The Miami Downtown Development Authority (MiamiDDA) has extended the popular winter event, The Heineken DWNTWN Miami Concert Series presented by Car2Go year-round, with four FREE summer shows at the Olympia Theater at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts. The expanded concert series, features four genres of music, aims to introduce new generations to the Gusman, increase foot traffic in the downtown area and spur commerce while promoting Flagler Street as a neighborhood where new businesses and rich history come together.

The August 9 show is the final show in the series and features Grammy nominated Cuban Band, Conjunto Progreso and Afro-Cuban Funk band, Palo!

· The Heineken DWNTWN Miami Concert Series presented by Car2Go is FREE to the public.
· A pre-performance Happy Hour, sponsored by the Olympia Theater will feature ½ price cocktails in the theater lobby lounge from 6:00 – 7:00pm
· This is the final concert in the Heineken DWNTWN Miami Concert Series presented by Car2Go

Since their inception in 1999, the traditional Cuban Son ensemble Conjunto Progreso, has taken audiences back in time to the nostalgic era of early Cuban popular music. Led by Johnny Aguiló, son of Cuban trumpet legend and band leader Rolando “El Ruso” Aguiló, Conjunto Progreso has grown from a quartet, to its recent incarnation of eight members. In 2004, Conjunto Progreso released its long awaited debut album titled Masters of Cuban Son, featuring an array of songs by legendary Cuban composers Nico Saquito, Miguel Matamoros, and Compay Segundo. The album was honored by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences with a 2006 Grammy Award Nomination under the category of Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album. www.facebook.com/conjuntoprogreso

PALO! is a favorite among South Florida’s live music devotees and in 2012 was named Miami New Times’ BEST BAND in the Readers’ Choice Awards. The group plays a style of extremely danceable music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk”. Their appeal lies in their unmatched musical energy, catchy original songs, and amazing display of impromptu virtuosity. A mix of Latin and Urban sounds gives PALO! their unique, infectious style. Formed in 2003, when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment, PALO! combines Cuban music with funk beats. PALO has performed for packed houses at New York’s legendary SOB’s, Ryles Jazz Club and Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston, and the Chicago Folk and Roots Festival. The band often appears at venues throughout South Florida. GWAR (popularly thought to be an acronym for God What an Awful Racket, despite the band’s protests to the contrary) are thrash metal’s answer to the more mainstream satire of Spinal Tap. Gory, sexually perverse, and scatological in the extreme, GWAR claimed to consist of all-powerful interplanetary warriors, descended from aliens stranded in Antarctica and initially created from the lowest filth in the universe, who came to Earth to sexually enslave and/or slaughter the human race. The group quickly established a unique identity as the members performed in bizarre costumes made of latex and papier-mâché, while the stage show itself featured fake pagan rituals, corpses spewing washable bodily fluids on the audience, and sometimes a mechanical giant maggot. GWAR’s live performances are literally the most mind-blowing act you will see today!

The legendary Cannonball Adderley was a Broward County band director at Dillard High School. During Cannonball’s tenure he taught at both the historic Old Dillard site at 1009 NW 4th Street (now a museum on the National Register of Historic Sites), and the current home of Dillard High School at 2501 NW 11th Street. The Old Dillard Museum now hosts an annual concert series–the Cannonball Jazz Series–in honor of a hometown saxophonist who became the most commercially successful jazz musician of his day.

From their halcyon days as America’s sweethearts to their current status as superstars who pioneered a genre, The Go-Go’s have enjoyed an amazing three-decade reign as high pop priestesses. The internationally-loved hitmakers helped cement the foundation of the early ‘80s pop-rock sound without the aid of outside composers, session players or, most importantly, creative compromise. From their very first show, the group sang and played their own songs, offering five feisty role models for a generation of ready-to-rock girls and good, hooky fun for pop-loving guys.

For The Go-Go’s, their story truly is a punk version of the American Dream. The Go-Go’s debuted in May of 1978, a time when there were other all-female bands, but ones orchestrated by men such as Phil Spector, Kim Fowley or Sonny Bono. The band was conceived in the very same gritty glitter of the rough Los Angeles scene that also birthed X, The Germs, and The Weirdos. By ’79, the Go-Go’s were beating their path to stardom on their own terms. They played every cool club and party in Los Angeles and released an early version of “We Got the Beat” through the quirky Stiff Records in the UK.

By 1981, the band was signed to upstart new wave haven IRS records with Beauty and The Beat, and the infectious debut U.S. single, “Our Lips Are Sealed,” was released. The double-platinum Beauty and The Beat reached #1 and was followed-up by Vacation in ‘82 and Talk Show in ’84. During those years, hits like “Vacation,” “Head Over Heels” and “Turn to You” dominated the airwaves and, today, continue to live on in countless compilations, movie soundtracks, remakes and television commercials.

For 15 years, the Afro Roots World Music Festival has celebrated the evolution of African culture by featuring some of the best performers from all over the Caribbean, the Americas and African countries such as Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali and The Republic of Congo. This global connection through the universal language of music has helped the festival evolve into one of Miami’s most culturally diverse events. The festival’s signature youth program,
“Let The Children Have Music” is a FREE program providing live music, dance demonstrations, show-and-tell style presentations by festival artists and art projects for children ages 3 to 12.

The Little Haiti Cultural Center will be the  host location to this year’s celebration Saturday, August 3, 2013. To commemorate the festival’s 15th anniversary, CAC wants to produce an extra special "Let The Children have Music" program and invite a special musical guest.

Your donation will support CAC’s efforts to produce a special "Let The Children have Music" program that’s not only fun for kids of all-ages, but showcases the diverse cultural roots that exist in their community. It is our sincere desire to bring world culture to Miami, and your contribution will aid our effort in continuing to do so.

