tomas Diaz from the Spam Allstars.
Ephniko Dialecto is a bilingual songwriter, DJ and emcee originally from Columbia and now residing in Miami. His style has been compared to Mos Def, the Orishas and Damian Marley. A self-described “hip-hop educator/researcherâ€, he does workshops with youth programs at area festivals, juvenile detention centers and schools.
The School of Rock Miami is a youth program that teaches music and team-building in a band setting; they will be sending their house band to open the event.
The North Beach Bandshell is located at 7275 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, 33141. A Day at the Beach Concert Seriesis sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Bootstrap Tactics, Original Impressions, the Miami HEAT and Florida National University. Good friends and artistic cohorts Carl Cox and Nicole Moudaber are set to release their very first collaboration, a sonic onslaught dubbed “See You Next Tuesday.†The two-track release (the original plus a deep mix) will drop April 7 on Moudaber’s MOOD Records. As expected from these bastions of techno, the tracks are perfectly executed, and aimed squarely at the dancefloor. To celebrate their forthcomng release, Cox will join Moudaber’s ‘In the MOOD’ takeover during Winter Music Conference aka Miami Music Week this year. The massive pool party on Thursday, March 27 at The Raleigh Hotel will feature Moudaber and Cox, alongside NYC house music legend Danny Tenaglia, Kompakt producer Tom Peters, Saved Records artist Lauren Lane, and Traktor master ENDO providing the soundtrack for this daytime affair.
Cox has been a supporter of Nicole from the outset, releasing her productions on his Intec label (‘One Day Later’ and last year’s ‘Roar’ EP), commissioning remixes of his originals (2011’s ‘Chemistry’), and inviting her to spin alongside him around the globe, at his Carl Cox & Friends festival stages and Space Ibiza residency. The “Tuesday†project was Cox’s idea: He reportedly handed Moudaber a zip drive stating, “Right, we’re doing a collab and we’re putting it out on MOOD, but all I have is the bass loop." A few email swaps later, the track was born.

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts presents Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Sam Green with venerated indie rock band Yo La Tengo for an enthralling hour-long “live documentary†on R. Buckminster Fuller, the inventor, architect, futurist, engineer, and author most famously known for his creation of the geodesic dome. As a progenitor of such issues as sustainability and conservation, Fuller was also a proponent of radical societal change through design and architecture.
MDC Live Arts will present two back-to-back performances of The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., Saturday, March 22, at Colony Theatre in Miami Beach. Yo La Tengo will provide the live, sonically subtle and richly atmospheric, backdrop soundtrack for Green’s charismatic in-person cinematic narration as he delves deep into projecting film clips, photographs, letters, and blueprints from Fuller’s immense body of work.
“Fuller was ahead of his time, the values that his work and life encompassed are directly aligned with the global environmental movement of today,†said MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia. “Whether or not people are familiar with him and his design legacy they will be fortunate to experience his life’s work through this captivating and creative reflection by Green and Yo La Tengo.â€
A unique collaboration between two independent pioneers of film and music, The Love Song of R. “War Story†is the third film produced by an industry newcomer, Kreate Films, a local South Florida production company. The exhibition will include works by contemporary designers and artists such as pieces by Isaac Mizrahi, Manolo Blahnik and a velvet mirrored evening jacket by Elsa Schiaparelli will also be on display, alongside dresses by Yohji Yamamoto and Iris van Herpen, among others. Conceived as a kind of exoskeleton and created through the use of computer programs and 3D printing, Van Herpen’s polyamide dress gives the appearance of a skeletal form and was presented as part of the designer’s debut collection. These pieces from the world of fashion will be juxtaposed with film and video works by Sam Taylor-Johnson and Greta Alfaro, photographs from Pinar Yolacan’s Perishables series, and Ori Gersht’s Blow Up, a large scale photograph of an elaborate floral arrangement based on a nineteenth-century still-life by the French painter Henri Fantin-Latour, captured at the moment that it explodes.

