Arturo was born in Miami, Florida in October 19, 1957. He was raised in Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the United States. He attended High school in Venezuela and studied Architecture at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. There, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture in 1981 and his Masters in Architectural Design in 1984.

He has had a natural artistic talent since a young age and during his college years received formal art training. Even though he was painting with different Medias such as oils, pastels and pencil since he was thirteen years old in Venezuela, he developed great interest in mixed media and acrylics from his college years to today.

For the past ten years, Montoya has been developing his artwork based on his fascination for Time travel and the dematerialization of his subjects by, expressing multilevel meanings and phases in time. As, he believes: A painting is a sequence of moments frozen in time. Therefore, never finished but only recorded as the last stroke is completed.

Although, Arturo is a licensed architect in the State of Florida with over twenty five years of experience in the field of architecture and has designed costume homes, commercial and educational facilities, he is now pursuing his artwork as a main full time career.

A Decade of Relay

(Miami, Florida) – The American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life kept moving forward, even after a challenging Miami sky.  But whether there was rain or shine, thousands of people gathered at J.C. Bermudez Park in Doral during the month of April to do exactly what they have been doing for the past ten years – camp out in the middle of the night to relay, while sharing the event simultaneously with various other cities throughout the country.

Every relay event begins with an inspirational survivor lap at sunset.  After dark, they perform the Luminaria Ceremony to honor those who have been ‘touched’ by cancer in some way, and to remember loved ones they’ve lost due to the disease.

“The reason for starting the event at sunset,” said Gerardo Reyes, Team Development Chair for Relay for Life of Doral, “is because the sunset is symbolic to receiving the bad news that you or a loved one has cancer, and feeling the light in your life turn off…it’s a darkness that falls upon you.”

Families camp out during the entire evening to receive a sunrise the following morning as a symbol of hope that, one day, the cure for cancer will be found.

Fashion Fights Heart Disease In Style

(Miami, Florida) – The American Heart Association sure knows how to put on a fight against heart disease, and during the month of February it did it in style.  Miami International Mall was home to the Go Red event which offered a unique spring fashion show with vibrant designs from Express and Francesca’s Collections among other designers.  Natalia Zea of CBS4 Miami led the event as Mistress of Ceremonies. Go Red is the American Heart Association social initiative dedicated in creating awareness of the risks and threats of heart disease among women.  The movement brings energetic and passionate women together to take action in promoting healthier and active lifestyles.  The organization also recently celebrated over four decades of success.  The 44th Annual Miami Heart & Stroke Ball took place during early March at the Four Seasons Hotel in Miami.  The event brought in over $400k to fund research initiatives and other special programs. But the battle against heart disease did not, and does not, end there.  A couple of days after the Heart & Stroke Ball, over 8,000 participants joined in at the Annual Broward Heart Walk in Fort Lauderdale.  The walk brought in corporate sponsors and individuals fighting together to raise their goal of over $700k.  Proceeds from this walk will help fund medical research and educational programs for the community.  You may also want to SAVE THE DATE! Wednesday, April 4th is National Walking Day, if you want to find out more about what the American Heart Association has in store for you, visit www.heart.org. ■

Snow Returns to Dolphin Mall for 2011 Holidays

Dolphin Mall Brings in the Holiday Season with a Winter Wonderland in South Florida

Magical Snowfall Returns for its 9th Year at Dolphin Mall

Dolphin Mall invites South Florida families to experience its ninth annual Magical Snowfall. The free winter festivities in Miami begin at Dolphin Mall at the Ramblas Plaza on Wednesday, Nov. 23 and continue into the new year. There will be a snowfall at 7 p.m. daily and an additional snowfall at 9 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Beginning Monday, December 19th there will be a 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. snowfall every day until Monday, January 2, 2012. There will be no snow on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), Christmas Day (Dec. 25), New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), or New Year’s Day (January 1, 2012).

In true Dolphin Mall holiday tradition, magical wands will be distributed every night to children under 12 years of age when their parents sign up to receive the Dolphin Mall e-bulletin. At the strike of 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., the children will wave their wands in the air and magically the snow will return to the mall while illuminating the sky with a warm holiday glow. Youngsters can pick up their wands half an hour before each show.

Dolphin Mall is an enclosed value retail/entertainment/dining destination with 240 retailers, restaurants and entertainment options. It is located just five miles west of Miami International Airport, where the Dolphin Expressway and the Florida Turnpike intersect. Shoppers can access the mall by taking Exit 27 off the Florida Turnpike. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with extended hours in the Ramblas entertainment area. Preview the stores, the styles and the savings at www.shopdolphinmall.com.