The evening will feature various showcases produced for this special anniversary year. Highlights include the Afro Polyphonic World Orchestra, a world music orchestra that collaborates with invited guests artists from around the globe. Itawe (pronounced E tah wi), lead singer of Locos Por Juana will be performing songs from his new reggae solo project. The Antilles Music Ensemble, representing the early days of Caribbean dance music from 1900  1950 and all points in between. This year the festival will also present two West African artists including master percussionist and founder of UC Berkeley’s African Music and Dance Ensemble,  CK Ladzekpo from Ghana, and Master Balafonist and Griot, Ibrahima Dioubate from Guinea. Also representing Africa and collaborating with CK Ladzepko is the all women percussion and dance troupe Venus Rising. From Colombia we have Grupo Barrio Abajo performing their blend of Afro Colombian music from both coasts. Representing Brazil is the  Unidos de Miami Samba School directed by Paulo Gualano. Finally, returning to the festival for a second year in a row is Cuban Son duo Cortadito, which will be expanding to a quintet for this year’s special performance.

Friends of Nature Music Festival (FON FEST) announces the first round of musicians to participate in the Festival’s inaugural edition.  FON FEST is one of the first eco-friendly interactive music festivals in Miami whose purpose is to educate the public on sustainability, the wellbeing of the planet, and how to contribute to saving it. Thousands of attendees will spend two days experiencing live music, cultural food, entertainment, and a wide variety of interactive activities as well as exhibitors.

The Festival will feature eco-friendly initiatives from the sponsoring products to the tickets sold. In addition to these initiatives, Festival attendees can expect to be occupied at every step with activities promoting an earth-friendly lifestyle. Eco-activities include stations which teach attendees how to pick fruits and vegetables, make homemade detergent or grow personal vegetable gardens. Other activities are camping, canoeing, movies, comedy shows, live art installations, guest speakers, and seed stomping to improve the park grounds post Festival. Attendees can browse the vendor site, featuring fresh fruit markets and exotic eco-vendors such as organic soap makers, alternative energy gadgets, and more. To satisfy mid-Festival cravings, all of Miami’s famed food trucks will be on Festival grounds serving some of the community’s favorite treats.

With the goal of raising environmental awareness and promoting companies that have green initiatives, the musicians will contribute to the Festival’s mission through their support of the Festival and by being friends of nature.

Miami native Karina Iglesias takes center stage at Unity on the Bay to perform her usual boleros, jazzy-pop style of hip-hop and American classics on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 8:00 pm. Iglesias, as seen on NBC’s #1 hit TV show ‘The Voice’, performs with Nu-Thang and special guest artist Monique Abbadie. Tickets on sale at www.unityonthebay.org. Ticketed pre-party reception starts at 7pm.

“This concert is my own spin on top popular music. It’s my personal vocal touch on a mix of jazz, pop, and blues songs along with some new, original material,” said Iglesias, songwriter and singer. This is Iglesias’s first concert since leaving ‘The Voice’.

In 2013, Iglesias was a top 16 contestant on NBC’s #1 hit TV show ‘The Voice’. She was originally a member of Team Adam, after a two-chair audition that included Blake Shelton, and was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World”, which became a YouTube sensation.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, the saucy, soultress songwriter is a long-time South Florida vocal favorite. The Miami Dolphins hired her through Emilio Estefan to sing the anthem at all home games, as part of the ensemble Dolphin Voices, in 2009. She was featured on Univision’s Mira Quien Baila and has taken the stage with numerous Latin artists.

Adam Levine, ‘The Voice’ coach said after Iglesias audition: “I felt like for the first time on the show, that possibly, that towards the end, that the light fixtures were just gonna’ explode, because [she is] a great singer and [she] really deserves to be here, so congratulations.”

Special guest artist Monique Abbadie takes the stage with Iglesias and the Nu-Thang at the concert. Abbadie is a pop artist who has performed at the legendary House of Blues Los Angeles, Planet Hollywood Las Vegas and Miami’s Gusman Center, among many others places. She has also been on NBCs hit show ‘The Voice’ where she recently participated on Team Shakira.

Paul Ayick was born in New Jersey and spent a considerable amount of time on the New York jazz scene before moving to Broward County. Two of South Florida’s premiere musical acts will converge at the Design District venue known for showcasing the area’s best and brightest artists. Humbert and Ketchy Shuby will co-headline the evening after Independence Day, in what promises to be a high-energy night of rock and soul.

Scene veterans Humbert will bring flavorful melodies, Beach Boy-tinged harmonies and relentless rock power to The Stage in what will be only their second performance there after May’s Sound Theory Live relaunch on Wynwood Radio party. The four-piece is poised to release their first set of new music since 2006, which should be available online and on CD in August of this year.

“Very few bands are greater in weight than Humbert – Ketchy Shuby is one of them and we are very happy to be sharing the stage with them,” offers Humbert’s colorful frontman Ferny Coipel. “Pound for pound, they are heavier than us.”

Ketchy Shuby’s explosive funk jams coupled with the group’s soulful tunesmith and the manic-energy of lead singer /guitarist Jason Joshua Hernandez-Rodriguez have kept them extremely busy this year. Coming off spring a Midwestern tour that took them through the Austin, TX mega-music festival SXSW, the band caught the attention of Spin Magazine. Their momentum has carried them through early summer with near-weekly gigs throughout South Florida in support of their latest single “I’ll Take Care of You”.

When asked his thoughts on the pairing of the two bands, Hernandez-Rodriguez simply says: “Humbert is my favorite band of all time. That’s all.”