A pinnacle in pasta history, Thursday, March 20th is National Ravioli Day and Café Prima Pasta is celebrating with free Fiocchi Rapera bites for every patron.
Upon arrival, guests will receive a complimentary Bellini made with fresh peach puree and authentic Italian champagne followed by an individual Fiocchi Rapera, a homemade pasta purse stuffed with Asian pear and an array of gourmet cheeses tossed in a truffle sauce with crispy prosciutto.
In addition, dinners can enjoy a wide variety of homemade ravioli on the menu including pasta pockets filled with crabmeat and finished with a creamy lobster sauce ($18.95) and spinach and ricotta ravioli in a rich vodka sauce ($16.95).
There is something exceptional in the air at the Fontainbleau. In addition to the lavish perfumes of the gorgeous gold diggers and the pretentiousness of the millionaires, there is also this intoxicating energy that imbues one with feelings of regal and sexiness. Walking through the doors and into this haven of plush indulgence seems to elevate the resort’s patrons. We finally got around to trying the fabled Scarpetta that our foodie circle raves about and took the tongue plunge. The ambiance was exalting, the service impeccable, the soundtrack melodic and the food was great too.
After promenading past the seductive bar and the beautiful people drinking at it, we were seated in a luxurious dining area. Before we even ordered our fare a tasty basket with an assortment of fresh bread was delivered along with stellar eggplant dip, oil and butter. It came hot, crispy and moist straight from the oven. The favorite was a concoction of thin sliced salami layered into the bread with tomatoes.
We started with the acclaimed Creamy Polenta and it was better than we ever could have imagined. Polenta is cornmeal that is boiled into a porridge. Scarpetta serves it next to a bowl of fricasseed (cut up, sautéed and braised) truffled mushrooms. What makes this treat so freakishly deliciously special is that the polenta is cooked for three hours, which dissolves ALL of the grains. This process transforms it into this uber creamy and deliriously superb delicacy. It possesses an amazing consistency that simultaneously dazzles and soothes the mouth. The Hedonist preferred it without the mushrooms, so you might want to stop the server from mixing the two after it is bestowed upon your table and try it both ways.
For our second app we had the Diver Scallop Crudo, with fennel orange and pine nuts. This minuscule plate was refreshing and light with a hint of sweetness.
We started the main course with the Duck and Foie Gras Ravioli with a marsala reduction. The diminutive pasta purses were loaded with ample duck and foie with a scrumptious sauce and a generous portion. While the foie was not on par with the French versions that transports your palate into Nirvana, it was still a solid dish.
The only letdown of the night was the Black Taglioni with stewed baby octopus and basil bread crumbs. The dish looked resplendent but was truly uninspiring. It consisted of just one flavor note and was fairly bland. When our gracious waitress asked us how everything was, I responded in my usual brutally honest way that the taglioni was disappointing. She asked if we wanted to switch it out, but not wanting to make a fuss, we politely declined. A couple minutes later the manager arrived and profusely apologized and demanded that we substitute out the taglioni for their famous spaghetti. This is a true staple of a fantastic restaurant, where unadulterated customer satisfaction is paramount. They had no idea we were bloggers and still insisted on optimizing our experience, kudos Scarpetta.
The Spaghetti with tomato and basil is what vaulted Scarpetta aloft to its world renowned fame. They use some of the finest pasta imported from Italy and one can taste the difference. It was cooked to utter perfection al dente (firm, but not hard). It was thick substantial noodles, yet soft enough to twirl around your fork and tongue. These delicately firm noodles just feel so amazing to bite into. The sauce was nice, not overpowered by the tomato and contained some depth from the fresh basil. It is not a rich dish and is fairly simple on the taste spectrum, but it is just done right as a perfect plain spaghetti dish was meant to be.
To consummate the meal, we had the Coconut Panna Cotta with caramelized pineapple and guava “soupâ€. This was a fun dessert that made dining feel more like play. The underneath the “sweet and tart†soup was a deceptively thick custard, so when you dipped your spoon into it, you found yourself surprised at the resistance. It was definitely addictive as all the flavors harmoniously blended together into an ambrosial sugar rush. The tiny cookie (tuile) on top was simply divine.
Since one dessert is rarely enough we also ordered the Coffee Semifredo with hazelnuts, anise cream and lemon sorbet that was a brilliant treat. The hazelnut was at the forefront with a subdued cafecito taste entwined into it. The highlight of the dish was a ridiculously poignant lemon sorbet that will energize your face from its sheer flavor strength. I am not sure what goes on in that kitchen but it felt like the sorbet had some adderal or cocaine in it. I scooped up a bit to put on my teeth to see if I could get a lemon numbie but to no avail.
Scarpetta provided a truly luscious and gratifying experience, draped in provocativeness. The service and presentation were splendorous, demonstrating that they will go above and beyond when it comes to making sure its customers are satiated and satisfied. We definitely were.