In room #104, visitors will have the opportunity to admire a spectacular portrait of José Martí, the great Cuban politician and writer, its author being Juan Manuel Freire, a Miami artist. It is important to emphasize that it is not an ordinary portrait: On a canvas measuring 56 x 66 inches (1.42 x 1.68 mts) the artist has pasted more than 650 photos of the most important buildings and monuments that existed in Cuba during the 1920’s in its six provinces. On the frame, those six provinces are represented by their emblems, territories and photos of their outgoing political forces at the time. In short, it is an artwork which comprises several steps: beginning with the idea itself, the research for photographs, the design of the portrait itself by using each one of the photos which had to be shaped up to conform the features, expression and shape of Jose Marti’s face. In almost all the photos monuments, buildings and residences are easily identified (under the right eye visitors will immediately realize the photo is that of the Havana Terminal Railway Station and under the left eye the photo shown is that of the Hotel Continental Colón , Province of Matanzas, etc.) This artwork will be exhibited at Room #104 together with paintings from the Museum Collection

Diana Albadan proposes IDEAS, her first individual exhibition in Miami, composed of 13 works that evoke free figuration. The name for this work has a very interesting origin. It came from the classical theory of the philosophical teachings of Plato which has been addressed by thinkers and artists of different disciplines such as the Portuguese author José Saramago. Although the artist does not intend to defend the stream that accepts the existence of a parallel world in which thoughts are the protagonists and relate under certain underlying rules to their environment; she definitely wants make an invitation to observe the role of these ideas and thoughts on decisions made by individuals. In other words, is an invitation to remember that not in vain famous thinkers have given importance to the ideas and the way these affect us, change us, corrupt us or reinvent us.

About Us
Our organization is dedicated to promoting the best that documentary film making has to offer worldwide. We seek to provide film makers a forum which promotes their unique contributions to the evolution of the cultural arts within South Florida and within the entertainment industry as a whole. In addition we:

– Provide a documentary film festival to promote the art form of up and coming documentary filmmakers at a local, national and international level.
– Provide educational outreach programs for young filmmakers grades 6-12.
– Host three benefit concerts to raise funds in order to build much needed schools in Tanzania!

Recognized by ProductionHub as the “Spiciest Film Festival”, DocMiami was more than humbled that the beautiful Olga Guillot “Queen of Bolero” was able to share the 2010 DocMiami festival with us and that she was able to be presented the first “El Rey” Tito Puente Contribution to the Arts Award by Tito Puente Jr. The DocMiami International Film Festival, showcased three days of cutting edge international documentary filmmakers and three nights of outstanding music concerts, in a celebration of documentary filmmaking at a global level nestled in sunny South Florida. The festival brought together emerging documentary filmmakers, students’ grades 6 -12, as well as film and music enthusiasts in a truly bohemian, one-of-a-kind event. DocMiami’s music concerts benefit the non-profit, Brick by Brick for Tanzania, where performers such as: Melton Mustafa, Tito Puente, Jr., Prince Emmanuel Abiodun Aderele, Jamie Catto, Rich Ferguson, Luis Bofill and Band and Rock n’ Roll Royalty featuring Eloy “Rali”, contributed their talents to assist school children in Tanzania whom are combating not only poverty but also a drought, hunger and the AIDS crisis. The 2011 Event will continue in the same spirit presenting film, music and art all in one location here in South Florida. Join the excitement!

NOTE: Please rsvp to dan@danperezfilms.com. Thank you!

Fresh from winning “Best Florida Film” at the 2010 Sunscreen Film Festival (the award presented by none other than John Travolta himself!) “P.A.T.H.” the latest documentary film from award-winning South Florida filmmaker Dan Perez returns to Miami for a special screening at the DocMiami International Film Festival in Doral.

Watch Trailer here: http://www.vimeo.com/5499317

“P.A.T.H.” (which stands for Preserving, Archiving and Teaching Hip-Hop History) documents the P.A.T.H. Hip-Hop Academy, the first ever summer camp of it’s kind in Miami. During the four week camp, teenagers from ages 13-18 studied Hip-Hop history, the art of DJing, MCing (rapping), B-boying and B-girling (break-dancing), and urban art (graffiti).

Several of Miami’s most talented artists and performers served as instructors. The list included urban artist Krave, DJ Immortal from Scratch Academy, “B-Girl” Beta Rawkz and Soulflower who has shared the mic with emcees such as Erykah Badu, KRS-ONE and Outkast.

The camp also featured an impressive lineup of guest speakers. Hip-Hop pioneer Grandmaster Dee of Whodini, DJ Epps, popular Miami artist Lebo, Triple Seven, Faisal Tavernier of Urban America Newspaper, Mecca aka Grimo and International motivational speaker Kirk Nugent were just some of the names that took the time to stop in and address the students.

The film is suitable for all ages!