The Colombian Youth Philharmonic, a.k.a. Filarmónica Joven de Colombia (FJC), an orchestra composed of 106 of the most talented young classical musicians in all of Colombia and funded by the Bolivar Davivienda Foundation, is set to perform and film its first stateside concert in the internationally-renowned, Frank Gehry designed, New World Center in Miami Beach on July 26, 2013. The recording will be released on DVD.

Lead by the award-winning and masterful Alejandro Posada, who’s held principal and guest conductor roles in major orchestras throughout Europe and Latin America, the program will feature virtuoso Eduardo Rojas as piano soloist. The precocious Rojas was formerly the youngest dean in the history of Colombia to serve a music conservatory, and has collaborated with a host of internationally acclaimed orchestras and organizations. The music begins with a dress rehearsal where members of the media and select invitees will get a sneak peek of the show. The formal concert and VIP cocktail are to follow and will be attended by a who’s who of local and Colombian society. This program was made possible with the support of The Embassy of Colombia in Washington and the Consulate of Colombia in Miami, as part of Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs “Plan de Promoción de Colombia en el Exterior,” that promotes the country overseas through the diversity of its cultural expressions.

AMIGOS FOR KIDS HOSTED SOLD OUT ING MIAMI CELEBRITY DOMINO NIGHT

Amigos For Kids, the Miami-based nonprofit organization that aims to prevent child abuse and neglect by valuing children, strengthening families and educating communities, hosted its signature annual fundraiser, ING Miami Celebrity Domino Night on the evening of Sat., June 15 in Miami, Fla. More than 2,000 guests took part in the sold-out event, celebrated by many as “Miami’s most popular fundraiser.” “Amigos For Kids is grateful to have celebrated one of our more highly successful ING Miami Celebrity Domino Nights, and we want to offer a special thank you to corporate sponsors ING U.S., Bacardi USA, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and all other sponsors who made this evening possible,” said Rosa Maria Plasencia, president and CEO of Amigos For Kids. “This year we exceeded our fundraising goals, with almost one hundred thousand dollars more than last year, and it was thanks to the countless AMIGOS that believe in our mission and the work that we do in the South Florida community. We are happy to have shared such a great evening with our corporate, media and restaurant sponsors, celebrities, community leaders, our hard-working staff, and every person who attended the event.” The evening featured celebrity domino players, bar courtesy of presenting sponsor, Bacardí USA, and an exciting silent auction featuring the original artwork for this year’s painting by Carlos Navarro, “Conga y Domino.”  Guests also enjoyed a live performance by one of Miami’s hottest bands “The Culture”, as well as with the electrifying rhythms of DJ Irie, of the Miami Heat.

This summer, in a quiet Miami neighborhood and within the Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ’s intimate, historic Spanish-revival style setting, concert goers will have the unique opportunity to be awed and entertained by the music industry’s most-talented and revered classical and jazz figures.  These artists will perform and delight audiences on the Community Arts Program (CAP) 2013 Summer Concert Series titled Then Swings My Soul!
 
The Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series has entertained more than 62,000 people since it began in 1985.  The Series has grown into a valued tradition and, more recently, part of a Community Arts Program that also provides music education to children within its Conservatory for the Arts.  "The Community Arts Program (CAP) Summer Concert Series is a rare opportunity to hear world-renowned artists in the intimate and beautiful Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ," says Shelton G. Berg, University of Miami Dean of the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music.  "The CAP Conservatory for the Arts provides high-quality music education to children, many of whom would otherwise be denied access to the wonder of music and the beauty of the artistic spirit."

Daughter of Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director, Luis Russell, Grammy Award winner Catherine Russell has been making fans and friends since the 2006 release of her debut album, Cat.  Catherine’s latest release, Strictly Romancin’, was just awarded Prix du Jazz Vocal 2012 (Vocal Album of The Year) by the Jazz Academy in France.  With a Billie Holiday lyricism and Sarah Vaughan depth, Catherine Russell-with pianist Mark Shane, Matt Munisteri, guitar and Lee Hudson, bass-will bring concert goers to the edge of their seat on the way to their feet!

The Summer Concert Series is thrilled to present Orli Shaham, who touts an impressive international reputation as one of today’s most gifted pianists.  Recognized for her grace, subtlety and vitality, Ms. Shaham is a consummate musician also praised for many recording collaborations with her brother, violinist Gil Shaham. In a recital of Chopin, Brahms, and a unique presentation of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, concert goers will experience Orli Shaham’s prodigious skills and interpretations admired by critics over four continents.  This concert will be an evening of purely delightful music making!

The brother of two other musical phenoms-Celin and Angel Romero-Pepe touts his most important contribution as reaching the common individual, communicating the richness and beauty of the classical guitar to millions of people throughout the world.  In a unique and special evening, the 2013 Summer Concert Series is proud to present Pepe Romero. The audience will revel in a great ambassador of classical music and, correspondingly, of the classical guitar.
 
July 25 – Brubeck Brothers Quartet  
Chris and Dan Brubeck had the unique privilege of growing up listening to, studying with, and eventually playing alongside one of the great jazz legends of our time, their father, Dave Brubeck.  Add to this heritage the fact that the musical tastes of Chris and Dan were forged in the stylistically innovative 1960’s, and you have an exciting combination of musical elements to draw upon!  With Dan at the drums and Chris on electric bass and bass trombone, an exciting evening goes over the top with the addition of guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb.  This promises to be a dynamic and compelling 2013 Summer Concert Series event, with a loving tribute to Dave Brubeck!    
 
August 8 – Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra
Featuring some of the finest jazz veterans of the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson’s Big Bop Nouveau, the Airmen of Note, and many others, the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra is dedicated to the advancement of big band jazz. Led by composer/arranger Alan Baylock, the band has a cohesive, distinctive sound that is both entertaining and inspiring, and has been lauded by fans and fellow musicians alike.  With explosive energy, ingenious re-harmonizations, imaginative melodies, tonal and rhythmic expressions and Alan’s arrangements, the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra express a great sense of joy and soulfulness.  In an incredible evening, the audience will swing to standards old and new! 
 