The Little Lighthouse Foundation’s 5th annual Hearts & Stars Gala: Beyond Macau (“HS2014”) will be held at the $40 million Miami Beach estate of Bill Dean.
HS2014 tickets are for a limited time $175 and include unlimited premium cocktails all night (including Ketel One, Johnnie Walker, Don Julio, Ron Zacapa rum, Antica Fratta Franciacorta sparkling wine and Italian wines provided by Tita Italia Imports, as well as beer from Dos Equis and FIJI Water). The MIA Music Summit will bring together innovative music and tech entrepreneurs, record executives, music journalists, hackers and musicians to share and build new ideas in the digital music space. MIA Collective will host the event with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
The inaugural event will be held at New World Center in Miami Beach. The conference aims to establish Miami as a hub for digital music startups by connecting the South Florida technology and music communities with each other and global leaders. In addition to Knight, the event is supported by Gold Sponsors Senzari and Choose Digital, and Silver Sponsors .CO, SESAC Latina and Mobile Roadie.
“The MIA Music Summit is another reflection of the diversity of budding entrepreneurs contributing to the momentum of Miami’s startup community,†said Matt Haggman, Knight Foundation program director for Miami. “By showcasing and fostering local talent, the event provides an incentive for further growth, while attracting new ideas to this emerging space.â€
The summit will host speakers from prominent companies including Cory Ondrejka, vice president of engineering at Facebook; Martin Varsavsky, founder of Fon; Eric Sheinkop, co-founder and CEO of Music Dealers; Mahbod Moghadam, co-founder of Rap Genius; Marc Zimet, Viacom vice president of music and talent; and Alfonso Perez-Soto, senior vice president at Warner Music. Discussions will address topics at the intersection of music and technology, such as crowd funding, Big Data, social media, music and branding, music licensing and next generation music hardware. Some of the hottest music startups from around the world, such as Splice, Wahwah Networks and Jukely, will also demo their projects. In addition, there will be high-tech music performances by Nagual Sounds, winners of Midemlabs 2014, and Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics.

The MIA Music Summit will also host the MIA Music HackDay from March 22-23, which is open to technologists, engineers and programmers. The music hackathon will be held at The LAB Miami in Wynwood, which is a co-organizer of the event. Special prizes for the best use of APIs will be awarded from Choose Digital, MusicGraph, Senzari and 3scale. The hackathon will close with Miami’s first “Startup Battle of the Bands,†in which local startups will showcase their digital musical talents. Live music performances from a variety of Miami artists and others can be expected throughout the weekend.
Derrick Ashong of Fusion, the Miami-based Univision-ABC channel, will emcee the event. Ashong has joined forces with “Made in the Lab,†a new Miami-based advisory service for tech startups, and Stan Jakubowicz, an award-winning filmmaker, to create THINC (Technology in Harmony with Narrative and Creativity), a multiplatform series of town-hall conversations with leaders, artists and innovators. THINC’s first guest will be Cory Ondrejka, who will be interviewed by Ashong at the event in a town-hall conversation format, which will be webcasted live. In addition, THINC will document Ondrejka’s experiences as he visits Miami—from judging the hackathon and interacting with the local developer community, to the in-depth town-hall conversation.

