Wynwod Brewing Co. is hosting a tap takeover at 180 Degrees on Tuesday, August 18th from 5-11 PM to showcase 7 craft beers. One of them will be a special concoction designed by Chef Ryan Martin and the local brewery made just for 180 Degrees. The unveiling will take place at 7 PM and beer is limited. Chef Martin has not given any hints to the flavor but, with his “gastronomy redefined” concept we can only imagine it will be something out of this world. Each day, 164 people lose their lives – many unnecessarily – due to improper care of pressure wounds also known as bedsores, a little-known area of medicine that is growing at an alarming rate with the rapid aging of our society.
Registered and licensed vocational nurses and those in related fields may earn continuing education credit and certification in the area of wound care by enrolling in weekend courses sponsored by the College of Long Term Care:

• August 26-28, 2015 – Miami, FL (Includes Skills Lab)
• September 9-11, 2015 – Los Angeles, CA (Includes Skills Lab)
• September 23-25, 2015 – Oakland, CA (Includes Skills Lab)
• October 28-30, 2015 – Dallas, TX (Includes Skills Lab)

“The growing problem of pressure wounds is especially challenging for nursing homes that have had to send their residents to specialty clinics and hospitals for treatment,” said Anvar, who also founded the College of Long Term Care. “This is especially costly when you factor in ambulance transportation, lifting and moving patients in delicate health, admittance to the hospital and surgical care. Also, the simple act of transporting patients can lead to the onset of additional pressure wounds. By teaching staff how to prevent such wounds and identify them at the earliest stages, we can reverse these troubling statistics.”
Weekend courses sponsored by the College of Long Term Care will reveal these basic facts about caring for wounds:

• Avoid excess baths (should only bathe for 3-5 minutes 2-3 times per week)
• Keep water temperature lukewarm – not hot
• Add bath oil
• Do not use most soap products as they contain detergent (Dove is the exception)
• Do not use washcloths
• Pat dry
• Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing and reapply 4 times each day
• Stay well hydrated
• Avoid caffeine, spices and alcohol

To enroll or for more information, call (866) WOUND-80 or visit http://www.skilledwoundcare.com/educational-resources/courses/

“THE PERFECT LIFE” MFA Exhibition

Living in suburbia, it is difficult to notice the many discrepancies between the romantic appeal of the perfect life, and the reality of living away from the city. The work shown here, is a small set of stories from actual women choosing to live in the suburbs, confronting unexpected issues, and dealing with roles and society’s impositions.
Printmaking allows me to mimic the idealistic communities of the suburbs by giving me the option of creating and playing with repetitive words and images, directly sending multiple messages to the observer. The purpose of these prints is to expose the unspoken issues, airing out skeletons in our closets.
This body of work is intended to open a conversation about changing or sharing roles within our own circles. Wether in suburbia or the city, women need to believe they have the ability to choose their paths and change their roles if need be, thus being able to direct their perfect lives.

Posi-Tone recording artist and composer Noah Haidu is evidence that 21st-century jazz can be adventurous, fresh and swing hard. He is an exciting, modern pianist who can play memorable melodies and soulful grooves. His powerful Posi-Tone Records debut SLIPSTREAM garnered rave reviews and 8 weeks in the top 50 national jazz radio charts. His second CD, MOMENTUM, lived up to its name as Noah performed to packed crowds in Washington, DC, New York, Boston, and elsewhere and the rave reviews continued. But Noah goes beyond making great records with a passion for live performance. He has played in New York City at The Blue Note and Jazz at Lincoln Center and abroad from Oslo to Istanbul to Guayaquil, Ecuador. Noah has appeared on stage and recorded with heavyweights such as Mike Stern, Ambrose Akinmusire, Jeremy Pelt, Benny Golson, and many others. The Steinway Gallery of Coral Gables has generously provided a piano. Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

MOCA is located at 770 NE 125th St., North Miami. More info at mocanomi.org or (305) 893-6211. The concert is free for all ages.

KCC Productions presents Tito Puente, Jr. at Arts Garage

Got Mambo? You will be captivated by the rhythm and beat…almost stepping back into a time capsule yet with refreshing energy that will keep you asking for more! Come to Arts Garage June 5 and 6 and enjoy the hot Latin rhythms of Tito Puente,
Jr. and His Latin Jazz Ensemble. Showtime is 8 PM.

The comparison is inevitable. How could it be otherwise? Tito Puente Jr. carries his father with him – imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. It’s in his looks, his joy, and his music. The younger Puente is determined to nurture the musical legacy left by his father. “He was just too vibrant, too exciting. There was magic in the music my father made.

It made people happy all over the world.” He has found enthusiastic audiences who echo his passion. Crowds lured to a venue by the father are returning to see the son — and to once again participate in the high voltage celebration that takes place on stage.

His 2004 album, “In My Father’s Shoes” featured the classic Puente titles and was spun into a BET Jazz television special of the same name. His later CD, “Got Mambo?” takes a musical departure into some powerful new music he can truly call his own.

Guest artists Bobby Cruz and Hansel & Raul help make this a coming of age project for Puente, Jr. and the album has received heavy praise from Tropical and Latin Jazz critics alike.

Expect an exciting evening of great music, and don’t forget your dancing shoes! Arts Garage is located at 180 NE First St in Delray Beach, phone (561) 450-6357. General admission is $25 at artsgarage.org.

Internationally Renowned Neonatologist Among Other Champions to Be Honored at The Children’s Trust Annual Award Ceremony on June 12th

Dr. Eduardo Bancalari, chief of Newborn Service at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the director of Neonatology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, will receive The Children’s Trust David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award for his contributions over a 50-year medical career on Friday, June 12, 2015 at the Jungle Island Treetop Ballroom.