August 22 – John Pizzarelli
World-renowned jazz guitarist and singer, John Pizzarelli,closes the 2013 Summer Concert Series with flair!  Using performers like Nat "King" Cole, Frank Sinatra and Joao Gilberto and the songs of composers from Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin to James Taylor, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Lennon & McCartney as touchstones, John has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of the Great American Songbook and beyond, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing and singing.  Joined by his brother, bass player Martin Pizzarelli, this will be an evening that concert goers will not want to end!

Fresh off the release of her hit single “Moon of Dreams” featuring T-Pain, Rising star Egine is set to take over the Heineken Dwntwn Miami Concert Series with a free performance.

One Drop Theory’s self titled release is a collaborative EP endeavor between Susie Green & Isaac Bichachi. After several years of working in the music industry as writers and producers, these two classically trained Miami musicians decided to combine past and future to create an alternate present. The album crafts One Drop Theory’s delicate composition sensibilities and mastery of synthesized sounds with powerful vocals.

Green’s melodic voice and sampler interventions weave life into Bichachi’s synthetic electronic and production. Tracks like Rails, an electronic instrumental roller coaster ride show off the duo’s passion for electronic compositions. The groups most hypnotic track called Fool’s Circle is best described by a quote from Albert Einstein: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result." This quote highlights the track and sheds light on how individuals and society don’t learn from their mistakes and continue to cycle around the same vicious loop. And finally, an anthem for all those who feel marginalized, Freak Flag establishes a banner in which to stand united.

Touch Me Hear is an experimental multimedia work commissioned by Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center (New York) that explores the relationship between touch, sound and movement. Body parts and its extensions such as hair and clothes become performable musical instruments. From skin sensations to complex digital tactile simulations, the piece exposes disappearing awareness between what can be felt and what actually is. Whitesnake, fronted by Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale, emerged on the music scene in 1977. Fairly popular in Europe and Japan, the band didn’t hit the American mainstream until 1984’s Slide It In – its first platinum album. Three years later, Whitesnake released an eponymous album (titled 1987 in Europe) that featured the hits “Still of the Night,” “Here I Go Again” and the power ballad, “Is This Love.”

In April of this year, the Whitesnake: Made in Japan DVD was released. Inspired by the performances from the nine sold-out UK shows and a further 87 performances from around the world, the live albums Made in Britain and the accompanying The World Record were born. Whitesnake will release the double live album, Made in Britain – The World Record, on July 9. Musicians on the albums include David Coverdale (vocals), Doug Aldrich (guitars), Reb Beach (guitars), Michael Devin (bass), Brian Tichy (drums) and special guest Brian Ruedy (keyboards).

Red Line Chemistry was formed in Kansas City, Mo, in 2004. Members include Tom Brown (bass, vocals), Mike Mazzarese (percussion), Dave Fyten (guitar, vocals), Andrew Breit (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and Brett Ditgen (lead vocals). Since the hard rock band released its full-length debut album, Chemical Hand & a Hand Grenade, Red Line Chemistry has performed with Stone Temple Pilots, Puddle of Mudd, Three Days Grace and many others. Their latest album, Tug of War, was released in May 2013 and was produced by Grammy-award winning producer Nick Raskulinecz who has worked with Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters and the Deftones.

KC & The Sunshine Band is still as widely popular today as they were when they first danced onto the music scene nearly 40 years ago. Harry Wayne Casey – “KC,” for short – developed a unique fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove, yielding an impressive string of hits like “Get Down Tonight,” “That’s The Way (I Like It),” “Do You Wanna Go Party” and “Shake Your Booty.” With sales of over 100 million records, nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards and an American Music Award, KC & The Sunshine Band was one of the most progressive bands of the ‘70s and is credited with changing the sound of modern pop music.

Miami’s own Harry Wayne Casey (KC), started working in the music business at age 17, performing menial tasks around the T.K. Records/Studio complex in his hometown. Together with Richard Finch, a budding studio engineer prodigy at TK Records, they formed KC & The Sunshine Band in the early 1970s.

Their first record, Blow Your Whistle, made the top 15 on the R&B chart. With the release of the self-titled triple platinum second album in 1975 came the group’s first major US hits with “Get Down Tonight,” “That’s the Way (I Like It),” “Boogie Shoes” and “Rock Your Baby.” KC & The Sunshine Band became the first act to score four #1 pop singles in one 12-month period since the Beatles in 1964. Three of those singles crossed over to become #1 R&B, as well. The 1976 album, Part 3, also went triple platinum and yielded the #1 singles “I’m Your Boogie Man,” “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty” and “Keep It Comin’ Love.”

The band’s momentum continued when “Boogie Shoes” was included on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. “Please Don’t Go” and “Yes, I’m Ready”, a duet with high school friend Teri DeSario, also became favorites. KC returned to the charts in 1983 with “Give It Up”, which also hit #1 in the UK.

KC won a songwriting Grammy in 1976 for best R&B song for “Where is the Love” which was recorded by Betty Wright. He also received Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, as well as Producer of the Year in 1978 for his work on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

In 1995, he recorded Get Down Live, a concert album that was gleaned from his performances in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Peru and Melbourne, Australia. KC’s “The Best of KC and The Sunshine Band” went gold in 1999. In 2001, KC released an album of all-new material entitled I’ll Be There For You. Proceeds from the title song, released as a single, were donated to the September 11 relief effort.
In 2002 KC received the coveted Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where Dick Clark and music producer Michael Lloyd turned out to honor him. That same year, That’s The Way I Like It – The Harry Wayne Casey Story was published.