We launched December 4, 2011 with a concept and goal to feature local artists in a way no one had before. Now, after 26 months, featuring over 125 artists and well over 5,000 works of art displayed digitally, the longest running artist digital exhibition in North America will feature its closing exhibition and final unique presentation featuring Circ X, a boutique based interactive company, and one of the Knight Arts Challenge recipients.Founded and created by Diana Andrew-Lozano, we couldn’t have chosen a better featured artist or company to round out what has been a hard but worthwhile effort to provide a platform for local artists in South Florida to exhibit their unique works of artistic expression the past 2 plus years.
This will be an evening of celebration combining our standard signature recipe/fusion of the ARTS, MUSIC, CULINARY DELIGHTS, AND MIXOLOGY, which we’ve consistently provided the last 99 previous exhibitions leading up to this historical 100th exhibition. We’ll also be spearheading a fundraiser benefit for Circ X.

5th Annual Wildfox Model Beach Volleyball at Lummus Park on Sunday, February 9, 2014. For more than two decades, Miami resident Mark Leventhal has been on the decks at some of the best venues and parties in South Beach. Today, Leventhal lays in a coma at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
His younger sister, Amy Leventhal, says that he went to urgent care last Wednesday because long-term pain in his back had become unbearable. They sent him to the hospital, where doctors found an infection in his body and brain and put him directly into intensive care (ICU).
Leventhal does not have health insurance so his sister started a fundraising page to help pay for his care. (courtesy Miami.com)

ScreenDance Miami is a new Tigertail project. The festival highlights Miami-based choreographers, movers and filmmakers who are working with emerging and new concepts in regard to movement and dance on film and dance on camera. ScreenDance Miami is comprised of screenings, panel discussions, workshops and site-specific installations. The festival films were selected by ScreenDance Miami festival director Marissa Alma Nick, following an open submission process. Screenings will also include a program of selected Open Submissions on Friday evening, January 24, and Invited Submissions on Saturday evening, January 25.
Opening Night screenings at Miami Beach Cinemateque will feature Another Building – a series of three narrative dance films, Savoneta, Quarantine and Kasita, by choreographer and filmmaker Gabri Christa. Kasita is the third film of the series and will be premiered at the festival. The remaining ScreenDance Miami events all take place at Inkub8.

Art Basel has come and gone, but the Collins Park Neighborhood Association has tagged into the Bass Museum’s Beats after Sunset to offer additional arts and cultural experiences on Miami Beach once a month. ArtScape, will take place on the first Friday of each month starting at 6pm at 7 locations west of Collins Avenue featuring venues that boarder or are on Liberty Avenue, the new “Art Street†of Collins Park.
This is a First Friday soft opening of what will build month-by-month adding additional locations, local artists, musicians and specials to the lineup. Local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, bars, art galleries that will be participating in the monthly ArtScape will include Moreno’s Cuba at The Riviera South Beach, Anthony Liggins Gallery 88, Boulan Hotel, South Beach Hotel, Sweetwater Beer Garden at the Asonia/Plymouth Hotel, the Miami City Ballet and Avant Gallery.
On January 3rd, the first ever ArtScape will begin at Moreno’s Cuba at the Riviera South Beach on 20th Street and Liberty Avenue with authentic live Cuban Jazz music, $10 Bespoke Rum drinks and $1 mini Cuban Sandwiches.
Right across the street Anthony Liggins Gallery 88 will be presenting the exhibition “Invisible Muse” featuring intricate glass sculptures by Abby Modell and dreamy abstract works by Anthony Liggins. The gallery will also have on display and available for purchase Tribeca Trunk’s gorgeous line of accessories from US & International contemporary designers. Other locations participating in ArtScape including the new Sweetwater Beer Garden will have various artwork on display as well as drink specials.
Closing out the evening from 8pm-11pm, The Bass Museum’s monthly Beats After Sunset party where there will be live music by DJ George Owen, cocktails by Reyka Vodka and the newest museum exhibitions.