Together with other organizations and individuals whose extraordinary efforts have benefitted children and families in Miami-Dade County, Dr. Bancalari will be honored at the 10th annual Champions for Children Luncheon Awards Ceremony, hosted by The Children’s Trust.

Dr. Bancalari contributed to the development of one of the largest and most prestigious neonatal programs in the United States; has helped save the lives of thousands of premature newborns; and trained generations of neonatologists working worldwide.

The Children’s Trust awards ceremony honors individuals and programs for their superlative efforts on behalf of children and families. With an attendance of more than 700, this annual signature event is among the most coveted within the community of child advocates and in all of Miami-Dade County. The ceremony serves to inspire others to follow in the path of the award recipients, who include the following:

• Cecilia Seda for Excellence in Direct Service to Children and Families. A program coordinator for seven years with the Community Coalition’s Wise Kidz program, Ms. Seda has helped hundreds of children on the margins – for reasons of disability, shyness or language limitations – to feel safe and secure, able to thrive in the program, at school and in their lives.

• Liberty Academy Daycare and Preschool, 2015 Program of the Year. Converted from what was once an unsafe structure used for illicit purposes, Liberty Academy is now one of the county’s premier early childhood education facilities. Its transformation epitomizes the power of change that this state-of-the-art childcare center represents for one of Miami’s most historically under-served communities.

• Amigos For Kids Strengthens Families and Communities Program, 2015 Program of the Year. This community-based, culturally and linguistically sensitive program helps parents and caregivers break the devastating cycle of child abuse and neglect, while providing complementary support service for their children. The parenting component provides relevant, effective education and support to encourage an optimal environment to strengthen families and promote healthy well-being for all.

• Touching Miami with Love Today’s Leaders Youth Development Program, 2015 Program of the Year. This youth enrichment program supports young people in Overtown and West Homestead to develop essential life skills that buffer them from the negative influences of their communities. This innovative empowerment program supports youth as the key agents to transform communities, helping them to meet their personal goals and thereby strengthening the social fabric of the greater community.

Complete bios of each award recipient are available upon request. The Jungle Island Treetop Ballroom is located at 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, Miami, FL. Reservations are $45.00 per person and a table of ten is $400. For more information or to make your reservation online, visit www.thechildrenstrust.org. The event runs from noon – 1:30 p.m.

The Children’s Trust is a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County.

Cost of Tickets-$74 using discount code LIVEANSWER for $25 OFF the regular priced $99 tickets

If you have ever had the startup itch and wanted to know if that idea of yours has any real viable business potential Startup Weekend is the place to form a team and build a business plan with a minimum viable product to test market and investor interest.

We are a non-profit, community-building event that brings together entrepreneurs of different backgrounds, including software developers, marketers, designers, and startup enthusiasts. They gather to to pitch ideas, form teams and start companies in just 54 hours. The participants that attend have 60 seconds to make a pitch, the pitches are whittled down to the top ideas, and then teams form around the ideas to come out with several developed companies or projects. Finally, the weekend culminates with demonstrations in front of an audience of judges and potential investors.

Meet your future co-founders or the opportunity to get one-on-one mentorship from VCs, Angels and some of the most recognized startup leaders in Miami.

We are seeking for Miami’s most diverse talented crowd of developers, designers, marketers, people with ideas to pitch or that just want to experience and get their feet wet into the tech scene.

On July 25th, 2015, the city of Santiago de Cuba celebrates its 500th anniversary. Since its foundation, it occupies a privileged place in the island of Cuba because of its geography, its beauty, and the charm of its people. Santiago is a vintage city full of history and unique traditions. It is also the cradle of heroes, poets, writers, painters, musicians and entertainers from Heredia to Compay Segundo, from Desi Arnaz to Emilio Estefan.
This solo photo exhibition encompasses a collection of photographs taken from 2003 to 2014. Together they constitute the photographer’s intimate portrait of the city of his childhood and youth, emotionally rediscovered through his lens during his trips to Santiago de Cuba.

Higher Frequency this month will bring in the power of sounds through the heart beat drumming performance known as Nyahbinghi, a communal meditative vibration consisting of chanting and drumming to reach states of heightened spirituality; a tradition that was resurfaced during the days of Rastafarian Bob Marley. On May 11th, 1981, Bob Marley transitioned from this earth to join the higher essence of divine placement. on Monday, May 11th, 2015, we celebrate the life of Bob Marley through some of the artists that will cover his most lyrically in-tuned music pertaining to love, peace, and harmony “4ManKind”. The 5 elements of the earth will be in surrounding included by the bonfire set in place.

Writing is solitary work – publishing takes a team. This crash-course aims to shed light on the ABC’s of publishing, both via traditional houses and self-publishing. The first half will focus on navigating the realms of traditional publishing, starting with an explanation of the Big 5 houses, mid-size players and independents, and how they all tend to operate. We’ll explore fundamentals such as what is covered in your contract, how to get an agent and what to expect of them, how the buying of rights works, and what to expect from a publisher once you land a deal.
The second half of the course will be dedicated to the basics of self-publishing. We’ll discuss the biggest self-publishing platforms and how to choose the right one for your work, how and when to consult outside professionals before you self-publish, how to monetize your self-published work, and finally, the importance of branding and how to market your work.
Rachel Deahl is a writer and editor with more than ten years of experience covering book publishing. As news director at Publishers Weekly she writes about business trends, technology, self-publishing and rights. She is the author of the Publishers Weekly original e-book, Publishing 101, and has been a speaker at various conferences, including SXSW, BookExpo America, Miami Book Fair International and The Frankfurt Book Fair.