Since then, the band has enjoyed a surge in popularity. Their music has been featured in over 75 movies, video games, sporting events and TV shows including Desperate Housewives, American Idol and Dancing With The Stars. Music acts like White Zombie, Baha Men and Beyoncé Knowles have covered his music. Their infectious grooves and bass lines have been sampled by R. Kelly, Snoop Dogg and Trick Daddy, to name a few.

This week, we will welcome back Adrian Knight from Sweden/New York and Daniel Manoiu, Richard Yates, Rodrigo Bussad and Matthew Taylor, the four graduate composition students from University of Miami on the rise. The evening will feature music for electric and acoustic guitars, violin, saxophone, narration and, of course, a copious amount of electronics. The works will showcase various experimental practices in electronic music. While some musicians will explore large sonic trance-like washes, others will investigate the power of pitch and rhythmic repetitions as contrasted with the principles of indeterminacy. If you are curious about learning how symbiosis and diversion manifest themselves in music and how live electronics can facilitate an inner journey, this is an event for you.

Award-winning music program celebrates return at The Stage Miami

After four years of broadcasting on local jazz station WDNA, the musical performance and interview program Sound Theory Live has found a new home: Wynwood Radio.

“We’re excited about resuming Sound Theory Live with our new media partners Wynwood Radio and look forward to bringing the global listening public even more compelling programming and music,” says founder and host Carlos F. Garcia, who also owns the show’s brick and mortar venue, The Stage Miami. “We invite everyone to celebrate with us at The Stage on Friday, May 10th, 2013 beginning at 7 p.m. for an extended two-hour show or listen in on the web. Following the show, Wynwood Radio will continue to stream live from The Stage with acts and DJs throughout the night.”

Adds Wynwood Radio’s Vice President and Director Vicente Solis: “We are delighted to be Sound Theory Live’s new home and media partners. Carlos and his team have many positive liaisons with the different Miami musical scenes. We believe that his show, in an online radio environment, can thrive, become more agile, fun and can also enhance the opportunity for community expansion that Wynwood Radio nurtures as part of its DNA.”

The move to web won’t change the show format, which according to the program website is “geared towards promoting the great local musicians by showcasing their talents live on the radio.” It will allow for greater content freedom and a looser format not beholden to news updates and public service announcements. Garcia adds: “The show expects to have increased flexibility both in programming and in location. We hope to bring the show to venues and events all over South Florida to help continue moving the Miami music scene forward!”

Once again the show will feature Garcia, voted Miami New Times’ “Best FM Radio Personality” in 2010, as the host, with the assistance of co-hosts Sasha Torres, co-owner of The Stage, venue booking agent Eric Garcia and show veteran, Andrea Alarcon.

Slated to play live and be interviewed on the maiden Wynwood Radio webcast are: Afrobeta, Electric Piquete, Brendan O’Hara, Radioboxer, Humbert, The Problem Kids, Bachaco as well as veteran Miami DJs DJ Sire Esq., DJ Manuvers and many more. There are some surprise guests in store as well. The festivities and webcast commence May 10 at 7 p.m., during the show’s usual slot and time, and will continue through 9 p.m. Subsequently, Sound Theory Live will assume it’s regularly scheduled time on Wynwood Radio and be webcast from locations across South Florida and re-aired on Sunday afternoons, and potentially during other days and times.

Love him or hate him, the self-proclaimed "Antichrist Superstar" – Marilyn Manson — was indisputably among the most notorious and controversial entertainers ever.  Starting out as Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids, they had become one of the most popular acts in the South Florida area.  Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor came calling, offering both a contract with his Nothing Records label as well as the chance to open for NIN; Manson accepted both offers, and the group’s debut LP, Portrait of an American Family, appeared during the summer of 1994. The group’s notoriety began to soar and during an appearance in Salt Lake City, Manson ripped apart a copy of the Book of Mormon while on-stage. Celebrated by supporters as a crusader for free speech Manson was the latest in a long line of shock rockers, rising to the top of the charts on a platform of sex, drugs, and Satanism. His brand of metal struck a major chord with the youth market, and he became a mainstream anti-hero. Such attention pushed many of his songs — including "The Dope Show," "The Beautiful People," and a cover of the Eurythmics’ "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" — into the upper reaches of the modern rock charts.

Gold Coast Jazz wraps up their 21st jazz concert series on May 8, 2013 with a concert featuring two of south Florida’s favorite jazz divas, Wendy Pedersen and Paulette Dozier.  “By Request” will feature selections picked in advance by the audience. The two jazz divas will be backed by members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band under the direction of Steve Ahern. The concert takes place in the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts 201 SW 5thAvenue in Fort Lauderdale.  Single tickets are $40 per person. Paulette Dozier is a versatile jazz singer and an accomplished stage actress.  She recently completed a successful run of “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill,” a musical about Billie Holiday.  As a recording artist, Dozier has released two jazz CD’s “With you” and “Over & over Again.” She has appeared at numerous jazz festivals, jazz clubs and at concert engagements around the world.  In addition to her jazz credits, she has appeared with Melba Moore in “Crowns” and in the original cast of the hit musical “Respect: A Musical Journey of Women.”  JazzReveiw.com says “Her music is nostalgic with a contemporary feel, which makes surrendering to the mood a place of sheer comfort.”
 