DocMiami International Film Festival 5/27-30/10

DOCMIAMI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES
Inaugural International Documentary Film Festival and Concert Series
at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa- Memorial Day weekend May 28-30, 2010

Monica Rosales, CEO and co-founder of DocMiami , believes that “Everything You Dream is Real.”
DocMiami was born from a dream to create a major cultural event harnessing the power and popularity of the documentary film medium to showcase and spotlight attention on social responsibility issues, important causes, topics and events from around the world.
Their initial vision has been expanded to include a full Memorial Day weekend of cultural activities at the world famous Doral Golf Resort and Spa. With an initial grant from the City of Doral, in Miami-Dade County, the dream to create DocMiami has become a reality.
The DocMiami international Film Festival Award Gala will take place May 30, 2010 at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa. This very special evening will honor winning filmmakers as well as special awards presented by Tito Puente, Jr. and Gloria Ordaz to La Gloria De Cuba, Olga Guillot and a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award presented to the children of Nicolas Guillén Landrián, Elvira Valdes and Nicolas Guillén.
The first press event took place on Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Romano’s Macaroni Grill in Doral located at 8700 NW 18th Terrace. Special guests included, City of Doral, Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, the organizer’s Chairperson of the Board Dr. Toni Bilbao, and the Chairperson of the Doral Cultural Affairs Advisory Board. The official 2010 DocMiami poster was unveiled, created by City of Doral artist Kristopher Del Angel, as well as the DocMiami “NGL” lifetime achievement award, created by sculptor Laura Tobi Carcano.
The Festival will open Memorial Day Weekend on May 27, 2010 in honor of American Soldiers. A special screening of “She Wore Silver Wings,” honoring the Women Air Force Service Pilots will be shown. Three Hundred U.S. Women Air Force Service Pilots are living today. Although “She Wore Silver Wings” is not a subject widely known, it is a very important part of U.S. history. This year, the WASPs will be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor in Washington D.C., making this subject timely and giving special importance to this opening screening on Memorial Day Weekend.

On May 28, 2010 a special screening of “MY RUN” will take place at DocMiami. Indiewood Pictures in Association with Destiny Pictures presents the award-winning, inspirational documentary of Terry Hitchcock, narrated by Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton.
After tragically losing his wife to breast cancer and struggling to raise three young children on his own, Terry Hitchcock seized on an idea. He wanted to accomplish the impossible: run 75 consecutive marathons in 75 consecutive days to bring attention to the incredibly difficult lives of single-parent families. The film is directed and produced by Tim VandeSteeg and produced by Mark Castaldo who will both be present at the screening, including Terry Hitchcock himself. All proceeds from this screening benefit the American Cancer Society, Doral Relay for Life.
On May 29, 2010 From Evolution to Revolution “Rock ‘n’ Roll Made in Mexico ” will be screened. This documentary is the story of Mexican rock ‘n’ roll told by intrepid filmmakers Lance Miccio and Rock icon Fito de la Parra. Both played with the 70’s band “Canned Heat” at Woodstock. Lance Miccio, Director of ”Rock n’Roll Made in Mexico”, will be present for a special networking meet-and-greet event for documentary filmmakers at DocMiami. The entire day is packed with Music related films such as PBS’s “Latin Divas”, “What About Me?”, and “Do It Again”. These documentaries combined, exhibit and chronical the contributions and talents of artists such as Gloria Estefan, The Kinks, Carlos Santana and more!
Closing the events on May 30, 2010 are special Screenings of “Mariel 25 and 50 Años de Exilio: el Documental”. In 2009, the Cuban Revolution celebrated 50 years in power. Ninety miles away, those who throughout half a decade, emigrated in waves to the United States, proved to be a testament of those who triumphed out of tragedy.
Followed by a special screening of “The Extraordinary Journey of Fernando Bujones”, Filmmaker Israel Rodriguez, a Cuban native and member of Orlando Ballet, danced under Mr. Bujones’ direction for many years. Amazingly, Rodriguez had been documenting Mr. Bujones’ work with the Orlando Ballet for two years when his sudden death from a rare form of cancer rocked the ballet world in 2005.
The event includes three days of cutting edge documentary filmmakers’ showings and three nights of outstanding music concerts. A true celebration of documentary filmmaking at a global level nestled in sunny South Florida. The festival brings together emerging documentary filmmakers, students, and film and music enthusiasts in a truly bohemian, one-of-a-kind event. Funds raised during the three evening concerts will benefit the non- profit organization, Brick by Brick Tanzania, Inc, dedicated to building schools in the African nation challenged not only by poverty but also by drought, hunger and AIDS.

The official host of the event is Tito Puente, Jr. He will be joined by Gloria Ordaz who will welcome Melton Mustafa, of the 14th Annual Melton Mustafa Jazz Festival. Fito Espinola, The Jonsons, featuring Eloy Rali and Luis Bofill & Band will be performing!