Shakespeare said, “The play’s the thing.” The Miami Design Preservation League says play’s the theme-of the boffo Art Deco Weekend that fills Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive and all contiguous byways.
Even if you’ve been to all 36 previous ADWs, you don’t want to miss Art Deco at Play; it’s chock-a-block with new features like:
The Antique Experience in Lummus Park.
Indoor and outdoor movie venues.
A dance-worthy lineup of bands after dark playing jazz and standards of the Art Deco era.
Tours de force. Get to know “The District” on a 90-minute guided Art Deco walking tour, but don’t stop there. There are bus tours that cover more territory and more history than you can on foot. There are drinking tours and eating tours, tours of Lincoln Road Mall and of Art Deco pools, a nature tour and a pre-automobile tour. Check the schedule and sign up in advance.
All your favorites! Count on all the events you love about ADW: the Arf Deco parade and awards, the gleaming antique cars lining Ocean Drive, the booths that beckon with irresistible aromas and dazzling displays, the speakers whose expertise enlightens all things Art Deco.

ADW is more than a street fair, and this year it gives the antique shows a run for their money. In fact, the best of the antique dealers are hosting the Antique Experience.
Two climate-controlled tents in Lummus Park at 11th Street will house “Modernism: Live on Ocean Drive” and “Antique Lifestyle: Sneak Preview for the Miami Beach Antique Show.” Look for vintage furniture, art, clothing and accessories circa 1925-1945. At 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, hear from the expert: Modernism’s Ric Emmett lectures on “Modern American Design.” Check the list of Art Deco and Antique vendors here.
Admission to events at the Antique Experience is free. The tents and a formal garden are the venue for period movies Friday and Saturday evenings. Things heat up considerably both nights when the lights go down and red-hot mama Sarah Jane and her Blue Notes turn the garden into a juke joint … or maybe a Harlem nightclub. If you can sit still, you just aren’t trying hard enough!
But play’s the theme, and that means kids. ADW brings out the kid in everyone with toys, toy talk, displays of long-forgotten toys and lots of opportunities to play. The Playground Stage at 13th and Ocean offers live entertainment for actual kids from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The film series at the Art Deco Welcome Center appeals to anyone who has ever been a kid: “The Wizard of Oz,” Shirley Temple flicks, even “Little Rascals” shorts. Also at the Welcome Center, a display of vintage toys (some of them interactive) and a gen-u-ine 1935 Christmas Day living room.
A bit more cerebral are lectures at the Wolfsonian on “Iconic Playthings with Historic Style” and “Childhood Memorabilia of the Art Deco Era.” But not too cerebral; there will be toys on hand and an opportunity to ask about that prized possession you’ve had since you were a kid.
You can even play a live version of the classic game Monopoly called “Decopoly”. Thats right, Ocean Drive will be turned into a giant “Decopoly” Board. All you need to do is pick a program guide and follow the instructions and you could win some big prizes like a Jet Ski Tour for Two or a trip to the Bahamas! Also, be sure to look for Shirley Temple at the Art Deco Weekend festival, take her photo and hashtag #SobeShirley (there will 8 of them – all different shapes and sizes). Post all eight and you could win some cool prizes!
Of course we’ve saved the best for last: The event poster, winner of the 2014 ADW poster contest, perfectly captures the spirit of Art Deco at Play. A 1930s melange of glamour girls, muscle men and gamesmanship in playful pastels, it tells you in a glance that this is gonna be one whoop-de-do weekend.

Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), produced and presented by Miami Dade
College, partners with Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival to kick-off Lee Brian Schrager’s Culinary Cinema film program with a screening of Soul of a Banquet during the Wine & Food Festival. The Festival duo will bring audiences a delicious pairing of film and food. The Sunday night movie screening with take place at the Miami Beach SoundScape, a soaring 7,000-square-foot projection wall that is a part of the New World Center.
Soul of a Banquet is the deeply personal story of Chef Cecilia Chiang, by Hong Kong-born, San Francisco-based filmmaker Wayne Wang. Both Wang and Chiang will be present for this Festival-first event. Food-world notables Ruth Reichl and Michael Murphy will moderate a Q&A after the screening. Chiang is known for introducing America to authentic Chinese food with the opening of her internationally renowned restaurant The Mandarin in 1961. After graduation from FIT, she worked closely with Rosita Hurtado where she perfected her detail techniques and developed her signature style. OKO, Carnets de Russie/The Other Russia is a series of short films shot in Russia in 2012, focusing on the music of the ethnic minorities of this huge land. Far from the clichés we tend to have about the country, the films uncover rare music from the Caucasus republics of Ossetia, Chechnya, Dagestan, as well as from the Buddhist land of Kalmykia and the northern republic of Karelia. Vincent Moon will appear live through SKYPE for the Q&A at the end of the screening. His first visit to Miami in June 2014, will complete the retrospective and will culminate with a master class.

In November of 2010, Jody Christopherson and Michael de Roos formed the indie-folk-beatbox-rock band Greencard Wedding in Crown Height Brooklyn. In December of 2012, Michael’s visa ran out. He moved back to Holland and Jody and Michael discovered they couldn’t harmonize via Skype. But they could write a play. And music. . . and maybe get an artist visa. This transmedia musical is an exploration of the ways technology can enable us to transcend boundaries, uniting artists with each other and their audience. There is also cake. (Performed in English.)

A Journal of Insomnia invites insomniacs to collaborate in a web-based reflection on what keeps them up at night. This interactive documentary offers an utterly original encounter with a disorder that affects one in three people in the developed world. In September 2012, insomniacs around the world began sharing their stories on nfb.ca/insomnia. Thousands have contributed webcam testimonies, written accounts and original artwork—material that forms the heart of A Journal of Insomnia. The National Film Board of Canada will summon us to an appointment with sleeplessness that provides arresting new perspectives on contemporary existence and the anxiety that so often underscores our days—and our nights.

Rockodile Brunch at Lacoste in South Beach on Sunday, December 8, 2013.  The brunch was hosted by Fabian Basabe, Erin Newberg, Anthony Spinello and Alegria Beracasa and was joined by the Miami Heat’s own DJ Irie.  The art installation was inspirated from by the American crocodiles eating of rocks to help them dive and swim. This installation consists of more than 5,500 black rocks suspended in the shop’s window. The rock’s are made of 100 percent post-consumer materials .

Absolut Night Court, a showcase of Miami’s best Bloody Marys featuring unique recipes by a team of celebrated local mixologists. Oceanfront between 21st and 22nd street.
This December, Los Angeles-based artist Ry Rocklen unveils his installation Night Court, produced in collaboration with Absolut as the setting for a pop-up art bar during Art Basel in Miami Beach. Night Court is at once a bar, a performance venue, a sports arena and a showroom for Rocklen’s new line of furniture, ‘Trophy Modern’.
Night Court is the latest and most ambitious incarnation of a project that began in 2011 when Rocklen came across a haul of second-hand sports trophies for sale in a thrift store. Rocklen spends a lot of time in junk shops and flea markets, trawling for those objects that were once cherished but which are now almost at the end of their lives. In the purgatory of the second-hand store, these ex-possessions have one last chance to be valued again.