Wendy Pedersen is one of South Florida’s favorite performers. Her high energy delivery, with deep, convincing emotion, has been impacting audiences for years. A highly sought after studio singer, Wendy can be heard on hundreds of recordings including those of Christina Aguilera, Alejandro Sanz, Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Chayanne, James Brown, and Raul Diblasio- just to name a few.  Wendy also sings with the jazz vocal quartet, Mad Romance, featuring Rick Harris, Lisanne Lyons and Greg Diaz. On Saturday, May 18th, a band of accordions will invade the streets of Miami Beach. Strutting from The Betsy – South Beach at 1440 Ocean Drive from which they will emerge at 7pm to Art Center/South Florida on Lincoln Road the street-bound squeezebox ensemble will then present a musical program celebrating the variety of musical genres that showcase the instrument at the Art Center’s Project 924 beginning at 8pm.

Join the band and other enthusiasts at The Betsy for a refreshing send-off at 6:30 then walk or dance along as the musical pack moves north up the Ocean to Lincoln Road and on to the Art Center for the full show. Featured accordionists for the event include local Klezmer favorite Shlomo Geva and renowned “Latin Diva of the Accordion,” Maricarmen Vazquez.

Sound Theory Live to Relaunch on Wynwood Radio May 10

Award-winning music program celebrates return at The Stage Miami

Miami, FL – May 1, 2013 – After four years of broadcasting on local jazz station WDNA, the musical performance and interview program Sound Theory Live has found a new home: Wynwood Radio.

“We’re excited about resuming Sound Theory Live with our new media partners Wynwood Radio and look forward to bringing the global listening public even more compelling programming and music,” says founder and host Carlos F. Garcia, who also owns the show’s brick and mortar venue, The Stage Miami. “We invite everyone to celebrate with us at The Stage on Friday, May 10th, 2013 beginning at 7 p.m. for an extended two-hour show or listen in on the web. Following the show, Wynwood Radio will continue to stream live from The Stage with acts and DJs throughout the night.”

Adds Wynwood Radio’s Vice President and Director Vicente Solis: “We are delighted to be Sound Theory Live’s new home and media partners. Carlos and his team have many positive liaisons with the different Miami musical scenes. We believe that his show, in an online radio environment, can thrive, become more agile, fun and can also enhance the opportunity for community expansion that Wynwood Radio nurtures as part of its DNA.”

The move to web won’t change the show format, which according to the program website is “geared towards promoting the great local musicians by showcasing their talents live on the radio.” It will allow for greater content freedom and a looser format not beholden to news updates and public service announcements. Garcia adds: “The show expects to have increased flexibility both in programming and in location. We hope to bring the show to venues and events all over South Florida to help continue moving the Miami music scene forward!”

Once again the show will feature Garcia, voted Miami New Times’ “Best FM Radio Personality” in 2010, as the host, with the assistance of co-hosts Sasha Torres, co-owner of The Stage, venue booking agent Eric Garcia and show veteran, Andrea Alarcon.

Slated to play live and be interviewed on the maiden Wynwood Radio webcast are: Afrobeta, Electric Piquete, Brendan O’Hara, Radioboxer, Humbert, The Problem Kids, Bachaco as well as veteran Miami DJs DJ Sire Esq., DJ Manuvers and many more. There are some surprise guests in store as well. The festivities and webcast commence May 10 at 7 p.m., during the show’s usual slot and time, and will continue through 9 p.m. Subsequently, Sound Theory Live will assume it’s regularly scheduled time on Wynwood Radio and be webcast from locations across South Florida and re-aired on Sunday afternoons, and potentially during other days and times.

The fourth and final of the Miami International Piano Festival’s “Four Classical Sundays at Five” will feature pianist Kemal Gekic and violist Michael Klotz in a special chamber program at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center in Aventura, FL at 5 P.M on Sunday, April 21st.

The Miami International Piano Festival’s Four Classical Sundays at Five are intimate, classical, salon-style recitals presented at the beautiful Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. They feature some of the most renowned artists from around the globe and revitalize the tradition of the salon concerts of the 19th century. Each artist is invited to speak with the audience and reveal their insights and thoughts about the repertoire, the composers and their own personal interpretations. This creates a level of intimacy between performer and spectator that is not typical at more conventional recitals. A post-recital meet-the-artist reception allows audience and performers to get to know one another even further.

Young Patronesses of the Opera (YPO), in conjunction with Florida Grand Opera (FGO), is proud to announce the 27th annual YPO Voice Competition. This year, the Finals Concert will be held for the first time at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. Offering a program of popular and significant arias as sung by today’s brightest young talents.
 
“We are not only looking to provide new opportunities for budding opera singers,” said Lucie Spieler, chairman of the YPO Voice Competition. “We also want to give the community the chance to experience their talent and fall in love with opera, whether for the first time or all over again.”
 
The competition began with hundreds of applicants, which have been narrowed down to 35 semifinalists set to audition in Miami on April 26. The following day, a hand-picked group of 12 finalists will perform giving the aspiring stars a taste of their future success.
 
“For more than 20 years, YPO and FGO have worked together to bring opera to the community in South Florida. This competition features the best young voices from across the nation and the proof is in the winners,” said Susan Danis, Florida Grand Opera’s CEO and General Director. “Past finalists – such as Michael Fabiano, Nadine Sierra, and Elizabeth Caballero – have gone on to successful international careers, singing leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and more.” 
 
Each of the 12 finalists will perform and compete for $46,000 in prizes, some of which include: the Senior Young Artist division (ages 26-30) grand prize of $8,000; the Junior Young Artist (ages 20-25) division grand prize of $7,500; the Troy Moss Memorial prize of $5,000; the Audience Favorite prize of $1,000, for which tickets buyers will have the chance to vote.
 
The YPO Voice Competition, held in Miami every other year, was founded in 1972 by Irene Patti Swartz Hammond. In 1988, YPO joined forces with Florida Grand Opera to create a truly prestigious national competition, awarding some of the highest prizes in the category. The chairman of the event is Lucie Spieler with co-chairmen Charlette Seidel and Renee Fink.
 
The judges for the 2013 competition include: Andrew Bisantz, music director of Eugene Opera and an American conductor with extensive credits leading national orchestras and opera companies throughout the country, most recently FGO’s Magic Flute; Gerald Martin Moore, pianist, conductor, and vocal coach who works with several notable singers, including Renée Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, and Rolando Villazón; Maria Zouves, soprano, founder and director of V.O.I.C.Experience in Tampa, and associate director of Opera Tampa.

he Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz. Professor Lynch directs his hand picked ensemble of talented young musicians and performs with them as his own group.

Among his many achievements, Brian Lynch has long been known as a great conductor of the jazz jam session. As a member of the house band at the legendary Star Cafe sessions in the New York City of the early 1980s, with Junior Cook and Harold White, and as bandleader of the late night jams at the NY Blue Note in the 1990s, Lynch absorbed the philosophy and practice of the session at its highest level. Now he brings his knowledge and love of the form to Miami and PAX.

Practitioners of all genres from traditional to contemporary, from straight ahead to Afro-Cuban and world music, will be encouraged to participate and cross pollinate, young students and established artists alike. PALO! was formed in 2003 when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment combining Cuban music with funk beats. PALO! immediately began a residency at Hoy como Ayer, one of the area’s best live music clubs. They soon started performing in many other area venues. PALO! has been featured at events such as Carnaval on the Mile, Art in the Park, the Amigos For Kids Charity, Miami Book Fair, Arsht Center Fall for the Arts, and the Miami Music Festival.

PALO! has performed for packed houses at New York’s legendary SOB’s, Ryles Jazz Club and Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston, and the Chicago Folk and Roots Festival. The band often appears at venues throughout South Florida.

Outside of little bits of information picked from the internet, not much is known about Twisted Insane other than the fact that he has one of the hardest, fastest flows in the history of hip-hop. Twisted Insane started out his career homeless selling cd’s just to get money for food and a room. Eventually, Twisted Insane’s buzz grew into something out of control. Twisted Insane’s flow and rhymes are so brutal and high-speed in addition to often being one of the fans two most common choices for fastest rapper on the planet, that Tech N9ne (the other common choice among fans for the title of ‘the fastest’), the #1 independent artist in the world recently tapped Twisted Insane for an appearance on Tech N9ne’s latest album, the #4 Billboard charting “All 6’s And 7’s” on the the song “Worldwide Choppers”. Renowned jazz pianist Bill Mays will perform for the Gold Coast Jazz Society’s 21st Anniversary Jazz Concert Series.  “Mays at the Movies” features the Bill Mays Trio performing jazz arrangements of popular movie soundtracks.

This concert is based on Mays’s recent CD, Mays at the Movies and includes musical selections from some of American’s most popular movies including The Shadow of Your Smile, The Summer Knows, Charade and others.  Drummer Marty Morell and bassist Richard Drexler will fill out the trio for this concert.
 
A jazz pianist, composer and arranger, Mays has played with the best of the jazz world including stints as accompanist for Sara Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Woody Herman and Gerry Mulligan. His bio includes an extensive list of television and movie scores on which he has played or contributed music. "Gospel music was the first music I heard,” says Bill. “Dad played the trombone, guitar and harmonica (at the same time!), piano and organ, and I have vivid memories of him playing the accordion while my mom sang.   Earl “Fatha” Hines provided Bill’s first exposure to jazz when "a friend took me to a jazz brunch and Fatha was playing solo piano,” recalls Bill. “That was the beginning of a love affair with jazz that continues to this day.”
 
Mays’s jazz career began with the Bill Green Trio in San Diego.  He moved on to Los Angeles where he worked jazz gigs with LA’s best players.   Soon he became a fixture in the Hollywood recording studios as LA’s  first-call pianist for singers where he worked with stars including Dionne Warwick, Anita O’Day, Al Jarreau and Frank Sinatra.
 
Mays moved to New York and began a fruitful affiliation with Palmetto Records in 1999. "That was a major move for me artistically,” says Mays.  “I found a connection with my trio of drummer Matt Wilson and bassist Martin Wind that was truly special.”  Recordings under the Palmetto label include Summer Sketches and Going Home.   In 2009 he assumed the piano chair in the Phil Woods Quartet while continuing to tour with his own trio.  That year he also produced his CD Mays at the Movies with Peter Washington on bass and Billy Drummond on drums on the SteepleChase label.
 
Mays is well-known for his compositional and arranging talents. He has contributed music to the libraries of a wide array of artists including Aureole chamber ensemble, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Percy Faith Orchestra, Woody Herman Orchestra, Morgana King, Shelly Manne, Mark Murphy, Bud Shank, Marvin Stamm, Lew Tabackin, Turtle Creek Chorale and Phil Woods.
 
Currently, Mays tours and records in many varied configurations including a duo with trumpeter Marvin Stamm, the Inventions Trio, The Bill May Trio (featuring Matt Wilson & Martin Wind), duo with Bud Shank, a sextet and as a solo pianist.

Anthony Mordechai Tzvi Russell, the “new voice of Yiddish music,” will perform in concert on Sunday, June 9th, at 4:00 p.m. The event, the first solo concert ever presented by the nationally-renowned Winter Jewish Music Concert, will be at Temple Israel of Greater Miami.
Russell, an African-American who is a Jew-by-choice, is a classically-trained bass who over the last ten years has sung with opera companies in San Francisco and New York. After his years in the world of classical music, Russell was drawn to Yiddish music by its emotional power.
Russell has now focused on Yiddish music, and has performed concerts of Yiddish music in New York, Toronto, and Boston, as well as Northern California, where he resides with his partner, Rabbi Michael Rothbaum.
Mr. Russell will be accompanied by Alan Mason, the Music Director of the Winter Jewish Music Concert.

Creating jamming blues rock music that is ancient and modern and truly original, David is the son of a Jazz singer/actress, Martha Stewart, and grandson of Buddy De Sylva, songwriter of “Birth of the Blues”, “Sunny Boy” and the “Best things in Life are free”.
David began his career as a Blues artist in 1990 after touring the world as a guitarist with show business icon, Cher. David has shared the stage with Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes’ band Gov’t Mule, Allman Brothers alumnus Dan Toler, blues artists like Anson Funderburg, Billy Branch, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Tommy Castro, Larry McCray and many more.
Writing and creating his own brand of blues, David uses world rhythms, traditional blues instrumentation and soulful vocals as a vehicle for his songs. His songs call to mind the struggles and joys of real life.
Charles Gasper – Bass

Receiving an electric guitar on his 10th birthday allowed Charles to refine his “ear” and help his musical passion to blossom.

“If there was a song to learn, I learned it note for note, even if it took me all day”.

Albuquerque alternative rock quartet Alien Lovestock provided a platform for his definitive sound and style and allowed for even more exposure after the band relocated to San Francisco. There, Alien Lovestock collaborated and performed with George Clinton, Storm Large, and other luminaries on the band’s sophomore album “Planet of the Fish”. Charles also continued to work with Alien Lovestock alumni Eric McFadden (EMT, Stockholm Syndrome) and Paulo Baldi (Cake, Les Claypool) and later joined up with longtime Bay Area Latin rockers Orixa whose crossover sound of rock/reggae/funk/ska had helped to garner accolades and to establish the band as the premier rock en espanol group in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2010 Charles relocated to South Florida to join up with long time friend “David Shelley” and his Florida based band “Bluestone”.

Randy Ridenour – a/k/a RED- Drums
Florida born, Randy Ridenour’s style of drumming and personality shine with Bluestone. Randy started playing drums at the young age of 7, influenced by Don Brewer, Buddy Rich, Thomas Lang and Dave weckl to name a few.

David Russell certainly needs no introduction. The legendary, internationally acclaimed GRAMMY award-winning guitarist has had a phenomenal performing and recording career and is reaching for new heights with his recent Baroque album. No matter the genre, David’s interpretations serve as references for all who wish to be more complete guitarists, as he occupies a unique position of universal respect and admiration among amateurs and professionals alike. Concert-goers and musical critics alike are amazed by his musical genius and captivating stage presence. His seemingly effortless performances are highlighted by great attention to detail and provocative lyrical phrasing, suggesting an innate understanding of what each individual composer was working to achieve and bringing to each piece an unparalleled sense of adventure. Local experimental musician Teepee will celebrate the beginning of a three week national tour with his full band at Bardot on Thursday, March 28, 2013. Supporting DJs include Mikey Ramirez from Radio-Active Records, and Mr. Jolt, host and owner of local internet radio station Jolt Radio.

Teepee pairs experimental dissonance with confessional, melodic beauty to create uncompromising, lush noise pop. The group’s latest effort Distant Love or: Time Never Meant Anything, And Never Will is their most ambitious album to date, drawing heavily from sonic innovators My Bloody Valentine, Joe Meek, and Death in June. The three piece live band consists of Erix S. Laurent, Andrew McLees, and Dion Keith Kerr IV.

The upcoming tour will support the release of Teepee’s latest album, and continues throughout April with an appearance at Graveface Records in Savannah, GA for Record Store Day on April 20th. Along the way, Teepee will perform with The People’s Temple (HoZac Records), Levek (Lefse Records), Dead Confederate (Old Flame Records), and Purling Hiss (Fan Death, Drag City Records), among others. La Voz Kids, a Spanish version of the hit tv show The Voice, will be filming in Miami, and free audience tickets are available for anyone over the age of 16. The announced judges so far are, Paulina Rubio and Prince Royce. Fans can request tickets as indicated on the flyer. Featuring The Amernet Quartet performs Beethoven’s Op. 18, a brand new quartet by Jeff Briggs, and two (new) standards by William Bolcom and Chinary Ug, with a guest appearance by songstress Nicole Henry performing arrangements from the Great American Songbook.

(Composer) Chinary Ung’s music is noted for combining traditional Cambodian musical elements with western instrumentation; his series of pieces titled Spiral has received considerable acclaim. Ung teaches at the University of California, San Diego.

(Composer) William Elden Bolcom has received the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal of Arts, two Grammy Awards, and was named 2007 Composer of the Year by Musical America. Bolcom’s other works include “Recuerdos” for Two Pianos, commissioned by Miami’s own Dranoff International Two Piano Foundation.

(Composer/Arranger) Jeff Briggs’ concert music has been performed widely in traditional venues, and he has also reached millions of multi-media aficionados, on computer screens through his varied career as a computer games composer, designer, producer, and software entrepreneur.

Amernet String Quartet – Lauded for their “intelligence” and “immensely satisfying” playing by the New York Times, the Amernet in residence at FIU, has garnered recognition as one of today’s exceptional string quartets.

Gold Dust Lounge is a collaborative musical project led by guitarist/songwriter, Russell Mofsky. Mofsky is a native of South Florida who came up through the DIY punk scene of the late 1980s. He was a member of the critically-acclaimed band Quit who were regulars in independent music circles and shared the stage with bands such as Social Distortion, Green Day, Fugazi, Marilyn Manson, Butthole Surfers, 7-Seconds, Samiam, and ALL. Subsequently studying jazz guitar at the New England Conservatory of Music, Mofsky started Gold Dust Lounge as a way to explore and integrate a broad range of musical influences.
